Tim's parents didn't intend to have another child. One was plenty. And then an one drunken night resulted in Janet getting pregnant. It's a bit of a predicament, seeing as neither of them want another child (who will need to be fed and raised and stuff) but are also both generally against abortion. So, she rides out the pregnancy, limiting public appearances so it remains secret. She doesn't want to deal with the publicity her being pregnant would get her. It's too much drama. So she keeps it secret from everyone but her husband, and gives birth in a private hospital.

She refuses to sign the birth certificate. She doesn't want this baby tied to her. She doesn't even bother thinking of a name. She gives him away as soon as he's out. A yet-to-be-named newborn Danny is handed off to an orphanage as soon as he can be. The Drake parents go through medical procedures to ensure another pregnancy won't happen.

He stays there for a only a few weeks before an over-eager, excitable couple comes by with their young daughter, in search of a son to teach all their ghostly hunting ways to because for all Jazz, even so young, is smart, she has no interest in their research. Also, Maddie doesn't want to go through another pregnancy since her first one wasn't very enjoyable (she was in a lot of pain for most of those 9 months, basically unable to work on her research).

They see Danny and are quick to adopt him (well, as quick as you can be, but, with it being a Gotham orphanage, it's a lot quicker than it should be). Jack claims he can see the ghost hunter potential in him and Maddie thinks he's adorable. She's excited to have a little baby again to take care of and hold. She'd always wanted a big family, and while 2 children isn't really a lot, it's enough for someone as busy as her. Jazz is excited to have a little brother, and takes to reading books about babies and parenting to better take care of him. She loves holding him, and brags to all her friends about her baby brother, who's undeniably the cutest baby ever.

Danny grows up with the Fentons, not knowing he's adopted. Everything happens as it does in the show. And then, when Danny is 15, his parents take him to Gotham for a ghost hunter convention, Jazz busy with university hunting. Going to Gotham should've been a nice vacation for him. No ghost attacks for a good two weeks. Just Danny in Gotham - with free reign of the most crime ridden city in the world. Yeah this wasn't gonna' go well.

Gotham is dark. The air smells like sewage, death and bitter hope. The people feel like candles flickering in a storm, stubbornly refusing to go out. Danny decides he likes it. The hotel his parents choose is fancy (paid for by Vlad at the insistence that Maddie couldn't stay in some random, run down place after catching wind of their trip). Danny thought it suspicious but figured he'd deal with it when he needed to.

Anyway, Danny has his own room right across the hall from his parents. It's got a queen sized bed, full sized bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub, a walk-in closet, a tv and a balcony. It's very nice. Danny sets his bags down and collapses onto his bed with a huff. He lays there for a minute, and then reaches for his phone to text Jazz, Sam and Tucker that he made it to the hotel safe (something they insisted on).

And then he stews.

Mum and Dad, for all their brilliance, can be forgetful when it comes to their children. Danny basically has free reign to do whatever for most of the 2 weeks they'll be in Gotham (which is his whole winter break and a little of the first week back).

Vlad's invited the Fentons to a few galas he's attending, insisting they'll be able to show off their inventions to a bunch of people. Danny knows its an excuse for Vlad to spend time with Maddie, make digs at Jack, and show him off as if he was his son. He's not looking forward to it, but the offer came with free, great hotel rooms so it could be worse.

(Plus, with Vlad paying he can spurge on room services and bleed him dry.)

Besides, Danny could do whatever he wanted the rest of the time. He could go to the planetarium and stuff. All he had to do was not out himself as a meta-adjacent person in a meta-hating city. Easy peasy.

All in all, what better time for all this to happen than on Christmas?

Honestly, even with the galas, the garish Christmas decorations all over the place, the music, and Vlad, this is seeming like a better Christmas than usual.

Euphorbia myrsinites (donkey tail, myrtle spurge, blue spurge)

Handle with Care

I've always called this plant a donkey tail but it's probably better known as myrtle spurge. Euphorbia is a big genus with over 2000 species but I'm afraid that donkey tail is 'the bad boy of the family'. It's native to Italy, the Balkans and Turkey but it's considered a noxious weed in Utah, Oregon and Colorado. According to the Salt Lake County Weed Control Program, "Small infestations can be controlled through multiple years of digging up at least 4" of the root. Myrtle spurge is best controlled in the spring when the soil is moist and prior to seed production. Make sure to dispose of all the plant parts in the garbage instead of composting." Goggles and rubber gloves are strongly advised.

Why all this heavy security? All Euphorbias produce a poisonous sap which burns the skin and can cause blindness if it gets in your eyes. If you eat the leaves, you get vomiting and severe diarrhea. This milky sap is a very good defense against any type of herbivore. Donkey tail in particular is extremely toxic to: humans, cattle, sheep, pets etc. etc. Rabbits and deer won't go near it. It has no known North American insect pests. Not surprisingly, it should never be planted next to a playground.

On the other hand, donkey tail is a common ornamental plant and widely available in local plant shops. Euphorbia myrsinites has also been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's, Award of Garden Merit. It has attractive blue foliage, a very long blooming period and thrives in poor soil. But pleased be advised: Handle with Care.

21 June 2024 - Friday Field Notes

Baby Pronghorn! I was wondering why the adults were hanging out around the parking lot so much late in the day when I spotted this lil dude. Mama Pronghorns will leave their young unattended while they go forage and the babies will hide in the grass until they come back.

Not the most successful Crayfish catching expedition. We only caught two lol. It was pretty early in the day and I don't think they'd had their coffee yet either.

Lots of bugs this week. Some sort of beetle grub (not sure the species) and another Bold Jumping Spider! (I think)

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) has these beautiful orange flowers. A type of Milkweed which is also a host to Monarch Butterflies.

Soapweed Yucca (Yucca glauca) are members of the Asparagaceae family (yes, asparagus) and have a symbiotic relationship with Yucca Moths (Tegeticula sp. and Parategeticula sp.). These plants are only pollinated by these species of moths. Yucca Moths will lay their eggs in the flowers of the Yucca plants and when the larvae hatch they'll eat the Yucca seeds. However, these moths know not to overburden the plants and leave pheromone cues for other female moths indicating that eggs have already been laid on a particular flower. Yucca Moths also intentionally pollinate the flowers, unlike bees which pollinate accidentally, and distribute pollen between flowers as they're laying eggs. Soapweed refers to the saponins that are found in this plant, which is a chemical compound that, well, can be used as soap. There are a lot of traditional Indigenous uses for this plant beyond soap, certain parts of the plant are edible and the leaves are fibrous and can be used in cordage for all sorts of things.

Leafy Spurge Hawkmoth Caterpillar on some Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia virgata) both of these species are introduced to N. America. Leafy Spurge is considered a noxious weed in many states. The Hawkmoth though was introduced as a biocontrol for the plant though, since these caterpillars eat Leafy Spurge. Unfortunately, the introduction of the moth hasn't fully mitigated the effects of the introduced weed, so other weed management strategies still have to be employed.

so spurge finding out he’s pregnant again at the start of 2020 and having to eventually miss the rest of the season but. we know what happens there with the rest of the season. but then spurge finally has a pregnancy where he’s not worrying about missing hockey and just gets to enjoy it the whole time. yes he has to miss bubble playoffs but also. come on. and theeeeeeen he has months to get ready for the start of a new season while getting to enjoy time with his family. and come start of the season he gets the c 🥰 only omega captain in the league 🥰 and parise and suter are pissed about it the end <3

Domestic Aaron Hotchner has my heart 🥰❤️

I have some hc:

-He loves his farmer's markets. Sunday mornings, you'll walk hand-in-hand with coffee/tea, a morning stroll, looking at all the fresh produce and goods.

-He loves to cook for you. If you have a favorite dish, he will absolutely learn to make it for you.

-loves reading and one of his favorite ways to spend time together is reading, with you or Jack or just the there of you (you love reading to your Hotchner boys, all snuggled with u)

-He LOVES having a hyperactive family. He loves nothing more than to enter the comfort of his home and hear the delighted squeals of his kids as they spring into his embrace.

-Drinks his coffee black, but will occasionally spurge on a seasonal drink. He prefers local cafes.

-loves pet names, he melts every time.

so if he wasn't in a good mood prior, those emotions are long gone now 😭 serial killers and work are the farthest thing from his mind. now he's so so smiley and excitedly greeting his babies back as he scoops everyone into his arms <333 he'll ask them how their day was, what they did at school, and everyone immediately starts talking over each other trying to share- which makes some of the littles very frustrated >:( because they can't tell their daddy about their day without being interrupted :(((((

hehe so he'll shush their loud little voices gently, reminds them to use their inside voices and take turns as they talk 🥺 so then everyone calms down a bit and smiles reappear as they tell him all about the day's activities 🥺 jack, being the best big brother, always helps calm them down too <3 and finally you come over to greet him as well <333 his face just brightens up even more at the sight of you and while everyone is still in his embrace, he gives you a kiss hello 🥰 which prompts a bunch of small ew's! but it's quickly accompanied by more laughter and your little bugs look at you with such excitement in their eyes as they tell you, again, that daddy's finally home from work <33333

and aaron's used to the hustle and bustle at work, but it's nothing compares to how it is at home, but in the best way possible !!!! hehe he loves seeing his babies so lively and chaotic (as long as everyone's being safe) and how it fills the entire home 🥹 sure it gets loud at times, but he wouldn't prefer it any other way. he can't picture life being any different 🥹 it just fills a piece in his heart he didn't even know existed until they were all born

and family cuddles!!!!!!!! after dinner, once every toy is picked up and all the dinner dishes are tucked away in the dishwasher, everyone compiles in either the big bed™ , as the littles call it, or on the couch, either reading together or watching a movie. the littles always fall asleep fairly quickly, because being a kid is hard work >:(, and ugh the sight always warms aaron's heart <3 they're either smushed onto aaron or you, deep in dreamland and the greatest sense of peace floods over him. aaron loves them, he loves knowing they're safe and protected with the two of you, and he loves you hehe <3 endlessly

YN sat down in the small lounge area as she waited for her brother to be finished with his business. Beomgyu sat across from her, playing a game on his phone with his earbuds in. YN decided she would come to the company to take Taehyung out for lunch, Beomgyu just followed for food-or he likes to claim. Deep down YN knows Beomgyu will do anything to be in his eldest brother's presence, the twins adore him. Just as she was about to turn her page in the magazine she was looking at, the door to the office opened and out walked Jay and Jake. The two of them made eye contact with YN and she smiled at them, standing on her feet to greet them.

“Hi, guys!” She waved.

“YN? What are you doing here?” Jay asked.

“I am having lunch with my brother,” YN said. “Jay? You come to the meetings?”

“More for moral support,” Jay said, explaining and giving Jake a look. 

“You’re a good friend, Jay,” YN said. 

“I try to be,” Jay said, wrapping his arm around Jake's shoulder just as Jake rolled his eyes.

“He is, he doesn’t have to be here and can be back in Australia doing his music but instead he’s in this Hell with me, willingly,” Jake said.

“Music? You do music?” YN asked.

“Yeah, I write and play the guitar,” Jay explained. “I’ll have to show you some stuff sometime.”

“Oh, please do. That’s awesome!” YN said. 

“Of course,” Jay said. “I’ll see you in the car.”

Jake nodded just as Jay said his goodbyes and walked off.

“That bad today?” YN asked.

“This is like…a whole other level of stress,” Jake said, rubbing his face. “I feel like I’m going to fail.”

“Don’t say that, I’m sure you will learn fast. It’s a hard adjustment but I know you have a business mindset too, you’ll get the hang of things within time. Don’t be too hard on yourself,” YN said.

“Thanks, YN. Your support makes me feel 100 times better, always,” Jake said.

“Of course. Plus, you have my brother. Taehyung is really smart and helpful, just follow his lead and take advantage of his mentorship while you have it,” YN said and Jake nodded.

“Oh, I’m so grateful for him. He’s been amazing and so patient,” Jake said. “Your whole family has.”

YN smiled at him and nodded just as Jake was about to start walking off. He said his goodbyes quickly, passing her and getting a full sense of her perfume. He stopped in his tracks then and just as YN was about to walk away he quickly reached out and grabbed her wrist gently pulling her back to face him.

“Oh, sorry,” He said, letting go of her wrist.

“Do you need something?” She asked.

“Would you like to go out with me sometime? Sometimes soon? I’d love to take you out,” Jake said, feeling the spurge of confidence overcome his every being. She gave him the most sincere and gentlest smile and nodded.

“I would love that.”When Jake made it back to the elevator, his heart was hammering in his chest waiting to burst. His cheeks were flushed and his mind was numb. He still couldn’t believe what he had just done. What type of confidence just overcame him and made him act so impulsively? What was even crazier to him, it worked. She said yes and before he left her he said he would text her the details and went on their respective ways. Now, he was going to go on a date with her and he had no idea just what to plan. What do you plan for someone like her? Where do you go?

*Mandatory reminder that I’m no flower specialist, which means these are all very subjective opinions. Take everything with a grain of salt!

Lilia has spider chrysanthemums. They’re popular wedding flowers since they represent liveliness (in white also truth and purity.) However, chrysanthemums in all variations are funeral flowers and symbolize peace and death and are used to express sympathy. In China however they can stand for peace, health, and old age. Since their other name is ‘spider mom’ they’re also a symbol of a long and happy life! In Greek mythology they’re protectors against evil spirits (and thus once again flowers commonly found at graveyards) which bring bad luck and nightmares to those who pluck them. (I know some ppl wanted it to be the spider lily or as it is sometimes called ‘japanese death flower’ since it’s often depicted in anime but if you google spider lily I feel like it doesn’t quite look right for what Lilia has in his bouquet. Spider chrysanthemums, at least in my opinion, are a better match.)

One of the pink type of flowers in his bouquet are begonias. They’re a universal symbol of love, affection, desire, gladness, and pleasure, as well as gratitude, peace and harmony. They can also represent misfortune or impending bad luck. Since they’re regarded as one of the most beautiful flowers they usually carry positive meanings though and are commonly gifted on birthdays, for Mother’s Day, or as a thank you.

The other pink flowers are peonies, which symbolize prosperity, good fortune, happiness, honor, and compassion. In China they’re regarded as the ‘king of the flowers’, being a symbol of friendship and beauty. In Japan they’re associated with honor, masculinity, and wealth.

The white ones look like baby’s breath, which represent love, appreciation, and admiration, as well as innocence, purity, and everlasting love. It’s a popular flower for wedding bouquets, but also as a gift for baby showers and generally a flower you’d give to new parents. On the other hand, they could be yarrows, which are a symbol of braveness, courageousness, and steadfastness of love. It's also known as ‘soldier’s wound wart’ and ‘knight’s milfoil’ since wearing the blossoms supposedly brings safety and bravery.

One of the green flowers (the slightly paler, long stretched one) is a gladiolus. Gladioli represent strength of character, faithfulness, moral integrity and remembrance, as well as a spirit that doesn’t give up.

The other green flower are hellebore. They symbolize peace, serenity and tranquility, as well as anxiety, stress and scandal. Green hellebore, more specifically, stand for youthfulness, rebirth, renewal, heath, prosperity, good fortune, and wealth. If you encounter a hellebore in your dreams, they’re a symbol of danger. Or they’re euphorbia (Albanian spurge) which represent purity, protection, and wisdom, and generally are a symbol of cheerfulness, family reunion, happiness and good luck, which is why they’re popular during Christmas time.

Naturally, these are only my un-educated guesses, but feel free to let me know if I got anything wrong/what flowers I might’ve missed.

Still life from an apocalypse

Though the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous devastated plants as it did animals, the flora that eventually covered South America afterward resemble the species we have today.

One site in Bogotá, Colombia, preserved leaves from familiar plant families like moonseeds, legumes, palms, spurges, and many others.

Though the fossil insects of South America are less well-known, leaf beetles and various true bugs like stink bugs and cicadas already coexisted and interacted with the plants back then.

Poinsettia

This colourful plant was found near the present day city of Taxco, Mexico and the valleys surrounding Cuernavaca ( in southern Mexico ).

Poinsettia is an indoor plant apart of the Euphorbiaceae family commonly called the spurge family.

Poinsettia represents the christmas season, joy, cheer, and success.
