Never enough hats. After a packed (and not done yet) week of millinery kneezups, The Millinery Association of Australia's annual show and inaugural design competition pinged them all for thrills and sheer numbers of hats. While the Aus Ballet flit through Sleeping Beauty downstairs in the Arts Centre, 29 milliners showed off a mind bogglingly disparate array of spring hat designs upstairs. Judges were The Eternal Headonist's Annabel Allen, the MAA's dapper president and Mililiner Extraordinaire Phillip Rhodes, and Moi, Head Voxfrocker, grateful for the opp to pop on my fave 2014 Rhodes hat (pictured at the tail of this flip) one more time before my 2015 spring millinery wardrobe is mustered. Together we picked a chic, exquisitely crafted red and white tipped saucer with jutting shard details to win the remarkable prize cache including an intensive millinery workshop in Toulouse and dosh for a flight to Paris. More bubbles, another can-ape or six, chatettes with a dozenodd milliners and I'm done. Her core stars are familiar (Natalie Bikicki, Angela Menz, Lisa Tan, Rebecca Share, Studio Aniss, Serena Lindeman, Richard Nylon, Love Lotus and Kim Wiebenga among many lovely others. Bliss, in Millineryland, is a room full of impeccably groomed women in the market for a new hat. Or six. Melbourne Racing Club's annual members' millinery night is just that, a noisy joyful bubble'n'can-ape buffet of millinery by some of the city's most gifted: Phillip Rhodes, Peter Jago, Louise McDonald, Jill Humphries, Felicity Northeast, Aniseh Fakhri among them, as well as a pretty trio of Alannah Hill-ettes spruiking the season's must-have decorated bands for prim young gels. As reported, spring's key set of trendswithlegs includes crown-likes and winged things best set back on lush young locks. For the millinery connoisseurs, freshened versions of the cocktail saucer, lozenge and aerodynamic sculpture, with the odd turban twist, were rendered a hundred elegant ways with fastidious craftsmanship and chic results.
