On this date in 1908, The Springfield race riot began when two black men were arrested for allegedly assaulting a white man. A lynch mob seeking to take the men and murder them, were upset that the sheriff had transferred them out of the city. The mob went on a murderous spree against the black citizens and destroyed black homes and businesses. #springfieldraceriot #domesticterrorism #hiddenhistory #blackhidstory #thingstheydontteachyou #makebeingblackinamericalegal #blackhistoryeveryday #maga https://www.instagram.com/p/CD3o1qnJjIw/?igshid=nhdf6qb0itae

Racial violence exploded in Abraham Lincoln's hometown #OnThisDay in 1908. White mobs attacked the city's African-American residents, burning homes and businesses and lynching at least two people. It took the National Guard to restore order. The outrage helped lead to creation of the NAACP. Today, a memorial to the riot stands on the campus of the Lincoln Presidential Library in downtown Springfield. The memorial, designed by Preston Jackson, was inspired by the chimneys left standing after the destruction of homes owned by African-Americans. #AbrahamLincoln #SpringfieldRaceRiot #NAACP #CivilRights #Springfield #ILhistory #IL200 https://ift.tt/2B7neQy
