Very specific request for recommendations:

One of the things I do with my students is owl pellet dissection to identify the small rodents and occasional birds contained within. I have two big sacks of the things, from two different sites. As one of their assessments, they analyse a set number of pellets each, then share their data to get a bigger dataset, then discuss the biodiversity difference between the two sites. All good and fun. One of them once took home a bird skull and made it into a necklace.

Here is the sticky part: the database where they share their data.

Now, I am currently using an Excel spreadsheet that I host on my work OneDrive, which I share to Moodle and allow editing access. This means I format the spreadsheet, then they can access and add their data. Central place, they can easily copy and paste the data into their own Excel file to manipulate as they want, and I can see who has uploaded and who hasn't; for each pellet, one column asks for their name, and then the others list the potential organisms and they simply number how many of each they found. Boom. Easy.

BUT, it carries the inherent risk of one of my intelligent, capable and highly skilled students accidentally deleting/overwriting other people's entries in a moment of digital clumsiness and stupidity. This year, one of them forgot it was the shared document, and so did all the data analysis in it where everyone could see/plagiarise. This is Not Ideal.

So, I'm looking for some sort of digital tool that I can use, very preferably link to Moodle for easy access, will allow the students to download the whole collaborated dataset, and won't let them delete anyone else's entries. It also needs to be free. It doesn't need to do anything fancy - they can download into Excel if they want to manipulate it. I just want an easy central repository for this data.

Let me tell you a story about what was my writing journey post 2020 for me.

As some of you might know, I finished a book at the very end of 2020, by the title of Charlatans. It's an adult novel about three voodoo-touched adult siblings who make Faustian bargains to find their long-missing father in exchange for their hearts' deepest desires.

I was super proud of it. My first full-fledged novel, something I had always known I was capable of doing. The hard part was over.

Or so I thought.

See, to be a GOOD novelist, you have to let your work marinate. So that's what I did: I sat on it for a few months, not touching it at all, not even remembering that it existed. After those few months, I set to the hard work of editing.

When I tell you it is SO hard to edit a book you know is missing SOMETHING, but you have no idea what...ugh. And asking for beta readers was tasking, 'cause the thing was over 90K words. I did still ask, of course, but didn't really manage to get a lot of feedback at that time of editing.

Nevertheless! I pressed on. Started researching literary agents, fully aware that with a single project, you only get ONE shot with each agent.

I had a spreadsheet. I had my query letter. I had detailed notes on who to ask for and why. I was ready.

And so I started querying.

...The agents that didn't straight up ignore me gave me automated rejections. The agents that didn't do that gave me personal rejections.

And the one or two agents that actually bothered to ask AND read the whole manuscript?

They loved it!

Just...not enough to publish it.

So. Here I am, with a fully finished manuscript and no one looking to publish it. What do I do?

I put it away and go back to the drawing board, because clearly, I'm missing something. But since no rejection is personalized enough, I don't know WHAT.

Frustration makes me put it down, and I let it sit for a few more months.

Until #DVPIT.

For the uninitiated, #DVPIT is a literary event in which diverse prospective writers and established agents come together to discover new working relationships. The diverse writer has three chances to pitch their project throughout the day to agents, and if agents like your pitch, you may send them your query package. Cool, right?

I take the day off work. I have my pitches queued on my phone, ready to go. Throughout the day, I strategically post them at peak hours, keeping my fingers crossed for even one single agent's attention.

The event runs for an extra week to give agents a chance to read the thousands of pitches flooding the Discord channel. I wait.

No likes. Not a single one.

Now, this part I'm less bitter about, because 150 characters to describe my book? That's just ridiculous. And the comp titles to prove that people would like it? Ugggggh. Not an opportunity to really sell Charlatans.

But this means that, still, my first novel is without an agent. No agent, no publication.

So I put it away again and decide to move on.

And before you ask, yes, I did look into self-publishing. Still lowkey looking, but it's tough, since everything seems like a scam nowadays. And don't even get me started on the AI books being published.

I know you didn't ask for this rant, @hydrogen-ann and for that, I apologize. But TL;DR: a published book is currently a pipe dream for me, though not for lack of trying.

Bitterness aside, thank you so, so much. I'm so happy you'd be interested in something original of mine. If I ever push Charlatans out the door/find the time to write an entirely NEW novel, I'll be sure to let you know 💜

hello! I appreciate the suggestion, but for multiple reasons I’m going to stick with the format as it is.

first, as I discussed on the fantasy poll blog, including blurbs feels like doing promotion for books (even more so than the polls already are to some extent doing), rather than simply asking a factual question about them, and there are certain books and/or authors I categorically do not want to do that for, like Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow are both currently queued) and other tithing Mormons.

it also becomes complicated when dealing with non-English books, which are often more difficult to find reliable information — like blurbs — for. I’m thinking for example about older books and books in smaller languages, like Augo Lynge’s Ukiut 300-nngornerat, for which I can’t even find a Danish blurb at the moment, let alone a Greenlandic one, just French and English (ironically, given there’s no English translation). meanwhile some submitted books (like Dave Duggan’s Makaronik, which I just queued this morning) aren’t available in English; would I give just the Irish blurb for it? it creates logistical complications I don’t want to deal with, since queuing things is already a somewhat time-intensive process. (it would be a bit easier if I weren’t committed to my spreadsheets, lol, but still not fast.)

What now?

Well, I'm in the middle of editing a project that needs to be edited before the end of the week.

After that: A secret santa gift exchange and a fantasy trilogy need to outlined for Nanowrimo, and then Nanowrimo happens, and after that I need to edit my long Sterek fanfic, but I don't think I will be done with that before new years. However, I think I'll add another 75K words to this, so maybe next year I will challenge myself to write 300K words in a year.

Or something like that. We'll see. As you can see from the stats, I am perfectly capable of getting a lot of words done in one month, but not consistently so.

Why set a goal like this?

To make me write every day. Turns out, that's practically impossible, but if I try to write every day, I will fail some days, but succeed most days. Evidently. 200 000 words is about three novels worth of words.

Inezra: Gaming Edition

Inezra, unsurprisingly, is not a huge fan of multiplayer games. Her teammates suck. They don't know how to play the game. She's also the type to make her team ragequit because she has the trash talk ability of an early 00s COD player. None of these things lend itself to a great online gaming experience. That said, singleplayer games are fine but can become boring quickly.

Minecraft

Inezra absolutely griefs. If you make something even remotely nice and you annoy her or she's bored you're either going to wake up to it burnt down or she'll spawn camp you while destroying it.

Beats the ender dragon within the first hour of a server being open and doesn't say anything in chat. She will murder you after speedrunning the endgame to get good gear.

She can make nice megastructures or display actual creativity when motivated, but living in a hole in the ground or the side of a mountain is way easier than playing the game.

Lock your chests or she will steal from you.

The type of person to pay for an unban on a P2W server because she has caegars to burn and wrigglers to make cry.

RimWorld

Inezra would create some type of raider colony and focus on either drugs or organ harvesting.

The slave trade is too micromanagey for her to bother because you have to take care the pawns long enough to sell them. Why are you looking at her like that?

Will engage in cold wars with the factions that piss her off the most and send her vat grown super soldiers to die by the dozens.

Not terribly attached to any particular pawn. She will name them after people she doesn't like and send them to die, or sacrifice them in the winter when all her pawns are starving to death because the super soldiers are eating them out of house and home.

Stellaris

Inezra strikes a balance between overblown military budget and spending and investing in civil infrastructure.

She's more than capable of playing for hours at a time but never feels like making it to the endgame. Coming up with her own win conditions is more entertaining, especially if it involves subjugating the entire galaxy.

Self-sabotage tendencies are more evident when she's playing games like this. She'll play the spreadsheet simulator perfectly until she decides she's done playing and set off a series of explosions that end the game.

Stardew Valley

She doesn't know why she bothers playing this one. It's boring, she hates talking to the townspeople, and the early game is a slog.

This is something she'd play to turn her brain off for a couple of hours.

Loves bombing the shit out of everything.

Generic FPS

Gets banned for being toxic.

Straddles the thin line between untranslatable slurs and creative insults.

Will teamkill you if you're in the way and not be the least bit remorseful about it.

Wants wrigglers off her team immediately. How did you scrape up the 60 caegars to buy this game? Get off the mic.

100% a sweat but only because she's been playing the game since before you were hatched. It's not her fault she's better than you. Go cry about.

Puzzle Games / Hidden Object

Absolutely eats these up. She's the person buying those fucking jewel case games at the local store.

Do not interrupt her when she's playing puzzle games on her palmhusk while on break. Chances are you won't turn up for work tomorrow.

Miscellaneous

Why are game developers peddling their on rail cinematic experiences as games? Fuck off with your 15 minute cutscenes. Why are we button mashing?

Does not like most fighting games. If she wanted a fight she could go outside and get it. Mortal Kombat is the exception because of the fatalities.

If she's playing an RPG she's taking the most utilitarian or evil options. She doesn't care about hurting some virtual character's feelings, she's trying to get shit done. Why yes, she'll take the red ending instead of the blue or green ending.

Me: Okay I think I should draw Round 2 first before I go and reboot the Technician Modes Me, realizing that I was so invested in Round 1, that I draw nearly all of them but 3 (minus the Contact Abilities): Me: ...YOU'RE TELLING ME HAD I DIDN'T STOP I WOULD'VE FINISHED THIS IN ONE ROUND?!

*SIGH* Let's get this over with. Here's Part 1 if you're confused.

Burning - This ability is kinda useless but uh, again, I guess Fire is offense and Burning is speed, so they can co-exist! Had to steal all the icons from Nightmare in Dreamland, Canvas Curse, and 64 just to make this. I hope it's sufficient and it's not just FIRE 2!!!

Ranger - I mean, I certainly didn't expect this ability to appear. But okay, sure! Kirby with a gun supremacy. It looks fun to play in Forgotten Land. I just decided to look at its illustration and have it the icon of the gun shooting a star... I might redo this in the future, it looks... Eh...

Drill - Ah yes, the ability that ruined Technician Uprising's canon standing. Before this ability was revealed, I deadset that Kirby's Technician ability would be Pure, which means he has capabilities unique to him only, in this case copying (and of course Robobot Armor shares that too with him due to partnership clause). Sure, the drill itself (which IS his weapon) was already in 64 but as a power combo which, as you may know, I made that state in 64 as a puberty state, which means that's not legit! So hell yeah, Kirby gets to use a drill. Bring on the Gurren Lagann references, people, he can thrive in it. BUT THEN FORGOTTEN LAND CAME. THEN THE DRILL ABILITY CAME. And so everything is ruined, the drill symbolism is no longer unique to poor Kirby. Thanks, HAL! Now I have to grasp at straws! I tried making the best of it though, all bias aside. It gave me a lesson to be more careful with making Technician Modes in the future though, as if the weapon matches the newest ability, I would be effectively screwed. WAHOO! Anyways stealing the ability hat for this one isn't it obvious.

Technician - My beloved. This design has not changed too much, even in its old days. Nothing much to say here.

Hypernova - Okay hear me out it technically has an icon but... The main reason I wanted to change it is because the Miracle Fruit is so mesmerizing. So I decided, screw canon, canon can eat my ass. In fact, I could've made it colorful too, but I restricted myself to three colors because Contact Abilities aren't supposed to exist! So it makes sense for it to break the rules! Yet I still want some boundaries.

Kabuki - Oh god I do not want to remember what the anime did to this ability. I have ranted about this ability before. So now, it's my responsibility to make it real. But the thing is, before I finalized what it would look like, I needed something to represent their magic, and no I do not want it to be Baton 2.0, so uh. Will-o-wisps! The supernatural Japanese thingies! I love will-o-wisps. So uh... yay.

Well, that means everything is settled... though I will have to do some minor edits to the spreadsheet, because GUESS WHAT?!
