What I’m Learning Q1 2022
The following are all the topics I’m studying during Q1 2022 (Jan - March), let me know if anyone else has also studied/experienced this topics as well, since I could use some help on some of these! Most are for my work/career, and the last one is for my graduate degree, which I am so close to finishing!
1) PCSAE XSOAR Certification (goal - end of Feb to take the exam)
2) MITRE SOC Analyst Certification (goal - end of January to complete last exam)
3) BHIS Getting Started with Security and MITRE ATT&CK course (second week of Jan)
4) Splunk eLearning courses (multiple courses, goal to complete 3 courses by end of Jan)
5) INFM 207 Digital Assets Management (course runs Jan - March, letter grade and part of my graduate degree requirements)
These five certifications/classes I am signed up for in Q1 are going to be a lot, BUT I do have a lot of background in them already and I can take time during the day to study for the work related topics (1-4) with my job.
Wishing you the best on your learning adventure! - LB

09012022 - 3 interesting things from this week
For the first week of January 2022, it was pretty calm, and I spent most of my time resting, working, and preparing for a busy January/rest of the year. However, here are some of the interesting things I learned this week:
Recorded Future's Intelligence Playbook: Released in December 2021, this document provides a bunch of different playbooks for enterprises to review and potentially implement. While it is vendor heavy (obvs since it's coming from a vendor), the playbooks are still solid and I think they are well worth it to look at for an individual SOC implementation with the tools you have.
Stress and Hacking: Understanding Cognitive Stress in Tactical Cyber Ops (Black Hat 2018): This video, from the 2018 Black Hat conference, given by Celeste Paul and Josiah Dkystra, is a very interesting talk that is based off of their research at the NSA. I really enjoyed both reading this article and watching the video from the conference.
One of my colleagues this week brought up interesting research by Greek researchers George Karantzas and Constantinos Patsakis, who compared how endpoint protection systems were able to alert on advanced persistent threat activity. The research is interesting, though, as the cyber community has pointed out, there are some flaws in the initial comparison and the researchers reworked several of their initial comparisons after it came out they were using the wrong versions of some of the software. You can read their research paper here, and a good write up of that summarizes it all here
This upcoming week, I am taking some Splunk elearning classes for my job, as well as participating in the BHIS Getting Started in Security with MITRE course, and the spring semester of my graduate school program starts this week as well - so I'm sure next weeks post will be a bit more in depth/technical.
Wishing you the best in your upcoming learning adventures!
