My partner and I have made it through Helene with minimal loss but many in our community were not so lucky. Homes and businesses in western North Carolina have been completely destroyed and there are still people trapped in their neighborhoods with no way out and no electricity, cell service, or running water.

We are fortunate to have power and water, though we are still without internet and we are under a boil water advisory for the foreseeable future. The Red Cross and National Guard are coming in and multiple emergency shelters have opened for evacuees.

This will be a massive undertaking with the cooperation of all the other governments around the world.

And will be a very lucrative endeavor at the end of it all.

This is just an outline to describe the form the future internet should take and can be changed or modified as required; especially for things I cannot see.

The current corporations will be expected to develop a plan of actions in tandem with current regulatory authorities; failure to do so will create a need for an ultimatum, which we all wish to avoid.

We're also going to need to find ways to encourage competition in these sectors so that they can be upgraded and modified as needed by local areas instead of waiting on these companies to bother with it.

Hi, I decided to make a post about Loki that’s much more organized.

Here he is! This is Loki. He is my actual baby. We love each other so much, and have for 10 years.

On June 19th Loki had a seizure. Now vet bills are skyrocketing for his care.

Here’s proof of his initial visit payment being taken from my bank account.

$1,200 for Ocean State Veterinary.

Loki has been having partial seizures for a month now, and here is an updated view of his seizure log.

That’s 14 partial seizures and 1 full seizure in the span of a month.

My little guy is really suffering; and we, his family, are all suffering too because of how much we love him.

He had a consultation for an MRI, which was $451 (making the cost $1,651 in total).

We are going to go through with the MRI to find out the cause of his seizures and to see how else we can help him. That’s a whopping $3,000, making the total we need to pay $4,651.

'Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan has said he "absolutely" will not work on another film until the Hollywood strikes are resolved.

Tens of thousands of Hollywood actors have joined writers in taking industrial action, because they want streaming giants to agree to a fairer split of profits and better working conditions.

The Screen Actors Guild also wants to protect actors from being usurped by digital replicas.

Nolan admitted he was "very fortunate with the timing", as his film's premieres were held just before the strike began, meaning Oppenheimer would not be affected by industry members stopping work.

When asked if he would write another film during the strike, he told BBC Culture editor Katie Razzall: "No, absolutely. It's very important that everybody understands it is a very key moment in the relationship between working people and Hollywood.

"This is not about me, this is not about the stars of my film," the acclaimed director, writer and producer added.

"This is about jobbing actors, this is about staff writers on television programmes trying to raise a family, trying to keep food on the table."

As more production companies use streaming platforms - like Netflix and Amazon Prime - for their shows, it has changed how actors and writers get paid.

Previously every time an episode was re-run on a TV network, it would tend to involve payment, allowing those who worked on projects to get by in between jobs.

The director said the companies involved had not yet "accommodated how they're going to in this new world of streaming, and a world where they're not licensing their products out to other broadcasters - they're keeping them for themselves".

Nolan, who was Oscar-nominated five times for the films Dunkirk, Inception and Memento, added: "They have not yet offered to pay appropriately to the unions' working members, and it's very important that they do so.

"I think you'd never want a strike, you never want industrial action.

"But there are times where it's necessary. This is one of those times."

Speaking ahead of the London premiere, where several of Oppenheimer's stars left the red carpet early to strike, he explained: "It's very important to bear in mind that there are people who have been out of work for months now, as part of the writers strike, and with the actors potentially joining - a lot of people are going to suffer."

Despite the row in California, British-born Nolan has no current plans to work more in the UK, his home country, as he prefers to be "on the real locations" where his films are set.

"The UK has wonderful film studios," he explained. "It's a great place to come to shoot a film if you're going to be on sound stages."

Oppenheimer tells the story of J Robert Oppenheimer, the enigmatic Manhattan Project scientist, who had a leading role in developing the atomic bomb that made him a "destroyer of worlds".

He "gave us the power to destroy ourselves and that had never happened before", Nolan said.

Commissioned by the US Government during World War II, and believing themselves in a nuclear race with the Nazis over who would create the bomb first, in 1945 scientists in Los Alamos, New Mexico detonated a test bomb, codenamed Trinity.

Their invention was then used, controversially, to end the war, dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to devastating effect.

The film is an exploration not just of Oppenheimer's story, but of the "incredible decision" the scientists took on that first occasion.

"There's a possibility that when you push that button, you might destroy the entire world," Nolan told the BBC.

"And yet they went ahead and they pushed it. How could you make that decision? How could you take that on yourself?"

Another existential threat to civilization is AI, which is also part of the Hollywood strike and makes the Oppenheimer movie more timely.

"One of the interesting things about putting this film out is it's coming at a time when there are a lot of new technologies that people start to worry about the unintended consequences," he said.

"When you talk to leaders in the field of AI, as I do from time to time, they see this moment right now as their Oppenheimer moment. They're looking to his story to say, 'what are our responsibilities? How can we deal with the potential unintended consequences?' Sadly, for them, there are no easy answers."

Nolan is one of a rare number of Hollywood directors. His films - Interstellar, the Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception amongst them - are both blockbusters and arthouse fare; critically acclaimed and, Tenet aside, which was released during the pandemic, box office successes.

"I make the films that I really want to go to the cinema and sit down with my popcorn and watch" he says. "I started making films when I was a kid. I made Super 8 films from when I was seven or eight years old and I've never stopped".

He's a champion of the big screen who, famously, left Warner Bros for rival Universal to make Oppenheimer.

Nolan's known for wanting his films to feel authentic rather than computer-generated.

There was even a rumour doing the rounds on the internet that he had set off a real atomic bomb in New Mexico for Oppenheimer.

"We recreated the circumstances of it," he said, "obviously not using an atomic weapon. What we're trying to portray is this moment of absolute beauty and absolute terror.

"This is the moment that really changed the world."'

This morning I got my disability payment, $950. That’s pretty high for disability, but it’s the only income I have.

I just paid the rent, which is $1084, split between me, my gf, and my roommate. Roomy paid their part, but gf didn’t have hers, so I covered it. That’s $722. Spotify took $12. I bought a $10 pack of eclipse glasses on amazon. We spent $57 on food.

I have $100 left to last me the rest of the month.

We weren’t able to pay the water and power bills last month, we were hoping to get them when I got paid, but together they’re about $220. And that’s last month’s bills.

Let's Help Some Huskies!

Hello!

This post is about something near and dear to my heart, saving dogs. Most of us like or have pets, right?

I decided I wanted to give you the opportunity to help a woman in Oklahoma who is making a huge difference to the Husky population.

Husky Halfway House is a 5-star rated 501c3 charitable organization. They have over 120 Huskies they've saved from kill shelters and other bad situations. They're currently recovering from a nasty round of K9 flu/strep zoo that quickly ended the lives of 4 of their dogs, including the family's pet Husky. Two of the dogs died on the way to their vet, 2 hours away.

To keep this sort of tragedy from happening again, they have closed their doors to intakes for the time being, and are shifting their focus toward adding an on-site vet clinic to their property. They need both supplies and money, to make things happen. Supplies for the dogs they currently have, and money for both their current vet bills reaching upwards of $10,000, and an estimated $200,000 to install the clinic. They need to get this done, so they can get back to pulling at-risk dogs out of shelters, puppy mills, and so on.

In their first day of asking for help, donations reached over $5000 on Facebook, and more through their Paypal and Venmo links. The only number I can see is the FB amount. I don't work for H3, but it's broken my heart, seeing how hard this week has been on the people giving their all for these dogs.

Been developing some T.rigun ocs. Not all have names, but most of these newer guys are also bounty hunters. Basically thought of an episode slash arc in the manga that would be like, Gill gets a letter and the top six bounty hunters on the planet are being invited to come and work together to capture Vash. At first she wants to just refuse, but they all decide to go because Gill knows all those bounty hunters and like how they all act. A if they go then they know their whole plan, B if they can prove they can't catch Vash then their team work is going to quickly disappear. They go, the team acting as Gill's new bounty hunter team mates and Vash in disguise with his face covered. These ocs are the ones they meet and along with Gill are the top bounty hunters around, in monetary value gained from bounties and in skill.

Maleficence Maelstrom: I started thinking of him a lil bit ago, before the others, as just a sort of rival. He's a dangerous slinger, seems to go out of his way to not turn in his bounties alive. He and Gill often clash. They worked together once, but after Maleficence shot their bounty, she refused to split the payment. She wouldn't take any "blood money". After that partnership, they've hated each other. He's sadistic and mean with a tendency to taunt. He likes trying to get people to pick fights and is an expert in duels. He often wears a sharp grin and has a certain condescending swagger.

Mayhem Wayham: He's a cool dude. Pretty cheerful and laid back and a constant flirt. He likes asking women to marry him casually. He and Gill get along. He likes a joke and to party, but he has a knack for stopping a fight and cooling people's anger. He's pretty easy going. Uses a bow with augmented arrows.

A set of two girls, their title includes twins and they act like two twin sisters except they're fully unrelated. They just met and realized they look similar and like the other and decided to go with being twin sisters after. They're all around pretty nice, though with their own typical rough edges. They and Gill get along. Love to drink together and are loud.

A set of three. Their nicknames are like judge, jury, and executioner. The bounty hunter nicknamed as their judge picks their bounties and is like a leader. They decide whether to take their bounties alive or execute them based on their judgment of the crimes they are wanted for with their bounty. Gill isn't a big fan of them; while most of the others do whatever is necessary with a fight and Gill can't exactly fault them, she always says to not severely harm or anything their bounties, she can't agree with acting as the sole decider of executing a bounty like that set does. They're also a polycule.

A muscular Amazon of a lady. She is almost an authority figure to other bounty hunters, able to get them in line when together. She's a kind woman with a strict side but it's like a well meaning sterness, she is thoughtful often of others. Likes handing out treats. She and Gill get along well. She is the person who decided to try getting all six top bounty hunters to work together; insists it's not for greed but simply to stop that dangerous guy.

I also have another oc who's not a bounty hunter. She's new.

She's an outlaw, a rather flamboyant person. She respects above everything else great passion. Passion for anything as long as they're devoted. This includes romance; in a fight with Vash she knocks him unconscious and Gill arrives to help him and when she gets between them she's prepared to fight her. She sees Gill's passion and decides to stop fighting. She says she couldn't think of getting between a fellow passionate shooter and the source of their passion, and leaves. After that encounter she and Gill have a sort of respect towards each other. Lmao

I found this interesting. Flynn’s right—trad publishing is looking for the sure, sellable thing instead of good books. Bean-counters have their place, absolutely—but it’s not at the wheel.

And with only five big trad publishers instead of a healthy ecosystem of players, you get a bland monoculture very quickly.

In the short term, a bland monoculture of pablum does sell, because people are hungry to join what the crowd’s talking about. In the mid- to long-term, it robs your entire publishing house of anything approaching legitimacy or real art.

Unfortunately, the mid- to long-term isn’t where the focus is. It’s all about those short-term profits, and when they stop happening a vicious spiral of squeezing authors’ already marginal payments begins.

The industry’s ripe for a major realignment. But when that happens, a lot of new, marginalized, emerging, and midlist writers are going to be tossed out because they can’t absorb the financial hit of still writing while the Big Five are crashing or splitting.

We’re going to lose so much when that happens. And it’ll probably happen while Amazon is tanking at the same time.

Because Amazon will tank. Its metastasis isn’t sustainable, and after it’s consumed everything it can it’ll ravage itself right out of business.

The only question is how bad the damage to everyone and everything around it—including publishing—will be.

This won’t happen overnight, and may not even happen soon. But it will happen, most likely when economic forces shatter the Gilded Age bullshit going on in every industry right now, not just publishing. The coal-mine canaries are dead in their cages, and it’s only a matter of when the right spark will hit the creeping gas.

And when it happens we’re going to lose so much. So many voices, so many books, so many stories will never see light of day because writers—the people PRODUCING THE DAMN WORK—are already paid a below-poverty-level pittance and treated as less than serfs.

It’s not going to be pretty. And self-publishing’s perceived “ease” (which has the same privilege requirements getting on the internet in the first place does) will not pick up the slack.

The internet is NOT ubiquitous. It just feels that way if you have the hardware, time, and and money to access it. Self-publishing is not easy or ubiquitous either, for the same reason.

Anyway, I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to be wrong. Please let me be wrong...
