Protip: Never trash your "failed" drafts!
There have been so many times where I've gotten a sudden spark of inspiration and before I know it, I've written a chapter's length of paragraphs...only to realize that its just not the best fit for where my story's right now :/
Key words: right now.
I just posted a chapter using scenes that I wrote months and months ago and abandoned in Google Docs because I thought I'd never get to use them.
Keep everything you write, even if you think it's badly written or that you'll never get to use it. Cause one day, you just might find the right fit for it :)

I’ve been drinking more tea than usual, both herbal blends for health and wellness but also black tea and green tea. It’s warming to the soul and the body, both! I was delighted and surprised when my @sipsby box arrived a few days ago. I’d forgotten about it in the crush of stress. This box contained offerings from. @smithteamaker - British Brunch black tea, Jasmine Blossom from @stashtea, a lovely herbal blend called Love by @pukkaherbs, and French Breakfast by @churchillsteas This is my last box from @sipsby for a while, but it’s been lovely having a slew of new teas in my life. #sipsbytea #keepcalmanddrinktea #onelump #splashofmilk #cuppatea #jasminetea #blacktea #herbaltea #teatime https://ift.tt/3dcNfgs

When you realize you've written a "novel"...
I have gotten multiple comments on my fic from readers saying that they "love this book," or some variation of that and while they made me feel so amazing, I found myself perplexed by the use of the word "book" and would often think to myself "oh shucks guys I know it's a long fic, but I wouldn't call it a book by any means."
Then I recently noticed that AO3 allows users to download epubs and mobis of fics, and then thought, "ohh maybe that's why people are calling it a book, they're reading it as an actual ebook!"
I thought that was pretty cool, so I download my fic as an epub myself just to see how the formatting would come out, and GUYS LET ME TELL YOU
You would not believe how shocked I was to find that my fic in "book" form has 600+ pages! I have accidentally written a novel man, how crazy is that? It is unreal what a passion for fandom can do for your motivations 😭

How long have you gone without updating your fic?
Or alternatively, how long have you waited for the next update in a fic you're reading?
I guess I'm just looking to feel less guilty lol. I just went to AO3 to respond to a reader's comment and I realized that at the end of this month, it'll be exactly a year since my last update. It's so frustrating because I love the story I've created so freaking much, but I haven't had the time or motivation to update in what seems like forever. It used to be that I could type a few paragraphs into a document almost daily, but now I haven't even had the time to open up Word for anything but academic papers. Grad school is kicking my ass. Sorry, dear readers 😭 I swear I'm not abandoning it!

To those who comment on smut...
You're wonderful, you're amazing, you're breathtaking. Seriously.
A few months back I posted a chapter with an explicit scene in it. It was the first and only in my longfic that had smut, and it was the first time I had ever published explicit content. I wasn't expecting a ton of feedback because no matter how much fluff I mixed in it was still porn, and not many people want to rave about how much they enjoy porn, written or not.
Still, the lack of feedback had me wondering if I was really that bad a smut writer. But today, I got a comment from a reader saying that they loved the scene and wouldn't mind more and ugh, it just really made my day and made me grateful that 1) they put themselves out there like that and 2) I'm not the only one who was turned on by what I wrote lmao.
This isn't to shame people who don't comment on smut, cause believe me, I get it. But I just wanted to spread love to those who do; I know it can be embarrassing, but I really appreciate you!!

Can't add original tags on mobile? (AO3)
I'm trying to add ORIGINAL tags to my work (i.e. tags not already in AO3's drop-down database) and I literally cannot add the tags. I type it out, but when I hit enter to submit it, the cursor just goes to the next text field. It's so frustrating. Has anyone else had this experience? If not, would any of you fellow mobile writers be willing to quickly test this out?
It could just be my own phone, but when I googled, I ironically had this tag come up in the search results.
So I guess at least one person knows my struggle, idk. I'm not gonna be anywhere near a computer for a long while so this is such a bummer. Thanks for any help, suggestions!

My fanfic had a wiki created for it...
But apparently it's been deleted 😭
I google my fic title and pairing every so often, usually when I get a burst of new subscribers, kudos so that maybe I could see where the new traffic is coming from. So this last time, I was SO excited to see that a whole wiki-type page was created for my fic! But when I clicked on the link that came up in the search results, I got a 404 "page has been deleted" error.
All I have is this little "preview" blurb that turned up in the search results:
"(Title of my fic) by (my username) on AO3 is a sweet and fluffy (pairing name) fanfic. While still incorporating th..."
And that's how it ends. I don't even know if the last word was "the" or "this" or "things" or ughhhh, I just don't know, and it makes me sad that I never will! What was I incorporating? Ahhhh. I feel like this person was about to go into some deep analysis on the elements of my fic, but then it just cut—
It's so maddening.
I've tried the Wayback Machine, and googled the hell out of other possible recovery methods, but nothing has worked. I even tried going directly to the part of the website where other wikis for my fandom had been posted, but it really looks like the one for my fic isn't there anymore, and yeah, I'm kinda mourning that I didn't discover it in time.
Why show me a link and preview text, Google, if it's not even there anymore?? 😩
Anyway, to the person who created this phantom wiki, thank you! Even just seeing those first few lines, and knowing that something I wrote made another human being want to create a page for it, makes me so happy!

Why is the uploading process for FF.net still so archaic?
Hi, everyone. Years ago I uploaded my first and only fic on fanfiction.net and that was all I'd ever known about how to post fanfiction to the web. When I discovered Archive of Our Own sometime in 2013, I started cross-posting my story there, and ever since then, I've found it so cumbersome to upload chapters to FF. Like, to the point where I dread even posting updated chapters to FF because the process is so much more tedious than it needs to be IMO, more especially when I need to go back and edit a chapter that's already been published.
Whereas with AO3, I can literally copy/paste my formatted text and post the chapter with the click of one button, with FF I need to:
Upload Word Document (or copy and paste)
Mark as DocX/Story (but don't mark as DocX if you actually wanna add it to your story...why is this option here?)
Upload to Story
Okay, so maybe you're saying to yourself, hey, thats only two more steps, that's not so bad. But I'm sure you all have had that experience of proofreading a chapter until you get sick of reading it, and are convinced that you've found every single typo, only to notice a few you've missed literally right after you upload it. Well, that's where FF's upload system is insanely annoying as well.
With AO3, I can hit "edit chapter," remove/fix the typo, and then hit the submit button. With FF, I gotta:
Open Doc Manager
Fix typos
Save Doc
Go to Story
Click "Content/Chapters"
Click "Replace/Update Chapter"
Click "Replace Chapter Content with Document"
Like...c'mon now. It irks my soul. Especially because I always, always find typos after the fact, no matter how much I proofread. Why do I need to go through seven whole damn steps to fix one itty bitty typo? Ugh.
/rant
It just seems like the site has barely changed from when I first started using it in 2009, usability wise and appearance wise. It's why I feel so much more comfortable using AO3, despite the tagging system being a bit much and it not having a PM feature (still holding out hope!)
TLDR: Does anyone else find FF not-so user friendly?
