In DQ8 there is a Monster Arena side quest. It was kinda boring and too RNG dependant to me to be fun. I aproached the Dark Prince demo with caution, but go surprised on how much fun I was having the game. Yeah, the monster doesn't do exactly what I want all the time, but is limited just for the arenas and is much more managle with all the config options. I may try a challenge run of this game in the future with the flexibility for team customization it provides.

Spitzfyre is Boscha’s last name! Bria’s “maiden” name is Thrombey, but she didn’t wanna get rid of it so she hyphenated it when they got married lol

Cassette beasts.

so i have played cassette beasts about halfway through, so spoilers are inbound.

for reference on where i am, i have just punched capitalism in the face, and know where every captain i need to defeat is. I just want to share my thoughts about the game so far.

-Ramtasm is a good boy. -Kayleigh is the Kaede of this game and i think she's awesome. -SPITZFIRE. ENOUGH SAID. -Meredith is my favorite party member so far. -Whenever i see Mothmanic all i can think of is angry Leif from bug fables. -I FUCKING LOVE NOWHERE MONARCH. -honestly fuck Morgante i don't trust them. -i think buffy is hot ngl. -Heckahedron is just an angry 4d cube. -Cat-5 is such a good pun and i hate it. -Eugene's honest personality and borderline self-destructive actions have captivated me/j -where the FUCK is Averevoir -i want more Alice-type puzzles with the bigger/smaller mechanic.

and that's about it. i love this game so far and i cant wait to see what comes next hi i'm back and i have slightly more info. -Ms. Amber is also hot -fuck man, this game is weird during the archangel fights -three for three with gwen ALSO being hot. maybe i'm just horny idk I HAVE BEATEN THE GAME -meredith is still the best imo -gwen what the fuck -aleph null is significantly less cool looking than the sum of it's parts. -i'm sorry morgante i didn't mean it heuhfuabkbefuai -i kinda love babbelith -who is mordread? -WHO IS MORDREAD -the new ranger recruit is definitely a furry -I WANT SUNNY AS A PARTY MEMBER SO BAD ASDKFGJHUNGAD -i want to learn the lyrics -fuck you averevoir. -i still have not beaten gwen for her afinity with being random is annoying. -i now have a gun T-Rex -i had this really weird dream that there was another hard to record beast, that looked like a brown otter badger. it was an earth type, and it's name was '???'

Signature tapes, for your companions in Cassette Beasts. Spoilers below.

Kayleigh/Sirenade/Decibelle: Decibelle is a mythical air dragon that has no need to touch the ground. It could represent having one’s head in the clouds, as the Mournchildren cult kind of do at the beginning of the game. It’s also interesting to note that Dorian refers to Mourningstar as a ‘serpent’. But Mourningstar is lurking in the subway and Decibelle fly free. Ultimately, Decibelle represents Kayleigh’s freedom from the cult. Also it's a singing monster, and Kayleigh is a musician.

Eugene/Clocksley/Robindam: The toy soldier. Eugene has adopted the persona of a fighter, but only because he doesn't know how else to define himself. He's acting out a role he thinks he's supposed to take on. That being said, I feel like I would love if Eugene, of all the companions, got an affinity for another beast at the end. Maybe Dandylion, because of the flowers. Eugene realizing that he could put good into the world by creating instead of fighting was very moving for me.

Felix/Brushroom/Fungogh: Thanks @tallgirlpetunia for figuring this one out for me! Felix is a painting and his signature tape is a painting beast, but also mushrooms need dead things to start growing. His signature tape aligns with the loss of his past career, and being OK with growth, and moving forward.  Meredith/Kitelly/Cat-5: Meredith defines herself with the media she likes, so a tv-faced cat is perfect for her. Also cats are considered more stand-offish than dogs, which parallels her introversion and difficulty making friends. Also of note, cats are very loyal companions to people who earn their trust. At the end of the game Meredith does not become a social butterfly, but she does open herself to a small, trustworthy group of friends.

Viola/Spirouette/Regensea: Spirouette is a dancer. Viola is more into acting, but they both touch on the performing arts. A lot of her story is already told in The 12th Night, but it involves taking on a disguise. Spiroutte’s face is slightly obscured and it’s kind of androgynus - unlike Regensea which is more overtly feminine. At the end of The 12th Night, Viola is out of her masculine disguise.

Barkley/Ice Pombomb/Spitzfire: Barkley is a pupper but he came here in the winter place. A good boy!

It was kinda hard to see in the official art of it on the wiki, but this is what the spitzfire’s wings look like??? Actually, not even; they’re a bit more squat

These doggos should not even be able to fly. The skin connects to the flank far too close to the shoulder. Also, that skin is thick. I thought it was just the fingers, but no, the skin itself is, too. And it’s scaled??? Probably why they stay so close to the ground, but I feel like they shouldn’t be able to stay in the air as long as they do, either. Like, they can use their wings to gain distance while jumping, and probably even glide a little if they leap from high enough, but it doesn’t seem like they should actually be able to fly

And what is with the third finger?? It’s not like dragons can’t have a finger extend from their elbow, but? there’s no elbow??? I shoulda started over when I realized it’s just a shoulder and wrist because it looks like there’s an elbow in my drawing and there definitely should be one, but there’s not???

Ah, and I just realized I drew the large claw facing the wrong way

Anyway, if I do ever manage to draw a spitzfire... I am definitely giving them proper wings

The floor of El's cottage in Cobblestone felt cool against his thighs, even in the evening heat. It helped that the shorts he wore rode up slightly, allowing his skin to breathe. He squirmed a little, adjusting his grip on the strip of fabric in his hands.

He'd been sewing all evening, unencumbered by the fate of the world or menial chores that Ryu had already graciously taken care of earlier that day. He'd actually just slipped outside to finish unhooking their shirts from the clothesline, too.

When the door opened, El lifted his head and Ryu entered with a basket pressed against his hip.

His face read discomfort though, his eyes downcast and his lips hanging down with a frown. El's smile dropped too, along with his sewing project.

<<What's wrong?>> El signed.

Ryu shook his head. He placed the basket next to El then sat down beside him.

“The children playing out in the sun were asking me about Tatsu.”

El frowned. His eyes danced from looking at the sack of potatoes hanging on the wall to Ryu's hands clasped in his lap.

Ryu looked over as El responded.

<<Are you okay?>>

“I’m just frustrated,” Ryu said. “Everyone thinks it's so cool that I once was a spitzfire.

“But little do they know the painful weight it has left on my conscience.”

<<I’m sorry.>>

Ryu shook his head again. El pulled him in for a hug, his hand stroking the width of Ryu's back.

Hugs from him were the best. Always a little too tight, but full, and fragrant like a fresh sprig of mint.

When El pulled away, he prepared his hands again. <<Do you want to talk about it?>>

"Have you ever been scared? That something will happen and all of this will disappear?" Ryu asked, gesturing to their home.

El hesitantly nodded. Ryu's frown worsened.

“What if this is all a dream, a curtain clouding my reality? Do I still have the potential to turn into a ferocious beast?”

El shook his head. <<That's over with now.>>

Ryu scoffed. “If only others were so ready to put the other 'me' behind.”

<<I know.>>

They sat in silence a moment. Lost in his own thoughts, El flinched when Ryu turned to him with another question.

"What are you most afraid of?"

El sighed. <<Something similar, actually. Losing everybody, everything. Failure. Corruption.>>

"Corruption?" Ryu repeated.

El nodded. <<It's childish. Just something that carried over from all the times I was called the 'Darkspawn.'>>

Ryu sighed. He crossed his legs and set his hands on his knees.

They both had their night terrors, El especially so. They both had faced the consequences of their actions for saving those in need and had come out of it with enough scars to last a lifetime. It sucked, but there was some saving grace in not having to travel the road of recovery alone.

El turned to Ryu again. <<Sometimes, I still can't believe the world has been saved. But it's a little reassuring to know I'm not the only one who remembers when it wasn't.>>

"Sometimes I wish I didn't remember," Ryu said.

<<Me, too,>> El signed. <<But then I never would have met you, so I think it was all worth it.>>

Ryu scoffed. "All for me?"

El grinned and nodded. <<Yes. All for you.>>

He pointed, then pushed his finger into Ryu’s chest and twisted. Ryu laughed, pulling El into another hug. He leaned back enough to kiss him on the cheek, then rested along the wall with El pressed against his chest.

“Thank you,” Ryu muttered.

“Mmhm,” El hummed, curling his arms around Ryu's middle.
