Grey Area

Why do people misjudge? And where do we fit in?

"You’re never going to be anything in life, is that what you want?” the goverment worker blared at me and my sister. I guess having worked a long time in a goverment office and day in day out dealing iwth unruly people and kids gave her the idea and sense of confidence what she was saying was right. Until she called my mother.

She hadn’t expected to meet kids who actually fell into the grey area. They fated the statistics didn’t work this time. SHe picked up th ephone and called. That’s when her face turned green. The drop of the stomach as a heard my own mother words through the phone cut her mid sentence saying ‘ i dont want them back i’ve changed the locks, you can have them’ and the phone hung up.

After which the lady got off the phone looked us overly sheepishly and began the process of making my suster and i legally indepependent. Since we were under the age of 16 this had to be an extreme sitiuation. She sai dit would take 2 weeks for payments to process, and a bus to the shelter and eventually foster care would be coming to pick us up.

My sister and I thanked her, left the room and then ran down the street like no tomoorow to avoid going to foster care.

the night I decided to leave.

I had a job, in fact I have worked since i was 13 years old. At the time i was woking in an ice cream store down the road, and my sister and i would swap shifts at night and day time.

I had given thop over to my sister and walke dhome.

The contempt i felt for my moms drinking over the years came out in many different ways.

One was on my guitar and making up songs about how crap she was and singing them outside of her room.

Otehr ways wer eby yelling, and searching her room for bottles and emptying them beofre she woke.

I even tried once to plead BWS to stop selling her

but this fell on deaf ears.

Id fill vodka with water and throw red wine out but there she’d go drinking mouth wash, methalated spirtis, and vanilla essence in times she absolutely couldnt get anything.

and piss herself

Tonight - I don’t know i decided I owuldn’t be a teenager. That tonight I’d do my best to not get mad, that through all the faikures of rehab, maybe the rational daughter i could be could get through to her. I was calm. I picked the lock to her room and entered.. there she was passed out in vomit and piss. and i started clearning out all her hiding spots.

i gently pput 16 bottles ont eh floor of my room and covered them with a blanket. i stepped out my room and closed the door quietly behind me

and there she was

standing there in my face

how dar you you little bitch

she had come to the habbit of calling me a bitch at this point in my life it was like my nick name

and as i tried to tell her this was enough and i wouldnt be trying again after this to get her to stop she raised her and and back handed my face so hard my eye instantly watered

then the back of my head then my afce again over and over telling me i deserved this

Youdeserve this and this and she punded my th eback of my skull and the side of my face with everything she could manage.

I thought she was going to kill me

even at the time she had the hair dryer in the bathtub and grabbed me and tried to pull me in with her i hadnt felt truly in danger.

but this was it

i ran out of the house cryingI ran to the ice cream store and told my sister we were never to go back

shed then spend the next day throwing our stuff out of the house

changing the locks

and having me and my sister sleep on the beach for 2 weeks and under bridges

i still continued to work but my boss almost fired me

the school didnt understand and the teachers soon became gosspers

people mislead by the outwards forms of humans, The true answer to snobbery is not to say there is a better or worse person but to insist better or worse live in constantly unexpected places and carry none o fthe outwards signs of distinction.

We are all poor judges of the worth of others, our ultimates duty is to be kind, good, and imaginitive about everyone, even ourselves
