Space and time have originated effortlessly, spontaneously, from that primordial source, which exists by itself. The Self is always a witness. Man identifies himself with the mind, which superimposes the active world on the Self. Through this mistaken identification, man undergoes happiness and misery as being displayed by the mind. Under any circumstance, the Atma is never affected by the pairs of opposites like happiness and unhappiness, pleasure, and pain. The illumined man who knows this Truth, does not have any fear or anxiety whatsoever from the material world.

The entire objective display is an illusion, because the whole phenomenon is experienced only within the body, in the mind. Mind is subtle and inward. How can anything gross be produced or displayed by the mind, within the body? So, the conclusion is very decisive. Either there are no world and objects at all or the whole display is a mere illusion, like our dream!

Joy, happiness and contentment are not sensory or external. They solely relate to the inner mind and heart. Mind is not material. It is spiritual to the core. Our heart and mind do host beatitude in our inmost recess, untarnished by all sensory involvements. Everyone is equally proximate to this great inner treasure. The difference is merely in recognizing its presence and worth. The wise and saintly betake to it with full resolve and resignation. Others are indifferent to it just as the animals living in the forest are indifferent to the fragrance of sandalwood. Inner treasure can be accessed only by employing discrimination (viveka) – the art, skill and merit of our intelligence.

Devout listening is as much real as seeing or doing, for the mind. In the mind level, all are mental imprints. Hearing is thus as effective as performing a sacred sacrifice. It is thus that through devout listening, what all are otherwise unlikely or impossible, stand gained by the mind, as we find in the case of King Pareekshit.

In devotional pursuit, adorn your heart with full attunement and surrender to the Supreme. Install God in your heart, give Him the supreme position in life, so that His thoughts will direct your senses, mind and intelligence in all that you do. By this, svārtha (self-centredness) will dissolve, and parārtha (other-centredness or universality) will reign. Only by ‘dispossessing’ everything, you become fit to ‘possess’ the supreme Lord.

Seeking Truth or moksha is a very rare fortune. But the pursuit will bear fruit only when closely nursed by vairagya or dispassion. To deny the usual surroundings or relations, or to seek distance from these, can at best help develop detachment. But real detachment will grow naturally and well only when the transient nature of everything- relations, positions and possessions- is felt deeply at heart constantly. It is in the right company of the wise that the seeker gets exposed to the true wisdom as also to that constitutes real detachment.

Householder life and relations are sure to generate the sense of mortality and the resulting fears and discount. Equally, the knowledge gained from the usual centers of learning cannot elevate the mind to the spirit’s freedom and ecstasy. Association with the Wise and the holy abodes on the other hand brings higher knowledge and bestows the grace of immortality. Only from Satsang can the mind derive inner Enrichment and enlightenment.
