“Ah your reputation is undoubtedly deserved, Lord El-Melloi. Hearing your lecture was quite the privilege!” Alistair smiled politely as he spoke to the older man.

“Lord El-Melloi the second, if you wouldn’t mind.” There was no reason for him to get into the specific of why he emphasized the suffix, but being referred to without it, even if the entire name was a mouthful, he was reminded how unworthy he was to fill the shoes of the man that held the position before him. Fussing to gather his papers into his bag, the professor pursed his lips at their excitement, praising the lecture and reputation. “While I understand that you speak from an place of good intentions, I’m afraid that flattery will not earn anyone a gold star in my book. I am pleased you enjoyed the lecture, however.”
Yes, if anything, knowing that his lecture had made an impression was something that genuinely made him happy. The difference he could make for students, even if it was a small fraction in comparison to what other professors could do, was what made everything seem worthwhile. “Were you wanting to attend future lectures on a regular basis? You do understand that I only accept students into my classroom if they are by recommendation or through my own approval.” Not that he ever rejected many students that came to him.
