The Suchoptera

The Suchoptera seems as though it's a chimera of different creatures. The overall body plan is that of a crocodilian, yet there are hints of a particularly spinosaurid nature as well. Its wings further set it apart, lending it the ‘ptera’ portion of its name. Despite these ancient (and giant) lineages, the suchoptera is actually of moderate size, able to sit across a person’s shoulders (even if only barely…).

This perching behavior should be taken with a dose of caution, however. Like any crocodilian, the suchoptera has a range of behaviors from snappy and aggressive to calm and, frankly, kinda cute. Though, while the creature can be much more curious and friendly than your run-of-the-mill alligator, it can also be much more aggressive with some reporting swarms swooping in to nip and bite at whatever they can reach. Even when in its good graces, it is advised for people to stay alert. As curious as the suchoptera can be - and how cute its resulting chitters and croons may sound - one must not forget that even a smaller crocodilian can pack quite the bite. This already nasty bite is made worse by the bacteria in the creature’s mouth, and withholding treatment is a surefire way to get an infection.

Thankfully, the suchoptera is uninterested in prey much larger than themselves, primarily targeting the smaller mammals and reptiles that share its marshland home. But its range isn’t just terrestrial, of course. The suchoptera has mastered hunting in all three domains of its habitat. While it prefers ambush hunting like traditional crocodilians, the suchoptera doesn’t have longer legs and large wings for nothing. In the water, it will gladly snap at any fish or frog it can get its jaws around. On land, it can wait patiently in the leaves, ready and willing to pursue its prey if necessary. This attack can also come from above, and the suchoptera will sometimes climb so high into the trees that it will dive down and snatch a bird out of the sky. Though the suchoptera is social with members of its community, it does not necessarily share its hunts. Until a large predator comes in and activates their swarming behavior, that is.

Highly speculative Spinosaurus paleoart! There's a lot going on here, I tried to take into account its ecological niche of being a river walking fish eater. Sort of stork or heron-like. I don't see much of a need to blend in being such a massive and niche animal. So I based the coloration on some semi aquatic birds. I increased the size of the head crest by a lot because I ADORE the idea of large theropods with bird-like crests and combs. Honestly I think it could have been even more extravagant for sexual selection, but who knows. I also covered parts of the "beak" with a hard covering that extends up the face and onto the crest. And added lips because I feel like that just makes sense with how the skull looks. But I'm not a paleontologist so!! Who knows!! Big duck!

Okokokokok- ignore how rough and messy some of these redraws/sketches are - but it's apparently also dinosaur month?? (WHY did no one ever tell me it's Jurassic June? I love dinosaurs) And like. What if Rise but dinosaurs?!

I don't often post such loose sketches but I wanted to show these off cause I really like some of this.

Design choices and dino species + the reasons I picked them bellow (looking for potential Donnie dino suggestions):

Clothes: Without the shell they really need clothes. They'd all have pretty much the same pants to keep some unity, except maybe Mikey (I decided they should all have the same pants after I finished the Mikey sketches, not sure if I'll keep the shorts or change to pants). Accessories are a mix of pre and post finale.

Raph - I think would keep it simple and practical but would also wear nice jackets and stuff when in casual situations. I need to work on giving him an alternative outfit and tweak his accessories a bit.

Donnie - An oversized pull-over hoodie cause we already know he loves that shit. We see him wearing it all the time. Easy enough. He wears a comfortable singlet underneath so the straps of his battle sail don't rub. Nice soft fabric, tight fit so it doesn't move around, tucks it into his pants, etc. When he wears the battle sail he won't overheat so he can wear hoodies basically all year round.

Leo - He's in one of those shirts with obnoxiously large arm holes and make it cropped cause 1. I think he would 2. I want it to be different from Raph and Donnie's singlets. He usually wears the shoulder strap off his shoulder but pulls it up when he needs to. He has some of the black bandages over his mid drift atm but I might just make his pants super high waisted in the final version. He'd probably wear a bomber jacket (also cropped?) over the top for cool weather, but doesn't like to hide his feathers.

Mikey - I think he'd mostly wear hand me downs when he's younger. He definitely goes through a stage of rebelling and wanting to pick his own and would find a middle ground of appreciating sharing some of his brother's clothes and modifying them, as long as he has the choice of his own available. Not sure if that would be before or after this design. At the moment he's got Raph's old shorts (from a loooong time ago), Leo's old shirt, and Donnie's old zip up hoodie. He does have his own accessories though, including pins instead of stickers.

Dinosaurs: I kept them all as non-avian dinosaurs, AKA not including animals that are colloquially considered dinos but aren't (like pterosaurs). I wanted to keep an even split of herbivore vs carnivore just so one wasn't the odd one out. I wanted to keep most of their body structure, colours and distinguishing features the same as canon. Obviously I added tails cause, yeah, of course haha. I did want them to be recognisable as different species of dino using distinct characteristics that their species is known for. I did ignore a lot of differences though, like size and bipedal vs quadruped (although the quadrupeds might be more likely to go to all fours, especially when fighting or afraid). Leo and Donnie are carnivores so have sharper teeth and claws.

Raph - Some kind of Ceratopsian (likely Triceratops or something very similar) and he was the first idea I had for this and I'm really happy with it. I think it just suits him. Trike Raph just came to me in an unprecedented moment of genius. His spikey frill replicates his spikey shell. His sturdiness, protectiveness and willingness to kick ass when needed, all scream trike to me.

Donnie - Spinosaurus but looking for other species recommendations. More details below: So I wanted to figure out a way for him to have tech with a similar function to his battle shell (in the sense that it's something that helped him in day to day life) and so I went with spino cause one possible theory about a function of spinosaurus' sail is temperature regulation. So his battle sail has heating/cooling systems as well as other tech. A spino's sail was probably not fragile but the battle sail would also help protect it from being targeted during fights or crushed during extreme impacts. It was also thought to be used for display, and what's more of a display than a battle sail? The only problem I have with this is that it's lacking part of what makes Donnie's battle shell so great, which is that it is essentially a prosthetic. Not quite the same as how prosthetics are used in people of course, just in the sense that it is replicating the functionality of a body part that he doesn't have (I can't think of a better word). Well he does have a shell but it doesn't function in the same way that his brothers shells do, which leaves him with less defense than they have, hence a big reason for the battle shell (I hope I explained this well, it was hard to try and word properly). I can't think of a good way to do this with dinos. I was thinking of a carno or something with tiny arms, then Donnie could have tech enhanced arms but I'm pretty much ignoring body structure in the others so it would be weird to have just Donnie be affected by a difference in limb structure/functionality. I was thinking prosthetic tail but every non avian dinosaur had a pretty substantial tail. Except therizinosaurus but even they hade pretty obvious tails. I'm open to suggestions for this one if anyone has ideas. It does have to be an extinct non-avian dinosaur (anything not in Avialae), preferably carnivore but if someone suggests a really good herbivore or omnivore then I can try and swap Mikey for a carnivore. I want there to be an even split. I also wanted to give him something different on his face, like his brothers, and that could only be a little spino crest and it crowds the top of his head but I can't put it anywhere else...

Leo - A type of Dromaeosaur. I was tossing up between this and a dilophosaur where his red stripes were part of the dilo's crest, cause I wasn't sure about giving him feathers. But dilo Leo was so plain compared to the rest and the crests were hard to get looking right so I went back to raptor Leo. I can definitely imagine him literally and metaphorically preening his feathers too. You can't really see it but he does also have that big raptor claw. Raptors were smart, tactical and worked in packs so I think that suits him. I wasn't specifically referencing how some artists draw Leo's stripes coming off his face (I was just trying to replicate his stripes somehow, even though it doesn't make a huge amount of sense) but I realised afterwards that it kinda looks like that and might have been subconsciously inspired by it.

Mikey - Is an Ankylosaur. I'm pretty happy with the species but I need to work out the design of his armour plating so that it looks interesting, cool and protective but isn't too chunky, too pointy or super lumpy looking. I went with an anky cause Mikey is often hiding in his shell and he can't do the same here but he could curl up in a defensive ball. Plus I could imagine him using his tail club in his razzmatazz fighting style. A little like his kusari-fundo or nunchacku/nunchucks (not sure on proper wording).

i miss my wife, tails.

so lets talk about him.

⟢ leon was 6 years old when his family was murdered. there was a time when he could remember all of their faces. yet as he gets older, their faces have become a lot more blurry. sometimes he catches himself staring into the mirror. did nonno have the same nose as he did? was he the same blonde as his nonna? does he have his moms' smile? were his dad's eyes just as blue as his? when they looked at him, did they see themselves in him as he's so desperatley trying to remember them in him?

⟢ leon is the italian version of a "no sabo" kid. he knows the language, yet doesn't seem to be able to put the words together himself. he just kinda stands there nodding his head with a blank stare. then when he has to respond he's just kinda like "uuuhhhh tbh idk". he knows how to correctly pronounce some words and phrases, but that's about it.

⟡HOWEVER, he will call his lover with italian terms of endearment, i.e., amore mio, cucciolotta, cuore mio, piccola, etc. he might even say some phrases that he does know in italian, i.e., Io e te per sempre (you and me forever), sei la mia vita (you are my life), ti amo tanto (i love you so much), etc.

+p.s. sorry for any misinterpretations, i'm not italian but i am mexican so spanish and italian are not too different (???) but please correct me if i'm wrong!

⟢ leon has always been a dinosuar guy. he's watched probably every dino documentary thats ever been made and rewatches them whenever they're on. so, naturally, whenever he travels for work, he'll try his best to visit every museum he possibly can to see their dino exhibit and nothing else. of course, as het gets older (probably DI to RE6) he'll explore the other exhibits but for rn he'll just stick to the dino exhibits. and if you must ask him what his favorite dinosuar is, he'll say the answer he said as a kid, a spinosaurus. it's common enough for people to know and not give him a strange look of confusion. but really, his heart belongs to the pachycephalosaurus.

⟡ of course, in its natural progression, leon will also delve into a fascination of raptors and reptiles. he'll go to zoos and spend his time in the reptile exhibit. he'll also go bird watching for any avian raptors he can find. this also does mean that he has nice pair binoculars and will buy a native bird identify guide when he travels. his documentary options have now expanded with his two new interests which really excites him.

⟢ whether you believe it or not, leon is actually more of a fruity cocktail kinda guy. he doesn't mind beer or hard liquor, especially when he needs something strong and to the point. something to help him drink away the bad memories and all too realistic nightmares. but if he's just in the mood to enjoy himself, leon will cook up a salty dog or a cranberry vodka.

⟢ leon oh so terribly wants kids. but before he forces you into his life, he never thought that to be possible. so in his off time, he would volunteer for the NICU at the local hospital to be a baby cuddler. he got into it after he tried it with rebecca. it gave him the sense that everything will be okay, that even if he can't have a few of his own, at least he can be there for little ones that need someone, even if its for a moment.

⟡ TRUST, that once you do have a baby with this man, he's all over them. that baby will never not be in his arms or in the proximity of him. he's on spit up and diaper duty. baby wakes up late at night crying? no worries, he's already in the room (he was sleeping on the nursery floor). you will almost have to battle this man to hold YOUR baby.

⟢ leon is actually a really big fan of romcoms and time pieces. in fact, his favorite time piece movie is pride and prejudice. oh he absolutely adores romantic pieces like that especially because he's a hopeless romantic at heart. he's fallen in love with the idea of falling in love with a girl he's just met and having soft intimate moments with them. his guilty pleasure romcom is 13 going on 30, especially since after the whole plagas incident, the movie was just released and he binged that movie on repeat.

⟡ BUT, just because he likes time pieces and romcoms doesn't mean he doesn't like action or thriller movies. leon's a really big fan of the matrix series and star wars series. also the fast and furious franchise is actually where his love of fast cars and motorcycles stem from. he just can't do any horror movies because baby has trauma :(

Summary: Being sick is never fun

With Mommy now playing for West Ham, it means you get to hang out with Harper.

Harper's not as rough as you and Mommy always has to remind you not to be so rough with your playing in case you both get hurt. Harper doesn't seem to mind though because she always gives you a little kiss hello and goodbye at the end of the day.

Harper's mommy Mini tries to stop her a few days ago because she caught an illness from kindie but she wasn't quick enough.

"No," Your Mommy says firmly when you lean in to kiss Harper's cheek too," Harper's sick remember?"

You grumble a little bit but don't argue, content with just being allowed to hold Harper's hand in yours as you all troop out to the cars. You wave goodbye to her as Mommy bundles you into your car seat.

Mom is already at home when you get there and you try to run off to greet her but Mommy snags you by the back of your shirt.

"Remember," She says," Slow and careful."

You huff but nod, moving slowly like you're a T-Rex stalking its prey.

Mom smiles at you. "Come on, Chook," She cajoles," You can move faster than that."

You snap into action faster than Mommy can stop you and you crash into her.

Mom laughs and lifts you up.

You whine a little wiggling away and she frowns.

She lifts up your shirt and sighs. "Did you fall again today, Chook?"

"Was playing with Harper!" You reply," Was only a little fall!"

"Well, that's not a little bruise. Kristie! Can you chuck me the bruise cream? Chook's got herself hurt again!"

"Doesn't hurt," You deny. You try to squirm away but Mom lathers cream all down your side. You stop fighting a little quicker than usual though because out of nowhere your head starts aching.

Mom adjusts her positioning so her knee is properly stretched out as Mommy comes to sit down on your other side, letting you sip from her drink.

You grow bored of hanging out with your moms though and squirm out of your seat to go and find Helen and your dinosaurs.

Your head starts pounding on and off for the rest of the day and you push your food around your plate even if it's one of your favourites.

Mommy tries to change you into your Spinosaurus onesie but it's much too hot for you and you keep pulling the zip down no matter how many times Mommy pulls it back up again.

In the end, Mom makes Mommy change you into pyjamas that you only really wear when it's stupidly hot but they're still dinosaur themed so you like them.

"Stop touching it," Mommy says sternly when she notices you poking your bruise.

You don't understand why she gets so annoyed. Bruises are super cool and this one has gone a really dark purple colour. Mommy gets worried when bruises are like that so you stop poking and prodding at it even though Mom's laughing at it all.

Your nose feels kind of runny and you swipe at it before Mommy can see.

Mommy worries a lot. She worries even more now that Mom hurt her knee so you go to bed without telling her about your achy head, your runny nose and your scratchy throat.

Tomorrow's her day off anyway so it's meant to be the day that Mommy can relax.

That's why when you wake up the day after feeling so much worse than before, you don't tell anyone.

You sit in your play corner where you can keep an eye on Mom and play with your dinosaurs. Helen mews softly as she approaches, headbutting you in the arm before sitting down next to you.

You tickle her behind the ears but your arm feels a bit heavy and you drop it to the ground. Your other arm feels heavy so you stop playing with it too.

In the end, you just sit facing the wall, staring at your dinosaurs and making up a story in your head.

Sam narrows her eyes as she watches you, staring. You don't move for a long while and if it wasn't for the small rise and a fall of your shoulders, she'd have thought that you'd fallen asleep then and there.

You're being a little strange today. You hadn't woken up early like you usually did on days off. You hadn't come running in demanding someone play with you outside or squirmed away when Kristie inspected your bruise at breakfast.

It was out of character for you and Sam can do nothing but stare as Kristie blows out her nose next to her. She must have caught something off Mini at practice.

Sam knew Harper had been ill recently and it all begins to make sense.

Everything happens at once. Your bad behaviour suddenly has an explanation just as you convulse suddenly in your play corner.

Helen meows loudly, jumping up and running away as the sound of something wet hits the carpet.

You burst into tears.

Sam stands up too quickly and falls back onto the sofa as her knee radiates pain in protest.

Kristie surges up too, perhaps too fast as well because her head throbs but she's really the only uninjured person in the house.

You've thrown up all over the carpet and your favourite dinosaurs. It runs down your chin and you sob.

"Oh, Chook," Sam says, stubbornly getting up again and reaching for her crutches," It's okay. Don't cry."

Kristie makes quick work of taking your top off and then your bottoms even though her own medicine hasn't kicked in yet and her head still aches like hell. You've clearly gotten the worst version of this sickness.

You just sob harder, blabbing and gagging when you realise that you've got the same taste of sick in your mouth. "No, no," You say when Mommy begins to walk you into the bathroom, "Mom-Mom...Her knee hurts."

"I think you're the priority here, Chook," Mommy says but you shake your head as she pops you into the bath and turns on the taps," Mom's a big girl. She can take care of her own knee right now."

"No...No! You help Mom's knee! I'm not sick! Was an accident!"

Mommy just hums as she gently washes your face with a flannel.

Mom pops her head in through the door.

"I've got medicine for her and her Stegosaurus towel."

Mommy takes it. "Go and sit down, Sam," She orders," Take some painkillers and ice your knee."

"I'll clean up the sick first."

"I'll do it," Mommy insists. She plucks you out of the bath and puts your towel over your head. It's a bit like your onesie where it's got a hood that makes you actually look like a stegosaurus. You really love it but today you couldn't care less.

Mommy flips the hood up and you gag again.

You're moved quickly over the toilet and you throw up inside of it.

Tears prick in your eyes when you notice Mom still standing there. She goes to reach for you, to bend her knee but Mommy blocks her way.

"Go, Sam," She says," Go to bed and ice your knee. You're not any use to me right now. I'll send Chook to you once she's ready." She takes the medicine from Mom's hand and all but pushes her out the door.

"Sorry, Mommy," You say through your tears," Didn't mean to."

Mommy softens considerably from when she was dealing with Mom and she rubs your back as you weakly gag over the toilet bowl and nothing but bile comes up.

"Don't say sorry, Chook," She says to you," This isn't your fault. It's just bad timing is all, no one's angry."

"You were angry at Mom," You say, crying much harder than before," 'S your day off. You have to look after Mom. Sorry I made it harder."

Kristie's own nose is blocked and stuffy and her head pounds in agony (although she knows the medicine should start kicking in soon) but she still draws you in for a hug as you sob on her shoulder.

"It's okay, Chook," She coos even as you apologise over and over again," It's all okay. You're being brave. You're so good. You're such a good girl."

"I'm sorry!"

"Hey," Mommy says as she pulls away, gently wiping away your tears," You have nothing to be sorry about." She spoons the medicine Mom brought into your mouth. "Why don't you head on to bed with Mom? I'll be there in a little while."

You sniffle. "I can clean."

"No, Chook. You're very sick, like Harper was. And Harper's mommies didn't make her clean up, did they?"

You shake your head.

"Then you don't have to clean up either. Go on, go to bed with Mom."

You shuffle into Mom and Mommy's bedroom. Mom's got the tv on and a bag of ice pressed against her knee.

"Hey, Chook," She says when you come in, leaning down to lift you up.

"Sorry that you hurt your knee more, Mom," You whisper, knocking your head against her collarbone. You stay slumped on top of her as she gently works her fingers through the knots in your hair.

"It wasn't your fault. Accidents happen. I'm sorry you're feeling so sick."

Sam reaches to the side and drapes your favourite blanket over you. It's got little images of Mosarsaurus and Baryonyx on it and you go limp when she tucks it around you.

"Hey," Kristie says softly from the doorway.

"Hey..."

"I'm sorry," She continues," For yelling at you like that, in the bathroom. It was all..."

"Overwhelming, yeah, I know." Sam keeps gently stroking your hair as you sleepily puff out air against her collarbone. "I want to be more help, Kristie, I do-"

"Your knee won't let you, Sam. Don't beat yourself up about it. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. We're all trying our best here."

"But you're sick too. It's not fair that you have to take care of all of us."

"I'm barely sick. It's just a headache and a runny nose. I'll survive. What we need to work on is getting Chook to tell us when she's feeling sick, okay? We were caught off guard today. It won't happen again."

"Mommy," You say softly," My tummy hurts again."

Kristie sighs though she's smiling when she does it and lifts you easily into her arms. She doesn't get very far though when you're tummy has had enough and you throw up all over Sam's chest and your front.

She sighs. "If you get me a bin bag to cover my knee with, I'll hop in the bath with her."

"I'll get the Pterodactyl towel out of the dryer."

"It's a Pteranodon," You sniffle," Not a Pterodactyl."

Mom strips out of her shirt and takes you from Mommy.

"Sorry, Chook. Pteranodon, then."
