#GenovaMedioevale #ottaviosemino #centrurionebracelli #Spinola #gioandreaansaldo #centro storico #GiovanniAntonioParacca #GioAndreaAnsaldo #NicolòSpinola #palazzideirolli #genova #rollidays #liguria #igersgenova #italy #architecture #rolli #art #beniculturali30 #archilovers #travel #architettura #lamialiguria #palace #ilsecoloxix #centrostoricogenova #genovaturismo #italia (presso Via San Luca) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqN7XN-IprH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria
Artist: Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640)
Date: 1606
Medium: OIl on Canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., United States
Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria
The marchesa's young face, animated by her large, keen brown eyes and gentle smile, is set off by her enormous yet elegant ruff. Her commanding presence is further accentuated by the glowing satin, the lace of her gown, her jewels, and the elaborate hair ornament crowning her carefully curled locks. Behind her, the rich luster of the marble and stone of a palazzo add to the sense of limitless luxury.
The Spinola family, major art patrons in Genoa, derived their affluence from mercantile and banking enterprises. It was the norm for families to consolidate their wealth through intermarriage, and Brigida Spinola married her cousin Giacomo Massimiliano Doria in 1605. Widowed in 1613, she later married the widower Giovanni Vincenzo Imperiale, a senator of the Genoese republic who was also devoted to poetry and art collecting.

Alejandrina Gessler de Lacroix (Spanish, 1831-1907) after Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (Spanish, 1599-1660) La rendición de Breda, 1872 Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando Amongst the group of Spanish victors brandishing their lances, we can make out just as many individual expressions of exhaustion as we can amongst the resigned group of defeated Dutch soldiers. On June 5, 1625, Justin of Nassau, Dutch governor of Breda, handed over the keys of the city to Ambrosio Spínola, Genoese general in command of the Flanders thirds. The city had extraordinary strategic importance, and was one of the most disputed places in the long struggle between the Hispanic monarchy and the United Provinces of the North. Its capture after a long siege was considered a military event of the first order.
