Chapter 1: familiarity
Click! Of course, the sound of his camera held the ability to move you from being submerged in your thoughts; a bashful smile crept up on your face as that oh-so-familiar sound invaded your senses once more. Unbeknownst to you, the first time it played, it was to capture your candid snapshot.
Your boss had called you in for an emergency meeting, as he called it. However, you were well aware that it would be him gushing about Spider-Man for as long as he could before feeling obligated to release you back to your repetitive work cycle. A repetitive work cycle that had one consistent source of joy: your, unfortunately, limited interactions with Kim Seungmin.
Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man had been the most recent and prolonged talk of your town, a local superhero. Unsurprisingly, everyone was utterly smitten with him. Superhuman strength, agility, endurance, ability to stick to, climb and swing from walls and other surfaces, special ‘Spider-Sense’ warnings of incoming danger. All while patrolling the streets and helping those in need even with the smallest of matters. Intriguing, to say the least.
“Good morning,” he said, and you rose from your desk chair and replied with a tired expression.
“Morning,” you replied with more enthusiasm than intended.
He cracked a lopsided grin at your weariness and took his place by your side. You and Seungmin walked in comfortable silence to the office, you had been employees for your local newspaper for just under a year now, and although you will admit it took him a while to open up, you're glad he did. You would confidently consider him your closest work friend, and you both attended the same university where you would occasionally talk during your free time. Sadly, this wasn't as often as you would’ve liked. Perhaps your schedules clashed too much, but it was apparent that Seungmin was a busy man, a friendly face that was hardly ever around.
The spiderman craze had continued, and all your recent articles were about him. However, Seungmin seemed to be the only one with the god-given ability to constantly catch glimpses of the hero, resulting in his photography becoming the most popular. You were glad he was finally getting recognition, but you wish it didn't require a guy in a colourful spandex suit to have his artistry appreciated.
Your boss spent the entire meeting talking about said superhero; he stressed to both of you how important it is to keep up with his every move because what he does is so important, and the people love him. It was the least you could do as citizens he's protecting because what superhero doesn't want to be praised in the newspaper?
“Seungmin, do you have any new pictures for us?” the boy nodded in response.
“Good, they'll be used in the next article this friday.''
Your boss seemed satisfied with that and made the decision to let you go, although you were internally dreading all the deadlines and expectations awaiting you the moment you left this room.
The inevitable slam of the door behind you brought you back to reality; you sighed softly while settling back at your desk opposite Seungmin’s,
” Everything alright?” he asked, eyes remaining on the screen in front of him.
“Just a bit overwhelmed,” you continued with a defeated half-laugh, “balancing school and work is not fun.”
“I get it, I really do.” his flash of vulnerability disappeared with his squinted eyes and slender fingers pressing to the sides of his forehead in exaggerated anguish, “Too many essays…”
You chuckled at his playfulness and were immediately met with an approving smile once he noticed your mood had improved. The rest of the work day went by tediously, but you felt at peace knowing Seungmin was there, naturally bettering your day with his incredible comedic timing.
By the time you had finished and decided to head home, it was already dark; you gathered your things quickly, not wanting to waste any more time, and bid farewell to your co-workers.
You figured it's only natural to feel slightly apprehensive walking home alone as a woman. The worst outcome is when those feelings become more than that. It started with just catcalling; it usually does. You kept your head down and pace quick. You lived on campus, and there were always weirdos like this; you figured it was inevitable, and it'll be fine if you just ignored it.
“It’s been a long day, right baby? Need me to take the edge off for you, huh?”
It most certainly had been a long day, but this was not what you needed. You kept walking, but it had transitioned to a jog by now.
“Come on, don’t give me the cold shoulder! I know you want it.”
You grimaced, and that's when a collision with a man towering over you stopped you dead in your tracks, fear evident on your face.
"She's ignoring us!" The drunken idiot yelled incredulously, evidently upset from being resisted.
He took a step closer; he was so close you could almost taste the alcohol on his breath. It made you feel sick. You desperately tried to flee, wanting to avoid this situation. Still, one of the men harshly grabbed onto your arm and pulled you into him until his body was pressed flush against yours, causing you to writhe under his hold and your eyes to well up with tears that could only be held back by screwing them shut.
Suddenly, you heard a thwip sound from somewhere, and you instinctively flinched; sounds of protest could be heard, followed by more noises and then silence. You had ducked and curled up in a pathetic attempt to protect yourself, but as you let a few seconds pass by while labouring your breathing, you slowly allowed yourself to open your eyes and take in your surroundings.
The two men were discarded in an almost comical way. One with his limbs painfully wrapped around a streetlamp, and the other stuck to the floor in the same position as the chalk outlines in crime scenes, both men's mouths covered in the web.
Web.
You snapped your head up, and there he was. Only now had you noticed you had been enveloped by the shadow of his silhouette the entire time. The position he was truly spider-like; you exhaled in relief as he dropped down from where he was perched, keeping a safe distance between the two of you but still extending an arm out towards you should you need assistance. Now that you had seen him up close, you could finally pay attention to detail; the close proximity made you realise how human he was. You stood there just admiring in awe for a moment before he interrupted your train of thought.
“Are you alright?” concern laced his voice, and despite the mask, you swore you could feel the emotion behind it.
You didn't get a chance to respond before he continued, “I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner; I patrol this area a lot but fuck…I'm sorry,” he sounded so defeated.
You would’ve felt bad if it weren't for your inability to focus on anything apart from how familiar he seemed. You quickly brushed it off; your job is to take pictures and write articles about this man. Of course, he looks familiar.
“I'm okay,” you began with a reassuring smile, “thank you, really.”
He nodded, and you looked up at him; he was way less intimidating than how people characterised him. You fell subject to him in that moment and felt as if you could trust him with anything, including your life. You anticipated that; he was known for saving lives and, at times, carrying shopping bags across the road for the elderly. You snickered at your realisation, which caused him to tilt his head at you. The corners of your lips curled upwards as your gaze lingered on him, Spider-Man dropped his head slightly, and you heard him let out a breath followed by a mumble you wouldn't have caught if you weren't so entranced by him right now.
“Thank god you’re okay.”
Your eyebrows furrowed for a second, but you were given no time to react further before he began recollecting the forgotten men, “I'll get these two to the station. Get home safe y/n.” One last thwip sound during a blink, and he was gone. You had a dumbfounded smile at the thought of the amazing Spider-Man saying your name, and despite the cold nipping at the tips of your ears, you felt immersed with a sense of warmth as you made your way home.
