Well, it’s been a long time. But I think I have to re-read some of my fav fanfics again. After all, they were my first ship of this series. Just hope this revelation doesn’t ruin their 14 years of friendship.

Spencer was pacing in his kitchen, although he knew he should be doing something more productive. His intense mind untangled and sorted his thoughts apart from his feelings. Then there were the other things that were occurring in his, well, person. Things he could only describe as stirrings. His body had been full of tension since she had come back to the team. His years of profiling and analysis could not give him a satisfactory explanation to why.
He denied the rush of blood to his cheeks or the hunger of his mouth. He wasn’t in love with Jennifer Jareau; he just loved her. How was it that little word, a mere preposition could change reality as he knew it?
JJ was not the agent she was when she had left the BAU for the Pentagon. She wasn’t the same woman, period. The secret assignments, the missions overseas and the loss of Will were all layers of painful experience that had shaped her into this new person. A JJ re-imagined.
Returning to the FBI and her team was the most spectacular kind of homecoming. Her purpose was clear here, a central truth that guided her back to where she came from, a foundation. She knew she would always be a part of their lives, but the time away had changed her teammates as well. Most notably; Spence. He was calmer, a quiet confidence had sprouted in her friend. And after they lost Emily he continued to change in front of her.
JJ recalled his bright eyes earlier, the dark orbs processing so much. His concerned glances, totaling all her movements, noting the subtlest shift. The looks felt intimate, like his eyes were raking across her bare flesh instead of profiling her anxieties.
She closed her oversized blue eyes to shut out the distractions of the office. Starting a new job inside the familiar team dynamic meant paperwork and profiling assessments to secure her placement. JJ was no stranger to long hours or giving 110% effort. Just a few more forms and she’d have Henry’s cuddles wrapped around her.
The case was over, the unsub in cuffs. The hollowness of disappointment trapped Dr. Spencer Reid as he entered the basement cell. The victims were all deceased. The BAU weren’t going to be reuniting anyone with their waiting families today. Once the bodies were cleared and the cataloguing of evidence had wiped any remaining energy from the team; they packed up to jet back to Quantico.
It was when they got off the elevator that the grief of losing Emily hit him again. Right about now she would be trying to get someone to join her out for dinner, or perhaps drinks. Recalling her warm smile and striking intelligence left a crater in his armor. Spencer knew he needed a distraction. Perhaps he would hang out with JJ and Henry this weekend as his godson always brought the best of his emotions out.
JJ had been quiet on the flight, she had eased out of the elevator and was packing up some files on her desk. Spencer approached her hurried body tentatively. “Hey JJ?” His voice cracked, “Mind if I come over on Sunday? I would really like to take Henry to the Smithsonian they have a new exhibit on Tetrapods.”
JJ spun and smiled, her distraction obvious as the ever-graceful agent dropped her bag and then her key ring. Spencer bent down to pick up her keys, his brown eyes taking her nervous energy and trying to pinpoint its trigger. His sure hands hid her keys while she collected the papers back into their folder. JJ stood, while searching for her confiscated keys. Spencer waited until she finally made eye contact before he held up his hands in mock ignorance. ‘What keys? I haven’t seen anything?!’ His lips pursed against his rising smirk, his brows aloft in innocence.
She gave her desk and the floor one more glance before putting her hand out for Spencer to hand over his stolen goods. His amusement played at his features, but he didn’t break. “JJ, I’m sorry I don’t know where you put your keys.”
She huffed, her hands crossed over her chest. “Spencer, do not play games with me.” She wasn’t upset, but she knew he would hold out as long as possible. Her eyes were alight, her mouth set ferociously, Spencer stood frozen. The warm current was coiling through him again, the stirring of something primal and yet untasted stopped his game of keep away in its tracks.
JJ noticed the shift in his body, a weird tension and a loss of eye contact drew her concern to the forefront of her mind. “Spence? What is it?” JJ leaned in taking his forearm in her hand, a simple gesture that they had shared countless times. Spencer’s head fell, his gaze tracing the lines of her fingers around him. He cleared his throat.
“Nothing, just waiting for your answer. Can I come by to see Henry this weekend?” Spencer sidestepped. JJ didn’t buy it, but she didn’t push him either.
“Sure, just come by whenever. We both love having you over, Spence. You know that.” JJ held his arm with an increased pressure. Her other hand palm up, fingers curling for him to return the damned keys. “Just hand ‘em over and the weekend can finally begin.” She smiled coyly.
Spencer shrugged, “Sorry, JJ, I don’t have them.” He began to head back to the elevator. “But, if I were you, I would check your desk again.” Spencer waved as he walked way, never turning around. JJ shook her head, there in the top drawer, which she hadn’t opened were her keys.
I’ve been reading books of old The legends and the myths Achilles and his gold Hercules and his gifts Spider-man’s control And Batman with his fists And clearly I don’t see myself upon that list
Spencer was pleased with himself; Henry was asleep in the backseat. The two had a long afternoon of exploring the museum and eating the overpriced foodstuffs from the assorted snack carts. Spencer drove cautiously to JJ’s house, knowing she had been home from her run for a few hours. He had been wallowing in his grief most of the weekend, but spending time with Henry and JJ brought Spencer nearly back to his lively self.
He parked on the street, not wanting to block their driveway. Spencer quickly unbuckled the car seat and scooped the sleeping child into his long arms. Henry’s blonde head lolled on his godfather’s bony shoulder as they headed to the side door. JJ held the kitchen entrance open for them, smiling affectionately at those two men who held pieces of her heart.
Spencer shuffled past JJ and up the stairs to Henry’s room. He carefully set him on his twin bed and removed the boy’s shoes. He bent over to place a light kiss on Henry’s forehead before turning out the light. JJ was waiting in the living room for her friend, with two glasses of wine. His brown eyes were bright, excited to share their adventures with her. He rolled up his sleeves and sat in lotus position on the couch, facing JJ’s relaxed form.
The conversation came easily; the sharing of their days, the appreciative glances, and casual banter. Old friends are counted on to hold on to and to hold us together. For so many weeks Spencer had be coming here to cry, to share in the loss of Emily’s life. JJ caressed and cradled him as she held herself together, shielding him from her knowledge and her actions. But she couldn’t hide the tears of sympathy and guilt from occasionally escaping, however those tears’ source remained unquestioned.
Tonight was different, tonight was the frosting on the cupcake of the day. A brilliant day that Spencer would recall fondly for years; unnecessarily reminding Henry each time they returned to the museum. Spencer sipped the deep red liquid JJ had poured for him. The warmth coating his tongue as he thought of the chemical composition of alcohol and the fermentation process that occurred to create the drink. He smiled at JJ as her blue eyes notably relaxed with his continued imbibing.
But she said, where’d you wanna go? How much you wanna risk? I’m not looking for somebody With some superhuman gifts Some superhero Some fairy tale bliss Just something I can turn to Somebody I can kiss
“Thanks so much for taking Henry today, Spence.” JJ leaned forward, patting his calf. “I am so glad he has you to look up to.” She smiled, taking a sip of her wine.
“Anytime, JJ. I am no superhero or anything, but I hope a behavioral scientist is a decent enough role model for young Henry.” Spencer blushed, trying not to boast.
“Spencer!” She almost slammed down her glass. “You are so much more than the job.” JJ was shocked at his almost self-deprecation. “You are kind and thoughtful. Your worth is so much more than your genius or your pretty face. You know that right?” Spencer’s eyes had grown wide, his eyebrows hiding behind his drooping curls. JJ was now kneeling on the cushions, holding his knees in her hands. She needed him to see how wonderful he was.
Spencer turned to set down his glass, when his face rotated back, she was everywhere. She had leaned forward, demanding his kiss with her lips. His eyes were open while his hands were flailing and JJ was kissing him on the mouth! Spencer panicked for 1.32 seconds before surrendering. He exhaled into the kiss, closing his eyes and allowing himself to feel the tender skin nibbling him. His hands found her thin face, his long fingers reaching on to the nape of her neck. His fingertips buried in her soft locks.
JJ had thrust herself forward in such a way that she had to hold herself up on Spencer’s thighs. She was on all fours, deepening the kiss as her neck strained. She crawled forward, sitting squarely in Spencer’s lap. His long arms cradled her strong frame, leaning her head into the back of the plush couch. Suddenly they both froze; exchanging breathes and stares, heartbeats and silent questions.
Spencer smiled first, his eyes nearly disappearing with his joy. JJ reached up and stroked the side of his face, playing with the short strands of his hair. Her eyes vulnerable, but on her mouth curled a shy smile. She bit her lip in apprehension, Spencer left no time for doubt. He kissed her passionately, letting her know that this was real. He felt it too. He needed her kiss like he needed oxygen. He was in.
