Thank you so much for the tag @sleeplessincarcosa ✨
top ten favorite bands/musicians tag game!! This is gonna be a fun one!! I will include as much genres as possible...
Metallica - This band has been a part of me for as long as I could remember. It is a huge part of my childhood, and we even have a family tradition involving this band. Their music (and Guitar Hero) shaped my music taste into what it is today. And it was through this band I met a handful of wonderful friends whom I trust, and had fond memories with. Music-wise, they're very Mid™ imo, but "... And Justice For All" is a culturally significant banger and I will die on that hill. Also I have the biggest crush on Jason Newsted, so I consider that a bias too.
Varien - We all love a diverse Queen! She's mostly electronic music, and she's certainly not limited to a certain genre. Love her sound, listening to her albums feels like opening a box of chocolates, you never know what flavor you're gonna get, but guaranteed it's a banger. I put her high up the list because, I've been listening to her music throughout my college life when I needed music to comfort me. And when she came out, it was also about the time I have found out that I am trans and nonbinary. From that point on, I began to be more comfortable with myself, and eventually made me what I am today - proud and significantly more confident than before.
Shadow Of Intent - Of all my favorite deathcore bands, I chose this one because it's the first proper deathcore band I liked. Hearing "Reclaimer" for the first time was such an experience for me, that it decided that my favorite genre should be deathcore from now on. Before that, I was listening to....
BROJOB - THE Gayest Band On Earth ™
Periphery - The band with my most looped/played music, like ever. They're a prog metal band, more specifically Djent is not a genre. Their music is so full of texture and changing emotions, it's really hard to get sick of their music on loop for weeks on end. "Absolomb", according to Spotify, I looped for 200+ times during 2021, and I have also began to play it again! So I expect "Absolomb" to make a comeback in my Spotify numbers, as well as their new song "Dying Star". Spencer Sotelo is a phenomenal vocalist, super underrated and super talented.
Cattle Decapitation - My favorite death metal band of all time, more specifically their three albums "Monolith Of Inhumanity", "The Anthropocene Extinction" and " Death Atlas". These three albums has a mixed reaction - first, it's a glaring deviation from their traditional death metal sound, that it doesn't really count as death metal albums if it weren't for the band. Second, it's such a unique sound, amplified by Travis Ryan's "new" vocal technique. Nonetheless, these albums are amazing to me.
The Cranberries - There's something so beautiful in their songs I can't properly describe. I think it's mostly Dolores O'Riordan's vocal style? But that combined with the rest of the instruments sounds beautiful to me.
And here's a list of my favorite vocalists...
Dickie Allen - Deathcore vocalist, and he's the reason why I got into extreme vocals, although, I'll never learn extreme metal vocals anyway. His sound is unique and distinct, and his range is amazing. I just think he's so cool tbh.
Pop stars Sia and Adele, amazing women, amazing vocalists. I try to sing their songs once in a while, though I'm bad at it.
I am tagging... @yeehawkins, @vdk-hellscape, @brasideios, @greetingsfellownerds, @millythegoat, @voodoochild002, @eljeebee, @feckyeslife -- can't make it to ten, and I'm sorry if I missed someone ✌️

Periphery Partner With Race Service For AI Enhanced 'Atropos' Music Video
Periphery, who recently announced the March 10 arrival of their sixth album, Periphery V: Djent is Not a Genre, have partnered with Los Angeles-based creative agency, Race Service, for an A.I.-generated video for the song “Atropos”. “The feel of ‘Atropos’ features a push and pull between pretty/melodic and dark/chaotic sections,” explains Spencer Sotelo. “That gave me the idea to write about a…

#165 - Periphery IV: Hail Stan - Periphery (2019)
In terms of metalcore music that is combined with prog metal, my favorite has got to be Between The Buried and Me, but a close second goes to Periphery.
I knew of Periphery since I first started to get into more progressive metalcore music, though I haven’t heard them until getting attached to similar groups like Protest The Hero, The Human Abstract, and Animals As Leaders. While they aren’t the forefathers of djent, that title could go to Meshuggah or Fredrick Thordendal’s ‘Sol Niger Within’, Periphery definitely modernized it in my opinion, combining genres like industrial metal, post-hardcore, thrash, and even brostep into the mix, creating a highly intoxicating soup of melodic metalcore riffs and complex solos that intensify and glorifies the atmosphere all around me. While others may disagree, I’d say they are one of those bands without a single bad album. In fact, I’d double down and say their discography could even rival some of the best prog out there, with the only album I thought wasn’t as good as it could’ve been probably being their first, but only due to a more production and mixing side of things. I digress, but with a small but very lovely discography like Periphery, and the fact they’ll be releasing their seventh album soon this year, I thought it’d be a perfect time to inspect my all time favorite from the band, and recently (from the time I am writing this) my favorite album of 2019, Periphery IV: Hail Stan.
What else can I say about this gem of an album? Well, for starters, I absolutely love the tracks on here. Each one, from the big winding epic of Reptile, to the bombastic CVRCH BVRNER, to the ethereally magnificent Satellites, each track on here just hypes me up in such a way that as the first minute of Reptile swells up, I am just instantly on board with this Periphery train of metal goodness. I think this album is where the band truly embrace their more modern ideologies within their djent music, as this contains a lot more electronic elements than ever before, taking a slight backseat on just their intense metalcore for more melodic structures, with classical hymns, ambient passages in a few moments, and even slight bits of brostep, all of which delivered like a fine wine in a fancy restaurant, though that same restaurant has a mosh pit in the middle. It is all a glorious fusion of different genres that makes Periphery even more adventurous sounding then they already are.
If we are talking about tracks, I’d say my all time favorite here is Crush. Such an enthralling piece of music that truly showcases all of the album’s main facets in a glorious way, showcasing heavy metal riffs with electronic beat music and a really cool little classical outro. It all just comes so well together that I am surprised that this album, or this band for that matter, isn’t on the same scale to many prog metal legends like Mastodon or Pain of Salvation to many people. While it isn't a long epic, nor is it an immensely intense track, I still think the band struck the most amount of lightning in a bottle for this song, and this album as a whole.
I think while the instrumentation is a fine wine, Spencer Sotelo’s vocals are like a chef’s kiss on the whole thing. Without them, it’d be a great instrumental album, but Spencer adds a certain spice to this soup that he increases to a progressive metal classic in my eyes. His entire presence in every song just works so well in every aspect, and he just gives it his all that, no matter what, I never felt he had any weak spots. Ever since the first album, his voice has aged even better with each release, and here he just melts into my veins that whenever I give this album a spin I will instantly get enthralled into it. Periphery as a whole is like a wine, they just get better with age.
This is an instant prog metal legend for me. It is an album that contains both complex riffs that break me up into bits, but also powerfully beautiful movements that I cannot help but feel a certain love in all my heart. I 100% recommend listening to this as this is essential in my eyes. It’s an album that sets a new bar to reach for any and all prog metal groups. Just incredible.

Joining The "Band" Wagon · Part 2
BAND THAT SURPRISED ME: Periphery ~
I'm thankful to have an amazing boyfriend with a similar taste in music as me. Whenever we go for drives in the car, usually to the supermarket, I occasionally let him take control of my car's aux cable, and he introduces me to new music and bands that I wouldn't have thought to listen to. This was the case with Periphery. I was instantly blown away, obsessed and surprised by Spencer Sotelo's incredible voice and how it's integrated into their music, especially their song "Scarlet". Goosebumps. Actual goosebumps.
BAND THAT CHANGED MY LIFE: Breaking Benjamin ~
The moment I discover something that I know is going to be life-changing to me is almost like a religious experience. I honestly don't really know how else to describe it, but I find myself having deep emotional connections with things that I hold close to my heart. For me, Breaking Benjamin and their music had that exact feeling and connection. I think it stemmed from my overwhelming love for the Halo franchise and Halo 2 in particular. I remember listening to the soundtrack and discovering Breaking Benjamin with "Blow Me Away", which it literally did. It's also hard to express how exactly they changed my life, but all of their songs really hit home in some way and their lyrics trigger nostalgia, as well as good and bad memories with people from the past. Breaking Benjamin really led me down the path of discovering all of the rock bands and music that I love today.
GUILTY PLEASURE: Nickelback ~
I'm so sorry, but I have to admit... Nickelback has some absolute flippin' bangers. I will happily blast out "Rockstar" at full volume and sing along to it at the top of my lungs (only when I'm home alone of course and the neighbours can judge me).
BAND I SHOULD HAVE SEEN BY NOW: Paramore ~
Oh, how I crave to see Paramore live. Being poor sucks and I'd love to experience more gigs and festivals in general, but especially a Paramore gig. I really like the different direction Paramore has taken over the recent years and I love their album "After Laughter". I also adore Hayley Williams so much and I'm actually really into her solo stuff right now! But, having said that, you just can't beat where it all started and feel like a little badass scene kid moshing to their music. I still do... just minus the ripped skinny jeans and coontails. In other words... 🎵WOAAAAAH, I NEVER MEANT TO BRAG!🎵
GREAT BAND TO SEE: P.O.D ~
Sadly I've only ever experienced two major gigs, the first being Ed Sheeran and the second of which, I was lucky enough to see Alien Ant Farm supporting P.O.D in Bristol a few years ago. I admit, I'd never really listened to much of P.O.D's music and only really went to see AAF, but of course, I love P.O.D's song "Boom" and "Alive" and was super excited to see them regardless - and since then, I've listened to more of their music. They're amazing live, very high energy, got the crowd going and involved and it was such an awesome night and a great experience.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my choices and give them a listen, if you haven't already. Let me know if you agree or disagree with me! Make sure to check out my Spotify playlist for this blog post, linked below.
Also! Please feel free to copy and paste and add in your own answers! Leave them as a comment below or share them to your own Facebook/Instagram and encourage others to add their bands (and maybe tag me @callmejelli_ so that I can have a read).

Actually y'know what? Fuck it. We're making this happen. Tumblr bandom for Periphery is going to happen. Back in 2020 when we all had to socially distance, the New Orleans drag and burlesque community did a series of Zoom shows called CYBER DISTANCING. And guess who had just had a number of burlesque shows canceled in 2020? Why none other than Dog Park Dissidents lead singer and Periphery stan Zac Xeper, who performed a DIGITAL BURLESQUE NUMBER to none other than A Black Minute by Periphery
vimeo
Cw: fake blood
Ok so here, enjoy the music of progressive metal band Periphery while Zac Xeper takes his clothes off and turns into a drag werewolf
We expect you all to turn in your creative writing assignment of Spencer Sotelo/Misha Mansoor Tumblr bandom fanfic by next week
Murderers! reminds me so much of my chemical romance’s bullets album — was wondering if that was an influence at all?
Sorta conceived of it as a mashup of The End from Black Parade and the Three Cheers B-side Desert Song with some muddling of A Black Minute by Periphery
BUT Romance Anónimo definitely inspired the classical Spanish guitar motif throughout and Bullets DID open with a cover of that, so in addition to the sense that Black Parade and Three Cheers are themselves influenced by Bullets, yes, our intro track was if the entire career of My Chemical Romance had an unholy demon baby with Periphery's Juggernaut (which is the PLOT of Juggernaut we'll have you know)
