Sweater Vests and Black Lace: A Spencer Reid Fic. Chapter Two
Here it is. I meant to have this done days ago, but life happened. adorable beans are adorable on their first date
Rose Walsh could admit she felt lost as she stared into her open closet. She felt completely hopeless as she struggled to decide what exactly wear. Getting dressed had never been so difficult before.
Every combination of clothing within her closet just felt wrong at the moment. It wasn’t a feeling she was accustomed to, being so lost when it came to putting together an outfit she felt pretty and confident in. She’d spent years building up her closet with items she adored. She usually had no problem putting an outfit together and pulling it off.
A little voice in the back of her brain quickly pointed out that her current dilemma in picking out an outfit had less to do with having nothing to wear and more to do with the man she was dressing for.
She’d be lying if she tried to pretend that she’d been as cool as cucumber in the days leading up to her date with Dr. Spencer Reid. She’d been quite the opposite actually, on the inside at least.
Rose honestly felt completely lost as she prepared for tonight. She had managed to do her make up at least. She’d decided to forgo the black lipstick choosing instead to go with a deep crimson red. She’d straightened her hair placing a plain velvet headband on, deciding that keeping things simple was ideal. She’d even picked out jewelry that looked perfect for tonight. Four plain silver studs in her ears and a cameo necklace featuring a raven. The necklace was her own design, and it seemed like it’d be perfect for the puppet show Reid was taking her to see.
Rose could admit she was impressed with Reid’s invitation to this fall festival...she’d maybe googled it in the week leading up to the date and she couldn’t help but to look forward to it. It seemed to be more of a carnival than a festival given the Ferris wheel and the few other amusement rides along with the corn maze and the pumpkin patch...it was absolutely something she was sure she’d enjoy.
She was impressed that he’d picked something based off her interests...especially given that he’d been capable of figuring out what her interests might be in less than the hour he’d spent in her apartment.
She wasn’t accustomed to guys putting that kind of effort into a first date. It was kind of sweet to be honest, the fact that he’d picked something so in tune to what she would enjoy. It seemed to match what she’d figured out about Dr. Spencer Reid from the very limited interaction they’d had thus far....he was a sweetheart...most of her dates weren’t sweet.
Most of her first dates involved a bar or if she happened to be dating a wanna be rock star she’d have to put up with sitting around watching her date’s band practice...which was always horribly dull. There was nothing more painful than listening to some guy who thought he was the next Peter Steele...by the time those nights were over she felt like she needed a good drill to the eardrums.
Reid seemed like such a nice guy....She wasn’t accustomed to dating nice guys. To tell the truth most of her ex boyfriends had kind of sucked. They’d been actually pretty awful. She’d dated a lot of jerks; drunk and high guys in rock bands, arrogant goth boys, guys who tended to think of her as more of a cool accessory to have on their arm than an actual person with thoughts, feelings, and opinions beyond the whole goth aesthetic.
She could distinctly remember having a guy she’d dated with all seriousness unironically refer to her as a “big titty goth girlfriend”...needless to say she’d kicked that guy to the curb but not before she had chewed that guy out using more curse words than he’d probably ever heard in his lifetime.
Rose hated to admit that given her experience with first dates so far she’d begun to think that perhaps nice guys were either a rarity or they just flat out didn’t exist. She’d begun to think that perhaps her father had been wrong all along all those times he’d told her bedtime stories telling her she’d find a prince someday.
To be honest she had never had good luck with boyfriends or first dates...the guys she attracted didn’t tend to be the most thoughtful. They definitely weren’t princes by any stretch of the imagination.
She had plenty of nightmare first dates over the years. There had been the goth guy who had wanted to recite poetry to her in a cemetery...sure it was a creative idea...and she did appreciate the aesthetic of a good cemetery. She liked poetry well enough, but the poetry her date had recited had been melodramatic and honestly cringy. It had been uncomfortable and awkward being sat down to listen to him read from a little book he’d pulled from his jacket pocket. He had been a bit too into listening to himself drone on...he’d definitely been far more into himself than her. Needless to say she’d escaped that date rather quickly pretending she had a family emergency she had to attend to.
Then there had been the guy who had seemed perfectly normal if not a bit moody. She still cringed remembering how moody guy had surprised her by taking her to an S&M club on their first date...that date had ended quicker than she could say the word “latex and whips.” That had been a nightmare, she had no idea why the guy had assumed she’d be into that scene...yeah she did own a collar but that was more for aesthetic than any submissive play....yes, sure a little rough play could be fun, but calling some dude Daddy just gave her the creeps. The closeness she’d had to her own late father, just made that title seem so unsexy. It honestly made her feel sick to relate that word to anything even remotely sexual.
Besides even if she was looking to be kinky, she wasn’t the type to take a guy to bed on the first date.
Then there was the guy in the band who had been a bit too reckless and not to mention drunk to put up with. He’d gotten totally wasted and then had gotten pissed off on their first date. Honestly a night spent dragging her date from getting into a few fist fights had been exhausting. She’d dropped that guy pretty quick and he hadn’t seemed to care given that she wasn’t willing to babysit him while he was intoxicated.
The only nice guy she’d gone out with had turned out to just not quite be over his ex...Rose and he had at least still maintained a friendship, but it wasn’t exactly an ideal situation.
So, needless to say she wasn’t accustomed to a guy putting so much thought into a first date...Reid was definitely an outlier as far as her dates went.
He seemed so genuine, that was the best word she could think to describe him. He was a genuinely sweet guy. Not to mention she found it pretty adorable that he seemed so flustered by her.
She hated to admit that these facts made her anxious. She wasn’t use to guys being so nervous around her or just being so genuinely kind to her. Reid’s behavior towards her made it hard to pretend she felt confident around him.
It was easy to pretend to be confident among most people. She was able to put on an act and pretend she was so laid back and aloof.
Reid wasn’t easy to put up an act around.
Rose felt more nervous about tonight than she wanted to admit. She felt so remarkably uncool at the moment.
She was usually able to pretend that she felt relaxed and at ease. She was able to use her appearance as an armor of sorts. Rose knew that her appearance worked in her favor. People assumed she was the mysterious intense quiet type...when in reality she felt awkward and lost.
She knew people might take one look at the way she chose to dress and would assume that she was filled to the brim with confidence. The truth couldn’t be further from this assumption though. To tell the truth she was an awkward dork. She was horribly awkward around most people, she was just really really good at hiding it. She was an absolute dork who just so happened to realize that her aesthetic could work to cover up all the nerdiness.
One date with Reid was somehow undoing all the work she’d done to pretend that she was nothing but cool.
She might have maintained a sense of cool around Reid so far, but the closer their date neared the more anxious she felt.
It wasn’t every single day that a nice guy with a doctorate asked her on a date...not to mention a nice doctor who just so happened to do something within the FBI.
Her past romantic partners weren’t anywhere near as ambitious nor were they as successful as Reid...they also weren’t sweethearts who blushed and turned into flustered messes just from one look from her.
Reid seemed so unlike any guy she’d ever attracted. She almost couldn’t believe he was attracted to her. A cruel little voice in the back of her brain told her that soon enough he’d realize that she wasn’t even his type.
He seemed like he should be taking some librarian out or maybe one of his coworkers...someone who did something more meaningful than work in a bar and make jewelry.
Reid seemed so soft...kind of a giant nerd honestly...He seemed to be sort of sophisticated, it was his clothing Rose thought. He was so prim and proper, he dressed like a gentleman. He dressed like a true academic. He was just so different from the guys who usually showed her interest.
Shouldn’t Reid be dating some soft little blonde thing? Shouldn’t he be dating some nice polite Pollyanna type of girl who wore pastels and hung out in libraries.
Why was he interested in a girl who had dyed her hair black for so long now, that she wasn’t sure if her blonde could ever make a return. She hadn’t worn a pastel since she was ten. She spent her nights pouring drinks. She wasn’t Pollyanna. She wasn’t the blonde bombshell she pictured Reid being interested in. She was more Elvira and Morticia Adams than Pollyanna or Marilyn Monroe.
She took a deep breath telling herself not to be so insecure. Reid seemed to like her exactly as she was...He didn’t seem to be put off by her taxidermy collection or her black lipstick. He seemed genuinely interested in her. So, it did her no good to sit around and think about all the other girls he could be taking out. He was taking her out.
She let out a heavy sigh running her fingers along the variety of dark fabrics within her closet. There had to be something in here that would work.
She was tempted to just go with that bustle skirt she loved, it was one of her favorites after all...but she wasn’t sure this was exactly fall festival friendly. She did own a few pairs of jeans...black of course, but wearing jeans made her feel like she wasn’t really putting an effort into this date.
Rose felt a small smile cross her lips as she ran her fingers along a dress that just might work well with one of her favorite corsets. The dress was certainly casual enough for a festival and it was dressy enough to look as though she’d put an effort into her look. The dress was a black knee-length thing with quarter length lace sleeves. She could wear the corset over it, it only being an under-bust corset. She’d worn it over dresses before. She was sure she could wear it with some black tights and a pair of plain flat black mary janes.
She could distinctly remember the reaction she’d worked out of Dr. Reid the few times he’d spotted her around the apartment in one of her corsets. She was sure she’d never seen someone blush more.
She did love a good corset, and it did make her figure look pretty amazing. She loved corsets even if she had to put up with emails from her mother containing warnings about just how much “damage” she was doing to her body with the corsets...never mind she didn’t lace them that tight.
Yes, a good corset and this dress would be perfect. Making Reid flustered would definitely work towards erasing some of her own anxieties.
….............................................................................
Reid had found himself pacing his apartment through out most of the day. He’d woken up early this morning his heart slamming in his chest a nervous energy bustling through him as it hit him just what was happening tonight.
He’d be lying if he tried to pretend that he hadn’t been a nervous wreck all week long. Not going to work had made it all too easy for him to focus on his anxiety. He’d done his best to keep himself busy, reading all his favorite novels and then going to the book store to buy more novels. He’d spent plenty of time at the park playing chess. He’d spent plenty of time at his favorite coffee shop enjoying a pastry with his coffee.
None of these activities kept his mind off his upcoming date though, nor did they help distract him from his worries.
Reid could admit he had spent all week long trying to mentally prep himself for tonight. He’d gone over a million different scenarios in his head of how tonight just might go. It would either be the best night he’d ever dreamed of experiencing, or it would be an absolute failure.
His brain unfortunately seemed to focus on how all the ways he could make tonight the latter.
His brain had cooked up at least a dozen different awful ways he could ruin this date.
He could choke on a candied apple and pass out. He could eat bad carnival food and wind up puking. He could let Rose drag him on some ride that moved far too fast for him and then he’d wind up puking on her. He could say something really stupid and completely offend Rose. He could throw out some statistic that would paint him as an absolute freak that Rose never wanted to see again. He could trip and fall flat on his face dragging her down with him. He could move to kiss her only to wind up somehow blinding her...he wasn’t sure how that scenario would play out...but if there was a will there was a way.
There were so many ways he could screw tonight up. His brain threw one horrible scenario at him after another each scenario getting progressively more ridiculous and unlikely.
He had tried to keep his cool and remind himself that he was working himself up, he couldn’t help it though.
He’d only had one date so far, and it had been horrible. If anything this festival with Rose was more of a first date than what he’d experienced with JJ.
It had been less than a month since he’d taken JJ to that football game. That football game had been an absolute miserable embarrassing failure. JJ hadn’t even realized it was meant to be a date...she’d invited Garcia along after all...turning the would be date into a friendly hangout.
JJ had tried to apologize to Reid of course once it hit her that he meant the football game to be a date, but he’d brushed off her apologies not wanting to make things feel even more awful and awkward. He’d tried to reassure JJ that there were no hard feelings, and that things were still friendly between them. He’d tried to reassure that he still considered her to be a dear friend. He’d tried his best to reassure her that he wasn’t upset or disappointed.
It had been a terrible experience, but Reid was too good of a person to be bitter over it. He didn’t blame JJ for misunderstanding the entire situation. He wasn’t some jerk that was going to hold some grudge over what an absolute disaster that night had been.
Reid didn’t want to ruin any friendship he’d developed with JJ over a messy misunderstanding or any hurt feelings. That night had at least shown him that JJ and he were meant to just be friends.
If Reid had to be honest when Gideon had first talked him into taking JJ to that football game Reid had hoped that non-date he’d had with JJ would work towards knocking the crush he’d developed on his odd neighbor from his brain...after all he’d been harboring a crush on JJ for a few years before Rose Walsh had entered his life...JJ was the girl he’d secretly admired all these years...he’d been delighted to finally have a date with her.
JJ was the kind of girl he would have crushed on in high school. She was the kind of girl who he would always consider so unattainable.
He had told himself a date with JJ was a dream come true. It was a perfect opportunity to help him move past the silly crush he’d developed on his next door neighbor.
It had failed of course (both the date and the attempt to knock Rose from his mind)...the dream date he’d thought he’d have with JJ was a disaster. Deep down inside there had been a voice in the back of his brain telling him that of course it was a disaster...he wasn’t taking out the girl he’d much rather be out with at that moment.
He felt guilty for feeling that way. He didn’t want to feel as though he was using JJ to forget Rose...but in reality he’d been doing just that.
Reid had hated to admit as the game had worn on he’d much rather be sitting with Rose Walsh.
He didn’t think Rose Walsh would enjoy a football game though...he actually couldn’t imagine her anywhere near a football game.
He couldn’t really picture himself watching another one either to be honest. He’d spent the entire game a little lost...he’d not had the best experience surrounding the sport given most of his childhood bullies had been avid jocks who played football in their spare time. That had been enough to make Reid shy away from the sport.
By the end of that game Reid had realized he and JJ weren’t meant to be. The date had been a failure. It had been a sign that JJ and he weren’t meant to be.
Reid had realized though that he’d much rather keep JJ as a friend than let a disastrous night push her from him forever. He still cared about her. Part of him still had that admiration for her...but as it turns out his heart wanted someone who was so different from JJ.
Reid could admit though, deep down inside he feared that his night with Rose would just be a repeat of what had happened with JJ. He told himself that he was being paranoid. He’d made it pretty clear he considered tonight to be a date when he’d asked Rose to join him.
That didn’t stop Reid from feeling so totally lost though. He could admit he’d debated asking for advice...just like he’d done before that date with JJ. Reid knew he could always call up Gideon or Hotch and ask for some advice.
He wasn’t sure that Rose Walsh was like any girl Hotch or Gideon had ever taken out on a date before.
Besides Reid didn’t want to explain that he was in fact taking his neighbor on a date this soon after the mess of a non-date he’d had with JJ. He couldn’t imagine how awkward that would be, especially if tonight turned out to be a disaster.
He could also admit that the thought of asking Morgan for advice had popped into his brain. Reid was sure that that would only turn out horribly though.
Any advice Morgan would give Reid would probably just result in Rose never speaking to him again...after all wasn’t Morgan the ladies man of the BAU. Reid was sure Morgan preferred one night stands to romantic first dates at the fall festival.
So, Reid had quickly decided it was best to go in this without any advice from outside sources.
He told himself that the best advice he could follow would be to just be himself. If Rose didn’t like him when he was himself, then it wasn’t meant to be.
Reid had taken extra care getting ready for this date. He’d taken his time in the shower and had taken his time shaving and even applying an aftershave and a cologne he so rarely wore. It had been a birthday gift from his Aunt Ethel. Reid wasn’t really a big wearer of cologne but he’d not had the heart to tell his aunt that news. He of course had worried that he’d put on too much cologne but had resisted the urge to take soap and scrub some of it off.
Getting dressed had been a bigger ordeal than Reid wanted to admit to. He had found himself staring into his closet for what felt like hours before he’d finally forced himself to settle on an outfit. It was something he’d usually wear to work, brown slacks with a pale long sleeved plaid shirt, one of his favorite ties, and a gray sweater vest...at the end he’d worried that he was overdressed but by the time the thought had entered his mind it was too late to change.
The next ordeal had been the debate over whether he should buy flowers for Rose or not. Roses seemed like the ideal choice, but what if roses were too cliché? She didn’t seem like the kind of girl who would be that impressed with a dozen red roses. He’d debated getting her a single rose, maybe one dyed black...if floral shops did that, he was sure they did...that did seem like something she’d be into...but what if she hated it?
What if she thought roses were some kind of lame play on her first name? If not roses then what though?
He’d felt like an utter moron when he’d realized that the perfect flower had been staring at him the entire time. He’d allowed his mind to drift back to the tattoo on her arm as the answer had hit him...chrysanthemums. A little bouquet of chrysanthemums was the perfect choice.
That was how Reid had found himself standing in front of Rose’s closed apartment door a small bouquet of white and red chrysanthemums in hand his heart slamming in his chest so quickly that he was almost surprised it hadn’t popped out of his chest.
He took a few deep breaths trying to work up his nerve to knock.
He stared down at the flowers praying he’d chosen well. He could admit he’d done his research the night he’d first seen the tattoo on her arm.
He couldn’t help but to want to research it...it was that thirst he had for knowledge.
Reid hadn’t been shocked to find that chrysanthemums actually were considered to symbolize death in some countries. In some countries in Europe chrysanthemums were only used for funerals. In Poland chrysanthemums were placed on the graves of the dead for All Saints day. It made sense for Rose to pick something that had a tie to funeral traditions...she seemed to be interested in that kind of thing judging by some of the books he’d seen at her apartment.
The little florist at the shop he’d bought the bouquet in had told him that white chrysanthemums symbolized honesty and loyalty and that red symbolized a deep passion. He wasn’t quite sure he believed it, and the mention of passion had made his cheeks flush...but Reid still let the florist talk him into adding a few red flowers into the mix.
Reid wasn’t sure what a tattoo of a chrysanthemum was supposed to symbolize though...he guessed that was up to the person who had the tattoo...he wasn’t sure Rose would appreciate him asking her what it symbolized.
He took a deep breath knowing he was stalling. He forced himself to reach up using his fist to give the door a few rapid loud knocks his heart still slamming so fast in his chest.
His heartbeat didn’t slow down as the door opened to reveal her. Rose managed to shoot him a small smile hoping her own anxiety wasn’t written all over her face.
Reid took her in his pulse racing as he spotted what she was wearing. The corset she’d laced over her dress definitely made her figure all the more apparent and it definitely helped make the hint of cleavage her dress showed off far more visible. He swallowed a lump developing in the base of his throat at the sight.
He could remember that first corset he’d spotted her wearing months ago. The reaction it brought out him was the exact same reaction he was experiencing now. He found himself hyper focusing on Rose’s forehead doing all he could to avoid leering at her body.
Reid managed to return the smile she was shooting him knowing he was stuttering over his own words. “I-I,I’m a little early. If you aren’t ready to go, I-I can wait.”
Reid resisted the urge to bury his head in his hands as it hit him that he’d lost the ability to barely even make a coherent sentence. Three PhDs and the sight of her in a corset made him feel like he’d barely finished first grade.
Rose let a small chuckle leave her lips the clear anxiety seeping out of Reid putting her at ease. At least she wasn’t as freaked out as him. It was easier to feel confident around him when he was flustered.
She tried not to smirk eyeing the way he was doing everything he could to avoid staring at her breasts. Score one for the corset.
She spoke thankful she was able to sound far more confident than she felt. “I’m almost ready to go. Just let me grab my coat. Come on in.”
Reid walked into her apartment his palms sweating as she closed the door behind them. She spoke nodding down at the flowers still in his hand not helping but to tease him just the slightest. “Are those for me, or are you just going to carry them all night?”
Reid felt his cheeks flush as he held the bouquet out to her his voice a bit frantic. “I wasn’t sure if you’d like them, but I thought it was a safe bet...given your tattoo and all.”
“It’s a very safe bet. They’re my favorite flower. Thank you, they’re beautiful.” She remarked trying not to chuckle as she noticed that his cheeks flushed all the darker when her hand brushed against his taking the bouquet.
She had to wonder how many times she could make him blush in one night as she watched him squeak out a “you’re welcome.”
Reid took her by surprise staring down at her hands a small frown crossing his features as he noticed that her previous longer nails were now much shorter. “You cut your nails.”
Rose raised an eyebrow surprised that he’d noticed such a minor detail. She let out a small chuckle nodding her head as she explained. “Yeah, I was wearing acrylics before...a friend talked me into them...I only wear them sometimes. They make my life a bit too complicated to wear them for too long though. They really aren’t good for your nails to be honest. So I usually find it easier to keep them on the short side.”
Reid nodded his head the words sliding out of him before he could stop himself. “That’s true...I actually read a health study from Rutgers University that showed that out of the ninety people who were surveyed 52% had experienced fungal infections after visiting nail salons only three times over the course of a year. Tools that aren’t properly cleaned and sanitized can actually lead to exposure to bacteria, fungus, and infections...even Hepatitis B and C.”
He resisted the urge to slam his palm against his face as soon as the words left him...charming bring up fungus and Hepatitis in response to her seemingly innocent comment about her nails.
Rose raised her eyebrow once again a bit taken back by the information dump. Okay, so Dr. Reid was a smart cookie...an odd cookie, but smart none the less.
She couldn’t help but to feel bad for him. The poor guy looked as though he wanted to sink through the floorboards and disappear at the moment.
She gave him a soft smile trying to at least hint that she wasn’t completely grossed out by the information. “Huh, guess it’s a good thing I don’t get the acrylics too often then.”
She spoke again over her shoulder as she headed to the kitchen with the bouquet. “Let me put these in some water and pop on my coat, I’ll just have to grab my purse and then I’ll be ready.”
“Take your time.” Reid blurted out watching her disappear his stomach in knots. She hadn’t run screaming yet...that was a good sign.
His eyes turned down to her cat Bela having taken notice that his new friend had returned to the apartment.
Reid allowed himself to kneel down his hand running along the cat’s back working deep purrs from him. He let himself get lost in how soft Bela’s fur felt the soft strokes calming his racing heart and his twisted gut.
The sense of calm didn’t last long as Reid’s eyes caught sight of her approaching. He stood up knowing his cheeks were flushing as he took in sight of her.
He shifted back in forth doing his best to not throw anymore statistics at her as he spoke. “You look beautiful.”
Rose gave him a soft smile hating to admit that she could feel her own cheeks threatening to flush. Most of her date’s didn’t throw that compliment at her. In fact she could admit that most of her dates didn’t stare at her the way Reid was looking at her right now. Yes there was definitely a hint of lust in his eyes as he let himself occasionally glance down at her cleavage, but there was also a look of awe, as though he was staring at artwork. He was staring at her as though she was made of rubies and pearls.
“Thanks. You don’t look so bad yourself Spencer.” She remarked trying to keep that cool carefree persona she was so accustomed to presenting to everyone.
Rose gave him a soft smile reaching out and running her fingers along the purple scarf he’d draped over his brown coat. She nodded down at it as she spoke “We match.”
Reid furrowed his brow it taking him a moment to realize what she’d meant. The purple velvet coat she wore was the same shade of purple as his scarf. He spoke feeling so unintelligent. “We do.”
Rose apparently didn’t mind his lack of intelligent input as she linked her arm with his fast to speak. “I guess we should get going then.”
…....................................................
Reid did his best to keep his eyes on the puppet show though it was hard to focus when he was sitting this close to Rose. There had been no place to sit but on benches that had been set out around the little theater box where the puppet show was taking place.
How was Reid supposed to focus on the rendition of the Raven taking place in front of him when all he could focus on was the smell of her perfume?
She was wearing something different this time around, something new, something spicy that had a hint of violets underneath it there might be a hint of plum there as well. He’d have to be closer to pick up on the latter part of the scent though. The smell seemingly overtook his senses it being far more interesting to focus on than the little Edgar Allan Poe puppet interacting with the raven puppet on the stage in front of him.
At least Rose didn’t seem to be too focused on the fact that he was barely paying attention to the show. He was pleased to see that she seemed enthralled with the puppets.
Reid barely noticed as the puppet show ended his busy brain still trying to detect just what the final part of the scent profile he was picking up off her perfume.
He only noticed that the show had come to an end as Rose moved away from his standing up glancing down at him an amused look in her eyes.
Reid stood up rather quickly hoping it wasn’t obvious he’d been miles away. He spoke swallowing a lump developing in the back of his throat. “Are you hungry?”
“Starved.” Rose replied linking her arm with his once again the action making Reid’s cheeks flush ever so slightly.
He sighed hoping he’d eventually stop having that reaction, unknowing that Rose had to hope he’d keep having that reaction.
Rose raised an eyebrow as he led her to yet another stand that was selling sweet snacks. She’d definitely noticed that Reid seemed to eat more sugar than any human being probably should. She had to wonder how he was so thin when it seemed as though he sucked down sugary treats without a second thought. He must be blessed with a fast metabolism.
She spoke unable to stave off her curiosity as Reid and she walked through the festival grounds Reid and she both snacking on sweet cinnamon cake doughnuts and apple cider. “So what exactly do you do for the FBI?”
“How’d you know I worked for the FBI?” Reid blurted out searching his busy brain trying to figure out if and when he’d ever mentioned his career.
Rose gave him a small grin not helping but to joke. “Maybe I’m a psychic...or I just spotted your ID badge while sharing an elevator with you one day.”
Reid raised an eyebrow tempted to point out to her that the likelihood of someone actually having psychic abilities was highly debatable. He held it in though quickly realizing she was most likely just joking.
Besides didn’t she have a framed drawing of an Ouija board in her apartment. He was sure he’d even spotted a book on palm reading in her bookshelf back at her apartment...she might believe in that kind of thing. It was a realization he was torn about. He was a man of science after all...but then again he did love a good ghost story. He was at least willing to entertain the thought of spiritualism even if deep down he did believe it was most likely bullshit.
He took a deep breath pulling his brain from thoughts of ghosts and psychics realizing he hadn’t answered her question about his job. He was unsure of how she’d react to his career. “I work for the BAU...uh the Behavioral Analysis Unit.”
He paused resisting the urge to go into the entirety of the history of the BAU. The last time he’d done that his audience had been less than impressed.
He took another deep breath as he spoke again. “To put it simply I’m a profiler. I use a mix of psychology and criminology to find people...mostly I use the study of human behavior to help the police find people....as in uh...well people who commit crimes.”
Rose nodded her head getting the hint that he was trying to sugar coat it for her. It was a sweet gesture, but she wasn’t a delicate flower who was going to faint at the mere mention of murder. “People who commit crimes as in serial killers I’m guessing?”
Reid cleared his throat taking a big swig of apple cider as he spoke. “Yes...and uh a couple of other crimes, arsonists, serial rapists, and so on. Usually if a police department needs help they send a case file to our liaison and if she feels that the case needs federal involvement, then we’re called in.”
Rose was surprised that the words left her lips it being a subject she so rarely broached with people, even those who she considered herself close to. “I have some very vague idea of what you do...I’m sort of familiar with some aspects of law enforcement. My father was a cop. I don’t think any cases like what you’re accustomed to dealing with fell on his desk...but I was a kid when he was on the force, so if they did, I probably wasn’t told about it.”
“What’s he do now, is he retired?” Reid asked relieved that at least she didn’t seem to be totally creeped out about the details surrounding his job.
He cringed once again having the desire to disappear as Rose cleared her throat a small frown crossing her features. “He died when I was thirteen...he was killed on the job..shoot out with some drunk asshole who was beating his wife. My dad and his partner were called in and the bastard shot my dad on the spot...guess he wanted to go out in a hail of bullets.”
“I’m sorry.” Reid blurted out unsure of what else he could say, now he’d gone and done it.
His anxiety was quickly quelled as Rose spoke shrugging her shoulders slightly. “It’s okay. You didn’t know.”
She spoke again clearing her throat trying not to focus on her father’s death too much. She was a grown woman and his death had been a decade ago, but it still felt fresh. She wasn’t sure it’d ever stop feeling fresh. “My family is pretty boring aside from my cop father. My mother is a teacher...kindergarten. My sister is a teacher as well...or well she’s planning on being one, once she’s finished up with college...we’re total opposites my mother and sister and I. They’re the blonde homecoming queen types...They still haven’t been able to get over me dyeing my hair.”
“What’s your natural hair color?” Reid dared to ask not helping but to be curious as he gazed at her black hair. He’d wondered if it was her natural hair color, it seemed almost too perfect to be natural.
Rose chuckled not helping but to give his shoulder a playful nudge the action making Reid smile. “Don’t you know it’s impolite to ask a lady her natural hair color?”
She spoke again deciding she might as well admit it. “I’m blonde...but I haven’t been blonde since I was about fifteen. I let a friend dye it for me and my mother lost it when she found out...She actually made me use color corrector from the local supermarket, but lucky for me the black was a little too strong to get rid of. I’ve stuck with black for a while now. I don’t imagine I’ll ever go back to my natural hair color...it’d be too much of a pain to get rid of the black even if I wanted to.”
Reid nodded his head not helping but to be curious. “How long have you been working as a bartender...that’s what you said you do, right?”
Rose let out a small sigh hating that her job wasn’t that impressive. “For about two years now. I work at the Chapel...it’s a goth club...pretty boring to be honest. I mean the appeal of drunk people and loud music kind of loses it’s appeal within a week of tending the bar. I went to school for art, but I dropped out.”
She cringed wishing she didn’t share the final part of that story. She wasn’t sure the guy with the doctorate would be too impressed with an art school dropout.
She was surprised as Reid spoke giving her a small nervous smile. “You still make art though...I mean with the jewelry.”
Rose felt a small smile cross her lips not exactly accustomed to people seeing her jewelry as art instead of a hobby. “I guess that’s true.”
She spoke again before he had time to ask her more about her mother, she wasn’t exactly into getting into her Mommy issues at the moment. “Anyway, I’m from a very small coal mining town in Kentucky that I bet you’ve never even heard of...I didn’t quite fit in back home.”
Reid tilted his head to the side as he took in this information. He took a bit of his doughnut unable to stop himself from saying it. “You don’t have an accent.”
Rose chuckled ever so slightly at this comment. “Yes I do, trust me. It’s faded a bit, but it still comes out on occasion. Just ya know...warning you it might come out. Just don’t call me a Southern Belle and we’ll be good.”
Rose didn’t give Reid the opportunity to respond to this comment as she took him by hand leading him in direction to the Ferris Wheel. “Come on, I do think the Ferris Wheel is calling my name.”
Reid would have turned down the chance to ride it to be honest, if he was alone. He found himself staring down at Rose’s delicate hand holding his and he found himself unable to stop himself from nodding his head. “Okay.”
He had a feeling he’d agree to just about anything right now as long as she kept holding his hand.
The line to the Ferris Wheel was long enough that Reid and Rose finished their snacks thankfully managing to toss their trash in the garbage without losing their spot in line.
Reid had failed to realize of course that being sat in a Ferris Wheel car with Rose only meant that he’d be pressed quite close to her. He wasn’t complaining about the closeness, but he couldn’t ignore the way it made his heart flutter or the way the scent of her perfume enveloped him again.
Rose took notice of his flustered expression not helping but to tease him as she spoke. “You aren’t afraid of heights right? Because if you are you probably should have told me before I drug you over here.”
“Nope, not afraid of heights.” Reid blurted out deciding not to mention that he wasn’t fond of the dark. He wasn’t sure mentioning that he was afraid of the dark at twenty four years old was the most alluring fact to share with a woman who was still holding his hand.
He spoke again unable to stop himself from speaking. “Actually did you know that the top phobia people list having is the fear of flying or Pteromerhanopbia. Right after that is the fear of enclosed spaces, the fear of insects, and the fear of snakes.”
Rose felt a small smile cross her lips once again a bit taken back by Reid’s knowledge. She spoke unable to stop herself from asking. “I’m guessing you know that information thanks to that fancy doctorate you have?”
Reid cleared his throat hoping he wasn’t about to expose himself as being a total freak. “I have three pHds actually....in Mathematics, Engineering, and Chemistry.”
Rose widened her eyes taking in this information, that wasn’t what she’d been expecting to hear. She cleared her throat unable to stop herself from voicing the thought out loud. “I guess you really are a smart cookie.”
Reid felt his cheeks flush shrugging his shoulders as he addressed this comment. “I don’t really think that intelligence can be accurately quantified...I uh, I have an IQ of 187 and an eidetic memory...and I can read 20,000 words per minute.”
Rose resisted the urge to widen her eyes even more sure that they might pop out of her head if she did so. She spoke a small nervous chuckle leaving her. “So, yep...definitely a smart cookie.”
She spoke again not helping but to be curious. “So, you’re like twenty something right? So...you must have zoomed through those doctorates to have three of them.”
“I’m twenty four...I uh, I was in high school by twelve and I started college at fourteen.” Reid admitted having to admit he always hated having this conversation.
It felt too much like he was bragging about his accomplishments. He wasn’t the type to brag. He wasn’t just lying when he said that he didn’t think intelligence could be accurately determined. People were intelligent in different ways. Some people excelled where he failed.
He was surprised as Rose spoke nodding her head slowly saying the last thing he’d expected to hear. “That’s impressive...but it sounds...lonely.”
She paused mentally kicking herself for stating this. She didn’t want to sound as though she was pitying him. She spoke again trying to clear up her statement. “I mean...you were so young...college is a hard enough adjustment on it’s own. I can’t imagine attending college at fourteen...when I was fourteen I still slept with a teddy bear...so I can imagine it was difficult to ya know...function in that environment.
Reid gave her a soft smile a sense of fondness for her and her concern for a younger version of him hitting him hard. “It was.”
She cleared her throat hoping she was moving on to less awkward conversation. “So, are you from here originally?”
Reid shook his head a small sigh leaving his lips. He knew this would come up eventually. She’d shared details of her childhood with him...he guessed he should share his. “I’m from Vegas.”
He paused hoping that the next words that left his mouth didn’t totally wreck this date, especially when he was stuck in a slowly moving Ferris Wheel unable to escape any discomfort. “My mom still lives there...Uh, that mail of mine you get sometimes...Bennington Sanitarium. She’s been hospitalized there since I was eighteen. She has paranoid schizophrenia. It’s for the best that she’s institutionalized...she can get the help she needs there. I took care of her up until that point...my dad, he uh, well he left...couldn’t deal with her illness and...I don’t know, I guess maybe he was disappointed in how I was or..I don’t know. But, yeah he left when I was about ten. I did what I could for her...but it was rough.”
Rose furrowed her brow at this information and the way Reid was avoiding her glance staring straight ahead a the skyline in front of them as their Ferris wheel car neared the top of the wheel.
Crap, now she’d gone and done it.
She gave his hand a small squeeze struggling to find the words to fix any heartache she may have brought out in him forcing him to admit this all to her. “I’m really sorry Spencer...that, that does sound really rough.”
Reid returned the squeeze to her hand forcing himself to turn to face her hating to see the look of guilt in her eyes. He found himself parroting the very words she’d thrown at him. “It’s okay...you didn’t know.”
He cleared his throat as he spoke again. “I actually write her a letter just about every day...it makes up for me not being able to visit her as often as I should...or at least that’s what I tell myself.”
“I’m sure it helps...I mean she must understand why you’re not around as much as you’d like to be...I’m sure she’s proud of you, with all you’ve accomplished.” Rose tried to reassure him Reid giving her a soft smile though he honestly didn’t quite buy into her statement, it was nice to hear.
He took a deep breath deciding to just come out and say it. “Thanks...you know, for not running from me.”
“Why would I run from you?” Rose blurted out tilting her head to the side a bit thrown off by this statement.
Reid shrugged his shoulders a heavy sigh leaving him. “I figured you’d run once you realized I’m...you know...not normal.”
Rose took him by surprise leaning in and pressing a kiss to his cheek as she spoke. “Normal is pretty overrated Spencer.”
Reid felt his cheeks flush darker than they had all evening as he took in her statement. He turned his head facing her the words sliding from him. “I guess that’s true.”
They stared at one another neither noticing that their Ferris wheel car had finally reached the top of the wheel.
Reid felt his pulse race as Rose did the one thing she so rarely found herself ever having the desire to do on a first date. She leaned in closer to him her lips brushing against his so lightly just barely testing the waters.
Reid felt his cheeks flush all the more feeling a bit clueless as what to do as he felt his lips against hers. He’d never really been kissed before, aside from an older girl who had given him a pity kiss back when he’d been a sixteen year old in college and she’d realized he’d never been kissed before.
This was definitely no pity kiss.
Reid closed his eyes deciding his best bet was just to go with what felt right. He placed a hand against her cheek hoping his palms weren’t too sweaty as he moved his lips against hers the best he could hoping he wasn’t just being a drooling awkward mess.
Rose managed to dominate the kiss gently coaxing his mouth open Reid getting the hint as her tongue slid across his. He couldn’t stop the moan from leaving him as he enthusiastically allowed his tongue to slide against hers the kiss growing more intense. Her lips were so soft against his, so perfect. He felt a sense of pride shoot through him as he worked a soft moan form her lips.
Rose placed her own hand against his cheek the kisses taking her breath away. She wasn’t sure she’d ever been kissed like this before. He tasted so sweet, it had to be all the sugar he ate...or maybe he just had such a sweet personality that he had to taste sweet.
Neither wanted the kiss to end but the need for oxygen out ruled the desire to continue Reid and Rose’s lips parting Reid and she daring to open their eyes staring at one another their cheeks both flushed from more than any anxiety.
Rose couldn’t stop the small laugh from leaving her as she noticed a trace of her crimson lipstick staining Reid’s lips. She used her thumb gently wiping it from him Reid allowing a laugh to leave him as well as she held a thumb up showing the evidence of their kiss.
He felt the words leave him a bit surprised by the confidence he felt as the comment left him. “I wonder if the black lipstick will do that.”
Rose chuckled at this shaking her head slightly not helping but to tease him. “Bold of you to assume there’s more kisses in your future.”
Reid felt the smile cross his lips recalling her joke earlier. “You did say you might be psychic...so do you see any in my future?”
Rose smiled at this comment a bit amused he remembered the comment. She pressed another kiss to his cheek as she spoke. “Perhaps...I may see another one happening tonight...ya know...if you ride this Ferris Wheel with me one more time.”
Reid worked up the nerve to wrap an arm around her shoulders working up the nerve to pull her a little closer to him as he spoke. “I can make that happen.”
Rose couldn’t wipe the smile from her lips unable to stop herself from resting her head against his chest as he snuggled her close to him.
She stared out at the skyline as the Ferris Wheel car lowered all the more. She felt her heart flutter in a way it had never done around a guy before. She wasn’t sure what washed over her...she’d never really gone for a kiss to the lips on a first date.
Spencer Reid was so different though...deep down she knew that Spencer Reid was downright dangerous. He was making her drop so many of her own rules. He was dangerous and she didn’t care. She could definitely see herself falling for Dr. Spencer Reid.
Reid felt his own smile cross his lips as he held her against him allowing himself to enjoy the view of the skyline and the feel of the girl in his arms. He could absolutely see himself falling for Rose Walsh even harder than he already had.
He knew he’d ride this Ferris Wheel as many times as she wanted, especially if there were a few more kisses in his future.

𝓘𝓬𝔂: 𝓞𝓒 𝔁 𝓡𝓮𝓲𝓭 𝓜𝓪𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓽
Here is the growing masterlist for my new fic! I’ll be posting in prob ~2k word count sections. I don’t have an upload schedule, but I’ll try to contribute once a week, and I’ll post and let y’all know if I can’t. Gotta take care of myself yk what I’m saying, but school gets out in a couple weeks so I should be free as a bird in no time.
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Summary: A skilled Russian spy is recruited by the FBI, to the B.A.U in Quantico, after she agrees to defect. Gideon finds her, Hotch distrusts her, Morgan and Garcia are endeared to her, but most importantly our resident genius (Dr. Spencer Reid) realizes that he is slowly falling head over heels in love with her. Maybe, just maybe, she feels the same way?
Warnings: As of rn, none, but I will come back and edit this list as I need to.
Spencer Reid x OC (f)
This is both a ship fic of these two and her own story, so be prepared for Plot. It’ll be cute an fluffy, angsty, and all that other shit in between. Haven’t decided if there will be any spice yet, but it’s possible.
.
There’s still a lot idk about this fic and how I want it to go so please please please send suggestions! Right now I’m thinking strangers/friends to lovers, with Seven being forward and Reid being adorable and anxious and having them have a mildly angsty flirtation, then a cute relationship with ups and down, could include a wedding- no pregnancy so never fear -and I am oh so tempted to a tragic ending, muwahahahahaha...
Please enjoy lovelies <3 Constructive criticism is welcome, being rude is not.

Oh, Brother
Spencer ReidxOC Bianca Bennett. fluff, I guess?
¡Warnings!: swearing, yelling, if there’s anything else I should add, let me know
Word Count: 1017
A/N: I’m still bad at titles.
“Hey, Reid,” Morgan called. “Do you know who that is talking to Hotch and Strauss?”
Spencer looked up just in time to see Hotch step out of his office with Assistant Director Strauss and another man. They all shook hands. Spencer shook his head.
“I don’t know.” He frowned. “He looks familiar, though.”
The trio made their way toward the other agents, who immediately tried to look as if they hadn’t been trying to eavesdrop. They approached JJ and Emily first and introduced the strange man. Morgan and Reid kept their eyes on their paperwork. Finally, Hotch cleared his throat next to Spencer.
“And this is Agent Morgan and Dr. Reid,” Hotch said. “This is--”
“Someone who failed to make it as an FBI agent, but it is still looking to show some support somehow,” the man said, laughing. “My name is Sora. It’s nice to meet you both.”
Morgan and Reid shook his hand and exchanged pleasantries. Morgan crossed his arms and looked between him, Hotch, and Strauss.
“So, you said you were looking to show some support?” Morgan prompted. “Are they gonna start giving us free breakfast, now?”
Sora laughed at that.
“Maybe,” he said. “I’m looking for areas where I can provide some additional funding. The guys in the main office said this is a great division and all of the agents here are incredible resources for the Bureau.”
“So we’re giving him a tour,” Hotch said.
Morgan raised his eyebrows at the words of flattery. Spencer was still staring at the man, convinced there was something familiar about him.
“That’s awfully generous of you,” Morgan said.
Sora waved it off with a smile. “I’ve been fortunate in my chosen career, I figured it was time I give back.”
“You’ve never been involved with the Bureau before?” Spencer asked.
Sora looked at him, and he saw something change in his expression. He seemed more critical, somehow.
“Nope, never.”
“Well, there’s one more member of the team we’d like to introduce you to,” Hotch said.
“Okay. Hey, Dr. Reid, why don’t you show me the way? I want to ask you about how it is to work under these two,” Sora said, winking at Hotch and Strauss.
Strauss almost looked like she was going to say no, but Hotch beat her to it.
“Of course,” Hotch said. “Reid, will you take him to Garcia’s office?”
“Sure,” Spencer said, pushing down his nervousness.
He led Sora into the hallway.
“So, just to warn you, Garcia isn’t your typical FBI agent,” Spencer said. “Don’t get me wrong, she’s great, she’s just completely different from Hotch or Strauss.”
Sora didn’t seem to care about that. He started asking Spencer about his own career at the BAU. How long he’d worked there, how he got hired, and why. What he usually did on cases, how long the cases would take, how often he had to travel for work. Reid was confused by Sora’s line of questioning, but luckily for him, they had just arrived at Garcia’s door. He opened it and let Sora in.
“Garcia, this is--” Spencer started in surprise. “Bianca?”
Garcia and the woman next to her turned around. She and Garcia smiled.
“Hey, Boy Wonder! You’re a little early,” Garcia said. “Who’s this?”
“Uh, a possible investor. Hotch wants him to meet the team,” Spencer answered distractedly. “Bianca, I thought we weren’t meeting for lunch until one, is everything okay?”
“Of course, I just wanted to chat with Penelope for a bit,” Bianca said. “I don’t want to interrupt your work, though, so if you guys need to talk I can just step outside.”
She rose, carrying her cane with her. Spencer glanced at Sora, who was looking very interested in Garcia’s desk.
“Let me just introduce Garcia and then I’ll take Sora back to the bullpen, okay?” Spencer said.
Bianca froze. Sora looked at Spencer with wide eyes.
“Sora? Sora is a potential investor?” Bianca said.
“Yeah. Do you guys know each other?”
Bianca sighed. “Please don’t tell me.”
“Tell you what?”
Spencer took her hand, concerned.
“Sora Bennett, it is you! I can smell your cologne!” Bianca exclaimed.
Sora cowered behind Garcia. Suddenly, everything became much clearer to Spencer.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, I just wanted to see him for myself and you wouldn’t introduce us!” Sora said.
Bianca wheeled around to face him. “You can’t just stalk my boyfriend at his work! And what is that investor excuse, you’ve never shown an interest in the FBI before! How the hell did they let you in here?”
“Money opens doors,” Sora said.
“Don’t quote Dad at me, you sorry excuse for a twin brother!”
Garcia gasped. Spencer ran a hand through his hair and sighed. Of course. Sora was Bianca’s brother. That’s why he looked so familiar, he looked almost exactly like his sister. She’d talked about him before, of course, but she’d never mentioned a name.
“Penelope, move, I don’t want to hit you by accident,” Bianca said, raising her cane.
“No! Bianca--”
“Bee, I said I was sorry! I’ll give them money for real,” Sora said, almost completely under Garcia’s desk by this point.
“That’s not the point! Who the fuck do you think I am, huh? You’re really going to go checking on my boyfriend behind my back? What, don’t you trust me to make the right decision about who I choose to love?”
It was suddenly dead quiet. Everyone was staring at Bianca, who had frozen once again. She realized it was the first time she had used that word towards Spencer.
“I, uh,” she said.
“You love me?” Spencer asked.
Bianca hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah. I do.”
Spencer cupped her face in his hands. He just stared at her for a moment as his smile grew.
“I love you, too,” he said.
Garcia let out a happy squeal. Sora couldn’t help but smile. He edged toward the door.
“I’ll just leave you guys alone, then, for this happy couple moment. Good job, you’re a good guy, Dr. Reid,” he said.
“Hey! You’re still in trouble!” Bianca snapped.

newbie (spencer reidxOC!) Part 1
a/n: if you’ve looked at my blog recently, you would know that i’m obsessed with spencer reid and criminal minds rn so it was only a matter of time before i wrote for it.
warnings: depictions of sexual assault to main character, some violence, criminal minds case stuff
blurb: delaney wilmer is the newest and youngest agent at the bau. she takes a quick liking to the second youngest agent, spencer reid. teasing and fluff ensues.
chapter 1:
Rain pattered on Delaney’s window as her alarm clock woke her up. With a groan, she reached her arm out to turn it off as she checked the time. 6:30. Much too early for her first day at the FBI. Delaney had recently graduated from the Academy and had been through countless weeks of interviews for the BAU. When she finally got the job, she couldn’t believe it. She was 23, and more than ready to start her dream job. She felt like she’d been training for it her whole life. With a small grin, she pushed her blankets off of her and walked to her bathroom.
After making sure she looked ready, she grabbed her bag and walked out of her apartment. Her hands were steady as she drove to Quantico, her body buzzing with anticipation but also anxiety. She was young and although she was qualified and intelligent, she felt underprepared. But that was why she wanted this job, she wanted to get into the field firsthand and help people. She parked her car and walked into the building.
She went up the elevator and walked out with a bounce in her step. With a light smile, she walked into the bullpen. A few curious faces looked at her, wondering who she was. Spencer Reid was the first one to look up. His jaw dropped as he put his file down. Derek Morgan immediately noticed Reid and looked over to who he was staring at. A smirk quickly found his face as he rolled his chair over to Reid’s desk.
“Think she’s pretty?” He asked slyly, watching as Reid’s pupils dilated just watching Delaney walk.
“W-what? No. No, I don’t.” Spencer scoffed, a blush rising on his cheeks as he looked away.
“Okay, sure, pretty boy.” Derek laughed, patting his friend on the shoulder.
After Derek went back to his desk, Spencer looked back over to Delaney. The room seemed to light up where she was. She wore a light yellow pencil skirt with a knitted cream top tucked into it. Her long, golden hair fell down her back, the ends in loose ringlets. She was the most stunning thing he’d ever seen. He was only pulled out of his reverie when she walked into Hotch’s office. He tried to focus on his file as his heart was beating erratically in his chest.
Delaney softly knocked on Hotchner’s door and he let her in with a small smile. He gestured for her to sit and she did so.
“I’m hoping you got here alright? I know you live close, so I hope you didn’t get lost or anything.” Aaron said.
“No, I got here perfectly.” Delaney smiled.
“Good. Well, in a few minutes I’ll gather the team to go over our newest case and we’ll be leaving to go to Atlanta in about an hour. I’m estimating that we’ll be gone for about a week, so if you need someone to take you to your house to pack a bag, you can do it after the meeting.”
“Um, yes that would be great. I’m sorry I didn’t already have one packed, I wasn’t expecting to leave so soon.” Delaney said, feeling like she’d already failed.
“No, it’s not your fault. Next time you’ll be notified in advance so you’re prepared. I apologize.” Aaron said.
Delaney merely nodded, feeling the tension in her body relax. Aaron also noticed this and smiled lightly at her, standing from his desk. He opened the door and Delaney quickly followed him.
“I’ll introduce you to the team and assign you someone to work with on the case. Of course, you’ll be working with all of us but I’m going to have someone for you to specifically work one-on-one with.” Hotch said.
Delaney nodded, keeping up with him as he walked over to an office near Hotch’s. The sign read “David Rossi” outside the door. Hotch knocked and stopped in the doorway, Delaney beside him.
“Dave, this is Delaney Wilmer, the newest agent we recruited. Delaney, this is David Rossi, an agent in the BAU.”
Rossi stood and walked over to shake Delaney’s hand.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Delaney said politely.
“You too. Do you mind my asking how old you are?” David asked curiously.
“I’m 23, sir.”
“You’re just a baby!” David said, his eyes wide.
Delaney just laughed, knowing this would come up. It didn’t help that she looked young for her age, but she was barely allowed in the BAU because of her age. She’d proven her intelligence and that had gotten her in, but she knew people would be questioning her for a while.
“I look young for my age.” Was all Delaney said.
“Dave, we’re meeting in five,” Hotch said and turned away, walking to another office.
Rossi nodded and gave Delaney a wink as they walked away. They got to a smaller office with the name “Jennifer Jareau” on the door. A blonde woman walked out right as Delaney and Hotch got to the door. She smiled at Hotch and switched her gaze to Delaney.
“Delaney Wilmer, right? I’m Jennifer or JJ as most people call me. Nice to meet you.” JJ said kindly.
“Hi, it’s nice to meet you, too.”
“I look forward to working with you,” JJ said, walking past them to what Delaney assumed was the conference room.
Delaney nodded and Hotch took them down to the bullpen. Hotch stopped near some desks with a few people sitting across from each other. Delaney gave them a small smile as Hotch introduced them.
“This is Emily Prentiss. Prentiss, this is Delaney Wilmer, our newest agent.” Hotch said.
“Hi, welcome to the BAU, Delaney,” Emily said.
“Thank you.”
“This is Derek Morgan,” Hotch said as Delaney and Derek waved at each other.
“And this is Dr. Spencer Reid.” Hotch pointed out the last person.
“Doctor?” Delaney blurted out, cocking her head to the side and furrowing her eyebrows.
“Uh, not that kind of doctor. I have a doctorate in Mathematics, Engineering, and Chemistry. And a Bachelor’s in Psychology and Sociology.” Spencer said quickly, his cheeks turning pink as he rambled.
“Wow. Are you a genius or something? You don’t seem old enough to get all of those and work here.” Delaney asked.
“Uh, well. It-it depends on how you categorize a genius. IQ or how many degrees you have. Um, analytically speaking—” Spencer was cut off by Derek.
“Yes, the kid’s a genius.” He said with a sly smile.
Delaney merely grinned back at Derek and looked back down at Spencer. He was still blushing, he obviously didn’t like meeting new people. Maybe she made him uncomfortable?
“Cool. Nice to meet you, genius.” She said with a slightly teasing tone.
“Yeah, um, you too.” Spencer looked down, obviously flustered by the conversation.
“Okay, I’m going to assign Delaney someone to stick with for this case. I can choose someone or one of you can volunteer to show her the ropes.” Hotch informed the small group.
“Reid can do it,” Morgan said immediately, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Reid sputtered and looked at Morgan with wide eyes but Hotch dismissed this.
“Alright, Reid. Delaney will be with you at all times from now until we get back from Atlanta. Delaney, this is your desk and you’ll obviously have more time to settle in after this case. Everyone, let’s go to the conference room for the briefing.” Hotch said, his face serious as ever.
Delaney set her bag on the desk that Hotch indicated was hers. It was in front of Spencer’s, the seat facing his. Delaney wasn’t sure what to make of their pairing for the case. Spencer seemed sweet, obviously brainy, but it didn’t seem that he liked her all that much. Maybe she could get him to like her while they were working together.
The team made their way to the conference room, Emily standing back to wait for Delaney. She gave her a kind smile.
“Don’t worry about Spencer. He’s just anxious around new people and he’s not super social with… girls.” Emily laughed lightheartedly. “But he’s sweet. He’ll come around to you.”
Delaney smiled at Emily. She felt better knowing that Spencer didn’t hate her. She walked in and found him sitting at the edge of the round table, an empty seat between him and Derek.
“Should I sit with him?” Delaney whispered over to Emily.
“Probably. Hotch will question you sitting with anyone else. Reid is harmless, I promise. Just talk to him.” Emily encouraged.
“Okay.” Delaney smiled, walking over to the empty seat.
Derek immediately scooted his chair closer to Delaney, obviously on a mission. Delaney rose her eyebrows, leaning back in her chair.
“How old are you, newbie?” He asked with furrowed eyebrows.
“I’m 23. How old are you, Agent Morgan?” Delaney asked, crossing her legs and turning towards him.
“A man never tells his age. You’re close to our pretty boy in age, though. How old are you now, Reid? 26?” Morgan asked.
“Yes, I’m 26. I’m curious though, Delaney, what’s your educational background?” Reid asked her.
Delaney moved to face Spencer, turned away from Morgan with her lips pursed. She didn’t enjoy being profiled. Especially by the sly Derek Morgan who seemed to be having way too much interest in this conversation. She did like looking at Spencer, though. She hadn’t had a lot of time to examine him earlier, but now she got a good look at him. His hazel eyes were wide and made him look young, his brown hair was wavy and cut short. He had a couple of layers on with a shirt and tie, a sweater, and a blazer. He was endearingly scratching his head with a thoughtful expression.
“I graduated Valedictorian from my high school in Michigan and have a Masters in Criminal Justice and Criminology as well as a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Penn State. I would ask you the same, but you’ve already informed me.” Delaney smirked at him.
Derek whistled from behind her and Delaney just turned her head to look at him. He was still smirking at her, though she didn’t think he was really being sly towards her specifically.
“We’ve got a girl genius, too. You hear that, Reid? She’s perfect for—” Derek was cut off by an unfamiliar girl walking in.
Spencer was thoroughly flustered when Delaney turned back around. His cheeks were pink and his eyes were darting everywhere. Delaney dismissed it and looked at the girl at the front.
“Martha Alcott, 25, found dead in an alley three nights ago in Atlanta, Georgia. Her throat was slashed and she has multiple lacerations on her body, as well as stab wounds. There are two other victims that were found with similar wounds to their bodies. All victims were between the ages of 23 and 27 with blonde hair. Lindsay Garner and Heather Umbridge were outside of bars in the areas as well.”
“So, he’s got a type. When were the other two killed?” Derek asked.
“Lindsay was the first victim and she was found three weeks ago. Heather was found one week ago and then like I said Martha was found three nights ago.”
“He’s devolving. The unsub could strike at any time, we should move now. Everyone, wheels up in 30.” Hotch said, waving for Spencer and Delaney to stay behind.
“Hi, I’m Penelope Garcia. You’re Delaney, right?” The woman who had just presented the case asked as she came to stand beside Delaney.
“Yeah, that’s me. It’s nice to meet you, Penelope.” Delaney smiled brightly.
Penelope matched Delaney’s enthusiasm and nodded with a huge grin. She patted Delaney’s back gently as she turned to walk away and leave her with Hotch and Reid.
“Reid, I need you to take Delaney to her house so she can grab a bag of things before we leave for Atlanta,” Hotch said quickly, giving Reid a quick pat on the shoulder as he left.
Spencer faced Delaney with wide eyes and Delaney smiled nervously. She felt bad for making him have to stick with her for the entirety of the case. He started to walk and gestured for her to follow. He went to his desk to grab his things and informed Prentiss and Morgan that they would be back soon. Delaney stuck next to him and waved as they went to the elevator. They stood in slightly awkward silence as they waited to get to the first floor. Delaney took a deep breath and turned to look up at Spencer.
“Look, I’m sorry you got roped with me for this case. I know it’s probably annoying to have to basically be my babysitter.” Delaney said guiltily, picking at her fingernails.
Spencer noticed the action as his eyebrows narrowed. He shook his head quickly, his gaze clear as he looked down at her.
“I don’t mind. And I’m not your babysitter. I’ll teach you as much as I can while we’re on this case.” Spencer spoke simply, shrugging his shoulders lightly.
“Okay. Well, I’m grateful for you.” Delaney smiled right as the elevator doors opened.
Spencer watched her go with pink cheeks, his eyes wide. He quickly shook his head to snap out of it. This girl was seriously distracting him.
“Hey, I can drive us if you want. I can get us there and back in 20 minutes.” Delaney said as they walked out into the parking lot.
“Sounds good,” Spencer said, following her to her car.
They got in and rode in comfortable silence, Delaney turning on a slow song she liked at a low volume. She lightly hummed and tapped her fingers on her steering wheel as they drove. Spencer watched her with a small smile on his face. Delaney was already so different from anyone he’d ever met. She was confident in a new environment and seemed to spread her happiness everywhere she went. Spencer couldn’t seem to take his eyes off her and he’d only known her for a couple of hours. He noticed that her car smelled like flowers, and she had little decorations settled around the car.
He tried to stop staring and look out at the road, but his gaze always went back to her. Her eyes seemed to glow in the morning light, their chocolate brown color making her look even sweeter. She had freckles on her nose and cheeks and dimples that appeared when she smiled. A song that he recognized came on and she immediately turned the volume up. She started singing quietly, which made Spencer quietly sing along. Her face turned to him with surprise as a big smile spread on her face. Her eyes found the road and she sang a little louder, coaxing Spencer to do the same.
Soon both of them were loudly singing and Spencer was dancing a little in the passenger seat. Delaney giggled at his silly moves right as she pulled into her parking lot for her apartment building. They sat there for a second, looking at each other with wide grins on their faces. Delaney turned the car off and opened the door, leaving Spencer in the passenger seat. She stopped walking and looked back curiously. He was sat there, unmoving. Delaney chuckled and walked back over, opening his door.
“Hey, you wanna come in? I’ll only be like five minutes.” Delaney said.
“Oh, uh, yeah. Yep, I’m coming.” Spencer unbuckled his seatbelt and quickly followed Delaney to her apartment.
They walked in and Delaney immediately walked towards a hallway. She seemed to forget that Spencer was there and turned around abruptly.
“You can get some coffee or something. Help yourself,” She said, walking towards what Spencer would assume was her bedroom.
He nodded and tried not to pry. He looked around slowly. Her kitchen was fairly small with a countertop and two stools, everything fairly tidy and very colorful. He chuckled as he spotted a light pink kettle on her stovetop. Her living room was similar with a cream couch and pink blankets and pillows draped over it. It was bright with big windows and white lace curtains pulled halfway closed. The whole place smelled like roses, hints of jasmine here and there.
As he walked around he found her bookshelf in the hallway that led to her bedroom. Spencer could learn a lot about someone just based off of their belongings. Her book collection was no exception. She obviously loved classic literature, having all of Jane Austen’s work, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte. She also had some fantasy and romance novels. He couldn’t help but pick up one of her Harry Potter books. He chuckled as he realized that they were thoroughly well-read. There were annotations in the margins and the pages were worn. She emerged from the room at the end of the hall, a pink duffel bag on her arm. She saw him with her book and blushed slightly.
“I like Harry Potter.” Was all she said as she went to the door.
Spencer smiled and put the book back where it was. She walked to her kitchen and reached into a jar. It was painted all over with colorful flowers. When her hand emerged she was holding two cookies. She bit into one and held the other to Spencer.
“Want one? I made them last night. I tend to bake when I’m anxious.” She said as she got out her keys and opened her front door.
He took it with a big grin and followed her out. She shut and locked her door and Spencer bit into the cookie. He looked over at her in shock. Delaney laughed at his face.
“What? Is it bad?” She asked, starting to walk back over to her car.
“No, it’s probably one of the best cookies I’ve ever had.” He spoke truthfully. “Hey, did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was created by accident? In the 1930s, Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, added broken chocolate bar pieces into her cookie batter thinking that they would melt. Instead, the classic dessert was born.”
Delaney didn’t know that. She liked hearing him talk about random facts. He was like a talking encyclopedia.
“I didn’t know that. It’s interesting, though. What else do you know, genius?” She teased, opening her car door and setting her bag in the backseat.
“Um, it's America's favorite cookie. Fifty-three percent of American adults prefer chocolate chip cookies over peanut butter cookies, oatmeal cookies, and any other variety.” Spencer rambled out quickly and eating the cookie when he finished.
Delaney just smiled and pulled out of the parking lot. They got back quickly and made their way back up to the BAU. As they made it back through the bullpen, the rest of the team was gathered in the conference room. The two walked in and Hotch immediately had everyone moving to get to the jet.
Delaney followed the crowd of her new team, nerves buzzing through her veins. This was it. She was actually going to work on her first case with the BAU. She held back a grin as she boarded the jet, stashing her belongings in the compartment above her.
She chose to sit next to Spencer with Emily and JJ across from them. They discussed the case and came to the conclusion that the unsub was probably experiencing a psychotic break and that’s why the murders were becoming more rapid and aggressive. They got assignments from Hotch of where they were going, JJ, Hotch, and Prentiss to the police station, Rossi and Morgan to the most recent crime scene, and Delaney and Reid to the morgue to look at Martha’s body.
“Everyone ready?” Hotch asked as they landed.
They all nodded and headed into their separate cars. Spencer got in the driver’s seat as Delaney settled in the passenger seat. With a nod from him, they pulled out and drove to the morgue. Delaney pulled her notebook out when they arrived, a doctor waiting for them.
“Hi, I’m Doctor Bloomberg, nice to meet you.” A middle-aged man said as Delaney and Spencer walked over to where the man was standing.
“I’m Dr. Spencer Reid and this is Agent Wilmer. Would you mind showing us the body?” Spencer asked politely.
“Of course, follow me.” The doctor said and beckoned for them to follow.
The room had one body lined up, a blue sheet covering its body. Delaney walked over to her and looked her over. Her throat was completely cut open and Delaney could see the long cuts starting at her collarbones. There were some on her shoulders and they went all the way down to her stomach. There were stab wounds on her stomach as well.
“Any sign of sexual assault?” Delaney asked, looking up at the ME.
“Yes on all three girls. It was all post-mortem, the throat being what killed her.” The man explained, looking between Delaney and Spencer.
Both of them nodded, getting a clearer picture of the unsub. He raped and tortured the girls before finally slitting their throats to kill them. Delaney pushed down the shudder that she felt rising in her. Her mind was slipping to past memories of hands on her body and lips forcing hers apart. She looked at the bruising on the girl’s throat and remembered covering her own with makeup.
“Hey. Wilmer, you okay?” Spencer leaned close to her and set a hand on her shoulder.
Pulled out of her memories, Delaney looked up at him and forced a smile on her face. She shook her head with a forced laugh and looked away from his intense stare.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” She dismissed his worried look and put a couple of feet between them.
Spencer watched her with a scrutinizing look as the ME continued describing the bodies of the women that were killed. When they were finished, Spencer’s phone rang and he picked it up. Hotch informed him that they found another body. Hanging up, he bid goodbye to the ME and informed Delaney of what was going on.
“Another body was found. We need to go.” He said, beckoning her to follow.
Spencer got in the driver’s seat and handed her his phone. Delaney furrowed her eyebrows and hesitantly took it.
“Hotch realized none of us had time to get your number. Put yours in my phone and I’ll send it to the rest of them when we get there.” Spencer explained.
Delaney nodded and put her number in Spencer’s phone. They rode in relative silence as they made their way to the newest crime scene. Every once in a while he would glance over at her but she didn’t look back at him. They parked right outside the newest bar and walked over to the crime scene where Hotch, Prentiss, and JJ were standing. They turned as Delaney and Spencer came to them.
“Grace Hanley, 22, she was murdered just a few hours ago. Her body is in the same condition as the others but this time the unsub stabbed her around 30 times. The last 3 only had around 5 stab wounds.” Hotch said as they walked closer to the body.
Delaney let out a sharp breath as she looked at the girl. She looked… eerily similar to Delaney. So much that she took a double-take when she saw her. The girl’s hair was the exact same shade of golden blonde and her body was just as small and delicate. Delaney covered her mouth and closed her eyes for a second. She felt a hand on her shoulder as she opened her eyes.
“You okay?” Spencer asked gently, his eyes sympathetic.
“Yeah… yeah, sorry. I normally wouldn’t react like this but she just looks… so much like me.” Delaney said with her eyes wide and unblinking.
“Yes, she does,” Hotch said from behind them. “The unsub obviously has a specific type.”
“And he’s clearly spiraling. The first murders were a couple of weeks apart and now they’re only days apart. From the footage we got from the first bar, the unsub looks to be in his mid to late 20’s. Maybe these women are surrogates for a past lover?” Emily suggested.
“We should get back to the police station to give the profile,” Hotch said.
They all nodded and got into their separate cars. Delaney sighed deeply and tried to get the image of the victim out of her head. Spencer looked over at her and gently tapped her shoulder.
“The first few are difficult to look at. Especially when they look like you.” Spencer said.
“I’ve seen a dead body before. Trust me, I have had my share of horrifying scenes in front of me. That girl just… she just confused me.” Delaney said, looking out the window.
Spencer was tempted to ask her about the horrifying things she’d seen but held off. She would tell him when they were more acquainted with each other.
They made it to the station and set up in a small conference room. Delaney looked through her files and started making notes. She added the newest victim’s picture to their evidence board. Soon, the whole team was at the station and they were giving the profile.
“This unsub is a charismatic, handsome guy in his mid to late 20’s. He uses this charm to lure young women out of bars and eventually brutally murder them.” Rossi introduced.
“We believe the unsub has a specific type, young women in their early 20’s with long blonde hair and smaller body types,” Hotch said.
“So like her?” A police officer asked while pointing at Delaney.
“Yes, exactly like me. The unsub is using girls like me as surrogates for a woman he believes wronged him. It may have been a past lover or spouse.” Delaney said.
“And he’s devolving. While his first murders were weeks apart, the last two were just days apart. His anger is becoming worse and his murders more violent.” Prentiss said.
“We believe the unsub is experiencing a sort of psychotic break. Something triggered this urge to kill and he’s not going to stop until we find him.” Spencer said.
“So all of us need to be on high alert with the bars around this area. He will be on the prowl for new victims. The press will be notified of his appearance and his type so women are aware.” JJ said.
“That’s all for now. If you have any questions feel free to ask any of us.” Morgan said and the crowd dispersed.
The team went to the conference room and sat around the table. Delaney looked at her watch for the first time that day and realized that it was past 10 at night. Her exhaustion hit her like a truck as she sat back in her chair, closing her eyes for a second.
“I think that’s enough for today. Let’s head to the hotel and get some rest for the night.” Hotch announced as the team sat together.
Delaney sighed with relief. She didn’t want to admit it, but the day had been so long. Spencer had told her the first case would be difficult, but this one just seemed to be hitting all her personal triggers. Everyone grabbed their things and piled into the SUV’s. Delaney slid into the backseat after Emily and Spencer, resting her head against the window.
Soon enough, they were at the hotel and Hotch was passing out keys to rooms. Delaney got hers and quickly made her way to her room, closing herself in immediately and sitting on her bed. The room felt impossibly silent as she stared ahead at the wall.
“What a fucking day.” She said to no one in particular.
After sitting for a few minutes she found the strength to get up and get out of her now uncomfortable clothes. She slipped into her pajamas and washed her face. Finally feeling relaxed, she curled up in her bed in the fetal position. Her mind kept wandering back to that night.
She was still in high school, about to graduate from her senior year, and get the hell out of her town. She’d been a poster child her entire life and decided to let herself be a kid once before leaving for college. She and her friends went to a party on the weekend of their graduation. Delaney had drunk way too much for someone who’d never drunk before and someone was holding her hips as she danced. She didn’t think much until he was grabbing her wrist and pulling her into a dark room.
His hands were everywhere on her, one gripping her throat way too tight while the other roamed her entire body. She tried to talk and struggled against his grip but he held her forcefully in place. Delaney felt her vision darkening as he was unzipping her dress and unbuckling his belt. She tried to say no but it was too late. With mangled cries, he didn’t let her go until he was satisfied. Delaney was sobbing in pain and shame. These things didn’t happen in her town. They didn’t happen to girls like her. She was so careful.
Delaney hadn’t spoken to anyone about it after. She left for Penn State with a broken image of herself and never opened up about what had happened at that party.
Delaney felt the tears falling down her face in her hotel bed. She was hyperventilating, unable to control her emotions. That memory had been repressed for so long that she wasn’t sure how to cope. How had she pushed it aside all these years?
She was so caught up in her emotions that she violently flinched at the knock on her door. Sitting up in her bed she wiped her tears quickly and ruffled her hair, trying to hide her teary eyes. Delaney slowly made her way to her door and opened it. Spencer stood on the other side.
“Uh, hey.” He said quietly, still in his work clothes.
“Hi.” Delaney croaked out, her cheeks turning pink with shame and embarrassment.
“I know we just met today and we’re barely friends but I wanted to check and see that you were okay. I noticed your shift in mood through the day and I’m worried about you.” He said, looking deep in her eyes.
Delaney’s mouth opened and closed in disbelief. If she’d been expecting anything, it definitely wasn’t this. He’d come to check on her? She wouldn’t admit it, but she’d never been very good with friends ever since her incident. She didn’t like trusting people so she wasn’t used to anyone coming to check on her.
“Um, well. It was… it was a tough day. And I was, well. I-I…” Delaney trailed off, her throat closing up and tears welling in her eyes.
“Hey, hey.” Spencer’s eyes widened as he took in Delaney’s state.
Her eyes were red with tears threatening to spill out. Her body was trembling as she tried to cover herself with her arms as an almost shield. He could tell she was trying so hard not to cry. Spencer hesitantly set a hand on her shoulder and she stepped back, shutting herself off.
“I’m fine. Than-thank you for checking up on me, Reid. Uh, sweet dreams.” She said with a pained smile, stepping back into her room and closing the door.
“Uh—” Spencer protested, but the door was already closed.
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. That didn’t go as he’d wanted. If anything he just wanted to hug her and tell her it would be okay. Maybe he’d come back in the morning.
“Sweet dreams.” He whispered to the door and made his way to his room.
Delaney listened as he walked away, tears slipping down her face. He didn’t need to see her like that. She’d explain in the morning.
With a heavy heart, she turned all the lights off and fell into a deep sleep in seconds.
Spencer lay in his bed for an hour after that, trying to erase Delaney’s face from his mind. What was it about her that he couldn’t get out of his head? Shaking his head, he rolled over and finally fell into a troubled sleep.

Adelyn ran a hand through her hair as she walked to the elevator readjusting her bag, she chewed on her lower lip nervously. Today was the first day on her job as a tech analyst for the BAU. She was 24 which sometimes surprised people considering she was under 5’0. She looked at the buttons on the elevator trying to remember which floor it was on.
Reid was late for work, well almost. “Wait!” He yelled into the elevator and rushed in, getting in on time. He pressed his floor level and sighed “I’m sorry about that.” He speaks up. “I’m Reid” he looks at her and smiles, holding his hand out to shake
Adelyn looked up wide eyed when she heard someone shout wait, she smiled a little as she looked up at him, she felt small as hell compared to the man who just introduced himself as Reid, “Adelyn.” She offered a smile shaking his hand, she glanced at the floor level he had chosen, “Looks like we are on the same team.” She mumbled a bit more to herself than anything. She dropped her hand once they finished shaking hands she reached her hand up pushing a strand of hair that fell into her face.
Reid picked up on what she said. “You’re new to our team? That’s awesome! It’s not everyday that we get someone new.” He smiled at her, being his usual friendly self. “That’s usually because they either leave or get killed” then he thought for a second “or pregnant” thinking back to one of his coworkers. Then he cringed as he realized what he said “but I doubt that’ll happen to you”
Adelyn smiled at his friendly tone, “I doubt I’ll be leaving, as for dying i have quite the streak.” She smirked a bit before looking up at him, “As for pregnant I doubt that’s gonna happen anytime soon.” She laughed a bit shaking her head softly looking forward to the doors of the elevator that started to open, she gave Reid a small nod before walking out, she walked as if she fit in and owned the place, she learned from her older brother to act as if you fit in until you do.
“Actually there are an alarming amount of unwanted pregnancies in the DC area.” Reid tells her, one of his useless facts that he knows. “I hope you have a good first day.” He tells her before stepping out the elevator and walking over to his desk and friends. Hotch was soon alerted that Adelyn had arrived. “Hello! Welcome to the team!” He put his hand out for her to shake “I feel like you’ll fit in perfectly here.”
Adelyn let out a small giggle hearing his fact, she looked up at Hotch and smiled brightly, “Thank you! I’m excited to finally new you Agent Hotchner.” She smiled shaking his hand. She was way too excited to be on the team.
“Would you like to see your office?” He asks her politely. “It’s kind of set up for you but of course there is room for you to decorate. I see you have met Reid already.” He comments on them being in the elevator together. “I promise we are not all as weird as him” he jokes with her. “Yeah we are normal. Hi I’m Morgan” he introduces himself with a smile
Adelyn smiled and nodded to seeing her office she looked over at him and giggled, “he wasn’t that weird.” She mumbled before smiling at Morgan, “Adelyn Miller.” She smiled she heard and excited squeal and turned quickly to see none other than Penelope Garcia Adelyn let out an excited squeal nearly running over to her- before she joined she had become close friends with Garcia they hung out sometimes but they mostly just bonded over technology.
“Well I see I’m not the favorite.” Morgan joked to Hotch as he watched Adelyn immediately go straight to Garcia. “You’re no ones favorite.” Reid jokes as he goes to join them. “Is there anything I can do to help get you settled? I don’t want you to feel all lonely” Reid tells her. “No time for that.” JJ says as she moves past “time for a case.” She walks straight to the conference room. “Never mind, I owe you one.” Reid says
Adelyn smiled brightly at Garcia as she held her at arms length, “Let me get a look at you!” Garcia giggled before her happiness had a slight stoop hearing there was a case, she looked up at JJ and her brows furrowed, “Guess I’m diving headfirst.” She laughed a little before she walked towards the conference room readjusting her bag,
she wasn’t aware everyone had their own seats so she sat down at one of them not knowing it was Reid’s
Reid came in shortly after. “Nope.” He said and wheeled her out of the spot. “Reid put her back.” Hotch demanded “she’s in my spot!” He whined like a child. “I don’t care.” Reid put her back slowly, making sure Hotch knew he was upset before taking his seat. Hotch ignored him “seven hookers, killed over the span of three days.” JJ says. “Why didn’t they contact us sooner?” Morgan asks
Adelyn let out a squeak feeling her chair move she looked up at him raising a brow she couldn’t help but laugh at the situation before Hotch started to talk about the case she pulled out her laptop and chewed on her lip, “They most likely didn’t contact us because hookers run a high risk lifestyle and that area is known for people turning up dead.” Adelyn spoke without thinking. Garcia grinned at her, “Looks like boy genius has some competition.” Garcia quipped. JJ chuckled and shook her head
Reid shook his head “don’t take my seat next time new girl.” He joked before turning his attention back to the case. “And the new girl is right, they wouldn’t think about it. Though don’t you think multiple murders of only prostitutes wasn’t alarming? Are you sure they just didn’t want to admit they had a prostitute population?” He challenged Adelyn's proposition
Adelyn looked over at Reid with a raised brow, “They might.” She shrugged then continued, “It could also be the manager of the new campaign hiring someone- that town has a campaign to clean the streets of violence, drugs, and prostitution.” She leaned back into her chair and looked over at Reid, “It actually wouldn’t be that alarming with the rate of those murders-“ she paused to skim over the file, “The alarming part is the fact that it’s not one but 47 stab wounds. Which is showing that the aggression of this unsub is escalating. Each has a different number but they started at 47 and just went up- I’m gonna throw it out there that it’s probably a male in his early 20s. Oh and Reid- I have a name.” She set the file back down.
Reid listened very closely, making sure to listen. This was new to him, having someone who can match his energy. Someone who can follow his facts. “I think the new girl fits you very well” he shoots her a joking grin. “I do agree with the new girl, the number of stab wounds may continue to go up until we might not be able to recognize the victims.” Reid adds on to her thoughts. “In that case, wheels up in 20” Hotch closes his file and walks out to grab his bag. Everyone else follows his lead except for Reid. “So how long have you wanted to work at the BAU?” He asks her, standing up.
Adelyn made a face at the fact that Reid kept referring to her as a new girl, her jaw tightened a bit she got up looking over at Spencer, “Quite a bit. Garcia introduced it to me once while I was complaining about my past job.” She shrugged a bit, collecting her things, “see you in the field.” She flashed him an award winning smile before she left him in the room to be by himself, she grabbed her go bag from Garcia’s room. Garcia told her to make one and bring it before the day started so she was lucky in that sense.
Reid watched her walk out, walking to his desk shortly after to grab his own bag. He made his way to the airport and got on the plane “care to join me in a game of chess?” He asks her nicely, trying to be welcoming. “I rarely lose and it would be nice to have a challenge as Morgan isn’t the best.” He jokes at his best friend. Morgan laughs “shut it pretty boy.”
Adelyn smirked a bit, “A challenge indeed.” She muttered before she got situated in front of Reid. She fixed her skirt before she looked over the board then at Spencer, “It’s been a few years since I played so go easy?” She asked with her brow raised a bit
“Of course I’ll go easy.” He tells her and keeps to his word as he tries to not overanalyze his moves. He doesn’t want to be rude. JJ sits next to Emily “well Reid seems to be warming up to someone as smart as him. Looks like he’s actually being nice.” She chuckles.
Adelyn may have fed him a lie, she wanted to see his reaction when she ‘beat’ him she knew she probably wouldn’t considering what Garcia had told her. She leaned back into her seat after she made a move. Emily looked over and chuckled a bit, nodding, “He might have a thing for her.” She smirked, “I mean she’s pretty- looks to be his age- seems to be brilliant- only thing that makes them different is her confidence.”
Reid knew he could easily make two moves to win but decided not to make it, instead setting one of his chips into an easily vulnerable place. He knew he was going to win this round. JJ chuckles “he might think she’s cute but we’ve all heard the ‘you can’t like someone that quickly’ speech over and over again.” She says with a slight chuckle. “Reid just made himself lose.” Rossi speaks up
Adelyn raised a brow before she made the move to essentially kill his chip. “when I said go east I didn’t mean throw the damn thing.” She giggled a bit. Emily nodded with a small laugh, “You’re right..” she looked over at Rossi, her eyes wide, “why the hell would he do that?”
“I figured I needed to lose some time. '' he chuckles and sets the board aside. “Don’t worry, one day I’ll make sure you lose” he jokes with her “so what brought you to the BAU? Anything special?” He asks. “It’s his way of showing kindness. By allowing himself to lose he’s allowing himself to make a friend.”
Adelyn rolled her eyes a bit bringing her knees to her chest carefully she shrugged a bit, “My little sister actually.” She gave a soft sad smile, “When I was 14 she got taken...she was about 5 at the time. Some sick bastard decided he wanted a little girl too..” she paused a bit scrunching her nose in disgust, “To well have his way with..he then murdered her and we didn’t find her until years later.” She looked at her nails picking at them, “I just want to make sure nobody else has to deal with that.”
“That’s a good reason to join the BAU. I don’t know if you were local before this but I can show you around after our case is over. While I don’t get out of my house much I know some amazing bookstores and coffee places.', he’s always makes an effort to be nice to new team members but never this nice. “I know a park or two that could be very nice.”
Adelyn smiled softly and nodded, “I am new to the area...I was in New York City before this.” She laughed a bit, “But that would be nice..” she looked up at him with soft eyes, “Are you always this nice?” She asked with a soft giggle. Emily smirked, kicking JJs foot, “Still being nice huh?”
“What’s New York like? I’ve never been there just for fun. It’s usually always business and you never really have time to explore when you’re working.” He tells her. “I try to be nice, after all my good looks aren’t going to get me far in life” he jokes. “Is this a special way of flirting?” JJ asks. “Did he just make a joke that we could understand?” She gasps
Adelyn smiled brightly, “New York is..something else?” She laughed a bit, “I don’t really know anything else.” She shrugged before she laughed at his joke, shaking her head. She bit her lip before she decided to be a bit forward, “must’ve been dealing with quite a few blind people.” She smirked, Emily's eyes widened a bit, “Oh my god it is!” She let out a laugh shaking her head, “Maybe kids got moves..” Morgan chuckled
He laughs and goes to say something before Garcia pops up on the computer. No more time for joking now. “Guys there has been another murder. Everything's the same except for there is a cross carved into her chest.” Garcia says. “That could mean multiple things, the unsub thinks they’re unholy or he believes he’s helping god by getting rid of them. No matter what this isn’t good.” JJ says
Angelina’s smile fell the moment she heard there was another murder she immediately got into professional mode. She chewed on her lower lip in through before her eyes widened a bit, “Or he’s recreating something from a book or the Bible..” Emily nodded a bit looking at JJ before she looked over at Adelyn with a confused look
“What in the Bible? There are multiple stories in the Bible and it’s hard to limit them down to just one.” JJ tells Adelyn. “It would take way too long to go through the whole Bible.” She says. “That’s not true. The Bible is a light read” Reid speaks up. Morgan snorts “for you it is Reid. Only for you.” He tells him
Adelyn laughed a bit, “Reid is somewhat right. He may read it faster but it can be a light read. Maybe the unsub took it out of context...” she shrugged a bit leaning back into her chair unfolding her legs from her chest.
“Like how people take the gay quote?” JJ asks “actually what the quote is-“ Reid starts “okay we know. We know.” Morgan cuts Reid off, not wanting to hear a lecture. “Morgan and Reid, you two go to the latest crime scene. JJ and Adelyn you will go to the M.E.‘s office. Me and Rossi will go to the station once we land.” Hotch speaks up, sitting in the far back
Adelyn snorted watching Reid and Morgan interact. She looked up at Hotch and nodded, “Alright.” She smiled softly before she looked over at Reid, “Wouldn’t it make more sense? He could be thinking he’s being driven by God to take out all that is a ‘sin’? Or that God told him to take out what his biggest sin is?” Adelyn theroizes.
“I agree with Adelyn. Sometimes when something traumatic happens instead of thinking god just failed them, they think that they did something to be considered a sin and got punished. So then they go out to punish the sinners.” Reid adds on to her statement.
Shortly after the plane touches down. Reid grabs Adelyn's bag and gives it to her “here you go” he says then grabs his own. JJ walks up to Adelyn. “Do you want to drive?” She asks
Adelyn smiled softly, “Thank you..” she slugs the bag over her shoulders before looking up at JJ, “As long as you're good at giving directions.” She smiled, “I’m awful at directions..” she adds with a small laugh
JJ chuckles “I’ll do my best but I can’t promise.” She throws her bags in the trunk along with Adelyns then gets in the passenger seat. “I know you haven’t experienced much of the BAU yet but how are you liking it?” She asks her. “Anybody in particular you can see yourself getting along with?” She asks
Adelyn laughed a bit before she got in the driver side starting up the car, “I’m enjoying it a lot.” She smiled looking over at JJ before she started driving, “Garcia obviously but with the newer people to me I think Reid and you.” She smiled softly looking over from the road
JJ smiled “I hope I can be a good friend of yours. So Reid’s cute isn’t he?” She was of course prying a lot. “He can also be really sweet when he’s not spitting out facts that no one understands.” She chuckles, “I’m sure you guys will get along.” She tells her. JJ was hoping to get something spicy out of her so she could of course tell Emily. She was a little invested in the relationship
Adelyn blushed a bit looking over at the road, “ He’s pretty cute..” she smiled, “As for the facts, I can definitely understand how it feels..” she giggled a bit running a hand through her hair, “My old team basically put me on desk duty so I didn’t have to really speak to them, they got tired of me always arguing with facts and giving random facts.” She laughed a bit
“While we sometimes want to shut Reid up, the most we will do is put a muzzle on him.” She jokes “hey that’s actually a pretty good idea. I’ll have to look into that.” She chuckles, “So what did you do at your old job?” She asks her, it can never hurt to get to know someone who you’re going to be working with all the time. Plus it’s a nice feeling to make friends
Adelyn laughed a bit, she glanced at JJ but her eyes mainly focused on the road, “I was a part of the NYPD.It wasn’t really anything big..I was an associate general counsel. I wouldn’t recommend joining if your IQ is slightly above average. All the males seem to become more alpha around you. The ‘you're a woman you can’t be smart’ or the ‘you should be at home making food and having children’ came in way too much.” She frowned a bit
She groaned “sadly some cops that we help think the same way as them.” She shakes her head “I can’t tell you how many times the guys had to stick up for me. Especially Reid. He’ll spit facts at them about how much women belong in this workforce as men.” She explains. “He’s quite helpful.” She says. “Turn right here and you’ll take a left after that and we should be there.”
Adelyn nodded a bit with a soft smile, “He seems like the type..” she nodded a bit and turned right, “What brought you to the BAU?” She questioned as she turning left at where JJ said to
“My sister... I don’t really want to go into detail but she committed suicide due to someone else. I also just love saving people. Helping people. Doing whatever I can do to make sure that someone’s life is impacted for the better. I want to change the world one case at a time. I may not be able to get all of the bad guys but getting some of them helps” she tells her with a slight sigh. “I’ve made a big impact and that I know for sure. I get letters from families that I’ve helped all the time.”
Adelyn nodded a little. She gently patted JJ’s hand with a soft smile as she put the car in park, “I’m glad you’ve found the light in a bad situation. I know it’s hard.” She smiled a bit before she got out of the car
JJ smiled back but quickly put on a business face. She walked into the M.E.’s office. “Hi We are with the FBI. We have a few questions about the body’s.” JJ says. “Well there was nothing abnormal other than the stab marks. Those surprised me the most. I’m doctor Lyn by the way.” The doctor introduces herself
Adelyn nodded softly, she didn’t bother introducing herself, she walked towards the newest body and knelt down a bit looking at the stab wounds. “you missed something.” She sighed a bit, “The blade isn’t normal..it has a diamond shape to it..it looks similar to the blades angels carried in one of the versions of the Bible..I think I know exactly what’s going on.” She frowned a bit before going to the other bodies to check if they each had the same wound markings
The doctor quickly checked and found out she was right. “Great eye. I don’t know how I could have missed that.” Lyn says. “Maybe this has something to do with the Bible. Maybe we would be looking for a priest or a person who attends church religiously?” JJ asks Adelyn
Adelyn shook her head, “Look for someone who used to attend church religiously..they might have been super into the church's community would’ve had a big traumatic experience..we are going to be dealing with two unsubs. One is going to be the dominant who doesn’t want to get their hands dirty while the other is going to be very submissive…”
JJ nods “would you like to do the honors of telling Garcia all of that? She gets excited when she gets to help so it’s always an honor to tell her. I can inform Hotch of what’s going on and what to look for.” She suggests
Adelyn smiled a bit and nodded, “I’ll go call her now.” She smiled softly before she turned around pulling out her phone she called Garcia, “Why hello there my apprentice!” Penelope excitedly answered, “Hi Penelope! I need you to search for the nearest church to the crime scenes then look for people who go to the church...and if it’s possible see if you can file out people who haven’t gone through any huge traumas...”
Meanwhile JJ was filling in Hotch who would later fill everyone else in. “Hey Adelyn, he wants us to rush back to start trying to connect other dots together. I can drive this time as Hotch doesn’t like my driving which means I’m doing something right” she chuckles and heads out to the car
“uh duh!! I’m Penelope Garcia! I’ll hit ya back when I have a list!” With that Garcia hung up. Adelyn nodded looking over with a smile towards JJ she pocketed her phone before she tossed J the keys
She quickly got them back to the station. Hotch met them at the front door. “There was another killing. We think our arrival has sparked some type of ‘I must finish my job’ type reaction. Reid and Morgan just arrived at that scene.” Hotch informs them.
Adelyn frowned a bit, “I know exactly what’s going on, can we get them on the phone? I’ve read about cases like this. I just never thought I’d run into it.” She looked up at Hotch, “It isn’t really a ‘I must finish my job’ it’s more of a ‘notice me! I’m doing what the angels are telling me to’ ” she frowned
Hotch nods and immediately calls Reid.
“What’s up Hotch?” Reid asks. “Adelyn has something to inform you guys of.” He tells him. “Listen carefully.” Hotch says. “You’re now on speaker, take it away Adelyn.” Reid tells her as Morgan comes closer to him to hear.
Adelyn nodded softly at Hotch, “Alright so we are dealing with two unsubs...one is dominant one submissive. The dominant doesn’t want to get their hands dirty and they are posing as an Angel. The submissive unsub probably experienced a traumatizing event that made them believe angels could talk to him..the unsub is using a blade that was used by angels in a version of the Bible. Our submissive unsub is indeed taking out these victims because they are trying to flush out their sin so when they do in fact die they can rest peacefully. The unsubs are going to be big people in the church community- one is still going to be in it but the other has probably strayed- stopped going, doesn’t show up for anything. I have Garcia compiling a list as we speak.”
Reid and Morgan swap glances “do you think one of them could be on or around the crime scene?” Morgan asks “we have a few people here that the police are trying to keep back. Is it possible that our dominant unsub is here?”
Adelyn chewed on her lip before she thought for a minute, “The dominant submissive will most definitely be there...the dominant is going to probably stick out but only subtly not too much but definitely still noticeable. They are gonna be trying to comfort anyone who is panicking, they are gonna be completely calm...”
“Okay well we could use the extra hands if you can get over here Adelyn.” Reid suggests “it would be nice having four people here instead of two. Please try to get here.” Reid hangs up. “I’ll go with you Adelyn.” Hotch speaks up “JJ stays here on standby for Garcia on the laptop.” JJ nods as Hotch makes it out to the car.
Adelyn nodded, “Alright.” She quickly went out to the car, “Look for someone who even looks like they belong in the church settings..they are gonna take being an ‘Angel’ to the extreme. They have a god-like complex too...”
Morgan and Reid were faced with a difficult challenge. Especially if the unsubs found out that they were looking for people in the crowd. “Adelyn and Hotch need to get here fast.” Reid mumbles. Meanwhile Hotch was speeding a little bit, they can’t let these unsubs get away. “Are you sure you know what to look for?” Hotch asks her
Adelyn looked over at Hotch, “I’ve read all of the cases for this before- this one was one of my favorites to study. I know exactly what I’m looking for..”
He nods, trusting her completely. They pull up. “You just say the word when you think we’ve found them. We will follow your lead. You know more than we do.” Hotch tells her. Reid was relieved they came so fast. They weren’t able to find someone matching the descriptions they were given.
Adelyn nodded softly, she immediately got out of the car walking over to Reid and Morgan, “Alright you two...look for someone who looks like they are straight out of one of those cheesy shows..the ones where most are dressed stereo typically?”
Reid scanned the crowd. “Found him. Who would the other one be?” Reid asks. “The guy directly next to him, watching him like a hawk.” Morgan suggested. “How should we take them down? They’re clearly going to run. What do you call Adelyn?” Reid asks her
Adelyn looked at the guy before she looked over at Reid, “Cause a scene.” She smirked, “I’ll pull the whole theatrics..I’ll cry the dominant unsub will be drawn to come help.”
He nods and immediately pulls all the stuff he learned from high school theater class. “Ma’am you need to back up behind the crime scene tape. We can’t have you messing with evidence.” He warns her, slightly pushing her back
Adelyn looked up, making her eyes water slightly, “That’s my sister! There’s no way in hell I’m going to back up!” She dramatically shouted, she ‘tried’ to push past Reid.
Reid grabbed her a little rougher, still being careful not to hurt her. “Listen ma’am that isn’t going to be happening. I’m sorry that’s your sister but I need you behind the crime tape.” He slightly pushed her back while Morgan raised the tape. “Hey it’s okay.” A male spoke up behind her. “Anything I can do to help?” He asks
Adelyn made herself cry, she looked up at the male who had spoken, “I- I just don’t know what to do...my sister..she was all I had left.” She let the dramatics come in. She may have been a tech but she was damn good at her job outside of just that
Reid nodded to Morgan as they had found their unsub. Morgan was on the male that was helping Adelyn. “Hands up, don’t make any sudden moves.” Morgan says. That’s when the other unsub takes off and Reid runs after him. The unsub smiles, “I don’t know why you’re arresting me.” He says
Adelyn looked up at the male wiping her false tears. She looked him over before she easily found one of the blades used in the murders on him and her face fell, “Morgan something isn’t right..” she looked at the man in front of her
The man grabbed Adelyn and held the knife to her throat. “Lying is a sin, you know?” The male asks and Morgan immediately grabs his gun. “You don’t want to make this stupid mistake. Put the knife down. Now.” He demands
Adelyns jaw clenched, her hand immediately went to the guys wrist, “It’s also a sin to murder.” She mumbled before she leaned back into the guy moving to elbow the guy noticing the male was mostly paying attention to Morgan since he had drawn his firearm. She suddenly wished she was bigger and stronger since it barely did anything
“You don’t get it! I’m saving people! All you people want to stop god! None of you want god to live on! I do. He talks to me all the time. You aren’t worthy of hearing God's voice.” The man yells. “Drop the knife!” Morgan yells again. “I’m saving her!” He raises the knife up to stab her and that’s when Morgan shoots him
Adelyn's eyes widened as the guy fell, “Thanks Derek..” she looked over at the guy on the floor, “He wasn’t the dominant..” she tilted her head taking a deep breath, “SHIT REID!” She immediately started running towards the direction Spencer ran in
Morgan ran after her, not needing her to get into another situation where she was trapped. Reid and Hotch had the unsub on the floor, Hotch handcuffing him. Reid was out of breath leaning over with his hands resting on his knees. He wasn’t exactly a guy to hit the gym often so he felt like he was dying
Adelyn let out a breath of relief, she frowned. “I’m so sorry Hotch.” She looked up at him her eyes wide- he just put his full faith in her and she fucked up
“You helped us find these two. Even if you were off a little bit I have no doubt in my mind that you solved it faster than any of us could.” Hotch tells her as he puts the unsub in the car. “You did a good job adelyn. You deserve a coffee and book break.” Reid smiles at her
Adelyn shook her head, “I could’ve put someone’s life at risk..” she frowned looking down at her feet, she looked over at Reid and chewed on her lip, “I thought I had it- the submissive was more into the dominant role than I thought...”
He hugged her, something Reid isn’t exactly a big fan of considering the man was a germaphobe. “You caught them though did you not?” He asks her softly. “Come on, I found a coffee place here. The one back home can wait.” He tells her “it’s just around the corner.” He tells her and starts softly leading her towards it.
Adelyn's eyes widened a bit but she returned the hug, “okay...” she frowned a bit before she followed him. Morgan looked over at Hotch with a smirk, “Pretty boy found himself a pretty girl..”

Spencer led her to the coffee shop and sat her down at a table. “What do you want? I’ll go get it for you.” He tells her softly, trying to be as comforting as he can. Hotch smiles a little bit “who knew he actually had game and could flirt” he responded back to Morgan
Adelyn looked up at him, “Surprise me?” She offered a soft smile. Morgan laughed, nodding, “Who knew...” he shook his head, “Let’s get this cleaned up.”
Reid nods, trying not to look alarmed as he didn’t know her very well so he’s not sure what she would like. He went up and ordered her a coffee with French vanilla creamer in it. He came back a couple minutes later “I hope you don’t hate this but we didn’t exactly talk about favorite coffees on the plane” he chuckles softly
Adelyn giggled a little and nodded, “Thank you!” She smiled and took a sip, her face lit up, “It’s super good!!” She smiled up at him, taking another sip. “Is this what you usually get?” She asked tilting her head to the side
He nods “on occasion as it isn’t my favorite drink” he explains to her. “So do you want to talk about it?” He asks her softly, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to”
Adelyn nodded a little, “What is your favorite drink?” She asked, leaning against the table. “And we can talk about anything I really don’t mind.” She let out a little laugh running a hand through her hair
“I like black coffee with a ton of sugar. It tastes amazing like that. The sugar has to overpower the black coffee taste though” he tells her. “So do you plan on staying with the BAU long or are you someone who likes to hop around from job to job?” He asks her as he takes a sip of his coffee
He chuckles “I don’t mind them but I know this job is for me. I love saving people and helping out families. Plus the view out of the plane is kind of amazing. I don’t think I could find a better job. Though I do eventually want to teach.” He tells her “it would be nice to give education to kids”
Adelyn nodded a little looking at his eyes full of interest, “You could probably get some teaching in..” she shrugged, “Talk to Agent Hotchner about it maybe?” She smiled a little while taking a sip of her coffee, “If it’s something you genuinely wanna do..do it. Where there’s a will there’s a way.” She smiled
He nods “I know that I could most likely get some in but with how my job currently is, with it being where I have to leave ASAP for a case, I don’t know how much I could realistically get in without being on-call. I just don’t want to dial it back too much on working at the FBI” he tells her. “Maybe one day but I don’t see that day happening anytime soon”
Adelyn looked over with a soft smile, “It could-I’m sure you can work it into the schedule to get off at the BAU to teach.” She leaned onto the table, “You’re brilliant Spence.” She smiled looking up at him, “It would be a waste just to spend it on cases...You’d be an amazing teacher!”
He smiles softly and looks down with a slight blush, “so sure about that as I tend to ramble about things no one really understands.” He explains “I doubt my students would find me to be a very interesting professor, you know?” He says and takes a sip of his coffee
Adelyn giggled a little, “You’d be surprised Spencer..My freshman year at college all my teacher did was spout on and on about the subject- I learned more when he ranted than when he actually taught.” She leaned back a bit and blushed a little, “As for the interesting part- you’ll get students maybe not to learn but they will..” she fiddled with the cup her cheeks bright pink
He nods softly “maybe soon. I would need to think about it. I’m not a fan of jumping into the unknown and this job has enough unknowns.” He chuckles softly “I’ve been working here for years and there are still things that shock me. It’s... weird as you would think you’d see everything by this point.”
Adelyn nodded a little, “don’t fear to step into the unknown for where there is risk there is risk, there is a reward.” She quoted Lori Hard before taking a sip of her coffee, “Should we head back to the hotel to get the case report done?” She asked
He nods as he looks outside “yeah we should most definitely head back there” he nods “we can walk there as it’s not far if you want. Walking clears my head” he explains to her.
Adelyn nodded, “We can walk.” She smiled finishing off her coffee, she threw the cup out running a hand through her hair. She looked around the area before she looked up at Reid, she giggled a little, “You got something right..” she reached up gently wiping leftover coffee from his upper lip, “there.” She smiled warmly
He chugged his coffee quickly before throwing it away and as he did she wiped something off his lip. “Um... thank you.” He says awkwardly, not knowing what to say. He was blushing but tried to hide it. “So would you still be down for a coffee in D.C?” He asks her softly “I know a place way better than this.” He chuckles
Adelyn nodded enthusiastically, “Of course!” She smiled, she fixed her skirt before she turned on her heels, “Come on Doc.” She nodded towards the direction of the precinct.
He chuckles and follows her, making mindless conversation to get to know her a little bit better. He walked her up to her room “well you better get to sleep so you don’t miss the plane tomorrow.” He chuckles softly “I may have missed a flight or two before” he informs her with a laugh
Adelyn let out a laugh, “you? Spencer Reid?” She looked up at him, “I don’t really sleep much so it shouldn’t be a problem.” She shrugged a little sugar coating the fact that she would normally just stay awake until her body sort of crashes. It definitely was the wrong thing to do considering her line of work.
“You should sleep more” he scolds her “you don’t want to fall asleep in random locations as I learned from experience that sucks.” He chuckles. “Well I’ll see you tomorrow addy- wait I mean Adelyn. Sorry.” He apologizes to her
Adelyn rolled her eyes a bit, “I haven’t done that since freshman year in high school.” She laughed a little before she smiled looking up at him, “You can call me whatever you’d like.” She shrugged, “I personally don’t care.”
“Well goodnight A. Get sleep.” He warns as he walks himself back to his room. He shut the door and sighed, it’s been a long day for him and he was eager to lay down. He fell asleep almost minutes after his head hit the pillow
. The next morning he didn’t really want to wake up when his alarm went off but slowly did. He got all packed and even had time to get some donuts. He knocked on her door, waiting for an answer.
Adelyn smiled a little nodding as she walked over to the room she was staying in and agreed to share a room with JJ. She got an hour or two of sleep before she got up. She didn’t really have to pack much as she was getting changed for the day she heard a knock. She brushed her teeth walking over, opening the door, “Morning.” She murmured leaving the door open so he could come in
He walked in “I brought you some donuts.” He says with a smile. “Thank you” JJ says and grabs one, he honestly forgot they were sharing a room. Well at least he got a lot of donuts instead of only two. “How are you this morning?” Reid asks her
Adelyn walked into the bathroom finishing up brushing her teeth and she walked out, “Fine? You?” She offered a small smile sitting down on the bed she pulls her socks on
“Pretty okay. I don’t like to sleep in hotel rooms. The amount of germs that there is scares me” he shivers just thinking about it. “So I had to shower very quickly this morning.” He tells her.
Adelyn snorted a bit, shaking her head, “Oh lord..” she smiled looking up at him, “I cannot wait to be at home with my blankets and beer.” She sighed a bit sitting back up, she adjusted her pants, “How large are your case reports?” She asked
He nods "I don't drink very often but I can't wait to be home reading a new book. I need some relaxation time" He admits to her. "The case shouldn't be too much. I can get it done on the plane'' he shrugs. "But we are leaving soon so I should triple check my bag" He says before leaving back to his room. It wasn't long before he was taking his seat on the plane.
Adelyn smiled a little, nodding as she looked up, “Maybe you can come over after- drink coffee or some beer.” She shrugged with a shy smile. She grabbed her bags after he finished then went to the plane
He was going through some files as he quickly scanned them. Sometimes in messy cases like this he had to go and attend their court session so it's better to know than not to know. JJ looked over to Emily. "They continue to get closer and closer. Wait until Garcia hears about this.
Adelyn glanced up at Spencer every now and then. She looked through the case report rubbing her eyes, she sighed tossing the file onto the table shaking her head a bit
Reid looked up ''you okay?" He asks her softly. He knows how hard it can be to be wrong, especially on your first case in a new job, "Do you just need a break from case files?" He asks with a chuckle. He also knows that feeling.
Adelyn nodded, “I’m fine.” She sighed a bit, “No.” she shook her head a bit, “Just don’t see a point in these...we were all there we saw it, the director doesnt even fuckin glance at these unless the team fucks up.” She shrugged
“Yeah but it helps when the director tries to go after the team. It’s happened on more than one occasion and it helps us build a case for why they should leave us alone” he explains to her. “I hate doing them too but I’ve seen them come after me and my friends too much.”
Adelyn nodded a little, she grabbed the file again with a small pout on her features. She ran a hand through her hair. “I see why but it really doesn’t need to be this long.” She giggles
He chuckles “I know. I personally hate going into detail. While I remember everything, I just hate having to relive it like that.” He explains to her “I just hope they won’t need one of us to stand trial.” He tells her with a sigh “that would be the worst.”
Adelyn nodded a little she chewed on her lower lip, she finished the rest of the report after 10 minutes. Once she finished she threw the paper down with a quiet cheer.
Reid chuckled at her quiet cheer. “Just in time too. We are minutes from landing. Are you excited to sleep in your own bed again because I know I am. Those beds give me back pains.” Reid rants
Adelyn giggled a little looking up at him, “I am a bit excited. And as for that? You’re just an old man.” She smirked a bit leaning back into her seat, she stretched slightly doing a little wiggle to get comfortable
He playfully gasped and put his hand on his heart acting hurt. “How dare you tell me I’m old!” He laughs softly. “If I was so old you wouldn’t be talking to me. Nobody talks to old men. No offense Rossi.” Reid jokes. Rossi looked up hearing his name before slightly squinting at Spencer he didn’t want to become part of the conversation so he decided to just leave the comet alone.
Adelyn laughs a little, shaking her head, “Careful might have a heart attack.” She smirked teasingly, “For your information Rossi is awesome!” She giggles before gently throwing the pen she had previously written her report with at Reid
Reid chuckles as he picks it up. “You’re lucky the plane is landing.” He tells her. Soon enough the plane is on the ground. “So what are your plans for later tonight?” Reid asks her with a smile.
Adelyn giggled a little and rolled her eyes. As soon as the plane lands she unbuckles herself, “No pants, a cozy blanket, and some beer.” She smiled brightly, “What about you?” She asked collecting her things before standing up
“Making myself food and most likely a couple books.” He tells her as he grabs his bag and walks off the plane. “I definitely need some relaxing time after this case. You should come over to my apartment sometime. It’s quite cozy.” He suggests
Adelyn smiled a little grabbing her bag, she looked up at him squinting a bit, “Are you gonna murder me then cover it up since you work in the FBI?” She joked, her nose wrinkling a bit when she smiled.
JJ nudged Emily when she heard Reid mention going to his house with Adelyn a smirk on her face
He chuckles “you’ll never know if you don’t come over to my house.” He jokes back with her. “Plus I cook decently well. I can make us something to eat sometime.” He suggests. Emily chuckles “we might be watching a relationship blossom” she says to JJ
He chuckles “you’ll never know if you don’t come over to my house.” He jokes back with her. “Plus I cook decently well. I can make us something to eat sometime.” He suggests. Emily chuckles “we might be watching a relationship blossom” she says to JJ
Adelyn giggles a little, “I might have to take you up on that offer!” She smiled, “Give a time and date and I’ll be there!” She paused a moment to readjust her bag scrunching her nose a bit, “I don’t understand why you guys don’t just leave your go bags on the plane- obviously you can change it out since you’d need to do laundry but there’s really no need to lug it back and forth.” She was mostly talking to herself
Reid chuckles “my reason is germs. You don’t know what’s been on that plane.” He made an uck sound. “Well should we swap numbers or something so we can actually plan something or do you want me to find your address like a creep and send you letters. You know the old fashioned way.” He chuckles softly at his joke
Adelyn snorted a bit at his uck noise, “God you wouldn’t last a day in my house.” She shook her head a bit, she was naturally messy- but it was an organized mess...much like herself. She fished out her phone from her pocket, nearly losing her balance. She giggled a little before opening it and handing it over to Spencer, “As fun as it would be to see you do that, it would be easier and more time efficient to just exchange numbers.” She giggled
He chuckles and types in his number. “Don’t forget to text me now. Or I’ll have to go be a creepy old man.” He tells her with a smile. “Bye Addy, I’ll see you soon.” He waved and made his way to his own car. By the time he arrived home he didn’t have the energy to do much more than read and wait for Adelyn to text him.
Adelyn giggles a little and nods as she gives a small wave before she makes her way to her car. The moment she got home she went for a beer, she changed into an oversized shirt before she took out her phone. She smiled softly, taking a sip of her beer, deciding to send a message to Reid,
‘Hey there creepy old man!’ She sent the message before she started to make herself some dinner
The second his phone went off he quickly grabbed it, forgetting all about the book he was so interested in a second ago. He smiled at her text ‘hello Addy. How’s it being home after your first case?’ He asks her. He puts down the phone and gets back into his book
Adelyn heard her phone go off, she finished slicing the vegetable before she grabbed it, she wiped her hands on a rag and texted him back with a smile, ‘It feels like a treat! Little lonely but it’s a treat!’ After she hit send she went back to cooking
It felt like all night he was texting her, moving from his couch to his dining room to his bed. He didn’t put the phone down for more than five minutes at a time. He eventually fell asleep after hitting the send button.
After Adelyn had eaten her dinner she had laid in her bed, not really wanting to do anything. She had fallen asleep around 11pm which was really early for her.
The next morning she woke up with a start her alarm blaring next to her, “Jesus fuckin christ..” she mumbled hitting the snooze, she laid back down and sighed, rubbing her eyes. She cracked a small smile looking at her phone to see Spencer’s name, she picked up her phone quickly sending a good morning text
He woke up early in the morning. Doing his early routine but he wasn’t sure on if he should text her good morning. I mean would that be weird? He’s never been put in this situation before. He just tried keeping himself busy as the hours ticked by hoping she would text him. He cracked a smile when his phone went off and it was her. ‘Good morning do you maybe want to come over tonight? I can make homemade spaghetti’ he suggested and worried it was too straight forward
Adelyn got up slowly, she jumped a bit hearing her phone go off, “fuck you too..” she mumbled before she answered Spencer’s text she was slightly jumpy but that was mostly when she was at home, ‘That sounds awesome! Do you have any preferred alcohol or drink? I know you said you aren’t a big drinker but I would feel awful not bringing anything!’ After she hit send she got ready for the day, she didn’t get dressed just yet knowing she’d probably be at home all day besides when she went to Spencer’s- so why not stay comfortable?
He thought for a moment as he wasn’t a big drinker he didn’t know what he would even like to drink. ‘Surprise me’ he wrote back. He immediately got up and grabbed his shoes to rush to the store to get all the ingredients and water in case she drank too much. He also got some snacks he thought she might like and once he got home he immediately started on the meal.
Adelyn smiled a little at the text, she leaned against her counter eating a strawberry she pursed her lips before texting him back, ‘What’s the attire for tonight old man?’ She quietly giggled to herself. She went to the small corner in her kitchen dedicated to alcohol- if she wasn’t a member of the BAU she’d probably be an alcoholic by now. She chewed on her lip looking through the bottles, she pouted a bit not really sure what to choose.
‘Casual. No need to be in uncomfy dress clothes when you can just be in sweatpants and a T-shirt’ he texts back. While cooking he was going around his house cleaning, it’s been a while since he’s had someone over and he wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
Adelyn smiled softly at his text before she grabbed a bottle of wine and a bottle of whiskey not sure which he would like. She grabbed her case of beer as well before setting it aside. She walked to her room, she grabbed her phone muttering shit, ‘What time did you want me to come over at?’ She asked starting to get ready
‘How about five? The spaghetti should be close to done by then’ he tried playing it like he wasn’t nervous at all but he was freaking out as he was terrified of messing this all up. It would be so awkward to work together if that happened
Adelyn smiled a little at the text, she glanced at the clock she had about an hour or so to get ready which was more than enough time, ‘Will do! Just text me the address :)’ she stated at her closet as if it would give her all the answers
He texted her the address and then texted JJ. ‘Do girls like watermelon smelling rooms?’ He had a couple candles but they were all food scented. God he was losing his mind
JJ snorted at his text before responding to him, ‘Since when do you care? To answer your question just depends on the girl..if it’s Adelyn I would go for a peppermint smell. I noticed she had a ton of things that smelled like it’ Adelyn huffed a bit deciding ‘fuck it- I don’t need to impress him’ she grabbed her oversized T-shirt that fell near her knee had a cute duck on the front with keep calm above it, she threw her hair up into a messy bun grabbing her glasses, she looked at the clock before sliding on her crocs, then grabbing the alcohol and heading to Spencer’s

The Prodigal Daughter and the Genius: One
It’s been like a decade since I wrote a Reid fanfic, but I thought I’d dip my toes in again. So here’s a bit of a rewrite, reimagining of an older fic ReidxOriginal Character I wrote way back in 2010. Don’t be too harsh if my brain forgot some details.
-----------
Hannah pushed back her dark hair the assortment of silver bangles she wore on her wrist clinking against one another as she moved. She stared up at the building in front of her, her stomach in knots. Maybe this was a bad idea…she’d never been fond of cops after all, well these were feds in this scenario, but still.
She’d never been exactly at ease around any sort of authority figure who had the ability to apprehend her and take her freedom from her. No, it wasn’t as though she’d ever broken the law…not seriously at least…aside from the occasional joint and a speeding ticket…or two or three speeding tickets…but still she and the cops had never been bosom buddies.
Being so up close and personal to a federal building surrounded by federal agents made Hannah’s head spin and ache in the worst ways possible.
Maybe it would be smarter to just walk away and pretend she was never here. It’s not as though she gave her big sister any warning of her arrival after all, and Emily and she hadn’t really ever seen eye to eye. If she walked away right now Emily would never even know she was even in DC in the first place.
Hannah cringed knowing that she didn’t have much of a choice though. She couldn’t run away, not this time. She needed her sister. She had nowhere else to go.
Ian probably wouldn’t think to look for her here, she told herself though a taunting voice in the back of her brain argued with this idea. Ian was smarter than he looked, and leaving the way she did…he was bound to be pissed.
Her boyfriend…well she guessed it was ex boyfriend now, had been fun at first. Charming, exciting…he was loaded and he had no problem throwing gifts at her. No, it wasn’t really anything far from what she’d grown up with. Being an ambassador’s youngest child meant that she was no stranger to luxury. Still Ian had made it hard not to be charmed.
Something had changed though. Things had gotten, well… intense…dark. He’d done a 180 on her as far as his mood went.
Her once sweet doting boyfriend had become violent and moody. At first he’d just been a little controlling. Telling her what to wear, convincing her that her friends and her family didn’t understand her like he did. Then he’d gotten, violent.
It was time to check out. There was nothing like being beaten black and blue a few times to make you rethink your relationship status. To be honest even though Hannah tried to play it cool, Ian scared her. She knew deep down inside that if she stayed with him, he’d kill her eventually. Men like Ian didn’t let women leave them.
She’d tried to dump him of course. She tried to leave. She felt pathetic for staying. She wasn’t some doormat, standing by while a guy treated her like trash. The first time Ian had backhanded her she’d told him to get out of her life. He’d managed to weasel his way back into her life again though, and things had been good for a while. Then they weren’t so good. Ian always had a way of reeling her back in once she had enough.
Just dumping Ian wasn’t as easy as it sounded. Ian didn’t like being told no. Ian wasn’t the kind of guy to just sit back and let her walk away from him.
That last fight she’d had with him, his last outburst where his fists had met her body, that was the last straw. She had to get away from him.
So, Hannah had done the one thing she’d always exceeded at. She’d cleaned out her bank account, packed her bags, and disappeared.
That had been a week ago. She’d crashed in motels for a while, trying to reassess her situation. She’d come to one conclusion. She had to go somewhere safe and lie low for a while. Emily was safe.
Hannah shoved her shades back over her eyes knowing it might at least help where make up had failed to hide the bruising. It was time to drop in on her sister and seek safety for a little while. She had no choice.
Emily might not be thrilled to see her, but she really had no other better option.
========================
Emily nursed a cup of coffee her brain throbbing. Jet lag sucked. It sucked even more when your genius coworker was rattling on about whatever statistical nonsense, he’d chosen to torture everyone with today.
Usually she was a bit more interested in Reid’s rants. She’d gotten used to him after a while. For the most part the facts he shared were fascinating. She wasn’t exactly in the mood to listen to Reid explain the scientific inaccuracies he’d noticed in the science fiction movie Garcia and he’d watched this weekend though.
They’d just gotten back from a case across the country late the night before. She’d only been home less than 24 hours and her brain was aching.
She almost dropped her cup of coffee when she spotted her. It had been a few years, but she’d recognize her own flesh and blood anywhere.
Hannah stood behind Reid’s desk the young man’s back to her staring straight ahead at her sister, her stomach rolling. Here went nothing.
She spoke hoping that her voice didn’t betray her. “Hey Em.”
“Hannah?” Emily stood up causing Reid to stop his rambling, both he and Morgan taking notice of the pretty brunette who’d caught Emily’s attention.
Reid turned his chair around not helping but to watch the exchange between his coworker and their mystery guest.
Hannah took no notice of Reid or Morgan’ gaze upon her, finding the fact that she was staring at her estranged older sister in a busy office space far too awkward to take notice of any eyes on her.
She spoke trying to make a joke. “I wasn’t sure they’d let me in to see you. I didn’t even know what floor you were on or anything…I think the security guard considered frisking me when I walked in.”
Emily continued staring at her sister unsure of what to say or do. It had been a few years since she’d had any contact with Hannah. Her little sister had essentially dropped off the face of the earth.
It’d started with avoiding Emily’s calls and turning down her invitations to visit her in DC. Then Hannah had deleted her social media pages and stopped taking calls.
Emily had wanted to step in, track her sister down. The profiler in her had sensed danger. She’d held back though. It wasn’t uncommon for Hannah to disappear like this. This was the same woman who’d once decided to backpack across Europe for a month without letting anyone know about her plans. She was restless by nature. She disappeared for a bit and then popped back up when she got bored or too lonely. She was unpredictable most of the time, and to be honest a little unreliable as well.
Emily managed to speak knowing that she sounded a little accusatory. “What are you doing here?”
“Can’t a girl drop in on her sister?” Hannah blurted out cringing at Emily’s reaction. This was a bad idea, she knew she shouldn’t have come here.
Emily sighed shaking her head. “Of course, you can…I, I just wasn’t expecting you.”
Emily continued to study her sister the two women standing in an awkward silence both unaware of their audience of Reid and Morgan.
The girl standing in front of Emily looked a little rough to be honest. Hannah had always been a thin girl, but she looked almost frail. She wore a casual loose black dress covering her frame with a long gray kimono styled cardigan. Her hair was a little longer than Emily had remembered it being. Emily was sure she could spot a pair of silver earrings in her sister’s ears and the thin gold ring in her left nostril. She could also spot black ink on her wrist a hint of a tattoo she was trying to hide. Despite the red lipped smile on Hannah’s face Emily could read tension all over her. The large dark sunglasses Hannah wore made it hard to see her eyes.
Emily wasn’t the only one studying Hannah. Reid couldn’t help but to study her as well. Emily had a sister? She never mentioned a sister. Hannah didn’t look like she belonged to the Prentiss family.
She looked more like she should be working in some sort of new age shop selling candles and crystals…. not that Reid hung around those types of places, but the BAU had worked a case once where Reid and Morgan had to interview a guy that worked in one of those places.
Hannah looked like she didn’t belong in the middle of a federal building.
Reid had to admit that she was actually kind of pretty, well more than kind of. He knew most people didn’t think he noticed the opposite sex. He might be a genius but he was still a hot-blooded male.
He could admit that the woman standing in front of him was alluring. The red of her lips contrasted well with her pale skin tone, and those lips were nice, a perfect cupid’s bow. Her dark hair looked soft. It was long and worn loosely, there was a bit of a wave to it unlike Emily’s straight hair. Though Hannah’s dress was loose fitting he could definitely spot the curve of her hips and noticeable cleavage.
He felt his breath quicken, nope, probably not a good idea to admire Emily Prentiss’ apparent sister.
Emily finally broke the silence speaking up. “How long are you in town?”
“A while…I don’t really, have a place to crash right now…I just got into town this morning.” Hannah half lied, she’d gotten in last night and she was technically staying in a somewhat seedy pay by the hour motel that she had a feeling her sister would cringe at the sight of.
She took a deep breath deciding to just bite the bullet. “I actually kind of need help…can we talk?”
She paused staring down at Reid and Morgan taking her eyes off her sister for the first time since she’d arrived, Reid feeling his cheeks flush somewhat under her gaze and the realization that she had caught him gawking.
She spoke again clearly making a point that she didn’t exactly appreciate being stared at. “In private.”
Emily sighed running a hand through her hair. This was typical Hannah behavior, just show up out of nowhere and expect everyone to rearrange their life to cater to her and pick up her mess. Emily took a deep breath reminding herself she should be thankful. Sure Hannah always ran away and expected people to clean up her messes, but at least she was here now asking for help. Emily had to help out. “Just let me tell my boss I have to step away for the day.”
She stepped away Morgan fast to speak shooting Hannah an all too charming smile. “So, you’re Emily’s sister?”
Hannah shifted in place trying to keep the sarcasm out of her voice. She couldn’t help but to speak up having always relied on humor when she felt anxious. Her sarcastic tendencies had always gotten her into trouble. “That’s what the DNA test says, 100 percent a Prentiss. To be honest with you though I am still waiting for more test results before I own up to it.”
Reid was fast to speak not picking up on any sass from Hannah. “Siblings actually only share about 50 percent of the same DNA. This is mostly due to recombination. Even though siblings share familial trees their genetic code can be completely different in some areas depending on what type of DNA testing they undergo. Half siblings actually will share only 25 percent of their siblings DNA…”
Morgan spoke stopping Reid before he got too carried away. “Kid, she’s joking.”
Hannah stared at Reid almost tempted to lower her shades and get a better look at him. What planet was this guy even from? She spoke unable to stop herself. “Guess my humor isn’t universal…Sorry my smart mouth is a gift most people want me to return.”
They didn’t have a chance to continue the conversation as Emily made her way back downstairs gathering her things. “Okay, let’s go. I imagine your luggage is at a motel, since you aren’t carrying anything with you.”
Hannah cringed knowing she’d been caught in a lie. It sucked having a sister that could read you. “Yep.”
She paused turning to address the two men still staring up at her both more than curious about Emily’s never spoken of sister. “It was nice meeting you…”
“Dr. Spencer Reid, and Derek Morgan.” Morgan spoke before Reid had a chance to speak.
Hannah raised an eyebrow, Doctor? Seriously, this guy was a doctor? He didn’t look much older than her. He looked like he should be hanging out in a library, not carrying a badge and a handgun. Feds, she thought bitterly to herself, they definitely made her headache.
Reid and Morgan watched the two women disappear from sight not helping but to notice Reid was still staring straight ahead of where Hannah had been standing lost in thought.
He spoke not helping but to poke at the younger man. “Emily’s sister is pretty cute. A little different, but pretty cute.”
Reid felt his cheeks flush this comment flustering him. She was, she definitely was. He spoke pretending that he wasn’t that fascinated with, not to mention that attracted to, Emily’s little sister. “She’s not what I expected…I didn’t even know Emily had a sister.”
Morgan smirked not helping but to speak again. “You were staring pretty hard at her there Pretty Boy. You may have drooled a little bit too.”
“I need more coffee.” Reid blurted out shooting up from his desk wandering over to the breakroom. He wasn’t staring that hard, okay maybe he was.
Still, though he had to admit, Hannah Prentiss wasn’t what he’d been expecting, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t curious.

Reunited: A Spencer Reid Fanfic
I wrote the first chapter of that Reid/OC childhood best friend story I was talking about
A clear rapid tapping at the window was all it took for Spencer Reid to awaken. He reached out his thin hand blindly reaching towards the nightstand searching for his glasses in the darkened room. He was quick to flip on the small lamp sitting at his bedside, the room brightening his sleepy eyes studying the space.
He rolled his eyes ever so slightly as the tapping continued. Natalie had long ago developed a distinct way of waking him on nights like these; soft taps to his bedroom window, not loud enough to wake his mother, but certainly loud enough to interrupt Spencer’s rest. Though twelve year old Spencer’s bedroom was on the second story, eleven year old Natalie had long ago realized that the old oak tree was positioned at the perfect spot for her to climb on up and climb into Spencer’s bedroom.
Spencer pulled himself from bed quickly striding over to the window and pulling back the curtains not surprised to see a petite redhead staring back at him, her blue pajama set looking far paler under the moonlight. She gave him a small wave the bright yellow flashlight she held in her hand waving wildly.
Spencer wordlessly unlocked his bedroom door allowing her to climb inside. Natalie Greene shot Spencer a sheepish smile her blue eyes drowsy. “Sorry, I know it’s late, but she went out again...dad’s out of town, and I hate being home alone....plus, you know how she can be when she does come home. When she does come home alone she’s...ya know, loud...mean.”
Spencer let out a heavy sigh knowing just who the she Natalie was speaking of.
Spencer embraced Natalie the pale girl easily sinking into his thin arms. He managed to speak his voice soft. “You don’t have to apologize. I know how your mom is.”
Natalie’s mother wasn’t a kind woman, at least behind closed doors she wasn’t.
To be honest most of the time Spencer Reid couldn’t believe someone like Bonnie Greene had ever given birth to someone as sweet as Natalie Greene.
Bonnie Greene had never really wanted to get married nor had she wanted to have children. Natalie’s father was well off enough though that Bonnie figured it would be worth her while to marry him. He had a good job and came from a good family.
He certainly had more money than Bonnie’s drunkard of a father. She’d married for comfort and some prestige.
The marriage wasn’t a happy one of course, but somehow the marriage between Bonnie and James Greene had produced a healthy baby girl.
Natalie was the light of her father’s eye. He adored her and she adored him. Things between her mother and her weren’t so peachy though.
James Greene was forced to take plenty of overseas business trips which meant more often than not his daughter was left solely in her mother’s care, or neglect to be more precise.
Bonnie had inherited her father’s love of the drink. She’d also inherited his temper and his wandering eyes.
Natalie was an inconvenience to her mother. She tried to stay out of the way, that meant most of her time was spent next door in the Reid household.
Though Spencer Reid’s own home-life was nowhere near stable, his mother struggling with schizophrenia, constantly in and out of touch with reality, and Spencer’s father having left a few years before.
Even with Spencer’s less than peaceful home-life Natalie had found some sort of safe haven there, with Spencer.
He was her best friend, Spencer was her only friend.
Spencer would more than likely agree with that sentiment.
He’d liked Natalie from the second they’d met way back when Spencer was eight and Natalie was seven.
Her family had just moved in next door when Natalie had made her way across the lawn fascinated by the skinny boy sitting on his front porch a thick book in his lap.
It had been clear to her from the start that Spencer Reid was no ordinary boy. He was smart, beyond smart.
She’d stared at him a little dumbfounded when he’d tried to explain the complex plot of the novel he was reading, War and Peace.
Spencer had almost expected Natalie to run away from him, or at the very least call him a freak. Most people his age thought he was a freak. He didn’t really know how to relate to kids his age.
He’d long ago skipped quite a few grades and while his classmates were learning multiplication and vowels Spencer Reid was solving complex equations and reading the Odyssey.
He’d been surprised as Natalie had simply sat down on his porch pulling a worn book from the backpack she’d been wearing. She presented it to him a small shy smile crossing her lips as she spoke. “I like cookbooks. My daddy bought me this one. It’s about pastries.”
Though Spencer Reid didn’t know terribly much about cooking and Natalie Greene didn’t know too much about classic novels, they’d still become remarkably close as the years had gone by.
Spencer let out a heavy sigh knowing that his question was useless. He already knew just what Natalie’s answer would be. “Why don’t you tell your dad what your mom’s been doing? She’s wrong Natalie...she shouldn’t hit you, or be so cruel. She shouldn’t bring weird drunk guys home from the bar either. She’s supposed to protect you.”
Natalie shook her head far too stubborn to follow Spencer’s advice. “Dad has been home less and less. When he is home all they do is fight. If I tell him he’ll just leave and take me with him...he might take me back to Kansas with him.”
Spencer frowned wanting to argue that Kansas would be better than living with her mother, but he held it in.
He knew what Natalie was trying to say; going to Kansas didn’t just mean leaving her mother, it meant leaving Spencer Reid behind.
He held back the desire to beg Natalie to tell someone, anyone about her home-life. He could admit that the thought of Natalie’s father taking Natalie away scared him. The idea of Natalie leaving scared him.
He knew it was selfish, but he didn’t want her to go anywhere. She was his best friend. She was his only friend in the entire world.
If she went to Kansas he’d probably never get to see her ever again.
He could keep her safe, Spencer told himself. He could be like the knights in the stories his mother read to him. He could keep the princess safe from the dragons.
He finally spoke the two reluctantly breaking their embrace. “We should get some sleep.”
Natalie easily sank into Spencer’s cramped twin bed having nowhere to lie but in her best friend’s arms.
She didn’t mind it to be honest, Spencer always had the strangest way of making her feel safe.
He flipped off the lights Natalie never complaining about the glow of small nightlight Spencer kept on his desk top. She never told him he was too old to be scared of the dark.
She only told him he was brave, and strong, and good. Spencer told her the same.
Spencer had assumed Natalie had fallen asleep given that her breathing seemed to have evened out her movements in his arms stilling.
He almost jumped as Natalie spoke her voice soft. “I don’t know why people get married, all they do is hurt each other.”
“I don’t think that anyone gets married meaning to hurt each other...I think sometimes grown ups are just messy...they get upset with each other and forget how to say sorry.” Spencer explained holding back the desire to fill Natalie in with the newest statistics on divorce in the United States.
Though Natalie never complained about his endless knowledge and his tendency to share it, Spencer knew that now wasn’t the time for statistics.
Natalie shook her head a frown crossing her features. “I don’t want to hurt people. I don’t want to forget how to say sorry. I don’t want to be like my mom.”
“You wouldn’t. I don’t think you’ll ever be anything like your mom.” Spencer reassured her his hold on her tightening.
“How do you know though? I mean...what if I am just like her?” Natalie asked her voice tiny, weak. The sound making Spencer’s heart ache.
“I just know, there’s no way you’re like her. You’re too sweet, and you care too much.” Spencer reassured her.
He spoke again after a few moments of silence wanting to at least give her some sort of comfort though he wasn’t entirely sure he believed his own words. “I think that people get married because they genuinely want to make each other happy. I think that’s what’s supposed to happen, when you’re lucky. When you’re lucky you marry your best friend and you make each other happy forever.”
Natalie spoke snuggling under the blankets all the more exhaustion slowly attempting to win out over her anxieties. “You’re my best friend. I think if I was going to marry anyone it would probably be you. I think we could make each other happy forever.”
Spencer felt his cheeks flush thankful that the nightlight in his room didn’t provide enough light to reveal his pink cheeks. He spoke surprised by how simple the answer seemed. “We could get married someday....when we’re old enough. You’re my best friend too.”
Natalie managed to give his cheek a soft peck as her eyes drifted shut sleep winning out over the desire to stay awake just a little longer.
Spencer laid in silence staring up at the ceiling his overactive brain going a mile a second.
Natalie would marry him? Natalie Greene would want to marry him?
Spencer felt a sleepy smile cross his lips. Natalie Greene would marry him.
…..........................................................................
Dr. Spencer Reid groaned the shrill beep of his alarm pulling him from a rare pleasant dream.
He rolled over onto his back staring up at the ceiling wishing he could will himself back to sleep, and more importantly back to his memories of her.
Natalie Greene haunted his dreams more often that Spencer Reid would like to admit.
He wasn’t entirely sure that haunting was the right terminology though.
The dreams were more memories than anything, and they usually were good memories.
Spencer frowned his heart experiencing that yearning it usually suffered through on mornings like this.
Spencer Reid had never married Natalie Greene.
In fact Spencer Reid hadn’t spoken to Natalie Greene in person since he was eighteen years old.
He’d left Vegas with promises he’d come back for her, but he’d never manage to keep those promises.
They’d tried hard to keep in touch; letters and phone calls and birthday cards.
As time had gone on though those letters and cards had become rarer and rarer, and soon enough the phone calls had become non existent.
Spencer Reid had heard people mention the “one who got away” before.
For Spencer the one who got away would always be Natalie Greene.
Though they’d never crossed the line beyond friendship aside from a few clumsy kisses and a couple of awkward sexual experiences in their teens. It had never crossed beyond friends who trusted one another enough to experiment. Spencer had spent more than enough time kicking himself for never admitting the truth.
The truth was he was absolutely madly in love with Natalie Greene, but he wasn’t brave enough to tell her.
He wished things could have been different.
Sometimes he liked to imagine how different his life would have been if he’d confessed his feelings to Natalie.
He liked to think that he would have been a bit more patient when it came to leaving Vegas for good. He would have stuck around a year longer, waiting for then seventeen-year-old Natalie to turn eighteen.
The second she’d turned eighteen he would have taken her with him, leaving Vegas behind, leaving her mother behind.
He liked to think he still would have joined the FBI and then the BAU, but this time he would have had Natalie by his side to support him as he went through training.
She would have been there to support him and hold his hand through all the trauma. She would have kept him so strong.
He liked to imagine that he would have made her feel just as strong. He would have supported her as she opened her own bakery. They would have gotten an apartment above the bakery and she would have made the best pastries in D.C.
Spencer would have proposed to her. He would have made good on that promise he’d made her when they were kids.
He would have married her and they would have taken care of one another.
They maybe would have had some kids too, a boy and a girl with her freckles and his brown hair. Their kids would have had her sweet smile and her kind heart and they would have been intelligent like him and loyal.
Natalie and Spencer could have been so happy.
Spencer cringed his alarm going off pulling him from his daydream, one he’d allowed himself to indulge in far too often for his own good.
He pulled himself from bed freshening up and dressing quickly.
At least he had enough time to stop at the coffee shop not far from the metro station he took on his way to the BAU.
He managed to order himself a cup of coffee to go sure to grab plenty of sugar packets.
He was a bit distracted checking his messages on his cell rolling his eyes at the messages he’d purposely ignored from Morgan the night before attempting to get him out on the town.
He was so distracted by his phone that he collided with her.
Spencer felt his cheeks flush relieved that he hadn’t spilled his coffee on her, however, he did managed to cause the redhead standing in front of him to drop the planner she’d been carrying, all the papers she’d stored loosely within it falling to the coffee shop’s floor.
He dropped down to his knees scrambling to help her pick up the mess. The apologies spilling from his lips. “I am so sorry. I should have been paying more attention.”
It wasn’t until he peered up at her, her blue eyes widening as she made eye contact with him.
Recognition crossed both their features Spencer almost disbelieving his words. “Natalie?”
She took him by shock embracing him practically knocking him over in the process not caring that their collision and now their embrace had drawn a few curious eyes of the other coffee shop patrons. “Spencer Reid? It’s really you? I can’t believe it’s really you.”
She pulled back resting a delicate hand against his cheek the dark blue of her nail polish sticking out against his pale skin. She smiled up at him and it almost felt as though no time had passed since they’d last seen one another.
Natalie managed to speak breaking the spell her eyes a bit damp as she stared up at the man in front of her. He’d grown so much. He was so different from the sorrowful teenage boy who had shared a tearful final goodbye with her on her front porch all those years ago.
“It’s been so long.”
“It really has.” Spencer spoke studying her. She had changed, though he knew that was a silly thought.
It had been years since they’d seen one another last. They were no longer teenagers.
She was still beautiful, that much hadn’t changed. Her hair was still that dark shade of red Spencer had always adored and her eyes were still that same pretty blue. Her smile was still wide and sweet, though her teeth were now missing the braces she’d had when she was seventeen.
She peered down at his jacket the warmer weather now meaning Spencer could leave his apartment sans coat. She spoke as she spotted the name tag hanging from his suit jacket. Though the lettering was small and the picture was of a much younger Reid she still recognized what this name tag meant. “You joined the FBI? I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised...you were always determined to meet your goals....even when we were kids.”
“I did, what about you? Do you own your own bakery yet?” Spencer blurted out unable to stop himself from practically glowing with pride at her comment.
She gave him a small sheepish smile similar to the smiles she would shoot his way all those years ago when she’d sneak into his bedroom window. “Not the owner...I’ve actually been kind of in and out of the business...lately I’m back in. I found a job at a nice place not far from here. I’ve only been in town for a few months. My Aunt Kay actually moved here a few years ago, a friend of hers had an opening at his bakery so I took it.”
Spencer opened his mouth wanting to know more, he wanted to know everything.
He was interrupted though as Natalie’s cell phone began to chime she reluctantly answering it.
He watched her speak to whoever was on the other end of the line trying to stop his heart from cracking as he took in her words. “Yeah, I know...I’m on the way. I’ll be there soon baby. I promise.”
Baby?
Of course, she’d moved on with her life.
He shouldn’t be surprised. He had no right to feel heartbroken, Spencer told himself.
Natalie gave him a small smile as she hung up. “I gotta go. We should catch up though, here let me see your cell.”
Spencer pushed back his heartache handing over his cell phone allowing Natalie to open up his contacts and type in her number.
She handed it back to him pressing a kiss to his cheek. “You better call me Spencer. I am expecting a call from you sooner than later.”
“I will...I’ll call.” Spencer replied shoving down any disappointment over the very real possibility of her having a boyfriend already.
He watched her stand up and walk away she giving him a final wave as she left the coffee shop.
Spencer stared down at his phone a heavy sigh leaving his lips.
It was just his luck, the one who got away came back into his life and she was already taken.
He pushed back his sorrow telling himself that it didn’t matter.
Even if Natalie had someone new, he couldn’t bare to lose her again.
Spencer Reid would do what it took to keep Natalie Greene in his life, even if he had to share her with someone else.
…....................................................
Natalie sighed running a hand through her hair trying to push back the excitement coursing through her veins.
When she’d decided to move to the area she had almost hoped that there would be some small minuscule chance she would cross paths with Spencer Reid.
She knew it might sound creepy to some, but she’d maybe kept tabs on Spencer Reid through the years.
No she didn’t actively seek him out. She wasn’t some nutball stalker collecting articles about her old friend.
She’d just googled him once or twice throughout the years. She’d been impressed with what she’d found, though she wasn’t surprised.
She’d known from the second she’d met Spencer Reid that he was destined for amazing things.
He was back in her life and Natalie couldn’t be more excited.
She’d missed him so much, more than she allowed herself to fully think about as the years had gone by.
She pushed him from her mind turning to the task at hand as she made her way to the elevator taking the ride up to the fifth floor.
She knocked on the familiar door it opening to reveal the only other person in this world to have her heart.
Mason stared up at her his eyes identical to Natalie’s own, his arms reaching for his mother. Natalie scooped him up a chuckle leaving her lips. “You’re getting too big for this baby.”
“Nuh-uh.” Mason insisted shaking his head as Natalie pressed her lips to his cheek.
He was her world, Mason Greene was the best thing that had ever happened to Natalie even if his father hadn’t been the one for her.
She gave him a small smile gently placing him back down and ruffling his dark hair. She reached into her messenger bag pulling out a worn gray stuffed animal. “See I brought Mr. Bunny. I’m sorry you left him in my car.”
A familiar voice sounded out the voice aged and worn from years spent smoking in her youth. “I’m sorry I had to call. He insisted.”
Natalie gave her aunt a small smile shaking her head. “It’s alright. A mother’s work never ends.”
Kay eyed her niece spotting the starry look in her eyes. “That must have been some cup of coffee you went out to get.”
Natalie gave her aunt a small smile resisted the urge to gush over Spencer Reid. That could wait.
Natalie spoke trying to play it cool even though her heart was still beating so fast, so overjoyed with this mornings events. “Yep, it was. Probably the best coffee I’ve had in a while.”

part one
chapter two:
Delaney woke with puffy eyes to her alarm at her bedside table. Shooting up from her sleeping position, she turned the loud alarm off and slipped out of the covers. She dug through her duffel bag to find her toiletries and she got in the shower, washing her hair and body with her soaps she brought from home.
She inhaled the relaxing scents of her floral soaps and stepped out when she was satisfied. Delaney looked in the mirror to find that her eyes were still slightly puffy and bloodshot. God, she looked like shit. Hurriedly, she combed and dried her hair, curling the ends. She put on minimal makeup, but enough to cover her heavy eyes.
Delaney stepped into a periwinkle pencil skirt and a fuzzy white sweater. She slipped into white heels and tied her hair back with a ribbon. Feeling like herself again, she let out a determined sigh and packed her things in her bag. Right as she was getting ready to leave, she heard a knock on her door. She opened it and found Spencer standing there.
He gave her a nervous smile and held out a travel cup. It smelled like coffee, which made Delaney smile. He had on a brown sweater with a burgundy tie and a white button-up. His hair was endearingly messy and curly and his eyes were bleary with sleep. She took the cup and closed her door behind her.
“Hey, thank you.” She smiled at him, taking a sip.
“Y-yeah. Of course.” He replied, twiddling with his fingers nervously.
“Reid, I’m sorry about last night. I wasn’t in a good state of mind and it was sweet of you to come to check on me. I-I’m not used to people, um, caring enough to check on me. So, thank you.” Delaney said, looking deep into his hazel eyes.
Spencer didn’t even process what was happening until Delaney’s arms were around his middle and her head was resting on his chest. She smelled like flowers and seemed to fit so perfectly against him. He wrapped his arms around her and set his chin on top of her head. He waited for her to let go of him first. She didn’t for at least a minute.
When Delaney pulled away, she had a small smile on her face as she wrapped her arm around his. Spencer was a good guy. She didn’t want to push him away as she did to a lot of people. Like she had the night before.
“You’re a good friend.” She smiled up at him, pulling him towards the elevators.
Spencer just let her pull him with a dazed expression. He wanted to ask her about the night before but decided that she should be the one to tell him. They stood in silence as they rode down to the lobby.
“So, what are we going to be doing today? Figuring out a geographical profile? I can help you with that.” Delaney said, her demeanor changing as she shifted into work mode.
“Yeah, Hotch will probably have us working on the geographical profile and everyone else will be trying to figure out the unsub’s identity,” Spencer said as the elevator door opened.
Delaney let go of his arm and walked over to the gathered members of their team. She looked back and gestures for Spencer to come faster. He grinned and picked up his pace, standing beside her as Hotch came over to the group.
“Okay, everyone. We’re all going to the station now. Wilmer, Reid, I want you two working on the geographical profile. Morgan, Rossi, I want you two to check out the other bars the victims were found at, maybe try to get some more information on the unsub. Prentiss, JJ, and I will interview the families of the victims. Everyone clear on their assignments?” Hotch said, looking around at the group.
Everyone nodded and piled into the SUV’s. Delaney was squished between Prentiss and Spencer, Hotch and Rossi in the front.
“How was your night, Wilmer?” Emily asked from beside her.
“Pretty good. I was exhausted and fell asleep quickly. How was yours?” Delaney asked her politely.
“Oh, you know. JJ snores and was up talking to Henry until midnight. The usual.” Emily grinned playfully.
Delaney realized that everyone else probably had a roommate. Delaney was simultaneously glad that she didn’t have one but sad that she didn’t have one. She looked over at Spencer curiously.
“Who are you rooming with, Reid?” She asked curiously.
“Morgan.” He said, shrugging his shoulders lightly.
“Oh, that must be fun. Does Morgan snore, too?” Delaney asked with a smile.
“From past experience of rooming with Morgan, yes, Wilmer, he does snore,” Rossi said from the passenger seat.
Delaney laughed lightheartedly. Spencer looked over at her with a wide grin on his face. Her laugh was extremely contagious and, soon enough, everyone in the car was laughing at Morgan’s expense. Spencer enjoyed how easily Delaney seemed to be fitting in with the team. Even Hotch was cracking a smile as Delaney laughed.
“So, how are you enjoying your first case, Wilmer?” Emily asked once their laughter died down.
“I like it. I’m excited to get to work with the genius today in his element.” Delaney bumped her shoulder into Spencer’s.
Spencer just rolled his eyes as his cheeks turned pink. Prentiss didn’t miss his reaction to Delaney. She met eyes with him over Delaney’s head and smirked knowingly at him. His eyes widened as he shook his head at her. She stifled a laugh and put her hands up, vowing not to say anything to embarrass him. Rossi met her eyes in the rearview mirror, both of them looking amused.
They got to the station and split up, Spencer and Delaney spreading out a map on their evidence board while the rest of the team went their separate ways. Delaney stepped out of her heels as the two of them started working on the logistics of the map. She marked where each girl was found and the two of them examined it. Spencer’s mind seemed to be running a mile a minute, looking between the markings.
Delaney was doing the same and both of them seemed to come to the same conclusion at the same time. The unsub was making his way around Atlanta in a circular shape. Delaney went to the map and circled the area that he was avoiding. He had a clear comfort zone and there were only a few bars he had left to hit before he completed the circle.
“He’s got to live in this area and if we’re right, he’s going to hit this bar next,” Delaney said, pointing at a mark on the map with her marker.
“Yeah, let’s call Hotch and see if they’ve found anything on the unsub’s identity,” Spencer said, already pulling his phone out and dialing the number.
Hotch picked up and informed them that they caught the unsub on one of the cameras in the bar. Hotch had sent the video to Garcia, who was soon talking to them through a group call. Garcia informed them that the man in the footage’s name was Damien Reynolds, who was a 27-year-old man who had a past girlfriend that he was engaged to but eventually broke up with him due to his violent behavior towards her. She’d been recently married a month ago to another man and moved away.
“She got married right around the time the killings started,” Delaney said, the case slowly starting to come together.
“And based on the geographical profile Wilmer and I came up with, this is the bar he’s going to be hitting next,” Spencer said, pointing to the spot on the map to Garcia on the screen.
“Ah, yes, pretty boy, and his address is directly in the center of the kill zone,” Garcia said, sending them the address.
“We’ll come back to the station now and discuss everything we’ve found. Good work everyone.” Hotch said and hung up.
Spencer and Delaney high-fived each other with big grins. They held onto each other’s hands for a beat too long and quickly let each other go. Both of them had flushed cheeks and Delaney cleared her throat with a small smile.
“I’m gonna go get some more coffee. You want some?” She asked him, slipping her shoes back on.
“Yeah, thank you,” Spencer said, still trying to control his flustered state.
“Wait, let me guess how you take it. Hmm, what would a genius drink with his coffee? Black? No, five tablespoons of sugar?” Delaney asked, a teasing smile coming over her face.
“Just two tablespoons, please.” He said, unable to keep a straight face.
“Sure thing, doctor.” She winked and walked out of the room.
She walked over to the coffee machine and poured two cups, obliging Spencer’s request of two tablespoons to his and adding four tablespoons to hers and a splash of creamer. She didn’t like coffee all that much if she was honest, but she needed the energy. As she was stirring hers, an officer came over to her. He was probably in his 20’s, blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked like a Ken doll. He gave her a charming smile as he leaned against the counter.
“Hey, I’m Will. Delaney, right? You’re with the BAU.” The officer said, seemingly already knowing her.
“Uh, yeah. Agent Wilmer.” She said with a polite smile, holding her hand out for him to shake.
“You don’t seem old enough to be in the FBI. Tell me, Wilmer, how old are you?” He asked, holding her hand and pulling her a little closer.
She widened her eyes and gently pulled her hand away from him. This guy obviously didn’t see a lot of young women at his work, considering that most of their department were men.
“All you need to know is that I’m old enough to be in the BAU and the FBI. It was nice meeting you, Will.” She said, stepping away from him.
“Hey, do you guys ever get a break? Usually, after work, my buddies and I go out for a drink. Maybe you’d like to join us?” He asked, stepping closer to her again.
Delaney raised an unamused eyebrow at him. He didn’t seriously think she would consider going out for a drink with him and his friends, right? She had just got here and had serious work to do.
“No, I’m sorry. Unfortunately, there are women being murdered right now and my team is working hard to figure out who’s doing it. I don’t have time to get a drink.” She said sharply, grabbing the coffees and walking away from him.
She heard other officers snickering at their friend, obviously amused by her rejection. Delaney’s cheeks were flushed with frustration as she walked back into the conference room and shut the door a little too forcefully. Spencer seemed to have been watching the whole time and raised his eyebrows when she set down the coffees with a sigh.
“You okay? I saw that officer come up to you.” Spencer said, his eyes dark with seriousness.
“Men think they have the right to come up and ask women on dates whenever they please. I’ve never spoken a word to that guy and yet he thought I would just say yes to getting drinks with him and his pig friends.” Delaney said, looking down at her hands and angrily picking her nails.
“Hey, stop that. Just ignore them, alright? Considering the work we’ve accomplished today, we should only be here another day or two.” Spencer said, grabbing her hands to stop her from picking at her skin.
Delaney sighed and looked up at him. His eyes were so comforting as she stared into them that she believed anything he said. She slowly nodded and picked up her coffee. He let go of her hands and looked out the window at that cop. He was watching them in the conference room and Spencer glared harshly at him. The cop quickly looked away and seemingly got back to work.
The team got there shortly after that and they all discussed the possibilities of where and when the unsub would strike. They went over all the facts for hours until it started getting dark out. Garcia sent a picture of Damien’s ex-girlfriend, and sure enough, she was small and blonde. As all of them sat at the round table, Hotch and Rossi were talking quietly together.
Hotch cleared his throat and looked at Delaney. She shifted in her seat as her eyes widened slightly.
“Rossi and I came up with a plan that involves you, Wilmer.” He said hesitantly, obviously worried about Delaney’s reaction.
“Okay?” She asked uneasily, having a feeling of where this was going.
“We want you to be bait for the unsub tonight. You will be wired and we’ll have eyes on you the whole time. We wouldn’t ask you to do this if it wasn’t important.” Hotch said.
“Woah, woah. You want her to lure in the unsub?” Spencer asked incredulously. “It’s her first case!”
“Yes, but she’ll be completely safe. She will never be alone and it could be a good chance for us to catch him.” Rossi said.
“I’ll do it,” Delaney said before anyone could protest it further.
“What? Delaney—” Spencer protested.
She gave him a look and he shut his mouth. Prentiss and JJ looked at each other with wide eyes, matching grins spreading across their faces. No one had shut him up like that before. The girls were amused and pretty impressed by Delaney’s ability.
“Okay, we need to start getting you ready. Reid, you and Wilmer have the bar you think the unsub will hit next, right?” Hotch asked while waving Delaney over.
Spencer nodded and Delaney stood from her seat and walked over to Hotch. He had one of his very serious expressions, his eyebrows drawn together.
“You don’t have to do this. I know you want to prove yourself to us but you don’t have to if you don’t feel comfortable.”
“I want to do this. If I can help us catch the unsub, why wouldn’t I do it?” Delaney said.
Hotch gave her a small grin and patted her shoulder.
“Do you have clothes that you could wear to the bar tonight? The unsub obviously likes girls who are dressed very feminine, so if you have a dress or something that would be best.”
“Yes, I can do that. Give me 20 minutes at the hotel and I’ll be ready to go.” Delaney said with determination.
“Alright, I’ll have JJ come with you and help you at the hotel,” Hotch said, waving JJ over to them.
JJ listened to Hotch’s orders and they were soon driving back to the hotel. JJ and Delaney walked into her room as she kicked her shoes off and JJ helped her look through her clothes. Rifling through her bag, JJ pulled out a tight black dress Delaney had brought in case the team went out to dinner. She always brought outfits for every occasion, she had a bad habit of overpacking. Delaney slipped it on, untangling the spaghetti straps, and pulling it down. It was shorter than something she’d usually wear at work and she felt slightly exposed in it. She slipped her feet into black heels with straps and put on some hoop earrings. Delaney quickly parted her hair down the middle and JJ helped her ruffle it around and spray it with some hairspray.
Delaney pulled out her makeup bag and leaned close to the mirror, applying smoky black eyeliner and more mascara and blush. She put on red lipstick and deemed herself ready. With a quick spritz of perfume, she packed her things back in her bag and walked back out. JJ was waiting on her bed and smiled at her as she walked out.
“Damien’s not going to be able to resist you.” She said with a sly smile.
“Thanks, JJ,” Delaney said with a smile.
The girls got in the car and made their way back to the station. As they drove, Delaney felt a question rising in her. She looked over at JJ and couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“Hey, JJ?” She asked quietly.
JJ looked over at her with questioning eyes.
“Do you… ever get hit on by men? Like men working with you?” She asked hesitantly.
“All the time,” JJ said with a smile.
“How do you deal with it? I mean, a police officer came over to me today and just asked me to have a drink with him tonight. Just like that.” Delaney said, still frustrated by her encounter from earlier that day.
“Delaney, you’re young and beautiful and smarter than all of those men in the police station. They’re all going to be trying to get under your skin as long as you’re here. I’ve had to deal with it my whole career and the easiest thing you can do is just beat them at their own game. Use your intelligence and your beauty to put them in their place.” JJ said, glancing over at Delaney.
Delaney nodded and thought over her words. Just put them in their place.
“Okay. Thanks, JJ.” She said as they pulled into the police station.
“Anytime, kid.” She patted Delaney’s head and they got out of the car.
The girls made their way inside and Delaney immediately saw Will sitting at his desk. His mouth fell open when he saw her and she waved at him with a smirk. Most of the police officers followed her with their eyes and she tried to hold back a smile. Hotch had told her to look ready so she had to pull all the stops.
When they walked back into the conference room, the conversation stopped. Delaney nervously walked over to the table after JJ. She locked eyes with Spencer, who blushed and looked down.
“Too much?” She said with a smile.
“Damn, girl, you look good.” Morgan whistled with a smirk on his face.
Delaney smirked back and felt confidence surge in her chest. Some of the officers came over to see what was going on and why Delaney was dressed like that.
“Here, get yourself wired and we’ll get ready to leave. Spencer, you have the bar?” Hotch said, handing Delaney her wire.
“Huh? Oh, uh, yeah. He’s heading across the city in a circle, hitting every bar he comes across. If we’re right, he’ll be going to this one next.” Spencer pointed to a dot on his map that everyone looked at.
“Okay, everyone knows what to do. Delaney, I’ll have Reid brief you on what you need to do.” Hotch said, walking over to the officers gathered around.
Delaney walked over to Spencer, who was avoiding eye contact with her. She found it quite endearing as she sat next to him. He was fumbling with his tie as she wired herself.
“Okay, so you’re going to just act natural and sit at the bar for most of the night. Maybe get up and walk around but keep yourself visible to most people. We want the unsub to notice you and try to lure you out of the bar. You’ll need to keep us updated. I’ll be inside and most people will be outside waiting for you two to come out.” Spencer explained.
Delaney nodded and finished getting wired. She grabbed her phone and wallet, looking around at everyone. Her heart was beating quickly in her chest. If things went as planned tonight, she would be staring down a serial killer in a few hours. Possibly flirting with one.
“Ready?” Spencer asked, noticing her go off in her head.
“Yes. Ready as I’ll ever be.” Delaney said, forcing a smile on her face.
She walked out of the conference room with Emily and JJ, the officers still gawking at her as they passed. JJ gave her a look and winked, making Delaney smile. She just looked away from the officers and got in the car. Hotch and Rossi were in the front of the car as Delaney and Spencer slid in the backseat. She twiddled her fingers as they made their way to the bar. It was already dark out when they arrived and the bar was crowded.
“Okay, Wilmer, you’re going to tell the unsub that your name is Carly Harris. You’re 23 and you work as a secretary. Keep him talking for as long as possible. Remember that he’s young with dark brown hair. He’ll be charismatic and flirty.” Hotch prepped her.
“Got it.” Delaney nodded.
“Good luck, kid. You can do this.” Rossi smiled as Delaney got out of the car.
She just nodded and made her way into the bar, quickly showing her ID to the bouncer and walking in. Immediately she looked around for the unsub. No one caught her attention so she went up to the bar and sat down. She ordered a glass of wine reluctantly. She didn’t like alcohol very much and was pretty sensitive to its effects. She took small sips as she slowly looked around, trying not to look too interested.
Every once in a while she’d update the team through her wire, saying that she didn’t see anyone suspicious.
She spotted Spencer standing in a corner. He was watching her like a hawk and she hid her smile with her glass. She was too busy thinking about Spencer that she barely noticed a man come sit beside her. It was Damien Reynolds. She whispered in her wire that he was there. Hotch told her to act natural.
“Hello there.” He said with a smooth voice.
Delaney looked over at him. He had dark brown hair and a wide grin. Her heart started pounding in her chest as he looked over her body.
“Hello.” She said with a sultry smile.
“What’s your name, pretty thing?” He asked, leaning closer to her.
“Carly. What’s yours?” She allowed him to get closer and forced her body to face his.
“Damien. Damien Reynolds. It’s very nice to meet you, Carly.” He said, holding his hand out to her.
“You too, Mr. Reynolds.” She shook it with a smirk, knowing that the team would be on high alert right at that moment.
“Are you here with anyone, Carly?” He asked, not letting go of her hand.
“No.” She sighed and pretended to look devastated with a pout. “I’m all alone tonight.”
“Do you want to change that?” He asked with a glint in his eye.
“What did you have in mind?” Delaney asked eagerly, leaning forward on her elbows to get closer to him.
“Come with me.” He pulled her hand a little too forcefully, but she ignored it.
Her heart was pounding. Hotch said something in her ear as Damien pulled her somewhere in the bar.
“Wilmer, where is he taking you?” Hotch asked urgently in her ear.
“I’m not sure,” Delaney whispered.
Damien looked back at her curiously, wondering what she’d said. She just smiled sweetly, trying to hide her fear. He wasn’t taking her outside as he had with his previous victims. She quickly realized it was a storage closet.
“A storage closet?” She pretended to ask Damien but was really informing her team where she was.
Damien hummed in reply as he shut them in and locked the door. Delaney tried to control her breathing as he turned to her with animalistic eyes. He backed her up against a wall and started kissing down her neck. Delaney was trying to control her panicked breaths. Damien grabbed her waist and started kissing her lips. She forced herself to kiss him back when she felt one of his hands leaving her waist and coming behind his back.
Her breath was coming quickly as she was having flashbacks to that party. She saw the glint of a knife and quickly kicked her knee out to hit his groin. He doubled over with a groan and she punched out at his nose, blood quickly pouring out of it as he seethed at her.
“You bitch!” He screamed, lunging at her and hitting her over the head with the back of the knife.
Delaney cried out as she fell. He kicked her in the ribs and she groaned again. Hotch was practically yelling in her ear but she couldn’t see anything as Damien kicked her again and brought his knife up. He slashed at her arm, drawing a deep cut. She managed to scrape her nails across his arm, drawing blood and grabbing at his knife. She grabbed it and slashed all the way across his stomach. Delaney’s vision was blurring as she heard the door being kicked open. Damien’s eyes went feral when he saw FBI vests. He looked over at the window in the closet and opened it, climbing out right as Morgan and Hotch came in. His knife was still in Delaney’s hand, his blood dripping off the blade.
Morgan ran to the window and tried to shoot, but Damien was already gone. Delaney cried out in pain and Spencer came in, looking down at her with wide eyes. He quickly leaned down and helped her up, wrapping her uninjured arm around his shoulders. Delaney whimpered quietly and he looked down at her with panicked eyes.
“He got away!” Morgan said angrily.
Spencer wasn’t even paying attention to what happened with the unsub. He was looking down as Delaney seemed to be gaining strength. She let go of Spencer and rushed out of the closet, her breath moving too fast for her to properly breathe. She vaguely heard Spencer yelling at Hotch and Hotch responding.
“We need medical here now,” Hotch said urgently in his wire, his voice ringing through Delaney’s ear.
She’d made it outside and tried to control her breathing. Too much was happening. Memories were consuming her brain as she leaned against the building, sliding down in a crouched position. She didn’t even process the pain in her ribs or the blood sliding down her arm. All she could do was bury her face in her knees and try to get rid of her memories. As she sat there, she felt a hand rest on her back.
She looked up in surprise and found Spencer staring at her with worried eyes. She felt her tears slipping down her cheeks and his fingers slowly wiped them away. Delaney wasn’t sure what to do, she hadn’t had anyone do this to her before. His touch was so light and tender that it made her heart contract.
“Delaney, the ambulance is here. Can you stand so we can get you taken care of? Please?” He asked with a gentle voice.
She nodded, Spencer grabbing her hands to help her up from her crouched position. Delaney let him lead her towards the back of the ambulance where some doctors waited for her. They had her sit down as they examined her and wrapped her arm tightly in gauze. After examining her, they said she’d need to come in to get stitches and meds for her bruised ribs.
“Can’t I just take some Tylenol and get more gauze for this?” Delaney asked, not wanting to go to the hospital and stay there alone.
“Wilmer, you have a huge cut down your arm and a possible concussion. You need to go to the hospital.” Hotch said sternly.
“But we were so close. I-I want to help you get him.” Delaney said desperately.
“Kid, you’ve more than proven yourself to us. It’ll be easy now. You cut a gash through his stomach and probably broke his nose. He’s not going to get very far.” Rossi said, petting her head gently. “Do you want one of us to stay with you?”
“No, you should all be out there trying to get him. I-I’ll be fine.” She said, forcing a reassuring smile on her face.
“No way. I’ll stay with her. Everyone else should go search for Reynolds.” Spencer said, giving Delaney a look that meant she didn’t have a choice.
“Alright, thank you, Reid. Call us with updates.” Hotch said, then turned to Delaney. “You kicked his ass. Good work, Wilmer.”
Delaney tried not to beam but nodded her head at him. He squeezed her shoulder gently and walked away with Rossi. JJ and Emily came over to check that she was okay and then quickly hugged her as she was put on a gurney in the back of the ambulance. Spencer followed her and sat next to her, gently taking her hand.
“You didn’t have to come with me, Spencer. I’ll be okay.” Delaney said, feeling extremely tired as she lay on the gurney.
“Yeah, right. Be as stubborn as you want, but there was no way I was going to leave you. You don’t need to tell me whatever it is that’s been bugging you, but I do know that the unsub triggered it tonight. And I’m not leaving you alone when you’re in that state.” Spencer said sternly, looking her directly in the eyes.
Delaney gave him a soft smile, her eyelids suddenly heavy. The doctor put an IV in her arm and it felt cold as fluids pumped through her.
“You’re… a good guy, genius.” She mumbled as her eyes shut.
She faintly heard Spencer chuckle before she passed out.

newbie (spencer reidxOC!) part 3
a/n: sooo some angst in this one & learning more about delaney’s past ooooohhhh and some fluff w spence of course
warnings: death, angst, sadness lol
part 1 part 2
chapter three:
When Delaney woke, she heard a heart monitor gently beeping and her head was pounding. She looked around and found an empty room. Her heart dropped to her stomach with disappointment. Hadn’t Spencer stayed with her? Had she hallucinated everything? Did the team leave without her?
As her mind was whirring with possibilities, a familiar head of curls walked into her room. He was holding a cup of coffee, of course. When he noticed that Delaney was awake his eyes brightened.
“You’re awake! God, Delaney, you seriously downplayed your injuries. You thought you were going to get away with pain meds and some gauze? They had to use 9 stitches on your arm and you have a mild concussion. Three of your ribs were badly bruised and your lower back is bruised.” Spencer rambled, his voice disbelieving at her behavior.
“There’s no way that’s true.” Delaney scoffed.
“Oh, it’s true, pretty girl.” Another voice said from the doorway of her room.
Morgan was standing there, that smirk on his face. Behind him was the rest of the team, all of them wearing smiles. They walked in and took different spots around her room. Delaney sat up in her bed and held down a wince. So, maybe she had hurt herself a little more than she’d thought.
“You are one tough cookie, Wilmer,” Rossi said from her left, a smile on his face.
“Yeah, yeah, enough about me. Please tell me you guys caught that son of a bitch while I was unconscious.” Delaney said, looking around at all of them.
“Oh, we got him soon after you left. He trailed blood after him to a small motel where he was trying to tend that huge gash you cut on him.” JJ said with a wink.
“Oh, good. That’s good.” She paused and looked around. “So, can we leave? I really don’t like hospitals.” Delaney said, fidgeting with the IV in her arm.
The team laughed and Delaney did too, though she wished she could get some meds for her head. And her back. And her ribs.
“They’re discharging you as soon as they give you some pain medication. Aren’t you in pain right now?” Spencer asked from the chair beside her.
“I can overlook the pain if it means getting out of here.” She said truthfully, her eyes wide and pleading.
“You’re insane,” Emily said with an amused glint in her eyes.
Thankfully, a nurse came in soon after that and prescribed Delaney with some medication for her to take for the next couple of weeks. She informed her that she would need to come back to a hospital in Virginia to get her stitches removed in a few weeks.
“I trust that you’re all smart enough to keep an eye on her and make sure she’s staying hydrated for the next few hours. Her concussion needs her to stay rested and hydrated. Miss Wilmer, you need to take those meds twice a day. Once in the morning and once before bed. I’ll bring the discharge papers now.” The nurse said to the group.
They all nodded and looked expectantly at Delaney. She held her hands up in surrender and took the meds the nurse gave her. She gulped down an entire bottle of water and the nurse came back in and took out Delaney’s IV. She signed the papers and smiled victoriously at her team.
“Let’s get out of here please,” Delaney said, pushing the blankets off her and standing from her bed.
She was still in her dress from the bar and she felt goosebumps rise on her skin. Why did hospitals have to be so cold? Before she could take another step, a sweater was being placed around her shoulders. She looked up and found Spencer putting his brown sweater on her with a kind smile. Morgan smirked at Prentiss as they watched Spencer and Delaney. Morgan mouthed ‘whipped’ to Prentiss and she covered her grin with her hand.
Delaney looked down, feeling heat rise on her cheeks as she picked up her heels and meds and walked out of her room. JJ and Emily came up to either side of her, both of them hooking their arms through hers.
“You’ve got him wrapped around your finger, Wilmer,” Emily said with a knowing smirk on her face.
“Who?” Delaney asked cluelessly.
“Oh no. Em, she’s as oblivious as him.” JJ said amusedly.
“What? Guys, what are you talking about?” Delaney asked desperately as they got into a car.
“No, we’ll let you come to it on your own. Better if we don’t interfere.” Emily said.
“I would usually be able to tell what you were talking about, but I just woke up from a concussion-induced sleep so I’m not as sharp as normal,” Delaney said, feeling drowsy from her meds.
Emily and JJ laughed and they all piled into the car, Spencer getting in the passenger seat while Derek drove. They all explained the details of catching Damien, Emily including the fact that his nose and stomach were still bleeding when they found him wandering the streets. He’d tried to put up a fight but he’d lost too much blood.
“All thanks to you and your knife-swinging glory,” JJ said, lightly bumping her shoulder.
Delaney laughed and sank down in her seat, pulling Spencer’s sweater tighter around her. It smelled like his cologne and coffee. It was comforting to have it with her, even though he was just a couple of feet in front of her.
They got back to the hotel and informed Delaney that they’d be leaving in an hour. She nodded and Spencer walked with her to her room. She unlocked her door and walked inside but Spencer lingered in the hallway. She looked back at him curiously.
“Are you coming in? I don’t really want to be alone right now.” She said, silently asking him to come in.
He quickly nodded, coming in and closing the door behind him. He walked in and sat on her bed as she crouched down to find some comfortable clothes from her duffel bag. She found a tank top and black work pants and glanced at Spencer.
“I’m gonna take a quick shower. Um, I would offer you something but I honestly don’t have anything here.” Delaney smiled nervously.
“No worries. I can entertain myself.” Spencer reassured her.
She nodded and headed to the bathroom. After quickly showering, she changed into her pants and tank top and looked at Spencer’s cardigan. Without thinking too much of it she put it on over her tank top. Delaney brushed through her wet hair and left her face bare, packing up all the things she had in her bathroom.
Spencer was still sitting on her bed when she came out. He eyed his cardigan but didn’t say anything about it. He’d packed her duffel bag while she’d been in the shower, all of it packed neatly inside, along with her meds. He held out a water bottle to her and she gave him a small grin, reluctantly taking it and downing the entire thing.
As she threw the empty bottle away, she took her bag from him, stuffing her toiletries in it. With a sigh, she put it down and sat next to him on her bed. She fiddled with her hands before finally gathering the courage to look up at him. Spencer was struck again by her beauty. She looked into his eyes and took his hand into both of hers.
“Spence, I want to thank you. You’ve been so incredibly kind to me this entire case and I haven’t been exactly easy to deal with. I mean, you obviously noticed this case was pretty triggering for me and then I managed to get myself beat up by the unsub and let him get away.” Delaney rambled, realizing how annoyed he probably was of her.
“Hey, that wasn’t your fault. You’re the reason we were even able to get the unsub, Delaney. And getting to work with you on this case has been so great. You’re so intelligent and are such a breath of fresh air. I mean, Delaney, you’re like the piece that this team has been missing. Don’t ever think that you’re a burden to us. You’re one of us now.” Spencer said, ducking his head to try to meet her eyes.
She didn’t want him to see her crying, though. He’d already seen it twice and that was twice more than anyone else had ever seen her cry. He probably thought she was so pathetic. Slowly, a hand wrapped under her chin and turned it to look up at Spencer’s face. A tear rolled down her face and his thumb caught it gently.
“I’m sorry. No one has ever seen me cry this much. Hell, no one has ever seen me cry at all. You probably think this is pathetic.” Delaney whispered.
“I don’t think you’re pathetic. I think you’ve kept your emotions bottled up for a long time and have put up a front for everyone else. I think you’re one of the strongest people I’ve ever met and you’re just not quite sure how to be vulnerable. But, Delaney, I want you to tell me everything. Tell me what you’ve kept hidden away from everyone else. I promise I’ll understand.” Spencer whispered back, bringing his other hand up to cup both of her cheeks.
Her tears were coming quicker now but he wiped away every single one of them. Delaney didn’t know what it was about Spencer, but she trusted him enough to tell him everything she was thinking. So she took a shaky breath and met his eyes.
“When I was 17, I went to a party at another person’s house from my school. It was the first and only party I’d ever been to, and I let myself be a normal teenager for that night. I got drunk and soon enough, this boy was pulling me into a dark room.” Delaney looked down and Spencer’s hands moved to hold her own.
“He… he held me so tight that I couldn’t move and he… touched me. He kissed me even though I didn’t want to be kissed, hell, it was my first kiss, and then…” Delaney couldn’t say it, her voice catching on a sob and she could barely breathe.
“Shh, you don’t need to finish. I understand. I understand why this case and why the bar was so difficult for you.” Spencer said, bringing a hand to rub her back.
“I buried the memory for so many years and when I saw those girls the first day we were here… Everything just came rushing back to me. I haven’t let myself get close enough to anyone to be romantic with them until the unsub.” Delaney said.
“I understand. I am so sorry that happened to you.” Spencer said.
Delaney finally looked at him and wiped her tears with the sleeve of his cardigan, a disbelieving smile spreading on her face. Spencer slowly smiled back, his eyes confused.
“Sorry, sorry. It’s just that I’ve never told anyone that before. I’ve barely known you a week and I told you something I’ve never even told people I thought were my friends.” Delaney said.
“You can tell me anything. I’m glad you told me this. I know it’s been weighing on you for a while.” Spencer said, playing with a lock of her wet hair on his finger.
Delaney surprised Spencer by tackling him in a tight hug, cuddling her face in his neck and squeezing her hands together around his waist. He immediately reciprocated, wrapping his arms around her upper back and resting his cheek on the top of her head. She always smelled like flowers, to Spencer’s amusement.
“You’re unlike anyone I’ve ever met, Spencer Reid.” She mumbled, slowly pulling away from him.
“Right back at you, Delaney Wilmer.” Spencer smiled.
“Okay, well that’s enough crying for the next century. We should probably head to your room so you can get your stuff, right?” Delaney said, finding some black flats to slip into.
“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.” Spencer nodded as Delaney zipped up her duffel bag and grabbed her purse.
“Let’s go.” She said, gesturing for him to lead the way.
They walked down the hall and Spencer unlocked the door with his key card. Morgan was in there, packing up a bag. He brightened up when he saw Delaney and Spencer. Delaney braced herself for some Derek Morgan banter that would most likely involve some teasing.
“The pretty boy and pretty girl have arrived! I thought you guys were going to miss the plane.” He smiled teasingly.
“Yeah, yeah. How many mirrors do you have in there? 10? I would think you’d need that many to contain your ego.” Delaney shot back with a devilish smile, sitting on one of the beds.
Spencer laughed and quickly stifled it with his hand as he started packing his clothes in his bag. Morgan raised his eyebrows as if he were impressed.
“Even with a concussion, you’re just as sharp, Wilmer. Impressive. Just, tell me, who’s sweater is that?” Derek pointed to Spencer’s sweater that was too big on her.
“Oh, this? It’s actually Rossi’s. He came to visit me in my room a few minutes ago.” Delaney said with wide eyes, a teasing glint in them.
“Really? Cause I could’ve sworn I saw a certain pretty boy give it to you at the hospital.” Morgan said, looking at Spencer.
“Rossi is quite pretty, isn’t he?” Delaney replied.
Both of the boys snickered. Derek pointed his finger at her with a wide grin, his eyes light with amusement.
“You’re lucky I like you, pretty girl.” He said.
“Aww, Derek! I’m so touched.” Delaney clapped her hands together with a fake swoon.
They were all laughing at that point, Derek coming over to ruffle Delaney’s hair affectionately. Delaney had to admit, he was growing on her. She wasn’t sure about him at first, but she enjoyed their banter now.
“Alright, we should get going. Hotch is probably waiting for us in the lobby.” Spencer said when he’d finished packing.
They all nodded and headed out to the elevator. They met the rest of the team in the lobby and drove to the jet. They all boarded and Delaney slid into a window seat, Spencer coming next to her. He had a book with him and Delaney read the cover. It looked to be some sort of mathematics book. Delaney chuckled at him because of course, he would be reading a book about math.
“The genius never stops, does he?” She asked.
“This book is interesting.” Spencer defended himself.
“Oh, is it? Please, tell me what’s so interesting about it. I’m practically falling out of my seat!” Delaney teased.
Hotch and Rossi looked over at them with amusement as Derek slid into one of the seats across from Delaney and Spencer.
“She got you there, Reid. Hey, how about all of us play a game?” Derek wiggled his eyebrows.
“She should really be sleeping right now,” Spencer mumbled from behind his book.
“Reid’s right. Kid, you should be trying to sleep for this entire ride home.” Rossi said with a stern look.
Delaney sighed and reluctantly rested her head back against the seat. She felt herself drifting off fairly quickly and soon enough, she was dead asleep.
Spencer was still reading when he felt a weight on his shoulder. He looked down and found Delaney’s head resting against his shoulder. His cheeks were warm as he realized how close they were. He looked up and found Morgan smiling like a madman.
“Don’t even think about it, Morgan,” Spencer warned.
Derek put his hands up in surrender and put his headphones on. He looked back at them and winked at Spencer first, though. Spencer just rolled his eyes and closed his book. He was decidedly exhausted after watching Delaney in the hospital for most of the day. With a quiet yawn, he closed his eyes and started falling asleep, gently resting his head on Delaney’s.
The rest of the team watched in amusement as the youngest members of the team slept peacefully, heads resting against each other. JJ and Emily were practically squealing and Hotch and Rossi shook their heads at the young agents.
“Kid’s got game,” Morgan said to the team.
“Oh, give them a break. One’s got a concussion and the other’s been awake for 36 hours. They’re exhausted.” Rossi tried to reason.
“Fine, fine. Who’s gonna wake them up?” Emily asked.
“Allow me,” Morgan smirked and made his way to Spencer.
Morgan leaned down to Spencer’s ear and rubbed the top of his head.
“Wake up, lover boy.” He said loudly in Spencer’s ear.
Spencer’s eyes shot open and noticed the position he was currently in. Then he noticed the rest of the team smirking at him. Blood rushed to his face as he felt his mouth go dry. This wasn’t how he was expecting his day to go.
“Good nap?” JJ asked.
“Um, yep,” Spencer said, his voice unusually high.
They all laughed and started to disperse, leaving Spencer to wake Delaney. He gently tapped her shoulder and she stirred. Her eyes opened and she looked up at Spencer. She pulled her head up and off of him, her heart pounding in her chest.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. Didn’t realize I fell asleep on you.” She said with a nervous laugh, avoiding his eyes.
“It’s all good. I, uh, fell asleep on you as well. The rest of the team saw us and woke me up. I’m just warning you cause they’ll probably tease us about it for a while.” Spencer stuttered with red cheeks.
“I’m pretty sure that’s their favorite thing to do. No worries, genius. I’ll stick up for us. Once I recover from all this.” She gestured to her head and then her arm.
Spencer chuckled and got up from his seat. He held his hand out to help her out and they got their stuff and made their way off the jet. They got back to the building and went up to the sixth floor. Delaney was impossibly tired as she slumped down in her desk. Morgan looked at her from his desk.
“Have a nice nap, sleeping beauty? Was Reid’s shoulder comfy?” He asked.
“It was actually. Much better than yours would’ve been.” She snapped slightly.
JJ and Emily snickered from their desks, all of them starting their reports. Delaney sighed and got to work on her report. She managed to finish it fairly quickly and walked up to Hotch’s office. She knocked gently and he told her to come in. Hotch looked up and gave her a surprised look.
“Wilmer? What are you still doing here? You need to go home and rest.” Hotch said.
“Oh, I stayed to finish my report. I was just letting you know that I’m heading out.” Delaney said, handing him her report.
“Wilmer, take a week off. I don’t want to see you until you have a note from a doctor that your concussion is gone and you’re cleared to be in the field.” Hotch said sternly.
Delaney sighed with disappointment but nodded her head. He took her report and told her to get better.
“Thank you, sir. I promise to sleep and go to the doctors this week. If I’m cleared in less than a week can I come in?” She asked hopefully as they walked into the bullpen.
Spencer listened to their conversation and chuckled at Delaney’s question. Of course, she wanted to get out of bed rest for a week.
“Call me if that happens and I’ll consider it. You need to have that doctor’s note, Wilmer.” Hotch said.
“Okay, okay. Goodbye, everyone. Have a good week without me.” Delaney said as she grabbed all her stuff.
They all bid her goodbye and Spencer gave her a small smile. She really didn’t want to be away from here for a week. She specifically didn’t want to be away from Spencer for a whole week. But Hotch would murder her if she came in without clearance from a doctor. So she sighed and went down to her car.
She drove back home, the memories of the week coming back to her. She was mentally exhausted and now she had to spend a week by herself in misery. With a sigh, she grabbed all her things and made her way into her apartment. She put her bags down in her room and looked around. That was the worst part of the day. When she was encompassed with the silence.
Delaney quickly slipped out of her flats and pants and put on a pair of sweatpants. She braided her hair back and walked to her living room. With a long sigh, she sat on her couch and put on her comfort movies; Harry Potter. Piling in with her blankets and pillows, she soon forgot about the case she’d just finished and was engrossed in the magical world of Hogwarts. Hours passed and she’d made it to Prisoner of Azkaban when her phone started to ring. She looked at it curiously until she realized it was Spencer. Her heart fluttered as she picked up.
“Hi, genius.” She smiled.
“Hey, Wilmer. How are you?” He asked.
“Watching Harry Potter. Trying not to think about the boring week I’m about to have.” Delaney sighed.
“Want some company?” He asked.
Delaney felt heat rise to her cheeks as a huge smile spread on her face. She instinctively brought the sleeve of his sweater to her nose as she kicked her feet excitedly.
“Yes, yes, yes, please. Will you bring some food with you as well? I didn’t really eat anything since… well, it’s been a while.” Delaney said cheekily.
She heard him chuckle quietly and it sounded like he was shutting a car door.
“Yes, I’ll get us something. From what I remember you like pad thai, right? And spring rolls?” Spencer asked.
“You are everything I could’ve ever dreamed of, doctor. You and your genius eidetic memory. Yes and yes. And maybe some sprite?” Delaney asked sweetly.
“You are a child, Delaney.” Spencer laughed.
“Noooo, I just don’t like alcohol. Come on, Spence, I can barely drink a glass of wine without feeling woozy.” Delaney defended herself.
“Alright, alright. Sprite, it is. Anything else?”
“Chocolate ice cream.”
“Delaney!” He groaned.
“Spencer, I am on bed rest. I would go get the ice cream myself, but couldn’t that be dangerous due to this concussion I have?” Delaney asked.
“You’re lucky I like you, Wilmer,” Spencer said.
“Byeeeeeeee!” She giggled into the phone, hanging up after.
She only then realized what was happening. Spencer was coming over. Dr. Spencer Reid was coming to her house to bring her food and hang out with her. She was still wearing his cardigan. She couldn’t bring herself to take it off yet because it still smelled so much like him. God, she was basically obsessed with him. But she still couldn’t take it off.
She decided that maybe she should try and fix herself up a little bit. Going to her room, she looked at herself in the mirror and took her hair out of the braid it had been in. It fell into its natural curls with a little more wave than usual. She dug through her duffel bag and put on some deodorant and her favorite rose perfume. She ran to get her makeup bag and walked to her bathroom that connected to her bedroom. Putting some blush, eyeliner, and mascara, she decided that she looked okay.
Delaney slipped into some bunny slippers and walked out into her living room. She straightened it up and cleaned up any mess she might’ve made. Delaney didn’t know why but something about Spencer wanted her to make sure her house was spotless. Satisfied, she sat back on her couch and continued watching Harry Potter. It was just a few minutes later that she heard knocking on her door. She shot up and ran over to the door. She opened it and found the familiar head of curls she liked so much.
“Doctor! My hero! Here, let me help you.” She said, taking some of the bags he was holding.
He just laughed and closed the door behind him. They made their way to the couch and Delaney set everything on her coffee table in front of the couch. Spencer put the remainder of the bags on there and sat next to her. He’d changed from his work clothes into some sweatpants and a hoodie. He looked so unlike his usual self that it made Delaney smile. He looked back at her and smiled back.
“I’m so happy you’re here. I know it’s only been a few hours but I was already lonely. Now I get to be with the one and only, Spencer Reid.” She smiled, bumping her shoulder into his playfully.
“I figured you wouldn’t want to be alone right now. So, what are we watching?” He asked, taking out the thai.
“Well, I was watching Harry Potter, but we can watch something else. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite thing. Especially such an esteemed genius like you.” Delaney smiled at him.
“I happen to love Harry Potter. What are we on? Goblet of Fire? Nice!” Spencer clapped his hands together excitedly.
Delaney gave him a grateful smile and took the ice cream to her freezer. She got some cups and utensils and brought them over, starting to pour the Sprite.
“Oh, wait, did you want this? I forgot to ask.” Delaney froze, looking at him with an apologetic smile.
“You’re fine. I like Sprite.” Spencer laughed at her expression.
Delaney nodded and continued pouring the drinks. Then she organized the food on the table and dug in. Spencer did the same and paid attention to the movie. He did actually like Harry Potter, Goblet of Fire being one of his favorites. He was usually pretty clueless with pop culture stuff but he really couldn’t escape Harry Potter.
Delaney was completely entranced with the movie, eating her thai food happily. She even quoted parts of the movie and kicked her feet happily when a good part came on. Spencer paid less and less attention to the movie and more attention to the girl beside him. She was still wearing his cardigan which hadn’t gone unnoticed by him. He found it endearing and quite honestly adorable. When the movie finished, she turned to him.
“What a masterpiece! I mean, wasn’t that just amazing, Spence?” Delaney said, her eyes bright with excitement.
“Yeah, Delaney, it was amazing.” He agreed with an amused smile.
She sighed in content and looked over at the man beside her. He had already been looking at her and she gave him a warm smile. Turning her body to fully face him, she squinted her eyes at him. He mimicked her and did the same, which made Delaney laugh.
“Doctor Reid, I don’t know a lot about you. I’ve seemingly shared some of my darkest secrets and yet I don’t know much about the infamous genius.” Delaney said.
“Alright, well… I’m from Las Vegas. I got into the FBI when I was 22 and I’ve been in the BAU ever since. Uh, I love… statistics.” He said with his eyebrows raised.
“The statistics thing I know, but Vegas, huh?” She said. “You a master gambler?”
“Eh, I’m pretty good. But it’s also because I count cards in poker.” He said with a sheepish grin. “I’m banned from basically every casino in Vegas.”
Delaney laughed, shaking her head in amusement. Of course that’s what he did.
“If you could have any superpower what would it be?” Delaney asked him with a playful smile.
Spencer furrowed his eyebrows and tilted his head in confusion. He obviously wasn’t used to having a conversation like this.
“Superpowers? Hm, well it depends on what you would consider superpowers. Are you talking about mainstream superpowers like flying or being invisible or the ones focused solely on comic books like Spider-Man or Superman?” He asked.
“Let’s just say general superpowers. And you can’t say super intelligence because you already have that.” Delaney teasingly narrowed her eyes.
He blushed and nervously messed with his hair as he averted his eyes from her.
“I don’t know. Maybe being able to turn invisible? I could read in peace without ever worrying about anyone bothering me.” He said with a small laugh.
“But then no one would be able to see your cute face!” Delaney exclaimed, ruffling his hair with a giggle.
He blushed and looked away from her, thoroughly flustered by her words. He met her eyes and smiled softly at her, making Delaney’s stomach flip. His eyes reminded her of a teddy bear; wide and innocent while being warm at the same time.
“Well, what about you? What superpower would you want?” He asked.
“Um, I think I would want to be able to read minds. That way I would know what someone was thinking and if they were dangerous or not. And if not that then I would want the power to heal people. Mentally and physically.” She looked down when she talked about healing, thinking of her parents.
Spencer noticed her get quiet and thought of an idea.
“Well, how about this. I’ll tell you what I’m thinking about if you tell me what you’re thinking about. It’s not mind-reading, but it’s as close as you can get.” Spencer said.
“Alright. What are you thinking about?” Delaney asked with a small smile.
“I’m thinking about how shy people talk little about themselves, but they do this in a way that makes other people feel that they know them very well. I’m guilty of this and though you aren’t necessarily shy, you tend to do the same thing.” Spencer said.
“Well, I can’t argue with you there. You know I don’t really open up to people. I managed to get through high school and college without telling anyone about my parents or what happened to me at that party.” Delaney said, not realizing what had come out of her mouth until it was too late.
“Your parents?” Spencer asked gently.
“Shit,” Delaney muttered, her cheeks turning red.
“Hey, hey. You don’t have to tell me. Look, why don’t I tell you a little something about me?” Spencer suggested.
Delaney quietly nodded, looking up at him.
“My mom… she’s a paranoid schizophrenic. And she struggled with it my entire childhood. My dad left when I was young and then it was just me and her. She was so far gone in her delusions that I soon became the parent. Even when kids would beat me up and make fun of me cause I was the freak genius that was in high school at 12, she didn’t realize. It was really hard. I had to put her in a home when I turned 18 and she’s doing better now, but I still think back to the days when I had to take care of us when I was a kid.” Spencer said, looking in front of him.
“Spence… I am so sorry. That must have been so hard to not have a parent to take care of you.” Delaney said sympathetically.
He just looked over at her with a strained smile. She could tell the memories were still painful for him. She understood him a lot better than she thought.
“When I was 14, my parents were killed. Um, murdered, actually. By a psychiatric patient who’d escaped. He broke into our house and shot them with my dad’s gun. He didn’t realize that I was in the house so he just left when he was done with them. I called the police and laid in the bed with them until the cops got there and forced me to move. I was covered in their blood and they actually suspected it was me for a short period. My grandparents took me in after that, but my grandma is pretty verbally abusive. So I left at the first chance I got. Never looked back.” Delaney said.
She finally looked up from her hands and saw that Spencer had tears in his eyes. With a painful smile, she wiped a tear that slipped down his face. He caught her hand in his and pulled it to his chest.
“You’re the strongest person I’ve ever met.” He said quietly.
“And you’re the strongest person I’ve ever met,” Delaney whispered back.
With a sense of understanding between the two, they both embraced each other tightly. Spencer was rocking her back and forth while playing with her hair. Delaney inhaled the comforting smell of Spencer and clung to his soft sweatshirt.
“Thank you for listening.” She mumbled into his chest.
He pulled away and looked down at her. With a small smile, he held out his pinkie to her. Delaney furrowed her eyebrows but wrapped her pinkie around his.
“Whenever you want to talk, tell me. Whenever I want to talk, I’ll tell you. From here on out, we let each other know when everything gets to be too much, okay?” He said.
“Okay.” Delaney smiled.
