Farm Fresh Challenger SRT8 392
Love at first sight comes in many forms. For Arthur Vitoria, owner of several classic E-Bodies over the years, his decision to buy a late-model Challenger came with lightning speed.
A dairy farmer by trade, Vitoria’s legacy for Mopar muscle cars began with a 1971 Road Runner he purchased at the age of 13. His first Challenger was also white (you can see a theme here) that he purchased when he was 16. It required new paint, a hood, and side glass; these rare parts stolen while the car was sitting in a local barn.
Things stepped up dramatically when Vitoria spotted a 1970 AAR ’Cuda that was for sale in Hemmings. Unfortunately, the car was 1,400 miles from his home in Central California. Unable to make the trip, his father made the trek to check out the car, but found it to be in less than pristine condition, with significant rust and in need of major renovation.
Against his best judgment, but knowing full well the disappointment that would greet him if he didn’t haul the car back home to his son, Vitoria’s father loaded up the car and took it back to California. As expected, his son was over the moon with excitement when it arrived and set about repairing the rusty machine. In less than a year, the rare ’Cuda was repaired using funds he procured by selling his white Challenger. Victoria still owns that AAR today, the lessons learned about welding in quarter-panels and overall mechanics to restore and upgrade the ’Cuda serving him well with subsequent car builds.
Fast-Forward to December 9, 2016. On a random drive by the local Dodge dealership, Vitoria spotted a “lightly used” white-hot 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT 392. Vitoria was sold on that car in an instant. A couple of hours later, the car was home in the safety of Vitoria’s garage. Best of all, his wife loved the car too and was extremely supportive of his latest acquisition.
Over the years, Vitoria had learned a lot from his father, working alongside him on their various projects and on the dairy farm that currently supports 2,500 heads of cattle (that need to be milked twice a day — in case you think you have a busy schedule). Over the years, the two men built a number of cars, including a 1934 Plymouth street rod and a 1969 Camaro with a full ProCharger supercharger system, just to hit the highlights. So it was a given that Vitoria’s newest Challenger would go through a full makeover.
At the heart of the power upgrades was the installation of a ProCharger F1A-94 kit. ProCharger was first to offer a kit for this engine configuration, and Vitoria was the first to install one. But to get the most of the system, he knew he needed to improve the strength of the engine if he wanted crank up the boost. Key points to the ProCharger install include a Race (larger sizing) intercooler, “Red” blow-off valve and an Alkycontrol Methanol Injection system.
Vitoria removed the 392-cid engine and installed a “drop-in” stroker rotating assembly with Ross forged aluminum alloy pistons, Manley connecting rods, and a forged steel crankshaft. A Comp Cams custom camshaft with 0.618/0.620 inch is the perfect valvetrain component for this engine combination. In tandem with the CNC’d HHP factory cylinder heads upgraded with PSI valvesprings and Manley titanium retainers, the final compression was dropped to 9.7:1.
One look at the Challenger and it’s easy to see that the suspension has been heavily modified. Not only have the struts been changed in the front, but braces have also been added to reduce wheelhop — a severe problem with Challengers of this vintage. Eibach lowering springs are used all around, but the quality of the ride has been retained throughout. In final review, the front suspension was lowered 1.4 inches over stock ride height and 1.5 inches in the rear.
At the four corners, Vitoria added Rohanna RF2 wheels, 20×10 up front and 20×11 in the rear. Nitto 555 tires were used as well, 275/40ZR-20 in the front and huge 315/35ZR20 Nitto NTO5Rs in the rear. As an added touch, he had 392 Hemi lettering added to the sidewall, epoxied in place.
The result of all this work is a car that’s driven often and has the looks Vitoria envisioned for his Challenger. With 15 pounds of boost, the Challenger has been able to generate 725 rwhp on the dyno. That power is enough to push the Pearl White Challenger to 11.22 seconds at 129 mph with severe tire slip. Vitoria expects the car to run 10.20s on pump gas with improved tuning and tires.
In anyone’s book, that’s “moovin’” — dairy farmer or not!
Vitoria’s Challenger puts out an amazing 725 rwhp in street trim — more than enough to smoke up those sticky street-style Nitto tires.
At the heart of the big power is the Stage 2 ProCharger F1A-94 system. Through some careful manipulation, the system fits neatly into the driver side of the engine compartment and retains that cool shaker hood.
The current run of Challengers cut a striking pose as they cruise down the street. A sharp-eyed performance enthusiast will spot the big ProCharger “Race” intercooler tucked right behind the factory grille to achieve maximum inlet cooling.
Vitoria says he received the first ProCharger system for this application. Currently, he’s running 15 pounds of boost.
The ProCharger kits feature a full complement of tubing that routes airflow to and from the F1A-94 supercharger housing. A “Red” blow-off valve ensures that pressures are metered properly to protect all system components.
Intake air is drawn from this large filter element next to the shaker hood cover. The 4-inch tubing provides high-rate airflow throughout the system.
Just for perspective, this angle demonstrates how nicely the ProCharger kit fits within the engine compartment. All factory systems were retained including such things as air conditioning and adaptive cruise control.
Chrysler offers an assortment of interior colors these days, and this Challenger sports the Sepia brown upholstery with black dash and console.
Vitoria installed a Hurst shifter to make certain that shifts are smooth and accurate.
To keep tabs on key engine operations, Vitoria added this brace of gauges that include (from top) fuel pressure, air/fuel ratio, and boost pressure.
The only exception to the factory bodywork is this cool carbon-fiber rear spoiler that mounts in the factory position. The paint is actually Ivory White Tri-Coat Pearl, for all of those paint aficionados out there.
One of the beautiful things about this Challenger is that it retains much of the factory looks in spite of the power increase. What you can’t hear hear is that the engine sound is much more of a roar on demand than the factory offering, courtesy of the Dynomax mufflers, TTi headers, and custom exhaust tips.
Nitto 555 front tires, measuring 275/40ZR20, are used up front wrapped around Rohanna RF2 wheels and covering the Demon front rotors and Brembo calipers.
The rear Nittos NTO5R 315/35ZR20 tires also use Rohanna RF2 wheels. Red Brembo calipers peek out from between wheel spokes.
The factory shaker hood is a signature Mopar performance feature that signals the arrival of big power. In this case, it belies the really big power packed into this Challenger.
Suspension changes for this Challenger include additional rear bracing to help reduce wheelhop and Eibach lowering springs that take the body down 1.4 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the rear.
This snap shot shows exactly what caught the eye of Vitoria as he drove by the local Dodge dealership. Note the sales pitch in the window — Low Miles with a happy face — the latter of which was a perfect match to the smile on Vitoria’s face after purchase.
ProCharger superchargers have garnered huge success in drag racing, but their street superchargers are equally impressive and engineered to fit around the components found in daily driven cars like this one.

Road Tests: 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon
Vital Statistics
Engine: 6.2 liter
Horsepower: 840
Torque: 770 lb-ft.
0-60 mph: 2.3 seconds
1/4 mile: 9.65 seconds
We’ve all heard the numbers and seen the hype videos. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, with its 840-horsepower Hellcat engine will do the ¼ in 9.65-seconds, while hitting 60 in just 2.3. But as with most cars, there’s more here than just numbers. So come along to the dark side with us, as we do some down and dirty deeds with the demon.
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is one of those cars that you think is only possible in a dream. Fortunately, the hard-working folks at Dodge’s Street and Racing Technology division are more than just dreamers. They actually made this drag strip worthy beast happen.
It seems implausible with all of the hype surrounding it, but the Demon was actually developed mostly in secret; engineers going cloak and dagger, and even working on their own time, until they knew they had something the brass would devour.
We all know the basics for more horsepower, more air, and more fuel to react with it; but cranking the Hellcat’s 6.2-liter HEMI V8 up to 840-horsepower and 770 lb-ft. of torque required a lot of work, a few more revs, and 100-octane fuel. On premium grade gas it’s a mere 808 horse ride.
Such output also demanded cranking the supercharger up to 14.5 psi to shove said air into the combustion chambers.
Along the way it passes through an SRT-developed Power Chiller which uses the A/C’s refrigerant to reduce air temps by up to 18-degrees.
On the other end of the engine, they beefed up everything that carries the power to the rear wheels, added a production-car first TransBrake for nailing killer launches, and a line lock for simplifying burnouts.
Now, with all of that in mind, what you might not expect, is at the dragstrip, the Demon is not that insane at all. And by that we mean doing ten second ¼-miles in a car properly set up for drag racing, is similar to hitting a road course in a perfectly balanced race car.
The Demon launches extremely hard, but if you hit it just right, all of the car’s weight gets pushed to the rear, and it just hooks up and takes off; carrying all of that power down the track with no drama whatsoever.
Sure, you can get some wheel-spin if you want, but using Drag Mode with Launch Assist and Torque Reserve makes launching super simple.
All Demons come equipped with the TorqueFlite 8HP90 8-speed automatic transmission, which fired through gears without missing a beat; as we made passes continuously for an entire afternoon, without a hiccup.
So, don’t think of this as some one-off car just to do a couple runs and get some crazy numbers for publicity.
With temps in the 90s and high humidity, we couldn’t match Dodge’s NHRA-certified run of 9.65 but we ran consistent low-10s, and came real close to matching the claimed 2.3-seconds to 60.
Other things that set the Demon apart from standard Hellcat fare, are the Air Grabber hood and wide-body styling that adds fender flares to fully cover the standard 315/40/18 Nitto drag radials. Wheels for those front skinnies are part of the $1 Demon Crate option.
Unique touches inside, include a numbered Demon badge, and Demon logo on the seats. A Speedlogix 4-point harness is also an option…
…as is the front passenger seat, though Dodge will throw it back in for just a buck more.
Even though every update has been made with drag racing in mind, it remains a very street-able car. And as a value-added bonus, due to the flexible sidewalls of the drag radials, ride quality is actually better than the Hellcat.
Now, you would think that’d be enough SRT news for one year, but Dodge has got something else headed our way for ’18, it’s the Durango SRT.
Believe it or not, it’s the first time Dodge has applied the SRT treatment to this 3-row SUV.
For power, it gets the 392 HEMI V8, which supplies 475-horsepower and 470 lb-ft. of torque. The all-wheel-drive system, 8-speed automatic transmission, suspension, and 7-mode drive system all get upgraded to handle it.
This Durango will hit 60 in 4.4-seconds, and clear the ¼-mile in less than 13. But even more impressive, is that you lose none of the functionality that you buy an SUV for; as this Durango will tow 8,700-lbs.
There’s a body kit of course, and plenty of interior treatments as well.
The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT rolls out of showrooms for $64,090.
But, back to the Demon. For a turnkey 9-second drag car, base pricing of $86,090 doesn’t seem that evil. That’s less than what some of the original Hellcat’s were going for. 3,000 of them will be available here in the U.S.
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon may be a hellishly fast car, but we say God Bless the U.S.A.; as the forces of good and evil have combined to create one of the most amazing cars to ever lay down rubber on America’s streets.

Dodge Challenger Demon Has Industry-First Launch Assist That Prevents Wheel Hop
Dodge has already launched seven teasers for the upcoming Challenger SRT Demon and it has been pretty clear that the muscle car was designed to destroy any competition at the drag strip. Still skeptical about that? Well, it’s time you find out that the Demon is equipped with a range of race-hardened parts and that it has tech that protects the driveline from damage during hard launches. You can also forget about wheel hop, as the car’s Launch Assist system uses the wheel speed sensors to watch for signs that the tires are slipping or sticking.
What this means is that if slip is detected, the SRT Demon’s control module reduces engine torque to maximize traction almost instantly, without the driver having to lift his foot off the throttle. Launch Assist also reduces loads in the driveline from wheel hop by more than 15-20 percent, thus reducing component damage. This is an industry-first feature and should help the Demon deliver impressive quarter-mile runs.
Dodge also upgraded several components in order to improve durability and power delivery. For instance, it upgraded the torque shaft by using high-strength steel and a 20-percent increase in tube thickness and heat treated stub-shafts, which increases torque capacity by 15 percent. A new differential housing made from heat-treated aluminum alloy also enhanced torque capacity by 30 percent. Additionally, upgraded 41-spline half shafts deliver 20 percent increased torque capacity. This was accomplished through the use of increased diameter high-strength low alloy steel and eight-ball joints that improve torque capacity while reducing operating temperatures by more than 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
Drivetrain upgrades aside, Dodge revealed that the driver will be able to use a new four-point harness bar at the track. It’s made by Speedlogix and it can be installed without cutting or drilling anything in the car, as mounting points were made accessible in the back. As a quick reminder, the Demon doesn’t have rear seats.
Stay tuned for another teaser next week and don’t forget to tune in for the full update from the 2017 New York Auto Show in April.

Released from the Fire: The Demon is Here!
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it is here. The Demon has arrived! This is probably one of the most anticipated vehicle releases that we can remember in recent history, and rightfully so because this car is breaking a lot of precedents set by the industry and tooting its horn louder than everyone.
Yes the Demon is the first production car to pull wheelies.
youtube
3,300 people in North America (3,000 in the U.S. and 300 in Canada) will receive the SRT Demon, the first purpose-built street-legal production car in the industry. This limited-production vehicle has 840 hp and 770 lb.-ft. of torque, sending it down the quarter mile in 9.62 seconds at 140 mph. Guinness World Records certified the Demon as the first production car to achieve a front-wheel lift, not hard to believe when 60 mph shows up in 2.3 seconds.
Enough numbers though. What are these lucky owners getting with this monster?
The first goodie is one that hits home with us here at Hot Rod because our editors were the ones who wrote the leather-bound track tech manual that lays out the technical aspects of the car and teaches owners how to set the car up for the track.
Dodge reached out to Hot Rod where some of the editors contributed to writing the owner’s manual for the Demon.
There are a couple of options that only cost $1.00USD.
Demon Authentication Package
This includes the 12 build sheets that denote each unique configuration of every Demon as it was produced.
A carbon-fiber Certicard featuring the owner’s name, VIN number, serial number and production option(s) sales code.
The Demon Crate
This crate contains an array of parts that allows each owner to unleash all of the power and torque the Demon is capable of on the track. Inside owners will find:
Direct Connection Parts:
Performance powertrain control module with high-octane engine calibration
Replacement switch module containing high-octane button
Conical performance air filter
Passenger mirror Block-off plate
Narrow, front-runner drag wheels
Demon-branded track tools:
Hydraulic floor jack with carrying bag
Cordless imact wrench with charger
Torque wench with extension and socket
Tire pressure gauge
Fender cover
Tool Bag
The back seat is also available for $1.00USD, but if part number 82215918 is ordered, owners will get everything needed to block off the opening to the trunk and replace the seat with a cargo tray.
If you want to go faster, you must shed some weight. Passengers are weight.
Owners also get a foam-padded case to secure the front-runner wheels and tools in the trunk.
Those were the goodies that only cost a dollar! That’s not it though, because there’s plenty more pieces to this crazy puzzle.
As much fun as the Demon will be on the track, it’s even better out on the street. Mopar is offering the Demon Street Tire Package (part number: 82215919) which includes 20×11-inch Devil’s Rim wheels from the widebody Hellcat with Pirelli 305/35ZR20 tires.
The Demon’s Rim wheels are the same as those on the Widebody Hellcat and are available for street use on the Demon.
Once back home after a weekend at the track, owners can put the Demon to sleep with a personalized, tailored car cover. Meant for indoor use, this cover features the same paint scheme of each car with the driver’s name embroidered above the driver’s door and is available for purchase at $695 USD.
The custom car covers have been tailor-made for the Demon.
In any vehicle, especially one that has been banned by the NHRA because it’s too fast, safety is very important. Speedlogix offers an optional four-points harness bar that doesn’t require the owner to cut or drill anything to install it, as the Demon does not come standard with a back seat.
The harness bar makes sure the four-points harness will keep the driver in the seat as it blasts down the quarter in a fashion deemed bannable by the NHRA.
No racecar is complete without data acquisition. Racelogic created a Demon-exclusive VBOX Video HD2 data logger and in-car camera system. This system uses 10-hertz GPS capability that synchronizes with the video capture to provide the driver with real-time track performance of the vehicle.
Racelogic provided a bespoke data-logging and image-capturing system exclusively for the Demon.
The trackable information and functions includes:
60-, 330-, 660-, 1000-feet, quarter-mile and 0-60 et.
Accelerator and brake use
Gear selection
Engine RPM
Vehicle speed
G-force reading from launch
Wheel slip
Air temperature
Altitude
Launch Control activation
TransBrake activation
The display looks like a video-game but the functionality is beneficial to anyone wanting to maximize the performance of the Demon.
Like many other gadgets on the Demon, the VBOX HD2 Video system is customized with the owner’s name, VIN and serial numbers all printed on a metal ID badge on the harness bar, and the carrying case.
The Demon being delivered to dealerships today is incredibly exciting. Dodge and SRT have made a car that stands alone in the industry. This is the first car to come with features like drag radials and a transmission brake from the manufacturer. Tim Kuniskis, Head of passenger cars, Dodge, SRT, Chrysler & Fiat, FCA North America ensures that the engine in the Demons is all new.
“It’s not a tuned-up version of our Hellcat engine. The only part that carries over is the cylinder head. We deck honed the block, which is something you see on racecar engines. New crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, camshaft, valvetrain, and 2.7L supercharger.”
youtube
Needless to say, we are itching to get our hands on one of these cars and put it through its paces. A car like this is truly unique and capable of great things. We’ll have to wait and see. Until then, get ready for the internet to get inundated with videos as buyers finally take ownership of the 2018 Dodge SRT Demon starting this week!
