" WHAT do we— " her would-be question dies in her throat as her back slams into compact earth, knocking the air from her lungs in a single blow. only well-trained reflex lets her lift her head in time to not smack herself unconscious, though the impact still leaves her dazed, the stars spinning out of control overhead.

" what was that for, " the jawa hisses into the narrow space between them, though she makes no move to get up or crawl out from where hera has her pinned. this close to the ground, she can abruptly sense what her companion no doubt noticed ; rhythmic footsteps. stormtrooper marching rhythm. " never mind, " she whispers, barely a breath as she trains her ears on the sound, whiskers twitching.

closer, and closer still. there's no time to move. when they're only a few paces away, cheppi releases her tightly-held tension, going limp and silent as she sinks within herself, within the force, wrapping them both in a thick fog of notice-me-not and deadening the sounds of their beating hearts beneath the thin cover of the ferns.

the random patrol passes, the dull echoes of their marching boots and marching minds vanishing down a bend in the ravine.

gently, she sunders herself from that quiet peace, the feeling of a wrenching ache lasting only a moment before she's nudging hera with an elbow.

" c'mon. we better get gone. "

" EVIDENTLY, most of the empire, " ben answers grimly, dropping onto a crate with a wince he doesn't bother to conceal. around them, the rebellion bustles like an anthill as yavin iv is emptied out — he'd quietly excused himself from the tactical table, claiming a need for meditation. not his most subtle lie, but nobody had questioned it, allowing him to slip through the harried crowds until he found who he was looking for.

the shock of sensing her lingers ; a struck chord deep beneath his sternum, the ache all too familiar. regret. i have failed you.

" i should not be here, " he sighs at length. " i'm putting you all at risk. he'll be hunting me, now. "

ben looks up from his hands, old and worn and twisted in his lap with the worry he wraps around himself as a heavy cloak. despite its weight, he manages to smile for her, blue eyes glinting beneath snowy brows.

" enough about me. i'm alive, and so are you — and that is what matters. " there's a lifelong sorrow in his gaze, but also warmth, crow's feet deepening as he takes in the sight of her.

" it's good to see you, padawan. "

Cirz’s smile widens into a grin, flashing teeth ‘cuz his friend reaffirms his words. “I knew you would understand, it’s not like I’m just making excuses. This is umm.” He pouts mid-thought, spins his lightsaber hilt. “You know when two magnets are on the wrong side and repel. They kind of feel like this, it weirds me out! And I bet yours are fine cuz they are a set. That’s kinda wizard!”

He knows that what he needs to do next is consult a master about this.Preferably his master because next time she could let him borrow her lightsaber to try again. “I don’t think jar-kai is for me… But I kinda want to check different kybers now. On a scale from one to Master Windu’s death glare, how rude do you think it is to ask senior padawan brothers to check their kyber out?”

Hera examines the weapons her friend is showing and nods, too. One can't just use two lightsabers to make a proper Jar'kai set. The crystals choose their Jedi, just like Jar'kai chooses its practitioner. 

❝ You're right, ❞ the Twi'lek girl agrees. ❝ My 'sabers work because I found two crystals on Jedha instead of one. ❞ 

She remembers being extremely confused about it, knowing she'd found something, and opening her closed palm to her Master only to discover two crystals. Two yellow ones, even, singing louder than her first lightsaber ever did. 

❝ I still like Jar'kai better, though. ❞

At least now it's been a month since she last messed up her katas.

Luke wouldn't know anything about the jedi, other than that his father was one of them. he'd held onto his name with a strong respect, eager to tell anyone and anything willing to listen that his father was the bravest jedi knight of them all - that he fought until his last breath, dying a hero's death. of course, Luke doesn't know that this fact just isn't true, but it's better to let the boy believe that his father was a hero than to tell him the truth - it's better to let him believe in the good in his father than to rest on the darkness that resides with the man that gave him life.

he smiles at Hera, nodding his head in agreement. "they're the best," he tells her, meaning every word. oh, how he loves his aunt and uncle and wishes only for the best for them. he doesn't know what he would do if they were no longer around to see him grow. while they might not be his parents, he loves them just the same as if they were. they raised him, after all, and they have raised him to be kind no matter what, and that's the kind of life that Luke will carry on, long after they're gone.

"okay, Hera, i'll call you that instead," he says, giggling, eyes sparkling with amusement as he reaches out to take her hand and shake it like he's seen the adults do when greeting each other. he doesn't know why they do that, but doing it with Hera makes him giggle.

then she's asking him about her faulty hyperdrive and he straightens up, pulling a serious face as he salutes her. "i can take a look at it. i might be able to fix it. uncle Owen lets me fix things all the time and i'm getting pretty good at it. what's going on with it?"

Luke, of course, is older than Hera remembers.

Finally seeing the boy is when it hits her, exactly how much time has passed since her world has been shattered — ten years since she’s been alone. 

(Not entirely, because her parents were there for a little while until she had to run again, but still — they can’t ever replace the Temple or the Jedi who actually raised her)

He started staring at her first so Hera doesn’t mind too much staring back, because it gives her a chance to assess that he’s fine. He’s smiling, doesn’t look hurt or scared at all. Which means she’ll have a quiet chat with Obi-Wan later — if they both survive the recent mess. 

❝ Yes, I will be, ❞ Hera replies. ❝ Your aunt and uncle are very generous. ❞

She’s beyond grateful for their help, because the risk for someone like her to stay in any world from Hutt space longer than she should is too high.

Hera doesn’t know how much Luke is conscious of the atrocities happening on his world to Twi’lek, so she doesn’t mention the real reason why the Lars allowed her to stay. 

❝ My name is Hera. And you don’t have to call me ma’am, it makes me feel old. ❞ She’s joking, of course, and makes it obvious with her tone. ❝ Do you know how to fix a faulty hyperdrive, then? ❞
