Dreamoths are abundant insectoids who are active when the body is asleep. They inhabit the higher underground layers of the subconscious where most dreams take place. When the Self is detected nearby while dreaming, they follow and record the dream with their two pairs of eyes on their wings. A well remembered dream is vivid and coherent (as much as a dream can be coherent).

Most dreamoths live in nomadic friend groups that travel along the surface of the conscious mind. They seek memory trees to find the best memory orbs to gather and decorate their silk nests. Each individual moth has different tastes, some prefer childhood memories of playing tag on the playground, others prefer memories of wearing hats. Whatever they prefer, they pluck each from the tree and weave them to their nests. As an unintended consequence, those memories deep underground into the subconscious, and influence the dreams I have. Once the moths move onto a new location, they leave behind the nest, where it decomposes, and the memories break free and float back to their memory trees.

Some introject families make it there mission to keep dreamoths away from certain memory orbs to prevent them seeping into my dreams. It’s a common stereotype that ints and moths are natural rivals because of this. The ints most successful at this currently protect my scary memories. In a perfect mind, ints would leave the moths alone to perform their ecological role (to influence my dreams), but since they also work with memory orbs for their own agendas, competition is bound to happen eventually.

Selkra is a lifelong critter doodler who's been meticulously worldbuilding alien societies since first playing Spore in 2009 and daydreaming about personified emotions since rewatching Inside Out in 2020. In the meantime, Selkra resides somewhere on Earth doing people activities such as arts and crafts on the floor, hugging plushies, staring at bugs and mustering up the patience to read sci-fi novels.

Broken Yolk Galaxy is a pair of galaxies merged into one within a cosmological void, and the sophant alien cultures that evolved and coexist in it. The main focus is on a trio of roommates who do interplanetary travel within the Spectrum Solar System on spaceship Appex looking for work and learning to get along.

The original sketch from my dream journal. There were a few details changed to make them seem more related to ints and ear worm. As you can see, my mind is full of bugs.

I originally conceptualized them as dragonflies but now I think moths suit them more. Seeing them as moths in my dreams made “moths” feel at lot more cannon.
