Defying Rules For Freedom of Choice

    Rules are made to create boundaries between right and wrong. School rules and regulations are essential to maintain balance within the school grounds. Students' handbooks are distributed throughout the school premises to inform the students about their limitations. To apply this rules effectively, students should know all the information written in the handbook.

    San Pablo City Science High school does have their own rules and regulations, but like promises, rules are meant to be broken. San Pablo City Science High school students are known for being disciplined, studious and academically competitive. That’s why students are obliged to follow the rules of this prestigious school. But why are some Science High School students violating these simple rules?

    One rule that these students violated is buying from stores in DLSP Campus, but outside the SPCSHS buildings. During recess and lunch break, I often see a lot of students buying from other stores especially “kay titang Minane”. When you ask these students why they are not buying in the school canteen their answer is simple, “mahal sa canteen or masarap sa labas.” They do this because they know that they have the freedom to choose what is best for them. But they also need to take in consideration the consequences of their choices, not only to themselves, but also thier families and friends. But these students don’t understand that the management of this school only prioritizes the health of their students, so they don’t allow them to buy food from other stores aside the school canteen to ensure the cleanliness of the food.

    This is only a simple rule, but why do these students break it? They have the knowledge to distinguish right from wrong, but why do they still do it? I think the reason why these students from science high break rules is that they study the rules very well, you know why? Because they just follow Dai Lama XIV's quote “Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively.”
