OOOOH YES THANK YOU SOOO MUCH THIS IDEA HAD BEEN CIRCLING IN MY MIND AAAA ‼️‼️
—————
Hours of sparring had left you nearly breathless, sweat running down various parts of your body in rivulets. The sun was high in the sky, but the end of the training session was nowhere in sight. Still, adrenaline continued to course through you as you and Lucius — your sparring partner — slowly circled each other.
Since you’d gotten a nasty gash on your leg at one of the more recent games, he’d been teaching you better techniques with the shield. Luckily, your leg was healing nicely, but he just wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again.
As one of the few female gladiators, you mostly fought in novelty acts, but you’d snuck into bigger games wearing a Thraex helmet a couple of times. You were a skilled warrior and Lucius enjoyed fighting at your side, but he was always more on edge as he worried about your safety.
And so, he was a rather strict teacher in the training grounds. He had to make sure there were no mistakes, knowing too well how much those could cost.
He found a way to distract you for the merest second and took the opportunity to lunge. He knocked the shield out of your grasp, but you raised your sword to meet his next blow.
He advanced, your swords still clashing, making you retreat until your back was suddenly against a pillar. He feinted, using his shield to knock your sword out of your grasp when you moved to deflect.
He pointed the tip of his sword at the hollow of your throat, panting, his gaze holding yours.
“And just like that, you’d be dead,” he said, frustration making a muscle tick in his jaw.
You gave him a sly little grin, feeling like pushing his buttons. He could get so serious during training that you had to find ways to get him out of that headspace, if only to ground him.
“It’s just unfair that you happen to be very good at distracting me, Lucius,” you said. “Nobody else can do that.”
He lowered his sword, blinking at you almost as if in disbelief.
“Really? That is your excuse?”
You shrugged, raising your chin. “It’s what I’m going with, yes.”
He huffed, half amused, and raised an eyebrow at you. You didn’t back down, your grin widening. He shook his head, muttering unbelievable.
“Behave,” he said sternly.
“Or what?” You countered.
Now he raised both eyebrows and your stomach flipped at the shift in his eyes. He stepped closer, cornering you, and looked down his nose at you in that way that told you you were in trouble.
But then he smiled, a lupine quality to the curl of his lips. He bent his head towards your ear and lowered his voice so only you could hear him.
“You know what, actually? Keep misbehaving, I know exactly how to deal with you later,” he said, a promise at the edge of his tone. “But in the meantime, pick up your sword. We’re going again.”
Before he could draw back, you tugged him to you by the tunic until your lips were a hair’s breadth apart.
“Do your worst,” you whispered, grinning mischievously as you held his gaze for a moment longer before shoving him back.
And that’s exactly what he planned to do.
