Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean Word count: 1558 Genre: Romance Pairing: Jack/Elizabeth Rating: M Content warnings: Death (discussed), sexual content, infidelity (technically?)
One-shot set in the time between saving Jack from the Locker and the crew getting home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “You thought I loved him.” Understanding dawned in Elizabeth, and on its heels, anger. How dare he? And yet, saying the words aloud, something in her was shaken. She tried to push past him to the stairs, ready to storm off to cover her sudden unsteadiness, but he grabbed her by the arm and pushed her up against a pillar.
“If you make your choices alone…how can I trust you?” Will growled in a low voice.
“You can’t,” she answered, her voice barely above a whisper. She pushed against him again and this time he let her go - she thought she heard him say something else, but she needed to escape this moment and did not turn back.
“You forgot to deny it.” Will sighed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She’d been expecting the fight since Jack had revealed her betrayal on the shores of the Locker. She hadn’t expected to learn that Will had seen the kiss and thought her disloyal this whole time. She hadn’t expected her heart to throb so mightily when “…I loved him” passed her lips. Almost dizzy with confusion and a vague sort of fear, she scrambled blindly to the deck, drifting to the bow. Without a moment’s hesitation, the need to put as much distance between herself and Will propelling her forward, she clambered over the railing and tucked herself into the tiny space behind the figurehead. If she fell asleep and slid off into the water below, well, that would just solve everyone’s problems including her own. She leaned back against the Pearl and was lost to her demons.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack watched as Elizabeth all but fled the hold. His eyes followed her until she disappeared toward the bow, then snapped back to see Will emerge from below as well. He looked around for a moment but turned back when he didn’t catch sight of Elizabeth and vanished again. Interesting.
Jack hadn’t planned to speak to her so soon, maybe ever again if he was honest, but the prospect of trouble in paradise created a ghost of hope in him. He followed Elizabeth’s path, looking for her in the many nooks and crannies along the way - she tended to hide the way a cat might when she was feeling emotional - until he ran out of ship. He was confused for only the briefest of moments before spotting her wedged behind the Pearl’s black angel. She was staring out at the horizon, he thought, face covered in ocean spray, but looking closer - no…she was gazing at the sparrow in the angel’s hand, and those were tears falling fast and hard from her eyes. His gut twisted. He considered walking away; that probably would’ve been the smart thing (you’re a smart man, Jack echoing in his head like a taunt). He’d never been particularly smart about his behavior around Elizabeth, though. He stepped forward.
“Lizzie.”
The quiet voice that broke through her thoughts was the last one she expected. She sat up so quickly she almost fell right off, but managed to catch herself and turned to face the man she thought might never forgive her. Jack was looking at her with an expression she couldn’t name, and it made her already troubled heart leap to her throat.
“Jack, what -” she swiped her hands across her face in an attempt to hide her weakness. He moved toward her and extended a hand.
"Why don't you come back over the railing, darling, there's a good lass," he said, concern hidden behind false condescension. She silently took his hand and did as asked, avoiding his gaze. He didn't know what to think about that - her lack of arguing, her quiet obedience. This wasn't right. Far be it from him not to take advantage, though. She tried to let go of his hand, but he only held on tighter. "Come with me." Wordlessly he led her to his quarters, not dropping her hand until he'd closed the doors behind them. After a second's hesitation, he also locked them, wanting to be absolutely certain they weren't going to be interrupted. He turned around to see her gazing at the hand he'd held. Something in his chest squeezed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She braced herself for whatever was coming. She would've expected vitriol, hate, if not for his gentleness. He called me Lizzie. Why had he held her hand? She couldn't handle kindness, not from Jack, not right now. Not after what she'd done. Not after what she was in the process of realizing, which made what she'd done that much worse.
"Jack, if you're looking for an apology, you won't get it." The words were defiant, but her voice was dull. She was trying to goad him into anger because anger she could take. Anger, well. That was the minimum she deserved from the man she'd left to die.
"Oh, Lizzie. I would never expect one." Jack grinned as he led her to his bed, urging her to sit. He pulled over a chair to sit across from her. "You did what you are best at." She flinched and closed her eyes, ready for any venomous insult he may throw at her. She decided she'd help him along.
"Yes, I suppose to you that would seem the truth. You've always seen me as just a woman, treacherous." She didn't even know fully what she was saying, she was just trying to piss him off until he felt comfortable truly letting his tongue loose. What she got instead was the shock of her life as Jack dropped to his knees in front of her, an intensity in his eyes and a dead seriousness to his tone that she'd never experienced before.
"No, luv. No. First of all, you're far from 'just a woman,' point blank but 'specially to me. Secondly, and I need you to know this in your bones - " he grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him, now. "What you are best at," he spoke slowly and purposefully, "is fighting for the greater good. Don't get me wrong, you're no saint, but you are good. You believe in justice, and while you have your own way of getting there, you have always chosen what is right over what is easy. When you chained me to the mast and left me for the Kraken, you did the right thing." He paused for a moment, and Elizabeth choked back a sob.
"Jack...Jack, as soon as I closed that manacle on your wrist, something in me broke. And even now, even after going to hell to get you back, knowing what it was like for you there, knowing how much I'd hurt myself by doing so, you should know that I would do it all again if given another chance." She buried her face in her hands, unconsciously clinging to his, still touching her chin. "I love you and I'd still do it again,” she finally confessed the truth she’d been grappling with since Will accused her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The words he'd never expected to hear from Elizabeth Swann's mouth left Jack utterly shattered. The whole time she'd been speaking he'd been falling harder for her - of course she'd do it again, and he was so achingly proud of her for that, but love him? Her? Love him? For a heartbeat his thoughts were in chaos while he fought to convince himself that he’d heard wrong. All of that dissolved away when he felt her tears on his skin, and suddenly everything seemed crystal clear.
In one swift motion, he came up off his knees, wrapped an arm around her waist, tilted her face to his, and caught her in a crushing kiss. She was frozen beneath him, and he broke it off quickly, afraid of damaging whatever fragile trust she may have in him. He began to pull away, but Elizabeth grabbed the front of his shirt to stop him. Incredulity etched her face, eyes wide and questioning, mouth still slightly open.
“Jack?” His name was barely audible, and he felt the weight of a thousand questions in the single word. He rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes, heart in his throat as he prepared to say what he’d previously sworn to never admit.
“Elizabeth, I have loved you since Isla de Muerta. I didn’t realize it until the day you stood on my deck and called me a good man, and the only thought in my mind was that you were wrong…but that for you, I wanted to be.” He held her a bit tighter. “When I realized what you’d done, that you were willing to sacrifice me, I was completely lost. When I called you pirate, it was in awe and reverence, and I was absolutely content to die.”
Silence stretched between them. He felt like he was treading water, unsure if he would be thrown a line or left to drown. He’d never felt for anyone what he felt for Elizabeth, and had never planned to tell anyone, much less her. But she was suffering, and he couldn’t let that continue. He’d take the fallout if she’d only understand that he would never see her as anything less than the most perfect thing on the seven seas. That didn’t mean he wasn’t terrified of her reaction, though.
He’d nearly decided this had all been a terrible mistake when she placed her hands on either side of his face and brought her lips to his.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She kissed him like she was drowning and he was oxygen, and he kissed her like she was the sea and he wanted nothing more than to sink into her depths. There was no more said between them for quite a while - words would be necessary later, but right now, all they needed was each other.
Elizabeth poured her soul into that kiss, damned as she felt it was, and clung to her captain as he pressed her back onto the bed. Some part of her knew this was wrong, but she had never felt anything more right.
Jack was cradling her, allowing every possible part of their bodies to touch without putting too much of his weight on her. His hands drifted constantly; stroking her face, running through her hair, floating down her sides to her hips. Responding to his touch more on instinct than conscious thought, she spread her legs to accommodate him better, tucking one knee up. A calloused hand gripped her thigh and she moaned softly. Jack finally broke their kiss, face strained.
“Lizzie, darling. I think we should - well, maybe think a little before we go much further.” It sounded like it pained him to say this, and Elizabeth felt lightning in her blood at the thought of what he was implying. He was right, of course. There was so much that made this a bad idea - there was Will to consider, and the fact that they hadn’t quite escaped the land of the dead yet, which was such a strange thing to remember since she felt more alive than she ever had. Stopping now would be the smart thing, but her body was alight with desires she’d barely known she was capable of, and hang the smart thing. She was just starting to protest when they heard a commotion on deck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack saw the fight brewing in her eyes and knew he’d lose it spectacularly. It had taken everything he had to pause in the first place. Luckily for the both of them, something seemed to be happening outside, and Lizzie squirmed out from under him to run and see what was going on, snagging a pistol on her way. He grinned - there she was, his warrior - and took a few deep breaths before rolling off the bed to follow her.
The sight that met him was a bizarre one indeed, though maybe it shouldn’t have been, given their locale. Souls. Souls in the water of those lost to the depths. The shades that Davy Jones was supposed to care for, to ferry to the other side, lost in this between place instead. He frowned as he noticed the children. Far be it from him to claim righteousness, but it did make him angry.
He heard Lizzie’s voice and turned to follow it. When he reached the railing, he felt his heart crack. Governor Swann was sitting in one of the small boats, and Jack knew instantly what that meant.
“It’s my father! We’ve made it back!” Lizzie called out to him, trying to get his attention.
“Elizabeth.” Voice soft and gentle, hating himself for what must come next. “We’re not back.” His hand brushed hers, barely. That faint, fluttering touch was the best he could do to convey the sorrow that would have to go unspoken. He watched the joy drain from her face, the desperate denial creep up to replace it. She turned away from him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following days were desolate. Even the sea and the weather seemed to be in mourning as they passed into an endless doldrums. Jack didn’t try to go to Lizzie; she had enough to deal with, and maybe this grief would help her and Will find each other again. He thought back to that night, how she had screamed, how she had fought to leap into the water and save her father, how she had collapsed into Will's arms, sobbing. How they had sunk to the deck while Will comforted her - Will, not him, because that was how it should be. She had chosen Will long before she'd met him, and that was where she belonged.
It was so blasted difficult to stay away though when she looked so broken. He didn't know what to do, knew he couldn't fix this, but that didn't change the fact that he wished he could. He wished he could take her pain away, heal her, but there was nothing he could do. So he threw himself into figuring out the map instead.
He was working on it in his quarters the third night after the ghostly visitors when the door opened and someone came in. Someone who crossed the room almost silently to sit in the chair opposite him at his desk. He looked up to see Lizzie curled up and examining the map. She must have noticed his hands had stilled, because her eyes flicked up to meet his.
"Is it okay if I'm here?" She asked, almost hesitantly. In answer, Jack turned and pulled a bottle of rum out of one of the desk drawers. He passed it to her and watched with a small amount of concern as she drained almost half of it in one pull.
"It's okay," he said, "but I am curious as to why you've come." He kept his voice even, not wanting her to realize how her closeness affected him.
"I didn't want to be alone," she replied, like it was the simplest thing in the world.
"What about Will?" He could've kicked himself for asking, but it was a valid question, and she knew it as well as he did. She averted her gaze. "Ah. Trouble?" He leaned forward slightly, not wishing further pain on her, but curious all the same. He'd never gotten around to asking her what the original problem had been the other night. Other things had distracted him.
"Will and I...I've lost him, I think, Jack." She met his eyes again and seemed to steel herself. "Not that I put that much effort into keeping him, truth be told." Jack's stomach flipped, but he waited for her to continue. "The other night, when you came and found me, I - he accused me of being in love with you. And I couldn't even deny it, because I realized that it was true." Her eyes held fire now, and a new urgency crept into her voice. "Jack. I love you. You. Far more than you could believe possible."
Jack could hardly breathe. This was so much more than he'd ever dared to hope for. Yes, she'd said the words the other night, and they had certainly crossed a line, but he had been content to believe she'd merely felt guilty. Or that she'd snapped out of it when faced with reality again. He hadn't expected her to come back to him again.
"Lizzie. Are you sure?"
"I am more sure of this than anything else in my entire life."
That was all he needed. Jack pushed away from the desk and stood, coming around to sweep Lizzie into his arms. Their lips met as a roar filled his ears, and he spun in the direction of the bed, intent on finishing what he'd started this time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elizabeth found herself stripping layers from Jack like she'd done it a hundred times. In truth, she'd probably imagined it that much, if not more. He was making quick work of her clothes as well, though he undoubtedly had much more experience in this arena than she. Somehow, though, that didn't seem to matter to her. She wasn't worried. She just wanted him, and it was impossible to ignore that he wanted her, too. When she'd freed him of his shirt she began peppering his chest with kisses, flicking her tongue out to taste his deeply tanned skin. She felt his breath hitch and smiled to herself. No, she wasn't worried about her lack of experience.
They were now sitting on the bed, both of them naked. Jack held her at arm's length for a moment and she watched as his eyes slowly traveled her body. She felt heat, so much heat, everywhere his eyes touched. That was nothing compared to what was coming, though. He laid her back with the utmost gentleness and promptly started to explore her body with hands and mouth, pausing occasionally to check that she was still okay. She appreciated the care, but he was driving her absolutely mad, and -
"Is this okay?" He asked as he kissed his way down her belly to the tops of her thighs.
"Jack, if you don't stop talking and get on with it, I'll make you regret the day you were born," she growled. He chuckled darkly and hovered over her, eyes glittering.
"Persuade me."
"You're despicable."
"You're a goddess."
"Goddess? There is nothing holy happening in this room." Her tone was one of amusement, and she gazed at him with heavy eyes, a smile dancing on her lips.
"Just you wait, dearie. I'll redefine holy for you." With that, he dipped his head and showed her the meaning of worship.
Let’s just see
Sooo I just wanna give you all this small preview see if you all even a bit like this. Please let me know what you think.  A Pirate’s Life for Me; Beetlejuice Pirates of the Caribbean Preview  ~ “There you go, Miss.” Barbara said as she slid the bed warmer under the several blankets that were tucked over the lady of the house. Lydia had been escorted home after Commodore Strong had asked her for the millionth time if she was alright. A bath had been immediately drawn for her and only when she had four cups of tea in her did her father cease his fussing. It was when he left the manor to return to the fort, did she feel that she could finally breathe.
“It was quite the day for you for sure.” Her maid went on and Lydia put down her book as she leaned back against the pillows. She merely smiled as the day flashed about her thoughts before she hummed.
“Well truth be told I suspected the Commodore to propose, but I still wasn’t entirely prepared for it.” Literally and figuratively, apparently. The more she thought of it, the more she was convinced that her body had been waiting for him to ask the question before she had lost consciousness, just so she wouldn’t have to answer. It made her laugh as she was sure that wasn’t the case, but she couldn’t help wishing it was just that.
“Miss, I meant you being apprehended by that pirate, it sounds dreadful.” Barbara added as she shuffled along the blankets making sure they were secure around her Misses. Lydia’s face fell as she suddenly remembered that she had indeed been in the arms of a pirate today.
“Oh…” Lyds commented as she nodded recalling the roughened hands pressing into her skin. His honey tone of mockery echoing in her pierced ear. Then those eyes. The description she had read about had failed to mention how haunting and beau- “Yes, it was …it was dreadful.” It wouldn’t do to finish that thought it was better to let the thoughts go.
“But the Commodore proposed!” Barbara gushed excitedly. “Now that’s a smart match, Miss, if it’s not too bold to say.”
“It is…” Lydia replied as she settled against the bed, but her eyes didn’t hold any excitement, nor did any part of her. She sighed as she realized she would eventually have to give Berthold an answer, if she could even figure out an answer to give. “He’s a …Well, he’s what every woman should imagine to marry.”
“Well, if I may,” Barbara hummed as she double checked that the lantern was good for the night.  “…that Dominic Orion, he’s a fine man who fancy’s you as well.”
“Ha,” Lydia giggled as she rolled her eyes and good naturally shook her head. She closed her book losing disinterest in it as she fixed her maid with a dispassionate gaze. “Yes, Dominic is kind, but I don’t feel what he feels for me. He’s more my brother than anything. If those two are my choices of who is supposed to take my hand, then I rather not make the choice at all.”
“Yes, Miss.” Barbara nodded letting her misses have her thoughts despite how innocent they may be. She would have to marry at some time, and it might do her better to marry the fellow whom she considered her brother than a man she had no feelings for at all. It wasn’t her place to say so instead she left the room after bidding the lady a final goodnight. ~ So just a small part but I just wanna get an idea of what you all think? Please let me know.
The Choice
Fandom: Pirates of The Caribbean
Type: Canon Divergence, Fix-It
Ships: Sparrabeth (Jack Sparrow / Elizabeth Swann)
Willabeth (Will Turner / Elizabeth Swann)
Ao3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30064740
Summary: “I’ve made my choice, now what’s yours?”
What if she chose not to answer him then? What if she waited to see the end of the battle? What difference could that one choice make?
The Choice
“Elizabeth!” William yelled to her in the midst of battle. “Elizabeth,” he repeated, close to her as he’d found the briefest of moments for them to pause “will you marry me?”
She dodged an attack, continuing to fight for her life, sword clashing with one of the enemy’s. “I don’t think now’s the best time!”
“Now may be the only time!” He called back after slitting the throat of his competitor, only for another to step in less than a moment’s pause later. “I love you.” He told her when they could spare a second to meet eyes again, up close. And after another brief intermission in which they both fought he said “I’ve made my choice, now what’s yours?”
She was suddenly put on the spot with little to no time to think. What could she say? What could be done? She didn’t know, she had no time to think. “There’s no time!” She responded unable to think of any other reasonable option at the moment. She’d make her choice once things calmed down. “When this is all over-“ she began to say before having to reconcentrate her efforts on the battle.
••POV Change - Jack••
Jack watched with heart and dagger in hand as Will Turner was run through the chest by Davy Jones just a few feet in front of him. For a moment the world froze and he found himself unable to do what he’d been planning to do all this time. Why couldn’t he do it? It would end all their problems, all this fighting, right now if he could just stab the heart.
“Will! Will, look at me!” Not all their problems would be solved, he realized. He could hear the desperation in Elizabeth’s voice, see the sorrow and grief already taking form to mar her features. She would be thrust into mourning any moment now and the idea of seeing Elizabeth cry didn’t sit well with Jack. Despite their past issues he wouldn’t ever wish to see her so upset. He had to make a choice. His own mortality or William’s?
Thinking quickly he took a knee next to his fallen acquaintance and pressed the dagger firmly into Will’s palm. For Elizabeth, he’d decided. Quick as a lightning strike he helped guide the blade into the heart. In an instant the battles onboard grew quiet. Davy Jones muttered the name of his beloved goddess and fell lifeless into the sea, his crew all but dropped their weapons.
He was sure he’d made the right decision until a glance at Miss Swann’s face gave him pause. She looked so heartbroken, almost more so than before. She looked at him with a helplessness he’d never seen in her before.
“Part of the crew, part of the ship.”
Jack took in their surroundings, watching The Flying Dutchman’s undead crew begin to circle in around them, chanting ominously. He realized what was due to happen next. He had to get Elizabeth out of here. She shouldn’t witness what would be done to her William.
“Part of the crew, part of the ship.”
He yanked her back quite forcefully, turning her away from the horror scene that was about to unfold. She fought him, tears streaming down her face, but he held her firmly in place.
“Don’t look.” He told her quite sternly when she almost managed to slip away, his face pale and eyes wide from what he was seeing himself. “Trust, Lizzie! You don’t want to look.” Even to himself it sounded desperate, so unlike himself. Then again in all his years of pirating he’d never seen anything quite so gruesome as a living man having his heart carved out.
She gave in and collapsed against his shoulder.
———
“Why?” She asked him moments later as they descended through the air with the aid of one of The Dutchman’s sails. Her voice was quiet and shaky, her face was buried against his chest. “Why him?”
‘You. Always you.’ He opted not to say, because how could he? That would be admitting too much, and she was much too vulnerable right then to hear such an answer anyway. But it was true. Any time Captain Jack Sparrow chose to be selfless, to be a good man, it was for her. On occasion that made him a fool, but Gods be damned if it wasn’t worth it! She deserved so much and he could give her so little.
He thought he recalled hearing a marriage proposal in the heat of the battle, right around the time that he’d obtained the heart. A marriage proposal that had gone nowhere and was left unanswered due to poor timing. “You deserved the ability to make a proper choice, Luv.” He told her. She couldn’t very well marry a dead man.
She didn’t respond.
••POV Change - Elizabeth••
They watched the East India Trading Company retreat over the horizon and celebrated. The Flying Dutchman sailed alongside The Black Pearl.
“Elizabeth!” She heard William call from his new ship. She turned and they locked eyes. He smiled wide and she felt her heart flip in her chest.
There was a gangplank bridging between the two ships not five minutes later and she would cross over to speak with him. She would make the most difficult decision of her lifetime.
••POV Change - William••
He watched as she climbed back aboard The Black Pearl, tears in her eyes, tears in his own. It hurt watching her walk away, but he understood her reasonings.
He couldn’t blame her for her decision. This isn’t what he’d expected to happen when he proposed. Despite his want to save his father, he was sure Jack would’ve taken the curse for himself given the opportunity. During the time when he proposed to Elizabeth he’d almost been counting on it, but sometimes life throws you an unexpected curve and you have to just work with the consequences, terrible as they may be.
If his heart were still in his chest he no doubt would’ve felt the ache and weight of the conversation they just had. If he wasn’t already a cursed man that surely would’ve been his end. He was just glad they were still able to agree to meet again in a decade’s time.
He placed a hand over his chest and grew discomforted with himself when he couldn’t feel a beat.
••POV Change - Jack••
There was a quiet knock on the Captain’s cabin door late in the evening. Most of the crew had already decided to bunk down by then and so Jack was led to wonder who it could be.
Of all people he didn’t expect to see Elizabeth on the other side. “Lizzie…” he greeted. “What are you doing here?” She held up a bottle of rum in offering and he found himself letting her in. “I would’ve thought you’d be honeymooning right ‘bout now.” He commented once the door was closed. He leaned lightly on the edge of his desk, deciding on keeping far away from the more intimate areas of his quarters.
She stood semi-awkwardly in the middle of the room and uncorked the bottle with her teeth. “I didn’t accept his proposal.” She told him.
“Oh…” he didn’t know what to say. He’d half expected this outcome simply by knowing the free-spirit Elizabeth had become, but right now he was stunned. Had she really given up her chances with William so easily?
She appeared abnormally calm about the matter. He’d thought there would be more feelings with this outcome… though perhaps she’d worn herself out. Today had been a lot as it was. Maybe she was feeling a sort of numbness. He’d felt that before. A pirate's life was filled with long nights where nothing seemed to go right.
“I couldn't, it wouldn’t be practical.” She chose to explain further. He nodded along as he watched her take a long draw of the spirit.
“Because of the curse?” He asked as she handed the drink his way. When she merely nodded he chanced a “But I thought you loved him?”
She hesitated to answer for a moment, as if it were more complicated than simply a yes or no. “Yes… I-I do love Will... but I can’t waste my life waiting for him to come to me. I…. I need to free, Jack. I need to be able to move forwards with my life.”
He could certainly understand that. Elizabeth blossomed best when facing the wind, an adventure on the horizon before her. She looked her best with sun kissed skin and golden waves in her hair, wearing clothing that didn’t suffocate her. There was a wondrous fire that burned in her soul when she stood at the helm and it deserved to continue to roar.
“Aye.” He agreed with a nod and the ghost of an approving grin. “Well, I recall once telling you that The Pearl is freedom. I welcome you to stay aboard her for as long as you seek it.”
“Thank you, I appreciate the offer.”
She didn’t stay much longer after that. They chatted a little here and there about pointless topics, small talk, about next decisions, all the while taking turns swallowing mouthfuls of rum until Jack decided he should send her off to bed.
At first she seemed hesitant to agree, it almost seemed as if she had wanted to stay, but she gave in easily enough and wished him a goodnight.
———
The feelings came back to her in a violent crash just a few days later. She came to him in the night again, this time with tears in her eyes and arms hugging her chest. He led her to the window settee and offered her the comfort she was so obviously seeking.
She once again cried against his chest about her lost love. She feared she made the wrong choice.
“Hey now Liz, don’t say that…” he soothed, rubbing small circles between her shoulders. “You made the best decision you could for yourself, Luv. You said it yourself, ye can’t sit around waiting on a man who can’t be there for you…”
She nodded through her sniffles and sobs “I-I sup-suppose…” she took a steadying breath that did very little to actually calm her. “I-I just can’t help thinking of what could’ve been.”
He hummed an affirmation. “Aye, I feel you there. Everybody in this world wishes for something to have turned out differently…”
Another sniffle “I-I find myself thinking this would be simpler if he were merely dead. Sorrow seems a lesser darkness.”
That revelation shocked Jack. She’d rather William be dead? He placed his hands on her shoulders and pushed her back just far enough to see her face. “Now, you can’t really mean that…”
“But it’s true!” She sobbed. “If he were dead, I wouldn’t be feeling such guilt, such regret, such a loss of hope! I would still be heartbroken, yes, but that would be all!”
“But you would never see him again. Certainly once a decade is better than never at all?”
“I’m not sure, Jack.” She whimpered, shaking her head. “What if every time I see him it just reopens these wounds? However am I to properly move on?”
He shrugged his shoulders truly at a loss. “You’ll find a way.” He told her, pulling her back into his embrace. “As you always do.”
Shortly after he decided to get them a drink, and then another. She wound up drinking herself into quite a state that night and he couldn’t be careless enough to leave her alone. She stayed the night, snoring lightly on his settee.
••POV change - Narrator(?)••
The night visits started becoming a regular habit. A couple days a week she would come to him, to speak of her feelings or her days.
It was only the third visit when she found that she trusted him with her life and expressed her guilt for betraying him earlier that year and feeding him to the Kraken.
“Don’t worry about it, Luv. I already forgave you.”
He’d always comfort her on the nights she’d need it and on the nights she didn’t things seemed lighter and fun. They would talk and joke, make quips and tease each other much like they used to but with less venom and mockery.
They became good friends.
———
It was only a few months later when Jack realized he trusted her too, and that it likely wouldn’t change again, Pirate or no.
They shared private tales and secrets, delving more into conversations about him and his past, his feelings, his guilts.
The roles reversed those nights and she’d comfort him if he needed it.
••POV Change - Jack••
When trust and emotions are shared between men and women, love often follows, as such are the conditions for it to bloom.
Not even a year after Will was out of the picture Elizabeth came to Jack in the night to admit she’d developed some amount of romantic feelings for her captain.
He’d not known what to say. It was no secret that he’d been pining after Miss Swann almost since the moment he’d met her, but he’d always considered it purely sexual. Thinking about it now however made him uncomfortable when he realized it wasn’t that simple.The case of his feeling towards Elizabeth was more complicated than he’d imagined and had been for some time apparently.
He did something most unexpected of him and asked for time to think on it. After all, he had never been his thing to stay involved with a woman longer than a few nights. He didn’t know how to fit love into his life.
She left him to it.
———
They shared their first proper kiss four days after her admission, no ulterior motives, only the simplicity of appreciating another’s precious company. Simple and sweet, something usually unheard of from Jack Sparrow, but he thought he might change- only slightly- for her.He didn’t want to ruin whatever had happened between them too soon. He’d realized he liked the idea of her being his and remaining by his side.
She stayed in his cabin again that night, cuddled up by his side, her head tucked under his chin and his heart beating loud in her ear.
Gibbs found them in the morning, Jack still asleep and Lizzie playing idly with his hair. He asked no questions, only accepted that it may be something he’d have to get used to.
••POV change - William••
A decade is an odd time frame to watch go by. It feels long as you live it. You watch over three thousand days trickle by and it seems as if the cycle is endless, but then one day all of a sudden you realize ten years have passed and you wonder just where the time has gone. A goodbye that seems like just yesterday happened ages ago, and people you once planned a future with have moved on without you.
William steps off the gangplank of The Flying Dutchman onto a tiny dock of little known fishing island and sees a vision of a future that never was. There stood Elizabeth, the love of his younger years and quite possibly his life, upon the hill watching two young children play about in the sand. The silhouette of a man seated beneath a tree. He calls her name and everyone stops to look his way.
The children ran over first, excitedly. They took in his ship with wide eyes. “Woah!” Remarked the oldest, a girl dressed in boys clothing, hair long and pulled into a messy but still beautiful french braid. She appeared around the age of seven. “Is this your ship? She’s a bloody beaut, innit Jackie?”
The younger, a small boy no older than four nodded excessively. “She’s a beaut!” He exclaimed, mimicking his sister with a grin.
William, a little uncomfortable with how casually adult-sounding the girl had spoken to him, only nodded awkwardly. “Will Turner, Captain of The Flying Dutchman.” He introduced himself with an offered hand.
The girl took his hand and shook it confidently and with much power for a girl her age. “Jocelyn Sparrow, but you can call me Joss.” She then gestured to the boy “That’s my brother, Jackie.” The boy, upon being named, grinned wider.
Will for a moment couldn’t believe his ears. “Sparrow?” He asked in disbelief as he glanced up towards their mother who’d just arrived at the scene, a certain pirate trailing not too far behind her.
“Oi there, Beasties, let the whelp get his land-legs back, savvy? Scamper off.”
“But Papa-“ Jocelyn began pointing at The Flying Dutchman, her little brother imitated her and also pointed at the ship.
“No ‘but’s to your captain, I said ‘scamper off’. Now, shoo, let the adults talk.”
The children pouted but listened to their father, running off to continue the game they’d been playing earlier. They picked up a couple sticks and began a mock sword fight.
Jack sidled up next to Elizabeth and wrapped an arm snugly around her waist and William felt his jealousy flair.
“So you two, huh?” He said, a little tension in his voice. “You got married, had a couple pups… things look like they’re going swimmingly, ” He was trying not to let his upset shine through but he couldn’t stop himself from ending the sentence with “without me.”
Elizabeth seemed startled. “Will, you knew I would have to move on… I told you as such…”
“Yes, but, I didn’t think you meant with him!” He bursted. “Is he the reason you didn’t accept my proposal?” He looked to Jack then. “You stole her from me!” He accused him.
“I bloody saved your life if you don’t remember!” Jack spat back. “So don’t you get all cross at me, mate. She made the big decisions!” He said gesturing toward his wife.
“And when it came down to it I couldn’t spend my life waiting for my husband to come home.” Elizabeth explained, tone firm and claiming situational authority. “That would be giving up too much of who I am. I loved you, William,” her voice softened as she said those last four words. “But I needed to be free. I needed someone who would be there with me, and that couldn’t be you…. Perhaps we were never meant to be.”
“The Elizabeth I knew would never have said that…” he replied bitterly.
“Yes, and the William I knew was a humble blacksmith’s apprentice. People change.” She returned, tone equally sharp, sensing his sour behaviour wouldn’t change.
“Indeed they do…” was all William said in return, expression dark at the same time it was blank. He turned and climbed back aboard The Dutchman without another word.
The seas had once known Davy Jones’ heartbroken wrath, and now they would know Will Turner’s.
Beta-readers wanted
Tumblr media
Currently working on a pirates of the caribbean fanfiction. It's a big project (already 100 pages, and not finished) and I'm very excited about it, but English is not my mother tongue and I have no betas in this language so I dare not post it online with no corrections...
Is there some of you who want to have a good time reading a new story and who are generous enough to give some advice or tell me if there are any mistakes ?
You'd have all my gratitude!
A good day to you and long life to this wonderful Fandom.
wendy’s great big pirates of the caribbean fic rec list
Hello, friends!  I’ve been meaning to make a Pirates fic rec list for years and the day has finally come.  This list is obviously in no way exhaustive and is very much indicative of my personal biases (*cough* lots of Norrington *cough*), but I can heartily recommend every fic that made this list and I hope you all enjoy it.  Making this was a labor of love and I would be thrilled to hear your thoughts on any you choose to read (though you should leave a kind comment for the author first)!
Other notes: I collected the bulk of these years ago, so there are a lot on FFnet and I have tried my best to screen them for various content warnings.  I believe only two fics on this list are explicit and are marked as such.  There is precious little slash on this list since that’s just not what I tended to read at the height of my Pirates phase; my apologies.
Under a cut to spare your dashes from this monster of a post.
“Mutiny on the Dauntless” by Marnie - Governor Swann and Lieutenant Norrington narrowly skirt disaster at the hands of a ruthless captain and dangerous crew on the crossing from England. [19k words. No ships. Warnings: seasickness, battle violence, minor character death, semi-graphic naval discipline.]
THE HONORAT COLLECTION in (hopefully) chronological order.  This author is my uncontested favorite Pirates of the Caribbean fic writer and I’m forever grateful to them.  Here’s to you, @honorat!
“Here’s Luck To You” - A collection of drabbles about Jack and Bootstrap Bill’s friendship, written in late 2005. [6k. Mind any posted warnings.]
“Homecoming” - Author’s summary: The young Captain Norrington has a rare moment alone with his beloved ship.  [1k.  No ships but the sailing kind.  No warnings.]
“Daring Rescue, Daring Escape” - A narration of Elizabeth's rescue following her tumble off the battlement and of Jack's attempted escape afterward.  [7k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  No warnings.]
“Worthy of His Steel” - Picks up where DR,DE left off, then flashes back to Will’s apprenticeship with Mr. Brown.  [44k.  Light Willabeth.  Mind any warnings: I remember minor character death, alcoholism, and general angst.]
“A Bargain At Any Price” - Elizabeth reflects on James’ interrupted marriage proposal.  [968 words.  Unrequited Norribeth.  No warnings.]
“Marooned” - A movie novelization of the time Jack and Elizabeth spent on Rumrunner’s Isle.  (If you haven’t seen the deleted scenes from CotBP, they’re now required viewing: Part 1, Part 2.)  [28k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  Warnings: alcohol; discussion of past injuries including burns, a brand, and a gunshot; discussion of death, murder, and suicide (latter related only to marooning and not seriously entertained or acted upon); mind any others.]
“Aboard the Dauntless” - Takes place directly after Marooned.  More movie/deleted scene novelization.  [20k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth and/or (unrequited) Norribeth.  Mind any warnings.]
“No Mercy” - Set aboard the Dauntless just after the battle at Isla de Muerta.  Have you ever been unreasonably hecked up by the sailor who rang the bell when he spotted zombie pirates?  I have because I’m Like That but now you can be too!  [1k.  No ships.  Warnings: blood, minor character death, funeral, survivor’s guilt, mention of execution by hanging.]
“For Remembrance” - Elizabeth visits Jack in prison the day before his pending execution.  [2k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  Warnings: brief mention of unsanitary prison conditions; death tokens; discussion of death, murder, and execution by hanging.]
“Balance of Justice” - The same night, Norrington struggles with the idea of Jack’s pending execution.  [990 words.  No ships.  Warnings: mentioned minor character death, survivor’s guilt, discussion of execution by hanging.]
“Crossing the Bar” - My all-time favorite PotC fanfic.  After the events of CotBP, Norrington thinks he has Jack cornered, but the pirate has other ideas.  A story of truly literary proportions ensues. [156k.  Canon divergent: written pre-DMC.  Light Jack/Anamaria.  Warnings: battle injuries, period-accurate first aid, minor character death. Other warnings posted in fic.]
“Just Between Us Dying Gods” -  Jack’s POV, takes place on the island of the Pelegostos just prior to Will's arrival.  [1k.  No ships.  Warnings: cannibalism, canon-typical ethnocentrism.]
“Bits of Shine” - A collection of drabbles (in the classic 100-word sense) spanning Pirates 1-3.  [14k.  Assorted canon ships.  Mind any posted warnings.]
“Christmas Reunion” - Author’s description: A Christmas reunion of several beloved characters set post-AWE. Jack's POV. Entirely fluffy.  [2k.  Willabeth.  No warnings.]
SCRUFFINGTON ANGST - Me, aged 15: but sir that’s my emotional support Good-ish Man Brought Low By Hubris (who am I kidding, that hasn’t changed a bit).  As you would expect, general warnings for this section might include minor character death, survivor’s guilt, self-hatred, alcohol abuse, unsanitary conditions, etc.  If you love Tortuga-related angst, this section is for you!  If you don’t go for whump and other unpleasant things, scroll on.
“Seven Deadly Sins: James Norrington” by Edoraslass - Classic drabble format, exactly what it says on the bottle.  Follows James’ DMC arc beginning in Tortuga.  [711 words.  No ships.  See tags on AO3.]
“Three Days” by geekmama - Several scene narrations following James from the pig sty to Isla Cruces.  Smelly bastard man.  [1k.  Several unrequited ships.  Warnings: unsanitary, alcohol abuse.]
“Interregnum: Icarus” by ConcertiGrossi - Follows James all the way from the hurricane to Tortuga, with an epilogue just after delivering the Heart to Beckett.  I dislike headcanons about Norrington ever employing sex workers - it seems very out-of-character to me - but other than that I stand by this fic.  Angst alert.   [16k.  Canon-divergent only if you read Sins of the Father.  Referenced unrequited Norribeth.  Warnings: near-drowning, vomit, mass minor character death, implied (but ultimately untrue) medium character death, funerals, survivor’s guilt, self-hatred, unsanitary, coughing, nightmares, pregnancy mention, parental death, under-eating, alcohol abuse, referenced suicide, suicidal ideation.]
“Birthday Wishes” by YouCantGetThereFromHere - A one-shot AU in which James has a twin brother and they celebrate their thirtieth birthdays, one in England, the other in Tortuga.  [4k.  Referenced OCxOC ship in the first half.  Warnings: alcohol abuse, self-hatred.]
“Eye of the Storm” by Edoraslass - Tortuga barmaid Kate is intrigued by the island’s newest barfly and strikes up a sort of friendship with Norrington until he moves on.  [4k.  No ships.  See tags on AO3.]
“Oil and Wine” by Argyle - Norrington’s descent during his time on Tortuga.  Everything comes with a price and a familiar face dogs his steps.  [500 words.  Norribeth.  See tags on AO3.]
“Absence and Memory” by Meddow - Post-CotBP, Elizabeth reflects on her relationship with Norrington over the years.  [3.7k.  Norribeth.  No warnings.]
“Penance More Will Do” by Meddow - Set directly after the hurricane.  While a wounded James is adrift at sea, he is visited by Hector Barbossa, who gives him a choice on behalf of Calypso.  [5.7k.  No ships.  Warnings: blood, vomit.]
“A Song for the Wretched and the Wrecked” by jadeddiva - Post-CotBP AU in which Will runs off to sea and Elizabeth consents to marry James after all.  They have a lot of growing to do, but it ends well.  [6.5k.  Norribeth.  No warnings.]
“Jack Sparrow’s Black Pearl” by Zath_Chauvert - A filk song in which Elizabeth and Will discuss Jack to the tune of “Tango: Maureen”.  [468 words.  Willabeth, J/W/E if you’re not a coward.  No warnings.]
“Of How a Lieutenant died at Sea” by YouCantGetThereFromHere - Foregoing the ending he's given in OST, Lt. Theodore Groves instead dies in the wreckage of the Endeavour in AWE and briefly greets Will in the afterlife.  [703 words.  No ships.  Warnings: implied major character death.]
THE ERINYA COLLECTION (I forgot that I saved a ton from this author as well!  Not arranged in any particular order.)
“Curiosity” - Elizabeth reflects on her growing feelings for Jack during DMC.  [828 words.  Sparrabeth.  Warnings: alcohol.]
“Sacrifice” - More Sparrabeth UST, Elizabeth’s POV.  [527 words.  Sparrabeth.  No warnings.]
“One Shot” - A collection of PotC drabbles, all written pre-AWE.  [6k.  Various pairings.  Warnings posted in fic.]
“The Game” - Jack and Tia Dalma play cards.  [600 words.  Can be read as Jack/Tia Dalma.  No warnings.]
“Frayed” - Will and Elizabeth, post-DMC, semi-compliant with AWE, but angstier.  I’m afraid this one isn’t very kind to Will but it sets up this author’s character dynamics/reasons for Sparrabeth.  [1k.  Willabeth, implied Sparrabeth.  Warnings: very poor communication.]
“Something Rich and Strange” - A Will/Tia Dalma one-shot, of all things.  A touch of destiny, indeed.  Written pre-AWE based on fan speculation.  [2k.  Canon-divergent.  Will/Tia Dalma, background Sparrabeth.  PG-13.]
“Ocean Heart” - Post-AWE, Elizabeth is visited by Calypso on that lonely beach.  [1k.  Implied Willabeth.  No warnings.]
“The Pirate’s Progress” - Post-DMC, Jack takes a jaunt through the afterlife, featuring all sorts of fun mythology/folklore.  [10k.  I’m gonna be real with y’all, I don’t remember if there’s anything shippy or triggery but I don’t think so?  Implied major character death I guess but he got better]
“Worlds Enough, And Time” - Futuristic AU in which Jack and Elizabeth both partook of the Fountain of Youth.  Our beloved pirates...IN SPAAAAACE.  Angst with a happier ending.  [3k.  Sparrabeth, implied Willabeth.  Canon-divergent in multiple ways.  Warnings: alcohol, discussions of death, suicidal ideation, referenced minor character death.]
“Janus and the Prodigal” - A conversation between Jack and Teague, a few years post-AWE.  [1k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  No warnings.]
“At Peace” by Rising Waters - Author’s summary: Elizabeth has been faithful for the allotted ten years, so Will is free of the Dutchman—but he is still plagued by thoughts of a man whose death he feels responsible for: James Norrington.  [1k.  Willabeth, unrequited Norribeth.  Warnings: referenced character death.]
“Second Chances” by geekmama - AU in which James was only wounded by Bootstrap, not killed, and Will drops him off at Shipwreck Cove to be with Jack and Elizabeth for the next ten years.  Fluff all around.  [1k.  Willabeth, can be read as Sparrington if you’re not a coward.  No warnings.]
“For Honour A Heart’s Demise” by Meddow - Another AU in which James is only wounded aboard the Flying Dutchman, only this time he gets to partake in the rest of AWE and becomes captain of the Dutchman instead of Will.  A goddess is defied and everything makes sense.  [10k.  Willabeth, unrequited Norribeth.  Warnings: brief suicidal ideation, survivor’s guilt, grievous bodily harm, major character death (but he gets better).]
“Between Wind and Water” by rexluscus - Author’s description: “England and Spain are at war, and Norrington needs a quick solution to the Jack Sparrow problem. Meanwhile, Jack discovers that the Caribbean he once knew is gone. The deal they make could solve both their troubles, or it might be the worst mistake of their lives.  This story is AU after the first film (sequels never happened). It's an experiment in dropping POTC characters into an actual historical event: the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741.”  [90.3k.  Sparrington.  See tags on AO3.]
“betwixt the devil and the deep sea” by notbecauseofvictories - A character study of Jack Sparrow in an AU with angels and demons.  [2k.  No ships.  See tags on AO3.]
“coda” by notbecauseofvictories - Elizabeth during her time as the Pirate King.  [1k.  Willabeth, Sparrabeth.  See tags on AO3.]
FICS I HAVE NOT YET FINISHED but would nevertheless like to recommend:
The “Rash Actions” series by @blanketed-in-stars - I’ve been meaning to finish this for 7000 years but I thoroughly enjoyed the early chapters!  Nicole is a wonderful writer and is doing the Lord’s work in writing quality Turrington content.  [147k.  James/Will.  See tags on AO3.]
“In Service to the King” by sleepylotus/@apirateslifeforme123 - An AU in which Elizabeth finds James in Tortuga after she becomes the Pirate King.  I loved the first few chapters!  [31.7k.  Norribeth, Sparrabeth.  Explicit.  WIP.  See tags on AO3.]
C1: Honeymoon Island 1#
With a flash of green, it is over. The honeymoon is over. Elizabeth digs her feet deeper into the wet sand as she stares out at the spot of the horizon, now empty, feeling the sea lap so enticingly around her ankles, and it anchors her.
What now?
Tumblr media
She is a wife and a widow, her husband lost to her, and yet she must remain faithful. For ten years, she must wait for him, and keep him in her heart. Can love last that long without so much as a look, a kiss? Perhaps she would have once believed it to be possible, during her younger, sillier days when life was mere romance, without substance or experience. But now?
Glancing across, she sees the chest, within which her husband’s heart beats its steady, impossible rhythm. She picks it up, holding it close, pressing her ear against it. Thump, thump, thump.
Reason tells her that this love can’t last, that there is no marriage to salvage - he is dead, lost to the sea, and she is left a widow. They married in haste, after months of bitterness and discord between them. They married in the heat of battle. Would she have said yes, had they waited until the cannon fire ceased? Had they not been so convinced that death was coming for them, nipping at their heels. But then of course, Will’s fate was sealed, and she is glad at least that he has someone with whom to keep his heart safe.
No, reason be damned, she had made a promise, and she must keep Will close, as close as he had been that day, when their love had burned, fierce and renewed, any past doubts cast aside. She had chosen him, and he her, and she must hold onto that, for the sake of his soul.
Swan Song *New Chapter*
Elizabeth paced back and forth in front of the threshold of her current lodgings, trying to decide whether or not to go out on deck and confront her captors…if she could even call them that. They’d dressed her in a fresh tunic and breeches (that fit her surprisingly well), dressed her wounds, wrapped her ankle, stowed her effects on top of a chest in the corner of the cabin, and left her a tray of bread and a mug of grog. By all accounts she was a welcome guest aboard a stranger’s ship, but in her experience such things were usually too good to be true.
She had nearly put her hand to the door when she abruptly turned, deciding to arm herself. She tucked her knife snuggly into the waistband of her pants behind her back and headed out of her room.
Slowly she craned her head around the door frame. Her cabin was located below deck, flanked by two other cabin doors; one decidedly more ornate than the others, likely belonging to the Captain. Slowly she made her way along the corridor that led to the main steps. All of the ship’s cargo was kept neat and organized, a stark contrast to the somewhat sloppy catchall the Pearl’s hold had become, and it concerned her somewhat. She looked upon the barrels and crates for any naval symbols or trading company brands and was relived, if only slightly, to find them blank.
She reached the bottom of the steps and peered up through the hatch opening in hopes to catch a glimpse of the bustling on the main deck. A familiar head of blonde hair strode past, barking orders as he went, and she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Nathaniel was with her and clearly in a position of some authority. And for but a moment she was put at ease until she realized what that meant: she was aboard the ship of that miserable harpy, Nancy.
Elizabeth was shaken from her thoughts when a pair of boots began making their descent down the stairs. She huddled quickly against a beam and squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself invisible.
The thumping of steps neared closer and closer to her rather poor hiding spot, when suddenly all sound ceased. She slowed her breathing in attempt to hear in what direction the pair of boots had gone. Satisfied she remained undiscovered, she opened her eyes and was greeted by a pair of blue eyes staring into her own with a cheeky smile attached.
Soooo ideas
Soooo I’ve been talking with friends and they have given a few ideas but I’m thinking of something to come after Deathly Cruising
let me see what you all think so I wanna rewrite the Curse of the Black pearl with Beetlebabes calling it the Kurse of the Kali and make CotBP Sparrabeth shippy, the way I always thought it should be.  So Bertha making her a man aka Bert will take James Norrington role, Bertha is all about books and knowledge so it works out  Beej as Jack Sparrow that's obvious Lydia as Elizabeth Swann again obvious Doomie aka Dominic for Will Turner's roll because he's a cab he's made of metal so he knows how to make metal swords, puns hahah Captain Kidder as Mister Gibbs So I’m stuck on Captain Barbossa, so far I have two options i mainly wanna go with. I have it as either giving it to Alex Brightman so making him Captain Brightman, or have it be A Sandworm as a human name Captain Sanders.   Poopsie aka Poppey and Prince Vince as Ragatti and Pintel Charles as Weatherby Swann Ginger as Anamaria Barbara as Estrella and Adam as one of the Mansion butlers  What do you all think? Reblogg or comment below your suggestions, would you even like to read something like this, etc
