LPT: If you have a name similar to your parents, DO NOT use a USPS Change of Address form when you move
LPT: If you have a name similar to your parents, DO NOT use a USPS Change of Address form when you move
This is for US-based folks; when you fill out a COA form, the United States Post Office automates mail routing using the last name and the first two or three (?) letters of the first name. They do not take middle initials into account. This is even worse when your names are all misspelled on various mailings.
If you use this form, you will start receiving your parents’ mail, and their bills, even if they themselves did not move. On top of this, the post office informs these entities that the customer has moved and they change the address in their own systems, which means that you will begin receiving mail addressed to your parents but with your address. It is a difficult situation to fix. Even your local post office may not quite know how to handle it.
Your best bet is to file change of address with each individual company or entity you do business with, concentrating on those whose mail is most important for you to receive, such as for credit card statements, banks, and student loans. Magazines and the like can be handled later.
Source: have dealt with this twice.
Did I miss or misstate anything? Please kindly let me know.
