Apple Faces Backlash Over ‘Shot on iPhone 15’ Marketing Strategy

As we all know how amazing the iPhone 15 Pro Max camera is, the company has made a huge issue out of the fact that the whole 'Scary Fast' event this week, which unveiled the new M3 Macs, was captured on camera. However, as evidenced by a recent Apple behind-the-scenes film, the audacious (and straightforward) "shot on iPhone" boast may be a tad simplistic.

Essentially, the movie was captured with an iPhone 15 Pro Max. with the assistance of additional pricey equipment. Do you want the footage you have to resemble Apple's? I hope your budget includes space for some SpaceCam equipment, drones, gimbals, and lights of the studio calibre. 

It should come as no surprise to exactly zero people that Apple chose to pair the iPhone with some professional-grade gear. The most valuable firm in the world can afford a studio light or two and is keen to make its advertisements appear as professional as possible. Additionally, Apple makes no secret of how much technology is used in a recent blog post. However, by opting to open with the straightforward and slightly trite "Shot on iPhone" line—which has been utilised in a number of photography-focused marketing campaigns—it makes it clear that the phone is the main attraction.

This was an unforgettably fun day!  I had done the site survey for the flight path of the helicopter scene during pre-viz, and I wanted to be on set so bad.  I begged for anything, a PA gig, anything, and I ended up on-set doing more reference photography and data wrangling.  ... and there were more cameras, and more crazy rigs, and more helicopters - I was in nerd heaven!

A lot of people think this sequence is all or mostly CG, but the truth is it was almost all done practically, with a real bus and a real helicopter.  

The orange bird is the Georgia Peach.  She’s normally a firefighter and at that time of year there was still some concern that she could have been called away at any time if needed for a wildfire.  You would get blown off your feet if you were near her when she took off -- and the sound... omg! 

The red helicopter above was one of the two spacecam choppers that were filming from the air.  We had 12 camera units on the ground and I was running around getting details on shots, lenses, etc. throughout the day. 

That’s VFX Supervisor Boyd Shermis and VFX Producer Rhonda Gunner in the second photo from the top.  The guy in the red coat is Michael Shermis, Boyd’s nephew, who is a VFX Supervisor himself today.  Boyd and Rhonda were amazing - and were such hard workers - I really admired them and their dedication.

Oh yeah - this is all right downtown LA.  Buildings were vacated, streets blocked off... the entire downtown area.  ... and we made a mess!  I saw uprooted trees and saplings, broken windows, damaged vehicles, stuff blown off roofs - movie magic!  I doubt Warner Brothers would do a shoot like this again :-)

shellyjohnsonasc: Hidalgo. Shot in Morocco, Montana, South Dakota, the California desert and MGM, this film is a journey through the empty quarter and a man's understanding of his heritage. I've written on The ASC Instagram page about our daily sand storms and the difficulties of shooting desert night photography at a film-anamorphic friendly stop of T4.0. A project full of technical challenges that benefitted from creative solutions. I came across this still the other day and was reminded of a conversation I had with Robert Richardson, ASC while prepping Hidalgo. Bob had shot The Four Feathers in Morocco and generously offered his sage advice. "Get the sun as low as possible so you get some sort of shadow line. Many of the locations favor a north face... but fight to face south when you can. If you face north, the terrain loses all character." I appear to be facing East here, As I recall because we shot this shot in the afternoon. I did follow some of Bob's other advice on this shot however; "The land is rougher than it looks. It appears you can glide over the sand without much camera stabilization, but it's actually quite rocky and bumpy. Regular stabilized heads won't work. It won't be enough... I tried it. You'll need something very big like a SpaceCam." Well, I did just that. The good people at SpaceCam set us up in Morocco to run with the gyro-sphere and extra-large iMax gyros on a chase vehicle. We trained the horses to be comfortable next to it and not run the other way... which was a challenge in itself! Steve Koster did the camera operating on these running shots. Steve typically shoots my aerials and he is fantastic and expert at following this type of fast action. Its funny because we referenced a lot of Gerome orientalist paintings for this film... and I also referenced some Remington images. This frame more emulates the Remington's with the horse's stride and Viggo's riding posture. Penguins coach defends Phil Kessel, Emotional Bench Guy

Game 2 of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ series against the Ottawa Senators was the Phil Kessel Show.

Not just because he scored the only goal of a 1-0 win for the Penguins over the Senators, evening their series at 1-1 ahead of Wednesday’s game in Ottawa. No, there was also the Phil Kessel Show at the Penguins’ bench, in which the forward ranted and raged and slammed his stick and smacked his gloves and looked about as content as a driver in their eighth hour in the Department of Motor Vehicles waiting room.

He looked like a hedgehog vibrating on a massage chair.

“You know, obviously, it’s a tight game, and ah, there’s a lot of emotion, It’s the third round. We want to win,” Kessel said.

Still, Kessel acting with the serenity of Paul Giamatti on a caffeine bender dropping a hammer on his foot was worthy of attention, and coach Mike Sullivan was asked about it on Tuesday.

“I think you guys take things out of context. You guys have no idea what conversations go on [at] the bench,” he said.

(Actually, we would if NBC’s between the benches commentator could reveal what’s actually being said instead of speaking in opaque terms, but we digress…)

“So guys … it’s an emotional game out there. Guys are heated. They’re heated for all the right reasons, because they’re invested, they want to win,” said Sullivan.

D”o we have some exchanges on the bench? Sure we do, and we encourage it because I think it helps our game. So just because a guy gets a little bit emotional in the bench, for me, I think it helps our overall team game. I think progress is made. So we call it a man’s argument. That’s the way it is. I think lines go back and forth and talk to one another. I think it brings juice to the bench.”

Phil brought the juice. Like, an orchard’s worth of it. Like when he appeared to be playing rock, paper, scissors with a ghost and Chris Kunitz burst into laughter.

“Phil’s an emotional guy. When he comes back to the bench, he wants a pass and he doesn’t get it, he lets a guy know. I have no problem with that. I don’t think our team has any problem with that. I think that’s how we make progress. That’s how we come together as a team,” said Sullivan. “I think it brings energy to our bench, and for me, that’s a good thing. So it tells me that we’ve got a bunch of guys that are invested and they want to win.”

Still, sometimes the emotions can get a little heated. Sometimes there’s too much juice. So, in those cases, Sullivan and assistant coach Rick Tocchet have to keep the peace.

“Sometimes a conversation can get a little heated, and trust me when I tell you this, our coaching staff is very well aware. We monitor everything that goes on [at] the bench,” said Sullivan. “Tocchet and I are pretty tuned in to the conversations that take place in front of us, and we believe they’re productive. If we think they’re not or they become a distraction, that’s usually when one of us steps in, and these guys are respectful. They get it. They understand it. And they’re a mature group.”

Hey, it’s like a big family on that bench. And every family has the crazy uncle who goes berserk at Thanksgiving because it’s creamed corn instead of traditional kernels, and he’s usually justified in his anger. Such is Phil Kessel. —

There was so much amazing stuff to see everywhere you looked that day.

There was a second unit set up that day, nearby, that was used for some of the scenes on the interior of the bus, so, if it’s part of the story, get reference photos for the CG guys. just. in. case.  “That hook thing, yeah, it’s a story point, so get a picture of it in case we need to rebuild it.”  “the welded reinforcements on the interior of the bus? yeah.”  Even things like taking the pictures of the types of lights and the position of the fan is important in case we need to recreate something and “fix it in post.”

The helicopter coming over the horizon?  Well that’s just too cool not to take a picture of.

Also of note, the camera techs on the SpaceCam rigs: They have to land to make ANY changes.  Lens change? Land.  New film mag?  Land.  Something’s vibrating?  Land.
