Get to Know the Caracal
The post Get to Know the Caracal by Kim Campbell Thornton appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. Those ears! The caracal’s ears rise almost as high as he can jump. Well, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but they are indeed one of the defining characteristics of this mid-size African wildcat. The caracal boasts tall, triangular ears are black on the back, tipped with long black tufts of hair.
What does a caracal look like?
A caracal. Photography ©GlobalP | Getty Images.
Caracals have other exaggerated physical features: long legs that enable them to jump nearly 7 feet in the air to grab birds on the wing and a long tail stretching up to a foot for balance. Stiff hairs beneath paw pads offer protection while traveling over sand. The short coat is tawny or reddish.
What are some other names for the caracal?
The caracal is the largest of the small wildcats. Three subspecies exist: Caracal caracal caracal in southern and eastern Africa; C. c. nubicus in northern and western Africa; and C. c. schmitzi in the Middle East and India.
Alternate names for them include desert lynx; karakulak, a Turkish word meaning “black ears”; and, in India, harnotro, meaning “killer of blackbuck.” Like so many wildcats, caracals have adapted to a variety of habitats. Their ranges include woodlands, savannahs, semi-deserts and mountains. What they prefer, though, is dry, scrubby, open terrain with cover for hunting and shelter.
Where can you hope to see a caracal?
The solitary cats are primarily nocturnal, making it difficult for wildcat aficionados to view them, but in protected areas they may be seen during the day. Anyone hoping to see caracals while on safari should ask about the availability of night drives or whether there are areas where they are seen in daytime.
Depending on their location, the conservation status of caracals ranges from “least concern” to “critically endangered.” Threats include habitat loss, reduction in prey, conflict with farmers, attacks by dogs and capture for the international pet trade.

Light Compression Socks, Calvin Klein Kid’s Socks and More Releases for Fall 2017
Get ready to have your socks knocked off. Several new launches and partnerships are under way in the legwear market for the fall ’17 season — and even spring ’18. Here, Footwear News rounds up some of the major announcements for labels such as Timberland, Calvin Klein, Soxland and Comfortiva. H.H. Brown-owned brand Comfortiva is debuting a line of compression socks for fall ’17 featuring light compression (12-14 mmHg). The collection consists of nine styles, retailing for $14, and four multi-pack offerings priced at $40. The socks are intended to increase circulation and reduce swelling and leg fatigue. Delivery is set for July, to independent retailers and the brand’s website. Delta Galil USA Inc., a subsidiary of Tel Aviv-based Delta Galil Industries Ltd., has inked a five-year licensing deal with Calvin Klein Inc. for boys’ and girls’ socks, underwear and sleepwear. As part of the agreement, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2018, Delta Galil will develop, produce and distribute the Calvin Klein products to department and specialty stores in the U.S. and Canada. New York-based Soxland International continues to grow its Dr. Motion compression sock line. For fall ’17, the brand will add a unisex sports category featuring medium compression (15-20 mmHg). Styles will include compression sleeves,

Cat Tarot Cards Feature Mystic Felines

While cats may not be worshipped today like they were in ancient Egypt, they are definitely favored pets and beloved family members. And many people believe that cats have preternatural senses.
So, cat illustrator Megan Lynn Kott has created a tarot deck featuring mystic felines to assist in divination. Megan pairs the unique feline spirit and personality of the classic cards: a cautious kitty peering from a paper bag is “The Hermit”; cats play on a carpeted “Tower”; kitties play with various “Wands”; drink from a selection of “Cups”; use their “Swords” (claws); or pursue pieces of kibble (also known as “Pentacles”).
Cat tarot cards.
A 108-page booklet, written by Julia Smillie, shows you how to lay out the cards and decipher their meaning. $19.95 from Chronicle Books; chroniclebooks.com.
About the author

A cat lover since she was a little girl, she has always had feline friends in her life. She and her husband share their Southern California home with their four cats, Agatha, Alastair, Jack and Mathilda, and an ever-changing clowder of foster kittens, all of whom enjoy being testers for cool, new products.

Davco by Soxland knocked our socks off with its latest line of footwear fun. Davco creates both women’s and men’s fashion-forward socks, with creative colors and designs that include cool cat novelty prints. My favorite hands down is the Don’t Stress Meowt sock available in gray with a black cat wearing sunglasses or dark blue with a pink cat.
Davco by Soxland socks with roller skating cats.
Follow them up with a cute kitty peek-a-booing over the blue stripes, also in dark blue or gray. Whichever is your favorite (roller skating cat, anyone?), you’ll be able to find the collection nationwide at stores like Kohl’s, DSW, Target, online at Amazon and more, starting at just $6.
