On Saturday 22nd of July, Fourways Farmer’s Market wore its finest blue red and white umbrellas to celebrate French National Day (aka Bastille Day). On Saturday 22nd of July, Fourways Farmer’s Market wore its finest blue red and white umbrellas to celebrate French National Day (aka Bastille Day). The celebrations are supposed to be held on July 14th, my guess is they didn’t want to compete with Stables Village Market who also had a Bastille Day special on that day.
Along with the colourful decor and misspelled French signs (e.g. “Boisson Froides”, I think I spotted a “De Les Mode” or something as well), an accordionist was walking around playing some French and some not-so-French tunes, while on the main stage, a harpist was explaining how a G can be obtained from the B# string if pulled slightly differently. Or was it a B# minus. Or if pulled with another string. Eh, something like that. She was passionate about her instrument that’s all that matters.
As usual, food was delightful although not all French but who cares? There was a guy selling Cassoulet, Escargots, Soupe à l’oignon and a bunch of other specialties, but the teryiaki sushi was far too appealing. I did pay my respects by finishing off with a Bar-One crêpe. So French right, I mean, Bar-One on a pannekoek-textured “crêpe”? Meh, it wasn’t bad and I had my chocolate fix.  
Oh! And on my constant quest to find the best croissant in Gauteng, I found a serious contender from Tonka Bean Bakery. The pastry was light and buttery, you could actually see the layers, di-vine. And their Kouigh-amanns, to die for! Seriously, my taste buds are ever grateful. Less French but also a must-try, their artisan doughnuts filled with crème patissière made with actual vanilla bean, beautiful. As far as I understood, they don’t have a bakeshop, they only cater on demand, or you need to catch them at markets. Do try them, you will not be disappointed.
