My top ten Hindi films on Netflix

If you’ve never seen a Hindi film, you’re missing out. Action, romance, comedy, and drama: you can often find them ALL in one of these three-hour films. (OK, not all Hindi films are three hours, but they tend to skew longer than American films, especially the older ones.) If the constant genre-changing doesn’t hold your attention, maybe the singing, dancing, bright costumes and incredible cinematography will. If you’re not sure where to start, check out my recommendations below. Most of these feature strong female characters or have a feminist bent. Here are a few Hindi words to listen for while you’ve got the subtitles on.

pyaar – love, dost – friend, dushman – enemy, zindagi – life

1.) Dangal (2016) – Feminist sports movie, based on a true story. Lead actor and producer Aamir Khan plays Mahavir Phogat, the father of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, two girls from a small town in Haryana who aspire to become professional wrestlers, though the state lacks both structural and social support for female athletes. Their father was a professional wrestler who dreamed of winning Olympic gold for India, and failing that, aspired to have a son that could fulfill his ambitions. But he didn’t have a son. He had one daughter, and then another, and then another, and then another. One day, after the girls get in trouble for beating up some boys in the neighborhood that were bullying them, Dad realizes he may not need a son to have Olympic gold winners in the family. Aamir got most of the praise when this film came out, but all the actresses who played his daughters (Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, and Suhani Bhatnagar) trained super hard for this film, and it shows 100% on screen. Best song: Dangal.

2.) Queen (2014) – Feminist coming-of-age travel film. This film is about a small-town girl that gets dumped on the eve of her wedding and decides to take her honeymoon to Europe alone, even though she’s never been out of India. Along the way, she makes friends with a diverse group of other travelers, sheds some of her more conservative views, and learns to embrace life fearlessly. Best song: Hungama. Second best song: London Thumakda.

3.) PK (2014) – This film was controversial when it came out because it pokes fun at religion, but it’s ultimately about we shouldn’t allow religious differences to divide us. Aamir Khan plays an alien that pays Earth a visit to try and understand human society. Unfortunately for him, there are a lot of rules he has to learn to pass as one of us (even though he looks human). Fortunately for us, that learning process includes a number of hilarious mishaps. Best song: Tharki Chokro.

4.) Dil Dhadkne Do (2015) – Family drama (but not without comedy, action, and romance) starring Priyanka Chopra (who you may recognize from Quantico or Baywatch). The parents in a family of business moguls decide to celebrate their anniversary by taking a ten-day cruise with some of their best frenemies. What could possibly go wrong? Best song: Girls Like to Swing. Second best song: Gallan Goodiyaan.

5.) 2 States (2014) – One of my favorite romantic Hindi films, this rom-com becomes a family drama when college sweethearts Krish and Ananya have to convince their parents to accept their partners. Krish is Punjabi (North Indian) and Ananya is Tamil (South Indian) and their cultures are very different. Will the parents be able to overcome their prejudices around class, color, and culture to accept their children’s partners? Best song: Iski Uski. Second best song: Locha E Ulfat.

6.) Little Things (2016) – This is a series, not a TV show, but I wanted to include it because I love it so much. It’s a super cute portrayal of a relationship between affluent twenty-somethings living in Mumbai. She’s very career-driven and he’s a little less clear on what his goals are, which contributes to some of the relationship conflicts in season one.

7.) Raees – This is a pretty straightforward gangster movie. A boy with strong values but few career options starts making money the best way he knows how: bootlegging liquor in a dry state. He eventually gets rich and powerful enough to scare even cops and politicians, but ultimately gets in over his head. Raju Ban Gaya podcast described this as a rip-off of Narcos, but I feel that’s a little unfair. They also praised the film’s portrayal of a Muslim protagonist. This movie features a fight scene in a butcher’s market, which, if you’re vegetarian like me, you may find a little hard to stomach. Also, some people get murdered. Best song: Laila Main Laila.

8.) Kahaani (2017) – The feminist thriller/murder mystery you didn’t know you needed. Vidya is living in London and very pregnant when her husband, who has traveled to Kolkata for work, goes missing. She travels to India to find him, but the local authorities, who assume he bounced because he couldn’t handle the prospect of fatherhood, are no help. Anyone that tries to help her mysteriously turns up dead. Can she find the killer before he finds her?

9.) Om Shanti Om (2007) – I included this because it’s a classic, and it’s got a lot of the wackiness I think Americans expect from Hindi films. It’s chockfull of references to other Hindi films, so the more you’ve seen, the more you can appreciate it. However, you don’t need to be a Bollywood buff to be able to enjoy this story about reincarnation and karmic comeuppance. It’s also a good introduction to Shah Rukh Khan, one of Hindi films’ leading men, and one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Best song: Deewangi Deewangi.

10.) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019) – This is the first mainstream Bollywood with a lesbian protagonist. (The independent Hindi film Fire portrayed a lesbian relationship in 1996 and it did not go so well.) Ek Ladki starts out as a rom-com and then becomes a family drama. The plot gets a little convoluted between the second and third act, but the chemistry between 90s heartthrobs Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla is a joy to watch. Fun fact: Anil, who plays the protagonists’ father in the film, is the father of lead actress Sonam Kapoor in real life.

These are all on Netflix right now. Not sure how many will be taken down next month.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS COMPLETELY MY OPINION ABOUT THE FOLLOWING FEATURES.  I feel the need to say this again because last time too i got a message but x,y,z film has x,y,z issues . I've said it before and i will say it again  It is all a mixed Bag, Mixed Genres, Mixed reasons to suggest them right from the quality to acting to cinematography to story to critical acclaim to some just for PURE ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES.  I makes these lists because I feel these features deserve love and appreciation and because some made me feel Proud and some just for pure entertainment factor . Sidenote.. all titles are actual links where you can watch the features with subs and most of these are On prime video or netflix as well

K.G.F: Chapter 1 |Kannada| *Yash | alt Link  A young man's promise to his dying mother leads him on a dangerous quest for power and wealth.  If I may say so this One pretty much did the same thing in terms of opening doors to kannada film industry like Baahubali did to tollywood. This one  followed the formula and dubbed it in multiple languages and gave it a wide release worldwide which raised eyeballs and got me curious too esp caz this one has a similar plot with the rise of a hero and the hunger for power just set in a completely different world and era. Now the Strength here is the screenplay  and the non-linear pattern which keeps you engaged, with the growth of Rocky being shown steadily. The film is set between 1951 to 2018 and maintains a sense of curiosity as each character is unveiled. Yash is Phenomenal in it as rocky. I said it back then when i watched it and i will say it again He exuded the same kind of charisma say like a 70′s 80′s hero e.g Mr Bachchan from his blockbuster hits where he Played similar roles or salman khan in his typical masala characters basically Larger than life even if he has this arc of being a nobody to Rocky Bhai to Rocky the messiah. One word of Caution... This one gets a lil confusing in Kannada  and with subs as there are too many characters and each one has his/her own agenda. i was confused at many parts but then i watched the hindi dubbed version and it made a world of difference. this one is fairly well dubbed too just like baahubali and what i mean is the voices didn’t sound robotic. Also i personally felt they went a little too far with the dukhi  junta in prison in 2nd half and the violence as in it got very tedious but thank God that got over soon with the rise of this hero but it is worth watching and rest of it is really good, esp the last 15 mins WOWWWWW I cannot wait for part 2. Also my only sandalwood entry.

Fidaa | tel |*Varun Tej, Sai Pallavi  (on Prime as well) Two young people embark on a winding and rocky path to love after meeting at a wedding. First of all supercute romantic, comedy/ family drama but what is refreshing about it is that it is Mainly from the Heroine’s POV and we have a VERY STRONG heroine who has her opinions, her say ,her own thought process and who is just so real. On the surface it looks like just another tollywood rom com but it’s Not. the music is really Good too and Sai Pallavi is A bundle of joy as Bhanu who calls the shots  mostly here. Needless to say it is one of my Feel good films when  i want to see something that makes me smile and gives me that comfort vibe i  go to this one mostly.

Tumbbad|hin|*soham shah . A man and his son encounter a legendary demon while searching for hidden treasure in 19th-century India. 

This one will come as a surprise to many as it is a hindi title but This one a rare gem that is Underrated af and i haven’t seen a finer hindi film in the last year because of how rich it’s content is and how thought provoking it is. The makers have invested years in getting to final result and it shows. this one gave me goosebumps, sacred me, left me mesmerized and make me go WHAT too. This is also on this list because you may not have heard about it at all just like myself who had no idea and jumped into it out of supreme boredom and was left in complete awwwwww and then did my reading and research. This one is a well thought out psychological horror film with strong visuals and metaphors and makes you question as it plays with your mind. Tumbbad is a perfect example of a film that creates a surreal illusion.

Imaikkaa Nodigal| Tam| Nayanthara,Atharvaa, Anurag kashyap: alt link  A suave CBI officer (Nayanthara), is in search of a serial killer who kidnaps and kills the children of important people. The killer, however, is targeting his nemesis next. a revenge thriller with a strong Plot unpredictable and amazing twists.Each character has an important role and Nayan As a Bad ass cop who freaking sets the bar too high for female officers in desi films. THis one is one of the finest Thrillers in recent years which actually gives you thrills and Shocks and most of them one can’t guess. Let me be honest i gave upon this seeing anurag kasyap as the antagonist as i was unable to bear rudra and just his Ottness on top of that atharvaa’s lovestory as the parallel track mad me go ehhh as i initially clicked on it for nayan and there was so little of her in the beginning but then i gave it another try and couldn’t stop & was WOWEDDD by the Film and Nayan as anjali and yeah she is the MAIN CHARACTER so we get a lot of her later. She is at her FINEST as anjali. this is the film one wants to watch to get a high of sorts. WATCH IT FOR NAYAAAN FOR A STRONG FEMALE ACTOR/CHARACTER Taking the center stage and BEING FANTASTIC. This one is so just so entertaining in so many ways and the film one can watch on any given day despite knowing the plot twist. Beware Nayan and Vijay’s little arc is heartbreaking and i cried a lot tooooooooo... i was shattered at that part..... it is so hauntingly shot too. TW: Graphic violence  In that scene 

Mahanati|Tel|* Dulquer Salmaan, keerthy suresh, samantha, vijay D |alt link  Biopic based on  The life story of South Indian actress Savitri, who took the film industry by storm in the late '50s and '60s Mahanati is a film about the rise of the first female south Indian superstar – Savitri. Her story one of the most heart wrenching romantic tragedies of our times.This film tells a story of the Mahanati; her life, her journey to fame, and the dramatic downfall. Keerthy Suresh, elegantly brought Savitri to life, and Gemini Ganesan, played by Dulquer Salman, makes this film a true pleasure to watch. I had no idea who Savitri was i went into it because DQ and Again was BLOWN AWAY by How well made this film is and how it is made with so much sensitivity and rawness. it keeps the real journey part intact as in doesn’t sugarcoats or overly glamorizes things to show Savitri as some mahaan hasti. They make this film the Grand celebration of her life with all her struggles and tragedies  and makes you connect with her in a very real  manner and All this Makes this film so much more than a film. this one becomes that Larger than life Grand,SHE IS A HERO More because she truly is rather than OH because she had this sob story IYKWIM  like hindi Biopics do. They have made savitri Grand By her resilience by her courage by her will power and invested in the character and plot rather than all taam jhaam. This one is By far the best Biopic i’ve seen from desi industries and Not One and i mean it NOT one Hindi biopic even comes close to this one in terms of presentation. Keerthy suresh is a joy to watch as savitri. i am not gonna lie i broke down at few points and that is because of her acting and laughed too i connected so strongly to an actress’s story (who i had no idea about as in savitri i had 0 knowledge about savitri or in general about south industries retro eras ) only because of keerthy’s presentation.Also dulquer is a Joy as gemini ganeshan. he really slipped into it with ease and lived upto the part. they have achieved finesse in  showcasing a life story and recreating old songs from black & white era. If nothing else on this list watch this and imaikaa nodigal and you won’t regret it 

Rangasthalam |tel| *Ramcharan, Samantha :  Chitti Babu, a hearing impaired boat skipper, becomes caught in the middle of a political feud in the village of Rangasthalam. Watch this one for Ram charan’s performance  He is a delight to watch as chitti babua and this easily is his Best WORK till date this character have so much to play with and He ACES IT . The strong and intriguing story line is also a Plus . The film is not just set in the 80s; it also picks a story template from that era and narrates the tale in a refreshingly raw manner but the characters are so well fleshed out they don’t look caricatures by any means. the songs are grand and super fun to watch too. 

Maari 2 |tam|* dhanush, sai pallavi :  Maari, a gangster with a heart of gold, tangles with a new nemesis who is determined to bring about his downfall. First things first this one is mileas ahead of the previous version in everything. A much stronger film in every way. Otherwise it is a pure masala entertainer with all the masala elements and  dhanush and sai make a BOMB pair and their lil story is ahh sooo full of feelz. 

Sudani from Nigeria |Mal|* soubin shahir:  When a soccer club manager brings one of his injured foreign players home to recuperate, they form an unlikely bond despite their cultural differences.. A refreshing sports drama that touches your heart. explores the cultural differences so beautifully. the characters stay with you much longer after the film is over. The film effortlessly explores iissues in the neighborhood and much bigger political issues too. overall SImply an underrated film and one should watch it for it’s warmth and sincerity.

Koode|Mal|*prithviraj,nazriya nazim, paravthy  A family tragedy causes a young man to reflect on his childhood and reassess his future.Anjali Menon and that brilliant cast should eb your reason to watch. i don’t think i need to say another word to convince you but still anyway. it takes you on and emotional roller coaster ride. it is a flawless film with an extraordinary cast. also Naz is as charming as ever in her comeback film. there are very few films who actually jump into exploring the bond between a brother and sister and this one aces it with reflecting upon various issues and things they had to go throughasa family  as well as their individual struggles. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. Also Paro and prithvi yeah. .. simply OUTSTANDING film

Varathan |mal|* fahadh faasil,Aishwariya lekshmi:  After losing his job, Abin and his wife, Priya, move from Dubai to Priya's family estate in Kerala, but peace eludes the couple. It takes it’s time in the first half but in second it comes all guns blazing and turns into a worth watching survival thriller. it does makes one uneasy at times with the contsant stalker guys lurking around but it is all worth the wait at the end. trust me..

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam |tam| *vijay sethupathi,arinswami,jyothika,simbu;  An attempt is made on the life of a reigning don, and it sets in motion a succession battle between his three sons. In other words Godfather with Mani ratnam  twists A delicious film to devour it si an out and out maniratnam film with massy fan moments and smart filmmaking techniques. watch it for performances esp. i wish jyo had more to do but she is good at what she does in her supporting role. . this one is a true blue  multi starrer ,family drama.

Merku Thodarchi Malai |tam| Antony, Gayatri Krishnan, Abu Valayamkulam :  it  revolves around the life and times of a group of people living along the foothills of the Western Ghats. basically we travel along with Rangu ( teh pratagonist) who is a daily wage worker and his struggles in bringing that load upto the city  and his one dream to own a piece of land someday. this oen is almost like a documentary. this makes you thank and count your blessings. feel every bit of pain and effort and struggle that these daily wage workers have to go through in their daily lives. i broke down at so many points and i just wanted to do something to help makes lives a bit easier. IDK it hit me so hard at places and made me thankful for all the things i have. 

Mayanaadhi |Mal|*tovino thomas,aishwariya lekshmi : A mule driver in a gang and an aspiring actress try to navigate their way through an unexpected romance. Mayaanadhi is a beautiful tale of love. The emotions it conveys needs to be experienced and the movie gives us a taste of life. Aashiq Abu really knocked it out of the park once again with this one. this one. It is a simple enough tale with a plot that is real to life and familiar.It is perhaps the most Soulful Romantic film i’ve seen in last year or so. 

Takeoff|Mal|*parvathy,fahadh :  A young Muslim woman (Parvathy) struggles to find love and happiness in midst of the ongoing civil war in Iraq. It  an ode to the Indian spirit. This is a riveting survival saga, made by a team gifted with acute political and social awareness. It is, in one word, stunning. Paro Simply have slayed. A bit like airlift as in the basic setting and premise is similar but poles apart. it is one hell of a film( in a good way) PARO,PARO,PARO. this is all i have to say to explain the brilliance of it.

Satire and Subversion in Ishmael Reed’s “Conjugating Hindi”

Back in the 1800s, South Asian men arrived in the United States as peddlers or seamen. According to historian Vivek Bald in Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America, they were single, and instead of creating enclaves of their own, they assimilated and married into Black and Puerto Rican communities in areas like Harlem and New Orleans. The fluidity between Black American and South Asian American communities didn’t disappear, but continued into the Jim Crow era, when some Black Americans put on turbans and pretended to be Indian to avoid harassment. Some used exotica to sell the illusion, and at that time of pre-yoga, when people knew even less about South Asians than they know now, the ruse worked. People could not tell the difference between Black people and the people identified as “Hindoos.”

Due to the United States’s immigration laws and policies, over the last several decades, professional Indians have become much more visible to the mainstream than working-class South Asian immigrants had previously been. Their collective economic success in the United States has been used to produce the harmful model minority myth, a myth that aggressively omits the numerous structural factors that have conferred advantages on members of this group: caste, class privilege, Brahmin and other upper-caste networks in America, India’s affirmative action laws, socialism built into India’s constitution, and learning English due to India’s prior status as a British colony. Although many Indian Americans subscribe to the model minority myth, Indian Americans as a bloc have been reliable Democratic voters for decades, and there are notable Democratic politicians with South Asian ancestry such as Kamala Harris and Pramila Jayapal. But more recently, several Indian Americans have risen to prominence under an anti-Black, anti-immigrant, far-right agenda (much to the mortification and embarrassment of their progressive counterparts who have set up a Desi Wall of Shame): Dinesh D’Souza, Nikki Haley, Ajit Pai, Raj Shah, Seema Verma, Dimple Shah, and Shalli Kumar.

The history of affinities and tensions between Black and Indian communities in America, as well as how White conservatives and liberals have exploited Indian immigrants over the last few decades to justify and produce further discrimination against Black communities, sets the foundation for Ishmael Reed’s ingenious, razor-sharp, seriocomic novel Conjugating Hindi, published by Dalkey Archive Press. Like other Reed novels, Conjugating Hindi is not only a novel, but is also a graphic novel, heavily illustrated with provocative hand-drawn cartoons. In the novel, you can see the aforementioned history upended and satirized for the Trump era.

“California is still the world’s biggest hideout,” the novel begins. Peter Bowman, or “Boa,” is a Black professional who is fleeing something from his past. He moves to North Oakland, where he teaches at a community college and explores the gentrified city. After taking an early retirement, Boa becomes a public intellectual and is invited to debate with a right-wing Hindu “intellectual” egomaniac Shashi Paramara on the subject of “Was Slavery All That Bad?” The Columbia Speakers Bureau tells him: “There’s an opportunity for you to make some more money. You’ll be able to break out of the Black History Month ghetto.” Boa mentally notes that the event, like Oakland, was being “gentrified” by non-Black people. Facing a tax audit, Boa needs the money offered for the debates, and reluctantly participates. Shashi argues that slavery wasn’t that bad, and is received with open arms and adulation by self-serving White right-wingers. Boa argues the opposite, standing in as a kind of straw man, and is ignored by Shashi, as well as the rest of the audience.

Shashi has a radical sister, Kala, a professor of Post-Colonialist Studies, with ink-black skin and who doesn’t fit in with her Brahmin family. She believes English is an imperialist language and demands that only Hindi be spoken in India. Boa is immediately intrigued, but his young Black chauffeur warns him off: “Indians can be as racist toward Black people as Whites. Some have called them the most racist people in the world. Not only do they hate Blacks but they have problems with the darker members of their own families. You got mobs beating African students…”

Boa worries, “A new bunch of racists coming into the country adding to the ones who are already here?” The chauffeur tells him that to Shashi and his Brahmin entourage, “[Y]ou’re a Dalit. An Untouchable.” Boa assumes this is ridiculous, citing Gandhi, but this gets him thinking, and he goes down the rabbit hole of learning Hindi (hence, the title) and exploring literature about South Asia.

Political tensions escalate. Eventually during one debate, the moderator announces that India just shot down an American passenger plane. The conservatives who had been nodding along with Shashi call him an Indian N-word and try to beat him up. He’s rescued by security. Meanwhile, Boa is rescued by Kala, who pulls up on a Harley and drives him home before heading off to her host’s home in the Berkeley Hills (her host is a Black woman whose best-selling memoir is entitled My Triple Oppression). Before she leaves, Boa asks how the mob missed her, and she responds that White Americans are always mixing her up with a Black person, that being Black doesn’t work in India, but in the United States it comes in handy for her. Boa is baffled.

The plane incident triggers all-too-believable xenophobic and racist mayhem. Indians wearing traditional clothing are dragged off BART. Indians bus from Silicon Valley to the San Jose airport and face racist insults. Mobs start hunting Indians. A Fugitive Indian Law is debated in Congress. Shashi comes to Boa, asking to hide out in his place, dressed like a “hip-hopper” in order to avoid being harassed. Boa agrees to let him stay, a shrewd callback to how South Asian peddlers sought and received refuge with Black and Puerto Rican communities in the 19th century.

The novel goes heavy into informal debate at this juncture, with Boa eventually confronting Shashi on his anti-Blackness (which Boa comes to recognize also as a kind of self-loathing and determined refusal to face facts regarding the British Empire). In his satirical rendition of the informal debates between Shashi and Boa, Reed nails the Dinesh D’Souzian failure to comprehend basic historical facts about both America and India. He sketches Shashi as both a naïve innocent and opportunist. The novel turns at points into a graphic sex comedy, with sex itself as another kind of border crossing — for really, how else could Boa communicate deeply with someone as obtuse as Shashi? Blended into factual material are fictions — the president at the time of the novel is “Kleiner Fuhrer,” for instance. Conjugating Hindi is a further exploration of Reed’s alternative Black aesthetic of Neo-HooDoo, informed by bricolage and jazz improvisation. It is not quite as poetic or gnostic as Reed’s 1972 masterpiece Mumbo Jumbo, but it is brilliant — the same sort of experimental brilliance observable in the fiction of Thomas Pynchon or the cut-up technique of William S. Burroughs — and more accessible. It hews to the satiric register of Reed’s Japanese By Spring and Juice.

The novel is what some academics have dubbed a trickster text, a text informed by the mischievous, shape-shifting, slippery figure of the trickster, found in folklore throughout the world. Implicit in Reed’s formal style, as well as his content, is the trickster disregard for caste of any kind. Heedless of boundaries and resistant to being pinned down or hemmed in, the novel is driven almost entirely by Reed’s deep, free-wheeling curiosity about why things are the way they are in regard to the use of the model minority myth against Black communities.

This remains a set identity that a Hindu possesses from birth, describing his degree of “purity” or “pollution,” and consequently his entitlement to respect, as well as a script for social relations, including arranged marriages. There are moments where Reed brings his exploration of caste and race together in a way that felt a touch too pat, binding together a little too neatly anti-Blackness with the Brahmin identity of Indian immigrants assimilating into the far right. The most famous Dalit intellectual of all time, B. R. Ambedkar wrote in The Untouchables,

It must be recognized that the selfish interest of a person or of the class to which he belongs always acts as an internal limitation which regulates the direction of his intellect. […] A Voltaire among the Brahmins would be a positive danger to the maintenance of a civilisation which is contrived to maintain Brahmanic supremacy. […] If any non-Brahmin were to make such an attempt the Brahmin scholars would engage in a conspiracy of silence, take no notice of him, condemn him outright on some flimsy grounds or dub his work useless.

This is an observation that holds true in the Indian-American diaspora, too. So far, nobody in the United States is publishing any Voltaire-like satires of caste and race by a Dalit American or a non-Brahmin Indian American, but this bold and memorable novel by a brilliant Black author is the next best thing.

Conjugating Hindi is a firebrand’s novel, the crackling, overflowing, pugnacious novel of someone who doesn’t care about genre boundaries any more than he cares about historical boundaries, but who does care deeply about innovating. In an interview with Callaloo that was conducted in 1988 at Reed’s home, Reed commented:

Well, Afro-American artists have always had to struggle against the middle-class. […] I mean when you write the truth, sometimes the black middle class complains or the white right wing will complain or the left wing will complain. […] I think most Afro-American artists catch it from all sides. I think most ethnic artists catch it from all sides.

If you didn’t spot a drone camera flying above their heads or hear award-winning director Ali Abbas Zafar shouting out commands, you would be forgiven for thinking it’s a scene straight out of a day in the life of a worker in an oil company.

All of this was being staged with military precision, under the watchful eyes of Zafar. Gulf News tabloid! was witness to all the action on the sets of Bharat, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, on Saturday.

In between shots, director Zafar, who is camping in Abu Dhabi filming for the next 20 days, spoke to us about returning to the UAE. The director, who filmed blockbuster Tiger Zinda Hai in the capital last year, also spoke about Bharat, an adaption of South Korean film An Ode To My Father and working with Bollywood superstar Khan again. Here are the excerpts from our exclusive interview about his 2019 Eid release…

Tell us what’s happening here today on the sets of Bharat?

We are in Abu Dhabi shooting an important chapter in Bharat. We wanted to replicate a style of filming that is rugged and raw. The film spans over 60-65 years of Bharat’s life and the other characters in his life. From the teasers, you know that it is a journey of a man and a nation together. There’s a chapter in the film where lots of Indians work in oil fields and what we are filming here today replicates that portion in the film. This scene is set around the time when the Middle East found oil — say around the 60s or early 70s. We are showing the hardships of the people who were working here at that point and that chapter is being filmed here. We are trying to shoot it as real as possible.

You are getting down and dirty literally… Does it get easier with time or is every film a nightmare until it releases?

Every movie is a different nightmare as each film is a beast of its own. With Tiger Zinda Hai, it was very tough because we filmed in August in Abu Dhabi and it was very hot. The weather is far better now. This is a different kind of struggle. This film has more drama than Tiger Zinda Hai and is grittier and more real.

The sets here remind me of the 1957 classic The Bridge On The River Kwai where you see humanity struggling to survive. Have you drawn from such movies?

David Lean is one of my favourite filmmakers and I am hugely inspired by his works. What’s fascinating about him is that he used to create films on a scale and a landscape when there was no CGI. Somewhere or the other, the landscape that I am trying to create in Sultan, Tiger and now Bharat is more real, rugged and raw in terms of the landscape that the nature provides you. The idea is to utilise this landscape and make you realise that this is where we all started. This was our beginning. The idea is that when people see it on screen [they] should understand the toughness.

What has been the toughest part so far in terms of filming?

It’s always an organised chaos on a film set. But there are so many departments working together and unifying forces to give you that one perfect shot, that it’s bound to be controlled chaos. Now I have worked and filmed in every part of the world — the Americas, Europe and the Middle East, Africa and I feel that the energy in a film set is always the same. But the first two days are always tough where people are getting to know each other. But then they get used to it.

You have worked with Salman Khan in Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai. We are told that he’s on his best behaviour when he works with you and that you are known to extract the best from your actors.

You have to understand that a film has a lot to do with actor-director chemistry. Somewhere or the other we have found this unspoken chemistry where we discovered that we work well together. The kind of experience he has brings a lot of maturity into my work. I am happy to work with him and we have found this unsaid chemistry where I can push him and he can counter-argue with me so he keeps me on my toes.

Bharat is a Hindi adaptation of South Korean film ‘An Ode To My Father’. How did that happen?

The film came to me through Salman Khan and he asked me to watch that film. Until then, I never thought I could remake a film because I have always written my own movie. So my biggest worry was whether I could do justice to such a beloved, critically and commercially acclaimed film. I liked its basic idea as it is simple and emotional. With Bharat, we have rewritten it extensively because An Ode To My Father is steeped in Korean culture and history. It’s their reality and so Bharat was completely rewritten to adapt to Indian reality. That was our major work. The soul of the film is beautiful because it talks about the triumph of human spirit and hope. It has lots of drama and I have recustomised it as a Salman Khan film.

What does the customisation to a Salman Khan film entail?

And there’s not much action in An Ode To My Father, but I brought a bit of action in Bharat. There’s a certain expectation from a certain star. Within that periphery of what people expect from a Salman Khan film, you need to create a story and that’s what I believe in. When I work with Salman Khan, I know instinctively that he is one of the biggest Indian superstars that people want to see every year on the big screen. We need to make those people feel that this film is food for their emotions. When they come to watch a Salman Khan film, you have to give them what they expect out of his films. So there has to be action, comedy, drama and songs. The continuous struggle is to pull that off and put these elements in a jar and serve it to an audience. I keep struggling and striving to present a new Salman Khan with every film of mine. When you see Tiger or Sultan, you have to create a character that’s bigger than his persona. In Bharat, we are talking about a nation and its identity through Salman Khan’s character. His emotions and life characterises our country and its patriotism. It can’t be jingoistic either. But with Bharat, you will realise that you don’t have to a superhero to be patriotic.

Streaming titans seek passage to India for new growth SINGAPORE: Netflix and Amazon are battling a dizzying array of homegrown outfits, from Bollywood producers to broadcasters, for dominance of India's streaming market, a key target as growth in Western countries slows. As more Indians shift to viewing movies and shows online, industry revenues from streaming in the country are set to jump from $500 million in 2018 to as much as $5 billion in 2023, according to Boston Consulting Group. With many Western markets saturated and Asia's top economy China effectively closed off to foreign streamers, a nation of 1.3 billion where phone ownership is forecast to rocket makes for a tantalising prize. "India is super important, for both Netflix and Amazon," Tony Gunnarsson, a streaming analyst from consultancy Ovum, told AFP at the recent Asia TV Forum in Singapore. "Netflix... need to continue to generate new subscribers, and there is no better place than India." But the US giants face tough competition in the vast, ethnically and religiously diverse country where the streaming scene is rapidly evolving. There are dozens of subscription streaming services in India, according to Ovum, and some domestic outfits have more experience in producing content tailored for local audiences and in the country's myriad languages. A major player is Hotstar -- originally a homegrown outfit which later became part of the Disney empire -- which has attracted an army of followers in part by streaming Indian Premier League cricket matches live. Other Indian rivals include ZEE5, run by major broadcaster Zee Entertainment, and ALTBalaji, the video-streaming service of Bollywood producers Balaji Telefilms. As well as offering their services direct to consumers, streamers are bundling their content with mobile phone services in a bid to broaden their reach. - 'Golden age' -Netflix, the world's biggest subscription streaming service, has made expanding in India a priority and aims to attract 100 million subscribers in the country -- an ambitious goal given analysts estimate it will only reach about seven million this year. The company made a mark with its first Indian original "Sacred Games", a hugely popular series about a troubled police officer starring top Bollywood actors, and has a slate of new productions in the works. They plan to invest 30 billion rupees ($420 million) in Indian content in 2019 and 2020. "This is India's golden age of entertainment," Srishti Arya, Netflix India's director of international original film, told AFP. "There are so many opportunities in streaming, creators are not restricted by length, duration." Fellow US titan Amazon also has a strong foothold in India with its Prime Video service and, like Netflix, typically appeals to wealthier urbanites who want to see Western as well as Indian content. It is planning to release around one Indian original production a month over the coming year, and is ramping up its production of shows in regional Indian languages. Netflix has been lagging behind Amazon in terms of subscriber numbers but looks set to move ahead from 2021, according to Ovum. Nevertheless both will likely struggle to catch up to Hotstar, which reached 300 million active monthly users last year, although the Indian streamer works on a different model, offering some content for free and other shows only to subscribers. To compete in a crowded market, the US titans are offering their services for less than in the West -- Netflix introduced a package for India priced at only 199 rupees ($2.80) a month, which allows consumers to watch only on a phone or tablet, and Amazon Prime is 999 rupees ($14) for a year. And the scene is about to get even more competitive with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service in India next month via Hotstar. - Entertainment shake-up -The streaming boom has also shaken up India's massive entertainment industry, generating new business opportunities. Reliance Entertainment -- which produced "Sacred Games" for Netflix -- has 40 to 45 series in development for streaming platforms, including Hotstar, Amazon, and Hong Kong-based Viu, said Group CEO Shibasish Sarkar. Two years ago their business was about 90 percent making films but work for streamers "is the fastest-growing space right now", he told AFP. The industry hopes that some of the new high-quality shows can find audiences overseas beyond the Indian diaspora -- two thirds of the viewers for "Sacred Games" season one, which is in Hindi, were outside India. Hopes for overseas success for foreign language productions have been boosted by South Korean black comedy "Parasite", which won a haul of Oscars this month and became the first non-English language film to scoop the gong for best picture. Some observers are optimistic that streamers in India have much space for growth, but in the long term they believe only the fittest will survive. "Markets are already at a point where there are more than enough services," said Ovum's Gunnarsson.
