Promesas
SouRin Fest 2017 Week 1: SFW -- Promise They were only two weeks away from graduation. Two weeks away from being separated again. Two weeks in which everything would change for them whether it’d be for better or for worse (as cliché as that sounds). During the remainder of these two weeks, Sousuke and Rin continued to act as always. They didn’t change their ways around each other, they didn’t think about the fact that in two weeks Rin would leave for Australia and Sousuke would leave for Tokyo. Even the ever loud and enthusiastic Momo didn’t mention that his senpais would soon leave them. Practice continued at the swimming club; Rin was teaching Aii the ways on how to handle the other members if anything were to happen, Sousuke offered to help the rest of the members on their swimming and Momo, well he was being Momo but he’d also help some of the members here and there. The Samezuka boys met up with the Iwatobi boys a few times during these two weeks, they’d often go out to the movies or to the mall. With the ever energized Nagisa, there was no doubt that the boys didn’t have fun one way or another. It was also known to everyone that Makoto and Haru had a major switch to their relationship (no longer being just best friends). Everyone saw it coming... Read More Here

SouRin Fest - Week 9 - My Sunshine
I can’t explain my shame for how late this is. Even though the summer festival is WAY over (I mean, it’s mid-October now.....),the thought of leaving this drabble collection incomplete bothered me so much. I’m just trying to catch up on everything. I swear it won’t be long before I have a normal writing schedule!
All my SouRin Fest stuff listed chronologically on tumblr HERE. All of them also found on AO3 HERE.
For @sourinsummerfest Words: 492
The large, paved walkway they had started on slowly reduced down to a smaller dirt path. The earth under Sousuke’s feet was soft enough for his heels to dig in with each step as he followed the winding path around ancient trees and temple structures. The sun radiated a comforting heat along his exposed skin and shimmered against the strands of Rin’s fiery hair. They fell into a natural companionable silence, their shoulders and elbows brushing occasionally. The pair took in the quiet stillness of the autumn scenery without interruption, having not walked by another person on their casual stroll for quite some time. But when the path started to ascend, scaling a steep hill into a more heavily wooded area, Sousuke’s attention shifted towards their unknown destination.
“Wait…” Sousuke’s feet halted suddenly, his eyes narrowed as he cursed his poor sense of direction. He glanced around at the vaguely familiar scenery, trying to place the memory of this location. Feeling his shoulders tense up and the hands he shoved into his jacket pockets clench into tight fists, he turned towards Rin, who had stopped at his side. “…Where are we going, Rin?”
“Sousuke,” Rin replied with a meaningful tilt of his head, as if disappointed. The movement swept the sun’s rays across the silky, red hair in waves, temporarily distracting Sousuke from his own question.
Rin clicked his tongue and placed a hand to his hip, bringing Sousuke back to the moment, the feisty posture in opposition to the softness in his voice. “You promised.”
That non-answer was a quick jolt to his memory, bringing back the promise he had almost forgotten he made months before. A promise made to a homesick Rin far from home, sentiments shared across a slow Skype signal, both trying to bridge the space between them with tender words and talks about their future.
Suddenly Sousuke remembered this path, these very trees, the stillness in the air, and the way Rin looked in the sunlight on this hill. He knew where they were.
Sousuke’s mouth opened in a soft ‘oh.’
Before Sousuke could respond properly he felt Rin grab onto his forearm, the closest available skin he could reach. Rin’s smile was soft, his grip firm, his eyes full of gentle understanding. But there was also a silent hopeful request, should Sousuke hesitate or reconsider.
“Please,” Rin whispered, tugging at Sousuke’s heart with the vulnerability only he got to see.
One corner of Sousuke’s mouth lifted in a smile, the arm Rin was holding onto moving to release his hand from his pocket. Before Rin could fully step away from him and misconstrue Sousuke’s shifting as withdrawal, Sousuke’s large hand took hold of Rin’s own. Their fingers intertwined as a shimmer appeared in Rin’s beautiful eyes, lit up like jewels in the sunlight.
“All right,” Sousuke answered quietly, his voice a low gruff sound filled with emotion and affection. “Let’s go ask for your father’s blessing.”

As Every Color Illuminates (6/6)
Sourin Summer Fest Week 8 (despite being super late lol) (AO3 mirror) Prompt: My Sunshine Rating: T Word Count:  1,364 Warnings:  HEAVY ANGST FOR THIS FINAL CHAPTER. Summary:   A summer in the lives of two soulmates.
They reach the end.
Ch1.  Ch2.  Ch3.  Ch4.  Ch5.
Chapter 6: with no colors in our skin
IMPORTANT AUTHOR NOTE: Very very heavy angst in this chapter. I tried foreshadowing for this and I'm not sure how successful I was at that... I briefly toyed around with changing the ending before going back to this one, which was the original ending. So, please head the heavy angst warning and the fact that this fic is tagged with "Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" because it would have been a massive spoiler. I also didn't really use the prompt explicitly but... oh well.   Thank you for everyone who took the time to leave comments! This is my first finished chapter fic and I appreciate all the support.
Chapter under the cut.
~~
The world felt muted, as though someone had left a painting out in the sun for years and it had faded to the point of being unrecognizable.  The vibrancy of the world that Sousuke had come to know and love was gone, replaced with colors that bled together, mixing into a muddled mess that eventually turned to gray.  He hadn’t seen this much gray in the world since he was a child and it was something he had never wanted to see again.
No matter how much he hoped that things would take a turn for the better, the colors continued to leave him one by one, until a week had passed and only one color remained.
Sousuke sighed against the subway train door, watching as blurs of gray, interrupted by rare streaks of color, zipped past.  His fingers curled around a small velvet box in his coat pocket, picking at the seam and lifting the lid over and over again.  The fidgeting did not ease him; instead, it served to remind him of what would never come to pass.
When he heard the name for his station, Sousuke straightened up, pulling his hand out of his pocket.  He took a deep breath, trying to collect himself.  Despair weighed heavily in his chest, oppressive and threatening to choke him. He shook his head, trying to ignore the feeling that today would be the last time he made this trip.
The journey from the station to the hospital was a familiar one and despite Sousuke’s tendency to get lost, his feet carried him there with ease.  He hesitated in front of the building, as he always had done during this past week, staring at the red cross on the doors.  Red was the only color he could still see, vibrant and bright in a world full of gray.  It was funny, really, that this would be the last color left in his world when all he could associate it with now was blood smeared across the wet asphalt.
A shaky breath escaped his lips as he pulled the doors open and walked inside.  Giving a small nod to the receptionist, Sousuke walked down the hallways, making his way to the ICU.  After just a week, his feet had already remembered the route and some days he wished that they would just get him lost, make him wander the hospital rather than confront what was waiting for him.
Instead, they once again betrayed him, bringing him to a room he had come to despise.  A nurse spotted him and made her way over, a fake smile on her face.  Sousuke had talked to her every day but he couldn’t remember her name.  He couldn’t remember any of the doctors’ names either. Maybe his mind was trying to distance itself from getting to know these people, because that would make the situation all the more real.
“Yamazaki-san, can you tell me what colors you can see on this chart?”
Glancing at her, he saw the same chart with a color wheel in her hands that she had held up every day.  He sighed, before saying, “Red.”
“And the others?” she asks, voice strained, as though she knows exactly what he is going to say but just needed the confirmation.
Sousuke licks his lips, hesitating as he stares at the color wheel, knowing what each of the colors is supposed to look like but all he sees is gray.  The same damnable gray that has been slowly creeping into his world and stealing the very life from it.
“Gray,” he rasps out, throat feeling tight.  He coughs, trying to clear it before speaking again, “All of them are gray.”
The look she gave him confirmed that this was the answer she had been expecting.  “I…  He’s worsened further.  Unless there’s a miracle, he won’t last much longer.  I’m so sorry.”  She pats his arm gently before going to the door of the hospital room and holding it open for him.
Hesitating, Sousuke stared at the door, trying to catch his breath as his chest tightened. He knew it wasn’t just grief causing him to feel this way.  The connection between them was telling him that the end was close, that things would be over soon and he wanted to delay that for as long as possible.
Gritting his teeth, he walked past the nurse and into the room, the familiar sounds of machines filling his ears.  His eyes flitted over them, trying to understand the readings, before landing on the unconscious figure on the bed.
Red strands of hair peeked out from underneath the gauze that wrapped around Rin’s head.  Sousuke’s hand moved to touch them, frowning at how greasy and unwashed the once beautiful hair felt between his fingers. His eyes avoided the other side of Rin’s head, where the hair had been shorn away for surgery.  A surgery that had done nothing to bring Rin back to him.
Grabbing a chair and placing to by the bed, Sousuke sat down, eyes flicking between Rin’s face and the machines.  His eyes lingered on the bandages for a moment before he tore them away as memories of Rin lying motionless, bleeding and broken on a rain covered street had bile rising in his throat.  Swallowing thickly, he reached out and took Rin’s left hand in both of his, running his thumbs over the pale skin gently.
“They caught the man who hit you,” Sousuke said, feeling his throat scratch as he tried to fight down his emotions.  “He lost control because of the rain and he’s going to prison for driving off.  I wish I could say I’m happy about that but that won’t bring you back to me.”
The lack of response made Sousuke bite his lip and his hands tightened around Rin’s smaller one. “The doctors and nurses say you’re getting worse.  I don’t want to believe it but… red is all I can see now.  Because you’re still holding on, despite everything.  Rin, I… I hate seeing you like this,” Sousuke whispered, lifting Rin’s hand to hold it against his cheek.  “I don’t… Fuck, Rin, I miss you and I’ll always miss you but please… Don’t hold on and suffer just for me.”
It hurt to say those words.  A large, selfish part of Sousuke wanted to beg Rin to stay but the smaller, rational part of him knew that neither of them would be happy with Rin lying in a hospital bed, brain dead and hooked up to machines for the rest of his life.
A tear slipped down Sousuke’s cheek and before he could stop himself, he found himself crying and kissing Rin’s hand, murmuring “I love you” over and over between his sobs. He didn’t know how long he sat there crying but eventually the tears ran dry and he attempted to collect himself.
Taking the velvet box out of his coat, Sousuke opened it, watching as the gold band sparkled in the light.  He took the ring out of the box and gently slipped it onto Rin’s ring finger.  It was a perfect fit, just like he knew it would be. “I was going to give this to you in Australia,” he said, voice still shaking from his crying spell.
Leaning forward, he brushed a kiss against Rin’s cheek, ignoring the bruises on Rin’s skin. “I love you so much, Rin and I wish I could have given this to you under better circumstances.”  He sighed and kissed Rin’s forehead, avoiding the gauze. “I hope you found whatever answers you were looking for during Obon.  I don’t know what I think, yet, but I know this; we’re soulmates and we will find each other again.  So, I wanted to give you the ring now, because even if you can’t hear me, that’s my promise to you.”
Sousuke smiled sadly before leaning down and placing a chaste kiss to Rin’s lips.  He held the kiss for a moment before pulling back and whispering, “Goodbye, Rin,” as the machines connected to Rin all flat lined.
The last color Sousuke saw was the red of Rin’s hair before it, too, faded back into gray.

lights (and the stars exploding, we’ll be fireproof)
SourinSummerFest - Week 6
Also on A03: (x)
Prompt: Matsuri/Obon
WordCount: 643
Rating: G
Warnings: Some angst, but there’s basically nothing.
Summary: Rin and Sousuke at the Obon festival back in Iwatobi. Rin remembers his father and Sousuke is there for him. A lot of fluff and a little bit of angst.
(A/N: Title from Troye Sivan’s Youth. Reblog! I hope you enjoy it!)
Sousuke watched from beside Makoto as Rin and Haru both walked up to the waterfront, placing lanterns onto it, to join the hundreds already there. The night was dark, and the lanterns reflected upon the water, matching the stars in the sky.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Makoto whispers from beside him.
“Yeah.” Sousuke nods back, as he watches Rin and Haru both stand up and watch their lanterns float towards the sea.
“You know, Haru acts all strong, but during Obon, when he honors his grandmother, he often needs some comfort.” Makoto says. Sousuke looks toward him and finds Makoto’s looking back, “I’m sure Rin needs the same.”
“Of course.” Sousuke tells him, eyes glancing towards Rin, who’s still gazing off towards the night. Makoto smiles at him.
“Good.” Makoto says, turning back towards the ocean. Rin and Haru are making their way back, and Sousuke can see that Nanase’s looking more emotional than usual, his shoulders tense and lips tightly pressed together. Rin’s eyes are red rimmed, and his hands are clenched at his side. Haru makes a beeline towards Makoto, and Makoto hugs him, walking the two of them further up the hill. He sends Sousuke a calm smile from over Haru’s shoulder as he goes. Rin comes to a stop right in front of him, sniffing slightly.
“C’mere.” Sousuke says, holding his arms out and Rin falls into them, arms by his side as his head falls onto Sousuke’s chest. He cries, slowly getting Sousuke’s yukata wet, but Sousuke doesn’t mind. He can always wash it.
“I just miss him.”
“I know.” Sousuke says, arms bringing Rin closer as he kissed Rin’s forehead. “I know.”
**
“Good thing Makoto and Haru found us a good spot, right?” Sousuke remarks, looking towards Rin. Rin nods, still looking sober, and manages to give Sousuke a small smile. Sousuke sighs and drops down beside Makoto, who smiles at him before going back to Haru, who’s cuddled up in Makoto’s arms. Rin plops down next to him, and Sousuke reaches out to intertwine their fingers. “How are you feeling?”
“Better.”
“Rin, if you do need to talk….”
“I know.” Rin glances towards him, eyes still shining with tears, “But, later, okay? Right now, can we just enjoy the fireworks?”
“Alright. But Rin, are you sure you should be bottling this all up?”
“I’ll be fine.” Rin says and scoots closer. Sousuke subconsciously places an arm around his shoulders. “Now look, the fireworks are starting.”
The two leaned on each other, watching the fireworks explode in colorful sparks across the sky. There is silence, punctuated by the popping noises the fireworks give off. Rin snuggles closer.
“I really miss him you know? I wish, I wish he was still here.” Rin begins talking, his voice slightly muffled. “I just- I hope he’s proud of me.”
“He is.”
“Are you sure? I mean, he gave up so much just to have me and Gou…. I hope that he’s proud of who I am, of who I have become.” Rin says, sniffing slightly. Sousuke places a finger under his chin, lifting it so that their eyes meet.
“Trust me. He’s looking at you now, and he is so incredibly proud of you. He loves you, and he can’t wait to see who you’ll be.” Sousuke tells him firmly. Rin smiles at him and leans up to kiss him.
“Thanks, Sou.”
“Of course.” The two turn back to the fireworks, watching as the lights explode across the sky. Sousuke looks towards Rin, who’s eyes are glued to the sky in childlike fascination. Sousuke confesses that he spends most of the time just staring at Rin’s face, lit up with light. Rin’s head turns and they look at each other for a bit, before Rin winks. Sousuke turns away and blushes, Rin’s chuckle rumbling against his chest.
“I love you.”

SouRin Fest - Week 7 - Cold Treats
All my SouRin Fest stuff listed chronologically HERE.
For @sourinsummerfest Words: 561
“I’m so sorry, Rin.”
That was the first thing out of Sousuke’s mouth when Rin returned from his short walk across the parking lot from the convenience story. Sousuke was a broken record. Rin was pretty sure that was the fifth apology he received since the tire blew on the highway and they had to pull over on the next exit.
Sure, this wasn’t how their first vacation together was supposed to go. And yes, Rin knew Sousuke had this planned for a while and was probably feeling disappointed.  And of course, Rin agreed this trip was rather special since they had not spent much time together since he moved back to Australia. But this set back was obviously bothering Sousuke way more than it was bothering him. After all, were they not still spending time together? And didn’t they still have the entire week set aside just for each other?
“Will you knock it off with the apologies, Sousuke,” Rin groaned, a lopsided smile softening the blow of his harsh words. “It’s not like you could help getting a flat tire.”
He watched his best friend shrug, his eyes immediately falling to the ground, his head drooping.
Sousuke seemed determined to blame himself, determined to cast the whole trip off as ruined, and that was pissing Rin off. How could Rin ever hope to have the perfect atmosphere, the best opportunity, or find the right words to confess his feelings to his stubborn, brick wall of a best friend if this depressing mood continued?
“Che.”
Rolling his eyes, Rin gently nudged Sousuke’s back with his knee, trying to gain his attention once again. When the man refused to budge Rin placed a frozen popsicle, wrapped in an icy plastic wrapper, against the back of Sousuke’s neck.
“Hey!” Sousuke jumped slightly, angling his body away from the sudden chill against his sensitive skin. His glare was weak and short-lived as he caught the frozen treat in his hands. “What…?”
“Don’t worry, I have your drink too. I just figured you could use something to cool you down,” Rin explained as lowered himself down on the curb to sit next to him.
Rin unwrapped his own treat, taking a satisfying bite right off the top before glancing over at Sousuke. The other man hesitated a moment, the corners of his mouth still pulled down into what appeared to be more of a pout than a scowl at this point. He watched Sousuke’s calloused hands slowly pulled the corners of the wrapper, peeling it off the popsicle with more care than Rin himself did. Rin considered how much effort Sousuke had gone through to plan and arrange the entire week-long vacation for them. From the rental car to booking the hotel room to printing out all of the activities they could participate in, should Rin show interest in any of them.
To apologizing for an uncontrollable delay on the very first day of their trip together.
Sousuke was always so careful, so attentive, so thoughtful when it came to everything he did for him. And Rin noticed.
The hell, Rin thought, what does it matter if this isn’t the most romantic setting?
“Hey, Sousuke…” Rin started, watching as Sousuke took an unhurried bite of his treat as Rin slid his own back into the wrapper. “I have something I want to tell you…”
