resurrecting my darling eldritch child (Hierophant Yeast, my sourdough starter)--let's see what horrors it provides this time

my darling child [Hierophant Yeast, my sourdough starter] somehow got contaminated (probably by serratia marcescens, from some cursory googling, although I’m not sure how that happened) so I had to toss my current starter and restart it from my remaining reserves of dried starter and BOY I hope that fixes the problem because I do NOT want to start another starter from scratch
#I'd appreciate it if people didn't reblog this; thanks#sourdough bloggin'#I scrubbed down my whole fridge too just in case#I think I may have fed it a couple of days late once when I was traveling and that may have been the cause of the problem#the only other thing I can think of is that I might have used water that was too hot while feeding it at one point. so. going to be careful.#Queenie actually says something on this blog#this is very silly but I am actually pretty distressed about this wwww#given that the only occupants of my apartment are 1. me 2. Hierophant and 3. my cacti (one of which suddenly died recently)#local 30-something isolated enough that the loss of their sourdough starter is a tragedy; more news at 10 I guess

look, I know this is meaningless to anyone who doesn’t have a sourdough starter, but we’re at a 3 1/2 hour rise and I’m worried that it might have overproved

F got us a Dutch oven for Christmas and not to be an adult but oh my frickin’ god, the sourdough is SO good
#Queenie actually says something on this blog#sourdough bloggin'#I still gotta do some experimentation to figure out the Perfect Sourdough using the Dutch oven#but loaf number 1 turned out QUITE well#the funniest part of adulthood is us getting something nice for the kitchen and all of us losing it#that's just what being an adult is like. you dream of a nice nonstick skillet that isn't 20+ years old

It’s been a long time since I updated everyone on Hierophant Yeast, but it’s Marchiversary* so please look at the bread that my beautiful sourdough starter child made
(the one in the front was baked on a baking sheet and the one in the back was baked in a Dutch oven)
#*Marchiversary is the anniversary of the day that everyone living in casa de queenie found out that we were WFH for the foreseeable future#so we count it as the start of the pandemic for us :))) (even though it 'started' way earlier than that)#sourdough bloggin'#food /#Queenie actually says something on this blog#obviously the Dutch oven loaf is superior but like. my roommates have determined that my Stand power is making sourdough starters unspeakably powerful; please suggest names for this curse
#'how is that possible' I don't know. my sourdough now doubles in size in an hour#I can't let it rise for more than 5 hours total#(turning and folding every hour for 4 hours and then 1 hour of shaped loaves)#or else it winds up overproved#I fed K's starter while he was out of town and it has turned into a similar beast#I've been trying to nerf my starter every week for MONTHS and it's only gotten stronger#I HAVE BEEN ON BREAD FORUMS. every single grocery store within walking distance has no flour EXCEPT the Japanese grocery store because they forgot to label any of the products in English on the front of the containers or on the shelf labels and that’s how I used my advanced proficiency in Japanese to acquire 2 kg of flour

oh my GOD our local bakery is selling off their dry yeast because they’re closed for the pandemic so we’re gonna actually get some yeast????
#on Tuesday..........................................so we'll see if Hierophant gets going before then#but even if it does we can make the sourdough recipes that call for dry yeast????? HECK YEAH#also.............I miss the bakery.....................#miss my weird Bakery AU where the cashiers try to talk to me and I suddenly become incapable of human conversation#miss their frickin' phenomenal bread#the walk out there is really nice too........#Queenie actually says something on this blog#sourdough bloggin'#for those hoping for updates on Hierophant Yeast: it's doin' pretty good!!!!!#looking very bubbly today :3#not rising much yet but......#probs gonna make some more biscuits this weekend because we keep tearing through them#(and it uses discard!!! so I feel less wasteful......)
