Compartmentation
There is a level of sophistication to how Montagu operates. The email address associated with the Twitter accounts he or she set up appears to have been used only for establishing those feeds, an associated website, and to contact reporters and the White House. Other than that, there are no digital breadcrumbs.
Concealment
A Twitter account by the name Kacey ‘Lego’ Montagu has been engaging with a few individuals who have noticed Montagu’s involvement in White House press operations. But there is no identifiable information one can discern from it either. The background image is of the late Prince Philip and the avatar used is of Trisha Paytas, a YouTube star.
Cover
Montagu’s play-acting as a White House reporter goes back at least to December, when he or she set up @WHschedule on Twitter. They repeatedly referenced the “schedule” account in emails as a primary duty. In March, they began sending tweets from @WHpoolreport. The accounts are rudimentary repostings of two sources of information reporters regularly consume: the president, first lady, vice president, and second gentleman’s daily schedules and the so-called pool reports, which are real time dispatches from a small group of journalists tasked with following around those principals during the course of the day and reporting back to the rest of the press corps on their movements and utterances.
Craic
Some White House reporters approached by Montagu via email said the inquiries typically came after they’d sent their first pool report that day. That report likely tipped off Montagu as to who would be in the briefing room. Some of the reporters on pool duty said they did some quick due diligence before deciding on whether to ask the proposed question and came across a since deactivated LinkedIn profile for Montagu that lists the job as “Chief Political Correspondent" at WHS and a location of Washington, D.C. The profile picture associated with the account was U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson eating an ice cream cone.

I’m not sure where you’ve read this, but as far as I know, this term is being used by all the meme “iconic” accounts on Twitter. I’ve used it a couple times, been called a show off for being a college student using big words, but it’s not a permanent word in my vocabulary. It’s a permanent word in my internet vocabulary.
Origin
According to Urban Dictionary, the reliable source of the hipster world, it was a term coined in calling Mariah Carey for being her educated, talented, and beautiful self no matter what’s her weight. For example, if Mariah Carey would be seen walking down the street, stumbling upon Donald Trump on the street, calling him a whore, we’d all be calling her a skinny legend. She’d be on the cover of times with the headline, “Skinny Legend Does it Again.”
Most sorces say its from Mariah Carey’s fan base. What had happened was that a fan responded to Tomi Lauren tweeting, “Mariah is skinny. Fuck blue lives!” And then fans were like, “Ha ha! You is right tho. Mariah is skinny. She’s a legend! A skinny legend! oMg! New meme!”
Definition
An Adjective, never a verb. If someone uses this word as a verb, watch out cause it could be a scam. For example, if you’re at the doctor’s office for boob implants and the doctor says, “I’m gonna skinny legend you.” Run! Run! Run! Becoming a skinny legend comes naturally, never forced.
There are many definitions for this term but to break it down, being called a skinny legend has the same equivalence as being called a legend but a skinny one. In my opinion, it’s a huge compliment being called a skinny legend. You’re called a skinny legend and next thing you know you’re signing autographs on stranger’s asses. The irony.
I’ve seen on twitter this term also being used as a way to make fun of them for being fat. The latest victim of this is Raini Rodriguez. But she’s only being called a skinny legend on twitter because she’s gotten hate in the past by teenagers for being big so calling her a skinny legend is being ignorant. Just call her a legend. Then a skinny legend!
Influence Now, everyone is being called a skinny legend. Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Trisha Paytas, Beyonce, and Britney Spears. Basically any skinny legend.
So now that you’re educated, ready to use this big word out in the world, be careful how you use it. You wouldn’t want to give any body too much power.
Follow my blog! I publish new posts every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday & occasionally any day in between.
What “Skinny Legend” Really Means I'm not sure where you've read this, but as far as I know, this term is being used by all the meme "iconic" accounts on Twitter.

For Creators, Everything is for Sale A rash of new start-ups are making it easier for digital creators to monetize every aspect of their life — down to what they eat, who they hang out with and who they respond to on TikTok. Tens of millions of people around the globe consider themselves creators, and the creator economy represents the “fastest-growing type of small business,” according to a 2020 report by the venture capital firm SignalFire. But as the market gets more and more competitive — and the platforms and their algorithms remain unreliable — creators are devising new, hyper-specific revenue streams. One comes in the form of NewNew, a start-up in Los Angeles, that describes its product as creating a “human stock market.” On the app, fans pay to vote in polls to control some of a creator’s day-to-day decisions. For example, a creator can use NewNew to post a poll asking which sweater they should wear today, or who they should hang out with and where they should go. Fans purchase voting power on NewNew’s platform to participate in the polls, and with enough voting power, they get to watch their favorite influencer live out their wishes, like a real life choose-your-own-adventure game. “Creators are burning out, but their fans want more and more,” said Jen Lee, 25, the founder of a popular creator economy community on Discord. “By monetizing each aspect of their life, they can extract value from everyday interactions.” Courtne Smith, the founder and chief executive of NewNew, said the company was “similar to the stock market” in that “you can buy shares, which are essentially votes, to be able to control a certain level of a person’s life.” “We’re building an economy of attention where you purchase moments in other people’s lives, and we take it a step further by allowing and enabling people to control those moments,” she said. The platform began beta testing with a select group over the last week, and several TikTok and YouTube stars have already begun earning money. “Have you ever wanted to control my life?” Lev Cameron, 15, a TikToker with 3.3 million followers, asked in a recent video posted to NewNew. “Now is your time. You can actually control things I do throughout the day and vote on it and then I will show you if I end up doing the stuff you voted for.” He proceeded to ask his fans what game he should play with friends: dodgeball or catch. In the background of the video his friends shouted “catch!” Alas, 78 percent of fans voted dodgeball. (Mr. Cameron said he didn’t really want to play dodgeball because it could damage a fence in the yard, but the fans had spoken.) “When they vote, I do the thing they vote for,” he said. “It’s not like, oh, I secretly do the other thing. It’s surprising how many people vote and what they vote for.” (Mr. Cameron has also allowed fans to dictate what he watches, what video games he plays and the name of his pet hamster.) Ms. Smith said the platform reserves the right to ban users who post polls that are offensive, inappropriate, dangerous or break the law. While the beta test is still invite-only for creators, Ms. Smith hopes that eventually everyone — from celebrities to average people — will be able to leverage it to monetize their lives. “Sure, it’s fun to control a famous influencer or celebrity, but it’s honestly just as entertaining to control someone you go to school with, or your boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, or an author planning their next sci-fi novel, or a beauty founder creating their next makeup palette,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how boring you think you are, there’s someone out there who would find your life interesting to the point that they’re willing to pay.” Comments, Collaborations and Crypto Well-known creators who aren’t yet monetizing the minutia of their lives are still making money on everyday digital interactions. (Why comment, like, or share someone’s photos or videos if you aren’t getting paid?) Recently, a platform called PearPop has become popular for allowing fans to pay for interactions with their idols on social media. For $250, for instance, the TikTok star Griffin Johnson will comment on your video. If you don’t have $250 to spare, you can offer your best bid. “Monetizing your social presence has traditionally only been accessible to those with a large following that can secure big brand deals,” said Cole Mason, the co-founder and chief executive of PearPop. “This is no longer the case. The idea for PearPop democratizes creator monetization by providing something that makes a lot of sense for creators with 10,000 followers and 10 million followers alike.” Collaborations between stars (and up-and-coming creators) are also increasingly more easily monetized. Another new tool, called Stir, is seeking to help creators split money for videos they make together. “We think the future of creator monetization is collaboration,” said Joseph Albanese, the C.E.O. and a founder of Stir. “We let creators take any place they make money, whether it’s a YouTube video or Shopify store, and split the revenue with other creators.” The crypto world has also proved enticing for creators looking to monetize interactions. Rally.io, a crypto platform, allows creators to start their own digital currency in order to build independent economies with their fans. Fans can purchase the creator’s currency and use it to unlock exclusive or unreleased content. The Clubhouse star Bomani X has begun offering his own $BOO Coin currency and the Twitch creator FanHOTS has introduced $FAN Coin; fans who hold the coin can use it to choose which character he will play in online games. And then there is the world of nonfungible tokens (NFTs), which are pieces of digital art and media that live online. Though anyone can see an NFT on the internet — buyers do not get to “own” anything in a physical sense — they have become a fast-growing market. The pieces of digital media function as rare collectibles. The YouTube star Logan Paul recently sold $5 million worth of NFTs. “There’s a potential to earn a huge amount of money,” said Joshua Wanders, 30, a YouTube creator with more than 8.7 million subscribers. “It’s pretty much 100 percent profit driven by mania.” Last week, Mr. Wanders and four other creators released photos of their feet as NFTs. (What makes these images NFTs is blockchain technology, which can be used as an immovable record to designate authenticity in ownership.) The creators uploaded their feet photos onto an auction site and livestreamed the bidding. The livestream was also monetized. Zack Honarvar, 27, the founder of the talent management firm One Day Entertainment, said that he and Airrack, a creator he manages, have been playing around with using NFTs to give fans “shares” of a YouTube video. “Before the video goes up, we could break it into, say, 10 clips, then mint those 10 clips as NFTs,” Mr. Honarvar said. “When someone buys that NFT, that person would be entitled to a one tenth split in ad revenue from the video. By buying in advance you’d become a shareholder of that video.” The goal would be to use NFTs to create a wholly decentralized fan-owned and fan-operated YouTube channel. “A YouTube channel in which the fans can dictate everything,” Mr. Honarvar said. The only hurdle is the Securities and Exchange Commission, which does not allow NFT sellers to guarantee revenue as part of ownership. Still, to Mr. Wanders and other creators, these schemes feel safer than building businesses solely on social platforms, which can prove fickle. Their algorithms and community standards can change, as can their monetization structures — not to mention, they could go out of business. “With the internet and YouTube, there’s always the concern of being demonetized and having your channel canceled,” he said, “so people are always looking for alternative ways to earn money. You never know where the platforms are going to take you at the end of the day.” Pay to Play, but for Creator Drama As creators concoct new ways to monetize their followings, Elijah Daniel, 26, a creator in Los Angeles, is helping followers put a price on the creators. On Friday, he launched the Clout Market, which is a little bit like trading cards, but of influencers. The Clout Market offers 10 million NFTs representing top creators including Trisha Paytas, James Charles, Bryce Hall, David Dobrik and Jeffree Star. The NFTs are designed to look like Pokemon cards with pixelated images of each creator. The cards carry parody names for legal purposes, Mr. Daniel said, so Tana Mongeau’s card reads “Tana Mongoose.” The price for these items is determined by the creator’s relevance online. Mr. Daniel worked with a developer to create a dynamic pricing structure that adjust prices in real time. (It pulls from social and analytics platforms data.) If a creator loses or gains followers or trends on Twitter, the price of the NFT Mr. Daniel created for them will go up or down. Mr. Daniel said the goal of selling these NFTs is to let fans monetize the drama surrounding their favorite influencers. “A lot of fans will buy these for support,” he said, “haters will buy them to bet on people’s downfall.” “Influencers and social media stars are making so much money off drama and scandals,” he said, “and most of them are fake. This is a way for the fans who follow along so heavily with everything to be able to invest in those scandals and make money too.” He added: “If we have to go through another scandal, we all better be getting paid for it.” “This is the first-wave of creators adopting new technologies to connect with an already engaged fan-base,” said Jeremiah Owyang, a creator adviser to Rally.io. “But instead of it being one-way and solely transactional,” he said, “the fans are as much part of the creation experience as the creator.” Source link Orbem News #Creators #sale

tumblr has always been about like, obsessively keeping receipts/sauce to the point where there’s dedicated receipt blogs for callouts
the other day i had a conversation on twitter with multiple people where they kept coming up with more comically stupid things they claimed trisha paytas has done each time i asked for a source

All the ways beauty YouTubers James Charles and Tati Westbrook have been affected by their explosive public feud, Defence Online

On Friday, beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook announced the end of her longtime friendship with makeup artist James Charles in a YouTube video titled “Bye Sister.”
Since the video was posted, Charles has lost nearly three million YouTube subscribers, while Westbrook has gained more followers than that amount.
Multiple celebrities have also unfollowed Charles on Instagram, and his merchandise website appears to have been taken down.
Westbrook, who typically posts new YouTube videos at least three times a week, has not uploaded anything to the platform since Friday. However, she has been publicly supported by stars like Shane Dawson.
Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more stories.
Beauty vloggers James Charles and Tati Westbrook have had a whirlwind week.
On Friday, Westbrook released a 43-minute-long video in which she ended her friendship with Charles, claiming that he used her to achieve fame and success. She also accused the 19-year-old of trying to manipulate others using his “fame, power, and money.”
Since her video was released, Charles has lost nearly three million YouTube subscribers, while Westbrook has gained just as many. Charles has also lost a number of celebrity Instagram followers, and Westbrook has yet to upload a new YouTube video, which she typically does at least three times a week.
Below, take a look at all the ways Westbrook and Charles appear to have been affected since their public feud.
Since Tati Westbrook publicly ended her friendship with James Charles on Friday, the 19-year-old makeup mogul has lost nearly three million YouTube subscribers.

Prior to the release of Westbrook’s video, Charles had amassed more than 16 million YouTube subscribers. At the time of this post, however, the beauty vlogger is down to 13.4 million.
According to Social Blade, a website that tracks YouTube subscriber counts, the number of Charles’ YouTube followers appears to be going down every minute.
Westbrook, however, appears to have gained the number of subscribers that Charles has lost.

Before posting her “Bye Sister” video on Friday, Westbrook had a following of more than 5.9 million on YouTube. At the time of writing, her Social Blade page shows her having 10 million subscribers and counting.
A live counter has been created to track their respective subscriber counts.

Since Friday, a channel on YouTube called Tea4Real has been hosting a subscriber-count livestream. The live video shows the changing number of subscribers held by Westbrook and Charles respectively.
The video also lists the number of subscribers the two had prior to their feud.
Charles has lost tons of celebrity Instagram followers.

So far, at least eight celebrities have unfollowed the makeup artist on Instagram: Kim Kardashian West, Kylie Jenner, Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, Ariana Grande, and Zhavia Ward.
Charles was also unfollowed by seven major YouTube stars, including Jeffree Star, Ethan and Grayson Dolan, Emma Chamberlain, Ricky Dillon, Antonio Garza, and, of course, Tati Westbrook.
Former fans of Charles’ are retaliating against the makeup mogul by destroying his namesake eye-shadow palette.

On TikTok, for example, some former fans have posted videos of themselves burning the James Charles eye-shadow palette from Morphe. Twitter users took different approaches, like one person who threw their palette across pavement.
But while many people on social media said they no longer support Charles, others felt the palette is “too expensive” to completely destroy. Instead, some people chose to get creative with their makeup and cover the James Charles logo with new designs, such as a photo of Snoop Dogg, a painting of Shrek, and a label with Westbrook’s name.
YouTube stars like Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, and Trisha Paytas seemingly endorsed Westbrook’s vitamin brand, Halo Beauty.

Following Westbrook’s video on Friday, YouTuber Trisha Paytas took to Twitter to announce that she purchased vitamins from the beauty vlogger’s brand, Halo Beauty.
“24 hours ago I had no idea what a Tati was and now I’m buying every product she has,” Paytas wrote on Twitter. “Mainly cause I need my hair to grow.”
Read more: The explosive YouTube war between James Charles and Tati Westbrook is all because of vitamin supplements. Health experts say they can be a scam.
When a fan replied and said the vitamins work, Dawson answered his tweet: “It really does!! I use it daily!! Not spon! haha.”
While the two are not formally sponsored by Westbrook or her brand, the timely stamp of approval from Dawson and Paytas showed many fans that YouTube fan-favorites had taken sides.
That said, on Monday, Dawson spoke about the feud in an Instagram story, and seemed to offer a more heartfelt take on the public drama without necessarily picking a side.
“Even though I believe some people need to be humbled I also could never enjoy watching someone go through something like this,” he said, adding that he wants to “focus on good stuff” and that he feels like he has “tea poisoning from all this drama.”
Westbrook’s vitamin brand is said to have seen an “unexpected influx of orders” after the release of her video.

According to one Twitter user, Halo Beauty sent an email to people who recently placed orders, informing them that the brand is “a few days behind” its shipping process.
“Due to an unexpected influx of orders, we are a few days behind processing your shipment,” Halo Beauty appears to have written in an email sent to customers. “Please know that our Halo elves are hard at work, and everything should be running smoothly by the end of this week!”
However, Westbrook hasn’t uploaded a new YouTube video since Friday.

The beauty vlogger typically uploads content three times a week, but has been nearly silent since her Friday video.
On Twitter, she said that she wouldn’t post a video on Monday because her “heart is still too heavy.”
“I feel like I need to remind you that we can hold truth & inspire change without grabbing onto hate,” Westbrook said in a tweet. “Honor your blessings, don’t abuse them. Celebrating pain will only bring it to your door. Love you guys, see you soon.”
Charles faced additional backlash in Australia, where he delayed a meet-and-greet, seemingly as a result of his feud.

In the midst of the feud on Friday, Charles made an appearance at the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre in Queensland, Australia, for a meet-and-greet and Q&A.
According to fans who attended the event, Charles arrived two hours late, leaving many fans stranded outside in hot weather.
YouTubers Chloe Macdonald and Dan Locke, who are behind a channel called Exploration Date, also attended the event, and vlogged their experience. In their video, Macdonald and Locke said they waited two hours for Charles to arrive and that he “wasn’t himself” during his five-minute-long Q&A session.
Charles’ merchandise website, Sisters Apparel, appears to have been taken down since Westbrook’s video was released.
Tumblr media

Sisters Apparel
The website once stocked sweatshirts, T-shirts, joggers, phone cases, and other products emblazoned with Charles’ catchphrase: “sisters.”
But on Monday, a visit to the Sisters Apparel website brought viewers to a black-and-white page that read, “Will be opening soon…” The website also said it is “currently under construction,” and offered an email sign-up for fans to learn about “launch updates.”
On Tuesday, the website appeared to have undergone another change, as a privacy-error message appears on its homepage.
While Charles and Sisters Apparel have yet to share any information about the website, some fans believe that Jeffree Star might have something to do with its apparent disappearance.
On Twitter, fans have pointed out that Sisters Apparel is stocked by Killer Merch, a company that Jeffree Star co-owns. Some believe that, because Star has sided with Westbrook, he may have chosen to remove Charles’ website from his company’s roster.
Representatives for James Charles and Tati Westbrook did not immediately reply to INSIDER’s request for comment.

Media 104: Assignment 2: Short Discussion Paper
YouTube provides lots of interactive processes which afford and influence users to Social Capital, Social Norms, and Social surveillance advantages. These processes have an impact on the affordances users get whilst using the social platform.
YouTube is “the largest and most popular video-based social media website. YouTube has over 1 billion website visitors per month and is the second most popular search engine behind google” (Antony Maina. 2017). YouTube users gain a Social Capital advantage through subscribers, Ads and self-promotion, these features affect the social norms in the YouTube community and all have a social surveillance effect as the users are putting themselves out there to the entire world to judge, which affords YouTubers to make a career for themselves and earn an income.
Social Capital is about the popularity and success through a social media platform, Social Capital is trusting relationships that allow you to support one another, It’s what you build up when you’re a part of a trusting community. YouTube is a platform where users gain Social Capital as they are putting themselves out there to the entire world to build a fan base that fits the criteria of your content. The subscribe feature allows users to build up a following and community of fans. This button is used to attain social capital and convert their popularity into economic capital as YouTube affords people to make a career for successful users and eventually earn an income and use the platform as a sustainable job. Once a user has used that subscribe feature, another feature is used to gain even more of a social capital, The Bell icon is a feature users can use for their favourite YouTubers, this allows them to receive a notification every time they post. If people use this bell feature on your channel, you may see yourself getting more views faster, as your followers are being notified immediately after you post resulting in the user gaining social capital. Famous YouTubers have social capital as they call their fans family, or creating little names for their following, making the community of fans feel like friends or family, for an example, famous YouTuber Trisha Paytas calls her fans “Trishy’s Little Fishies”, this is an example of how Trisha uses Social Capital to build more of a following. YouTuber’s gain social capital through promoting and advertising certain companies. For example, Trisha Paytas promotes the company ‘Adam and Eve’  which is an online adult store, she gives out promotion codes so her followers can get discounts, this is social capital as it brings YouTubers together with big companies, enhancing each other’s views and buyers. Reading a Scholar source on Social Capital I came across an interview explaining how social capital is increased by the type of content posted on social media. “Interviewer: Do you feel like people put stuff on Facebook trying to elicit a type of reaction from other people?” The interviewee Josh replies with “Definitely, like insulting other people. Posting pictures that they’ve taken of themselves etc. or trying to get other people to like them” (Marwick vol.9). This is used on YouTube to gain Social Capital as certain YouTubers post content they know will draw attention to their channel, resulting in more views.
Example of Trisha promoting a company to gain Social Capital
Tumblr media
The Social Capital acts discussed above, are all usually influenced by the social norms on the platform. “Social norms are the rules of behaviour that are considered acceptable in a group or society. People who do not follow these norms may be shunned or suffer consequence” (YourDictionary,2017). YouTube has certain Social Norms that must be followed to be successful. The content a user posts determines what audience they will have, and how much of a following they will get, this is the reason why most popular YouTubers post similar content because they want to be socially normal and accepted. Buzzfeed is a leading independent digital media company that delivers news and entertainment to hundreds of millions of people around the world, one of their main platforms is YouTube. Buzzfeed is a channel that is an example of the social norms around YouTube. They post content they know people will like, they try hard to keep up with all the latest scandals and trends, and incorporate them into their content. They aren’t original at all. Buzzfeed star Candace Lowry came out to the public about her departure from Buzzfeed and explained that she wanted “to be able to create her own path” and to have “creative freedom” (Spangler, Todd). She explained that Buzzfeed was making her post certain content that she had no interest in, however it would boost views and popularity. Ironically, she made a “Why I Left Buzzfeed” video because she was trained by them to focus on creating content that can go viral and be socially normal, with big bold titles, this worked as she gained 8.6 million views. This idea of having to post certain content on YouTube to be socially normal has taken over almost every popular YouTuber today. Looking at Famous YouTubers content shows that to be a successful YouTuber, you need to follow the social norms of the social media platform. An example of famous YouTubers following the social norms, is looking at the content they post. I looked at Shane Dawson, Zoella, and Joey Graceffa. All these influencers have millions of followers who watch their content every day. I noticed these three YouTubers all post very similar content with catchy titles. Common video ideas such as “The Boyfriend Tag” or a “Draw my life” video is socially acceptable and normal to post on YouTube nowadays. All three of these influencers have made these videos and have followed the social norms of posting the content to build a social capital.
Tumblr media
As talked about previously, YouTubers promoting products or being sponsored by companies is also socially normal for big-time users, there’s almost a pressure that to be a successful YouTuber, you must be sponsored by something and promote it in your content. Shane Dawson expresses this idea in his first sponsor video, he lets everyone know how much of a big deal it is for him to be sponsored by the company ‘Best Fiends’ he mentions that he “finally got sponsored!” and that he’s “Never been sponsored before”, he celebrates this with a cake and balloons as if it was somebody’s birthday, he tells his mother in the video that “there’s a lot of YouTubers that always get sponsored, and I’m like dam how come I don’t!” (Shane Dawson). This is Shane’s way of celebrating his success. He’s not the only YouTuber to be sponsored by this certain company, in fact, almost every other successful YouTuber has been as well, and Shane was happy as he is finally like the other famous YouTubers and is following the norms of the community.
Tumblr media
Keeping up to the Social norms and posting “draw my life” videos influences the users Social Surveillance as it is giving the viewers a background check of the YouTuber, looking inside of their past and current situations in life. “Social surveillance is the use of Web 2.0 sites like Twitter, Facebook to see what friends, family, and acquaintances are up to” This is also relevant to YouTube, and targeted towards YouTubers that ‘vlog’, as we get a view inside of their personal life. “These technologies are designed for users to continually investigate digital traces left by the people they are connected to through social media” (Marwick, Alice). YouTube content all have a social surveillance effect as it is exposing their life’s. Trisha Paytas exposes her life in her videos by uploading daily vlogs uncovering her lifestyle to the entire world. YouTube is a very public platform and the only way of gaining views and followers is to make your content public. The privacy settings are very limited on YouTube if you are wanting to make a career and income out of it, so users must be aware of the social surveillance once starting YouTube. Social surveillance can have negative effects on YouTube, as users are obeying by the social norms to gain social capital, and the content they post can be revealing and potentially be co-opted for disruptive acts. YouTuber ‘Freelee’ also known as the ‘Banana girl’ is an example of using the platform for disruptive acts. She uses YouTube to express her feelings on veganism, exposing other YouTubers lifestyles in a negative way. Freelee has exposed and tormented Trisha Paytas numerous times causing drama throughout YouTube. Freelee’s way of gaining social capital is to expose others in a harsh way and to gain views on top of this, she uses click bait, which is another disruptive act on the social media platform, as its false advertising. Posting videos with the title “eating meat!”(Freelee Eats Meat!) draws her fan base in, as most of her following will most likely be vegan, and look up to her as being vegan, so when she makes this bold title, it’s instant scandal and viewers watch the video, later to find out it was her way of drawing people in to increase views. Freelee affords exposing other YouTubers to make a career and income through YouTube. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg states that “Privacy is no longer a norm” (“that’s just creepy: When Privacy Settings Aren’t Enough”). This explains why more YouTubers today expose others, as it gets them more views, and privacy is no longer followed by the rules in social media.
Example of Freelee exposing Trisha’s life in order to gain views
Tumblr media
Many other channels on YouTube are purely made to disrupt and expose others. As YouTube is such an open platform, nearly anyone can make content out of anything. TMZ is another example of using YouTube for disruptive acts. TMZ is a channel which claims to provide latest celebrity gossip and entertainment news, however, they most always just end up leaking false news which often makes the celebrity sound bad. Their way of constructing the news is on YouTube, which can cause disruptive behaviour on the platform such as nasty comments or videos are made in response, since YouTube is such a popular platform, people use it so the message they are wanting to spread, goes viral or gets around appose to other social platforms such as Facebook, which isn’t as good for click bait and grabbing people’s attention worldwide.
Tumblr media
In Summary, YouTube is a popular social platform that does provide processes for users to gain a social capital by obeying by the social norms, which can affect their privacy and social surveillance in use of the platform. Using popular YouTubers such as Shane Dawson, Joey Graceffa, Zoella, Trisha Paytas and Freelee, are all examples of the processes spoken above, which back up the thesis and ideas on the advantages and disadvantages of this platform.
