Boris Johnson prepares to outline tests

Boris Johnson is preparing to outline the tests the government will use to determine whether foreign travel could resume this summer, after four more countries were added to the “red list” of areas from which almost all arrivals are banned.

The government announced on Friday that the Philippines, Pakistan, Kenya, and Bangladesh would join 35 other countries on the list, as ministers sought to prevent potentially vaccine-resistant variants of Covid-19 from entering the UK.

UK and Irish nationals and residents can return from red-list countries but they must pay to enter compulsory hotel quarantine.

The changes will come into effect at 4am on 9 April. “The government has made it consistently clear it will take decisive action if necessary to contain the virus and has added these destinations to the red list to protect public health,” a government statement said.

To the dismay of some experts, ministers have rejected the idea of widening the list to include European countries such as France and Germany, where a third wave of Covid infections is causing growing concern about the potential for mutations.

“It is bonkers,” said Gabriel Scally, a visiting professor of public health at the University of Bristol and a member of the Independent Sage committee, adding that everyone entering the country should go into hotel quarantine.

“The biggest risks are from countries on our doorstep where the virus is engaged in exponential growth, it is out of control, and France is definitely one of them.”

He added: “The only thing that is saving the UK at the moment is the high levels of vaccination – but the government is putting all that progress at risk by having a public health policy on our borders that is a leaky sieve.”

Dr Kit Yates, the co-director of the centre for mathematical biology at the University of Bath and also a member of Independent Sage, said the risks would increase as Covid restrictions were eased, potentially increasing the R-number.

“New importations have occurred at a time when the reproduction number has been less than one and chains of transmission are more likely to be broken naturally,” he said. “The worry is that this will no longer be the case as we begin to open up.”

The R number is the average number of people an infected person goes on to infect: when it is above 1 an epidemic can grow exponentially and when it is below 1 the disease will eventually fizzle out. Among concerns, Yates noted the South Africa variant was at high levels in countries which were not yet on the government’s “red list”.

The prime minister told the liaison committee of senior MPs last week that placing France on the red list could not be ruled out, but underlined the close trading and other ties between the two countries that would make it difficult to implement.

“We are certainly looking at that but people should be under no illusions that it would have consequences,” Johnson said, stressing the high volume of cross-channel trade.

The prime minister is expected to set out further details on Monday of how and when foreign travel could potentially resume, with a No 10 source warning the government would continue to be “pretty tough on borders” for the time being.

Ministers are known to be considering a “traffic light” system, with the toughest quarantine and testing restrictions applied to red list countries, while quarantine-free travel could potentially be opened up to “green” countries.

Government sources confirmed that a key criterion in deciding which countries would be “green” would be the proportion of the population that is vaccinated, as well as the prevalence of “variants of concern”.

Places with the highest rates of vaccination at present include the US, Israel, Chile and the Maldives.

The government’s roadmap says foreign travel will not resume before 17 May at the earliest. For the time being, travel for all but a few essential purposes remains banned.

In Kenya, the travel ban to the UK had been widely predicted, and reaction has been largely muted. But some in the eastern African economic powerhouse and major tourist destination accused the UK of “medical racism”.

“Once the US, UK and EU reach herd immunity by June, it will close itself against Africa, Latin America, Middle East and Asia. It will be medical racism,” Donald Kipkorir, a lawyer in Nairobi, told the Nation newspaper.

Others pointed out that the ban came days after British soldiers tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving in Kenya. The British army training camp in Kenya has been placed in enhanced isolation after positive tests by a “very small number of soldiers”, the British high commission in Nairobi said.

The decision will reinforce widespread resentment at western measures to protect economies and public health, as even wealthier African countries struggle to procure vaccines. The ban will further damage the Kenyan tourist industry, removing one of the few remaining direct transport links between the UK and sub-Saharan Africa.

Health campaigners in the Philippines lamented the travel ban. Dr Joseph Carabeo, the co-convener of the campaign group Shape Up, which has campaigned for changes to Manila’s Covid strategy, said the UK’s decision was understandable, given the surge in infections.

But he added that he hoped the UK would recognise that sharing vaccine supplies fairly around the world would also protect the British public in the long term. “Even if you have herd immunity in your country, it is still a small globe,” he said.

In Pakistan, where cases are also surging, the prime minister, Imran Khan, has said the recent variant of the virus has been brought by people from the UK who have travelled to Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar.

One of the veteran queens in the cast, Sister Sister has brought her original makeup skills and unique fashion perspective to the mainstage of RuPaul's Drag Race UK season 2. Throughout the season, Sister Sister flew mostly under the radar without ruffling any feathers. The queen only landed in the Bottom Two for the first time during episode four, but she was automatically kept around as co-star Ginny Lemon walked off the stage while their Lip Sync For Your Life was still going on. Despite having concerns for her status in the competition, Sister Sister has been doing pretty well ever since.

After Ginny Lemon quit Drag Race UK, the cast was informed about the COVID-19 pandemic - which was then only getting started - and had to leave the werkroom immediately. Production had to stay down for seven months, forcing the queens to stay in their houses during this very long period. Thankfully, the producers were able to resume filming and could bring back these queens to finish off the season. With a new and improved smile, Sister Sister did a good job performing "UK Hun?" with her girl group Bananadrama and did not disappoint in the subsequent Snatch Game challenge.

Sister Sister is now officially in the Top 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race UK season 2, which is a very prestigious spot for any contestant within this franchise. At 32 years old, Sister Sister lives and works in Liverpool, England. The queen has always been inspired by female-led British comedy, using references such as French and Saunders, as well as Victoria Wood. And yet, Sister Sister also amazes with her very original looks and makeup skills. Aesthetically, this queen is very inspired by 1980s fashion and over-the-top makeup. She went into the competition considering herself an underdog, but she's held her own throughout the season.

On Instagram, Drag Race UK legend Sister Sister has so far accumulated over 35,000 followers. The queen posts a wide variety of content - from hilarious goofy pictures to artsy shots that could very well be featured in fashion publications. Sister Sister's original makeup style includes a blue, gliterry circle around her mouth while featuring hot red lips.

There's still time for Sister Sister to win her first RuPeter badge and go all the way on RuPaul's Drag Race UK season 2. The fans will certainly be rooting for this queen and keeping up with her on social media.

The ‘Final 4’ Talk ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ All Stars Season 3

In the final episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, the final 4 were Shangela, Trixie, Kennedy and BeBe.

For the final maxi challenge, the girls need to write, sing and dance in the most ambitious production number in drag race history. Starting with Ru Paul’s song “Kitty Girl” the contestants need to compose and perform a solo that shows the world that they came to slay. Later, with Todrick Hall, they will need to come up with choreographer that makes them stand out from their competitors. Then Ru informs them that the eliminated queens are coming back again, and they will play a vital role in the final evaluations. The category for the runway was best drag eleganza extravaganza!

Everyone was good in the Maxi challenge and the runway. The 2 best in the maxi were Kennedy and Shangela and on the runway it was Shangela and Trixie. Ru then explained that the top 4 would have to meet with the eliminated queens who would then vote on who should be the top 2.

In the end the queens chose Kennedy and Trixie and after the Lip Synch Ru chose Trixie as the winner of All Stars 3.

It was a pleasure to sit down with all four finalists, just one day after the finale.

How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race the first time?

Kennedy – It has changed tremendously. I get to see and entertain the world. It’s what I have always wanted.

Bebe – OMG, well it was an amazing platform and now I get the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people and travel a lot. I love entertaining worldwide. I am very grateful.

Trixie – Katya and I always say it takes your life from black and white to color. I used to lip sych at 7 pm for 10 people and now I go on national and international tours and I have my own TV show.

Shangela – Since season 2 and 3 I have been able to travel the world and build a legion of fans that I love. I am so happy to grow and evolve. I grew up in a small town and I never thought this would happen to me, but I am so grateful and thankful that it did! 

What have been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni?

Kennedy – I love Seattle, and I also love Nebraska as well as Chicago, and of course I always love to come back to Florida.

Bebe – I have gone to so many places. I love Austin Texas, and Seattle. I also love some of the small cities as they appreciate and love drag so much.

Trixie – To me it was San Francisco, London, Dallas and Chicago.

Shangela – London, Dublin, New York, Chicago and Austin Texas, and of course my home of Dallas.

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back, and if so what made you come back?  

Kennedy – I didn’t think twice about it. I said yes before the sentence was finished. It had been two years since season 7 and I felt like it would be a perfect opportunity for a boost. Additionally I wanted to go and prove myself and let them have it again.

Bebe – When the opportunity presented itself, I knew it was going to be polarizing and lots of pressure, so I took a little time to think about it. I decided that my voice was needed there and I said yes.

Trixie – I feel like with the work I have done outside of the show I have proven myself to audiences, but I wanted to prove something to myself. I needed the do over to try and re write my wrongs and prove I could do it. 

Shangela – I am Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and I will always come back! I was super excited to be asked and I wanted to showcase how much I have grown.

How did you prepare differently for All Stars than you did the first time you were on the show?

Kennedy – The only thing I did different is that this time I actually had a closet filled with clothes to bring. They were mine, not borrowed.

Bebe – honestly I prepared the same way, and went with the same strategy…to be authentic.

Trixie – I had more money so I could bring nicer clothes and hair. I also brought my guitar and harp. One of the things I have learned after my first time on Drag Race is that you can’t really prepare as you don’t know what they are going to throw at you.

Shangela – I knew that every opportunity on the runway and in front of Ru Paul I would want to create a moment. I think and hope I did that!

If you got to choose the top two, (of the four) who would it have been and why?

Kennedy – Of course I would have picked myself, and Shangela. I say Shangela because outside of Ben she was the frontrunner, and she has come so far. She really helped make the show.

Bebe – I will pass on that question.

Trixie – Myself and Shangela as I think we did a great job in the competition and also exemplify that you can create a great career whether or not you win!

Shangela – Myself, as I had the strongest track record of the season and I would have also chosen ….well honestly, they were all good and I can make a case for all 3, so I can’t choose!

How hard was it to keep the secret of who was in the top two all these months since filming?

Kennedy – It wasn’t hard, because I believe in the process of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I would never want to ruin the brand.

Bebe – It wasn’t hard for me, because when I did drag race originally no one even knew I went on the show. So I can keep a secret.

Trixie – I am a terrible secret keeper so it was a lot of focus. However, letting everyone you know be surprised is kind of worth it

Shangela – You know when we film something we have to hold everything that happens confidential. It’s difficult, but it’s part of the process.  Honestly, I have been working so much, and that made it a lot easier.

Is there something about you that the fans would be surprised to know?

Kennedy – No, I am pretty much an open book

Bebe – That I am very goofy and silly. When people meet me at the Meet and Greets they are surprised.

Trixie –Outside of drag I am somewhat withdrawn. AS Ru Paul says “I am an introvert that masquerades as an extrovert”

Shangela – I am pretty much an open book. They know if they meet me in real life they are getting the exact same person they see on TV! Wait, I know, my fans may not know that I am a big fan of Game of Thrones. 

What’s does the future hold for you?

Kennedy – My music single “Moving Up” just dropped on itunes today. The Video for the ssingle is on my website. I am going to go work on some more music and continue to tour the world. My dream is to get on Broadway.

Bebe – I just launched a kick starter to release the film product called “Being Bebe,” which has documented me for the last 12 years of my artistry.  I am also in the studio working on a new album and working on a Jungle Kitty Tour.

Trixie – Well my album has just come out and I am about to embark on a 40 city tour of the United States. The Trixie and Katya Show (now featuring Bob the Drag Queen) is still on Viceland  every Wed at 10:30.

Shangela – I came in the door as a working girl professional and I am leaving the door as a working girl professional…LOL! I have a new song called “Pay Me” that just dropped on itunes yesterday. I will be appearing in Bianca Del Rio’s sequel in Hurricane Bianca 2. I also have a role in the Lady Gaga’s film called “A Star is Born,” which is directed by Bradley Cooper. Also I have written a new stand-up comedy “Shangela is Shook” and it is touring the UK in April and Australia in December and then back to the US. I am also Co-Producing “Werq The World” which will tour 17 cities in Europe in the end of May. 

One question for the winner, Trixie…What are you doing with the money? 

I’m trash for the country that has never had anything, so I am just going to save it just in case!

Q&A: ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ All-Stars Contestant Morgan McMichaels

In week 1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season 3 we met the competitors, which we were announced a few months earlier, they are: Aja (season nine; from Brooklyn NY), BenDeLareme (season six; from Seattle, WA), Chi Chi DeVayne (season eight; from Shreveport, LA), Kennedy Davenport (season seven; from Dallas, TX), Milk (season six; from New York, NY), Morgan McMichaels (season two; from Los Angeles, CA), Shangela (seasons two & three; from Los Angeles, CA), Thorgy Thor (season eight; from Brooklyn, NY), and Trixie Mattel. What we weren’t told a few months ago is that there would be a surprise contestant in Bebe Zahara Benet, the winner of season 1.

This week’s episode only featured a maxi challenge, and the contestants were challenged to gag the judges with an “All Star Variety Show.” In the end, the top 2 were Aja and BenDeLaCrème who Lip Synched for their legacy, and the winner won $10,000, and also had to decide which of the bottom two (Morgan or Chi Chi) would be eliminated . Ben won and decided to send Morgan home, because unlike most of the all-stars, Morgan was vocal that she would send home her strongest competitor rather than the weakest link.

How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race?

Leaps and bounds as I have traveled the world and I have gone to the most exotic countries and meet tons of fans. The pay hike is always appreciated and due to the extra income I am trying to establish a property and get my life together.

What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as RuPaul alumni?

Getting to go home to the UK is always a plus. I got to see Lima Peru, which was beautiful and my mom in Australia. I just go t to go to Hawaii for the first time, which was amazing.  A benefit of traveling around the world is you get to see all the types of drag, and learn from it. 

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back, and if so what made you come back?  

You don’t say no to momma Ru! It was a tremendous opportunity to let people see how I have grown. I really wanted the crown and a place on the wall.

How did you prepare differently for all stars than you did the first time you were on the show?

I was definitely more focused and involved with my looks. I had a game plan this time.

Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win?

I think it’s going to be a hard decision—everyone is so talented. These girls are coming for blood. I am very intrigued to see who wins.

What’s ahead for Morgan?

I think that I am going to release my jingle from the episode and some more music projects and hopefully have a great time.
