Stop Doing These 10 Fighting Game Bad Habits in 2023
Fighting game players (new & old) shares similar issues Here are 10 #fgc bad habits to leave in 2023 Not practicing vs the game’s characters & strategies. It's okay to only use one character/strategy but don't let that stop you from studying the rest of the game. Not learning from mistakes or analyzing your losses. It's okay to lose but figure out why you are losing so you can be better…

I Did Nothing Productive All Day...
Tumblr media
If I had the money to fund my own fighting game....well, this wouldn't be my first pick but screw it I'm in a funk and I need something to fiddle with. If I were able to do this I'd like it to be a 2D fighter in a similar graphics engine to Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive. Technically a four button fighter (Light, Medium, Heavy, Dash) but with a fifth "Contract" button which would.....uhhh.....I dunno do some kind of faustian bargain mechanic attack, like the Infinity Stones from MVCInfinite but with even more broken utility and a health cost to balance it? Or fuck it, just have it be the tag attack button for a 2v2 mode. Dash would be a medium strength lunge attack going up to 10 feet.
Actually y'know what? Easy EX Moves at 6% of your health! Just hitting this button (and a single directional input) gives you easy access to otherwise hard to trigger EX Moves when you need it but at the cost of some health. Thing is that spent health is now treated as Provisional Damage, you'd be able to get it back if you manage to perform that same EX Move (and successfully hit with it) using the intended but difficult Meter Burn button input. Of course if you get hit before you do this you lose that spent health permanently. The "Contract" button would stop working the moment you hit 5% of a given round.
I'd have the combo system be KI 2013 to a T, as such it would have a combo breaker system that's actually worth a damn to the point you wouldn't really need a comeback mechanic, having a damage decay to prevent TOD Combo bullshit. Supers would be real time and implement a meter system like KI, two stocks max, at least one of a character's supers would require both bars. I'd of course have a regular NRS style method to use EX Moves, needing at least 50% of a single bar to use. If a comeback mechanic must be implemented I'd have it be a Fatal Blow that does up to 60% damage in one go but then disables your access to EX Moves, Supers and even the "Contract" button. _______________________________________________________ [LAUNCH ROSTER; At best this would more than likely be an indy project, expectations for a big roster would have to be significantly tempered. At best I could see it launching with a minimum of 8.]
FRISK (Was banished to Hell by cultists, now fights to escape this waking nightmare.) A pretty straight forward stance character, changing up normals by switching between the fast but weak Knife, the medium stat Baseball Bat and the strong but slow Axe. Specials and Supers would be the same across all three stances, even having 3 unique specials that allow for instant switching during combos. Would have an exclusive Spot Dodge like Videl, one that can be EX'ed leading into a counter attack. Finally, a secret 10 second super mode that sees Frisk suddenly gaining powers similar to Sans, replacing the spot dodge with an Ultra Instinct dodge and giving brief access to Ermac style command grabs.
CHARLIE (Seek to claim Frisk's soul in a bid to protect them from the rest of Hell.) We have SF6 Manon at home. A decent array of command grabs that see Charlie forcing the opponent into brief spurts of ballroom dancing or ballot. Would also have some short range fire zoning that go about mid range, more for applying pressure than outright projectile spamming. Would also have a "sticky grenade" mechanic similar to KI 2013 Cinder, costing some meter to plant a will-o-wisp (max of 1) that can be detonated to break through the opponent's block.
PAPYRUS (A defective Revenant that has befriended Frisk, the first real friend that he even had.) A character prone to "falling to pieces" much like Nadia Fortune and MK1 Havik, using detachable limbs as both bludgeoning objects and makeshift boomerang weapons. In addition he'd have access to magic "bone traps" that come off like variations of Terry Bogard's Power Wave and Shang Tsung's Ground Skull. Would even have a "Blue Attack" super that momentarily disables the opponent's ability to jump for at least 8 seconds.
VAGGIE (Charlie's wife, helping the princess in her efforts to save Frisk.) Pretty much a greatest hits compilation of Kitana, Mileena and Jade. To this end I'd have her adopt the use of a three sickle blade throwing glaive as both a melee weapon and boomerang projectile, saving her spear for hard hitting specials and supers.
UNDYNE (Hell Knight servant of Lilith Morningstar sent to acquire Frisk before anyone else.) A small vicious collection of command parries in merfolk form, even having the ability to reflect the opponent's projectiles right back to them. Would have a pretty straight forward spear toss and a few takes on MK1 Shang Tsung's Bed of Spikes. Would have an "Undying" mechanic similar to KI 2013 T.J.Combo's Last Breath.
ANGEL DUST (A porn star that needs that 666 Trillion bounty on Frisk's head for..."freedom"...) Pretty much a hyper sexualized version of VS Series Spiderman but with the added flourish of a pair of Chicago Typewriters. Would have the most easy to spam projectiles but with an ammo count mechanic to keep track off, projectiles fired cannot do chip damage to blocking opponents.
FLOWEY (A mysterious entity who has a vested interest in Frisk and those that pursue them.) Smallest character bar none reaching up to Frisk's leg in height. Would pretty much be Smash Bros Piranha Plant with the added utility of vine whipping attacks and "Friendliness Pellets" that can be guided in diagonal trick shots. Would also have a hidden 10 second "Omega Flowey" super mode that transforms them into a hideous monstrosity fastened to the ceiling.
ALASTOR (Seeking to control Charlie, he too goes after Frisk to use them as deal making leverage.) We have MK1 Quan-Chi at home, also a bit of MKX Shinnok. _______________________________________________________ [ARCADE MODE BOSSES]
ADAM (Seeks to use Frisk's soul to complete the "Seven Hearts Ceremony" which will give him dominion over both Heaven and Hell.) Proverbial Goro of the game. We have SC6 Azwel at home. His ego leaves him prone to taunting the player leaving him open to attack for brief moments. Is able to recover health but this also leaves him open to attack.
ASRIEL THE GOD OF HYPERDEATH (In desperation Adam makes a deal with Flowey, dooming the first man to become the new vessel for the very eldritch deity that those cultists worship. There is no Adam anymore, only Asriel Dreemurr.) Final Boss. Pretty much what would happen if GG Justice, MVC1 Onslaught and MVC3 Dark Phoenix hate fucked in a hateful threeway, producing an extremely hateful baby best described as Borderline SNK Boss Syndrome. Would be an absolute mistake to make them playable. _______________________________________________________ [ADDITIONAL ROSTER; Hopefully I'd be able to give these extra characters as free updates.]
ALPHYS (Quit her job at Vox Industries in protest of him using HER tech to try and kill a child! As such she befriends Frisk.) Pilots a mech that would make Tron Bonne jealous. Said mech having a similar fram to GG Potemkin, boasting a host of built in weapons and tricks similar to MVC1 War Machine and Injustice Lex Luthor.
CHERRI BOMB (Angel Dust's ride or die best friend, helping him to acquire that 666 Trillion Bounty.) Pretty much what would happen if Cyrax's infamous Bomb was hit with gamma radiation and mutated into a whole move set onto itself. Normals involve extensive use of a crowbar.
SUSIE (Yet another in an ever increasing lists of demons pining for that 666 Trillion Bounty.) A towering beast with a battle axe, a few rudimentary magic spells and enough mass to and muscle to turn SF3 Hugo into a chew toy.
HUSK (The Radio Demon's slave sent to hinder Charlie and Vaggie at every turn possible.) Basically what would happen if VS. Series Wolverine suddenly grew wings giving him air combo supremacy. Might have access to a "Booze" mechanic that gives him brief bursts of strength and aggression at the cost of sluggish controls.
BURGERPANTS (A disgruntled fast food employee that sees the 666 Trillion bounty as a retirement fund there for the taking.) Has gone completely postal, using the pump action shotgun he got his hands on as both melee weapon and projectile launching device, even uses it to do blast propelled air dashes and double jumps. Has a whole back pack of other severe abuses of the second amendment.
STOLAS (An old friend of the Morningstar family, was asked to keep tabs on Charlie making sure she doesn't go rogue.) We have Smash Bros Ganondorf at home (albeit significantly faster). Borrows a few tricks from the KI 2013 Hisako playbook. Many of his more devastating moves emulate Dracula from the Castlevania series.
METTATON EX (Seeks the 666 Trillion bounty to revitalize his currently floundering fast food chain.) Jojo Poses, Jojo Poses Everywhere. Majority of normals would have heavy emphasis on kicking much like Eddie Gordo and Han Juri, saving his robotic arms for the Heavy button and certain hook shot specials. Would also get a 10 second "Mettaton NEO" super mode gaining air dashes and more hard hitting projectile spam.
LUCIFER (The King of Hell, forced to step onto the streets upon hearing news that his daughter Charlie is "misbehaving"...) Borderline MVC3 Vergil tempered by joke character quirks, would probably be the first to get banned from tournament play. _______________________________________________________ [POSSIBLE GUEST CHARACTERS; Where the real money is made. Would not be even remotely possible to offer these as free updates. Also I'd just bunch them all into a single slot similar to how the DLC was handled in MK9, requiring you to hit down additional times to cycle through the available characters.]
V1 (Ultrakill) (Frisk activated this "forbidden robot" to escape the V's, not fully knowing just what it was they unleashed....) An absolute monster twisting the very concept of the "shoto fighter" into a display of violence and brutality that would make even Akuma wince. I would also have V1 utilize a nasty command grab or two that drains blood from the opponent to heal itself.
POMNI (Amazing Digital Circus) (A client of the Hazbin Hotel, has become fiercely loyal to Charlie for being given house and home.) If DBF Ginyu was shorter and had crippling anxiety, summoning Ratha, Zooble and Jax for an array of MK1 Kameo style assists. On her own she would have "game glitches" that let her teleport relentlessly.
PEPPINO (Pizza Tower) (Papyrus ordered a pizza for Frisk, now this madman is hellbent on delivering said pizza in 30 minutes or less.) Would be grapple and rushdown god devoid of projectiles and other such extraneous abilities, human combat in its most purest form.
ROXY THE WOLF (FNAF Security Breach) (A pizzaria animatronic that Papyrus reprogrammed to hinder the Radio Demon.) We have GG Ino at home. Would also have a "Damaged State" mechanic gaining new more monstrous specials the more damage she takes during the match.
JUDGEMENT (Helltaker) (One of the feared Furies sent to quell the sudden escalation of chaos.) We have MKX Takeda at home REVENGEANCE!!! Would have masochist abilities to hurt herself gaining drastic boosts in strength and speed for brief moments (losing her ability to do combos for the duration).
SPAWN (Allies himself with Frisk out of pure spite for both the Overlords of Hell and the Morningstar Family.) Look I know the legal hoops and budget draining fees it would take to get this guy but just let me dream dammit! I'd have him be the best that MK11 Spawn had to offer with all the bad fat trimmed out, given a good helping of SF4 Oni to give him an added sense of "last person to fuck with".

Weird thoughts about Dragon Ball FighterZ's story
So, it might be that I watched too much of the team four star lets play of the story mode and how much they talk about fetishes, but one thing that stands out to me is the Link System, and how it connects, possibly, to Dr. Gero's plans.
youtube
The Link System was, supposedly, made by Gero, to link a soul to a body, to control that body, including the bodies of his androids. In the game, it's treated mostly as an excuse for the player to feel involved, and to explain why only one character is controlled at a time. At the start of the game, the player's soul has complete control over Goku, its only by science from Bulma that Goku regains his own personality and will, leaving the player in control in gameplay.
All in all, if Gero had ever gotten the link system to work when he was alive, which apparently he couldn't, it would have solved a lot of the problems he had of his creations being willful and rebelling against him.
And, we already know that Gero eventually put his own brain in an android body, so him previously attempting to make an android and linking his soul to it, but then resorting to the brain transfer when that didn't work. Makes a kind of sense, to me anyway.
It even makes the details of Androids 16 and 21, blatant attempts to recreate his seemingly lost family members (although the story of FighterZ is weird with 21, at some points implying Gero's wife Vomi was turned into 21 like 17 and 18 but also that 21 is a bioandroid like Cell created 10 years ago) make a bit of sense, if he could link his son's soul to 16, his wife to 21, and himself to 20, they could all be a family again and live together forever.
What makes things. Weirder. Is where Cell fits in. Like, for starters, the timeline makes no damned sense, because Cell wasn't completed in the future timeline until Age 786, and the events of FighterZ take place during Super in Age 779. Although, when Cell emerged, those were in timelines with very different pasts than the "main" timeline. For starters, Cell didn't emerge in a timeline after Cell happened. And while Buu was always on Earth, the Buu Saga hadn't happened, and the indications of the Super Manga and other material is that Future Babidi didn't try to go after Buu in that timeline until after Trunks already killed Cell.
Cell was an abandoned project worked on by Gero's computer after he gave up, and while in the Cell Saga Trunks and Krillin destroy the computer and the larval Cell. If Gero had other labs and computers working on projects, it makes a kind of sense those would adapt to changing circumstances.
But what's weird about Cell, is that, if we factor in the Link System. Was Gero intending Cell to be his new body? Before he gave up and let his computer work on it?
And, worse, Evil 21 has a special transformation when she absorbs Cell, like how Cell absorbs 17 and 18. So, like.
Was Gero's endgame to put his soul in Cell, and then get vored by his wife?

Across the Netflix-Verse: Joshua Sumter Meets She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
SYNOPSIS: When creative and autistic Joshua Sumter teams up with orphan-turned-heroine/warrior princess Adora, Etheria will never be the same! But together, they just might save the universe. Think you know the story of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power? Well, think again because Etheria will never be the same as Joshua Sumter stars (and returns) in his latest self-insert, Isekai-turned-multiversal, retelling epic that not only flips the script on the hit animated reboot from DreamWorks and Netflix by ND Stevenson to reimagine and change the events of the show...but also spans across the wild, the wacky, the scary, the magical, the mythical, and sometimes very mature worlds and universes of the Netflix-verse, a multiverse featuring your fan-favorite Netflix shows and movies. Based on the hit animated She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series and in the tradition of Space Jam (1996), it's an Isekai-turned-multiversal, dimension-spanning epic that reimagines the narrative of the show -- with the inclusion of Joshua Sumter as an unlikely, live-action hero who finds himself on a strange, animated world and beyond that is familiar but slightly changed.
Life was carefree for creative and autistic Joshua Sumter (That would be me) of Earth (Our universe, the real world) as he was enjoying yet another typical, relaxing day and cozy life eating food, reading media tie-in books and comic books, and writing fanfics. Everything was perfectly normal...that is, until he lands smack-dab into the war-torn planet that is oddly familiar but yet slightly changed. It is the planet of Etheria, the world and universe of the hit animated reboot series from Netflix and DreamWorks She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, where an ongoing, full-blown war ensues and rages on between the princess-led Rebellion that wants to maintain peace and harmony for all of Etheria and the dreaded Horde that wants to conquer the planet in the name of its leader, Hordak.
At first, Joshua believes under the impression that everything going on is all just a dream of himself being in a reinterpretation of the rebooted TV series from the 80s as a full-fledged guest star, taking the first steps of his very own Isekai adventure when he bumps into Adora, Glimmer, and Bow, hangs out with them, and unknowingly accepting the full invitation to join in on the fray as a feature of his dream (All the way from Season 1 to the Battle of Bright Moon). But Joshua's enthusiasm falls flat when he quickly gets wrapped up in some very serious stuff during that experience, letting his newly found zany antics and madcap-style wits guide his ideas and actions enough to make Joshua fully consider the oddest possibility...that this ISN'T a dream after all.
Not only that, but the soul and consciousness of the previous She-Ra, Mara, resides in Joshua's body, along with all her past memories, allowing her to control his body as the two experienced many battles as possible in order to increase their combined strength. This transferal-like link allows both Joshua and Mara to communicate with each other, as if living in their shared mind, providing guidance and advice. When Mara manifests in the physical world as a corporeal spirit in her ethereal appearance and bluish glow, only Joshua can see her. Despite this unexpected turn of events, Joshua and Mara formed a cooperative relationship, much to Joshua's little shock and ire of Mara living inside him*. (*Similar to the term 'Emblems' from Fire Emblem: Engage; the Soul transferal from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; the Soul Link System from Dragon Ball FighterZ; Jaden/Yubel's relationship from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX; Byleth and Sothis from Fire Emblem: Three Houses; and Yuma and Astral's friendship from Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal in the trope of "Symbiotic Possession", "Fusion Dance", "Sharing A Body", and "Romantic Fusion")
Now forced into a whole, new universe, surrounded by characters he now considers his new Etheria pals, having the soul of Mara living inside him, and being completely aware that he's starring in his very own self-insert retelling of the animated show while helping Adora, Glimmer, Bow, and more allies like Perfuma, Mermista, Frosta, Sea Hawk, Spinnerella, and Netossa in their fight against the Horde, Joshua decides to flip the script on the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series to make some changes around here his own way by reimaging and changing events of the show that'll help turn things around for the future of Etheria and Adora's destiny...sort of.
As Joshua continues to influence the characters with his twisted action makajalaka of awesomeness in the form of a hard-hitting baseball bat that acts as his holy-sword-like weapon, his sense of imagination, his Official Handbook-level knowledge and more while imagining his fights in the style of the Persona 4 Arena games, Adora and her friends can't help wonder about what they make of Joshua and his bizarre, other-worldly perspective and shenanigans, not to mention how he fights like an entirely different person, courtesy of Mara's soul possessing him.
Along the way, Joshua later gets into numerous comedic adventures across the Netflix-Verse, a shared crossover multiverse of worlds and universes based on and inspired by your favorite Netflix shows and movies.
But when things in Etheria got a little too serious and with the help of the soul and consciousness of Mara, along with the animated worlds of the Netflix-Verse, will Joshua be able to beat the odds by letting loose the looniness and wreaking some hilarious mayhem in the process to help his new Etheria pals Adora, Glimmer, Bow, the Princess Alliance, and the Rebellion out of a real jam by saving the world his own way from a much, bigger threat than the Horde?
Based on and inspired by the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series by ND Stevenson and featuring the worlds of your favorite Netflix shows and movies such as "The Cuphead Show", "Green Eggs and Ham", "The Dragon Prince", "Tiger & Bunny", "We Can Be Heroes", "Lego Elves: Secrets of Elvendale", "The Sea Beast", "Maya and the Three", "Nimona", "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous", "Dragon Age: Absolution" and much more, be prepared for a block-busting, hard-partying, mind-blowing, world-hopping, fourth-wall-breaking, live-action/animation mayhem in this self-inserting tale that spans both our world and theirs. DISCLAIMER: In the tradition and style of Space Jam (1996) meets Epic (2013), the Kingdom Hearts series, Gwenpool, and other Isekai tropes, Across the Netflix-Verse: Joshua Sumter Meets She-Ra and the Princesses of Power basically reimagines and changes the narrative of the show (Seasons 1-5), but with the inclusion of, yours truly, Joshua Sumter, and new twists and different outcomes inspired by some of the She-Ra and the Princess of Power fan fictions than the ones in the actual show for "anyone who wants to enjoy an entirely, different story with some few changes".
The Netflix-Verse, as the name implies, is a shared multiverse of worlds and universes that are mostly based on, inspired by, and from your favorite Netflix shows and movies in the tradition of Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash-Up!, Sonic Prime, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and the Kingdom Hearts series. The main hub of the Netflix-Verse is a vast expanse of space between that resembles Netflix's home menu, composed and surrounded by posters that served as gateways to these worlds. From the wild, the wacky, the scary to the magical, the mythical, the epic and sometimes very mature, it's a dimension-spanning epic into these Netflix-based worlds.
Inspiration and allusions from...
Space Jam (1996) and Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) – Just like how Michael Jordan and Lebron James are live-action superstars entering a spectacular animated world and teaming up with the Looney Tunes in their two movies, Joshua Sumter (That would be me) does the same as he gets forced into the animated world of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power to help Adora and her friends in the princess-led Rebellion in their ongoing war against the dreaded Horde.
Epic (2013) – M.K. is a teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. In similarity, Joshua is a grown, autistic young man who finds himself transported to a war-torn planet based on a rebooted TV series from the 80s.
Kanji Tatsumi’s storyline from Persona 4: Arena – In Persona 4: Arena, Kanji Tatsumi still thinks that everything in the entire P1-Grand Prix tournament is all a dream until he eventually finds out it is in fact not, so when Joshua first lands smack-dab in Etheria, he believes that his experience in Etheria from Season 1 to the Battle of Bright Moon is all a reinterpretation/Isekai adventure dream, that is…until he eventually later finds out that it’s not a dream when he reaches the first episode of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power’s Season 2.
Kingdom Hearts and PowerPuff Girls: Super Smash-Up! – The Kingdom Hearts franchise features Disney-based worlds and how Sora embarks on an epic journey across the multiverse and encounters Disney and Final Fantasy characters in their respective worlds and helps them while the Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash-Up! comic crossover mini-series is a dimension-spanning epic inspired by Batman: The Brave and the Bold where Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup visit other Cartoon Network universes. In Across the Netflix-Verse: Joshua Sumter Meets She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Joshua did the same thing - this time, it features worlds and universes that are mostly based on and inspired by your favorite Netflix shows and movies. In actuality, the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power world Joshua was first isekai-ed into was one of the Netflix-based worlds in the Netflix-Verse, so he then later goes on a world-hopping journey across the Netflix-Verse and encounters main characters in their respective worlds like The Cuphead Show, Green Eggs and Ham, The Dragon Prince, Tiger & Bunny, We Can Be Heroes, Lego Elves: Secrets of Elvendale, The Sea Beast, Maya and the Three, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, Nimona, Firedrake: The Silver Dragon, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Dragon Age Absolution and helps them out.

About Me
Name(s): Ddddd, D, D⁵, anything like that... My elder sibling tends to call me DD on here, and a friend usually says 5Ds, so I'm pretty flexible with it.
Pronouns: I'm cool with any, really; most commonly called he/him, though.
Age: 18, first got Tumblr late into 17.
Interests: ...It's mostly just fighting games, lol. I first got into the genre from Street Fighter, which is also the one I'm most familiar with story-wise, but I'm pretty knowledgeable on other series' as well - my personal favourite fighting game is Dead or Alive 4. I also have an interest in Pokémon (not as much as I used to be, I know pretty much nothing about anything beyond Gen. 7.), and I listen to a lot of K-pop, but I'm not really in the fandom for that.
Focus: I started this blog to share my sprite art - I pretty much exclusively work in the style of SNK's Neo Geo Pocket fighting games, although I experiment with other styles occasionally. This is also where I post about and share my M.U.G.E.N. creations; I'm still very new to making stuff there, but I can only improve with time! You can find all of my currently public creations here.
Extra, less-important stuff below:
Identity stuff: From the UK, white, queer but I don't really care much about labels. Asexual is a simplified way of putting it, I suppose.
Other socials:
Sideblog for reblogging things & occasionally talking about non-pixels stuff.
DeviantArt for posting finished spritesheets of my characters.
YouTube for announcing my character releases, and sharing WIP updates and occasional combos.
M.U.G.E.N. Archive, for... something. I don't really use it for much besides downloading characters.
Not really a social, but my Drive folder with all my M.U.G.E.N. stuff.
List of fighting games that I've played:
Street Fighter IV (all versions up until Super: AE, including 3D)
Street Fighter X Tekken (very briefly, no DLC)
Mortal Kombat (2011), and Mortal Kombat XL (hardly played 2011, no DLC)
Injustice 2 (no DLC)
Skullgirls Mobile
Dragon Ball FighterZ (no DLC)
Dead or Alive 4, 5, 6 and Dimensions (no DLC for any)
Soul Calibur IV and 6 (no DLC)
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (no DLC)

bestie what are your top 5 favorite fighting games? OF ALL TIME.
Okay this one was REALLY hard lol I had to really think about the games that continue to hold a special place in my heart for whatever reason. Also I couldn't put these in any order so yeah
• Soul Calibur 3 - not my first fighting game, but it was the first fighting game where I actually knew what I was doing. I mean I was still a kid so take that with a grain of salt lol but yeah my interest in fighting games really started here. It's too bad Soul Calibur has fallen off so much, but I'll always love the older ones
• Any Dead or Alive game that isn't 6 - okay sorry this is cheating lol, but I have a huge soft spot for DOA and couldn't choose an actual favorite. 6 isn't even bad or anything, just a bit disappointing compared to the others. But yeah I've always found the DOA mechanics fun and interesting and I think they're well put together fighting games that unfortunately never really get the credit they deserve because people always see it as just the Horny game and. Well yeah it's not really beating those allegations tbf. Also I would die for Kasumi
• Mortal Kombat 9 - yeah of course this broken mess of a game was gonna be here lol. This game really reignited my love for MK. For a while MK was my favorite fighting game franchise and this game is literally the reason why, I spent SO many hours in this game it's insane. I can't say it's my favorite franchise anymore but I still love it and I'll always have a special place for this game, it was just fun as fuck. I miss bullying my friends with Cyrax lmao
• Dragon Ball Fighterz - I hesitated to include this one but one look at my dresser reminded me why I couldn't not include it lol. Yeah not much to say this game is just an absolute blast and it introduced me to my wife Frieza and got me into DB in general which actually means it's done me more harm than good now that I think about it
• Marvel vs Capcom 3 - I mean. Come on lmao

Watched all the cutscenes and yep, I’m the soul. A little embarrassing because it’s supposed to be the player insert but nope, that’s me! I’m that!
Honestly it was great hanging out with Goku and the gang, it really started to feel like friends, maybe even family. Even with the whole situation, it felt like I was part of them naturally. I really miss you all!
And I’m really happy with seeing you all here! It’s great even if just in passing.

Some thoughts and details on my last Gamefly rental, Dragon Ball FighterZ(Switch version; no DLC).
Tumblr media
There's an original story mode in this instead of retreading the main Sagas like usual, split into 3 Arcs(that seem to be alternate timelines?). Beating all 3 Arcs will unlock Hard Mode for the first one, and I believe the rest get it once you finish the previous one in Hard Mode.
For this story, an unnamed Earthling Soul links with the Z-Fighters, a few villains who've been revived and/or the Androids after strange waves incapacitate them all as a huge wave of clones of many Z-Fighters and villains go on the attack and is somehow able to allow them to fight again. They're weakened, however, so you'll be raising your Link Ratio(i.e. levels gained from experience) with them to make them stronger.
Battles are done in any combination of 1 to 3 available fighters in Story Mode, and I think always 3v3 outside of it. The ones you aren't playing as can be called in for Assist Attacks or switched out with your current fighter.
Something I think unique to DB FighterZ is that, when one fighter is KO'd, instead of them tagging in normally, they'll fly in and arm clash with the winner of the last round, then both will jump to the starting positions before the player(s) gets control back.
Constantly fighting the clones over and over, as well as how the maps work(they're laid out like a game board, with different panels to move to, one at a time), reminds me of Budokai 2's story mode, which looked similar, and where later on, you had to repeatedly fight Majin versions of Frieza and Cell. At least there's more variety here, though it can get repetitive.

Here are the unlock conditions for Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta:
For use in Story Mode, they must reach level 40. The easiest way I found was to redo the second to last battle in the third Arc over and over and equip them with Skills that increase EXP.
For use outside Story Mode: You need to earn 300,000 Zeni for SSB Vegeta and 500,000 Zeni for SSB Goku. Alternatively, you need to beat the 'Extreme Gravity Spaceship Course' on Hard in Arcade Mode, and get A Rank(Vegeta)/beat 'Hyperbolic Time Chamber Course' on Hard(Goku). There are Skills that increase the Zeni you earn to make the grind a bit easier, though I don't know a good farming method.
After starting the game, and selecting if you want to play online or offline, you'll be put into a Hub where you can walk or fast travel with ZL to different parts of it for each Mode.
In Arcade Mode, you can fight a set of 3, 5 or 7 matches, with Hard Mode for each being unlocked after clearing on Normal. I've heard Hard Mode really lives up to it's name, reaching 'SNK Boss' levels at times, too.
There's a Shop in the Hub where you can spend Zeni earned from fights on Z-Capsules, either 1 or 10 at a time, which can give you, alternate character colors, various customization options for your Lobby character that walks around the Hub or your online Player Card. If you get a repeat from a Z-Capsule, you'll instead get Premium Coins. Using them, either 10 or 100, will guarantee that you get items from Z-Capsules that you don't have yet.
In the Story Mode menu, there's a Gallery that lets you view story scenes that you've found, and this includes 'Special Events', which can happen when specific characters enter a battle. They're shown here in silhouette, with enemies marked in red, until you see them, and some are specific to each Story Arc. I like these, they usually have some interesting or amusing conversations between the characters.
The Boot Camp/FighterZ Dojo Mode is full of gameplay tutorials, which also pop up often in the first Story Mode Arc on Normal(doing them there also gives you some extra Zeni).
During non-Story game modes, you can collect the Dragon Balls and make a wish by making large combos, 70+ hits needed for the last one. More details here.
By winning fights under specific conditions outside of Story Mode, you can trigger a Dramatic Finish, where iconic moments from the series, plus some new ones, can play out. Here are the conditions to initiate each Dramatic Finish.
Yamcha feels like he got thrown a bone in this game: he feels fun to play(and is the type of fighter I'm good at), and can even get a reversal of his infamous death in a Dramatic Finish against Nappa.
Krillin and Android 18 have some really nice moments in this, and I want to see more of that.
Like with GBF Versus, the graphic style and animations are very well done. I watched a video from Boundary Break that showed how it looks away from what the player can see, and how some shots were made to work look really silly. XD
Next game being sent is: Super Neptunia RPG.
