SOTD: M79 - Vampire Weekend
#17
Vampire Weekend is another one of those bands I knew about before. I think I found Vampire Weekend earlier in the school year...I think...
Anyway, I found them but I didn't really listen to many of their songs. Only "A-Punk", "Oxford Comma", and "Giving Up the Gun". And I only listened to them once. I've stumbled upon Vampire Weekend's Spotify profile since.
Now I kind of regret not listening to them more. I found them again last week and downloaded both their albums.聽I listened through both albums -聽Vampire Weekend and Contra -聽this weekend, and oh my goodness. Why didn't I listen to them more聽before?Vampire Weekend has almost no bad songs in it. Like, I honestly like every single song on that album. And same goes forContra. How does a band even do that to me?
So, because I like all of Vampire Weekend's songs, it was really hard for me to choose a song for today. Today, I chose "M79". I think what I'm going to do tomorrow is pick my favorite song from Contra. Because it was either that song or "M79" that would be today's SOTD.
Anyway, oh my goodness "M79".
Let me just start off with the only thing I don't like about this song. The ending. Like what. It just cuts off...in the middle of a phrase. I can't tell if that's supposed to be on purpose or not. I feel like it is. But who does that? What kind of person would be ok with ending a song in the middle of a phrase? And there isn't even a fade effect. It's just "BAM. IT'S DONE. ONTO NEXT SONG." It's way too in-your-face. Way too sudden. It caught me off guard the first time. It took me a couple seconds to comprehend what had just happened. Ok. End rant. On to everything else about "M79".
Alright, so the beginning. That harpsicord-ish-or-some-keyboard-ish-instrument-or-sound-effect-thing (aka idk-what-it-is-thing). I'll assume it was a keyboard. But that thing combined with the cello and then bass and聽drumset and then violins聽was like "eargasmmmm". ._. I really don't know why but my ear likes string instruments...like a lot. (which means i should probably find some classical music to listen to) I especially love the cello. Sometimes the violin gets a bit too obnoxious for me. But the cello is just perfect. The note range and the timbre and just everything about the cello. ._. I wanna learn how to play it some day... So, if a song somehow manages to mix cellos and violins and guitar into a pop-ish beat and makes it sound good, that song is probably going to be one I like. Because anyone that can mix stuff like that is a genius and really knows what to put together to make the best song.
So yeah. One, the instrumentals are like asdfghjkl; so good. Two, Ezra Koenig's voice makes this song all the better. His voice just fits with the song and the style. ._. I feel I say this to every band tho...I probably do say this for everyone. I've said this a lot. I like his kind of high voice and it's...Ezra Koenig-ness. orz I fail at explaining. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I just can't explain for my life.
Three, this is another upbeat and happy-ish song. Those songs always seem to be my favorite. Like I said before (i think), I usually don't like too ballad-y songs. I do like ballad songs though, but only to a certain extent. It's usually those happy and kind of bouyant-ish songs that become my favorites. And, since "M79" is one of those songs, this song is a good song that I like.
Oh, and I just found out Vampire Weekend is releasing their third album,Modern Vampires of the City, on May 6 in the UK and May 7 in the USA. I shall be waiting.
