humans always had such... spunk. for short-lived, delicate creatures that loved to send the world into imbalance with their wars and unnatural creations, they were bold and unabashed in their living. from a young age, aphelion had been charmed by it--charmed by their sense of freedom, how they expressed themselves, how they made the most of their limited time.

though sometimes, he wondered--why? when knowing you only had a blink of a lifetime upon this eons-old planet, why spend it on these particular things?

like this man. did he not know better, aphelion would have guessed his face was combined with the large camera in his hands. that in itself was unusual--most humans eagerly transferred to small cell phones the moment they could, opting for their photo function over more large, clunky devices.

was he a photographer? perhaps, but he felt it unlikely. not when he seemed to be trying to creep through foliage and take photos of unsuspecting strangers--though, maybe he knew them?--until his foot caught the gnarled root of one of the trees planted near the park's pathway.

resilient, oddly durable things that humans were, he likely did not need aphelion looming over him, checking in, but he found his feet guiding him there sooner than he could turn and pretend he hadn't seen. the people he had been photographing didn't notice--they were still walking on, seemingly in conversation.

offering an outstretched hand to help the stranger up, aphelion glanced over, trying to find his camera. did he fall on it when he tripped?
