We act shocked and call the horror at our border “unamerican”, but in truth ripping babies from mothers is quintessentially American. It’s been our modus operandi since colonization. The Indigenous who faced genocide at our hands wouldn’t call this unamerican. The millions of Africans enslaved here wouldn’t have considered this unamerican. Both national atrocities systematically, literally ripped babies from their mothers’ arms, yet we call what I.C.E. Is doing “unamerican”??? Genocide is American. Enslavement is American. The systematic dehumanization of non-whites is American. Ripping babies from their mothers’ arms is as American as apple pie. This shit will fester unchecked until we start teaching our children the true history and current reality of this “great” nation. We don’t learn from our crimes- we double down. Patriotism is evil. Nationalism is killing people. We have to wake up to the realities of this evil empire. America is not beautiful. It has never been great. It’s a bloody, heartless regime that’s yet to atone for the sins of the past, and thus continues terrorize children and families fleeing great danger and violence in their home countries. (Many of which are destabilized due to the direct actions of America) Face it and feel it. Imagine the pain. Imagine YOUR child screaming in fear, calling out to you as you watch helplessly, not knowing where she is being taken, what will happen to her, or if you’ll ever see her again.
