Reminder to self to figure out if poison (the purple stuff) has a source. My current headcanon is that the Lost Kingdom was once a tropical paradise but was overtaken by pollution, which caused the surrounding area to become filled with poison and the kingdom fell to ruin. The “kingdom that fell to ruin” part can still stick around, but it’s the pollution part that doesn’t make sense.

That exact same poison is found in multiple locations around the world (most notably in the Mushroom Kingdom itself), and none of those other locations could, from a lore perspective, be caused by pollution. So this begs the question of where the poison actually came from? Perhaps it is simply another type of habitat in this world that forms naturally? Or maybe something else other than pollution caused it to be there?

OKAY OKAY WAIT I FEEL LIKE A GENIUS HOLD UP

So, I have noted that the Dark Star’s goal is to envelop the entire world in darkness and the other Stars’ goal is to stop that from happening. I also headcanon that Shine Sprites (which are said to thrive only on Isle Delfino at this time) were at some point present in the Lost Kingdom but had to flee when the kingdom fell. I HAVE ALSO NOTED that one of the primary abilities of Dark Magic is poison. Are you seeing where this is going,,

What if the Dark Star creates poisoned areas of the world in which other Stars are unable to inhabit,, What if it initially tested this power on the ancient “Lost” Kingdom, choosing that location specifically because it held so many Shine Sprites and it wanted to get rid of them (to further its goal of spreading darkness),, And then once it realized poisoning the area worked, it started poisoning other parts of the world too,,
