Please talk critically with me about designs in Genshin Impact

I was surprised to see a survey about character aesthetics when I logged into genshin today. I like the surveys generally since I'm vain and just wanna shout my opinion into the void, but I went to art school™ so I liked having the opportunity to use those thousand dollar vocab words as well.

Anyways I generally like the designs in genshin but nothing is perfect to everyone. What did you guys respond with? Is there stuff you mentioned really liking/not liking?

My main beefs with RPG characters are

A. When they're monochrome af

And

2. When their outfit tips over reasonable aesthetic choice into outright impracticality

I have less to say about the latter point so I'm just gonna start there. Most of the genshin characters (in my opinion) and dressed within a reasonable amount of impracticality. Diona's 2010 Lady GaGa heels drive me absolutely bonkers, but most of the characters are fairly balanced in style.

Except Yanfei.

Yanfei is a ~ Lawyer ~ running around in a bikini and jester shoes. Girl wtf. That's my middle school "tryna look sexy + quirky" type of fit. That's Party City's "Jester Girl" in the clearance bin type of fit. Use that pyro vision and just burn it, please

I like monochrome designs in independent pieces like this :

But when you're designing an open world it just makes the characters seem kindof... Off

Venti, Zhongli, and any of the other archons would make sense being monochrome to me, but like, everyday people? Where's the strategy?? Oh you dress in all purple guess I better be able to counter electro.

I was really attracted to Tartaglia's design because it had felt like at that point he was the only character I'd encountered who wasn't dressed up to announce their element.

This hasn't been addressed in the canon, but I really like the idea of visions potentially causing some minor physical changes in the user. Like, we see visionless NPCs everywhere and they all have normal eye colors and hair colors but then vision users are running around with pink eyes and red hair. It just seems like a tactical oversight. When I was designing my OC Orsa I didn't want to make her wear nothing but green (dendro) and neutrals because people rarely do that -- but I wrote in her backstory that the event which gave her a vision also left her with total amnesia, and I like the idea that rediscovering her identity is made harder by the fact that gaining her vision also turned her hair green where it had previously been brown.

I wanna say characters like Kaeya and Lisa (who I still like, mind you) are forgivable in the sense that the player encounters them right away and they serve as a sort of tutorial on vision use

-- but then we encounter Keqing in the next chapter and once again we have an electro character who only wears purple!! Chongyun only wears light blue! Xingqui only wears dark blue?! And everyone wears their visions on their waists?? Gimme a sneaky bastard with brown hair and brown eyes who keeps his vision hidden in his jacket and tells everyone he doesn't have one please.

Sorry if I sound a bit too heated, I get passionate about design. Please lemme know if anyone else shares/disagrees with these thoughts. Ily ❤️

rating the genshin guys outfits, including unreleased characters. this is biased: 1. scaramouche im so so in love with whoever designed his outfit 2. chongyun 3. zhongli 4. kaeya 5. xiao < my current gender 6. male traveler. imo hes some kindof brown people just bc of the outfit 7. bennett 8. baizhu. tbh hed be higher if he wasnt literally wearing sweatpants 9. razor 10. venti 11. xingqiu 12. albedo. i do love him and he looks good but its boring 13. dainsleif tbh we havent seen him really and while im a fan of the slight goth look, its disappointing given that hes literally a king 14. childe he looks dumb it reminds me of sakuras boruto outfit 15. diluc. sorry he reminds me of taylor swift dont ask me why
