Ayrton Senna enjoying Carnaval in 1992
Carnaval is the most popular holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions, bringing people from all around the world. Rio, specifically, is one of the biggest epcenters of the holiday, and has many small "blocos" that go around neighborhoods playing music, dancing and partying as well as an organized parade that lasts around four days in the Sambodromo in the Marquês de Sapucaí.
This big parade showcases multiple schools of samba from the state of Rio in the fight to become that years champion. The last day of parades in Sapucaí is when the "Desfile das Campeãs" - Champions Parade - happens and the best samba school is announced. That was the event Ayrton Senna attended in 1992 for the first and last time.
That year Estácio de Sá was the school crowned champion and Ayrton was in a sector of the standings sponsored by Brahma, and gave a quick interview but made clear he didn't want to talk about F1, calling it "papo careta" a typical expression at that time to say (in a funny way) that something was a very boring subject!
Later, Reinaldo Bouzan - cinematographer and friend of Senna - was filming some interviews with his friends Carmen and Roberto Pereira when he found out Ayrton was nearby and had invited the three of them into the exclusive standings he was partying at.
The clip is a very fun watch when you know Carmen - who was asking the questions - is not a professional journalist and in fact a lawyer, and Roberto who was with the lights behind the camera is her HR specialist husband. Only the Reinaldo is a cameraman by profession, and even he did not scape Ayrton's playful banter and was called a cameraman"pé de araque". Calling anything is "de araque" is a jokey way of saying something is not credible or very good.
A little alignment of the stars happened that day, it was the first and only time Ayrton Senna went to Sapucaí and attended the Champions Parade and also the first and only time - at least until now - that Estácio de Sá was crowned Champion! Just a sweet thing to me honestly, he must have been their good luck charm.
