OPENING STORY
羽宮 一虎:おいマイキー!急に呼び出してなんだよ
Kazutora: Hey Mikey! What’s up with this sudden call?
佐野 万次郎:おせぇよ一虎~オレが呼んだら5分で来いよ
Mikey: You’re laaate Kazutora~ When I call you, you gotta show up in five minutes.
羽宮 一虎:無茶言うなよー
Kazutora: Don’t be ridiculous.
河田 ナホヤ:一虎も来たしこれで全員か?
Smiley: Since Kazutora is here, is this everyone?
羽宮 一虎:おれ?そうなん?珍しいメンツだな…
Kazutora: Eh? Wait, what? This is a weird group…
羽宮 一虎:ドラケンとか他のヤツらは?
Kazutora: What ‘bout Draken and the others?
佐野 万次郎:....今回はオマエらにしか頼めねぇことなんだ
Mikey: I can only count on you guys this time…
武藤 泰宏:なんだどうした
Muto: What’s wrong?
河田 ソウヤ:オレら力になるよ!
Angry: We can help!
佐野 万次郎:これなんだけど....

Kazutora: So what’s the deal with this?
佐野 万次郎:これでこの間ケンチンたちにボコボコにされたんだよ…!
Mikey: The other day Kenchin and the crew totally beat me to a pulp…!
羽宮 一虎:…は?
Kazutora: …Huh?
佐野 万次郎:次戦う時にぜってぇ全員ボコボコにしてやりてぇ
Mikey: So next time we fight, I gotta be the one to take them down.

Hey! Sorry for the sudden question. I've been following for a while and noticed you've done some Fate translations in the past -- to which I figured I'd ask: How'd you go about learning Japanese? I've got a BA degree in it but feel like my language skills still need improvement in order to better do things like translations, so in the event you're self-taught and have tips on how to improve, it would be very appreciated!
And as a fellow OC-lover, it's lovely seeing people be enthusiastic about their creations! Sometimes I'm surprised about the amount of detail people put in their characters, but then I remember my 15+ page documents for some of my characters, so you know. I am guilty too.
Regardless, thanks for your time!
Sorry about the delay, I've been pretty busy preparing for the holidays x.x
In any case, let me see........... To preface, take any and all of this advice because you do have more formal Japanese training than me since you have a degree in it! I'm half self-taught, and half have a formal education from both high school and university
(under a cut bc long)
I suppose my foremost advice for translating is just...... to do it. I know that sounds, like, wild, because you feel like you can't at the level you're currently at, but you won't get practice if you don't try, right? And translating is a different beast than just... understanding, you know? Even people who can read a book fluently and enjoy it in another language as easily as they would their own native language may struggle just as much as an amateur translator when trying to translate it because it's a different skillset - namely, to translate something, you also need proficiency in the language you're translating to, and oftentimes creative writing skills to make something flow or to interpret something correctly. And writing skills have to be learned through practice!
I'll say this - when I started translating I was very very very literal and I was scared to do anything else because I wasn't looking to become a good, professional translator; I was simply looking to share the joy or what I was reading with people who might be interested but wouldn't normally understand (bc ofc it's ridiculous to assume everyone has the time/energy/resources to pick up an entire language). It might also have to do with when you grew up on the internet/what circles you were in because I grew up around the burgeoning vocaloid community and it was like...... back in the mid-2000s, it was amazing to get any translations or summaries of anything at all no matter how literal or stilted they were (and sometimes now I go back to things I liked from then and am like "???? hm, should that have been translated like that....?"). That is to say, I started out Not Very Good and some of my old stuff makes me cringe now. But there are some things that did improve my work, so if it'll help........
Don't stop translating. Even if you don't post it. Or, if you need a break from translating, at the very least don't stop reading/listening to stuff in JPN. I got super burned out last year around this time and haven't really translated anything since - and it's SO hard to get back into it even though I like translating because there's so much rust to shake off.
Look at a multitude of translations, both official and fantranslations, and of course, compare to the original JPN. Even by reading different translations, you'll discover that you like various parts of different translations best, you know? You might find interesting ways to translate things that you never would've thought of, and you'll start to realize what you like or dislike in translations (for example - I get localizing idioms sometimes, but because a lot of idioms or popular phrases sound very cheesy/stilted in English it can sometimes give a translation a kind of old or like..... "mother goose" type of feeling? And there are a lot of idioms from other languages that make sense literally in English because of the imagery used)
So, this one might be a little overwhelming, but....... Open commissions. Or even just a tip jar! Of course, only if you feel comfortable in doing so!!!! But. I found that a big factor to my improvement was the incentive of....... money. It sounds shallow but it can be really disheartening to toil for hours and hours over something and in the end it isn't even guaranteed that anyone will see or care, and you can't even like, get a coffee or something for yourself. Getting tips from people, and then opening commissions gave me incentive to go the extra mile in refining my translations because they were for a paying customer who trusted me, you know?
As I've said before, translations aren't just reading and understanding. You have to have writing skills, but many times you have to also have to have research skills. For example, in the Amadeus vs. Phantom manga I translated for Lance, it makes reference to the opera, "Bluebeard's Castle." I could've not looked into what that was to fill the gaps in my knowledge (since I hadn't heard of it), but in doing so I wouldn't have understood the Themes of what I was translating. Instead, I ended up not only reading the wikipedia plot summary, but different interpretations of the opera - and then I went as far as to watch a production of the opera itself (there was a free translated version on youtube!). And that seems like a lot of work (and maybe I didn't need to go as far as watching the entire opera), but it colored my understanding of the story being told, and thus my translation. In having knowledge of what lay beyond the 7th door in Bluebeard's Castle, I was able to understand what was important to Phantom's narrative and struggle in the story, and through my own understanding, I could convey that to my readers. And Fate especially has a lot of that kind of stuff! If a translation throws something at you as a reference, it might be worth looking into to understand better (and even if it's not immediately relevant, not looking into it can bite you on the ass later)
Have an open heart. This might be the hardest one to do to be honest, but........... I try to be unbiased as possible when translating. Even if I'm translating a character I don't particularly like, or the storyline isn't really going where I wanted it to, I never have the feeling like "yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. this person/story sucks so who cares what they're talking about." I always try to put in my best effort in understanding motivations and characters and themes, because otherwise it can lead to the translation itself doing a character a disservice if no love or care was given from the beginning - and thus even people who might've liked x/y/z instead come away not liking it or thinking it dull. which leads me to.....
Always remember that you are essentially adapting someone else's work. Are you being fair to them? Are you treating their work with respect? Translators hold a lot of power over audience perception; a bad translation - in this case not meaning a translation that leans very literal (bc ppl can see that it's literal and not being interpreted) but a bad faith, biased, or even simply apathetic translation - can wreck an audience's opinion of something. So always remind yourself that it is not just your own work you are representing. You don't have to be in love with everything you translate, but if you begin looking at what you're translating with hostility or aggression it might be good to just. step away.
7. Don't burn yourself out! Unfortunately I have no tips for avoiding this because I myself burned out and I still have not recovered. But burnout is the worst because you can distance yourself from translating and become rusty (as I did) or even become jaded/apathetic to whatever you're working on (so even when/if you do come back especially if you have an obligation to finish x/y/z you may have an antagonistic relationship with the material which, ofc, leads to bad/unhealthy translation practices and not respecting the source material)
I hooooooooope this was somewhat helpful? Sorry it got so long! I tried to focus mostly on things that would be most beneficial to the actual act of translating rather than how to study on your own since it seemed kind of patronizing to preach stuff at you that might not be helpful when you're more educated than me (but feel free to ask again if that's actually what you wanted? I might have asks lying around that deal with that, actually......)

Hey girlie I’m once again back for advice. I’m trying to gauge what is an appropriate amount of interaction with my guy and it’s like so hard. I don’t want to annoy him or be overbearing. Cause like he’s obviously got a job and shit to do and a life outside of seeing me and talking to me. And considering we’ve only just started seeing each other I don’t want to be overly clingy. But also seeing as this is my first time I guess “dating” (idk what you would call it we haven’t called it anything yet) I’m like wow this is all so new and exciting and I’m feeling so small and needy :(. I feel so pathetic just waiting around for it to be the weekend again so I can see him again. How do you deal with feeling lonely or needy when you can’t see B? I just don’t know if I feel comfortable saying to him that I miss him or I miss kissing him or something. - age gap crush anon ❤️
Hey I'm sorry my replies have been a wee bit slow I've had work and been like overwhelmed by life haha. Also B left mine yesterday morning and I just got so depressed because (convenient for this ask) I missed him haha.
I think like, message back and forth and don't feel too weird about the occasional double message. And again just remember that all these new love giddy feelings you're getting, he's getting them too. Like men do experience the same dopamine rush that we do, they just don't express it the same way we do. Know that if you're missing him he's probably missing you too.
Something I noticed with B is that he didn't start to express his feelings of missing me until I admitted that I missed him and didn't like not getting to see him.
And like you can totally make a joke of it too, I make self deprecating "lol I'm sorry I'm so needy" jokes all the time haha.
Idk though, I wouldn't worry too much about coming across as overbearing or whatever, I think as well like, adults don't do the whole "I have to leave it an hour before I reply to them or they will think I'm too keen" thing, they just reply to eachother when they have time idk. Like I message B way more than he messages me, and I'll double and sometimes triple message all the time because I know he's not ignoring me, he's just been busy.
I don't feel like this is actually solid easy to follow advice so sorry about that, I kinda have to go off vibes when I'm sending him messages, and sometimes he will take like 24 hours to two days to reply to me, but like when he does I can tell he obvs doesn't think I'm being too needy or too much.
And omg unfortunately in terms of coping with missing him I don't even know, you may have noticed from my tumblr posts but when I don't get to see B for a few days I spiral hahaha.
No idk, I try to just motivate myself with focusing on when I'll next see him, or just finding tasks that I need to do to distract myself like writing. I watch pride and prejudice and lost in translation a lot bc they are my comfort films and they give me like that childish cuddly feeling.
Also me and B phone in the week between seeing eachother.
But for real, just distractions. Just work out what's best going to usefully occupy your mind and try to force yourself to be distracted. But also, like lean into the missing him and yearning becayse it's part of the joy of that beginning stsge tbh. Like let your mind wander and daydream about him, and remember the cute things he's said to you/done for you, like reimagine all the time u have spent together so far.
That's what I do, especially when I'm like, struggling to sleep without B.
Anyway I hope this helps and definitely just remember he's missing u too, he isn't going to think you're insane for missing him ❤️❤️
