Spin
“Again”
Spin
“Again
Spin
“Again”
You hit the ice just as aggressively as you did the time before that. You're finding it hard to breathe and everything aches.
“Again Lapin!”
You pump your legs, moving them fast and hard. You're mid-jump when you hear the shrieking of the arena buzzer. Thrown off, your footing is off and you fall to your knees.
You hear your coach scoff, moving to get off the ice. You get up, wincing at the sting in your knees, that’ll be a nasty bruise.
When you walk off the ice, Coach hands you your blade covers. You mentally prepare yourself for the lecture you’ll receive when you return to the locker room.
You feel a tight grip on your arm. Okay, looks like you’ll get your lecture right here.
“Lapin, If you get distracted by a buzzer, what makes you think you’ll be fine in an arena full of people? Have you learned nothing from your last performance?”
She asks you questions but doesn’t give you time to respond, she immediately cuts in. “And your jumps, how is it that you haven’t managed to master your jumps? You are well past the age to be scared of falling. Your hesitation will cost you this title.”
Silence falls over the both of you, Coach has her hands on her sides and just stares. You know what she's doing. She’s thinking of how you’ll be punished for this oh-so-horrible performance today.
“Tomorrow you will march yourself to the management office and ask for an extended time.”
Your eyes go wide, “Coach, they’ll never give me more time. And what about my professors? They’re already at their wits end with me being gone all the time.”
Coach’s eyes sharpen, “I’m sorry, have your priorities changed? Am I wasting your time Lapin? Cause if that’s the case then say so, and may we be free of this doomed partnership.”
You cower under her stare, “No, no of course not Coach, I’ll talk to management tomorrow and see what deal I can work up with my professors.”
Pleased with the conversation going her way, Coach smiles. “Good, I’ll see you soon.”
With that, she saunters off, reaching for her phone to call god knows who.
When you’re sure she’s out of eyesight you slump down onto the bench next to you. You close your eyes and take a minute to finally catch your breath. You bring your hand to your chest, hoping to alleviate some of the tightness and discomfort.
The bench shakes and you hear something hit the ground with a thud. You open one eye and close it again when you see who it is who’s disturbed your peace.
“How oh how will you ever convince management to give you any more practice time?”
You sigh, hoping that if you ignore the nuisance next to you, he’ll get the hint and leave you alone.
“They won’t even give the team extra time, let alone one person.”
You open your eyes and turn to look at the boy sitting next to you. “I can be very persuasive.”
James, who’s lacing up his skates, mumbles a quiet “Don’t I know it.”
You stand up and gather your things. “Who Knows James, win some games and maybe you’ll get the extra time you need.”
James pauses his movement, looking up at you with a deadly glare.
It’s a sore subject and you know it. After Peter Pettigrew, one of the university's star players decided to transfer, James and the rest of the team have been dethroned. They’ve known no peace since then and are grappling with everything to win this season.
James turns back to his laces. “Hey and maybe if you learn to stop being so skittish on the ice, you’ll land that jump for once Lapin.”
This is why you’ll never feel bad for being so hostile toward James. He’s a wolf in sheep's clothing and you lose your mind every day knowing that everybody has fallen for his golden boy act.
You throw your bag over your shoulder, swatting at the back of James' head on your way out of the arena.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re pacing back and forth in front of the management office. You’ve gone over every possible excuse that could convince them to give you more time. You will convince them, or Coach will have your head on a platter. You’ll butter up the sweet old lady who works the front desk, you’ll dazzle her, and she’ll sign whatever she needs to.
With one final pep talk, you walk into the office and freeze at the door.
Shit.
It’s not the sweet old lady.
Sitting at the front desk is Remus Lupin. ‘This is fine’ you try to convince yourself.
You saunter up to the desk “Good morning Remus, you look fantastic today, do anything different with your hair?”
Remus puts his book down, looking up with a sweet smile, “No, did the same thing I always do. How can I help you?”
You lean onto the counter and start messing with the pen jar. “You, my love, can sign off on my extra ice time.” you choose not to make eye contact, continuing to swivel the pens around the jar.
Remus sighs, dragging your name out, “You know I can’t approve any more time for you, the school won’t allow it.”
You stomp your foot out of habit, “ But Remus, I got all my professors to give me as many extensions as I need, really all I need is for you to say yes.”
Remus, always bursting your bubble, “It’s not about class love, It’s about your health. You know how the system works.”
You groan and bring your head down onto the counter. You knew this would be your biggest obstacle. All athletes have to adhere to certain rules. The university claims that it’s to protect the athlete's health but everyone knows it's so they don’t get backlash for overworking their student-athletes. You're allotted a certain amount of hours but anything over that has to be flagged and reported.
“Listen,” Your head shoots up, “I can maybe convince them to a lot you a bit more time, but you’ve got to go to your physical therapy sessions. Doc has to report when you don’t show you know.”
“Okay yes, fine, I pinky promise that I will see Doc, and stretch and stay off the ice for 30 minutes after eating, and-”
Remus cuts you off with a laugh, “Okay, okay I get it. I’ll talk to the board and see what I can do.”
You squeal, reaching over the counter to smack a kiss on Remus’s forehead. “You are a lifesaver Remus Lupin.”
Remus just shakes his head, “Yeah yeah, whatever, get out of here.”
You happily skip out of the office, so happy, that not even running into James Potter in his gear could upset you.
You offer a simple “James” and go to walk past him.
“Woah, what's got you all happy?”
You give him a sly smile, “Oh nothing, I’m just having a lovely morning.”
James furrows his brows at you, “Okayyy. Was Rem in the office?”
You nod at him, “Yes, my sweet, beautiful, lovely Remus is in there. How he’s friends with the lot of you, I’ll never understand.”
James is insulted but is weirded out more than anything.
Not caring to interact any further you wave goodbye.
James, still confused, continues into the office.
You don’t get far down the before James is yelling your name down the hallway. You roll your eyes, continuing on your way. You hear thumping and there’s a yank on your wrist.
You yelp out of surprise. James without a word is dragging you back towards the office. You both enter and Remus is shaking his head.
You rip your wrist out of James' grip, “I’d like that back thank you.”
You smile at Remus, “Hi love, so good to see you again.”
“Likewise.”
James snaps his fingers, “Quit it you two, Remus just told me you’re getting more time on the ice.”
“Why yes I am. I told you James, do better at your sport and good things come your way.”
“Guys please don’t start. I don’t want to have to kick you out again,” Remus says.
James disregards your insult, “You can’t get more time, you’re already maxed out on hours, they’ll never approve it.”
You shake your head in faux symphony “Oh James, I told you I was very persuasive.”
This seems to bring his attention back to his friend. “You” he points a finger aggressively toward Remus’s direction, “How could you say yes? You're the iron wall, no one shakes you down.”
Remus gives a weak shrug, “Okay, I wasn’t shaken down, we made a deal”
James rolls his eyes, “Oh yeah, and what was that?”
“She’ll see Doc, every appointment, she has to go.”
James looks confused. “How is that a deal? It's protocol.”
“Wellll” Remus drags.
The look on James’ face darkens. His attention is on you now. “You don’t see the Doc?”
You try not to be intimidated by his glare. “I just don’t see the point of seeing him after every practice. I mean come on, my body is my instrument, of course, I know how to take care of it.”
Whatever lightness was in the air, is gone now. James is genuinely upset and you can’t wrap your head around why.
“Are you kidding me, so what, you’ve just been skipping out on all your appointments?”
All you can do is shrug. Remus, who can sense the shift in the atmosphere, tries to intervene. “Look, I don’t even know if it’s a guarantee, I still have to ask the board.”
Your heart drops. “No. I need the time. You said you’d get me the time.”
Remus, who has unfortunately been caught in both James and your fury, doesn't know how to turn this conversation around.
“And what about your work, do you even go to class anymore?”
“I’m doing great in all my classes.”
“That doesn't answer whether you're going.”
“What does it matter? Virtual or not, It’s only until after the competition.”
James takes his glasses off and rubs at his forehead like he’s trying to ward off an oncoming headache. “So, just like that, you get the time, extensions on school work, and a pass from all the appointments you missed with Doc.”
You sigh, “I don’t get it James, are you jealous, is that what it is?”
This strikes a nerve in James. “You think that's what this is about?”
“Well” you throw your hands up, “what else could be?”
James puts his glasses back on and steps up to you, “You know what, if you want to overwork yourself and fuck up any chance you get at the actual competition, go ahead, seems like everyone is right behind you.” with that, James storms out the office.
Remus walks out from behind the desk and gives a light squeeze to your shoulder, “I don’t understand why you two work each other up so much.”
“He’s wrong,” you say quietly. Remus listens. “I’m better than I’ve ever been. I need this Remus, I need to win this. I need to show everyone that I can do it.”
Remus, with a sad look in his eyes, pulls you in for a hug. “Everyone knows you can, you’re amazing.”
You sigh and pull away. “It doesn’t matter how good I am, all everyone sees now is the girl who messed up last year. All my hard work was reduced to one stupid mistake. I have to get it right this time.”
Remus just sighs, he’s seen this version of you before, and he doesn’t like where it’s going.
He grabs you by the shoulders, “Promise that you’ll go to Doc.”
“Promise that you’ll get me my time.”
He sticks out his pinky, encouraging you to lock yours with his. You do.
“Thank Rem”
“Don’t make me regret love.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To everyone's surprise, the board does accept your request for additional time. You're ecstatic. Coach won’t show it but you know she’s semi-impressed.
With the new time, the ending of your practice marked the beginning of the kid's ice class. Every time you did any sort of jump or spin you could hear a dozen little aws and wows.
You felt fantastic, Coach was in a decent mood, and practice was long but the scary women had minimal feedback. For the first time in a long time, you felt on top of the world.
“Okay, that’s enough for today.”
You walk off the ice, putting your guards on. Coach gives you final pointers and is out of the building before you can say bye.
You sat on the bench, undoing the laces of your skates when a group of the girls from before comes up to you. They flutter around you, asking all sorts of questions and giving endless praises. You’d be lying if you said that you didn’t feel your heart swell with pride and joy.
You're talking about costumes when you hear your name being called. Standing towards the entryway are Doc and James.
You knew this day was going to well, you had forgotten that today was your scheduled appointment with Doc. As for James, every time you see him your day is ruined. The two of you hadn’t spoken since the whole incident in the office. Remus had tried to get the both of you to make amends but neither of you had the intention of doing so.
You put your slipper on and make your way over to pair.
“Hey remember me? Long time no see.” You know Doc is trying to be silly but your heart beating faster at the mere thought of having to get checked up.
The bespectacled figure clears his throat. “Haven't you heard Doc, our ice princess got more ice time so she's been pretty busy.”
You cross your arms. Reaching a hand to rest on your sternum, feeling a slight tug at every breath you take.
Doc disregards James petty comment, immediately picking up on your discomfort. “You okay?”
James looks puzzled, glancing back and forth between the two of you, looking for whatever he missed.
You shrug. “Yeah, it's just, well..you know.” Doc just nods.
“Know what?” James blurts out. From the look on his face, you can tell that he didn't mean to say that out loud.
You frown, “It’s nothing.”
“It’s clearly something.”
“Okay, well it’s none of your business is it.”
“OKAY,” Doc yells, cutting both of you off. “James I’ll do what we talk about, now move along.”
James lingers for a bit before he finally walks off.
“Now you” Doc starts, “Shall come with me.”
You know that there isn’t any way to avoid this and follow right behind him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doc makes small talk throughout your checkup. You give replies, trying your best not to come off like you don’t want to be there.
You’re in the middle of doing a stretch when Doc says “So, are we going to talk about the elephant in the room?”
You lay on your back and bring a knee up to your chest, staring up at the ceiling. “Do we have to?”
Doc hums, “I think we should.”
You bring your leg down and lift the other to your chest “Okay, well then I guess.”
Doc stands at your side and offers a hand to bring you up from the ground. You sit on the ground and Doc sits in front of you. “I need you to know that what I did, was not only part of my job as your doctor but as someone who cares deeply for you lot.”
You fidget with your fingers as Doc continues. “And I had to report the appointments that you were missing. I know you guys like to joke around with me but I am a healthcare provider before anything else and you can loathe me all you want but know my actions are never meant to harm you.”
Ugh, you feel like such an asshole now. “I don’t hate you Doc, I know you're just doing your job. I think-” you pause, trying to gather your thoughts, “I think in my head If I didn’t do my checkups, there wouldn’t be anyone to tell me that something could potentially be wrong.”
Doc nods, and you continue “I should’ve listened to you back then, with or without the jump I would've lost anyway.” You say with a sad smile. “This time has to be different, I have to land that jump, I have to win this one.”
Doc gives you an odd look. “I’ll be watching you like a hawk, you need to take care of yourself. I won’t watch you hurt yourself for this again, will you hate me then?”
You feel your body stiffen, you need this, so you think you might.
“I mean it when I say this one is mine this year.” you have never been more serious in your life.
“Oh trust me, I believe you.”
It doesn’t have to be said, but you think that you and Doc might be a bit further apart than before.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re counting down the weeks. The competition is getting closer with each day that passes. You’ve spent more time at the arena over the past couple of weeks than you have in your dorm.
Practice isn’t until later today, but you ambushed Remus when he was walking into the rink this morning.
Now here you are, skating freely in the dimly lit rink. Remus gets horrible migraines and chooses to leave the lights off for as long as he can.
You glide across the rink, twisting and turning whenever you please. Some time has passed when you come to a stop. All you can hear is the sound of your labored breath. You do your breathing techniques, trying your best to regulate your heartbeat.
Your nerves spike back up when you see James skating towards you and feel speed.
He halts right in front of you. “Are you okay?”
All you can do is nod, not being able to form words quite yet. James doesn’t say anything else for a while. He watches and waits as you catch your breath.
When you seem to have calmed down he jumps to question you. “What on earth was that?”
You shrug, “I just got a bit winded I guess.” He blinks at you, “That's not the first time it happened though.”
James, always so annoyingly inquisitive.
“I’m fine James, where the hell did you come from anyway? The rink isn’t open yet.”
You both kick into a slow skate around the rink. “That's rich, considering you’re here too. Also, you forget that Remus is one of my best friends.”
“How could I forget, you remind me every time I interact with him.”
“Well, that's because I can’t seem to understand what hold you’ve got over him. He folds instantly when it comes to you. You know I had to beg him for 20 minutes to let me in.”
You give a triumphant smile, “Remus and I have a bond that exceeds any and all relationship types, I wouldn’t expect you to understand.”
James scowls, ‘Stop talking about your special bond with Remus.”
“Jealous?”
“No!” James responded a bit too quickly. “More like deeply disturbed.”
“Not as disturbing as you and Sirius,” you say, skating a bit faster to get ahead of him.
“Hey! Don’t bring Sirius into this.”
You tsk, “So quick to defend his honor. Tell him I’m still waiting on our date by the way.”
“Oh please, Sirius goes on dates with anything that moves so don’t hold your breath.” Whatever honor and respect James had for his best friend earlier is out the window.
You hum, not offering him a real response. James, changing the subject, “Was that a routine earlier?”
“A routine with no music?” you ask sarcastically.
James rolls his eyes, “I'm just asking because it looked familiar.”
Familiar? Why would it look familiar?
“Spend your days off watching figure skating routines?” you say as you skate backward in front of him.
He shakes his head, “No, just yours.” he doubles down quickly, “Well cause, we skate at the same rink and all that.”
It’s too late, what he’s said has already gone to your head. You bring a hand to your heart mockingly, “The James Potter, Hockey legend, watches my routines. What an honor.”
James makes a face at you, “Oh whatever, forget I said anything.”
You continue “I can’t believe I am skating with James Potter.” you say as you skate around him.
James can’t help but laugh. “Okay quit it you’re gonna make me dizzy. God knows how you spin the way you do without throwing up.”
You continue at his side. “Years and years of practice.”
“So, the routine, what's it from?”
You let out a long sigh, “It was bits and pieces from my finals routine last year.”
James says a quiet ‘oh’
“Mhm” is all you can offer back.
“I was there, you know?” James fidgets with his glasses. “Well, I mean, me and the whole team—half of the university, really.”
This shocks you. You knew a lot of peers and locals from your university town showed overwhelming support, but for some reason, knowing James was there makes you…happy?
“Well, you picked the worst one to turn up to.” You try to make a light-hearted joke, but it doesn’t work.
James comes to a stop on the ice. You stop with him. “You really scared everyone.”
You scoff, “More like disappointed everyone.”
“No” James replies sharply, “I can assure you that no one in that arena was disappointed and you’ve got to stop thinking that.”
You feel an argument brewing. “And what about you James? What did you feel? Please share with the gallery.”
“I-”  he pauses for a second. “I was scared too, and then I was angry.”
“Angry?”
He nods, “Angry. I was angry at you. I was angry that you’d attempt to do something so-”
He cuts himself off, trying to restrain himself.
“Something so what James? Go on say it” You egg him on.
He yanks his glasses off his face, a habit he has when he’s frustrated. “Fine! Something so stupid. I couldn’t, for the life of me wrap my head around why you would purposely do something so stupid.” James doesn’t stop there. “I couldn’t understand why you would disregard Doc's orders. I was angry that you had such little regard for yourself and your body.” James throws his hands up,” and all for what?”
You clench your fist tight at your side. You feel the anger flare up inside you. “All for what?” you laugh bitterly. “Is that how you see what I do?”
James doesn’t respond. His silence only angers you more. “I did what I thought was necessary okay? I worked too hard all last year to just give it up. I made a mistake, I understand that, and I have spent every moment since then trying to make it up.”
You inch closer towards James, “Do you know how humiliating it is to have all my hard work be reduced down to one single mistake? I am perfect my whole career but the second I have one slip-up I'm stripped of all my wins, all my medals. Everything I’ve worked for, completely disregarded.”
James stares at you with wide eyes. “Is this what this is about? About ruining your perfect reign? Do you know how insane that sounds?”
You groan, “I could hold my tongue hearing this from anyone else, but you of all people James, Seriously? You are such a hypocrite.”
James glares at you. “And what exactly are you alluding to?”
“You,” you say, shoving a finger in his chest, “are a hypocrite. You think I don’t see what you’ve been doing. Ever since Pete left you have been overcompensating, trying to fill a role all by yourself. The late night and early morning practices. Taking on extra responsibility on the ice. Spreading yourself thin to make it to nationals.
“That’s different.”
You laugh “How on earth is different James?” you can't believe this guy.
“It’s different because It’s temporary until we find someone else. It’s different because I take care of myself. It’s different because it’s a whole team of us that care about each other. Yeah, I'm stepping up right now but I can always step back and rely on the guys if I need to. You, however, have..well you just don’t..” he sighs, “you’re alone.”
You back up from him, “You’re unbelievable.” you start skating to exit the rink. You hear James call after you. “Wait, I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Whatever James, just leave me alone.”
“Would you just let me explain?” he desperately calls out. You swivel around the ice quickly, turning to face him. You have a snarky remark to give but it's out the window when James fully runs into you. Before both of you can catch yourselves, you both fall onto the ice.
You yelp out in pain when James falls right onto your foot. He’s off of you quickly. “Holy shit are you okay?”
You don’t answer, attempting to stand up. When you put pressure on your right foot, a sharp pain shoots through your ankle. James must see the pain in your face, “I'm so sorry I didn’t think you were going to stop. Let me help you back.”
You shake him off, “No it’s fine, I’m fine.” you go to kick off the ice and the pain brings you to your knees. James reaches for you but you push his hands away.
No no no, this can’t be happening. You feel your heart start to pick up. You can barely hear James over the ringing in your ear. You stand up one more time, pushing off with your left leg this time. You make it somewhere but when you push off your right leg out of habit you double over in pain.
You hear James grimace from behind you. “Alright, that's enough.” James wraps your arm over his shoulder and takes most of your weight. You can’t deny him, having no other way to get off the ice. He glides the both of you to the exit. The second your feet reach the matted floors you push away from him and limp to the nearest bench. You're pulling and tugging at your laces aggressively. When your skate is loose enough you yank your foot out, crying out in pain. You roll your sock down both you and James gasp. You throw the skate that’s in your hand.
You bring your hands to your eyes, feeling that annoying sting. “Fuck!” This is not happening. You did not just ruin your chances for this year because of one little accident.
“I have to get Remus.” you grip James' wrist stopping him in his tracks. “Absolutely not!”
James tries to pull his wrist from you but you bring your other hand to grab at it. “Don’t say anything, please. I promise I’m fine.” James looks at you bewildered, “Are you insane? Your ankle is purple.”
“I bruise easily. I promise it's fine.”
“Walk on it.”
What. “What?”
James shrugs, “Walk on it. Walk from here to those bleachers.”
You go stand up, his eyes never leaving you. You take your first step and feel the same sharp pain you flinch but take your next step. You take step after step, pushing through the blinding pain. You make it to the bleachers and turn to face James. “See, it’s fine.”
James stares at you in disbelief. He walks up to you “You are unbelievable.” He grits out.
James leaves without saying anything else. Leaving you in the dark arena.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s been three days. You managed to convince Coach to give you time off, telling her that you had some projects to catch up on. Pleased with your recent performance, she reluctantly granted you some free time. No practice meant no Doc visits. Three days and radio silence from James. You were so sure that he would've said something to someone by now but you aren't called in for any meeting or evaluations.
Three days later and your ankle is still purple and throbbing. You’ve taken way too many painkillers for it to be safe but it’s your first day back and you have to act like you feel fine.
You walk into the building. You put on a smile and are prepared to give the best performance of your lifetime. Coach is already standing by the ice. You go towards the locker rooms but you stop when she yells your name.
She looks annoyed when you walk up to her. “Hey Coach”
She puts her phone down. “Look, they are cutting into your time today because they have to get the ice ready for the game tonight. I’m going to need you to do a quick warm-up and get right into running the routine. Jumps and all.”
You nod, “Yes ma’am.”
You put your bag down on the bench and start getting ready. You’re lacing up your skates when you hear a chorus of laughter. You lift your head to see James, Remus, and Sirius all chit-chatting while exiting the office hallway. Sirius catches your eye and you’re too slow to look away. He’s caught you.
“Lapin!”
Oh god.
You hear them make their way over.
“Where have you been? We haven’t seen you in ages.”
You yank tightly at your laces and wrap them around your ankle. “Oh don’t exaggerate. It was only three days.”
Sirius scoffs, slouching down onto the bench next to you. “Yeah, that’s forever for you. I feel like lately you’ve been here every day.” you roll your eyes at him.
“I had schoolwork to catch up on.”
Remus hums, “Look at you. Working hard.”
You lean back on the bench. “What can I say? Anyway, I’m back. Try not to stare too hard Sirius.”
Sirius' shoulder bumps you. “Hey, what about Remus?”
You stand up, “You my darling.” pointing a finger at Remus. “Can stare as long and hard as you’d like to.”
There is a slight tinge of pink on Remus’s face but he laughs it off. “Quit you two.”
Your attention turns to James clearing his throat. This whole time he hadn’t said anything, just staring at you, analyzing your every move.
The two of you stare at each other, tension thick in the air. He drags his eyes slowly down your body. Any other person would think he has no shame but you know it’s nothing like that. You know exactly what he’s looking for. James' eyes linger on your ankle, mostly hidden by your skates.
James tilts his head, “Hmm”
Sirius and Remus, having no idea what's going on, simply stand there.
“Hmm? That’s all you're gonna say?”
Jamea shrugs. “What else is there to say? Everythings fine.”
For the past three days you’ve done nothing but worry about James snitching on you. It’s brought you nothing but stress and anxiety. Why hasn’t he said anything?
You open your mouth to say something. “Yeah sure everythi-”
“Lapin! On the ice. Now!”
James continues staring at you. If he thinks you’re going to crack, he’s going to be waiting for the rest of the day.
You walk away with as much ease and poise as you can.
The pain in your foot isn’t gone. You’ve got a purple bump to prove it but you’ve taken enough pain meds to hold off some of the pain for now. You skate around the ice, warming up. Every time you kick off you feel the twinging pain but do your best to ignore it. Coach doesn’t let you warm up for long.
“Lapin, run the routine.”
You’re heart drops, you didn’t think she’d get straight into it but she must want to take advantage of the time you had on the ice.
You take a deep breath, already feeling the normal burning sensation in your lungs. You get into position. You steady yourself into your starting pose. You lock eyes with James. They’re all leaning onto barriers. Neither of you breaks eye contact. Finally, you hear the starting notes of your music and begin. You kick off beautifully, moving across the rink in a matter of seconds. You glide elegantly across the ice. The music begins to swell, the first jump is coming up. You breathe in, brace yourself, and jump. You spin, almost landing perfectly. There is a bit of wobble but nothing you can't make up in the next couple of jumps. You continue your program. You jump again. Spinning and landing. This one is perfect, no wobble. You keep moving, swelling with pride. You can’t see anyone but the lack of yelling lets you know that Coach is somewhat satisfied with the jumps. You push on, beginning to feel the pain in your foot. You ignore it as best you can. It’s when you're landing your third jump that the pain shoots up through your ankle. It leaves you breathless for a second but you compose yourself. You skate, you skate and skate and skate until you hear yelling over the music.
“Get her off the ice right now!”
You bring yourself to a stop. You look over to the commotion and see the coach with Doc. Standing right next to both of them is James.
You stay on the ice, trying to catch your breath.
It’s Coach's turn to yell at you. “Lapin, come here right this instance.”
Your heart continues beating quickly. You make your way over and when you're at the exit, Coach is pulling you by the arm, heading straight for the benches.
“Sit.”
You look between her and Doc, you can’t even bear to look at James.
“What on Earth is going on?!”
“Take your skates off!”
“Excuse me?”
“Skates. Off. Now.”
You reach to slowly start untying your skates. It doesn’t matter how slow you move. They all sit and wait.
Once they’re both off Doc kneels and reaches for your ankles immediately.
“Woah what the hell are you doing?”
“Which one James?”
Your head snaps towards James. You’re caught, you know it, but if James says something now you’ll hate him for the rest of your life.
James must see it in your face. He’s silent for a second.
“Which one is James? I'm not going to ask again.”
James looks away and answers. “The right one.”
Without another second wasted, Doc is yanking your sock down, revealing a swollen purple ankle. Both Doc and Coach gasp.
“Lapin, what the hell were you thinking?”
You scramble to save this. “It’s not as bad as it looks! I promise!”
You look between Coach and Doc and all you see is pure disappointment. Coach runs a hand through her hair.
“Why? Why are you so adamant about hurting yourself? Do you not realize that you could mess this up beyond repair. What will you do then?”
Your eyes start to sting and you feel them watering up. “I didn’t mean to. It was a stupid accident.”
“Well, that’s exactly my point. You are a star athlete. What are you doing having stupid accidents? You are meant to be taking care of yourself.”
You feel the tears begin to fall. “Oh, now you care? Where was this lecture when you let me skate last year? Or how about all the times I skipped my appointments? How many appointments did you let go unattended? How many times did you look the other way?”
You stare at your coach in anger and she looks right back at you with a look you can’t place.
Doc cuts in. “We need to get it checked out.” You go to stand up and Doc tries to help you immediately. “You really shouldn’t be walking on it.”
“I’ve been doing it just fine.”
Doc shakes his head and reaches to help again. “I mean it. I don’t want you walking on it. James can you come hel-”
You cut him off immediately. “Absolutely not. I said I’m fine. I can walk by myself.”
Realizing that he can’t stop you, Doc lets you start making your way to his office. James follows behind immediately, calling you names. You ignore him but he won’t stop. He grabs your arm. You hear him quietly beg “Please, can you just listen.”
You yank your arm out of his grasp. “I never want to hear from you again, James Potter. I hate you.” you spit out venomously. James displays a clear look of hurt. You leave him there, making your way down the hall alone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a thorough investigation, Doc diagnoses you with a bad sprain. It would have been fine if you had sought medical help immediately, or so he says. You don’t speak if you don’t have to, only offering quiet yes’s and no’s.
Doc is finishing up when you do finally speak a full sentence. “When am I cleared to skate again?”
Doc sighs, like who knew the question was coming. “Well, that’ll be up to you.”
He moves around the room, gathering things for your kit while speaking. “You wanna get better fast, you’re gonna have to take care of that ankle.” he walks over, handing you the kit and paperwork. “That means no agitating it, no skating, and definitely no competition.”
You knew this was coming but hearing it breaks your heart. You feel your eyes start to water again.
“Look,” Doc starts. “I'm really sorry. I knew how much this meant to you.” His words go in one ear and out the other. You silently stand up and grab all your things. You can’t bear to be in this rink anymore. You reach for the newly prescribed crutches and adjust yourself. Doc watches silently. You whisper a quiet thank you and goodbye. You make your way out of the building, trying your best to ignore all the stares. The rink, now busy with people waiting for the upcoming game.
Everyone pushes to get in when you want nothing more than to get out. Every look you receive is filled with pity that you don’t want. You finally make it out, trekking through the parking lot to get to your car. Once you're in you turn it on and drive in silence. When you're in your dorm you head straight to bed. Holding onto one last hope that all of this is just a dream.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know you shouldn’t be here. Well, technically nothing is stopping you from being here. But with Coach currently giving you the cold shoulder, Doc banning you from skating, and James on your hate list, Coming to the rink might not be the smartest of ideas.
That is why you are here right now, at night. You’ve been out for over a week and feel like you’ve been going stir-crazy in your room. Technically the rink is closed. It has been for the past three hours. However, you know Burnie, the maintenance man, doesn’t leave until a while after.
You’re shaking in the cold when you see him walk out the front, going to lock it. He smiles when he sees you. You can't help but smile back. “Hey Burnie.”
“Hey sweetheart” He greets you with just as much enthusiasm as always. “Whatcha doing here?”
“I forgot a couple of things in the locker room. Thought it might be time I come and get it.”
He eyes you suspiciously. You can’t help but laugh. “Burnie I promise I’m just here for some things. Look, no bag, no skates,” you say as you spin in a circle for him.
He reaches to steady you. “Woah okay now. Be careful on that foot.” he sighs. “Alright sweetheart, I'm gonna trust you on this, run in and grab your things and I’ll wait for you right here.”
“What, Burnie no. I'm not gonna make you wait out here in the cold. Plus you shouldn’t have to stay a second later. I already feel bad keeping you right now.”
Burnie’s still wavering. You sigh. “Look Burnie, I’m in a boot and I don’t know if you know this but these are a pain to take off. Both literally and physically. I just need to grab my things but I don’t want you waiting out here on me when you could be halfway home.”
“Fine. You’ve convinced me. Don’t let me find out that you were skating or we're gonna have some problems, sweetheart.”
You giggle pointing at your boot. “Burnie, I already told you I can’t.”
He waves a hand, walking away. “Knowing you? You’d find a way. There are keys in Remus's desk. Lock the front door when you're done.”
“Sir yes Sir.”
You make your way into the lockers, finding your bag of things that you always leave here. You grab it and walk out to the rink. You slump down onto the bench. You start rummaging through your bag. You smile as you find all sorts of knick-knacks.
You pull out what you were looking for, your old skates. You smile fondly as you remember the skating you did in them. Your happiness morphed into sadness when remembering the people who bought you the skates. You hadn’t seen your parents since you moved out to college. Your skating was too mediocre for them to fly out and watch. You remember every single time they turned down your invitations, telling you it would be “A waste of time”.
How could that be? You had everyone telling you you’re the best skater they’ve seen in ages. You have a world champion for a coach. You have so many people coming out to watch you. How can you have all of that and it still not be enough to make your parents see you?
This is why you had to be fantastic. You were supposed to be perfect this year and the last and you ruined it. You still hadn’t told your parents about your injury. You could still hear your mother on the phone from last year. The disappointment, the lack of worry for her child, and worst of all, her deadpan voice muttering into the phone, “What did we expect, knowing you.”
You’re squeezing the skates tightly, you feel your breath pick up. You pinch your eyes shut. Nonono this cannot be happening. You know this feeling all too well. You put your hands over your ears and bring your head down. You feel the familiar tightness in your chest. You try to breathe in and out but your airways feel constricted. You sit up and start rummaging through your bag looking for an inhaler. You find one and pull it out, panicking more when you realize that it’s out of pumps. You can feel your heartbeat in your ears. Hearing the heavy thump over and over again. You get up. You know you have one in your car, you just have to make it out there.
You start walking, trying your best to slow down your breathing. You can start to see the light coming from the front when you hear someone unlocking the door. You walk around the corner, fully expecting to see Burnie who’s come back to kick you out. You freeze when the person turns around.
You and James both stop in your places both gasping in shock.
“Jesus Christ you scared the shit out of me,” he says with a hand over his heart.
You don’t have time for James, so you walk right past him. James takes your silence as an insult.
“Are you still ignoring me?” you don’t answer, you fumble to get the keys out of your pocket. Reaching to unlock the door. When you do, you book it out to the parking lot. You can hear James following you.
“Seriously, you don’t show up for a week and then I find you here in the middle of the night. What were you doing anyways?” he continues behind you. James' tone changes, seeming to land on the only possible explanation. “You were skating weren’t you?” you get your car keys out of your pocket and start clicking on the unlock button over and over again.
“God” he scoffs, “You’re insane. That has to be the only explanation.” whatever else James says you can’t hear. The pain in your chest is unbearable and you start to cough at the lack of air in your lungs. The cold makes every sharp inhale burn. You finally make it to your car and swing the back door open. You jump in, yanking your bag out from under the seat. You dig through it and pull your inhaler out. You bring it to your mouth and inhale instantly.
You sit up, breathing in. Your eyes are closed but you can hear James' shoes scuff to a stop right outside your open door. You stay like this for a while. You finally feel your heart start to slow and the burning in your chest is subsiding. You open your eyes and see James staring back at you with wide eyes.
“Holy shit you have asthma?”
His complete 180 in emotions gives you whiplash.
“Yes you dickhead, I have asthma.”
James completely disregards the insult. “You had asthma this whole time. That's what Doc was asking about right? Or that time on the ice? When you get winded?”
You just nod.
“Yeah, you’re definitely insane.”  you lean forward to smack his arm. “Quit calling me crazy!”
James rests a hand on the top of the car, leaning in, getting a better look at you in the back seat.
“I’m not calling you crazy. I’m calling you insane.”
You cross your arms. “So what, I have asthma. Plenty of athletes have asthma,” you say, looking up at him.
James runs a hand through his hair. “That isn’t the point. I just wish- If you could just-” Without another word he’s getting into the backseat, pushing you over to make room for him.
James clears his throat. “Listen, I’m going to say something and I need you to listen.”
Whatever you're about to say, James doesn’t let you. “Promise. Promise you won’t say anything until I’m finished talking.”  You stare down at James' hand, pinky extended, waiting for yours.
You wrap your pinky around his. He drops his hand but keeps his finger interlocked with yours. You don’t pull away.
“I think you should take a break from skating.”
You roll your eyes. You push away from James but his pinky tightens around yours.
“Wait! You promised you’d listen.”
He’s got a desperate look on his face. “I watch you.”
“James what?”
“Okay no, but yes.” He clarifies. “God I’m really bad at this. What I want to say is that I notice you okay? The second you started skating here I noticed you.”
“You are frustratingly good on the ice. You’ve gotten title after title and it's got everything to do with you” James looks down, fidgeting with your joint pinkies. Ears red. “But ever since your incident last year you’ve gotten so…” he trails off looking for the right word. “Aggressive”
“You’ve gotten so aggressive with your technique, on the ice, and with yourself. There’s something different about you. Everyone thinks it's a newfound determination but I can see it in your eyes, it’s something else. You skate with no regard for your body. What happens when you push it too far? What happens when you force yourself so hard that your body gives up on you? What will you do then?”
The silence is heavy over you both. You look at James and he looks back at you with so much emotion, searching for an answer.
You let out a shaky breath. “What am I if I can’t skate? Can you tell me, James?”
He stumbles over his words, clearly thrown off by your question. He comes up blank.
“Exactly. Skating is all I have, it’s all I am.”
James shakes his head. “No, that isn’t true.”
You let out an exasperated laugh. “Do you think I’d be here right now if it weren’t for my skating? I’m here because it’s what I'm good at. I have so many people betting on me, so many expectations to uphold, so many people to prove that I’m worth it.”
James leans in closer and speaks gently. “Why do you think that you aren’t already the best? Why is it so hard to believe that you are amazing at what you do?”
His gentle tone does little to comfort you. He doesn’t get it. “If I’m so great how come my parents won’t come to see me?” you yell, your tone coming off harsher than you had intended.
You recognize the emotion behind James' stare, it’s pity and you hate it.
You can’t bear to look at him, embarrassed by your outburst.
“Hey,” you keep your gaze towards your lap.
“Hey, look at me.” you feel his hand come under your chin as he lifts your face to meet his eyes.
He unlatches his pinky from yours and brings his hand up to hold your face.
“Is that what it is, you feel like you’ve got a crowd to appeal to? Well, guess what? You don’t owe anyone anything. You skate because you love it not because you feel the need to meet intangible expectations. If your parents can’t see how good you are then that's on them, you don’t need them.”
You groan and reach for his wrist, pulling his hand away from your face. “That's easy for you to say.”
James furrows his brows at that, “What’s that supposed to mean.”
“You have your parents here offering you endless support. No offense, but you could sit out an entire game and they’d still whoop and holler about how proud they are of you. You have a team that worships the ground you walk on. You have Remus and Sirius. What do I have? Who do I have? Coach?” You raise a hand to wipe away your tears but it’s no use. “I’m a thousand miles away from everything and everyone that I love. Being good, no, being fucking fantastic is the only way to get their attention. So if that’s what I need to be then so be it.”
You let out one shaky breath and it all breaks loose. You bury your head in your hands, trying to muffle whatever mess you look like from James. After a short moment of sobbing into your hands, you feel hands pull at your arms. Before you know it, James is pulling you into a warm embrace.
The angle is a bit awkward, considering the size of your backseat but he still manages to get his arms wrapped around you. Your head lands on his chest, ear pressed against it. You stiffen at first but slowly wrap your arms around him. You both sit in silence. He gently runs a hand up and down your back, while the other rests on the back of your head, holding it. You listen to the beat of his heart, which moves rapidly. You can’t help but smile slightly. Despite being the one to make a bold gesture, he’s the nervous one.
“You aren’t as alone as you think.”
“What?” You go to lift your head but James pushes it back onto his chest. Heart beating quicker.
“You're Not alone. You have Sirius and Remus, just as much as I do if not more. They adore you a little too much. And whether you believe it or not you have Doc and just about everyone else who you cross paths with in the rink.”
He clears his throat for the next one. “And you have me.”
It’s said so quickly you almost miss it. You’re sure you would’ve if you weren’t so close to him.
You go to lift your head again but he pushes it back down. You groan. “James.”
He doesn’t respond. You go to move but he holds you in place again. “James Potter, let me look at you.”
He doesn’t budge, “I’d rather you didn’t”
“James, if you don’t let me move, so help me god.”
Your tone seems to do it. His hand slips from where it rested on your head. Once you get a good look at him, you almost laugh at the sight in front of you. James Potter, Red in the face, with a look of embarrassment so bad, he could die. He looks everywhere but at you. Eyes darting around the car.
“James”
“Yes?”
“Look at me.”
He does for a second and then looks away.
“James,” you say sternly.
“Yes?” He says picking at the seats.
Without putting much thought into it you smack both hands on his face, forcing him to look at you. You seemed to surprise him more than yourself. James stares at you with wide eyes. You’d done it without thinking and how you have no course of action.
You both blink at each other.
“What was it that you said just now?”
He doesn’t turn away this time. That's progress. “What were we talking about?” he says with a dazy voice. You look at him expectantly. James, who realizes he has nowhere to go, blurts it out.
“I said that you have me. There. Happy?” he doesn't stop there. “I said you have me because you do. All the time, every day I'm thinking about you, which is crazy considering how much you berate me. But that must be it. I must be crazy because I love it all the same. I care about you, even though half the time you make me want to slam my head into a locker, I care. So, yes, you have me.”
Through your hands, you feel the heat of his face. Despite the strong blush and red ears, James looks at you so earnestly that you can’t help what comes next.
Hands still on his face you pull him forward into a kiss. He freezes and you pull away. Just for a split moment, you worry that you made a mistake. But before you know it James surges forward, reconnecting your lips. Whatever hesitation there was before, is gone now.
His lips move against yours slowly, tentatively, exploring. You feel a finger trace the line of your jaw. Then the hand slips behind your head, bringing you closer. The sweet kiss now deepened with the hunger shared between you both. You raise your arms to wrap around his neck. You feel like you can’t breathe but you don’t stop.
With his newfound confidence, James moves forward. Your back hits the seat and James hovers over you now. He moves to lay himself over you. You feel his hand running up and down your side. You gasp into the kiss when a cold hand slips under your shirt, resting on your bare waist. James groans at the feeling of your bare skin, squeezing your side. You can feel your heartbeat in your ears. You don’t want to stop, ever. But the more James runs his hands over you and kisses you with an insatiable passion, the less you can breathe.
You ignore it at first, but the aching in your chest only gets stronger. You feel like you’re drowning, and you decide that hyperventilating while making out isn’t the way to go so in one swift motion you sit up, pushing James off of you.
You breathe in harshly. James now sits up straight, staring at you wide-eyed, glasses askew. You laugh but it sends you right into a coughing fit. You start to panic a bit and search for your inhaler. James snaps out of his daze and seems to get the memo. After what feels like forever, James lifts the inhaler. “Got it” he yells triumphantly.
Snatching it from his hand, you take a couple of puffs, breathing in and out slowly.
“Woah. I guess you could say I took your breath away.”
You shoot him a look but can’t help but burst out laughing. James' laugh follows.
“No, seriously though. Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine. Just a bit winded.”
James smirks, seemingly a bit too proud. “Sorry about that,” he says with fake sympathy.
“Sorry about what? Trying to eat my face off or trying to take me in the back of my car?”
James' face goes bright red. You don’t understand how he can be so confident yet so easily embarrassed.
“I-I okay, woah, I-” He stutters over his words.
“Gosh James, I thought you’d have a bit more class than that.”
He scoffs, “I have plenty of class and I don’t think I heard any complaints from you.”
You shrug, “Could’ve been better.”
James' jaw falls open in disbelief. “Oh really now.”
“Yup”
Before you know it he’s bringing you down to your back and you let out a yelp of surprise.
“Well since you’re so great I guess you’ll have to help me practice.”
You hum. “Oh yes, you’ll need all the practice you can get.”
James lets out a loud laugh, making your heart flutter. “Yeah, well let's hope you don’t have to reach for your inhaler every 5 minutes.”
You smack his shoulder. “Hey! I am a star athlete. I don’t think a little acti-”
James cuts you off, bringing his lips to yours. This time it's soft and sweet. James pulls away. “Talking to you is going to be a lot easier now that I can do that.”
“Keep talking and that’ll be the last time you get to do that.”
James nods quickly. “Yes ma’am. Message received.”
With a nod from you, James is back on you. He leans into you heavily, moving his lips with yours. You reach up for his glasses, feeling them start to dig into your face. James' hand comes to your wrist, stopping you. Pulling away, he rushes out a ‘wait!’
You look at him confused. “What?”
“Don’t take them off.”
“James, as much as I love your glasses, they’re digging into my face.”
James blinks at you with a slight pout on his face. “I can’t see anything when I take them off.”
“Okay?”
He sighs, “I can’t see you when I take them off.”
You roll your eyes at him. “James Potter you are such a sap.”
He rolls his eyes back at you. “Yeah, well you’ll just have to deal with it.”
“I suppose I will. Okay they can stay on”
James smiles brightly. “Yay! Now shut up and let me kiss you.”
And who are you to deny him?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Alright, you guys did great today! Don’t forget to tell your parents that there won't be any classes next week.” you hear a chorus of answers promising they will. Considering you’re talking to a bunch of toddlers, you make a mental note to send out an email.
You guide them off the ice and towards their parents, waving bye to them all.
You’ve been helping teach the toddler class while their coach is out of town. Doc hadn't fully cleared you but gave you the green light to teach the little ones.
You make your way towards the office to drop off the sign-in forms. When you walk in, you’re greeted by a smiling Remus.
“Hello, love. How are the tots?”
You give him a tired smile, “Rambunctious as always.”
Remus laughs, taking the papers from you. “You think you’d take this opportunity to get away from this place but no.”
You lean forward on the counter. “And miss out on seeing you every day? No way.”
Remus shakes his head, turning away from you. Ears slightly pink. “You’re insufferable.”
Before you can respond you hear someone else enter the office. More like two someones.
James and Sirius walk over to where you’re talking to Remus. James' eyes shift from you to Remus’ red ears and then back to you.
“Hey, I thought I told you to stop flirting with Remus.” He says with a slight frown.
You shrug, “I’ve done no such thing.”
James rolls his eyes. “Yeah right. Liar.”
Sirius and Remus erupt in laughter as James pouts.
Sirius ruffles James' hair. “Oh James, it’s sweet that you think you can stop whatever it is they’ve got going on.”
James huffs, pointing at Remus. “You’ve got to stop whatever alluring charm you’ve got going on.”
Sirius laughs harder. Remus gives James a cheeky smile. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m just myself.”
You swoon dramatically at his words. “Oh, Remus.”
“Hey! No, don't swoon!” James says, looking frantically between the two of you.
Remus and Sirius roar in laughter at his reaction.
With the other two still laughing, James walks over to you. You give him a sweet smile.
He frowns at you. “Why do you insist on giving me a hard time?”
“Someone's got to keep you on your toes, humble you a bit.” He glares at you but breaks into a smile of his own.
With Sirius and Remus now wrapped up in their own conversation, James leans in a bit closer.
“Hm, humble me? How can I be humble when you’re praising me all the time when we-” You slap a hand over his mouth, blushing furiously. You feel him smirk against your hand.
He reaches for your wrist, pulling your hand away, giving it a soft kiss. “How were the lessons?” He says changing the subject.
“They were great. Lenny didn’t cry at all this time.”
He gives you an encouraging pat on the waist. "Nice, and what about your foot?”
You shrug, “It feels fine. I think stretching before ice time helps.”
James smiles. “You’ve been doing the stretches?”
You nod. He gives you a high five “That's my girl.”
He goes silent, looking between you and his friend's chit-chatting. He leans in, whispering into your ear.
“Hey, when's your appointment with Doc again?”
You think for a minute. “Um, not till this afternoon, why?”
“So you’re free right now?”
“Yeah”
“What a coincidence, so am I.” He says with a mischievous look in his eyes.
A moment pauses.
“Well. What are you waiting for?”
James springs into action. His hand grabs yours, leading the both of you out of the office.
“Hey, where are the two going?”
Without turning around James yells out “Practice” You can’t help but laugh at the confused responses you get from Sirius and Remus.
James continues down his path, determined.
“Wait James, what about my bag and my-”
He pats the side of his bag. Hanging from a chain is one of your backup inhalers. You stare at him in shock. With a quick kiss on the forehead and a cheeky smile, James continues to drag you both out of the rink.
Practice does ensue.

✧.* talk too much; kmg
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
synopsis:  a charismatic but slightly awkward mingyu, whose tendency to talk too much creates hilariously unpredictable situations.  one early morning he spots a stranger sitting in the corner of the café—someone who's quiet, mysterious, and a little intimidating. drawn to her aura, he strikes up a conversation. but every time he opens his mouth, his words seem to betray him.
paring: mingyu x fem! reader.
genre:strangers2whatever (hehe)
warning/s:mentions of substances (alcohol) some minor sexy stuff, but not much really.
word count: 11k
content: . non-idol idolings, awkward over sharer mingyu.
note: non rlly edited prob weird typos, xo. ( there's a part 2 in my drafts fully bc I couldn't stop writing about these two)
Tumblr media
The bell above the café door jingled as the stranger stepped inside. Mingyu, standing in front of the register, halfway through recounting a story to his favorite barista about the time he accidentally adopted a stray cat. He paused mid-sentence, caught off guard by the stranger’s presence.
She was unlike anyone who usually wandered into the cozy café—a stark contrast to the warm, inviting space. Dressed in muted tones, she carried an air of quiet confidence and mystery, expression unreadable. The girl didn’t look around or hesitate, walking directly to a table in the far corner as though she had been here a hundred times before.
Mingyu watched her settle in, his curiosity piqued. The girl placed a cherry red leather-bound journal on the table, opened it to a blank page, and began scribbling furiously.
“She doesn't look like she’s here for the coffee,” Mingyu muttered to himself.
Before he could stop himself, he grabbed the notepad behind the counter from his stunned regular bar keep and approached the table.
“Hi there,” he said brightly. “Welcome to uh, Black Rabbit. Can I get you something? Coffee? Tea? One of the world-famous muffins? Well, they’re not world-famous yet, but I think they are. Anyway—”
The stranger looked up, her sharp eyes meeting his. Mingyu froze for a moment, forgetting whatever it was he was going to say next.
“Black coffee,” the stranger said curtly. Her voice was low, measured, and entirely unimpressed.
“Got it. One black coffee. Simple. Classic. You know, I respect that. Some people come in here and order drinks with so many extra syrups and toppings it’s like they’re trying to create a dessert in disguise. But you—you’re all about the essentials.”
The girl raised an eyebrow. “Is there a point to this? Also do you even work here?”
Mingyu blinked, realizing he was rambling. “Uh, nope! No point. Just making conversation. I’ll get that coffee for you. And, uh, no I don’t. Just helping out.”
He turned and practically sprinted back to the counter, silently berating himself. “Cool, Mingyu. It's really cool.”
When he returned with the coffee, he found her staring out the window, lost in thought. He set the cup down gently, but instead of leaving, he spoke again.
“Hey, I don’t mean to pry, but are you... writing something? You looked really focused earlier. Like, next-level focused. Are you an author? Or maybe a secret spy writing down your next mission?”
The stranger sighed, looking back at him with an exasperated expression. “Do you always ask this many questions?”
“Only when I’m curious,” Mingyu replied with a grin. “And I’m very curious about you. You’ve got that whole mysterious, ‘I’ve got secrets’ vibe going on.”
The girl finally gave a hint of a smile, though it was barely noticeable. “Maybe I do.”
That small flicker of amusement was all the encouragement Mingyu needed. “Okay, so you are a spy. Or an undercover rockstar. Oh! Or a—”
“I’m sorry, but I’m trying to work,” she interrupted, though her tone was softer now.
Mingyu took a step back, raising his hands. “Got it. I’ll leave you to it. But if you need anything—like a refill, a snack, or a friendly face—I’m your guy.”
“But you said you don’t work here.”
As he walked away, the stranger shook their head, a faint smile tugging at their lips. Mingyu may have talked too much, but there was something disarmingly genuine about him that made it hard to stay annoyed.
Heading up to grab his own cup from the counter, Mingyu stole another glance at her and couldn’t help but wonder what kind of story they were carrying—and whether he’d somehow become a part of it.
The next afternoon, the café was busier than usual, filled with a mix of students typing away on their laptops and a few regulars deep in conversation. Mingyu was at the counter, enthusiastically explaining to another regular Mrs. Park how the secret to perfect coffee lay in "a gentle pour and a mindful attitude," when the bell jingled again.
Mingyu's head snapped up, and sure enough, the girl from yesterday was back. This time, she seemed even more aloof, her eyes scanning the room briefly before settling back on her spot in the corner. She didn't notice Mingyu’s stare as she quietly set down her cherry red journal and began flipping through its pages.
Mingyu found himself momentarily frozen in place, suddenly aware of how *awkward* his last encounter had been. "Don't be weird this time. Don't overdo it," he muttered to himself, but his mind was already spiraling into potential conversation starters. What if he said something she’d find interesting? What if he said too much?
With a deep breath, Mingyu stepped away from the counter. He was *determined* to keep things casual.
“Hey, you,” Mingyu called out, walking toward her table, “back again, huh? Is the coffee that good, or are you just here for a change of scenery?”
The girl looked up from her journal, her eyes scanning him briefly before she spoke in her usual flat tone. “Just getting out of the house for a while.”
Mingyu nodded, trying to read the mood. “Yeah, I get that. Sometimes, you just need a little break from your own four walls. I mean, my walls are full of stuff—vinyl records, old concert tickets, a couple of questionable cat sweaters... but still.”
Her lips twitched, just for a second. “A questionable cat sweater?”
Mingyu grinned. “Yeah. It’s got a picture of a cat wearing glasses, trying to look intellectual. But honestly, I think it just makes the cat look like it’s about to take over the world. It was for my work Christmas party, but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t worn it more than once.”
There was a moment of silence, and then the corner of her mouth curled up slightly. “I’d like to see that.”
Mingyu’s heart did a little flip. She’s smiling. "It’s not for sale. Only available to cat enthusiasts who appreciate the depth of their feline overlords."
Her smile lingered for just a second longer before it faded back into the neutral expression she wore so often. “I’ll take your word for it,” she said softly, her fingers tapping lightly on the table.
Mingyu felt a brief hesitation. Maybe it was better not to press too hard. He had a tendency to run with a conversation until it got awkward, and right now, the conversation felt almost... comfortable.
"So," Mingyu started, his mind racing for something else to say, “I’m guessing you’re writing more top-secret spy notes today? Or is it a shocking revelation about how you once got lost in a supermarket for three hours?”
The girl’s eyebrow arched. “That’s an oddly specific guess.”
Mingyu shrugged. “You'd be surprised how many people get lost in supermarkets. But, you know, it's all about the aisles and the lights. Before you know it, you're trapped in the frozen food section, wondering how you got there in the first place.”
She watched him for a moment, then laughed softly—a real laugh this time, not just a polite chuckle. It was low, but genuine, and it made Mingyu’s chest feel lighter than it had in days.
“Okay, I’ll admit that’s sort of funny, considering I assume you’re speaking from experience,” she said, surprising him even more. “But no, I’m not writing about that. Just...” She paused for a moment, her fingers stopping their restless tapping. “Just... trying to work through some things.”
The shift in her tone was subtle, but Mingyu could feel the change. For the first time, he wasn’t just a guy talking too much. He was hearing her in a way that felt real, as if she was opening up to him without fully realizing it.
“I get it,” Mingyu said, his voice softening. “Sometimes you just need a space to think things through. Like, I talk on the radio every night—way too much sometimes—but I guess it helps me sort out my own head.”
The girl looked up at him then, her eyes lingering on his face with a quiet intensity that made his heart race.
“You talk on the radio?” she asked.
Mingyu chuckled awkwardly. “Yeah. You could say I’m kind of a big deal, I mean here anyway to people who know me” He made a vague gesture to the café around them. “But only to the people who are really into weird facts and  random stories. Like, one time I told my listeners about how I accidentally ended up with two lunch boxes after a miscommunication with a vending machine. I’m not proud of it, but hey, it makes for a great segment."
She tilted her head slightly. “What else do you talk about?”
Mingyu opened his mouth to reply, but then realized he was getting carried away. "Well, I don't want to bore you with my radio segment. Not everyone's cup of tea."
She looked thoughtful for a second. “I’d listen to you.”
His heart skipped. “Really?”
“Maybe.” She leaned back in her chair, her gaze still steady. “If you were actually interesting enough.”
Mingyu burst out laughing. “Okay, ouch. But I’ll take that as a challenge.”
She shrugged, and for a moment, Mingyu just stood there, unsure whether he’d said something that was too much or if she was just being her usual, unreadable self.
Finally, he broke the silence with a casual, “If you do end up listening, I’ll make sure to talk about my cat sweater for at least twenty minutes. That’ll make it worth your while.”
A flash of amusement crossed her face. “I’ll hold you to that.”
Mingyu smirked, making a mental note to talk in depth about his weird festive sweater, “Are you ever going to tell me your name?”
“If you’re worth it.” A challenge from the enigma of a girl.
“Okay, I’m Mingyu, by the way.”
She just smiled as he walked off and went back to her black coffee without another word.
Later in the night, the rain hitting the pavement outside of his office he watched as he had just finished setting up for his radio show. He spoke into the microphone, he could still feel the weight of his earlier conversation with the girl in the café. Something about her, her quiet mystery, had left him thinking, and for the first time in a long while, he felt calm on air.
“Good evening, everyone,” Mingyu’s voice boomed through the mic. “I’m your host, Mingyu, here to take you through the night with some extremely random thoughts in between your hot hit countdown. But first, let’s talk about something near and dear to my heart: cats. Yes, that’s right. Cats. And how, in some cultures, they’re considered mystical beings that can sense your innermost thoughts. Which, if you ask me, explains a lot about why my cat is currently judging me for eating cereal at 11 PM.”
He paused, chuckling to himself as he imagined the girl sitting in the corner of the café, maybe listening to him right now.
“Anyway,” he continued, leaning into the mic. “If anyone out there has a cat sweater as legendary as mine, I’d love to hear about it. Or if you’ve ever gotten lost in a supermarket, accidentally adopting an extra lunchbox, send me a message. You know, just the things we all need to talk about. Let’s connect, guys. Let’s keep it real. If you’re watching us live right now on Youtube leave your stories in the chat or don’t hesitate to hit me up on twitter at gyunation.”
The next morning, the café was as cozy as ever, with soft music playing in the background and a few early risers getting their caffeine fix. Mingyu was ordering coffee when the door opened again. He turned, already knowing who it was before she even walked in.
The girl from the had returned. She gave him a small, knowing smile as she walked in and headed toward her usual table.
Mingyu’s heart skipped a beat. “I didn’t expect to see you here again.”
She raised an eyebrow. “I said I’d hold you to it.”
He blinked. “Wait, what?”
“You’re wearing your cat sweater today,” she said with a hint of a smile, her eyes glinting. “And I’m listening to you. Now, tell me about the mystical powers of cats, Mingyu.”
Mingyu couldn’t help it. He grinned. He’d found a way to connect, just like he’d always hoped—through the stories, through the weirdness, and maybe, just maybe, through the unexpected bonds that only seemed to form when you weren’t trying so hard.
“If you finally tell me your name.”
“It’s y/n.”
Mingyu blinked, a mix of surprise and excitement flickering in his eyes. "Y/N," he repeated slowly, as if savoring the sound of it. It was simple, yet it felt like a small victory. There was something about hearing her name that made everything feel a little less mysterious, a little more real.
“I didn’t expect it to be so... normal,” Mingyu said with a half-joking grin, but there was a warmth in his tone that made the words feel genuine. "I was kind of hoping for something  cooler, like... I don't know, Phoenix or something. Or even Astrid, that would’ve been a great name."
Y/N raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “You’ve been thinking about this, haven’t you?”
Mingyu let out a short, embarrassed laugh. “Maybe. I get random ideas sometimes. Like, when I was younger, I was convinced my name should’ve been something cooler, like Max or Axel. But then I realized I was always just Mingyu. And now, well, I’m starting to like it." He hesitated for a second. “I’m starting to like the name y/n too.”
There was a flicker of something in her expression, something soft and fleeting, before it was replaced with her usual composed demeanor. “I’m glad to know you like it. Mingyu is honestly a nicer name than Axel. Though, you’re still in trouble. I’m waiting for my cat wisdom.”
Mingyu nodded enthusiastically, happy to follow the new flow of their conversation. He slid into the chair across from her, trying to hide the fact his hands were still slightly shaking from the excitement of actually talking with her. “Okay, okay. The mystical powers of cats—where do I even begin?” He leaned in dramatically, as if about to reveal some ancient secret.
"First of all, cats are masters of manipulation," Mingyu began, gesturing with his hands for emphasis. "I mean, if you’ve ever had a cat sit on your lap, staring at you like they know you’ve got food, but they're too dignified to beg—that’s sort of like when you know you’re in their power."
Y/N’s lips twitched, and for the first time, she seemed fully engaged in his rambling. “Manipulation, huh?” she murmured, leaning back in her chair. "I thought we were talking about mystical powers, not  deviousness."
Mingyu grinned. “That is their mystical power, come on. They can manipulate you into giving them whatever they want, whether it’s food, affection, or a new scratching post. It’s all about the gaze, the quiet dominance. There’s a reason people say cats can see into your soul.”
Y/N nodded slowly, clearly entertained. “Okay, I’ll give you that one. But what about the mystical part? You know, the one where cats are supposed to be magical, like, bringing good luck and stuff.”
“That’s a good one.” Mingyu leaned forward, his eyes lighting up with the sudden spark of inspiration. “Well, think about it. Cats sleep all day, but when they wake up, they’re already confident they can get what they want. They just know that time is precious, that sleep is sacred, and that the real power is in being present when it counts.”
He paused for a second, realizing that this wasn’t just him making random, funny observations anymore. There was something about how he’d said it—how focused he’d been—something deeper that he hadn’t planned for. Mingyu quickly shook his head, feeling a little embarrassed.
“Okay, maybe I’ve been watching too many cat videos, but you get what I mean, right?”
Y/N’s eyes softened, and she gave him an almost imperceptible nod. “I get it. Cats don’t waste time. They don’t do things for anyone but themselves. That’s kind of powerful.”
“Exactly.” Mingyu’s smile was so wide it threatened to overtake his face. “It’s like they’ve got it all figured out. We’re all running around, doing a million things at once, but cats? They take it easy, let things come to them and somehow, it works out.”
Y/N sat there, looking at him for a moment, before her gaze drifted down to her journal. "I never thought about it that way," she said quietly.
Mingyu noticed the shift in her energy. It was subtle, but he could tell that his words had struck something deep. Before he could say anything more, she lifted her head again, her expression more thoughtful than before.
"Maybe I need to take a page out of the cat playbook," she murmured, almost to herself.
Mingyu watched her for a moment, wondering if he’d said too much, or if he was getting into dangerous territory where he might have pushed her too far with his endless chatter. But when she glanced back up at him, there was no irritation, only curiosity.
“I think we all do,” Mingyu said softly. “We could all use a little more time to just be. No pressure. No rush. Just existing in the moment.”
Y/N gave a small smile, and for the first time, Mingyu felt like it wasn’t just her pulling away from the world. It was almost like she was letting a piece of herself connect to him, in this little moment of vulnerability.
"So," he said after a beat, trying to keep the conversation light, "what are you going to do now? Go home and take a nap like a true cat?"
Y/N chuckled, the sound soft and genuine. "No, I think I’ll stay here for a bit longer." She looked up at him, her eyes glinting with amusement. "But maybe I’ll actually finish what I’m writing today. You know, before I get distracted by any more of your stories."
Mingyu’s grin widened, feeling a sense of accomplishment that he hadn't realized he was craving. “I promise, I’ll keep the stories to a minimum. But if you need a distraction, you know where to find me.”
She raised her cup of coffee, as if to make a toast. "I might just have to do that."
Later that day Mingyu returned to his usual post at the counter on his break from the studio, his mind still buzzing with the conversation he’d just had with Y/N. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this good about a conversation. His thoughts wandered back to her, and how she hadn’t seemed annoyed by his rambling. Instead, she’d actually listened—like she wanted to listen.
As the afternoon light filtered through the café windows, he found himself stealing glances at Y/N from the counter. She was still scribbling in her journal, her focus so intense it was almost like she was channeling her own version of that "cat power" he had talked about earlier.
And maybe, just maybe, he could be a part of her story. Or at least, part of the narrative she was writing in her mind.
The thought made him smile to himself, and for the first time in a while, he felt like he wasn’t just talking to fill silence. He was talking because it felt like she was listening—and maybe, just maybe, she was starting to like the sound of his voice, too.
Y/N’s eyes sparkled as she grabbed her things from the table and walked up to him standing in line,”I already got you another one, I remembered you came here around this time yesterday so I just took a shot.” Her fingers brushing against his in the exchange.
“I think it’s going to be just what I need,” he said softly, her smile lingering.
Mingyu nodded, suddenly aware of the quiet space between them. For a moment, neither of them spoke, but there was something comforting in the silence, something deeper than just shared words. It was like they both understood that there was more here than just a random meeting. Maybe, just maybe, they were starting to find something that couldn’t easily be put into words.
“So, what’s on your agenda today?” Mingyu asked, leaning against the counter, trying to keep the conversation going. “Any secret missions? Any mysteries waiting to be solved?”
Y/N took a sip of her espresso, savoring the rich taste before setting the cup down and looking at him with a thoughtful expression. “Actually, yes. I have been thinking about something,” she said, her voice quieter now, more reflective. “I’ve been thinking about what it means to really be somewhere. You know? Per our earlier conversation. Not just physically, but mentally. To actually let yourself be present and not be running from one thing to the next.”
Mingyu’s brows furrowed as he processed her words. “I get that,” he said slowly, almost to himself. “I think... I think I’ve been running around like that a lot lately. Always filling up my time with stuff, trying to get things done, but I’m never really here, you know? It’s like, I’m always on autopilot.”
Y/N nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Exactly. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise. But sometimes, the quiet is where the answers are.”
Mingyu felt a strange warmth spread through him at her words. It was as though they were having a conversation that was much bigger than coffee, much bigger than just now. It felt like she was giving him a glimpse into something he wasn’t quite ready to admit to himself.
"You know," he said softly, "I think I needed to hear that today."
Y/N looked at him, her gaze steady. "I think you were meant to hear it."
The words hung between them, and for a moment, Mingyu felt like the whole world outside the café had faded into the background. It was just him and her, and in this small, quiet space, they had carved out a little corner of understanding.
But before he could say anything more, Y/N stood, her bag slung over her shoulder. “I should get going,” she said, offering him a gentle smile. “But I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Same time?” Mingyu asked, suddenly eager for the next day, for the next conversation, for the next moment with her.
She gave a slight nod, her smile turning a little more playful. “Same time. And don’t forget your charm, Mingyu.”
He laughed, feeling lighter than he had in days. “I’ll bring it. I promise.”
As Y/N left the café, Mingyu stood there for a moment, watching her go. He had no idea what was coming next, no idea what kind of story he and Y/N were writing together. But for the first time in a long time, he didn’t feel the need to rush ahead to the next chapter. He was content to let it unfold, slowly and naturally, like the turning of a page.
And when the door swung closed behind her, he found himself already looking forward to tomorrow.
This time, he didn’t mind that he was talking too much.
It was a slow evening at the radio station. Mingyu leaned back in his chair, spinning lazily in circles while a groovy indie track filled the studio. The red ON AIR sign glowed softly above the window, casting the room in a warm, familiar light.
"Alright, everyone," Mingyu said into the mic as the song faded. His voice slid effortlessly into his signature radio tone—smooth, playful, and just a touch self-deprecating. "It's your favorite over-sharer again. If you're tuning in tonight, let me know you're out there. Send me your requests, your shout-outs, or your best guess for how long it took me to ruin my dinner plans this week."
As he flipped through a stack of vinyl records, his thoughts wandered. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the now not so stranger at the café. She had become a regular fixture in his life over such a short time, always sitting in the same corner, writing in that journal of hers.
The thought made him smile, and before he knew it, he was speaking again.
"You know," he began, leaning closer to the mic, "there’s this person who’s been hanging around my favorite café lately. They don’t say much, but there’s something about them—you know, the kind of person who’s like a locked treasure chest. You just want to figure out what’s inside. I, of course, have been trying to charm them with my wit and sparkling conversation. Has it worked? I’d say sort of. But hey, persistence is key, right?"
He chuckled, then added, “Anyway, I’ve decided to name them ‘Mystery Corner Person.’ If you’re listening, MCP, this one’s for you.”
Mingyu queued up the next track—a dreamy, nostalgic tune that felt just right. As it played, he leaned back and sighed, wondering if she's still listening to hear his ridiculous ramblings.
But, she did.
The next morning at the café, y/n walked in earlier than usual, her journal tucked under one arm. Mingyu was sitting at a high top table at the window when they approached him directly.
“I heard your show last night,” she said, her voice as calm and unreadable as ever.
Mingyu froze, a muffin balanced precariously in one hand. “Oh, uh—did you?”
Y/n tilted her head. “Mystery Corner Person?”
Mingyu’s ears turned pink. “That... might’ve been about you.”
“I figured.” They placed their journal on the counter, resting their hand on the cover. “You’re very open. I was waiting for you to bring it up actually.”
“I like to think it’s part of my charm,” he said, flashing a sheepish grin.
For a moment, they just stared at him, and Mingyu worried he’d made a fool of himself again. But then, to his surprise, the stranger smiled—a real, genuine smile.
“Your persistence is let’s just say.. entertaining,” she said, her voice carrying the faintest hint of warmth.
Mingyu felt a rush of relief and a spark of something else—hope, maybe. “Does this mean you’ll give me a shot? By being friends, I mean. Or acquaintances. Or—well, anything, really.”
Y/n chuckled softly, their smile lingering. “I’ll give you a shot.”
As they turned to head to their usual corner, Mingyu couldn’t help but grin. It wasn’t much, but it was something. And for the first time, he felt like he might actually be breaking through that carefully guarded exterior.
He picked up his muffin and placed it back on the plate, walking over to their table with a little extra bounce in his step. Maybe his tendency to talk too much wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
“So, mystery corner person,” Mingyu started, his voice light, playful. “Does this mean we’re friends now, or are you just humoring me?”
Y/N raised an eyebrow, her lips quivering. “I’d say we’re on the road to friendship. But I wouldn’t get too comfortable just yet.”
“Fair enough,” Mingyu said, leaning against the back of the chair across from her, still standing. He tried to suppress the urge to keep talking, but the words came tumbling out before he could stop them. “I’ll take what I can get. Besides, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s the quiet ones who have the best stories, and I’m betting you’ve got some good ones. Maybe you’ll share them with me one day.”
Y/N chuckled softly, the sound melodic. “I’m not exactly one for sharing my whole life, though. Not yet, anyway.”
“Well, no pressure,” Mingyu said quickly, lifting his hands as if in mock surrender. “You’ve got your own time. But I’ve got to warn you—I’m a terrible secret keeper. So if you start telling me anything too wild, I might end up broadcasting it.”
“Sounds dangerous,” Y/N replied, her tone a little teasing. “I’ll make sure to be careful around you then.”
Mingyu smiled at the playful challenge in her voice. He was surprised how easy it felt to talk to her now. There was something about her calm, unruffled nature that made him feel comfortable in a way he hadn’t expected.
He sat down at the edge of the table, leaning forward. “Alright, alright. I’ll stop with the radio host charm for now,” he said, waving his hand dramatically. “But you should know, it’s a hard habit to break. I’ve been talking to a microphone alone for so long, I forget there are real people out there sometimes.”
Y/N glanced at him over the rim of her coffee cup, the corner of her mouth turning up in a small smile. “I think it’s a good thing. You’ve got a way of making everything sound a little brighter.”
Mingyu blinked at her, taken aback by the unexpected compliment. He wasn’t sure how to respond at first, but he found himself chuckling, trying to play it cool. “Well, thank you. That’s probably the nicest thing anyone’s said about my rambling.”
Y/N gave a slight shrug, but her eyes sparkled. “You make it sound like rambling is a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s nice to just say things and see where they go.”
“See?” Mingyu said, leaning in as if he’d cracked a code. “That’s what I’m talking about. You get it. You’re a fellow over-sharer in disguise, I just know it.”
Y/N let out a laugh, shaking her head. “Maybe. But I’ll have to decide whether you’re worthy of knowing my secrets first.”
“Well, I can’t promise I won’t annoy you with my stories,” Mingyu said with a wink. “But I’m pretty good at keeping secrets. If it makes you feel better, I won’t be sharing anything you don’t want me to.”
“Hmm, we’ll see about that,” Y/N said, a sly smile tugging at her lips.
Mingyu chuckled, standing up from his chair and giving a mock bow. “Alright, I’ll leave you to write. But, just so you know, I’m very persistent, so you’re going to be seeing a lot of me, mystery corner person.”
Y/n just waved him off, “For someone who wanted to learn my name so badly you’re in the habit of not using it.”
“Ah, you’ll be hearing a lot more of it. Don’t worry too much.”
Y/N shook her head with a faint smile, but just as he turned to leave, something tugged at her resolve. She called out after him, her voice hesitant yet firm enough to stop him in his tracks. “Mingyu?”
“Yeah?” He turned around quickly, almost like he’d been waiting for her to say his name again. Their eyes met, and for a moment, the air between them felt charged, words hanging unspoken.
Y/N hesitated, her fingers brushing the edge of her notebook as if it could anchor her nerves. “Would you want to have dinner or something? I mean now that we’re friends, I figured we could hang out more. Not just over coffee.”
Mingyu’s expression softened into a genuine smile, one that reached his eyes and made them crinkle at the corners. “I’d love that,” he said without hesitation. “How about tonight? I’m off at 7:30. Can we meet at Yeatta’s? It’s just a block or two from here.”
“Yeah, that works for me,” Y/N replied, her heart skipping a beat as she tried to play it cool.
“Great,” Mingyu said, his excitement barely contained as he gave her a small wave. “I’ll see you there, Y/N.”
As he walked away, Y/N found herself staring at the space he had just vacated, her lips curving into an uncontrollable smile. There was something about Mingyu that made her heart feel lighter—like maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something worth holding onto.
Mingyu arrived at Yeatta’s at exactly 7:25, five minutes early but not surprising given the way he bounced on the balls of his feet, clearly eager. When Y/N walked in a minute later, scanning the small, warmly lit restaurant, she found him standing by the entrance, his smile lighting up as soon as he spotted her.
“Right on time,” he teased, holding the door open for her. “I was starting to think you might stand me up.”
“Oh, please,” Y/N shot back, smirking as she stepped inside. “You’d just hunt me down at the coffee shop tomorrow.”
“True,” Mingyu admitted with a grin. “I’m nothing if not persistent.”
They were seated at a cozy booth near the back, the smell of wood-fired pizza and roasted garlic wafting through the air. The atmosphere was relaxed, with dim lighting and soft jazz playing in the background. Y/N found herself relaxing more than she expected, her usual hesitations melting away under Mingyu’s easy charm.
“So,” Mingyu began, unfolding his napkin with a flourish, “are you going to finally tell me what you were writing so furiously in that notebook of yours?”
Y/N raised an eyebrow as she picked up the menu. “You mean the “mystery notebook” that you keep trying to pry into? Not a chance.”
“Come on,” he said, leaning forward with an exaggerated pout. “You can’t keep a secret forever. Especially not from me.”
Y/N rolled her eyes but couldn’t help laughing. “Nice try. Maybe if you guess right, I’ll tell you.”
“Deal.” Mingyu grinned like he had already won. “But first, what’s your go-to comfort food? And what drinks should we get? I need to know if you’re a pizza or pasta person before it kills me.”
“Depends on the mood,” she said, glancing over the menu. “But tonight? Definitely pasta and red wine. You?”
“Pizza all the way, yes to the wine for sure, I might get white though? Better for the red sauce is what I’ve heard before, not sure if it’s true.” he said confidently. “ But I’m flexible. We can share if you want to try both.”
The waiter had just placed their wine glasses on the table, a rich red for Y/N and a sparkling white for Mingyu, who claimed he wasn’t much of a wine connoisseur but was always up for a little sparkle. As they clinked their glasses, the sound rang out softly, blending into the warm hum of conversation around them.
“To new friends,” Mingyu said with a grin.
“And persistent ones,” Y/N added with a sly smile before taking a sip. The wine was smooth, warming her from the inside as much as the company did.
“So,” Mingyu began, leaning back comfortably in his chair, “tell me something about you I wouldn’t guess just by looking at you.”
Y/N tilted her head, thinking as she swirled the wine in her glass. “Hm,I used to play the cello when I was younger. Like, seriously. Competitions and everything.”
“No way,” Mingyu said, his eyes widening in surprise. “Why don’t you still play?”
“I got too busy with school, life, and, well, other things took over,” she said with a shrug, a touch of wistfulness in her voice. “But it was fun while it lasted. Your turn.”
“Something you wouldn’t guess about me?” Mingyu echoed, rubbing his chin theatrically. “Alright. I once auditioned for a cooking show.”
Y/N’s eyebrows shot up. “Seriously? What happened?”
“Well,” he began, leaning in like he was about to reveal a deep, dark secret, “I made it to the second round. But then I totally botched a dessert challenge because I got the sugar and salt mixed up.”
Y/N burst out laughing, nearly spilling her wine. “Oh no! What were you trying to make?”
“A soufflé,” Mingyu groaned, dramatically slumping in his chair. “I thought I’d be impressive, but instead, I made the world’s saltiest disaster.”
“I would’ve loved to see that,” Y/N said, still laughing. “You’re brave, though. I can barely cook for myself, let alone under pressure.”
“Well, lucky for you, I happen to be a pretty decent cook these days,” Mingyu said with a wink. “Maybe I’ll redeem myself and cook for you sometime.”
Y/N arched an eyebrow but smiled. “We’ll see about that. I’ll be the judge. Ramsay style.”
The conversation naturally shifted as the wine loosened their inhibitions. Y/N talked about her love for old bookstores and how she could lose hours flipping through dusty pages, imagining the lives of people who owned them before. Mingyu shared his obsession with spontaneous road trips, confessing that he once drove five hours just to try a diner he saw on TV.
“You’re kidding,” Y/N said, incredulous but amused. “Was it worth it?”
“Absolutely,” Mingyu said, his eyes lighting up at the memory. “Best blueberry pancakes of my life..”
Y/N shook her head, smiling. “You’re so carefree. I don’t know if I could ever just get up and go like that.”
“Why not?” Mingyu asked, genuinely curious. “Sometimes the best moments are the unplanned ones.”
“Maybe,” she conceded, taking another sip of wine. “But I’m more of a planner. I like knowing what’s ahead.”
“Well,” Mingyu said, his tone playful but with a trace of sincerity, “if you ever feel like throwing the plan out the window, let me know. I’m pretty good at finding adventures.”
Their conversation was momentarily interrupted when the waiter approached with their pizza—a perfectly charred margherita, the thin crust bubbling with golden edges, fresh basil leaves glistening against the vibrant red of the tomato sauce. The aroma alone made Y/N’s stomach rumble, but neither of them reached for a slice right away. Instead, they lingered over their wine, the warm, dim light casting a golden glow over the table as their laughter filled the space between them.
Mingyu leaned back in his chair, his grin wide as he recounted one of his more daring childhood memories. “So, I was about ten, and I decided I was going to build the fucking coolest treehouse in the neighborhood,” he said, gesturing animatedly. “I had this old plank of wood, some rusty nails, and no clue what I was doing, obviously. I climbed up this huge tree in my backyard—like, way higher than I should’ve—and started hammering away. Next thing I know, one of the branches snapped, and there I was, dangling halfway up the tree, screaming for my mom.”
Y/N gasped, covering her mouth with her hand, but the corners of her lips twitched in amusement. “No way. You didn’t fall, did you?”
“No,” Mingyu said, shaking his head dramatically. “But I was stuck for maybe three hours? My mom had to call the neighbors to bring a ladder. And the worst part? My treehouse was just some lame ass piece of wood dangling from the tree like I was. It wasn’t exactly the cool architectural design I pictured.”
Y/N burst out laughing, nearly spilling her wine. “That’s hilarious. I can totally picture you as this ambitious little kid, full of big plans and no backup.”
“Oh, absolutely,” Mingyu said, chuckling. “I had all the ideas but zero execution. What about you? Any wild childhood adventures? Secret missions rather, since you’re a mystery.”
Y/N hesitated for a moment, then her expression softened, a faraway look in her eyes. “You’re a little bit of a smartass, huh? When I was fifteen, I used to sneak out of the house late at night—not to go to parties or anything. I’d climb out my bedroom window and bike to this hill just outside town. It was the perfect spot to stargaze. I’d lie there for hours, just staring at the sky, convinced I was going to be an astronomer one day. And as I got older I still go sometimes, just to have a beer and sit alone, it helps me relax.”
Mingyu’s smile softened, his gaze lingering on her as she spoke. “That sounds really nice actually,” he said, his voice quieter now. “Why astronomy?”
“I think I liked how small it made me feel,” Y/N admitted, swirling her wine glass absently. “Like, no matter how big my problems seemed, they were nothing compared to the universe. Plus, I thought if I studied the stars, maybe I could find some meaning up there. I was always sort of lost as a kid, too shy to make a lot of friends, too terrible at sports to have nobody laughing at me when I would try out for teams, all that.”
“I feel like you’re selling yourself short,” Mingyu said sincerely. “So you still go?”
Y/N shook her head, a wistful smile tugging at her lips. “Not as much anymore. Life got busier, you know? But I think about it sometimes. I miss how peaceful it was.”
“Well,” Mingyu said, leaning forward with a playful glint in his eyes, “next time you want to chase stars, let me know. I think I have a spot you’d like.”
Y/N laughed, raising an eyebrow. “You’d sit in silence under the stars? No smart ass remarks or treehouse stories?”
“Hey, shut up. I can be quiet,” Mingyu defended, though his grin gave him away. “For a little while, at least. But no promises if I see a shooting star. You’re supposed to make a wish, right? Mine would be to bring alcohol and snacks.”
Y/N chuckled, shaking her head as she reached for a slice of pizza at last. “You’re impossible.”
“And yet, here we are,” he teased, raising his glass for another toast. As their glasses clinked again, their laughter and stories spilled over like the wine in their glasses—easy, unhurried, and warm. Mingyu leaned back in his seat, his wine glass balanced loosely in his hand, and gave Y/N a look that was equal parts playful and sincere. “I’m serious, though. You tell me when you want to go stargazing, and I’ll make it happen. Snacks, drinks, blankets—you name it. I’ll even promise to be quiet for the first ten minutes.”
Y/N smirked, taking a small bite of her pizza. “Ten whole minutes of silence? That might actually be a record for you.”
“Don’t push it,” Mingyu shot back with a laugh. “You’d miss my voice too much.”
“Debatable,” she teased, but her smile lingered, softening the edge of her words.
They fell into a comfortable rhythm, their conversation weaving between playful banter and moments of genuine connection. Mingyu asked her more about her writing, his questions thoughtful and encouraging, and Y/N found herself sharing more than she expected—her half-formed ideas, her struggles with self-doubt, and her dream of one day publishing a book that might make someone feel the way she did when she opened a favorite story.
“I feel like you’re already halfway there,” Mingyu said, his tone serious now. “You light up when you talk about it. It’s nice to see you smile talking about something.”
She looked down at her glass, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks. “You make it sound so easy.”
“Maybe it’s not easy,” he admitted, “but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. Besides, if you ever need a cheerleader, I’m available. Very affordable, too—just pay me in pizza.”
Y/N laughed, her nerves dissolving under his earnest encouragement. “I’ll keep that in mind. What about you? What’s your big dream?”
Mingyu hesitated for a moment, tapping his fingers lightly on the table. “Honestly? I think I’m still figuring it out. But I know I want to make people happy, you know? Whether it’s through cooking, making them laugh, or just being there when they need someone. That’s what feels right to me.”
“That’s a pretty great dream,” Y/N said, her voice softening. “And I think you’re already doing it.”
Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, the noise of the restaurant seemed to fade away. Mingyu’s smile turned a little sheepish, and he scratched the back of his neck. “Well, I’m glad to know I’ve got at least one satisfied customer.”
Y/N rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop herself from smiling. “You’re not  terrible company, I guess.”
“High praise,” Mingyu teased, raising his glass again. “To not being terrible company.”
Y/N clinked her glass against his, her laughter mixing with his as they returned to their meal. As the night wore on, the slices slowly disappeared, but the conversation never lost its spark. They lingered long after the plates were cleared, talking about everything from childhood dreams to places they wanted to travel.
Eventually, the waiter discreetly dropped off the check, and Mingyu reached for it without hesitation. “Don’t even think about it,” he said when Y/N protested.
“I could’ve at least split it with you,” she said, crossing her arms.
“You could have,” Mingyu replied with a cheeky grin. “But then I wouldn’t get to say I treated you on our first official hangout. You can cover the snacks for stargazing—deal?”
Y/N sighed, shaking her head with a smile. “Deal.”
As they stepped out into the crisp night air, the city lights casting a soft glow on the streets, Mingyu turned to her. “So, was I as annoying as you thought I’d be?”
“Annoying? Yes,” Y/N said, her lips twitching in amusement. “But I don’t mind.”
“I’ll take it,” Mingyu said with a laugh. “Thanks for tonight, Y/N. It was probably one of the most fun things I’ve done in a while.”
“It was,” she admitted, surprised by how much she meant it. “See you tomorrow, persistent coffee guy?”
“Oh, you’ll see me,” he said, winking before turning to head down the street. “Unless I see you first, Mysterious Corner Person.”
Y/N watched him walk away, a warmth settling in her chest. As she started toward home, she couldn’t help but smile, already looking forward to their next meeting.
As the dawn broke, the soft glow of the morning sun streamed through the windows of the café, casting a warm hue over everything. Y/N sat at her usual corner spot, absently scrolling through her phone while waiting for her favorite annoying friend. The comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sound of light chatter and the clinking of cups. She hadn’t quite managed to shake off the memory of last night—Mingyu's laughter, the way his eyes sparkled when he spoke, and the lingering warmth of their conversation.
Just as she checked her watch to see if Mingyu had been late or not, she heard the tinkle of the doorbell, drawing her attention. In walked Mingyu, a wide grin plastered on his face, walking up to grab two steaming cups of coffee in his hands. Y/N’s heart did a little flip; she couldn't help but smile back as he approached her with the casual confidence that always made her stomach flutter.
“I brought you your favorite,” he said, placing the cup in front of her. “Consider this an apology for being too charming last night. I didn’t mean to sweep you off your feet or anything.” The teasing lilt in his voice made Y/N chuckle, though she rolled her eyes playfully, masking the warmth tinting her cheeks.
“Too charming, huh? Is that even a thing?” she shot back, taking a sip and savoring the familiar taste. With every interaction, she found herself drawn deeper into the lighthearted banter they had cultivated. He sat down across from her, his playful nature washing away any remnants of a serious morning.
As days turned into weeks, those spontaneous coffee runs became the highlight of Y/N's mornings. Each day, Mingyu would find a new reason to linger—asking about her weekend plans, recounting strange dreams that had caused him to wake up giggling, or debating the merits of pineapple on pizza. There were moments when their conversations would drift into deeper territory, discussing their aspirations, fears, and the odd twists life threw their way.
Y/N soon discovered that Mingyu had an uncanny ability to make even the most mundane topics feel important. One Tuesday, as they squabbled over the best pizza toppings, he insisted, “Peppers and onions bring out the true flavor of the cheese!” which led to an impromptu debate that had them both laughing until their sides hurt.
She found herself anticipating these morning rituals, a bubble of happiness blossoming in her chest at the mere thought of seeing him. What started as a casual coffee run had morphed into something undeniably special—she began to crave his company more than she cared to admit.
Despite her attempts to play it cool, every shared laugh, every gently lingering gaze exchanged started to intertwine their lives in ways she hadn’t expected. Each day, the corner café felt a little more like a second home, not just because of the coffee, but because of Mingyu’s presence. Occasionally, she’d catch herself daydreaming about what it would be like to invite him over for a pizza night or to share a quiet evening watching movies, a little voice in her head whispering fears of slipping from friendship into something deeper—something beautiful yet terrifying.
But for now, they relished the simplicity—the easy comfort of shared coffee, laughter, and the exhilarating thrill of something unspoken hanging softly between them, waiting for the right moment to blossom.
After weeks of easy laughter and coffee-filled mornings, Mingyu—emboldened by Y/N's growing fondness for their time together—decided it was time to showcase his culinary prowess. He had mentioned his love for cooking during one of their coffee chats, specifically teasing about a past cooking show attempt that had ended in disaster when he mistakenly used salt instead of sugar in a dessert. It was an absolute failure, but the way he recounted it had left Y/N in stitches, and she couldn’t help but encourage him to put that experience behind him.
So it was with a mischievous smile that Mingyu sent her a message inviting her over to his place for a “proper meal.” His confidence was infectious, and Y/N found herself excited at the prospect of spending an evening cooking together, even if she glimpsed a little fear behind her excitement.
That Saturday evening, Y/N arrived at his apartment with a spring in her step, holding a bottle of wine as her contribution to the dinner. Mingyu greeted her at the door, a cute apron tied around his waist, and his hair slightly tousled as if he had been preparing all day. The kitchen already smelled inviting, with the simmering of something savory in the background.
“Welcome to my kitchen.” he declared, flinging open his arms in mock grandeur. “Prepare to be blown away.” Y/N giggled, feeling a playful banter already brewing between them as they stepped into the kitchen.
They started a little unsure, mixing up ingredients and dancing around each other in the small space. Laughter filled the air as he guided her through the preparation of their meal. Chopping vegetables turned into a chopping competition, resulting in some accidentally discarded pieces flying across the countertop. They were both a bit clumsy, but it only added to the charm of the evening.
However, chaos ensued as Y/N intentionally mixed up the sugar and salt while measuring the ingredients for the sauce. As a callback to make fun of Mingyu’s cooking show embarrassment hoping he wouldn’t take it to heart too much.
Mingyu’s face morphed from confusion to pure horror as he tasted the sauce. “What is this? Are you fucking with me?” he exclaimed, trying to keep a straight face but failing miserably, a burst of laughter erupting between them.
“Hey, I thought we could give you a call back to your days as an aspiring chef. You were just telling me to ‘add seasoning’!” Y/N retorted, her laughter bubbling over.
The kitchen transformed into a battleground of flour and spills as they attempted to clean up the mess, dashing here and there grabbing paper towels and laughing uncontrollably as they dodged flour clouds that seemed intent on sticking to every surface—including themselves. The floor bore witness to a sprinkling of flour footprints leading from sink to counter and back.
“Okay, okay. Clearly, we’re not going to win a Michelin star tonight,” Mingyu chuckled, wiping a hand across his forehead, flour now dusting his cheek.
“Maybe we should just clean up and order takeout? Sorry for fucking up your nice meal” Y/N suggested with a grin, realizing neither of them had even started on the main course yet.
“I have a feeling this was your plan all along, think I’m going to poison you?” He nodded enthusiastically.
“Absolutely.”
They huddled over his phone, browsing menus and sharing a laugh about different food combinations, all the while enjoying the relaxed comfort of each other’s company. As they placed their order, Mingyu playfully bemoaned the “greatest culinary disaster of the century,” and Y/N couldn’t help but tease him about his cooking abilities.
When the food finally arrived, they sat down on the couch, a jumble of takeout containers and mismatched plates, laughter still dancing in the air. They dug in, enjoying their food with a warmth that stemmed not just from the flavors but from the shared experience that had turned their simple dinner into pure chaos, followed by comfort as their legs touched settled into his cozy sofa, which they both pretended not to acknowledge.
In between bites, their conversation flowed easily, the earlier chaos of the kitchen forgotten, only to be replaced by gentle teasing and heartfelt discussions. The evening had not gone as planned, yet in those moments, Y/N felt a closeness to Mingyu that she hadn't fully anticipated and wasn’re sure what it meant.
As they polished off the last of their takeout, they leaned back against the couch, feeling the loosening tension from the day, laughter still bubbling between them. She glanced at him, his face lit up with a satisfied grin, and realized that this was far more memorable than if everything had gone perfectly. The spilled flour and overly salty sauce had become their personal anecdotes, stories to reminisce about, etched into their growing relationship.
And even amid the mess, she felt something shift—this was more than just a casual evening; it was a bond that deepened with every laugh shared and every slight mistake made together. In the cozy warmth of the moment, Y/N found herself contemplating just how right it felt to be here with Mingyu.
“Do you-”
They both said at the same time, their laughter flowing still. Y/n prompted Mingyu to talk first, grabbing the can of sweating beer sitting on his coffee table and taking a swig.
“No, just do you ever think about how crazy it is that we met each other?” Mingyu watched y/n's expression as if she was a television character. “We were strangers a few weeks ago and now here we are, I feel like I’ve known you my whole life.”
Y/N felt a warmth bloom in her chest at his words, a flutter of something electric that made her heart race. Swallowing her sip of beer, she considered his question, the implications of it wrapping around her like a blanket. “It is sort of crazy,” she replied softly, leaning back against the couch and crossing her arms as she reflected on their journey. “Just a few weeks ago, we were two random people in a coffee shop, sharing awkward small talk over our drinks.”
Mingyu chuckled, his laughter warm and inviting, causing Y/N to smile at the memory. “Right? I remember how you tried to hide your eye roll when I started rambling about my guilty pleasure shows. You've been way more patient with my quirks than I deserve.”
“Hey, you didn’t have to twist my arm to talk about junk food and reality TV. That’s a gift you offered me,” she replied, nudging him playfully with her elbow. “But seriously, I don’t know. It just feels almost too easy with you.”
He nodded, the sincerity on his face deepening. “Absolutely. I had this fear that after my cooking show mishap, I’d never cook for anyone ever again. But, somehow, I feel comfortable with you. Like I can be myself—flour-covered and all..
“I get that.” she replied, her heart still racing from the way his eyes searched hers, filled with an openness that was rarely offered. “It’s everything—our late-night talks about nothing and everything, all those moments and I like that I don’t feel pressure to impress you.”
Mingyu’s gaze softened as he let her words sink in, a smile spreading across his face—a mix of relief and happiness. “I feel the same way. I guess it’s nice to find someone who can appreciate you for who you are, flaws and all.”
“I thought you didn’t have any flaws?”
The atmosphere shifted slightly, a gentle gravity settling around them as they shared this moment of vulnerability. It felt like the world outside had faded away, leaving only the sacred space between them filled with thoughtful breaths and unspoken words.
Then, suddenly, Mingyu leaned a little closer, his elbow resting on his knee as he caught her gaze with an intensity that made her heart flutter even more. “You know… I think the best part about getting to know you is discovering how we both navigate our own messiness. We’re both a little chaotic in our own ways, and it’s refreshing to find someone else who can embrace that.”
Y/N felt her cheeks heat up as Mingyu’s honesty wrapped around her like warmth. She knew that beneath the laughter and playful teasing, he was speaking to something significant happening between them. “It’s like we balance each other out, right? Your zero flaws perfectly complement my complete lack of many. ”
He threw his head back in laughter, and it vibrated through them both like a comforting echo. Touching her thigh out of instinct.
Mingyu’s expression shifted then, his eyes earnest yet playful as he leaned in closer, robes of laughter giving way to something deeper. “Okay, but in all seriousness—what do you think happens next for us? I mean, if we keep this up?”
Y/N swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his question, a mixture of excitement and vulnerability swirling in her chest. Tilting her head slightly, she studied his face, a thought bubbling to the surface that she hadn’t articulated before. “I guess we keep figuring it out. I know that’s a lame ass answer, but-”
Mingyu’s face brightened, and he nodded enthusiastically. “We’ll have takeout nights, of course—maybe even attempt cooking again when we’re feeling bold.”
“Yes. But with a solid plan in place this time,” she teased, her heart warming at his enthusiasm. “whatever this is.”
“Whatever this is,” he echoed with a soft smile, stretching his arm out along the back of the couch, leaving just enough space for her to lean against him if she wanted to. The gesture lingered in the air, an invitation that made her pulse quicken.
Taking a deep breath, Y/N felt a wave of courage washing over her. She shifted closer, rationally giving way to instinct, and in that moment of intimacy, she let herself lean against him, their bodies fitting together effortlessly.
“And I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” she murmured softly, feeling a profound shift in their dynamic as she nestled against Mingyu’s side. Warmth enveloped her, not just from his body, but from the genuine connection they had forged. She took her hands to his warm cheeks and brushed off the lingering flour, running her fingers over his soft lips.
Mingyu’s arm instinctively draped around her shoulders, holding her close, and she felt an undeniable sense of belonging in his presence. “You can’t be this close to me and not kiss me.” he replied quietly, and she could hear the sincerity in his voice, the gravity of their shared moment.
As she stared at him in silence for a minute, a smile washed over her face as she leaned in and made a path to his lips with hers instead at the last minute swerving and giving him a kiss on the cheek playfully.
Laughter bubbled between them, lightening the tension that had built in the air. Mingyu looked momentarily surprised, his eyes widening and brows raising in mock disappointment. “Oh, come on. That was a dick move.”
Y/N giggled, the sound of a playful melody that danced around them in the cozy space. “I couldn’t help it. The look on your face was so worth it.” She winked mischievously, enjoying how their moment, which had felt so heavy and charged just seconds before, had shifted into this playful teasing.
Mingyu chuckled, shaking his head in playful disbelief. “You’re so mean.” He feigned frustration, but the warmth of his expression and the sparkle in his eyes told her just how much he enjoyed her whimsy.
Pride swelled within her at his compliment, and her cheeks flushed at the spontaneity of it all. They were sharing this beautiful blend of fun and intimacy—a carefree-ness that made her heart flutter and her stomach twist into knots of anticipation. She hesitated for a moment, still wrapped in the warmth of his presence, contemplating allowing the moment to settle in further.
“Okay, okay… I’ll redeem myself,” she said softly, meeting his gaze with a hint of seriousness beneath her earlier teasing. The shift in her tone caught his attention, and his playful expression faded slightly, replaced with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.
“Are you sure?” Mingyu asked, his voice low and filled with a vulnerability that made her heart ache in the best way.
Y/N bit her lip, feeling the boldness wash over her again, surpassing any lingering nerves. “I am,” she assured him, her heart hammering as she leaned in closer this time, matching his gaze as they hovered just inches apart. “I guess we’ve come too far to hold back now, right?”
“Right,” he breathed, his eyes darkening with something primal, something that sent a shiver of excitement coursing through her. The air between them felt charged, electric, as if they were daring each other to bridge the final distance.
In one swift movement, she closed the small gap, finally pressing her lips against his in a soft, tentative kiss. It was gentle at first, teetering on the edge of hesitation, but as Mingyu responded—his lips molding to hers with a warmth she'd yearned for.
Time seemed to blur around them as they savored the kiss, allowing the moment to expand, realizing that this was a milestone in their relationship. Y/N’s heart raced as she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck, drawing him closer still; she could feel the way he leaned into her, matching her eagerness. Each touch ignited sparks, tossing her into a whirlwind of longing that was both intoxicating and exhilarating.
When they finally pulled back, breathless, she leaned her forehead against his, her heart racing from the tenderness that hung in the air between them. Mingyu’s eyes were bright, reflecting the disbelief and joy of their shared moment. “Wow.”
“Yeah?” she asked softly, a shy smile breaking across her face. “Because, I’d say it was mediocre.”
The lightness returned, and Mingyu laughed, the sound lifting her spirits even more. “Shut up, you’re a liar, you were basically begging me for more. ”
“I might need another later, just so you can redeem yourself.”
“I can make that happen, you know.”
They grinned at each other, a shared understanding deepening their connection even further. The world outside felt like an echo, distant and unimportant as they savored this newfound bond, filled with untapped potential and the joy of each other’s company.
“Can you imagine what our friends would say if they knew we spent the night making a mess and then ended with a make-out session?” Mingyu said, his laughter still dancing in the air.
Y/N shook her head, chuckling softly. “Who knows? They might be incredibly jealous we got to have missed out on our “disaster” of an evening. But honestly, I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
“Me neither,” he replied, his tone shifting back to sincerity. “But just so you know, I’m claiming the next time we cook together you just sit and watch.”
“And why is that?” Y/N asked, raising an eyebrow in playful skepticism, her heart dancing at his enthusiasm.
“So I can look sexy for you in the kitchen and you might kiss me again, obviously.” he declared dramatically.
Y/N couldn’t help but laugh, her heart swelling with affection for his silliness. “Alright, chef. You have yourself a deal. But next time? I’m bringing dessert.”
“Maybe I’ll just have you for dessert.” Mingyu said with a teasing grin, and she felt her cheeks flush once again in delight.
With that playful banter, the rest of the night melted away into easy laughter, light touches, and the thrill of new beginnings. She felt something incredible blooming between them, something beautiful that blended friendship with a newfound romantic spark, and she couldn’t wait to see where their journey might take them next.
As they settled back on the couch, Y/N nestled against him once more, content with the knowledge that whatever chaos life threw their way, they would tackle it together—with laughter, love, and perhaps a little less clothes involved.

OH! MY MISTAKE | where you can’t for the life of you, remember to call kozume by his first name.
Tumblr media
♫ — currently playing... april

pairing – kenma x gn!reader
wordcount – 1094
a/n – hi guys !! hope u enjoyy lmk if u do! also this is mot proofread so sorry if its wordy or theres any typos!
Tumblr media
kenma isn’t the kind to make many mistakes.
there are times where he’s bound to make mistakes, like when he’s out of breath and messes up his sets a little, or when he’s been playing a game for too long and too many people are talking and the pixels are moving too fast for his brain.
those are the times where he can make the excuse if that he’s too tired. but even then, he still realizes his mistake.
when you first meet him he can tell you’re the shy type. he’s not stupid after all.
he can see you fidget with anything you can latch you hands on as you're introducing yourself to the team individually.
coach nekomata has that same happy smile that he always displays. he can see you constantly look back at him for reassurance.
when you finally approach him he skips to the most important part. he doesn’t care for the formalities, and he is sure you don't care about the wellbeing of every single person on the team.
“you can just call me by my first name, kenma.”
you were taken aback by his abruptness, you hadn’t even had the opportunity to bow before he introduced himself. his face remained a monotone look, it didn’t seem like he cared for you at all.
“oh—okay! what’s your last name, if you don’t mind me asking?”
he is simply oblivious to you, so he says, “it’s kozume, but i don’t like when people call me it. so kenma is fine with me.”
“it’s nice to meet you, kenma-san. it’s an honor to be the manager this year!” you salute to him, he can sense that every bone of your body is tense, and you’re too nervous for your own good.
“it’s nice meeting you,” he pauses, then adds,”don’t take this position too seriously, you’re new, it’s okay to make mistakes and not know things.”
he figures you’re the type to need reassurance on matters like that, he almost adds that you can come to him for help, but it might’ve come off in a different way. which was the opposite of what he wanted.
a warm smile blesses your face as you nod vigorously, barely getting out a “thank you!” before he walks away.
a small smile adorns his face when he turns around while he’s so blissfully unaware of his fatal mistake.
it’s at the next practice when he first notices it.
he’s out of the locker room first as usual. sliding down the wall, he sits down a foot away from you. you’re focused on something that he isn’t sure what.
you shift in your position, quickly casting a look at him before whipping your head back.
he sees you scribbling hard on the paper, then erasing it even harder. it’s when you let out a sigh when he decides to step in.
“are you okay, y/n? do you need help with anything?”
he usually wouldn’t help anyone else, but you’re next to him already, he tells himself.
“oh! hi kozume-san! no i’m okay—just finishing this sudoku puzzle my friend gave me!”
“i told you to call me kenma, i don’t like formalities like that.”
you can feel your cheeks heating up, as you awkwared cover them with your hand you exclaim, “i’m so sorry kozu-kenma! i’ll call you that from now on!”
“it’s okay y/n. just don’t forget next time, okay?”
you agree immediately, and it works for the next couple of hours. until he makes another mistake.
he’s on the floor before he knows it, he can hear the ball slam on the floor, but he can’t ignore the throbbing pain shooting through his body.
his ankle seems to look fine, but he knows he landed wrong after jumping for the ball. he takes his ankle and massages it, it doesn’t do much but he continues to do it anyways.
he can hear a group of footsteps run to him, but his vision seems to be tunneled.
throughout the many voices he can hear yours, loud and clear. “kozume! are you okay?”
he looks up at you, “kenma.”
the team all looks at him in confusion, a few mutters of people calling him delirious.
but you, you immediately get it, your cheeks turn a slight pink shade as you offer him a helping hand.
“sorry kenma! i’ll take you to the nurse now.” he gladly takes your hand. wanting to feel the softness of it forever, but you let go once he’s up.
everyone watches as he wraps his arm around your shoulder and limps to the door, once you’re at it you look back and yell. “me and kozume-san will be back soon! so keep practicing everyone!”
it’s been four months, but still you can’t seem to get over your habit.
many things have changed over the past few months, one being that you and kenma have been dating for two of those months.
though that habit seemed to stick with you even as time went on.
“kozume!” you exclaim, wrapping your arms around him.
a small chuckle escapes his lips, he wraps his arms around you. “you’re still forgetting to call me kenma, y/n.”
“old habits die hard,” you giggle, “oh! also—you’re late for practice! tetsurou was spamming your phone with calls, did you forget?”
over time, you’ve grown much more comfortable with him, as he had with you. even though at the time his ankle seemed to be the worse thing that ever happened to him, it also happened to be the catalyst of your relationship.
he’s grateful for landing wrong fore without that small flap of a butterflies wing, he wouldn’t have memorized the shape of your lips, or the sound of your laugh, or the small moles adorning your face.
“wait—tetsurou?”
you let out a breathy laugh, “yeah he told me to call him by his first name! you don’t mind, do you?”
“you remembered to say his first name but not mine?”
“kodzu-ken i mean. i think kozume is cute! it rolls off the tongue better. i’m sorry!” you raise your hands in defeat, but he’s already walking ahead of you to practice.
you chase after him, “kodzu—kenma wait!”
planting a kiss on his cheek, you take his hand, skipping happily to practice dragging him behind.
“kozume skip with me!”
“i’m not doing that.”
kenma hates the formality of when someone calls him kozume instead of kenma, but with the way his name sounds when you say it, he can’t find it in himself to mind.

this fanfic is inspired by Lana Del Rey’s unreleased song “Boarding School”
please excuse any typos you might see :,)
I really hope that y’all will enjoy this <3
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚
You recently found out that you were going to a new boarding school.
Your parents sent you off to a new one since in your previous school, you had problems with some girls. You didn’t really wanna to go to a new school since you have kind of settled in in your old one, but you didn’t have a choice.
It was your first day in the new boarding school. An only-girls school. The moment you stepped in some teachers showed you your new room and you had to share it with another girl. It was pink and baby blue. Your bed had some bows around it and overall it was a really pretty room. After settling in you decided to go check out the rest of the school. Since it was the first day and there were no lessons today.
You were wearing your school uniform, a white shirt, a red tie, a pair of white thigh socks, black shoes and your red pleaded skirt. You look so pretty. You start walking around the corridors of the school, checking out the new classrooms and everything. You were not watching where you were going at some point when all of a sudden you accidentally fell onto someone. You looked up to the person. It was a teacher. You embarrassedly looked up to him and started apologising.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, sir, I was not watching where I
was going..!”
You really felt embarrassed after this…
He warmly smiled and looked down to you.
“Oh, don’t even worry about it, it’s fine!”
You were so embarrassed and looked down,
then he said
“Are you a new student? It’s the first day of school today and I haven’t seen you before here.”
You looked up to him and smiled
“Yes! I am a new student! I just came this morning. My name is y/n..”
“What a nice name…”
he replied.
“Have they assigned you with a class? I think it’s on the papers that they gave you when you arrived here this morning.”
Your eyes widen, realising that you do not know in which class you actually are.
“Oh, I forgot to actually check it… silly me..”
You say and laugh awkwardly.
“Well, I’d suggest that you actually go check it out because the lessons start tomorrow and I don’t think that you would like to lose one of your classes right?”
He says and winks at you.
You instantly blush..
He’s a teacher, and he’s already making you feel so…so.. hot..? You couldn’t explain it, but you were feeling things.
You give him a smile and walk back to your room.
The next day you wake up and check out in which class you are. The papers say C1.
You get dressed, eat breakfast and fix your schoolbag. Then you head out to your lesson.
You walk in the class and sit in the front seat. After a while you hear the door of the classroom open and your new teacher walks in. It’s the same teachers from the corridors yesterday. The moment this happens is when you realise that he never actually told you his name.
Then, he sits in front of everyone in the class and says
“Good morning everyone, I’ll be your new philosophy teacher for the year.. I am Anakin Skywalker, but you can call me Mr Skywalker. I also do tutoring lessons in case everyone has problems with philosophy, so could you always can count on me.”
he says and smiles. I look up to him and smile too. He notices me and winks playfully. I feel a wave of amusement and embarrassment wash over me. He’s my teacher and feel like that about him, but he’s already so nice to me and sweet, you said to yourself.
Days pass pretty fast. You’ve started your school year in a really good mood. You love your new philosophy teacher more than any other teachers. Whenever you see him, you talk to him and you guys have really good conversations. One day decide to finally take the step and ask him if he can tutor you.
After class, you walked up to him.
“Excuse me Mr Skywalker….from what I remember on our first lesson you said to us and we can ask you for help with tutoring.. I’ve been wanting to ask you for awhile about it, but I was just too shy I guess..”
You say, and laugh anxiously.
He gave you a warm smile and replied
“Of course…plus you are the only student who actually asked for me to tutor them, so whenever you feel like it let me know.We can arrange the days and all.. oh and I have some free time right now. We could sit here, on this class, if you would like me to help you out with anything hmm?”
you smiled in excitement.
“Oh yes absolutely! I do have some free time right now… and I would love it if you could help me right now..”
You said and giggled.
You guys start studying together. He’s a really good tutor. Without realising it, hours have passed..
Anakin takes off his glasses and smiles, while looking at you.
“I don’t get why you want me to tutor you… you are so good..”
He smiled once again.
You put a strand of your hair behind your ear and reply to him.
“Honestly…sir… I don’t really feel like it.. I mean I do try my best, but it feels like I need more help.. but I really appreciate the way you speak to me and the way you help me with anything… thank you sir”
He’s sitting right next to you with his hand on the desk while looking at you.. you guys are so close.. your lips are so close to each other..
just as you guys are so close to kissing he moves a bit away..
“The time has passed fast huh..? Perhaps you better if you went back to your dorm doll.. it’s getting late..”
you smile, awkwardly and reply
“Oh yes sir, you’re absolutely right… I will head back to my dorm.. and thank you… for today.. I’d like to do that more often..”
You leave the classroom.
After an while you’re back in your dorm.
You sit by the window and check out the view outside of the building. As you check out the trees, you watch your teacher under a tree, smoking a cigarette. You keep looking at him. And that is the moment you realise that you actually feel much more things about your teacher… you start noticing how hot he is when he smoking… the way he pushes his hair back, out of his face… the way he fixes his glasses.. it’s all so..attractive…
You didn’t care that you felt like that in the first place, you just wanted him.. so bad..
Days pass once again. He keeps on tutoring you. You guys get much closer than expected.
You are talking about more personal matters which leads both of you into realising that you are actually much similar than you thought..
The following week, you two decided to have a lesson much later that day. When nobody was walking around the classrooms and you had more privacy.
After an hour into the lesson, you guys are so close again…this time you felt like you needed to do that… you couldn’t resist, and as your lips were so close…You just leaned closer and kissed him..
He did not break the kiss. Instead, he put his hands on your waist as you were sitting in the chair and kissed you more. Then he set you on the desk and kept kissing you as his hands traveled around your body.
“I’ve been wanting this for so long doll… I’ve been wanting you for so long…”
He exclaims.
You couldn’t believe it.
You wanted him in the exact same way.
You stop the kiss and look up to him once again
“I’ve been wanting that too.. I want you here..right now, take me here..!”
You exclaimed. He smirked and laughed quietly.
Adrenaline washed over you.
He lifted your skirt as you were laying on the desk. Then he moved your panties to the side.
“And those pretty pink panties that you are wearing… such a shame that they are gonna be ruined by me baby..”
he starts fingering you
You keep moaning with your hand covering your mouth. Trying to be as quiet as possible..
After a while of prepping you.. he enters you.
He moves slowly.
“Baby? I’m gonna try to be gentle, okay? Tell me if anything hurts, hmm?”
you shake your head and smile warmly.
You spent the whole night getting pounded on a desk by your philosophy teacher.
After you guys finished, Anakin kissed your cheek and smiled
“You did so good for me doll..”
Turns out that the boarding school will be fun <3

MONACO
The sound of clashing blades echoed through the halls of the Club d’Escrime, a backdrop to your training session with Marco, your Italian coach. Fully suited in your white fencing uniform, mask tucked under your arm, you watched the double doors open, revealing your brother, Charles and his videographer, Antoine. The latter already had his camera rolling, and Charles, in his usual casual style—jeans, a dark hoodie, and white sneakers, looking like he had just stepped off a magazine cover.
“Finally!” You said, walking towards them with a smile. “Thought you’d never make it.”
Charles chuckled, spreading his arms in mock exasperation. “Don’t start! You’re the one who’s always impossible to catch. What is it this week? Tokyo? Budapest?”
“Home, for once,” you replied with a laugh, gesturing around the salle. “But that’s rare, as you know.”
“The place is very stunning,” Charles said, as he marveled the interior of the salle. “So this is where gold medals are made?” He teased.
“Something like that,” you replied, your voice light with pride. “Though Marco here deserves half the credit.”
“Ah, Charles! Finalmente ci incontriamo,” Marco greeted, shaking Charles’ hand firmly. His thick Italian accent added a charm to his words. “Your sister talks about you a lot.”
“È un piacere finalmente conoscerti. Lei non parla mai di me quando vinco, però.” He joked, shooting a playful look your way.
“Not true, and you know it.” You rolled your eyes at the comment.
Marco laughed, patting Charles on the shoulder. “Well today, we’ll see if athletic talent runs in the family, sì?”
“Okay, so here we are at the Club d’Escrime in Monaco. This is where my sister trains—when she’s not winning Olympic gold, of course,” he said grinning at you and turning towards the camera.
“We’ve been planning this fencing lesson for many months now, but with her busy training schedule and my racing calendar, it’s been almost impossible to find a day that worked for both of us. So finally, today is the day!” Charles added.
“Did you mention how excited you’ve been?” You quipped, folding your arms.
Charles smirked. “I may have. But, let’s be honest, you’re probably more nervous than I am.”
“Nervous?” You scoffed. “Why would I be nervous? You’re the one holding a weapon for the first time.”
“Ah, but I’ve seen the movies,” he countered, mimicking a clumsy lunge. “How hard can it be?”
You laughed at his theatrics, shaking your head. “We’ll see how long that confidence lasts when Marco puts you through the warm-up.”
“Speaking of which,” Marco interjected, “shall we start soon? Time is short, and I want to see if he can last more than five minutes.”
“You’re in for a workout.” You teased and smiled.
Charles gave an exaggerated sigh but could not hide his amusement. “Great. I love being underestimated.”
“You’re about to learn that fencing isn't as easy as people make it look on TV.” You smiled at the camera.
“Or tiktok.” Charles quipped, earning a chuckle from Marco.
You gestured towards the piste. “Alright, let’s get you geared up. I don’t want to hear any excuses later.”
Once Charles was all suited up, he stepped onto the piste, fully suited in his borrowed fencing gear, and you couldn’t help but pause. There was something striking about the way the jacket, breeches, and long socks suited him. The silver sheen of the lamé, a metallic vest worn over the jacket for scoring, added an almost regal touch. You smirked as you took in the sight of your brother adjusting his gloves.
“Oh my god. I’ve never looked so good.” Charles said as he came out all suited up.
“Would you look at that,” you began, folding your arms. “Hate to admit it, but you look good. Maybe too good.”
Charles glanced up, clearly amused. “Oh? Surprised your brother cleans up well?”
“I’m just saying, if this racing thing doesn’t work out, you might have a future as a fencer. Imagine, Charles Leclerc, Olympic Champion.” You gave him an exaggerated once-over. “The gear suits you.”
“I mean, I do look the part.” He smiled, striking a mock fencing pose, which was more comedic than impressive.
“You do,” you admitted with a laugh. “But let’s see if you can move like a fencer before you start planning your second career.”
“Basta con i complimenti. Time for the warm-up! No excuses later when your legs start complaining.” Marco smiled.
Charles groaned playfully, shooting you a mock glare. “Leg day already gets me in the gym. Don’t let him overdo it.”
“Stop whining,” you teased, motioning for him to follow Marco. “You’ll thank him when you’re not limping tomorrow.”
“We begin easy,” he said, demonstrating a forward bend. “Touch your toes, Charles. Keep your legs straight.”
“Easy for you to say,” he muttered, glancing at Marco, who was effortlessly folding himself in half.
“Come on, Charlie. You can’t lose to a guy twenty years older than you.” You chuckled from the sidelines, standing near Antoine, who was filming the entire thing.
“Thanks for the encouragement,” Charles quipped, finally managing to graze his toes. “I see you’re enjoying this too much.”
“I am.” You admitted, voice light with laughter.
Next were lunges, which Charles did with ease, his form surprisingly precise. “Now these, I can handle. We do this in the gym all the time.”
“Good. Now arm extensions, long and controlled. Think of reaching for the target.” Charles mirrored Marco’s movements, extending his arms fluidly.
You couldn’t resist teasing, “not bad, Charles. Maybe you’re a natural after all.”
“Maybe I am,” he replied, smirking. “See? I’ve got this.”
“Next is jumping jacks,” Marco interrupted, clearly amused by your banter.
Charles transitioned smoothly into the exercise, his movements energetic and practiced. As he worked through the routine, Charles suddenly turned to you, his tone curious.
“Why don’t we ever train together? Seems like it could be fun.” Charles glanced at you.
“Because you’d complain the whole time.” You laughed, shaking your head.
“Hey, I don’t complain that much.” He argued, clearly offended.
You just laughed at him, waving a hand dismissively. “Fencing is my thing, Charlie. I need to focus when I’m training, it’s not all fun and games.”
“And today isn’t serious?” Charles raised a brow, pausing mid-jumping jack.
“Not really,” you admitted with a shrug. “Today’s more about proving to you that fencing isn’t as easy as it looks.”
“Good luck with that,” he said, clearly amused. “You forget who you’re talking to.”
“Charles,” Marco interjected, a mischievous glint in his eye, “your sister has a gold medal, she might surprise you.”
“I don’t doubt that,” he said sincerely, before his grin returned. “But I’m still confident I can keep up.”
“That’s the spirit!” You smiled.
”The floor is yours, campionessa.” Marco smiled as he stepped back, and gestured for you to take over.
“Alright,” you turned to Charles. “Let’s start with the basics. This is going to be your crash course in fencing, everything you need to know before you touch the blade.”
Antoine, still filming, zoomed in on Charles’ face as he nodded, looking serious. “I’m ready, let’s hear it.”
“Fencing is one of the oldest sports in the world. It dates back centuries, originally used in dueling and combat training, but over time, it became more of a sport.” You explained. “In fact, fencing has been part of the Olympics since the very first modern games in 1896.”
“1896?” Charles repeated, very intrigued. “So, it’s been around forever.”
“Pretty much,” you confirmed with a smile. “Since then, it’s evolved into three distinct disciplines—foil, sabre, and epee. Each had different rules, strategies, and weapons. That’s what makes fencing so fascinating, you’re not just swinging a sword around. It’s a mind game as much as a physical one, that’s why some call it physical chess.”
Charles tilted his head, clearly interested. “What’s the difference between the three?”
“Come on, let me show you guys.” You walked over to a nearby rack, where several swords were neatly displayed, each one gleaming under the salle’s lights.
“This is a foil.” You picked up a foil, you held it up for him and the viewers to see. “It is the lightest of the three weapons, weighing about 500 grams, and the one I use. Foil fencing focuses on precision and technique, the target area is only the torso, and points are scored with the tip of the blade.”
Charles reached out, and you handed him the foil. He tested the weight of the blade, lifting and lowering it.
“It’s lighter than I thought.” He admitted, giving it a small swing.
“Foils are meant for agility and speed,” you explained. You then picked up a sabre, slightly heavier with a distinct curved guard. “This is a sabre. It’s a bit heavier, and the rules are very different. In sabre, you can score with the edge of the blade, not just the tip, and target area is the upper body—above the waist, including arms and head.”
“Sounds aggressive,” Charles remarked, running his hand along the blade’s flat edge.
“Oh, it is,” you chuckled. “Sabre is all about speed and attack. It’s fast-paced, almost like a sprint compared to foil’s more calculated, chess-like style.”
“And the last one?” Charles asked, pointing to the remaining weapon.
“This is the epee,” you said as you picked up the epee, handing it to him. “It’s the heaviest of the three, about 775 grams, and the target area is the entire body, head to toe. But in epee, there’s no right of way, whoever hits first, scores.”
Charles tested the epee in his grip, nodding thoughtfully. “So it’s more…straightforward?”
“In a way, yes,” you said, setting the sabre and foil back on the rack. “But it can also lead to longer matches since there’s no restriction on who can attack when, you need all the patience you can get when playing epee.”
The camera panned as you gestured for Charles to follow you back to the piste. “Now, let’s talk about the rules. In foil, which is what we’ll be learning today, the target area is just the torso. No arms, legs, and head. If you hit anywhere else, it doesn’t count.”
“Got it,” Charles said. “What about the scoring?”
“In foil, we use something called right of way. It means that the fencer who initiates the attack has priority. If the other fencer wants to score, they have to defend or parry first, and then counterattack.”
You picked up a foil and demonstrated, lunging forward in a quick, fluid motion. “For example, if I attack you like this, you can’t just hit me back. You’d need to block my blade first.”
“So, it’s not just about being faster, it’s about timing.” Charles frowned slightly, absorbing the information.
“Yup,” you said, impressed. “It’s about strategy and reading your opponent’s moves. Now, there are also some practical rules. The piste, the one we are standing on right now, is 14 meters long and 1.5 to 2 meters wide. If you step off, you lose ground or even a point, and you can’t use your off-hand to block, and obviously, no overly aggressive moves like charging into your opponent.”
Charles raised a brow. “No tackling allowed? Shame.”
“Not unless you want to get a penalty.” You laughed, shaking your head. “Lastly, to win a match, you have to reach a predetermined number of points, usually 15, or have the highest score by the end of the time limit.”
“Okay, I’ll give you a quick demonstration of how right of way works in a tournament.” You gestured for Marco to join you, and he grabbed another foil, stepping into position, as Antoine adjusted his camera as you stepped back onto the piste.
“Watch closely,” you instructed as you and Marco faced off. “Marco will attack, and I’ll defend and counter.”
Marco lunged forward with a smooth attack, and you parried, your blades clashing with a satisfying ring before you swiftly riposted, your blade landing lightly on his torso.
Turning to Charles, you explained. “Since I defended first and then countered, I get the point. Make sense?”
Charles nodded slowly, his brows furrowed in thought. “So, if I just swing wildly, it’s useless unless I have priority.”
“Yes,” you said smiling. “Fencing isn’t about brute force, it’s about control, precision, and strategy.”
“This all felt like a masterclass,” Charles chuckled. “This is very incredible stuff.”
Once Charles had a solid grasp of the basic rules and ths purpose of fencing, you decided it was time to get into the technical aspects.
“Alrighty,” you began, pacing in front of him, foil in hand. “Before you can start attacking, you need to learn how to defend yourself. So, let’s talk about parrying.”
“There are four primary parries in fencing, and each one is important for blocking and setting yourself up for a counterattack.” You added.
Charles nodded, gripping the foil in his hand as if ready to jump in. “Alright, I’m listening. Hit me with it.”
“Not literally,” you teased, pointing your foil at him briefly before continuing. “First is parry four. This is your standard parry, used to block attacks aimed at your torso. You bring the blade across your body like this.”
You demonstrated, twisting your wrist and angling your blade so that the imaginary opponent’s strike would be deflected away. Charles mimicked the movement, though his hand was stiff, and his blade angle slightly off.
You leaned in, using the tip of your foil to adjust his blade position. “Loosen your wrist a bit, it’s all about control, not brute strength. The goal is to guide their blade away, not smack it out of their hands.”
“Okay, okay. Got it.” Charles said, trying again. This time, his movement was smoother.
“Better,” you said, stepping back. “Next is parry six. The one is similar to parry four, but instead of protecting the inside of your body, it covers the outside. Like this.” You executed the parry with ease, your blade moving in a fluid arc.
Charles tried to copy the movement, his blade wobbling slightly as he adjusted his wrist.
“Close,” you said, stepping closer. “But watch your wrist, it needs to stay firm, or you’ll lose control of your blade.” You tapped the back of his hand with your foil, and he adjusted accordingly.
“Parry eight is for low attacks to the outside of your body.” You continued, moving on, and crouching slightly, angling your blade downward to demonstrate. “This one is a little tricky because it requires good reflexes. You’re aiming to protect your lower torso and legs.” Charles gave it a go, though his stance was a bit too wide.
“Too much space,” you said, tapping his knee lightly with your blade. “Keep your movements controlled. The smaller the motion, the quicker you can recover.”
“This is harder than it looks.” Charles exhaled, looking at the camera as he adjusted his stance.
“That’s fencing for you,” you said with a grin. “Last one, parry seven. This one is similar to parry eight, but it protects the inside of your body instead of the ourside.”
You demonstrated the motion, and Charles followed suit, this time managing a relatively smooth movement.
“Good,” you said, stepping back. “Now, key things to remember when parrying—keep your blade pointed at your opponent at all times. It’s not just about blocking, it’s about setting yourself up for a counterattack. As soon as you’ve parried, you need to riposte, counterattack, immediately. If you wait too long, you’ll lose your advantage.”
Marco stepped forward, foil in hand, and you turned to Charles. “I’ll show you how it’s done.”
You squared off with Marco, and as he lunged forward with a mock attack, you parried effortlessly, your blade gliding against his and redirecting it away. In the same motion, you extended your arm, blade tip landing lightly on Marco’s torso.
“See how quick that was?” You said, turning to Charles. “It’s a fluid motion—parry and riposte, all in one go. No wasted movements.”
Charles nodded, his brows furrowed in concentration. “Alright, let me try.”
You stepped aside, letting Marco face Charles. As Marco slowly lunged, Charles attempted a parry, though his movement was slightly delayed, and his riposte lacked precision.
“Not bad,” you said encouragingly. “But don’t overthink it. The more natural it feels, the faster you’ll be.”
“Okay, let’s talk about stance,” you said, planting your feet firmly on the piste. “Your stance is your foundation, if it’s wrong, everything else falls apart.”
You demonstrated, keeping your feet shoulder-width apart, one foot pointing forward and the other at a slight angle.
“Your dominant hand is the one holding the foil. The non-dominant hand stays behind you, raised slightly for balance. So, which hand are you using?” You asked.
“Right.” Charles said, switching the foil to his dominant hand.
“Good,” you said. “Now, copy my stance.”
Charles mirrored your position, though his back foot was slightly out of place.
“Close, but—” you tapoed his leg lightly with your foil. “Your back foot needs to be at an angle, like this. Don’t forget to bend your knees slightly. You need to stay low for balance and quick movement.”
“Not bad,” you said, nodding approvingly when Charles adjusted his stance. “Now let’s work on movement. When you’re in your stance, you need to be able to move forward, backward, and side-to-side quickly withou losing your balance.”
You demonstrated, gliding forward and backward with small, controlled steps. “Notice how my feet stay the same distance apart, no matter where I go. That keeps me balanced and ready to attack or defend.”
Charles followed your lead, though his movements were a bit stiff.
“Relax,” you said, smiling. “You’re not marching in the military. It’s more like a dance, fluid and controlled.” He tried again, this time loosening up slightly.
“Better,” you said. “Now let’s add a lunge, the lunge is your main attacking move. From your stance, you push off your back leg and extend your front leg forward, like this.” You demonstrated, your movement smooth and precise. Charles attempted the motion, but his lunge was too short.
“Bigger step,” you said, tapping his front leg with your foil. “You want fo cover as much ground as possjble without overextending.” After a few tries, he managed a decent lunge.
“Not bad,” you said, stepping back. “You’re getting there. Now, let’s put it all together—stance, movement, parries, and lunges. You ready?”
Charles grinned, gripping his foil. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Alright,” you said, picking up the body cord, “before we start, we need to get you all hooked up.”
Charles tilted his head, examining the cord. “What’s that for?”
“This is a body cord,” you explained, stepping closer to attach it to his fencing jacket. “It connects your weapon to the scoring system. When you land a valid touch, the electrical circuit completes, and the scoreboard registers the point.”
“So no sneaky hits?” He joked, watching closely as you secured it to his back and guided it through the sleeves of his jacket to attach to the foil.
“Not unless you want the referee to see it light up,” you quipped, making sure everything was in place before handing him a fencing mask. “Here, put this on.”
“For this first round, we’re keeping it simple, call it a trial run,” you said, rolling your shoulders and flexing your foil. “Marco will referee and keep things light. Just focus on getting comfortable.”
“Got it. Don’t go easy on me, though.” Charles raised his foil slightly, his excitement evident in his stance.
You laughed. “Trut me, Charles, I won’t.”
Marco stepped onto the side of the piste, holding a referee’s clicked in one hand. “Alright, trial run. I’ll call the touches. En garde!”
You and Charles took your positions at opposite ends of the piste, foils raised in salite before dropping into the en garde stance.
“Prêt? Allez!” Marco called, signaling the start of the bout.
Charles moved hesitant at first, testing his footing as he advanced. You let him come forward, observing his movements.
“Don’t forget your stance,” you reminded him, stepping back slightly. “Stay balanced.”
He nodded, adjusting his feet, and made a tentative lunge. Charles’ foil grazed your blade, missing the target area entirely.
“Close,” you said, countering with a light touch to his torso. Marco raised his hand. “Touch!”
Charles shook his head, laughing. “Okay, that was fast. Was that even one second?”
“Welcome to fencing,” you said with a grin. “It’s all about timing. Relax, though you’re doing fine.”
As the trial run continued, Charles began finding his rhythm. He landed his first touch on your shoulder, earing a quick ‘touch!’ from Marco.
“How does it feel?” You asked, stepping back for a brief pause.
Charles grinned under his mask. “Not bad! Are you nervous yet?”
“Me? Nervous?” You teased. “Cute. Let’s see how you handle the next round round.”
The second round began, and Charles was much more deliberate in his movements. He used the parries you had taught him, successfully blocking two of your attacks and landing another touch on your shoulder.
“Not bad, Lord Perceval,” you said, nodding as you reset your stance. “You’re learning quickly.”
“Of course,” he replied, his voice light with mock arrogance. “I’m a Leclerc. We adapt fast.”
By the end of the round, Marco called for a pause. “Alright, let’s use the scoreboard for the next one.”
“See this?” Marco said, pointing to the display. “Every valid touch will light up here with a beep. First to fifteen points wins.”
Charles noticed the screen, which displayed yor names, complete with small Monaco flags next to them.
“Wait, you personalized it?” He asked, laughing. “Now I feel like I’m in the Olympics.”
“Of course,” you said with a grin. “Nothing but the best for my big brother.”
Charles chuckled, lifting his foil again. As you adjusted your own, you bent the blade slightly, an action that caught his attention.
“Why are you doing that?” He asked.
“It’s something all fencers do,” you explained, holding the blade up for him to see. “Foils are flexible, and bending them ensures they’re in good condition and won’t snap. It also helps make the touches more accurate and less painful.”
“Huh,” Charles said, mimicking the motion with his own foil. “Interesting.”
“Alright, this is it,” you said, lowering your mask. “First to fifteen.”
Marco raised his hand. “En garde! Prêt? Allez!”
The boug began, and Charles quickly demonstrated his growing confidence. He moved fluidly, landing a few clean touches on your torso and arm. You could see his competitiveness kicking in, and you responded with sharper attacks, forcing him to parry and riposte.
Halfway through, the score was tied at 7-7, and the beeping sound of the scoreboard filled the room with each touch.
“You’re doing great.” You said during a brief pause.
“Thanks,” Charles replied, panting slightly. “But I’m not letting you win.”
“Good,” you said, resetting your stance. “Because I’m not letting you win, either.”
The intensity ramped up in the final stretch. Charles managed to land three more touches, bringing his total to ten, but you quickly countered with a series of precise attacks, pushing your score to fifteen.
Marco raised his hand as the final beep sounded. “Touché! Match for her—15 to 10!”
“Lifting your mask, you grinned at Charles, who pulled off his own mask, shaking his head in disbelief.
“That was incredible,” he said, still catching his breath. “I actually thought I had you for a moment there.”
“Well fought, champ! Ten points is impressive for a first timer, you did really great.” You said, resting your foil on your shoulder. “But I told you, fencing isn’t easy as it looks.”
Charles laughed, running a hand through his sweaty hair. “Yeah, no kidding. I think I’ll stick to racing.”
Marco, who had been observing with a smile, stepped in. “You were actually good for a beginner. You’re a fast learner, Charles. I’ve work with a lot of first-timers, and not many can pick up that quickly.”
“That’s true,” you chimed in nodding. “You were way better than I expected. Usually, people take ages to figure out how to lunge properly or keep their stance balanced.”
Charles’ grin widened. “Well, what can I say? It’s in my blood to be competitive.”
Marco laughed, clapping Charles on the shoulder. “You should come by more often during her trainings. You’d make a good parry partner.”
“Oh stop feeding his ego,” you said, rolling your eyes playfully. “It’s already huge.”
Charles gave a mock bow. “Keep it coming, Marco. I’m soaking it all in.”
Marco just smiled as the camera zoomed in on you both as he continued. “Not, really, Charles. If you’re free diring off-season, you should consider it. You’d give her a good challenge, and it would keep her on her toes.”
“Hmm…” Charles leaned on his foil again, pretending to consider the offer. “Fencing during off-season. I might actually think about that.”
You laughed. “Sure, if you can handle beaten every time.”
“Bold words. But we’ll see.” Charles grinned. “So, what’s next for you? You’ve already won the Olympics. Where do you go from here?”
“Next up is the Fencing World Cup. It’s coming up in a few months, so I’m focused on preparing for that.” You smiled, feeling the excitement bubbling inside of you.
Charles nodded. “If people want fo follow your journey, where can they find you?”
“Everywhere.” You said with a laugh, then added, “but seriously, you guys can follow me on my social media. If you are curious about up coming tournaments, you can check out Team Monaco’s offical instagram. They post all of the updates there.”
Charles turned to the camera. “There you have it, guys.” He then faced you and Marco. “I just want to say thank you, for real. I know your schedules are crazy, and you took time to teach me something completely out of my comfort zone. I really had fun.”
“You’re welcome here anytime, Charles.” Marco smiled warmly. “You’re a natural. Who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be on the piste at a tournament.”
Charles laughed, shaking his head. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but I appreciate the vote of confidence.”
“You did great today,” you grinned, nudging him lightly with your elbow. “Who knows? Maybe we’ll see you fencing for Monaco one day.”
Charles smiled. “Only if you promise not to embarrass me in front of everyone.”
“No promises.” You teased.
Marco gestured toward the camera. “Alright, shall we wrap this up?”
You, Charles, and Marco all faced the lens. “Thanks for watching!” You said with a wave. “Remember, fencing is cooler than you think.”
“And harder than it looks!” Charles added. “Thank you both for taking the time to teach me, I had a blast today. It’s always fun learning new things.”
“Of course, Charlie!” You replied warmly. “We’ll be waiting for your next fencing session.”
“You’re always welcome, Charles.” Marco smiled. “Just don’t take too long to return, alright? We might have to recruit you into the team at this rate!”
All of you laughed as you said your goodbyes, and with that, the video came to a close, screen fading into black.

how seventeen would act around their s/o while drunk heheee
pairing: seventeen x gn reader, established relationship, fluff
word count: 1.8k
warnings: alcohol, cursing, mentions of sleeping over and physical affection w/ the boys but it’s meant in a fluffy context, not a suggestive/mature one!
other disclaimers: lowercase intended, probably typos, setting is hanging out with all the boys and with you!!!!!
a/n: i just realized in my wip post i said "crush" instead of "s/o"........WOOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT ANYWAY hello everyone, i’m finally back with another post! i;m sorry for the very long hiatus, i p much always have something going on in my life lol @-@ but i have time now to actually write!!! i hope you enjoy this one hehe -mina
✩‧₊˚clingy drunks:
mingyu: this man will not leave you alone. he is in love with you. and he’s cheesy! in a sweet way :) will kiss your hand every few mins, lean on you, or put his arm around you so you lean on him hehe. i think he would also want you to reciprocate the clinginess too hehe,,,it makes him feel loved :3 i can see him moving your hand to his hair to ask you to play with it, and if you stopped, he would just take your hand and put it back in his hair LOl. he strikes me as someone who would take care of you (kinda like how he takes care of drunk hoshi hehe) and makes sure you're ok, even if he's drunk himself :]
seungcheol: omg omg HES GOING TO DOTE ON YOU SO MUCH!!! “jagi are you ok” “jagi do you need water” “jagi i’ll walk you to the bathroom, be careful”...he doesn’t realize that he himself is wobbling around and spilling water, LMAO. he just wants to help his baby!!! would def ask where you’re going if you get up, ask you to stay over with him, etcetc. would always have an arm around you and constantly LOL. would also go on a random rant about how protective he is of you HAHAHA!! like “Y/N . IF ANYONE MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE. TELL ME RIGHT AWAY . I WILL DEFEND YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH  EVEN IF IT’S MY OWN FRIENDS I DONT CARE WHO I HAVE TO BEAT UP (svt: BRO WTF?????) . GOD I LOVE U SOMUCH .” pls give him some water and a kiss!!!
junhui: i don’t think he’d necessarily be like talkative or doting, but i think he’s the type to just want to be around you and would sit really close to you :3 he almost gives me like Protective Bf vibes in the way that he’d just wanna be by your side to make sure you’re feeling ok too. plus, junnie just likes your company! i can picture him sending a lot of smiles toward you every few minutes because he’s so happy you;re his partner and he feels so comfy with you next to him :) also he likes leaning his head on your shoulder and he WILL show you cat pics the entire night…..pls comment on all of them or he’ll get sad. he also gives me the vibes of someone who has lazy days with his s/o after a night of drinking hehe…napping, hotpot and movies :)))
✩‧₊˚loud/emotional/(verbally) affectionate drunks:
soonyoung: MESSY U WILL HAVE TO CARE HIM !!!! did you see him on lee youngji’s show?? so cuteeee :( he would just shower you w/ affection heheh. im picturing him hugging you from behind like how he hugged the ice in the youngji ep and he would nestle his head into the crook of your neck and reach over to kiss your cheek :3c he would announce like every 20min how much he loves you to the whole room like "THIS IS MY PARTNER I LOVE THEM VERY MUCH THANKS!!!" and would post blurry pics of the two of you on his story with typos "i lvoe tehfm sonmchch" HAHA!! youll definitely have to sober up to take care of him hehe. would definitely start crying bc he loves you so much and YOU have to comfort him……you and mingyu get him to the car that night because he can’t walk by himself. the next morning hes like babe that was so fun round 2 of drinking tonight???????????? (horanghae pose)
seungkwan: BRUH KWAN GETS INTO (JOKE) ARGUMENTS WHILE HE’S DRUNK I HAVE NO DOUBTS!!! 90% of the time he’s trying to pick a fight with mingyu or chan i just know it I KNOW IT TO BE TRUE!! but with his s/o, i think he’s the type to be like HONEY THIS ONE IS FOR YOU and he starts belting a love ballad and singing directly to you HAHA!!! (vernon: why are u always trying to outsing everyone. no one else is singing.) seungkwan ignores vern’s comment and keeps going tho. he almost moves himself to tears by how much he loves you and how much love he’s pouring into his performance LOL. you tell him you love him too and that he doesnt have to sing VERY LOUDLY IN PUBLIC to profess his love !!! its not that serious pls sit down!!! and hes like MY LOVE FOR YOU IS SERIOUS . and that’s how you end up with a pouty and drunk kwan!!!!!!!!!
chan: oh my sweet chan,,he would just shower you with affection LMAO like “i love you. you’re amazing. you look so beautiful right now, you know that?” type of thing. he’s just the biggest simp hehe. i think hes also the type to just wanna have fun, he'd prob cheer you on if you took a shot like FUCK YEAH BABE GO OFF!!!! but i also think that he would be doing EVERYTHING for you. "i'll pour your shot!!!!! don't lift a finger SERIOUSLY!!!!!" asks you every 30min if youve had water. (you: yes. i had some 30min ago. when you GAVE ME SOME.) gets you snacks. if you needed to throw up he WILL hold your hair with a drink in the other hand (for him)!!!! he also helps you put your jacket on at the end of the night. it doesn't matter how drunk he is, he's firm on taking care of YOU!!! <3
✩‧₊˚(physically) affectionate drunks:
wonwoo: he’s all smiles for you hehe. clings onto your arm whenever you’re near him. he wouldn't be too loud or anything, but i think he'd shyly whisper compliments to you now and then about how you look nice or how much he loves you. i think he’d be one of the more chill people, he just feels happier than usual bc of the alcohol hehehhe. usually, wonu is pretty good at keeping himself composed when you show him affection. but when he’s drunk, i think he’d react a little more…he strikes me as someone who’s more verbally/physically affectionate when it’s just you two, but around friends/family he tones it down. but when he’s drunk i think he would be comfortable having you sit on his lap or having an arm around you <3
jihoon: i am convinced lee jihoon is a different man when he’s drunk!!!!!!!!!  i have a hot-ish take when it comes to drunk uji…omg woozi would SOOOO open up physically and emotionally to you..and he’d be the type to always, Always have an arm around your waist and constantly hold your hand, looking at you with a smile that leads all the way up to his eyes. he’s someone who has dealt with a lot in his life, but in this moment, he’s so grateful to be here with his friends, and someone he loves that also loves him for who he is. the reason i think he’d be like this is juts because like. he doesn’t drink much, but when he does, feelings he’s been keeping to himself finally come up to the surface. also his face, neck and ears are constantly bright red because of the alcohol LOL. but ALSO they'd be red the next day when he realizes how he behaved in front of you hehe…. don't tease him too much about it or he'll die of embarrassment!
seokmin: dont ask me why bc idk but i think he would ruffle your hair constantly because youre so cute. then he would get distracted and talk to the bros for a bit, look at you again and remember how cute you are and ruffle it again sorry i dont make the rules!!!!!!! dk is definitely the loud/funny drunk hehe…hes the type to be giggly/try to make everyone laugh :) but i think he’d definitely try to make you laugh the most !! mostly in terms of physical affection though, i think he’d just dote on you a lot…like you know in the dingo video how he kept kissing woozi??? yeah he does that to you. along with the hair ruffles. and the attempts to get you to laugh. good luck. you’re going to drown in affection from this man LOL.
✩‧₊˚happy/chill drunks:
vernon: HE WILL CARE YOU this man is all vibes. he’s just here to have a good time lol. you’ll probably be the drunk one who needs to be taken care of :3 but if he was somehow convinced to get really drunk, i think he would still just be vibes. but happier vibes. i think he would just laugh at everything and keep a hand constantly on your knee heheh. also i think he would encourage seungkwan’s antics more when he’s drunk i’m just saying .
minghao: minghao is just relishing in the moment of enjoying his time with his friends and partner~ he doesn't strike me as someone who drinks much, kinda like vernon. he'd be more focused on having a good time with everyone! i think he's the type to have hangover remedies ready for you at home for the next day. i think he would also be the type of bf to know when to cut you off LMAO like “y/n’s had 4 shots….hyung STOP pouring them another one!!!!!!!!” he just seems like he'd be prepared to take care of his partner :) you're so lucky!! he’s also the type to observe you and take pictures/videos if you’re doing something funny while you’re drunk LMAO!!!!
joshua: josh is a giggly drunk i have no doubts. also in the dingo video that man was RED af!!! would probably be like “im fine im SO SOBER RIGHT NOW…BABE TELL THEM HOW SOBER I AM!!!” he is not sober. i also think he would be the type to compare hands with you LMAO. you’re just like ???? you know how big both our hands are???? you’re literally my bf???? and hes like I JUST WANTED TO CHECK OK!!! tbh he seems so fun to be around LMAO like he on the way to the hangout hes like “babe lets match each other if u drink i drink” and ur like HELLO SIR???????? WHO IS DRIVING US HOME?????? (jeonghan does and he sleeps over.)  he just wants to have FUN and let loose with the homies and his partner!!!! consequences are for TOMORROW, y/n!!!!!! (he might start sulking if you don’t agree to match him but it’s fine you both know your limits hehe)
jeonghan: i see him as someone who doesn’t go too wild when drinking. kinda like vernon and minghao, i think he’s more there for vibes than getting fucked up lol. if anything, he’s doting on you because he finds you so cute, especially when you’re drunk hehehe. HE would be the one to ask you to do aegyo or something and when you do he just dies of cuteness lmao. i think he would also tease you in silly ways, like convincing you that he and s.coups are actually long lost brothers who found each other in college, or that seungkwan is a natural blonde. and of course you believe him which is the funniest shit ever to him!!!! LMAO!!!!! your shock and wonder at his blatant lies is the cutest thing to him. don’t worry tho he’ll tell you the next day nothing he said was true, except for when he said he loves you :)

Okay but like-- imagine this:
Trafalgar Law, right?
He's a man who's kinda prideful. So when he gets hurt, he doesn't want his s/o to know that he is. I mean he's a doctor, he can do it himself, right? But the thing is he got hurt by his good arm side which is the right side. His s/o finds out and helps him heal with small kisses and hugs and he's being a baby about it (he likes the attention)
characters: trafalgar d. water law
content warning: gn!reader, law being super soft and an attention seeker hehe; i haven’t reread it, so i apologise if it doesn’t make much sense and if there are typos >_< .
a/n: i love when prideful men seek attention ok? bye. (actually, i wanna say thank you for sending in reqs hehe. i’m sorry if i’m a bit slow at responding tho)
Tumblr media
law is too proud to actually reach out and ask for help when he’s injured. he can handle himself, he’s the doctor of the crew, he knows what he should and should not do.
he doesn’t want you to worry about him for stupid reasons.
that’s also why he doesn’t tell you — he also is full of pride. he can’t bear the thought of sitting down and being taken care of.
until . . .
“already said i’m fine,” he grumbled, not even looking at you while you bandage his arm. “whatever you say,” you focused on the task at hand before smiling proudly at your work.
“didn’t need your help,” law kept going, acting all grumpy and annoyed that you found out about his injury. “okay,” you kissed his lips and then went putting away the medical items you used just now.
law’s mind went blank before a single thought formed in his head. he actually wanted you to take care of him.
“actually,” he cleared his throat, glancing at you. “hm? do you need something else?” you turned to look at him, a hint of worry in your voice.
“no, no. i’m fine,” he reassured you, cheeks warming up as he tried to find the words. “can you, uh…”
you tilted your head to the side, just staring at him in confusion. law was quiet for some time before finally looking at your face, embarrassed for some reason.
“do that again?” he kept his voice down. you took a couple of seconds to realise what he meant, a smirk curving your lips as you walked closer to him once again.
you kissed law on the lips a second time, gently. you sat next to him and pulled him closer as to hug him, his eyes widened but he leaned into your comforting embrace. you chuckled and held him in a hug before kissing his forehead too.
“do you feel better now?” you teased him a little, enjoying this moment to the fullest. “hm hm,” he closed his eyes, not liking the idea of you making fun of him. even though getting such attentions from you made his heart race in his chest. he couldn’t deny that it was a pleasant feeling, you taking care of him and being this sweet.
you cupped his cheek and caressed his skin, you leaned closer to kiss him once more. law wrapped his arm around your body and sighed, resting his head against your chest.
“you really needed a break, you know,” you murmured, you were genuinely concerned about him overworking himself. “i think my cheek hurts too,” he ignored you completely, sounding like a little boy as you started giggling. you kissed his cheek, noticing a satisfied expression appearing on his face. “my mouth too,” he added then, abandoning the embarrassment and pushing his pride aside.

Sweeter than honey - Hozier x f!reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: sorry not sorry if this is the most cliché thing about Andy but couldn't help my self. This fic is a statement to say this man deserves more stories under his name <33 love you forest daddy (hope you never reads this haha) Warnings: FLUFF, typos Words count: 0.7 k
The short path from Andrew’s house to the –no so small — patch of his land, destined to his bees, felt like it took ages to walk down. She felt her stomach turn due to anxiety thinking about the task in hand. Y/n had been stung by a bee during her childhood, traumatizing her enough so the pain, the fear, remained for years and years. The woman damned herself for being in love with the biggest beekeeper around town.
Her sight fell on Andrew’s back, watching him walk with so much excitement, she couldn’t reciprocate. The man had been trying for the longest time to convince his girlfriend to meet his bees, being the offer declined time and time again. Until Y/n felt guilty enough and finally said yes. She would never forget the bright smile he gifted her when Y/n timidly asked about the process and she could join him during his next visit.
As if he could sense her eyes on him, Andrew turned around still walking not wasting any minute, scared about Y/n changing her mind.
“Baby?” his smile fell a little.
“If one of them sting me…” she warned him, still scared of the situation.
Andrew stopped in his tracks, worried about his girlfriend once more. The man grabbed her hand on his, sharing some warmth, wishing it could take away her fear.
Searching for her eyes, he continued, “trust me, okay?”
Y/n couldn’t help to push her feet down on the earth like a little child throwing a tantrum. The act made her boyfriend laugh.
“Baby…” she wanted to wipe his amusement away.
“Stop making fun of me. This is serious for me, Andy.”
He moved closer and closer, rounding her with his big arms.
Y/n felt his breath on her hair line, “I know, I know. Everything will be okay, I wouldn’t let you get hurt, baby. I promise.” Andrew ended his sentence leaving a kiss on her forehead.
“Okay, let's do this.” she moved backwards, giving him a stronger look than before, trying to let him know she was ready.
Hand in hand, they approached the colonies.
……………………………………..
In the end, Y/n had fun with Andrew and his bees. He showed her the day-to-day work, the progress of each colony, and even she saw a queen from up close, which excited her the most. She did fell scared during the first movements when he was worried about a box falling apart and all his attention was in transferring the colony to their new home.
Even though after that short moment, her boyfriend was focused on making her fell comfortable around his little friends. It was even ironic how gentle the bees were, just as Andy, making her fell quickly in love with them.
Y/n watched him too his special outfit, trying to comb his long hair, and like a little excited girl she started talking.
“So, when do we come back?”
Andrew chuckled.
“Someone is not scared any more, huh?” he teased her, combing his hair back into his signature bun.
Y/n felt too seen by her boyfriend, “Well, I-”
“We can return tomorrow, if you want…” Andrew offered, taking her face between his big hands.
“Really?”
“Yes, baby. Whatever you want.”
“I would love to!” she answered, looking into his soft eyes.
“Me too.” he left a kick kiss on her lips, feeling her relax into his embrace.
Y/n was the first one to push back, “I can’t wait to see them again.”
Andrew, amazed by her changed of attitude towards the bees, faked a frown.
“I’m starting to believe you prefer them over me.”
“Hundred percent yes!” Y/n joined the joke, whispering her answer before covering her mouth quickly with her hand. “Never, my love.”
The singer laughed at her antics, leaning down to kiss her once more.
Without many more words, Andrew and Y/n walked in silence towards his house when an intrusive though crossed Y/n’s head.
“Would you name a queen after me?”
Andy stayed silence.
“Andy?”
Still no answer.
“Don’t tell me…”  Y/n turned to witness a very red-faced Andrew. “Stop it! You’re too sweet to be true, honey!” she exclaimed, making her best effort to kiss his blushed cheeks.

what do you think about batboys/ feysand/ nessian with a mate that used to get bullied before they met, And one day they’re at ritas and she sees her old bullies and she freezes up. They notice and reader explains and they beat the bullies up, UGHH THE ANGSTT AND COMFORT👀🤍
Ex’s Are Assholes
Poly!batboys x reader
A/n: I went with the boys on this one bc they’d go feral if you ran into your old bully (I didn’t proof read this so sorry in advance for typos I didn’t have the energy)
Warnings: over protective bat boys and slight violence
For date night the boys decided to take you drinking and dancing at Rita’s. It wasn’t with the rest of the group, just you and your mates. And they promised you ice cream later so you were happy to go to Rita’s for date night.
You were just happy to have their undivided attention. Currently you were dancing with Rhys. He spun you, pulled you back into him so he could sway with you to the music.
Cassian and Azriel made their way back to you holding drinks for all of you. Cassian handed Rhys his wine and you your cocktail. As you danced around with them more Cass accidentally bumped your arm causing you to spill your drink.
“Oh, honey! I am so sorry. Let me get you another one.” He said in that sweet apologetic tone. You smiled at him kissing his cheeks. “Don’t worry baby, I’m gunna go get another.” You sauntered off to the bar shooting them a wink over your shoulder.
Approaching the bar you spot Marcy, your favorite bartender ever! “Hi y/n! Usual cocktail?” You gave her a big smile. “Yes please. Cass made me spill.” March smiled and shook her head as she made you another drink. “I’m out of your choice of vodka. I’m gunna go grab another bottle.” She said, walking out from behind the bar toward the back room.
As you waited by the bar you felt someone nudge your arm. You moved over a smidge to give the stranger room but you couldn’t shake the familiarity of their presence. Glancing next to you, you stop breathing. Your ex-boyfriend is staring down at you, wearing a smirk that made you squirm.
“Hi y/n.” He drawls clearly drunk. He tries to tilt your head up by your chin but you jerk away. This male was the last person you wanted to see. He treated you like shit throughout your relationship. He was verbally abusive and tried to turn your friends against you. Gaslighting you was his fucking hobby and when you had enough he played the victim.
You firm,y pointed a finger at him, “Don’t ever. Fucking touch me again.” Your voice shook a little, your eyes going wide as tears welled in them. You hated that he had this affect on you. “Come on sweetheart. You know you want me back.”
You were at a loss for words. The only thing on your mind was getting back to the safety of your boys and getting the fuck out of here. You turned on your heel and sped walked through the bar until you saw the back of Cassian’s wings.
You rant the last few steps, grabbing Azriel’s arm to try and stop your hands from shaking. You looked back at the bar and saw your ex walking toward you. “I want to go home. We have to go now.” Azriel put his drink down on the high top table they were standing at, gently holding your arms.
“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Your whole body was shaking at this point. Cassian and Rhys followed your gaze and saw the male drunkenly stumbling towards you. “Was he bothering you?” Rhys’ voice tense and dark. You nod. “He’s my ex.”
You let your tears flow down your cheeks and that sent Cassian over the edge. He stretched out his neck and cracked his knuckles. Az steered you into Rhys’ arms copying Cassian’s movements. Your ex finally made it to the table and clearly couldn’t read their mood.
He tried to walk toward you but Cassian caught his shoulder in a bone crushing grip. “She doesn’t want to speak to you. I suggest you leave.” He growled out. “Or things won’t work out so well for you.” Az added, his voice deadly.
Your ex tried to push Cassian and that’s all they needed. Azriel’s shadows restrained him and he struggled against the dark chains. “Take her home.” Cassian commanded to Rhys. “We’ll be there in a bit.” The two Illyrians led the male outside. The last thing you saw was the door slamming shut before darkness surrounded you and Rhys.
When light appeared again you were back in the living room of the Town House. You collapsed on the couch and began to sob. Rhys held you against him rubbing soothing circles on your back. “It’s ok. You’re safe now, it’s just us. No one’s going to hurt you y/n.”
Pulling yourself together you sat up and wiped at your eyes. Rhys scooted down the couch an inch to give you some space as you took deep breaths. “I hate that he got this reaction out of me.” You gave him a sad look which he returned. “I know darling. Sometimes we hold on to things without even knowing it. And it’s ok to cry about it, there’s nothing wrong with letting those emotions out.”
“Thank you.” You whispered, slipping your arms around his neck as he pulled you into his lap.
A few moments later Cassian and Azriel came in the front door. Their knuckles bloody and panting. You rose form the couch motioning for the, to follow you. You led them to the upstairs bathroom and pointed at the edge of the massive tub, “Sit.”
They followed your orders and waited with their hands resting on their knees. Rhys came to stand next to you handing you two cloths. You wet both of them and started wiping their hands. “You don’t have to do this y/n.” Azriel said, his voice softer than it was when you left him at Rita’s. You just shook your head and continued cleaning his scarred hands until most of the blood was gone.
You threw the cloth in the laundry bin, picking up the other to clean Cassian’s hands. When you were done you kissed them both on their foreheads, pulling them up and leading them to bed.
That night they squished you extra tight between them. Making you feel safe and secure.

Yanagi is a lot different than you would’ve imagined.
You decided you’d listen to Miyamura and attempt to ‘reconnect’ with him. For the past couple of days you’ve been hanging out with him on the weekends, even walking home with him after school to try and learn as much about him as possible. You try not to think about Miyamura’s dejected face when you told him about it.
Once during the weekend when you and Yanagi agreed to hang out you showed up early and woke him up. Safe to say, he is not a morning person. Apart from now understanding why he’s always late in the morning, you’ve come to understand that Yanagi is a little bit different than the boy you remembered.
While at first glance he acted almost exactly the same, once you got to know him there were little things that gave you a feeling. You can’t describe it more than that, it just felt like something, but you weren’t sure what.
You understand that people change overtime and it’s very likely your friend changed, but something about Yanagi just didn’t click in your brain. Everytime you thought about it you shrugged it off, thinking maybe it was difficult for you to accept he’d be different from what you remembered.
“Oh look, a park.” Yanagi pointed and you shifted your attention.
He began walking to a pair of swings and you followed, taking a seat next to him while gently kicking your legs out.
You decided that during this hangout you were going to ask him.
“Can’t believe it’s almost spring.” He traced patterns in the sand with his foot.
He was right, despite it almost being night the air was still warm enough for you to be without a jacket.
“Just a couple of more months until summer break.” You smiled, already planning what you were going to do with your friends.
This seems like a good time to bring it up..
“Hey, this might sound weird, but..” You paused, wondering how to go about asking without doing it directly.
Yanagi noticed your hesitancy and nodded for you to continue with a gentle smile. Oddly enough it comforted you.
“Have you ever made.. a pinky promise?” You fiddled with the end of your shirt.
“Pinky promise?” Yanagi repeated. “I’m pretty sure I have when I was younger..”
Your heart leapt at his answer. Don’t get excited, everyone makes them, that was a really general question, I need to ask something more specific..
“…Was it serious?”
“Um—“ Yanagi paused, seriously thinking about your question. “I guess at the time it was? But the promises I made were about silly things, so not totally serious.”
“Oh.”
The silence that followed was painfully awkward, not even the crickets dared to chirp their late night tunes. Part of you regretted asking, but there was no turning back now.
“… Did you ever make a serious pinky promise? Like, one you’d hope the other person kept despite going years and years without seeing them?”
Yanagi shot you a confused glance. “That’s oddly specific?”
“I’m sorry, it’s just!—” Your ears burned in embarrassment. “You just remind me of someone I made a promise with..” you whispered.
“Ah, so that’s what this is about.”
You felt your heart drop, this was it.
“You feel bad about a promise you made with someone and it’s been years since you’ve seen them so you have no way of proving you’ve been trying to keep your promise, right?”
You couldn’t help but let your jaw drop at his response. That wasn’t what you were expecting. While that wasn't the entire reason, you couldn’t bring yourself to explain due to the growing embarrassment you were feeling.
Yanagi took your silence as confirmation and patted your back softly. “It’s nice to know that you hold promises like that so close to your heart, I’m sure your friend would be glad to know you still think about them.”
He was so close to the truth, but he missed one crucial part.
There was no way for you to predict that Yanagi would’ve misunderstood your words, or maybe he was well aware of what you were trying to imply and was trying to help redirect you without causing you further embarrassment, either way, he made it clear he was not who you were looking for.
“In my opinion, you have no reason to worry. The fact that you still remember the promise and you’re still worrying about it proves you’re a good friend. I’m sure your friend would agree too.” Yanagi continued to rample while you tried to reel your mind back in.
You sighed, deciding to go along with his story. “Thing is, I don’t even know where they are.”
“You’ll find them eventually, when the time is right. The universe is weird like that, it brings you back to things when you’re ready for it.”
As inspiring as Yanagi’s words were, they left you feeling a bit helpless. When you guys went your separate ways you accepted the fact that maybe he was right and you wouldn’t find your friend for a long time.
Not until the universe deemed you ready.
Tumblr media
“Can’t believe it’s that time of the year already.” Ishikawa sighed.
Normally you would overlook his complaining, but this time you found yourself agreeing with him. Love was in the air at Katagiri High and while most were bitter about spending it alone, you were mostly upset about the obscene prices your favorite treats would rise to because of the holiday. Most shops and restaurants would likely be packed with couples too, which meant no after school shopping for little trinkets you didn’t need. You’d have to head straight home once school was over.
“Just get a girlfriend already so you can stop complaining.” Yoshikawa snapped, pushing him away when he began to eye her lunch.
“You say that but I heard you complain to Hori about this right before we started eating.” He retorted.
As the two bickered, Miyamura nudged your shoulder. “Wanna come by the bakery after school? I have some new recipes I want someone to try before we start promoting them.”
You quickly nodded, it was as if he had read your mind. You hadn’t realized it until now, but you were so obsessed with figuring out if Yanagi was your old friend that you began to neglect Miyamura. More time with Yanagi meant less with Miyamura; the thought made your heart ache. Guess you wouldn’t be heading straight home after, you had a lot of catching up to do.
“What about you (Y/n)?”
Ishikawa called, breaking you out of your small trance.
“Do you have a special someone?” He elaborated, batting his eyes and puckering his lips in an exaggerated way while leaning close to you.
You roll your eyes and push him away. “Maybe.”
That comment alone was enough to peak the whole group’s interest. “Woah, seriously?” Ishikawa gaped.
Despite knowing them for almost a full school year you still kept most things to yourself, so to hear you even mention being interested in someone was enough to keep them entertained the whole lunch period.
“It’s not as interesting as you think it is.” You chuckled as Hori pushed Ishikawa’s jaw up to close his mouth. “When I was little I met this guy and he was the first friend I ever really made. I barely even remember him, but.. I wanna meet him again.”
You fiddled with the untucked ends of your shirt, missing the way Miyamura’s eyes widened at your confession. The silence was broken when Ishikawa slammed his fist down on the table, catching everyone’s attention.
“Oh man that's actually sort of tragic..” He mumbled into his hand.
“I think it’s pretty romantic, just like in the novels! Though I guess yours might not have a happy ending.. but that doesn’t mean you won’t!!” Yoshikawa began awkwardly rambling near the end of her sentence when she noticed how depressing she made it sound.
“I mean, it’s not that bad.” You tried to laugh it off, but the truth is it bothered you. A lot. “I’ll find him someday. When I do, I hope he remembers me.”
A year ago you would’ve been mortified to find out that you’ve been getting too personal with your classmates. Maybe you shouldn't have told them about this, maybe you weren’t ready to reveal the one secret that you’ve been keeping in, but it’s too late to take back what you said now.
You’ve changed, you’ve grown, and that’s okay.
Tumblr media
You could hardly contain your excitement.
After days of not spending time with Miyamura you were finally going to hang out together again.
As you finished packing you looked over at his seat and noticed he left his bag. Miyamura was helping Hori deliver something to the student council room and told you he’d be right back so you could walk together.
You figured it’d probably be easier if you went to the student council room so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way back just to pick you up, so you grabbed his bag and began heading over to the student council room. As you approached the door you noticed Hori and Miyamura seemingly bickering in the front. Hori was quick to notice you and gave you an irritated smile.
“One sec!”
With that she dragged him into the room and slammed the door shut. The sound was loud enough that it echoed down the empty halls. Through the door you could hear muffled sounds of an argument between the two along with shuffling.
You felt your heart drop. Oh no, did spending all that time with Yanagi cause you and Miyamura to drift away that much? Were him and Hori a thing now? Were you interrupting something between them?—
You didn’t have much time to think before the door flew open, causing you to jump. “Ok! All good now! See you later (Y/n)!” She said while maintaining that eerie smile. She began to walk away and you shivered at the scary aura that surrounded her.
You couldn’t help but notice how she only acknowledged you. Was she mad at you?
“Uhm, so what was that about?” You turned to Miyamura, who looked absolutely haggard.
His shirt was wrinkled from the top and his hair was messy; anyone who saw him and Hori come out of that room would’ve assumed something other than an argument occurred. “Don’t worry about it, she’s probably just fed up with me.” He answered, though that didn’t help calm your nerves.
“Why would she be fed up with you?” You questioned.
He gently took his bag from your shoulder and began leading you out of the school. “She’s just mad because I won’t accept her advice.”
Advice? “Advice for what?”
He opened his mouth to answer, but immediately closed it.
“.. Don’t worry about it.”
Despite his words, you worried. You worried a lot because Miyamura was your friend and you cared for him a lot. Maybe a lot more than a friend should.
Don’t! You’ve been over this already! You can’t!—
The thought escaped your mind. Why can’t you see him as more than a friend? Does having feelings for Miyamura make you feel guilty that you’re moving on from that old friend of yours?
Yes, you answered. Yes, feeling that way towards Miyamura makes you feel guilty. It makes you feel scared that you’ll move on and forget about that little boy entirely, but part of you thinks you can’t ever forget him. Despite your spotty memory, he’s the only memory that’s remained constant.
You don’t have to look out for him like you did when you were little. He’s in high school now, likely with his own group of friends, leading his own life.
It’s then that you realized you don’t have to stay stuck in the past, you’re allowed to move forward while still keeping what happened close to your heart. That doesn’t mean you’ll forget.
You don’t think you’ll ever be able to forget him, no matter how hard you try.

a week passed, then another, then another. it was now officially well into autumn and you had yet to be confronted by ivy again, or bothered by any other student for that matter.
“an off-season soccer tournament? during school?”
“yeah,” laurance grins, dressed in his soccer uniform and some beat-up sneakers as he walks alongside you and aphmau. “don’t be too sad without me in our classes.”
a playful scoff leaves your lips as you roll your eyes at him, placing a hand over your chest.
“i’m heartbroken, devastated even. however will i survive without you, laurance?”
amused snickers leave his mouth, face scrunching as he covers his face before comically recomposing himself, imitating your dramatic pose.
“i know, please forgive me. i’ll come back for you, my darling!”
“wait, what other schools are coming?” aphmau questions, brushing past both of your bantering. “enough for you to be out the whole school day?”
he nods, fluffing his hair with his fingers and sighing.
“yeah, nahakra high and… o’khasis prep is coming.” he groans under his breath, shoulders dropping as he shakes his head in disappointment. “that game is gonna be a total shi—“
he clears his throat.
“—i mean, it’ll be… a humbling experience. they’re hard to beat anyways, but our team right now is not doing so well.”
aphmau hums thoughtfully. “well, good luck? i wish i could come watch and cheer everyone on.”
laurance suddenly perks up, taking long steps forward and turning around. there’s a pep in his step as he walks backward, grinning at the two of you.
“during free period and athletics i think you’re allowed to come watch if your teacher lets you. you should ask.”
“oh? guess we’ll finally get to see how you became the captain your sophomore year.”
he shrugs, lips curling up smugly as he tilts his head back.
“you’ll be sooo impressed.” he gloats, tone humorous.
“uh-huh…”
his eyes focus back on you, eyes glinting in mischief.
“if you come to watch me, i’m gonna call you out on the field to play on the team.”
“huh?” you raise an eyebrow. “no way, then your team would for sure lose.”
“nah, i bet you’re secretly a pro.”
“i’m not, but aphmau is pretty good.”
the girl looks up, shaking her head. “what? i’m okay at it, but…”
“garroth told me you totally clocked zane in the face when your families went to the park a couple weeks ago.” laurance snickers. “wish i could’ve seen that.”
“rude!” aphmau scolds lightheartedly. “i felt really bad about that!”
“oh, whatever. that little cyclops deserves it.” he rolls his eyes.
“laurance!”
now that you didn’t have ivy breathing down your neck, you felt… really happy going to school. you grew closer with the volleyball team at practice every day, as well as lucinda and a few of the other girls you’d run into in your classes. you ended up seeing that meif’wa girl again too, and the little freshman was sickeningly adorable.
you also met jeffory, and while you felt for poor travis and his one-sided crush on the volleyball captain, you couldn’t blame katelyn for her choice of boyfriend. he had sat with katelyn a few times at lunch, and you’d see him coming in to help with the girls’ after-school practice as you were leaving for the day. you’d yet to find a flaw in him, unless being much too kind-hearted could be a flaw.
speaking of travis, you’d finally met his friend dante that he and aphmau had mentioned a few times. he wasn’t as elusive and mysterious as he had been when he was just a name floating in your brain, and was instead… quite the dork who was trying way too hard to be a ladies man. he was pretty funny, though, so you couldn’t even be mad at his shitty pick up lines and awful attempts at winking.
although, despite all these new friends and feeling like a normal high school kid again, you still felt on edge. like you were only in the calm eye of the storm before getting your feet swept out from under you by the hurricane.
that hurricane really was imminent, and it came to you in the form of the tall senior you crashed into as you rushed to your next class, praying you wouldn’t be any later than you already were. the boy is much taller than you, and his lean muscles and firm frame didn’t provide a very comfortable cushion for you to run into. stumbling back with a surprised noise, you immediately go to apologize before even looking up.
“i’m so—“ you start, stumbling on your words as your eyes land on sharp deep blue. “—um… so sorry.”
unruly black hair hangs over gene’s dark lashes as he looks down at you, eyes narrowing and canines peeking out in a cat-like grin. he looks like he had just caught your little mouse tail underneath his sharp claws, and you know that the hurricane’s winds have now swept you back up in the storm.
his tie is loose, top buttons of his uniform shirt undone, sleeves messily rolled up to his elbows. how has he not gotten dress coded for this? scratch that. maybe he did, and he just doesn’t care.
suddenly he shifts his face from amusement to a rather sarcastic-looking pout, his performance not very convincing with the smug look still shining in his eyes. you’re sure that those upturned, almond-shaped eyes and the dark circles underneath them couldn’t appear innocent even if they tried.
“you know it’s rude to run into people like that, i could’ve gotten hurt.”
you can’t help the unimpressed pinch of your eyebrows at his words, especially as you crane your neck to look up at the boy who nearly knocked you over despite your momentum.
“i didn’t mean to.” your words are more clipped than you mean for them to be, your alarm overpowering the control over your voice.
“running in the halls is against the rules, you know.” he clicks his tongue, shaking his head as you begin to try and walk around him. “but you’d never break the rules, right?”
you pause at the strange inflection in his voice with his last sentence, his words loaded with a different motive. turning around, you see a flash of satisfaction across his face, and you feel like a rabbit just caught in a hunter’s snare. his hand reaches into his pocket, pulling out his phone.
“…what?”
long legs stride forward, his torso hunching over as he leans towards you, facing his screen around for you to see. the picture very clearly shows you on top of ivy, hair wild as you pin her down, fist pummeling into her face.
you remember now, seeing him at the end of the hall as you stood up, curiously staring at you. you didn’t remember seeing a phone in his hand, but that must’ve been why he was there.
“i gotta say, you did an impressive number on her. i swear i thought she fucked up your face a little too, but you came back the next day all badass like nothing happened.”
“what do you want?”
“woah,” he grins, holding his hands up in defense. “no need to get aggressive. i just thought you might need some persuasion. to hang out with me and my friends today.”
“…you’re blackmailing me… to be your friend.”
he snickers, sliding his finger across his phone screen to show more pictures. others clearly show ivy being in the fault. one showing her fingers yanking back on aphmau’s ponytail as you two try to walk away, another of you pulling aphmau behind you defensively, and another of her ripping her nails into your hair and face.
“i don’t know if i’d like to call it blackmailing. after all, i could bend this situation any way i want. really, it just depends on if you’d give me a chance. i promise, i’m really not as bad as i seem.”
at first you say nothing, eyebrows furrowed as you try to catch one of the many thoughts that frantically race around in your brain for a solution.
“i’m sure laurance said otherwise,” gene continues. “but we’re really not awful people. i mean, we’re not great either, but we’re cool. besides, i think you want someone like me on your team in case the mrs.ro’meave-wannabe in this picture here decides to yap about what happened.”
you stare at the screen, heart racing. not only were you at risk, but so was aphmau. had he caught her in the halls today, too?
“just give it a try, this is your choice here. why don’t you have lunch with us outside by the bleachers today so we can get to know each other? i know a secret of yours, so if we become friends i can share a secret of mine with you.”
“are you secretly normal?”
laughter bursts from his mouth, and for a moment he looks so genuinely entertained with your words that the youthfulness in his young age actually shines through his rugged appearance. you’re not sure if you maybe secretly pissed him off or if he strangely liked the attitude you were giving him, so you find yourself standing there awkwardly as he gathers himself.
“no, not really.” he begins to walk away from you while shaking his head, more chuckles leaving his throat as he slides his phone back into his pocket and makes his way down the hall. “see you at lunch.”
“…shit.”
you ended up zoning out for the rest of your morning classes, your head empty despite its screams to try and find a solution to this. garroth and katelyn sent wary glances your way pretty much the whole day, but left it alone when you didn’t tell them for the third time when they asked. as the lunch bell rang, you made the excuse that you weren’t feeling the best, and was gonna see if the nurse would give you some medicine. they shrugged, giving you one last worried look before making their way to your friend group in the cafeteria.
you were pretty sure eating outside was against the school’s rules, so your heart was racing when you made your way to the doors that led to all of the athletic fields. after your stressful searching you soon find the three of them behind the bleachers near the soccer field.
gene and the angry-looking boy lounge on the ground, and the silver haired girl is perched on one of the thick beams holding the bleachers up. their attention is immediately set on you as they hear the ground crunch under your feet, all three eyes turned to where you awkwardly stand.
“there she is.” gene gets up and strides towards you, throwing an arm around your shoulder and guiding you closer to his group.
he smells like cigarettes covered by cologne and… paint? your eyes meet a can of spray paint in the other boy’s hand before trailing up to see an sk symbol freshly graffitied onto one of the thicker pillars.
on school property? guess laurance wasn’t exaggerating about them.
“since laurance so rudely interrupted our introduction to you last time, let’s reintroduce ourselves, yeah? i’m gene hyun,” he gestures to himself, deep voice almost lifting in a teasing way  before pointing at his friends. “that’s sasha morozov, and that’s zenix brandt. say hi, everyone.”
“you’re already breaking the rules, i like this new look on you.” sasha speaks up first, lips curling up in a smile that didn’t meet her eyes. “it would be nice to not be the only girl in this group.”
“can’t take the pressure, sasha?” zenix teases with a grin.
“or maybe i just can’t stand your face, zenix.”
“shut up, you love me.”
“i’m not that desperate.”
zenix scoffs. “me neither.”
“will you two quiet down? you’ll scare away our new friend here. hey, we introduced ourselves to you, so now it’s only polite for you to do the same.” gene nudges your shoulder once before letting you go.
you shortly give your name, chest brewing with an uncomfortable fog as you debate just running back inside. either way you risked your reputation, so your feet end up sticking to the ground as you swallow at the dry feeling in your throat.
“you didn’t get anything to eat?” sasha questions, sleepy eyes pointedly looking down at your empty hands.
you look down at them as well, as if you hadn’t very purposefully walked past the cafeteria so no one knew you were off doing something you weren’t supposed to. you turn to glance back towards the school, before looking back to shrug at the girl.
“um… no, i forgot.”
dark silvery eyebrows turn up unimpressed before she plucks an apple off of her tray and tosses it to you. it catches you off guard and you clumsily catch it, fumbling and nearly dropping it down into the gravel.
“…thanks.”
she shrugs, humming a small “mhm” in return.
“…hm. you know, thinking about it, i dunno about that name.” gene suddenly says.
“right? i think we should give her a nickname instead.”
…what? your name wasn’t hard to pronounce in the slightest. before you can protest they’re already discussing the matter, tossing around name ideas they should give you like you were their new pet.
“what about dolly? since she’ll be running our errands for us like a little doll.”
“no, that’s too much. hm… she really did give a good beating on ivy despite being smaller than her, she’s got claws. how about kitty?”
“hm, a cute pet’s name, i like it.” sasha says, leg swinging off the side of where she sat.
“sasha and kitty for sk. i like it.” zenix adds, smile taunting as he looks at you.
your eyebrows pinch together, voice tight in irritation. “my name isn’t hard. i don’t need a nickname.”
gene’s eyebrow raises, challenging as he tilts his head.
“oh? sounds like the voice of someone who’s bold enough to let a picture of her fighting skills spread around.”
you scoff.
“listen. i hate to say it, kitty, but we have the upper hand here. we know it’s a bit devious, but we just want you to join us. you wouldn’t reject people wanting to be your friend, would you? especially ones that are also bad and break the rules.”
“i’m not going to—”
“no? well if that picture starts floating around who do you think will be your friend? us, or those goody two shoes friends you hang out with?”
“it’s none of their business what happened.” you snap, your brain scrambling for responses and too exhausted from the conversation to come up with any.
“then why don’t you say that to one of them?” gene hums in taunting amusement, head tilting as he looks at you through his lashes. “look behind you.”
your heart thuds and drops in your chest as you turn to see laurance, walking up to you in his soccer uniform, eyes narrowing at gene.
“is he bothering you?” he looks to you, brows furrowed.
your mouth drops open, trying to find something to say. his eyes seem to catch onto the draining of the blood from your face, his hand reaching out to grab your arm and pull you closer to his side.
“come on, you don’t need to be hanging out with—”
“no need to get so defensive, laurance. she wants to hang out with us.” gene cuts him off.
laurance freezes, eyes narrowing as he looks between you and the trio. “huh?”
gene stares at you, a toothy grin on his sharp features.
“yeah,” you barely keep your voice steady as everyone focuses on you. “they’re not so bad once you get to know them.”
“…what?” laurance questions again, as if he thought he was hallucinating your words.
“yeah, she’s a real sweet girl. i really think i’m starting to see the error of my ways because of her.” gene takes a few steps closer.
“really?” laurance asks, tone disbelieving.
“yeah! in fact she was just telling us to stop hanging back here and tagging up the place. i’ve never felt more moved.”
sasha and zenix nod along to his words, taking his lead as he looks to them. gene then waltzes right up to you, handing you a crumpled and folded slip of paper.
“here’s my number. text me later, i may need some help on my homework later. why don’t you go with laurance and we’ll catch you later.” he chuckles. “i can really picture our friendship blossoming.”
you give a half-hearted breath of a laugh in return, backing up with laurance.
“okay, later.”
you feel sick.
“are you okay?” laurance asks you once you’re out of earshot, leading you to the benches where the soccer team sits, the area pretty empty at the moment other than a few players practicing on the field.
“huh? oh yeah, i’m good.”
he stares at you, fingers tapping against the other.
“…you sure? you know, those three are really good at acting and putting up a front. i really don’t think—”
“i know! trust me, it’s fine.”
his eyebrows furrow like he wants to say something but changes his mind, glancing back at the empty bleachers you were just behind.
“you know eating outside during lunch is against the rules though, don’t you?”
you hold back a sigh.
“…no, i didn’t know.”
laurance sighs looking at the apple still clutched in your hands. “…is that all you have for lunch?”
“oh, yeah. i forgot to… get some.”
he looks back up at you, before reaching into the soccer team’s snack box and handing you chips and a cheese stick.
“you don’t need to—”
“eat.” he raises a challenging eyebrow when you hesitate, lips curling up in appeasement when you start peeling open the cheese wrapper.
a call of your name falls from his lips, prompting you to look up into concerned eyes.
“be careful.”
as you change in the locker room out of your sweaty athletics uniform, your phone buzzes on the bench.
gene: meet me near the back of the school
you suppress a sigh, keeping your face neutral in front of your group of girl friends beside you.
you: ok
aphmau was able to catch you alone in the hallways at one point, round eyes wide with worry. apparently she had also been confronted by gene, but that guy from her werewolf class had supposedly interrupted their talk, cutting the confrontation short.
you weren’t as lucky, you groaned internally, as you swung open the back doors to the school, finding your way down the stairs and spotting gene by the fence line. he’s changed into casual clothes rather than his school uniform, you note, the dark and grungy clothes a polar difference from the neat school uniform he was forced to wear.
“…what is it?”
“walk with me to my house.”
any anxiety you feel is overridden as you shoot a sharp glare up at him, nose wrinkling in disgust. “no. why would i do that? are you some kind of pervert?”
gene barks out a laugh, head throwing back as he holds up his arms defensively. “woah, put the claws away, kitty! it’s nothing like that. i won’t claim i’m a good guy, but i’m not a total piece of shit either. i need you to meet my mom.”
“…what.”
“i’ll explain on the walk there.” he nods at you to walk along with him, beginning to make his way down the street.
you hesitate, teeth gritting. before you realize it your feet have carried you after him, catching up to the long-legged boy.
“if you try anything i’ll beat the shit out of you. i don’t care if you’re bigger and taller, i’ll find a way.” you threaten, even if you weren’t confident in your own words.
gene seems amused by your threat, something you’ve begun to notice as a trend. “unless you were forced to take taekwondo as a kid i’m afraid you have no chance. i can appreciate your attitude, though. having a backbone looks good on you.”
you release a quiet sigh, glancing over warily at his tall frame, noticing the bit of lean muscle that cling to him. despite being on the thinner side, you knew he was most definitely right.
“what is it you want me to do?”
he hums. “ah, right. so, my mom’s been on my ass lately about hanging out with sasha and zenix too much… saying they’re bad influences.”
he scoffs, hands tucked into the pockets of his black jacket.
“i just need you to pretend like you’re a new friend of mine, helping me out with school and otherwise being a good influence. should be easy enough for you, you don’t need to even act.”
you huff. “why choose me?”
“why not? besides you doing this for me… and the whole picture thing… you seem pretty cool. maybe i just want to be friends.”
you don’t say anything to that, instead sending him a wary glance as he barks out an amused laugh in return.
on the way the two of you make it to a gas station, where gene turns to walk towards its doors rather than continue down the sidewalk, much to your chagrin.
when your footsteps stop from behind him he turns, looking back at you with a sigh.
“listen, i don’t live in a shady part of town necessarily, but at least come inside with me.” he says, his usual teasing cadence gone as he waves you to him.
though he wasn’t implying anything you feel a shiver run up your spine, fingers drifting to zianna’s locket as your eyes drift around at the cars passing by. you spot one, all black, parked near the side of the building.
black rims, black paint, blacked out lights, blacked out windows.
no, it’s nothing.
plenty of people have all black cars.
but…
quickly, you shuffle after gene, listening to the doorbell chime as you rush into the door after him.
he gives you a questioning look. the one time he wasn’t really trying to tease or scare you and you looked the most scared. he doesn’t question it though, instead telling you to look around while he buys what he needs.
you sigh, walking down the store aisles, eyes drifting to the different candies. turning to go to the next aisle you nearly bump into a taller man. he looked average. tanned skin and brown hair… but when you look into his eyes…
there’s a certain emptiness to the shade of brown you look into. something cruel and unforgiving—something you didn’t even see in gene’s. despite their warm color, they lacked any sense of care. it sends a cold chill starting from your cheeks and down your back, like someone had dumped ice water over your head.
“excuse me.” you mutter, shuffling past him and quickly putting yourself right next to where gene stood.
he glances at you from the corner of his eye, turning to see the man in the aisle. it’s a few seconds where he doesn’t say anything, face cold and unexpressive as he stares down the man until he leaves the store empty-handed.
the cashier, a rather unimpressed looking woman in her mid twenties glances over to you, raising a thinly plucked eyebrow.
“this your new girlfriend or something?” she glances down at your uniform, lip curling as she stares judgmentally back at gene. “...she looks a little young.”
“what? no, don’t be ridiculous,” gene scoffs. “just my little brothers friend. she’s coming home to study with him, so i’m walking her.”
the cashier deadpans at him. “yeah, okay. if you’re buying these for that lil’ girl i can’t sell em to you.”
“does it look like i’m buying these for her?” he gestures to you with one of his hands, giving an exasperated look to the cashier. “i mean she looks like she makes all a’s and never gets in trouble. c’mon.”
your eyebrows furrow. sell what to him?
the cashier looks you up and down for a moment before sighing, reaching down to the cabinets below her and pulling out a red cigarette case. your eyes widen and you look to gene, who only scoldingly stares you down from the corner of his eye.
“don’t say a thing and act natural.” is what you read from the dark blue irises challenging you to say something before he slides the money over the counter.
the cashier checks him out, narrowing her hooded green eyes at you once more with a concerned glint to them before humming. “you’re good to go. see you later.”
“thanks, donna.” gene casually replies, shoving the cigs in his pocket and ushering you out of the store.
you two walk in silence for a moment, making it a ways down the street before he reaches into the back of his jean pockets, pulling out one of the cigarettes and an old lighter. he lights one, huffing out the smoke and glancing down at you.
“want one?”
you shake your head. he shrugs, stepping around you to walk on your other side when he sees you blink rapidly from the smoke blowing in your eyes.
“more for me.” he smirks, taking another deep inhale and looking away, slowly letting out his next breath.
“…how did you even buy those?” you ask, frowning as he flicks ash onto the concrete.
he reaches into his pocket, pulling out his wallet and sliding out not his normal id, but instead another version that was flipped horizontally, the “under 21” warning nowhere to be seen.
“fake id.” he shrugs. “been using it since last year.”
it’s about ten more minutes before the roll of nicotine meets the end of its life. gene stops, crouching down for a second to snuff it out, before carelessly flicking it out onto the street.
“littering?” you narrow your eyes.
“what? it’ll decompose.”
“no, it won’t. not for a long time.”
“whatever.”
“littering is really lame.”
gene scoffs, rolling his eyes. “c’mon, kitty. loosen up. the world will keep spinning to see another day.”
you huff, running back to scoop up the discarded cigarette, still warm from both its flame and staying snugly between gene’s fingers. he stops to look at you, eyebrows raised and pinched, the corner of his mouth turned down in confused amusement. you walk back to him, flipping up the top of the box that still hung out of his jeans and shoving the cigarette down into the empty spot.
he raises a brow before his head tilts back in silent laughter, eyes closed.
“okay, fine, miss goody two shoes.” he laughs, before turning onto the pathway up to a dull blue house. “remember, just act like you’re a new friend of mine helping me out with my grades.”
he pulls out a key chain, unlocking the door and waving you inside. “hey mom, i have someone i want you to meet.”
the inside of the house… is not the environment that you’d expect for a guy like gene to live in. it was perfectly clean, the furniture neat and the fresh scent of lemons and lavender clinging to the air.
an older woman with a taller stature than you and lighter gray-blue hair appears from the hallway, face stern as she looks at her son.
“a new friend? if they’re anything like—” she stops her train of thought when her eyes land on you, face changing to a friendlier expression. “oh, hello sweetie. you’re… gene’s friend?”
gene huffs. “don’t sound too surprised.”
you control your breathing, already feeling guilty pulling in your chest as you prepare yourself to lie to this woman. you raise your hand to shake hers with a small smile, nodding along.
“yes ma’am. it’s nice to meet you.”
“it’s nice to meet you too! i’m maria.” her face is brightened as she grabs onto your hand, shaking it back. “oh, gene, honey. i’m surprised such a proper-looking and lovely girl wants to talk to you! she’s adorable.”
“what?” he sighs, looking much less intimidating than usual as he watches his tongue in front of his mother. “…anyways, mom, she’s been helping me with school. she makes amazing grades and never gets in trouble… right…?”
you nod.
“wow, i can’t believe you made friends outside of that little club of yours—”
“—it’s a gang—”
“—i’m so proud. do you need a ride home, sweetie? gene and i were just going to leave for dance lessons.”
“oh, that’s okay. i can walk.”
maria shakes her head. “oh, but a girl like you shouldn’t walk alone on the streets, especially with the traffic right now. we’re not necessarily in a dangerous part of town, but still.”
you freeze, before nodding. “if you don’t mind, that would be nice.”
“of course not! gene lets go.” she nods, pulling her keys out of the purse on her shoulder and walking out the front door.
you two stand there for a moment before you turn to gene with a raised eyebrow, a smirk fighting to break out on your face.
“…dance lessons?”
his nose crinkles before he bends his torso, the scent of cigarettes still fresh on his breath as he slits his eyes at you.
“don’t you dare utter a word of that to anyone, or everyone in the school will know about that picture.” he whispers, before straightening himself and pacing forward towards the door. “c’mon, sweetie, time to go home.”

Harry Potter » Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier
December 11th
Pairings: Boyfriend!Bucky Barnes x Girlfriend!Reader
Summary: Y/N knows exactly what she’s getting Bucky for Christmas after overhearing his conversation with Steve and Sam.
Warnings: Fluff, language, kissing, pet names (doll)
A/N: I don’t know much about Harry Potter. This is based off of what I heard on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Written on my phone so sorry if there’s any mistakes or typos.
GIF IS NOT MINE! Credit goes to the creators. I found this one on Google.

You were walking through the Avengers Compound, looking for Bucky to visit him at work. You frowned when you couldn’t find him. You heard voices when you got closer to the lounge room. You stopped before you got to the door and listened for a moment.
“Theres no such thing as witches.” Bucky says.
“I have to agree with Bucky.” Steve says.
“What about Doctor Strange?” Sam says.
“He’s a sorcerer.” Bucky says, squinting his eyes at him.
“A sorcerer without a hat!” Sam argues.
“Oh my god.” Bucky sighs. “Who are you gonna fight now? Gandolf?” He says.
“Wait, how do you know about Gandolf?” Sam asks.
“I read the Hobbit in 1937 when it first came out.” Bucky says.
“So you guys see my point?” Sam says.
“No we don’t.” Bucky says.
That’s when you walked in the room and their attention was on you. Bucky smiles and approaches you.
“Hey, doll.” Bucky kisses your lips. “What are you doing here?” He asks.
“I wanted to visit my handsome superhero boyfriend at work.” You smiled up at him. “By the way, is all you three talk about is Harry Potter when I’m not around?” You asked.
“How much did you hear?” He asks.
“Just enough to know that my 106 year old boyfriend is a nerd.” You giggled.
Sam bursted out laughing and Steve bit his bottom lip to keep himself from laughing.
“I don’t know why you two are laughing. You guys are nerds too.” You say making Bucky laugh.
You knew exactly what you’re going to get Bucky for Christmas now. The next day, you went to the nearest bookstore after Bucky left for work. You looked around the bookstore, looking for the books you’re getting Bucky.
“Is there something I can help you find?” An employee asks.
“Actually yes. I’m trying to find the Harry Potter books for my boyfriend. You say.
“They’re in the corner to the right. They’ll be on one of the middle shelves.” She smiles, pointing you in the right direction.
“Thank you.” You smiled.
“You’re welcome. Let me know if you need anything else.” She says before walking away.
You walked in the direction she pointed you in and looked through the middle shelves. You smiled when you finally found what you were looking for. You picked up the set of books from the shelf and went to checkout.
“Did you find everything you were looking for?” The cashier asks.
“Yes I did.” You say with a smile.
She scans the books and tells you the total. You paid and made your way to your favorite coffee shop to get something to drink before going home. When you got home, you were walking to yours and Bucky’s bedroom to wrap his Christmas present without noticing that Bucky was home.
“You’re not going to give me a hug and a kiss, doll?” Bucky says.
You yelped and quickly turned around, holding your hand over your chest.
“Bucky! When did you get home?” You asked.
“Like 15 minutes ago. I texted you saying that I was able to get off of work early so we can spend some time together.” He explains. “What’s in the bag?” He asks, reaching for it.
“That’s a surprise!” You move your hand further away. “You have to wait until Christmas.” You say, walking away.
Bucky tilted his head back and playfully groaned making you giggle. You went to the bedroom and locked the door behind you so Bucky didn’t try to come in and see you wrapping his present. You found some red and white striped wrapping paper and wrapped it with ease, topping it off with a silver bow. You put a tag on it saying “To Bucky my love, love your doll”. You sat there for a moment, debating on whether or not to give it to Bucky or wait until Christmas. “It wouldn’t hurt to give him an early Christmas present, right? Screw it.” You thought to yourself. You quickly cleaned up the little mess you made and grabbed the present, walking to the living room with it behind your back and sat down on the couch next to Bucky.
“I have something for you.” You say, handing him his present.
“What is it?” Bucky asks.
“Just open it and you’ll find out.” You say.
Bucky tore the wrapping paper off and a smile grew on his face.
“Do you like it?” You asked nervously.
“Like it? Doll, I love it!” He says, kissing your cheek.
“I’m happy that you love it.” You say with a smile.
“I haven’t read these since 1937.” He says, looking at the books.
“Maybe you can read one of them to me if you want.” You suggested.
“I’d like that.” Bucky says softly.
You cuddled yourself into Bucky’s side as he opened the book. About halfway through the book, Bucky noticed that you had fallen asleep. He bookmarked the page by folding the top corner. He picked you up bridal style and carried you to the bedroom, gently laying you on the bed and covered you up. Bucky got in bed next to you, pulling you to his side and wrapped his arms around you.
“Goodnight, doll. I love you.” Bucky says softly and kissed the top of your head.
“Goodnight, Bucky. I love you too.” You say sleepily.

hi jess, congrats on your milestone! can i request the prompt:  “god you’re bleeding! how the hell did you do that?” “i was trying to cut the tomatoes!” for nanami with a reader who doesn’t really know how to cook. thank u <3
hi friend ! sorry for taking so long to get to this, i hope you enjoy !! <3 srry for any typos not proofread :(
Tumblr media
dinner was usually a task nanami did by himself. taking the time to decompress and make a loving meal for the two of you, often times having you hand him seasonings when you watched.
it wasn’t that you didn’t want to cook, in fact you always begged him to let you help out, you didn’t want the burden to weigh heavily on his shoulders. it was a matter of you being a terrible cook.
the first time you’d attempted to make chicken for the two of you, the edges were burnt and you’d somehow managed to leave the center just a tinge pink. when you tried to make breakfast in bed for him, the eggs weren’t completely cooked, causing nanami to spend a couple hours in the restroom.
and so there you stood, counting down the hours until your beloved kento walked through the front doors. you could picture it now, the candles lit, him in his uniform with his loose tie and sleeves rolled up.
‘oh honey did you do all this for me?’
‘course i did baby! i can cook now, you have one less thing to worry about’
‘you’re so perfect my y/n, I’m never going to leave you’
your daydream was cut short by the burning smell coming from the stove, eyes wide as you cursed, opening a window and throwing out the burnt chicken.
it’s fine, you thought, i still have two hours left, i can do this!
you did not have this.
there were bandaids on three of your fingers, the poorly cut veggies sitting in a bowl besides you as you grabbed the tomato. you were completely focused, so focused that you didn’t hear nanami open the door, much less his footsteps over the sound of the sizzling in the pans next to you.
and as you went for the first cut of the tomato, your eyes wandered to the window, seeing his reflection. for some reason your hand didn’t register your brain telling it stop chopping, leading to you cutting yet another finger.
“ken hi!” you smiled, setting the knife down and walking over to the sink, letting the warm water flow over the fresh cut.
“hello my lov- oh my god are you bleeding?” he was quick to rush to your side, eyes wide as he took your hands in his, “how the hell did you do that? it’s so deep!” his honey eyes are looking into yours with worry, “let me get a bandaid” he’s kissing the top of your head softly before b-lining to the restroom, emerging with a bandaid in hand seconds later.
“i was trying to cut the tomatoes” you mumble, a pour on your lips.
it’s after he’s placed the bandaid over your cut with the softest hands, kissing over it gently and looking at you with pure adoration in his eyes that the scene of it all finally hits him.
“why are you cooking?” there’s a smile he’s fighting off his lips, but he’s losing very badly, especially when you furrow your brows up at him and cross your arms over your chest.
“I can’t cook for my lover anymore? what is this an interrogation?” your defensive tone only has him melting even more, glancing over the stove and pointing.
“what’s that supposed to be?” your shoulders slump at yet another piece of butchered meat, mumbling a ‘chicken’ before sighing.
“i just wanted to make your day easier” your eyes meeting his as you continue, “you’ve been so exhausted and i wanted to lift at least some of that weight off your shoulders” you’re uncrossing your arms, fiddling with your fingers before he’s taking one of your hands in his, the other coming under your chin, tilting your head up towards him.
“you already make my days easier, my love” his voice calming as he smiled down at you, “you don’t know how much you do for me.” there’s sincerity dripping off his words, and the way he’s looking at you has your knees a little weak.
“cmon little chef, let’s order takeout” he smiles, sweeping you off your feet and placing you on the couch, handing you his phone, “choose whatever you want, I’ll be back after i shower” he says, kissing your forehead before walking into your shared bedroom.
maybe you couldn’t bare the burden of cooking, but you could always manage to make him smile and his days a little brighter with your soft smiles and gentle touches.

Dayquil, Curses, and Soulmates
Tumblr media
Paring: Toge inumaki x gn! reader
Summary: In a world where soulmates are real, you get a bond that is quite annoying per say, you feel each other's pain, and your soulmate happens to be the one guy in the world that has a lifetime supply of throat medicine.
Word count: 1698
Warnings: talk of explosion, talk of medicine, talk of pain, putting these just in case cause you never know
A/n: thought this was a fun idea, let me know how you like it, and big thanks to @just-jordie-things for the bit about bumping into each other buying cough medicine. Also if you catch my reference you get a cookie. please ignore any typos, i might come back and fix it later. If I mention school I mean college.  MINORS AND AGELESS BLOGS DO NOT INTERACT
For as long as i could remember i have always got random pain in my throat. I couldn’t explain it but I would describe it as if I swallowed sandpaper. When I was younger it used to happen all of the time. One moment I was fine and being a happy kid and the next I was coughing like I hadn't had water in days. Around the age of five though my parents took me to the doctor to see if they could figure it out. Turns out that out of all the soulmate connections I could have, I’m stuck sharing pain with my soulmate. I couldn’t help but wonder what my soulmate was doing at such a young age to cause such pain so often.
At around the age of ten or so it stopped happening as often, but when it happened it sucked. I got used to always carrying around a bottle of cough medicine for when it happened so I could at least talk with less pain. I still have no clue as to what my soulmate does to give us such terrible sore throats but I'm at least glad they slowed down a bit.
Today was a normal Saturday which means going out to check the shops for any cool trinkets I might want and get some snacks. Even though I was going out to get fun things, my first stop was the corner store to pick up some more cough medicine as I ran out last week and forgot to get more.
I swear when I meet my soulmate they are paying me back for all this cough medicine I have to buy. I thought to myself as I entered the store I have been a regular at for the past two years since starting school. I waved at the shop keeper as I walked off to the medicine aisle to grab my usual travel bottle of cough syrup and an extra just in case. As I reached for the medicine my hand bumped into someone else who seemed to be reaching for the same thing as me.
“Oh, I’m sorry you were here first; you can go ahead.” I said looking up at the stranger. Looking at them I would guess that they were a boy about my age with fluffy white hair and beautiful purple eyes. I also noticed he was wearing a school uniform with what looked like an extra-long collar covering the lower half of his face. Even though I was confused by it, I tried not to stare at the handsome stranger in front of me.
He looked almost shocked when I spoke to him. He gave me a small nod, grabbed the medicine and walked away. I couldn’t help but wonder why he hadn’t said anything but brushed it off as him being shy. After he reached the register, I finally snapped out of my trance and grabbed my own bottles of cough medicine and headed to the front.
“Hey, there Y/n. Soulmate causing trouble again?” asked Ukai, the owner of the small business who is used to me coming in every couple week.
“Yeah, I wonder what they keep doing to cause this cause it's so annoying not being able to talk for an hour because of the pain.” I responded not noticing the stranger from earlier freezing up for a second before leaving the store.
“Well kiddo, I hope you find them soon so you get some answers.” He responded as he handed me my bag. “Have a good day and good luck with the soulmate.”
After waving goodbye to the man behind the counter who was always kind to me I made my way towards the shops for the day. I was ready to just enjoy my time alone with my thoughts, mostly plotting revenge on my soulmate for this pain, but also just enjoying the fresh air.
After a few hours I noticed it starting to get dark and decided it was probably best to head home before my parents get concerned. I also don’t really enjoy being out when it gets dark. I don't know how to explain it but other than the annoying soulmate connection, ever since I was kid I could see these weird creatures. As I got older I started ignoring them but whenever I go out at night it seems like there's a lot more, and they give me the creeps.
As I was passing an alleyway I heard rustling and paused to look and see if it was an animal or something, boy was I wrong. As I looked down the alleyway towards the sound one of the creatures, that I feel like only I can see, lunged towards me. Long dark claws stretched out towards me, right as it was about to sink its claws into my arm I heard what sounded like someone running up from the side, and a voice yelling to move. I’m not sure what came over me, it was like my feet had a mind of their own and I jumped out of the way.
“EXPLODE” was the next thing I heard the voice say before the creature did just that. It exploded in a large cloud of smoke. Almost immediately after that thing exploded, I was thrown into my own terrible coughing fits, but what was even weirder was I could make out the sound of someone else coughing as well. I reached for the cough medicine I bought earlier and drank half of the first bottle, as large amounts were the only thing that helped.
“What the hell was that?” I rasped out as best I could waiting for the medicine to start working. The person who had saved me looked up at me with a look of shock on his face. It was at that moment I recognized that it was the same guy from earlier. I could tell it was him from his white hair and uniform jacket that now had the collar unzipped, with the collar no longer hiding the lower half of his face. I could make out what looked like strange tattoos on either side of his mouth.
I probably also had a look of shock on my face as I pieced everything together. One this guy could see the weird creatures as well, two he somehow made me move and that thing explode with just words. Last and most important, this guy is my soulmate, it just makes sense it can’t be a coincidence that my soulmate would get a throat pain right as this guy saves me, causing his own coughing fit. I was sure of it and judging by the look on his face he figured it out as well.
I waited for a moment as I watched him scramble for something in his pocket, and he let out a sound of triumph as he pulled out his phone and walked closer to me while typing out a message. He motioned for me to look at the screen. Sorry for making you spend so much on cough medicine, It's part of my job kinda. I looked at him slightly confused as he started typing again.
“Why do you keep typing, why not voice what's up instead?” I asked, not understanding fully why this guy who just made something explode with his voice is now refusing to talk. I watched as he shook his head at me and pointed to his phone again. My throat is still messed up, but I also can’t talk like you do. I could explain more over dinner tomorrow if that's ok with you? He asked me using his phone's note app. I looked at him skeptically for a second, but the agreed and gave him my phone number to text me the details.
“I’m Y/n, by the way, if we’re soulmates I figure we should probably know each other's names” I said as he started typing again. It's nice to meet you Y/n, I’m Toge Inumaki, but you can just call me Toge. After I finished reading the message on his phone I looked up into his kind purple eyes and knew that this was the start of something great. “I can’t wait to go out tomorrow, and also find out whats up with that thing that you blew up.” I said with a chuckle
“Salmon” I heard the boy next to me rasp out, his voice sounding more messed up than mine did when I first spoke a minute ago. I looked at him confused for a second before I felt my phone go off in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a message from an unknown number. Hey, it's me, your soulmate, what I mean by salmon is I can't wait for tomorrow either. I also promise to explain everything, I bet this is all kinda weird :)  I read the message and smiled back at him as his face lit up with one of the brightest smiles I had ever seen.
“Well it's getting late, I should be getting home. I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye Toge.” I said waving to him as I walked off hearing a small “salmon” and catching him waving before zipping his collar and walking the opposite direction.
I was a few blocks away and almost home when my phone went off again: get homesafe, if you need me text please. Have a goodnight.  I smiled at the message and responded with an ok, you too. After the small text exchange I finally made it home, I went up stairs and went to bed happy with how the day went. I may have been almost attacked by a weird creature that most people apparently can’t see, but I finally met my soulmate. I can’t wait to get to know him and maybe find out why i was saying salmon so much but hey that's a problem for tomorrow.
I drifted off to sleep with the thoughts of my soulmate and some slight planning on how to get revenge for the non stop sore throats without causing pain, cause that would be counterproductive.

Chapter 1: “Hey, lol.”
✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼✼  ҉✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼✼ ҉
Fall wasn’t your favorite season. From the stress of studying for finals to worrying about flight tickets back home when winter rolled around, you were never the biggest fan of the autumn months. With the combination of your busy schedule and your failure to get a refill on your anxiety medication, you felt immensely overwhelmed. Another thing to note was how lonely it got; Your family was across the country. Going to school in California was a conscious decision of yours, but you didn’t consider how tiresome it’d get not experiencing the warm embrace of a loved one in your times of need. To even take a trip back home would take you nearly 2 days, and that was simply not a risk you were willing to take with how dingy your car was.
Your Friday’s typically consisted of this: Breakfast at the café off campus, lectures from 9 am to 12 pm, lunch at 12:30 pm accompanied with a small break, occasional seminars for an hour or so, then you were done. You’d usually study for a little while, but there were no promises. Being a second year psych student had its pros and cons; Less free time throughout the weekdays but completely free weekends. Though the pros outweigh the cons, you could use a bit more time to yourself throughout the week. As you were far from home, you had to make completely new friends. The vibe in California was completely different. You spent the entirety of your first year in your dorm in online school due to your school’s strict precautions against the pandemic, so you’d be stripped of the chance of branching out. While you weren’t the only one who went through this, it was 10x harder for you to go back to normal; Social anxiety had been something you’d struggled with all your life. The fear you felt when in big crowds, when being assigned to group projects, even merely walking to your class on campus…really…sucked. Tasked with the responsibility of your own finances, health insurance was something you simply couldn’t afford. Therefore, you hadn’t been on your meds for God knows how long. But anyway, you wouldn’t stay on such a depressing topic.
Moving on, you had the weekend to yourself. You’d finished your last lecture around 2 pm and made your way back to your dorm. Fortunately, your roommate hadn’t made it back from her classes, so you had the space all to yourself. You locked the door behind you and took a breath of fresh air.
“Finally.” You sighed to yourself, plopping down onto your bed. Shoes were thrown about and you laid in your bed, indulging in the feeling of relief. But, as expected, it was cut short almost immediately.
Multiple knocks were sounded upon the door. It was nobody but Ningning, your lab partner in Abnormal Psych Stats 2. She was a sweet girl, she truly was. However, she always found a way to be overbearing. But you appreciate her as she was the only reason you ever left your room.
You slowly but surely got up to open the door, greeted by Ningning with a big smile.
“Y/N, were you lying down?” She asked, leaning against the door frame.
“I was, but now I’m up. Come, come.” You told her, moving out of the way so she could come in.
She walked in, closing the door behind her and sat on your bed as you spruced up your desk.
You glanced over at her, noticing that she was biting her lip and she only ever did that when she was holding back from saying something.
“Oh God, what is it?” You groaned, knowing she was about to say something outlandish.
She smiled and sat up, “Okay, don’t be mad but I booked us two tickets at this restaurant over in Malibu. Yes, I know it’s a long drive BUT…it’s worth it. Please tell me you’ll come with me, pleaseeeee…”
You sighed, rubbing your jaw, “I can’t.” Her smile faded, turning into a frown, “I don’t have the funds for that. I just planned on grabbing a meal from the dining hall…I’m trying to save up for a plane ticket.”
She shook her head, “Don’t worry about the costs, I’ll pay, it’ll be my treat. I wasn’t in town on your birthday and I want to make up for my absence. As your best, and ONLY friend, it’s my job to treat you. So, what do you say?”
You sighed to yourself, again. You hadn’t planned on doing anything tonight. You really were looking forward to having some down time to just relax and catch up on some shows. You also weren’t the type to depend on someone to pay for your meal, but one time wouldn’t hurt, right?
“Alright. Fine. When?” You asked her, stacking papers atop of each other.
“Today, tonight, let’s leave before 6 pm since our reservation is at 8:00.” She said, “I figured we could stay the night? If we left by 6 and got there at 7:30 ish, we could check into our reservation and stay at a nearby hotel. It’d be nice to take a break and be on our own for a while.”
You nodded, ‘That sounds nice…but costly? Where’s all this money coming from, Ningning?”
She smiled, “Let’s just say…my job is treating me well. Now, pack a bag, be ready by 5.” She hurried up and kissed your cheek as she made her way out of your room, closing the door behind you.
So, a trip. A mini girls trip for a night. You were excited, actually. It’s been a while since you had a chance to take a break. You’ve never been to Malibu either. This should be fun.
Later on, you finished packing a small bag with a few essentials. You changed into an outfit you thought fit the Malibu vibe: A black halter top with beige flowy pants and matching back sandals. You clipped a mango-ish colored flower into your hair after you slicked it back into a ponytail and grabbed your bag. You touched yourself up a bit before walking out of your dorm and made your way down the hall. You knocked on Ningning’s dorm and waited for her to open it.
Once she did, she met you with a smile and walked out with her bag, locking the door behind her. “You look so cute, Y/N. We’re going to have so much fun, trust me.”

You two soon made it to the restaurant with not a lot of time to spare as it was 8:00 on the dot. Ningning quickly found a parking spot and you both agreed to find a hotel after you ate.
From the outside looking in, the restaurant was beautiful. It was right beside a beach with a beautiful view of the ocean; Moonshadows Malibu was its name, it truly was something you thought you’d never see in real life. As you two made your way inside, you were hit by the aroma of vanilla and solemn music, only adding to the overall dreamy vibe. A pretty lady at the front greeted you both with a wide smile. She held up two shell necklaces, “Would you ladies like a necklace?” Ningning looked at you before quickly nodding, holding her hands out to grab them. She gave you one as she slipped hers on her head and you followed after her, placing the necklace around your neck.
“We reserved a seat for two?” Ningning remarked towards the lady.
The girl nodded, “What’s the name?”
“Ning Yi Zhuo..” Nigning replied, nodding.
The girl nodded, “Okay, follow me.” She showed you both to the deck of the restaurant, seated outside right above the sand and beside the ocean. You were in awe at how beautiful the sunset was. Ningning thanked the girl as she placed down menus and told you both that your waiter would be over soon.
“It’s so pretty in Malibu…” You sighed, looking at the ocean.
“I grew up right next door to Malibu, actually. I always enjoyed coming here on vacation, such a nice place. Anyway,” She laughed, “What are you getting to drink? I brought my fake just in case…”
You smiled, shaking your head, “I don’t drink, Ningning. You’re always pressuring me to drink.”
She scoffed, “Peer pressure? I’d never!”
You rolled your eyes, “Sure. I’ll probably just get water, I’m trying to be healthier.”
“Aw, okay. I love that for you, but I’m still going to get a Pina Colada.” She sighed, pretending to jut her lip out at you.
You shook your head and looked down at your menu, suddenly feeling your heart dropping. The prices were high! The cheapest thing you saw was $20!
“Jesus, Ningning! These prices are literally so unrealistic.” You told her.
She shrugged, “You pay for the quality, not quantity. They honestly have some of the best food in Malibu, trust me. How about we both share an appetizer and then worry about the entrees later? Sounds good?”
“Okay, well, at least I'll pay for your gas. Deal?” You asked.
“Oh hell yeah, you can definitely pay for my gas.” She nodded to herself.
You closed your menu and took your phone out, capturing some photos of the ocean for later. You wanted to savor the moment. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the beach, the waves lapped gently against the shore. The sky was painted in shades of pink and orange, while the clouds seemed to catch fire with the last rays of daylight. A few seagulls flew overhead, their silhouettes dark against the vibrant sky. The air was filled with the salty scent of the sea and the distant sound of laughter and music. It was a moment of peace and beauty that seemed to suspend time, as if the world had paused to take in the breathtaking scene before it.
Only, your attention was stricken as you heard Ningning whisper something. You looked back at her and her eyes were wide and signaling to the side of you; A waiter. Your heart skipped a beat as he drew closer, his smile dazzling and his eyes sparkling. He was even more handsome up close, with strong, chiseled features and a confident demeanor. You felt a sudden burst of nervous energy, unsure of how to act in the presence of such beauty. His voice was smooth and charming as he greeted you both. You felt an immense struggle to keep your composure. It was clear that he had an effect on you, and you simply couldn't help but wonder if he felt the same way.
“Evening, ladies…” The young man greeted you both, “Can I get you guys started with anything to drink?”
Ningning eagerly nodded, “You most certainly can…Y/N?” Hearing your name snapped you out of your mini trance and you looked at her in confusion. She widened her eyes at you, signaling for you to talk.
“I’ll just get some water for now.” You told him, clearing your throat.
He nodded, “Water it is…” A small smile crept on his face as he glanced back up at you and playfully remarked, “But I’ve got a feeling you might want something a little stronger later on.”
You couldn't help but feel a bit flustered by his comment, but you managed to laugh it off. "We'll see about that," you replied, trying to hide your growing attraction to him. Ningning, on the other hand, was not as subtle.
"Oh, I think we definitely will," she said with a grin, winking at the waiter. You shot her a look, but she just shrugged innocently, “I’d like a Piña Colada, extra coconut.”
The waiter chuckled, clearly enjoying the attention. "I'll keep that in mind," he said before taking your orders and walking away. Ningning leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eye.
"He's cute, isn't he?" she whispered.
You rolled your eyes, but couldn't deny that she was right. "Yeah, he is," you admitted, feeling a flush rise to your cheeks.
“He was soooo flirting with you, Y/N.” She laughed, “It’s time you got some action, anyway. 19 and still a virgin? Unheard of.” You shook your head, trying to brush off her comment. But deep down, you couldn't help but wonder if there was some truth to it. You couldn't wait to see what the rest of the night had in store.
As the night progressed, you and Ningning chatted about a multitude of topics. Life, college, boys, parties, homework, etc. You were glad you went out with her, it was just the breath of fresh air you had been needing these past few weeks.
Oh, and of course, you’d stolen some glances at the waiter. When he brought back your drinks, he made sure to place yours down first even though Ningning was obviously positioned in front of your water.
One thing he did that made his interest almost completely obvious was when he leaned down on the table to speak to you when you knew he could hear you just fine as he was merely a few inches away. You wouldn’t say you were flirting back. Although Ningning was urging you to do so, flirting wasn’t something you were familiar with. Why would a guy flirt with you of all people? Especially as your much prettier friend sat across from you. For all you knew, he simply could have wanted a nice tip. You wouldn’t entertain him much, you came to get a break from campus, not to find a fling.
Ningning turned her attention back to you when he walked away to retrieve you both some refills, “He wants you.”
You didn’t respond to her comment, choosing to turn your attention to the last sushi roll instead. You rinsed it down with the last morsel of your water, sighing internally when he came back.
“One filet mignon for Ms. Lily,” He said, placing down your food, “And a scottish Salad for-”
“Lily?” Ningning laughed, confused at the name he referred to you as.
He looked up at her as he placed her food down, “Lily Flower, in your hair,” He glanced up at you, “It’s cute, by the way.”
You awkwardly nodded, “Thanks…”
He smiled and rubbed his hands together, “Well, I’ll be around. Call me if you guys need anything. I hope you enjoy your food.”
“Will do.” Ningning said, “One thing before you go…” He nodded in acknowledgment, licking his lips. “You single?”
The waiter chuckled, clearly amused by Ningning's boldness. "I am, actually," he replied, his eyes flickering over to you for a moment.
Ningning grinned. "Good to know," she said, winking at him. "We'll keep that in mind."
As he walked away, you couldn't help but feel a little jealous of your friend's flirtatiousness. But deep down, you knew that there was something between you and the waiter, something that went beyond just a passing attraction.
As you ate your meal, you found yourself stealing glances at him, meeting your eyes with his own whenever he walked by, feeling a rush of excitement every time he flashed you a smile. Finally, as the meal came to a close, he brought over the bill and once again flashed you a charming grin. "I hope you enjoyed everything," he said, his eyes sparkling. You couldn't help but smile back, feeling a little shy under his gaze.
"It was great, thank you," you replied, trying to sound casual, knowing damn well that you were nearly shitting your pants under his intense gaze.
He nodded, walking away to leave you both to the bill. Ningning shook her head, “If you don’t write your number down on this bill, I’m genuinely never taking you out ever again. This is a threat.”
You couldn't help but laugh at Ningning's threat, feeling a little embarrassed at how obvious your attraction to the waiter had been. But she was right, you knew that you couldn't let this opportunity slip away. As you saw the waiter returning to take the bill, you nervously scribbled down your phone number onto a small napkin, placing it beside the bill. You hoped that he wouldn't notice until you left as you didn’t want to make anything awkward. As he collected the bill, you tried to act casual, but your heart was racing with anticipation. You watched as he glanced down at the paper with your phone number on it, and you couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking. Was he interested in you too? Or was this just wishful thinking on your part?
“Thank you ladies, have a nice night.” He said as you both got up. Ningning nudged you to say something but you urged her out of the restaurant, wanting to abort immediately. However, just before you walked out of the door, you looked back at him once more. You saw that he tucked the paper into his pocket without a word, but then he glanced back at you with a small smile, and you felt a surge of hope. Maybe there was something there after all.

You two made your way into town with the windows down, allowing the breeze to brush through as you listened to the radio. You pointed out a nearby hotel that looked nice, actually. Pool, multiple floors, adequate priced rooms. It wouldn’t hurt to stay for one night in a nice hotel, afterall, you only live once.
Ningning found a parking spot and you helped her carry her bag in as she made her way to the front to pay for the room. She made small talk in the elevator but you truthfully found yourself checking your phone to see if he had texted. It was already late, nearing 1 am. Surely the restaurant wasn’t open this late. Maybe he only smiled at you out of courtesy, afterall, Ningning had left a nice tip.
As you entered the hotel room, you couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that you hadn't heard from the waiter. Maybe it was a mistake to put yourself out there like that, to give him your number so readily. Maybe he wasn't interested after all.
Ningning caught the look on your face and immediately knew what was going on. "Hey, don't worry about it," she said, giving you a comforting pat on the back. "Maybe he's just busy or something. You'll hear from him soon enough."
You nodded, trying to shake off your disappointment. "Yeah, you're right," you said, forcing a smile. "Let's just enjoy the night." Ningning nodded in agreement, and the two of you settled in for the night, enjoying the comfortable beds and the peace and quiet of the hotel room.
But as you lay in bed, your mind kept wandering back to the waiter. Amidst all of the doubt you held within your mind, you couldn't help but wonder what he was doing, where he was, and if he was thinking about you too. Maybe it was just wishful thinking, but you couldn't help but feel like there was something there, something that was worth pursuing.
As you placed your phone down on the nightstand beside you, it vibrated. Your heart dropped, surely…a family member wasn’t texting you at 3 in the morning, right? You took a deep breath, glancing to your side to see Ningning asleep. You reached for your phone, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as you saw the notification; An unsaved number. Your heart leapt in your chest as you opened the message, feeling a rush of relief and joy when you saw the text.
