Finally got around to listening to Hurley, and uhm... I have some thoughts on it. Under the read more are the reviews I wrote as I was going through the album a
Memories - 5/10 - It has major "Movie credits song" vibes… Why is it the opener? It would be much more impactful if this were the closer, or penultimate song. It's a song about wanting to go back, don't make it the first song in the gosh dang album! Other than that, it's a fine enough song, if a bit forgettable.
Ruling Me - 4.5/10 - This feels… Sorta sanitized, in a weird way. Maybe I shouldn't've listened to this album right after I relistened to Pinkerton, but man. This feels like it was made to play in the background of something else, Is this gonna be the whole album's vibes? (UPDATE: Yeah, it was.)
Trainwrecks - 3.5/10 - This song is the musical equivalent to edging. It feels it's leading up to major drop or solo that never really comes? Sure, there's a sorta drop at the end, but it doesn't feel impactful, like, at all. This song pisses me off.
Unspoken - 7.5/10 - This song feels… Familiar? But not in the way that the other songs do -- I dig it, honestly! I find myself actually bobbing up and down to it, and I really like that drop around the end!! Maybe this album won't be so bad after all!
Where's My Sex - 6.5/10 - This is very silly. Rivers sounds kinda funky in this song, but… Honestly? It ain't too bad, he kinda sounds like JT Music in the prechorus in a weird way and I think it's kinda funny. This dumb joke song is actually better than most of the other songs on this god forsaken album. The bridge is a little weird.
Run Away - 5/10 - "Oh man, this intro is really interesting! I can't wait to see what it leads to!" "…" "]:" The song should've been more chill, I think. other than that, it's fine? This could've been the song that just fucking destroys you out of nowhere of this album but instead its just… Another song, really.
Hang On - 4.5/10 - This entire album with the exception of Unspoken has felt like a collection of songs taken from a movie that doesn't exist's soundtrack, and not in a good way.
Smart Girls - 4.5/10 - Too many songs in this album feel sorta samey, very generic, and I think that's why a lot of them sorta sound familiar in a weird way? This… doesn't feel like Weezer. What is this?
Brave New World - 4.5/10 - See the above reviews. This whole thing so far as just made me wanna listen to a better weezer album.
Time Flies - -1/10 - I can't finish this song. I literally can't finish this song, I had to stop in the middle of it, it's just too much -- Rivers' vocals are weirdly crackly? It's either his vocals or the guitar, It's hard to hear everything against the fucking drums that are blasting in my ears over and over again, it's so fucking overstimulating that I just can't bring myself to finish it -- this album is this first album I've ever heard that has actually fucking hurt me due to how poorly made it is. This is what you put as the closer? What the fuck?
Overall - 4.5/10 - the album isn't bad, it's just… Mediocre. Most songs are forgettable, there's only two I actually liked, and the closer was so fucking awful that I physically couldn't finish it. What the hell happened to this band?
