Santa Monica Gables Beach Club

The “Gables Beach Club” was the first beach club built in Santa Monica. Constructed in 1926, it was located below the bluffs of Pacific Palisades near Montana Avenue, two blocks north of the California Incline. In 1926, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), was called “Roosevelt Highway” or “State Route One”. The California Incline (built in 1896) was originally known as the “Sunset Trail”.

The colorized postcard (above), illustrates how the owners and investors envisioned the final 23-stories tall Gables Beach Club. The original one-story “Gables” can be seen in the foreground with its green roof. It was built directly on the sand on the ocean side of PCH, while the much taller, secondary building literally towers behind it directly across the street. This, unfortunately (or fortunately) final version never materialized. If it had, it would have blocked the view of the ocean looking down from atop the bluffs. Due to the onset of the Great Depression, only 3 stories were ever completed.

"A HOLE IN THE WALL" of the steep sides of the Santa Monica Palisades will be uniquely transformed into a useful condition, when it is completely filled by the lofty 23-story building of the Gables Beach Club, now in course of construction. In the hole proper, rising from the ocean level 100 feet to the top of the Palisades and then 150 more feet into the higher altitude, a marvelous piece of engineering will make it possible to use the only bit of ground that was thought to be unusable in the two-mile-long Santa Monica ocean front park.

The rooms will all command a wonderful vista over ocean, mountain, and valley. A 250-car garage will occupy the entire first and second floors. Also a large, glass-enclosed, saltwater swimming pool; together with 1,200 dressing rooms, each with its own, individual shower are being built into the hole. Above will be two immense ballrooms and twelve private dining rooms. While on the eleventh floor, outdoor terraces for dining will secure the proper illusion of European resort hotels. When the Club is completed the Montana Hole will be no more.

Santa Monica, Cal., May 9. While Jack Dempsey planned to return to his training camp at Wheeler Hot Springs. Monday, sport writers were enthusiastic about the apparent good condition of the former heavyweight champion. In his first public ring appearance since he lost the title to Gene Tunney in Philadelphia, Dempsey went three rounds with Tony Fuente here Sunday night to aid the Gables Beach club benefit for the Mississippi river relief fund. Dempsey appeared to be timing his punches well and his condition generally was better than when he lost to Tunney, sport critics at the ringside agreed. By United Press.

In 1930, a fire partially destroyed the Club. Then in 1932, it was rebuilt and reopened as the Sorrento Beach Club.

The Sorrento Beach Club was demolished in the 1960s. In the above photo, a section of the back wall (butting up against the Pacific Palisades bluffs) can been seen. This is the only remaining section still standing. It was left to act as a retaining wall against erosion.

In the 1960s the Sorrento appeared in the background of numerous beach volleyball photos such as those featured in the book, “Hometown Santa Monica: The Bay Cities Book”, by author, by Nancy Gottesman, including some of actor Peter Lawford and President John F. Kennedy.

Here’s a current view of the partial cement “ruins” located at 810 Palisades Beach Rd. on Pacific Coast Highway  between the California Incline and circular pedestrian bridge leading to Parking Lot 8.
