I've been really into Team Fortress Two lately, and seeing as I cannot get the Actual Fic Writing to go, I wanted to do a little character analysis thing as a silly, so here's my favorite tf2 pairings and how i think they'd act:
Soldier x Spy / Freedom Fries
This ship is utter chaos and honestly I love it. There's a lot of light, passive-aggressive bullying (from Spy) and a lot more heavy, just plain aggressive bullying (from Soldier) and they may seem like they want to kill each other at points. However, neither one of the two will hesistate to mow down anyone who threatens the other.
Spy is stuffy with how he shows affection, especially when there's witnesses. Maybe he moves past him a little too closely and brushes his hand on Soldier's arm as he does. Maybe he hides a small smile as he rolls his eyes at what idiotic thing his partner says. Maybe he doesn't immediately call Soldier stupid to his face when he really really wants to, because he's trying so hard. These quiet attempts at passive affection are ruined by Soldier being the antithesis of subtle, in every way imaginable.
Going off of how Soldier is with Zhanna in the comics, I wouldn't say Soldier is the most verbally affectionate person, but his constant antics and comments and death-defying combat skills would certainly help to pry Spy out of his shell just a little bit. I also think that Spy would teach him how to do a few openings on his butterfly knife. Soldier would get the quickdraw down, and possibly the basic opening. Jury's out on anything more complex than that.
Engineer x Medic / Science Party
Evil mad scientist x Morally questionable tech genius. There is no universe where this ship is bad. Well... it can end badly for other people if their forces combine, but that's how it is.
Long, coffee-filled nights in the lab, each one taking turns to listen to their partner's incomprehensible speeches full of science jargon. They nod, half understanding as the other points to different blueprints or medical diagrams, explaining concepts far beyond their own paygrade, and only mostly hold themselves back from interjecting about their own project that would go wonderfully with this one.
The night Engineer finally starts crashing from exhaustion he goes down to where Medic is in the lab and asks when he's coming to bed. Medic, being Medic, says some shit like "Oh no I don't sleep, I removed that part of my hypothalimus years ago."
Engineer says "Alright darlin', see you tomorrow," before kissing him on the head, going to bed, and not worrying about what a hypothalimus is nor how Medic is even still alive at this point.
Does Engineer somehow dodge Medic's request to be some sor tof test subject? Maybe, but there's the even higher possibility that Medic was requested to assist with Engineer's mechanical hand.
Heavy x Medic / Red Oktoberfest
What is there to say that hasn't been said already, by authors far better than i?
Evil mad scientist x All-too-willing test subject that could also crush this scientist like a bug if he chose (but he doesn't. He doesn't, because he loves this doctor). No notes, 10/10, moving on.
Sniper x Spy / Bloody Suit
Also called Spyper, which is the best ship name ever made imo.
Same Spy characterization as before, but instead of the extreme of Soldier it's the general curmudgeony attitude of Sniper. There's also a lot of bullying in this one, probably more than there is with Freedom Fries because Sniper is also not passive aggresive, he just likes to pick on Spy to get a rise out of him, and Spy likes to pick on Sniper to get a rise out of him, and so on and so forth until something is broken and they're either aggresively arguing or aggresively making out. Who's to say.
There's so many possible ships and honestly? I haven't seen a single one I could automatically dismiss (other than Scout/Spy, but Scout & Spy as a familial relationship is good). I wanna do more of these as I find more ships I like, obviously I didn't even mention anything with Demo, Pyro, or Scout, and I barely mentioned Heavy, but what can I say I'm biased <3

Next batch of Adult Swim shows from 2007-11 (notable their live action stuff increased around this time) with favorite character from: Xavier: Renegade Angel, Delocated, The Rising Son, Titan Maximum, Mary Shelley's Frankenhole, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule, Childrens Hospital, God, the Devil and Bob, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, and Mongo Wrestling Alliance? Off the Air being skipped for lacking a recurring character.
Never seen The Rising Son, your pretty face is going to hell or any of the off the air stuff. Yup this was the live action era alright.
Xavier: Renegade Angel: I didn't get this one when it was out but should revisit it. I hear it's good. Delocated: I'll note a faviorit eif I have one as for a lot of these I really don't or don't remember it well enough to have one. That said Delcoated is .. eh. I like the basic concept, jon himself is hilarous, but it soon devolves into one man being a giant jackass for far too many seasons. I watched way more of it than I care to Titan Maximum: I loved this one at the time but nowadays it's.. eh. Not bad, beautifully animated and it still deserved better.. but the comedy dosen't hit as well as it used to though the concept, a reckless idiot has to get his team back together to fight an old teamate they abused is great.
Mary Shelly's Frankenhole: Another one to revisit and one I genuinely like a lot. It was Dino Stamatopous' follow up to Morel orel and sadly one of his last cartoons, the last being high school us which

But Frankenhole is one I wouldn't mind revisiting and has a simple premise: Celebrties visit dr frankenstine for help. Frank here is a cynical pompous asshat and the style here is a beautiful sor tof pupetry that looks like papercraft. The show is criminally underated and I'm ashsamed I haven't thought of it in so long.
Check It Out! With Dr Steve Brule: This one was okay, haven't watched much of it. But John C Reily is as great in the role as ever and it was a briliant idea fo ra spinoff, I just never vibed with it like I did with tim and eric. This is also as you can probably guess around the time I sorta checked out of adult swim. Still a few shows I watched on and off and obviously I returned for ventures bros and I watch it more NOW, via hbo max, but most of these shows really didn't do it for me and I mostly watchede because it was on the same block as other things I watched.
Children's Hospital: Okay while this era is a bit eh for me, this show is solid. It never fully did it for me but I respect it's stacked cast, goofy parody and accuracey to how these types of shows, paticuarlly greys anatomy which I have watched every episode of.
Mongo Wrestling Alliance; I didn't think much of this one but being way more into wrestling these days, i'd gladly revisit it. I"ve also grown to appreciate metalocalypse more so being from one of the same creators, that'd probably also help.
God the Devil and Bob: I need ot rewatch more of this one. As a kid I saw bits and piece sof i'ts an original run but the concept is great, and I like kit's characterizations: the devil as genuinely good at his job but badly wanting his absientee father figure to notice him and god being laid back, a mild prick, but ultimately well meaning.

When You Walked By
“Please, Rebecka, set them up,” her mother said as she gestured to the crates and the wheelbarrow and the antique metal milk jugs.
Rebecka looked up from her book, her long hair still a veil all around her face. This was supposed to be her holiday, her break from college before going back to finish. But instead of being able to sit and read and drink tea and take walks and swim at twilight, Rebecka was stuck in the small flower shop on the high street of the small country town where her parents had moved to get away from the city. Her mother had some health problems, and the doctors told her it would be good to get out of the city, and out of the legal business. The stress was not helping her health.
So the family had moved, all but Rebecka who was almost finished with University, and her mother had opened up a flower shop in this small out of the way town.
Unfortunately, her mother was trying to run the small shop like she had run the law office, her overseeing every detail... which sor tof defeated the purpose of getting out of the law business. And so Rebecka had offered to come and help out. But working with her mother had it’s challenges.
“Rebecka, move those plants. Rebecka, arrange these flowers better. Rebecka, why are you always reading, there are things to be cleaned and sorted and orders to be filled.”
Honestly, Rebecka was trying, but she just felt trapped, and all she wanted to do was rest and read and have a little fun maybe...but her mother needed the help.
“Okay, okay,” Rebecka said as she put her book down and took the instruction sheet from her mother. She had to follow the detailed instructions on how this was to be set up, her mother reminded her.
She tried not to sigh as she took trip after trip bringing the crates and flowers and jugs and wheelbarrow out to the front of the shop. It was only when it was all out there that she realized she could have loaded everything in the wheelbarrow and only had to make one trip... but Rebecka wasn’t used to thinking like that.
With a deep long sigh, she pushed her golden hair out of her face and looked at all the things she needed to arrange.
She was trying to read the instructions and balance two vases filled with flowers, and move one of the crates with her foot...when it all started to go wrong.
Her hair was in her face as one of the vases began to tip and she tried to catch it, and then the crate fell over, knocking over the plants that were on the ground. And she didn’t have enough hands.
She may have made a small scream as the vase slipped from her fingers.

6, 13, 17, 36, 42, 50!! (Excuse the long list :P)
6: Which book was the last one you really, really loved?
i think it was the gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue? honestly i forget the books i’ve read and when ive read them really easily.
if we’re getting picky and only counting the sort of books than you wouldn’t mind reading instead of being alive (not in a suicidal idealization kind of way. just being so absorbed in a story that it might as well swallow you whole. the kind of book that, if you read it, you spend most of the day almost in a haze, going through the motions with your thoughts about the book as constant background noise you slip into when you can
so. that doesn’t sound entirely healthy. i promise i didn’t mean to make it sound like that), probably all for the game? i think it was after those that i started pretty mediocre books and just didn’t read for a while, but again, time… is hard
13: Name a book with a really bad movie/tv adaption
naming another one, just because i can! and because i’m still pissed at the precy jackson adaptation, so yeah. the lightning thief, don’t think i have to explain this one
17: If you owned a bookshop what would you call it?
i don’t even know. i do know that it would be an either terrible or surprisingly clever pun that @aoi-herondale came up with and had me at least three minutes laughing. we’ve joked about a library before and we agree that it would have a cafe/some sor tof cofee shop area or whatever the word is (no, im not copying your answer) so, some sor of cofee/hot chocolate pun i imagine.
sorry this one’s not really an answer
36: Name a book you consider to be terribly overrated
i already answered this one, but i just remembered la celestina is considered a spanish classic. so fuck la celestina and fuck every character in that book, except melibea probably, because she was under a spell or some shit.
(i know i feel very strongly about old books no one cares about anymore, but thats life)
42: Which was the best book you had to read in school?
the first i can think of is En el Corazón del Bosque, one of those books with activities that you had to read en cuartoi de primaria o por ahi, which is the first instance of a school book being genuinely good. some actual bests are The Picture of Dorian Gray and La Vida es Sueño (look, more old books instead of sticking to my century), both of which i technically chose to read, and i’d read both before i had to for school, but they still count
50: Why do you love to read?
i’m sorry, this one’s definetly getting a long answer and the post is alreaady long enough as is
okay, so. when asked out of the blue why i read, my instinctive answer is because i love stories. and i do, i love stories, and i love the characters that inhabit them and care about them dearly. but there’s always something else in that question isn’t there. always an implied instead. why do you read so much, istead of watching a movie, or tv. why do you spend your free time consuming a medium that is at least partially responsible for ruining your eyesight instead of going out and playing football when you get home - why did you ruin your eyes reading under the covers instead of going to sleep - why are you making an effort - it’s an effort, for many people - instead of doing things i enjoy more.
and i don’t mean to dismiss the importance of sports, or how fun they can be. and i hate to see audiovisual media put down to praise the wonders of reading. i have watched movies that feel like the’re going to change your life, movies that take your breath away with their cinematography, or with soundtracks so iconic they keep being referenced and played in arrangements years and years after, or soundtracks that simply have really good music. i have watched shows that made me care about the characters more thamn most book protagonists i can name, more than some of my extended family.
this was just a very roundabout way of saying, because it’s important to me that it is understood, that there’s nothing inherently supperior or holier in books. and yet. and yet i consider them one of the key factors of my life, of shaping me as a person.
part of it is, obviously and giving due credit to my mother, that i’ve been listening to stories for longer than my memory stretches, and that my memory does stretch to stories i heard before i could talk with more than one consonant in a way it doesn’t for most things.
part of it is that a book can be carried around everywhere, while a movie can only be downloaded - since pretty recently - and you can’t really start watching rear window in the middle of class. for a person who both doesn’t like and doesn’t know how to properly socialize, you can understand the benefit
the last reason, the one i’ve been building up to, and a consequence of the other two is that… i’m just shaped for them, if that makes sense. movies, shows, podcasts, comics, whatever, do make me feel really strongly, but afterwards it’s just… over. maybe i’m still scared, because i get scared easily, but none of those have made me cry endless minutes after i finish them, or grin stupidly in the middle of class because i remembered a line i particularly liked. i mentioned aftg earlier. well there’s something incredibly fucked up that happens in the second book, if i remember correctly. this event is - thankfully - never described in excruciating detail, and it would’ve been a thousand times more shocking if it were a movie. but, the book centers on the person that went through that, and the reaction of the protagonist, the emotions he feels, and how other people react to feeling similarly. i’m not exagerating when i say i was so horrified after reading it that i didn’t feel capable of talking - not even to someone, just the thought of making sounds was too much - for hours, and i didn’t feel okay until after more than a day.
maybe i’m just very empathetic, but that’s it. the action is important but what i truly seek out is the description of emotion, be it a straightforward description of anger or devotion full of imagery and metaphors.
i read because i’m greedy and want the character’s feelings in addition to my own
#black-tea-blue-pens#'excuse the long list' you should be apologizing to yourself#look what a mess you've gotten into#ask#at

I think the best defense is that—okay, based on my experiences of the way "Animal Farm" is taught in middle schools, I take it that there are a lot of people who make it pretty far in life without the basic cognitive skill of interpreting a story in any even slightly non-literal way. Or reading beyond the surface at all. And idk it probably isn't the most important thing in the world but I feel the same way about someone who can't do that as someone who can't e.g. multiply one-digit numbers. Like realistically they will probably be fine but it seems like they have been failed somehow Or like. Society is not built for someone who is that helpless cognitively
hmm. i like this framing because i feel the specifically-identified-purposes are often kind of stupid but its possible there is a holistic and hard to point at purpose. now whether lit classes are like "good" at this task is another thing but like. idk i guess i feel like you NEED this sor tof vague holistic goal to justify lit classes? because any specific goal could be more tightly targeted than just like. read these books and write essays about them
Every defense of mandatory English classes (it should totally be offered! I really liked and miss English class! But its crazy it's mandatory!) is so transparently ad hoc. Like. Yes. Obviously you can come up with positive effects. You could come up with positive effects of occupying literally hundreds of hours of every child's time. If you compel people to do something, you need a better reason than "it will have some positive effect on them". Like, at the very least you need "it will have more positive than negative effect on them"

A goofy scenario where moronic Keroro genuinely forgets for a moment that Kururu isn't as old as he is and then is startled to find out just how much younger than him he is cause he never actually knew how old Kururu is. whitecanarrow replied to your post “whitecanarrow replied to your post “hi, just wondering, if you’re…”
exactly! i personally love hearing the actors’ thoughts on the characters. it’s the fandom then deciding that the actor opinions are the *only* acceptable ones that gets me. case in point: i LOVE most of SA’s opinions on Oliver, but I’ll forever disagree with his opinion that Oliver wasn’t in love with Sara. And all that works just fine for me until the annoyance of anti-canarrow fans popping into my inbox lmao
i’ve never really been one to need my ship to be canon to ship it. like, i’ve literally shipped characters that never met. characters that were both dead, characters where one was dead and the other married to someone else.
it doesn’t matter. canon is not a trump card. canon just sor tof .. is. that’s it. like, you get to have the extra pleasure of not just imagining your otp smooshing faces and bumping uglies, but actually see it. that’s it, that’s the only advantage. (and honestly, if the writing is on CW, not even that is worth it. like, the best otps are the one the writers never touch for too long). shipping is not decided by canon or an actor’s opinion on canon, because literally nobody cares lmao
the whole idea of true love that needs to needs to happen only once is not for me. or that the halves of the otp are ‘sullied’ by fucking or loving other people. and neither is the one where that they need to stay ‘pure’ for each other, whether physically or emotionally… OR that dismissing other love interests as ‘flings’ or ‘not meaning anything’ somehow makes the love between the otp now ‘better’ ‘of a higher quality’.
these might be tropes that work for some. not for all. and not for me. obviously, not for you either.
my problems start when to ‘heighten’ the ‘love’ the otp is, you have to shit on the other women or men they were before. the relationships they have before. it’s just a lazy way - in writing a story i mean - of glorifying the relationship they are in rn. (usually, it always ends with two women begin compared and the one liked b y the author being found more worthy of the hero’s love, which is an instant nope for me)

Robin Chronicles - Part 1
Robin Dixie stood nervously in the parlor of her Allentown home. She'd soothed her dress nervously at least five times now, causing her sister to roll her eyes and tell her to stop being ridiculous. Gatherings of their social group weren't uncommon at their home, but this was different. Her father was looking to invest in a Pennsylvania company and he'd invited the owner of said company over since they were already in town talking business.
Her sister had said that it should have been the other way around, that they should have been in Scranton being the ones put up since the amount of money that was being offered to this company was in the seven digit range but father had insisted that he would not travel and that showing graciousness to potential business partner was the way to do things.
Robin agreed that her father certainly knew what he was doing as he had sold the family's media company ten years prior at a cost of $300 million, plus a share of stocks that had values she wasn't even sure of. Father was intelligent and he knew how to do business, so if he wanted the Aldridge Company CEO to come here he had a reason.
That meant though she and her sister had to be the perfect examples of children, as they'd been told time and time again today. She'd been sent to change twice and to redo her makeup once before she'd passed inspection from her mother and was told to be quiet and look pretty. It'd been her lot for most of her life and she thought she did okay with it.
The moment arrived when William Aldridge arrived, but the surprise was that he'd brought his son. After he'd greeted her parents he introduced the young man as his eventual successor, William Jr.
William Aldridge Jr was handsome, there was no denying it and she felt her heart stutter as he gave her a crooked grin. "Thank you for having us, Mr. Dixie," he greeted in that perfectly polite way. "And Mrs. Dixie, you have such a lovely home. It's a true testament to your taste." He exuded charm, in the way that Robin felt was probably making her mother melt some, though she didn't show it much.
Then he turned and looked at her and Hazel. "I had heard you had daughters, but I did not expect them to be so beautiful." Robin's face flushed a light pink and she looked down slightly. Though she did look up and shyly meet his eyes, finding that he was looking at her specifically still and with a twinkle in his eye at that.
"You flatter us," Hazel said a touch of flatness entering her voice to show that she was not impressed.
"Thank you for your kind words," Robin added, much more sincere in her words.
The attention was quickly taken off of them however and her parents took both of the Williams around to meet other people. Robin took in a shaky breath as she watched the younger William go, wondering if it was normal for butterflies to riot in her stomach as they were. He was just so handsome and his voice was so nice and his eyes... they were so beautiful.
"Ugh, what a fake," Hazel scoffed. "Nothing could have been more phony about that guy if he'd tried. And wha tare you doing blushing like that? Robin, don't go falling head over heels for that creep. He is just after father's money."
"I know," she answered, sighing quietly and pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. She couldn't help but look over at him still, her glaze lingering on the future business executive. He was exactly the sort of man that her parents said she should marry, but Hazel was probably right. She was only seventeen and father wouldn't hear of anyone asking to get engaged to her yet. Nor, did she think that William Jr would be so inclined.
Hazel dragged her off to go and socialize with others but try as she might to be involved with the people around her she couldn't help but let her gaze follow William Jr around the room. Often she caught him looking her way too and every time their eyes met she felt a shiver go up her spine, a sor tof wonder at the fact that he seemed drawn to her as well.
She was afraid nothing would come of it tough until she went off to the bathroom and when she came out she saw him in the hallway. Shyly she smiled at him as she walked closer to him. "Hi," she said, wondering why she had nothing more clever to say. Hazel would have something clever to say.
"I was hoping that I'd catch you alone," he said, his voice quiet as he looked at her.
"You were?" she asked, a tad surprised as she looked up at him. "Why?"
He reached up to push a strand of hair behind her ear. "I wanted to spend some time alone with you," he answered. "Everyone I've met so far is nice, but no one is really calling out to me like you are. Do you know somewhere we could maybe get to know each other alone?"
Her heart raced at the implication that he wanted to be alone with her. This handsome, accomplished, charming man. She gave a nod. "Yeah, come with me this way," she said and lead him up the back stairs up to her room, which would of course be empty.
Once they entered it he looked around before turning back to her. "You know, I wasn't just saying that earlier," he said, walking closer to her and wrapping his arms around her.
"Saying what?" she was confused what he meant but it was hard to think straight anyway with her stomach flying like it was.
"About how beautiful you are," he answered, his hand moving to cup her cheek. "You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen."
"Thank you, but I'm sure you've come across more beautiful girls before," she answered, a blush reddening her cheeks as she looked up into his eyes, feeling lost in them and a wonder that he'd say such things to her anyway.
"Robin, do you think I would lie to you?" he asked, suddenly much more serious.
"What? No, no," she shook her head. "I just.. I am surprised. Someone as handsome as you must come into contact with many beautiful girls."
He softened slightly and leaned a bit closer to her, his lips practically brushing against hers. "And yet, none that I have wanted so intensely as I want you," he leaned forward and pressed his lips against her own in a passionate kiss and she was lost.
