Howl's Moving Castle Quick Thoughts

Howl’s Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies to ever exist, and I was finally able to get around to reading the book. Going into it, I knew that the story of the movie and book were vastly different, and I kept this in mind as I tried not to compare them too much. I wanted to simply enjoy each story for what it was. 

While I still love the movie more (I’m a sucker for romance what can I say), there was one question that I had: why wasn’t Sophie a witch in the movie? 

I love the idea that, while the witch cursed her initially, Sophie was the one to continue the curse upon herself. She had these self-deprecating, “I’m better off as an old lady” thoughts that really made me think about how our thoughts are often what get in the way of our own happiness. We tell ourselves we can’t do something, so when it comes time to do it, we lack the confidence in ourselves that we need to succeed. I know this is often the case for me, whether it comes to school work or my own personal writing: I sometimes talk down about myself and my abilities, which leads me to dread working on what I’ve told myself will be too difficult for me to complete. I thought Sophe was a really powerful representation of how our thoughts affect us, and I would have liked to see it more in the movie. 

(I need to rewatch it but I think her de-aging comes more from her opening up her heart to love which I still really adore that idea too, but can’t I have my cake and eat it too? I just think it would have been nice to see on the big screen the thoughts Sophie has about herself and how they affect her and how she grows past them through self-love and opening up to love Howl.)

So one thing I hate in movies and shows is when they don’t bother conveying the passage of time in a creative way and just go for a card that reads like ‘1 year later’ or whatever. Now that I have acknowledged my hypocrisy, which everyone knows once you do no one can criticize you for it, it’s one semester later! I straight up took one semester off from taking pics to make sure these flops don’t get kicked out of college, that’s how shit everyone’s grades, skills, and aspiration meters were and how close we were to financial collapse thanks to the lack of scholarship money + Lakshmi’s 5k dates. If I ever have the brilliant idea to bring this many sims to college again please remind me of this post.

The only sim unaffected by our gap semester was brainchad June who already had good grades and I wish I could ignore all rules and just crown her as the heir. Alas, I’m cursed with Sugar and Sophito. Two notable things happened during this time: June and I took advantage of the extra time I had to focus on her to finally win over Erik Swain’s flaky little heart, and Stacy moved in, you can see her hot new pop-star look in the background with Julian.

Now, for the moment of truth.. did my hard work bear fruit??

YES IT DID. I even managed to get Sugar an A+, which is probably my hardest ts2 achievement ever. With our financial and academic worries behind us, it’s time to get back to the normal rhythm of things:

This deer can mean 2 things, it can either be a representation of something dead being sewn up and puppetered (possibly one of the characters?), or its just decoration, maybe for an office?

But what can this mean? well its something you say at the altar when your getting married so this is most likely a nod towards jack and rosie’s marriage.

Sophie’s is by far the most interesting, as it has the same picture of the walten family, along with a new text reading “I know what I'm getting myself into. You don't, do not try your luck." and at the end was “He loved us” which has stayed the same for a good while.

BUT IT DOESNT END THERE! I found another intriguing clue, when highlighted, the 1st text part had “Do” at the begining of it, which points towards jack possibly reaching out to soph to try to get her to not do it.

Now this is where it gets more interesting. Theres a secret little song you can play at the top left hand corner, I’ve tracked it down and its “The Battle Hymn Of The Republic” by chill willy. Now, I thought those tiny tiny little voices in the back of the song were real, but they were actually apart of the song, which i was disappointed about.

Now, loosely stitching all this together, It seems that theres some sort of narrative going on where jack is slowly regaining conciousness inside of bon. But honestly Its been so long I can barely figure out whats happening

What do you think of Moon Knight so far? I haven't seen it yet, but I got some weird stigmatizing DID vibes from the trailer

Warning: There's going to be some spoilers here.

Sophie: We're not a DID system, so take this with a grain of salt. But the reactions from DID systems that I have seen have been overwhelmingly positive. I don't think it's stigmatizing anything, but I can't say that if it's completely accurate either.

Host: On quality alone, I thought it was a really strong first episode, and I liked how they interwove the Egyptian mythology into the series. (Moon Knight's Mummy-style costume is badass, even if we didn't get to see much of it.)

Sophie: Moon Knight's voices aren't just DID. He's also an avatar for an Egyptian god Khonshu, (which I guess makes them technically mixed origins) but the villain also appears to be an avatar for another goddess, and it's implied that he hears her voice but doesn't experience DID. I think that's important, as it reinforces that Moon Knight's disorder is likely from pre-existing and coming from trauma, rather than being a result of his interaction with Khonshu.

Host: My biggest problem with the marketing was seeing article after article on Reddit about people involved with the show talking about how "crazy" or "bonkers" it was. I was just thinking "why the fuck are you using that type of language to describe a show about someone with a literal mental disorder?" But the actual show handled everything much more respectfully.

I was also worried about the mirror scene in the previews because I thought it was going to be used in place of mindvoice. It's possible to talk to headmates by visualizing them in mirrors. We've done it. But it's more mentally taxing than just talking to each other in the mind. So I was glad to see that the mindvoice was the primary means of communication and that the mirror thing didn't happen until after the mind voice didn't work and Steven needed to see something to snap him out of denial. It's showy, but deliberately so, as if the writers knew this wouldn't be used as a first resort if Steven had actually listened

(Semi-related: Soph's favorite method of getting my attention and talking to me when we're alone now is just straight-up possessing the mouth and speaking to me through it. It's simultaneously unnerving and sweet to randomly feel the mouth start whispering an "I love you" and feel almost completely incapable of doing anything about it. I'm proud of how strong Soph has gotten, but I'm wondering if there's a point where I'll get used to the lack of control that comes with that. I'm not scared, because I do love her and I trust her completely. The lack of control is just hard to adjust to.)

Sophie: Speaking of which, there was also a really fun partial possession scene!

There were a few minor things that made me wonder if people actually experienced what was being portrayed in the show in that specific way, but most of it seems consistent with what I've heard from DID systems and given how different plurality is for everyone, and I'm not going to talk about things I thought might not be accurate, because there could definitely be systems that experienced that or experienced something similar.

At the end of the day, it's a genre about people dressing up in costumes and beating other people up. You're never going to get perfect representation for neurodivergent people in this type of story. But I think it does a pretty good job. I think the fact that they consulted psychiatrists who work with DID systems really shows.

I just wanted to pop in to say that I finished reading kyd today, even though I have been keeping up with it almost since you first started posting chapters. I feel like your writing is the type that shouldn't be binged but digested. I wanted to take my time, let myself marinate in it, you know? Bottom line is you make art dude. I can feel how much you love these characters and these concepts and this craft with every word you write, and it's wonderful.

You mentioned in a recent post that you want to focus on a project that isn't fanfic-related, and I truly wish you the best of luck with it.

(Ps: the formatting in kyd is brilliant, I love that you got funky with it in a way that you can only do so in fanfics and not traditional publishing.)

Wedding Day Worries

Summary: Early mornings aren’t Zelda’s thing, but that won’t stop her from having the best wedding day ever.

Getting up early wasn’t as cool as Zelda remembered it being as a kid. Instead, she just wanted to fall back asleep. Maybe staying up until midnight hadn’t been a good idea when they had an early morning. She squinted at the clock. 6:00. She sighed. She could stay in bed for a few minutes. . .right?

Nearly the moment she shut her eyes, someone was knocking on her door. And then her phone was ringing. Zelda lazily pressed the “accept call” button.

“Zee! Are you up? Let me in!” Victoria exclaimed.

Zelda sighed. “Hang on.” Then she hung up. She forgot that her sisters and best friend had been in a different timezone until last week. She answered the door a moment later with a tired, “do we have to start getting ready now?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. We have to be ready in four hours! Indigo is getting Soph and Jay up. They’ll be here soon.” Victoria shoved Zelda back into her room and shut the door behind them.

Three hours later, Zelda found herself holed up in the bathroom as her bridesmaids helped each other get ready.

“Jimin woke me up at seven this morning!” Tae exclaimed quietly over the phone. “Can you believe it?”

Zelda snickered. “Tori woke me up at six.”

“. . .I guess I can’t complain then.”

“Zee! Can you hurry up? We need to leave soon and I need to fix my makeup!” Jade exclaimed.

“Gotta go. Love you,” Zelda whispered into her phone before hanging it up.

The rest of the morning went by in a blur, as well as part of the afternoon. Tae had been in tears as they’d spoken their vows, and Zelda had been grinning. They’d shared a few sweet kisses before heading off to get ready for the reception. Both of them had opted out of shoes so it would be easier to dance.

Before dinner started, Indigo took her chance to make her maid-of-honor speech.

“You know, I knew from the moment you two saw each other that you were meant to be. My sister always said there’s a thin line between love and hate, and the two of you were definitely close to being a good representation of that.”

Zelda threw a napkin at her. “We didn’t dislike each other that much!”

Indigo grinned mischievously before continuing her speech.

Five hours later, the reception came to and end. Jasmine and Jin had disappeared before eight - no one blamed them; they had a one-month old - and Esme had gone with them because she was exhausted. Jimin and Hobi were both entirely tipsy if not borderline drunk at the end of the night, and Yoongi had been ready to leave as soon as the clock had hit nine. Tae whisked Zelda off to their room after saying goodbye to their families and friends.

Zelda giggled as Tae carried her into their hotel room. He kicked the door shut and made a beeline for the bed, laying her down on it before leaning over her. He settled his arms next to her head and muttered,

“Did I ever tell you how much I like this dress?”

“No. You do?”

He settled down next to her on the bed, wrapping his arm around her waist before using his other hand to play with the mesh sleeve that clung to her arm.

“Yes. You look gorgeous in it. The gold details make your skin pop.”

Zelda blushed. “You think so?”

“Mhm,” he hummed as his fingers trailed down her arm, making her shiver. He leaned up again and kissed the shell of her ear before murmuring, “did you have fun tonight?”

She grinned. “I did. Did you?”

“It was a bit busy. But yes, I had fun. We should dance together more often.”

“We should.”

She ran her fingers through his hair before hooking her finger under his chin, causing him to look up at her. She pulled herself up ever so slightly, planting a soft kiss on his lips.

“I love you,” she whispered.

He smiled, letting go of her wrist and bringing his hand up to cup her jaw. “I love you more.”

He caught her giggle in his mouth as he bet down to kiss her again. He reached for the top of her dress, undoing one of the hooks. Then another one. And another. He traced his finger across the bare skin of her back.

“You’re so soft,” he murmured against her lips.

She grinned. “You like that?”

“Mhm.” He kissed her jaw. Then the top of her neck.

“You smell good. Really good.”

“Better than I usually smell?”

“Mmm, no. Just different.” She reached for his jacket. “Take this off.”

He clicked his tongue before sitting up to unbutton it. Then he tossed it to the side. She sat up next to him, embarrassed as the top of her dress slid down a bit. She pushed it back up before scooting over to him.

“You look really good in white button-ups.”

He laughed, pulled her up into his lap before wrapping his arms around her waist.

“Do I?”

“Mhm,” she hummed in response. She wrapped her arms around his neck before leaning up to kiss him again.

“Are you ready to have some fun?”
