Honestly one of the most important bits of Emily characterization to me in chapter one is how she keeps making promises, she promises the dog isn't a vengeful ghost, she promises to Will that she won't look at the shuck, and it's like she lives such a deeply uncertain life but she's still swearing recklessly she's willing to pledge herself to certainty. And so much of working her out was working out that she would always give her whole being to the world to help it, she just never had the chance until Will. And that's another point of what he's doing, why he's so so important, he gives her the chance to be the stability for others that she needs.
