When I move has been stuck in my head like it deserves I love that song so much y’all remember when I said Tomboy was the song of the year back when it came out and then I said Nazababara was the song of the year? I’m sorry but When I Move is clearly song of the year. Not that the others weren’t good and don’t get me wrong I fucking love Rolling Quartz so much they are my favs this generation but y’all how can I not get excited over 2nd gen. These 2nd gen girl groups all coming back this year to perform on stage whether it’s a new song or a medley of old songs or whatever it’s everything. We got, I specifically got blessed by not only 9Muses, Tara, Girls Generation, 2NE1, Afterschool and Kara but I also got Teen Top, 2PM, U-Kiss and Big Bang which, although aren’t girl groups it was iconic nonetheless. And these are all groups that I got into first after Shinee and Exo so seeing these idols again after so long showing the younger gen that they still got it is such a moment for me. It makes me happy to see it.
I remember when H.O.T came back to perform on running man and the fans were so excited and feeling every emotion and I thought it was so wholesome seeing a group you grew up with again after so long and there was even others who were excited for when Big Bang could do something like this and then IT HAPPENED. And then like we even get bands like Ftisland and cnblue to come back which is great but idk if they’re 2nd gen but still! It’s so cool to see and Sunye came back which is awesome and there’s even soloists like Hatfelt, Sunmi and Yubin that are still going which is so cool and Rain came back which that was fun even tho he’s like what 1st gen and Boa is still in the game. I just love seeing it and I love when the younger generation of idols get to perform songs by these groups. I would love to see Fx comeback tho an DBSK that would def complete my list of older generations. Wonder if CSJH would be willing to comeback like S.E.S and Sechkies did ugh I would love that tho.
OH WHAT WOULD BE AMAZING TO SEE IF ALL THE GROUPS I JUST MENTIONED DID LIL COVERS OF WHEN I MOVE GEEZ OMG LIKE KARA AND GIRLS GENERATION DOING COVERS OF EACH OTHERS REUNION SONGS UGH THAT WOULD BE PERFECT. This is why I love the whole idols doing each other’s songs on tiktok trend. Idk how it started but I love it so much cause not only do they get to interact with so many artist but they look like they’re really enjoying it and it gives lesser known groups a chance to interact and capture the interest of people who are watching the collabs like for example Alexa and Nature. And it’s like the whole industry is doing it, the younger generation, the older generation, soloists, khiphop artists, and they all dance to each other’s songs and god I am in love with this trend idk whoever invented it thank you cause it’s my favorite thing ever. And it looks like we’re slowly getting collab stages at award shows and music shows in general back which is fantastic. Seeing the current generation of idols getting together and mixing around and dancing to any song even the older ones that’s so cool. It’s my favorite thing. If I was an idol it would be a dream cause it would get to dance with all of my favs lol. And it’s cute when the now idols are fans of older groups and then they get to dance with them like Sunmi and Dreamcatcher it’s everything. It just opens up this whole new fun activity for idols to do I can’t get enough of it. And I love love when groups get studio choomed and they get to go on it’s live and do relay dances it’s another favorite thing of mine.
Anywee When I Move slaps, I love love love the song so much, beyond love the song it makes me want to dance ugh I love Kara I’m so happy they got to come back and I hope I can find more idols dancing to it. So far I’ve only found Mirae and I adore them for all the Kara dances they’ve done. OH I WOULD SIMPLY DIE IF ROLLING QUARTZ DID A COVER OF WHEN I MOVE AHHHH THATS ANOTHER THING BANDS NEED TO COVER MORE SONGS. Like Rolling Quartz and N.Flying and Xdinary Heroes is doing a few now and then but boy would I love more. I just want more covers and more idols dancing to each other’s songs it’s one of the only good and wholesome moments in the industry. Ok I’m sorry for the rant I think I’m done now.
WAIT WAIT OK CRAXY, ALICE (Elris), ROLLING QUARTZ, SKYLE, MIRAE, AND T.A.N ALL HAVE MVS AT THE PARADISE DINER which I think is relatively new but I first saw it in the Nazababara mv and I think it’s super cute like it’s a cute location and I think it’s a real business like I don’t think it’s like just a set or a pop up diner but it’s super cool and honestly total cute date/hangout spot tho and all these groups use the location differently kinda but I love to see it. I even gave the diner a stupid nickname; Paradise Diner Sunbaenim 😔😤💅

Let's talk about MAGICA ✨
There are 6 members of Magica - from left to right: main vocalist and eldest Haerin; main dancer and visual Yubin; main vocalist and youngest member Izzy; lead vocalist Dani; leader and main rapper Josie; and finally lead rapper Eunji.
They are a group under DBD Entertainment, which tends to emphasize "coolness" in their groups. Magica specifically fits the girl crush niche (though they refer to it as "witch crush" and many of their songs and MVs have a sort of "magical, witchy" bent to them).
They debuted a little under 2 years before the start of Star x Crossed with a double title track of Loca and Boombayah, showcasing both the seductive pull of magic (Loca) and the effervescent fun of it (Boombayah). If you're thinking "Kit that sounds like you're just trying to justify using Boombayah"... shh.
While they were pretty much a hit from the start, it wasn't until their 3rd release, La Vie en Rose that they were considered a force to be reckoned with. One of the last tracks that AppleTree produced for them, La Vie en Rose was their first major win (especially as they beat longterm mainstays of the S-Pop charts Lion Girls and Dazy)
Their fanclub is called Hex - their biggest fansite is known as Hexagram.
For you k-pop fans:
Magica's win for La Vie en Rose against Lion Girls and Dazy is very much a reference to 4Minute beating 2ne1 and Girls' Generation.
In my mind the various members are inspired by a couple different idols...
Haerin is inspired by CLC Seunghee. Just straight up LMAO when I first designed Magica I was like "yeah I want a Seunghee."
Eunji is inspired by AOA Choa, CLC Yeeun, and Mamamoo Hwasa. Which is a weird mix, I know, but its mainly just the "iconic look" (and "will or should go solo" feel. Just inherent star quality and skill)
Josie is very much a combination of 2ne1 CL, (G)I-dle Soyeon and EXID L.E./Elly. Just a bunch of really good rappers. Josie writes her own raps.
Dani is AOA Seolhyun.
Yubin was mainly inspired by (G)I-dle Soojin but also by Oh My Girl YooA and Blackpink Lisa.... She is the weakest member vocally.
Iseul (Izzy) was inspired by Blackpink Rosé & Red Velvet Wendy.
Their group dynamics are............... interesting.

30 Reasons Why
Chapter 1: We are an iconic duo like
Warning: None Word count: About 1k
<- Previous chapter [01/30] Next chapter ->
-
It was a well known fact that Yoohyeon couldn’t keep secrets for long. With just the right questions and perhaps a little whining from you, they just spill from her lips. Her members that you are on your way to visit knows that. Her fans that are also currently watching alongside the live with you also knows that, and with the group’s comeback right around the corner, you decided to pop by her dorm with snacks in hand to give her a energy boost. Despite being the partner of one of their members, the managers had made it clear to you from the start that you get no special treatment, and had to wait like everyone else. You were fine with that, even though your girlfriend would more often than not start randomly humming snippets of the songs enough for you to piece them together before staring at you in shock when she realizes what she did. It was hilarious to see that within the first ten minutes of the group’s live did Yoohyeon start to struggle being thrown questions about spoilers and stumbling over words before needing the rest of the members to cover for her while she sat with a small pout on her face, complaining softly to the other members on why she was always picked on by the fans.
Chuckling and shaking your head, you closed the live app to send your girlfriend a text as you reached the dorm. Digging through your bag for your copy of the key, your phone vibrated signaling that Yoohyeon probably saw your message and is probably finding an excuse to leave the camera’s sights for a few moment to spend with you. Inserting the key and opening the door as silently as you could while you stepped in and pulled up the chat, you were flooded with a spam of heart emojis and stickers from the woman. Locking the door behind you, eyes not leaving the screen, you saw a pair of feet out of the corner of your eye in front of you. Looking up, you were greeted with the sight of your girlfriend grinning happily at you. Instinctively, you mirrored her expression as you walked further in, but not before toeing off your shoes to slip into one of the indoor slippers. Stepping into her open arms, they wrap around you warmly as you rest your head on her chest and lifted your head slightly to nuzzle at her jawline while she gently rocks the both of you side to side in her embrace.
There wasn’t really a need for her to voice her appreciation for you doing a surprise visit during comeback season with the way her eyes shined when you looked up at her, or the way her smile softened as she stared lovingly at you. Leaning down, she gently brushed her nose against yours in a little eskimo kiss before leaning her forehead on yours with a content sigh and closing her eyes.
“I brought you your favorite snacks, and also some stuff for the rest of the girls.” Hearing you whisper, her eyes snap open as she eagerly looked down at the bags in your hand, and back up at you before giving you a kiss while you chuckled silently at her enthusiasm when it came to her snacks. “Now, go back in there and try not to cause so much problems for your unnies, alright? I’ll be here after your live is over. You’re doing amazing.” Pressing another kiss onto your cheeks, Yoohyeon happily bounced back into the room to continue on with the live with her members as you moved yourself into the kitchen to lay out the snacks for everyone. Sitting in one of the chairs, you opened the live again but muted it to listen to them talk in real time and watch their reactions. Seeing how Yoohyeon became more composed when she went back into the camera view, your smile softened, happy about the effect your encouragement had on her.
You suppose that there was a delay in the stream, but feeling a pair of hands land on your back made you jolt up in surprise with a gasp and you turned around to see a hunched over Gahyeon laughing at your reaction. Sighing at the youngest’s antics, you shook your head as Yoohyeon ran into the kitchen to pull you into another hug from behind you. The rest of the members were quick to fill into the place as they started multiple conversations at once while Yoohyeon happily rested her chin on your shoulder and you turned slightly to give her a quick peck to her cheeks. Although rowdy, you could pick up from all the conversations about your timing being perfect to “fix” your girlfriend before she accidentally spoiled a part of the comeback again leading to her whining and burying her face in your neck and hiding from them.
“It’s almost like the two of you are like two halves of a person.” Yubin’s comment made you turn slightly to tilt your head at her, wanting for her to elaborate while Yoohyeon yells at the rest of the members, still wrapped around you. “I think that the both of you complete one another.” Warmth started building within your chest, as you processed what she said. Not knowing how to respond, you smiled and nodded at her. Looking back at Yoohyeon, you started think through her words, and how miserable you both got when she had to go on tours. You’d really be incomplete without her, and her, you. Noticing your staring, Yoohyeon stopped her yelling mid sentence to beam brightly at you, and press a comforting kiss onto your lips as the rest erupt into cheers and playful booing of the display of affection right in front of their snacks. Pulling away, she shared a giggle with you and turned back to yelling at her members once again, face slightly flushed from the teasing but voice steadily proud to show you off to them.
We are an iconic duo
like Sherlock and Watson

Citypop, but Korean and one of its great representatives
I'm sure that thanks to the TikTok app many of us listened to the song "Stay with Me" by the late Miki Matsubara and thanks to this many people got closer to City Pop, but what exactly is City Pop? It is a subgenre of j-pop that was very popular in the prosperous Japan of the 80s, mixing dance pop, funk, soul and even a touch of jazz, giving us a feeling of nostalgia in times when some of us were not even born and making us imagine office workers leaving work to then go dancing in a nightclub in the night city of Tokyo or even imagine parties on the beach, all with a cheerful theme. Some of the most important representatives of City Pop are Tatsuro Yamashita who is considered a pioneer of this genre, followed by his wife Mariya Takeuchi with her most famous song "Plastic Love", the already mentioned Miki Matsubara, Tomoko Aran, Anri (one of my favorite singers), Taeko Onuki and Momoko Kikuchi, among others.
Tumblr media
In recent years it can be perceived that this genre is coming back and going viral with origin possibly in Youtube searches and recommendations generating a completely different world to new listeners. Thanks to this trend and musical influence, other countries are adopting this genre using the nostalgic 80's happy rhythms, among those countries is South Korea that mixes elements of the past and contemporary adding their own unique touch, influencing famous kpop stars and groups such as f(x) ("All Night"), Wonder Girls with their album "Reboot" (highly recommended), CLC ("Where are you? "), Sunmi ("pporappippam"), Red Velvet ("Ladies Night"), Shinee ("1 of 1"), Twice ("Say Something"), among others.
Recently a not very well known artist is giving much to talk about for beginning of this album she makes us evident her arrival at Gimpo airport in South Korea (I found it emotional and hopeful). The singles that complete this album also take us back in time, being considered by some as a cult piece for City Pop fans. My recommended songs from this album are: "Cherries Jubiles", ''SHADE”, ''Neon”, ''SOUL LADY" and "I FEEL LOVE".
Tumblr media
This year again she charms us with her first mini album "timeabout" with a total of 6 songs including her main track "Insomnia" following this method of using synthesizers, guitars with simple riffs and a clear advance in the quality of Yukika's voice, she even gave us a dance practice of her main track. My recommended songs from this album are: "Love Month", "PUNG!", "Insomnia" and "TIME TRAVEL".
I wish with all my strength that Yukika will be more recognized because through her works it is evident the talent she has. Bonus: Today, September 20, a new single "Loving You" has just been released for you to check out.
And as a last recommendation in this Korean City Pop space, I recommend iconic songs of this movement, “Lady” by Yubin, “We ride” by Brave girls, “See You Again” by Yerin Baek, “& New” by Eyedi (very little known) and also a producer and singer called Bronze, last year he released his studio album "Aquarium" where he literally saves my year 2020, he has a collaboration with Yukika and LUNA, among others.
Tumblr media
I leave you also my playlist where you will find a compilation of good Korean City Pop.

Amber ive been loving your album rankings! would you be interested in doing sunmi's full moon ep or the exo overdose mini album?
omg i just noticed ur lee joo young prof pic that's incredible has that always been there. i wanna do both! omg they're both 2014 albums that were like genre defining genre defying iconic at the time i'm so excited. i'm familiar with both but haven't listened to either fully. full moon - sunmi
Tumblr media
i'm actually a little emotional about this ep rn cuz i watched come back home where yu jaesuk and friends + sunmi + rain went to sunmi's old apartment in cheongdamdong where she lived while making the full moon ep. it's my darling sunmi's solo debut! it was like entirely a jyp project but that's just how solo debuts are sometimes i guess. she was so young, like only 20 right? and my parents said that they were surprised to see sunmi still successful as a solo for so long because after wonder girls' mysterious disappearance (their words lol sarajeotda) no one was expecting sumi to debut solo and do well. she might've been the precedent for taemin too. sunmi wasn't a maknae but it was still a big deal for a young sweet member of a major group to debut solo with a sexy concept.
1. 24 hours - sunmi's debut single!! prerelease track!! iconic! honestly more people cover this than full moon which is interesting. the choreo is in fact iconic so it makes sense. a fave track of gay male dancers specifically she did this for the gays.
2. full moon - title track! brave brothers production of course iconic. "the first collaboration of jyp and brave sound" sunmi said she didn't realize the intro was so long when she was promoting it lol. ah what a classic, creepy halloween-y concept. i really loved the creepy old house aesthetic a lot of 2nd gen mvs had actually whenever i see a callback to it (abandoned by wonder girls) it's a v welcome surprise. 3. who am i - love a yubin sunmi collab <3 i like the cinematic feel of the song. the production is p american pop style but i'm into it.
4. burn
4. frozen in time
5. if that was you let's go exo overdose! i'm not actually super familiar with exo's bsides or history so this is gonna be fun.
Tumblr media
1. love love love - this is one of my fave exo bsides of all time but forgot the title (i thought it was moonlight sonata?). god it's incredible. the kinda cascading sounds and piano sounds are def to be like ~oriental~ but kpop that use that just sounds good i forgive the self orientalization. this could be a 2020 exo subunit title track. 2. thunder - rnb!!!!!!!! 2000s rnb!!!!! the glass shattering effects. the clicking noises later. the harmony. wow. a perfect kpop rnb song. vocals production melodic topline all so good. no wonder exo became the kings of kpop. 3. overdose - all i remember from 2014 is that i could never finish the mv because of the flashing lights and i tried again and i was correct lol. i had to watch it just now in bits and pieces. looking at them just makes me go awwww they were BAAABIES esp kai and kyungsoo they're so cute. god the choreo is so iconic too. was exo one of the groups that started the whole third gen boy group rebellious youth concept?? or did someone else start it but they followed. because their debut was SO very second gen to establish them as tvxq's successors and heavy hitters like sm is doing with aespa rn. but by 2014 they're doing rebellious youth like all the other groups at the time? but with those cute suit outfits too it's that very polished very well made feel that tries to set them apart as an sm boy group. anyway excellent iconic song amazing flawless vocals. 4. moonlight - gorgeous classic simple 2000s rnb ballad. 5. run - it's a very 2013 almost like indie folk pop alt rock base???? what??? i was not expecting this?????? man they were CURRENT this SHOULD HAVE BEEN on the US radio for all of 2014-2017 it's like such a perfect encapsulation of radio pop billboard top 20 trends at that time but with like sophistication and interesting sounds. i'm jealous of korean teenagers who got to soundtrack their lives with this oh man.

Sequitura’s guide to Kpop if for some reason you want to get into it
(Not recommended, the fandom culture is insane, though there are some nice songs)
These are songs that I really liked on the first listen and continue to like. Some songs take a while to grow on me, like “TT” by Twice. Those aren’t on this list.
They're not my top 100 - those would be too particular to my tastes and I tried to cover a range of musical styles.
* means that the song is a b-side (not the primary promoted song in an album) and thus probably doesn’t have a music video.
Oh My Girl (cheerful group with KILLER catchy melodies)  -Windy Day -Dolphin -Coloring Book -Closer -(optional listening) Secret Garden if you really liked Closer -(optional listening) Nonstop if you like catchy dance tunes, but after some of their really good stuff it'll pale in comparison. It's good gateway Oh My Girl, though.
Blackpink (they do a lot of hype songs; cool vocal colors; actually not bad rapping for kpop) -As If It's Your Last -Playing With Fire -Lovesick Girls
f(x) (experimental girl pop) -Rum Pum Pum -Nu Abo
KARA (exhilarating dance tunes) -Step
Brown-Eyed Girls (they've covered pretty much every genre at this point, but boundary-pushing is their main theme) -Kill Bill -(optional listening) Abracadabra (not personally my thing, but the EDM bassline was super fresh at the time and still is) -(optional listening) Warm Hole (really catchy 60s-esque bop)
Taeyeon (former main singer in Girl’s Generation) -4 Seasons -(optional listening) Spark (not the greatest song in the world, but the lead-in to the chorus is great.)
T-ara (ridiculously cheesy dance tunes) -Roly Poly -Sugar Free -(optional listening) Lovey Dovey (if you loved Roly Poly)
Mamamoo (originally jazz, now... something else) -Piano Man -Um Oh Ah Yeah -(optional listening) Woo Hoo (the harmonies will blow your mind) -(optional listening) Decalcomanie (GREAT for early 2000s rock Amy Winehouse-esque fans. I'm only mildly a fan of that style, but even I can admit the vocal pyrotechnics are incredible.) -(optional listening) Pride of 1cm (a rap diss track about each other’s heights) -(optional listening) Girl Crush (HEY YOUUUU)
Spica (sadly short-lived group that was *really* musical; did jazz authentically and well) -You Don’t Love Me
IU (soloist whose style has run the gamut, but she mostly writes her own music, now.) -Eight -The Red Shoes -Blueming -23
AOA (originally a band concept who came back with uh... sexy, which isn’t a genre, but they still have good songs) -Heart Attack -(optional listening) Like a Cat -(optional listening) Elvis
Wonder Girls (retro who came back with a band concept) -Why So Lonely
Sunmi (her stuff can take a while to get under your skin. It’s quite dark under the surface, which I like.) -Heroine -Pporippipam -(optional listening) 24 Hours -(optional viewing) Noir, for the music video mainly
Yubin (former rapper for Wonder Girls) -Lady -Thank U Soooo Much
Girl’s Generation AKA SNSD (one of the original icons. You won’t find a more polished group anywhere.) -Paparazzi -(optional listening) Lion Heart (for those who love the 60s sound)
BoA (original soloist icon. Watch her dance and sing live.) -Mannish Chocolat -(optional listening) Woman
Itzy (currently conquering the “teen rebels” genre) -Wannabe -Don’t Give a What -(optional listening) Icy (it’s divisive, but personally I find the attitude super charming and the instrumental fresh and unique rather than irritating.)
Red Velvet (have some great RnB songs, as well as some lovely summer ones, as well as some “lol wut” ones) -Psycho -You Better Know* -Body Talk* -(optional listening) Russian Roulette (slightly off-kilter pop song and catchy af) -(optional listening) Look* (AMAZING 80s throwback) -(optional listening) Swimming Pool* (one of those super cheesy pop songs that becomes transdescent in the chorus) -(optional listening) Sassy Me* (this song is crazy) -(optional listening) Mr. E* (if you loved You Better Know) -(optional listening) Sunny Side Up* (if you loved Body Talk and Psycho)
2NE1 (one of the first “badass”-themed girl groups.) -I Am the Best -Fire -(optional listening) I Don’t Care (tackling slow/emotional)
Hyuna (a great performer who sells any song she’s in) -Trouble Maker -365 Fresh -Bubble Pop
CLC (they’ve unfortunately probably broken up now. Super talented group who’s bounced from genre to genre trying to get something to stick, leaving bops along the way.) -Pepe -Show* -No
Weki Meki (they’re slowly finding their niche, which is likely to be smooth club stuff) -Crush -(optional listening) Cool (I recommend watching their relay dance/dance practices and giving Lua some attention)
BOL4 (“indie”-ish band; not a big fan of most of their stuff) -Travel (but they did strike addictive gold when they went more rock)
Gfriend (Strings, guitar, and some of the best/most consistent vocalists in kpop right now) -Navillera -Mago
Dreamcatcher (a very unique, metal-influenced sound. Amazing dancing. Probably supported by the most humane company in kpop right now.) -Scream -Over the Sky* -Black or White* -(optional listening) And There Was No One Left* (idk why but this one hits me. It’s so sparse and yet makes you feel so disconcerted.) -(optional listening) Silent Night* (if you like the musical aesthetics of the song “Everytime We Touch”) -(optional listening) Can’t Get You Out of My Mind* (if you liked Silent Night)
Twice (“The Nation’s Girl Group”) -Fancy (kind of the only song of theirs that I adore; ask me for more recs if you really like them.)
Ailee (known as the Beyonce of Korea) -I Will Show You (an unironic “yasss” song) -Heaven (gee, this song is sad but never lets up with the power vocals as well, which I think works better than a straight-up slow ballad)
Loona (I don’t really click with them, but a few songs have hit me first listen) -Voice* (it sounds like a beautiful, brisk skate across a mile-long lake) -New (by Yves – it’s super flowy) -ViViD (by Heejin – I love sassy swing tunes what can I say) -(optional listening) Heart Attack primarily for the music video
EXID (power vocals + brass + hip-hop? I don’t really get it tbh but good singing can sell me anything.) -Ah Yeah
After School (I don’t know this group but this song is a bop. Might be one of my top 20 favorites of all time and I only heard it yesterday.) -Bang!
Sunny Hill (very unique social commentary music) -Pray (warning: one of the most disturbing music videos I’ve ever seen, but definitely worth a watch if you have a strong stomach) -The Grasshopper Song (music video is nicer)
(now we move into territory with guys in it. I personally think male artists in Korea release fewer great songs than female artists, beccause the general trend is to be “dark” or “moody” compared to the more melodic trends in female groups. If you like strong choreography or braggadocio vibes, though, you’ll probably like them better.)
AKMU (singer-songwriter sibling pair and probably my favorite composers in Korea right now.) -Dinosaur -How People Move -(optional listening) Happening (somehow gives coffee shop music a driving rhythm) -(optional listening) Like Ga Na Da (this is a song about the alphabet. It is still insanely catchy.) -(optional listening) Melted (sad ballad)
TXT (this group has other songs, but I don’t like any of them nearly as much.) -Runaway (like the classic boy group sound set on fire. A really nice pre-chorus of all things. Love the guitar.)
Ateez (they might become the next BTS; not sure.) -Wonderland (like... pirate hip hop/rock. Watch with choreography.) -Wave (a surprisingly potent summer song) -(optional listening) Say My Name
Shinee (some of the most talented dudes in kpop) -Lucifer (probably the only kpop song to pull off a one-note chorus well. Sounds like it was produced by people who evolved in a different universe.) -View (super smooth, groovy deep house song.)
Oneus (their good stuff goes hard) -A Song Written Easily -Valkyrie
Stray Kids (don’t know the group; song is great) -Miroh
A.C.E. (one of the only kpop groups doing hardstyle and surprisingly enough, I like it.) -Goblin -Cactus
Seventeen (don’t really know the group; song is great) -Mansae
