This mosque was built on the spot where Prophet Muhammad's standard bearer, Abu Ayub Al Ansari was martyred during the siege of Istanbul. The construction was ordered by the conqueror of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet Il. The mosque, built under the name of Eyup Sultan was also the first mosque in Istanbul. With time, the mosque fell into disrepair; during the reign of Sultan Selim Ill the minarets were saved and the rest of the mosque was reconstructed. The baroque style mosque that we can see today is this same mosque. The coronation (sword-girding) ceremonies of the princes acceding to the throne were held here.
