music recommendations because i have some thoughts™

i don't wanna be that person who's like "my music taste is so weird lol" but i find that very often most of my friends don't really care for the music i like so i thought i'd just make a long ass post about it on tumblr instead. Fair warning, I'm very passionate about MIKA and The Mechanisms and so this very quickly got VERY long because it is part of my ongoing campaign to convince people to listen to mika and the mechs.

1) MIKA in general, but especially My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019) and No Place In Heaven (2015) (especially the Deluxe version!!)

MIKA is a kind of British singer (half Lebanese, grew up in France blabla), and you probably know him for Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy from his first album Life In Cartoon Motion from 2007. He writes a lot of FUN music, interspersed with the occasional slightly sadder song, especially when looking at an album like No Place In Heaven, which contains a lot of songs with gay themes, resulting in some songs that are just a little bit ouch. He's originally classically trained and has a frankly RIDICULOUS range and idk he just writes very good pop music. Also I have so much respect for that time he talked about how a lot of pop is very fake, with like expensive cars and stilettos and mini skirts in the snow and said "Because I walk down the street, and I don't see any of that. I see fat women and gay men. I don't know... That's real". He's written 5 albums; My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), No Place In Heaven (2015), The Origin Of Love (2012), The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009), and Life In Cartoon Motion (2007).

For starters, I recommend listening to Last Party, Origin Of Love, Grace Kelly, Blame It On The Girls, Blue, Happy Ending, Pick Up Off The Floor, Last Party, Underwater, Tomorrow and Tiny Love (yes this is a long list but i REALLY love MIKA). If you want a slightly broader palette that's not just my favourites, I recommend the Mika starter pack on spotify.

2) The Mechanisms. I warn you. I am making this a thing. I have been obsessed with the mechs since last march.

Boy, where to start? The Mechanisms were a British 9 member space pirate story-telling cabaret that "died" in January 2020. They rewrite songs to fit retellings of various stories. I don't even know what genre I'd describe them as, but probably folk but steam-punk?? Their 4 "main" albums are concept albums, and I honestly just recommend listening to the from beginning to end in chronological order. A good way to get into the mechs is also to listen to UDAD and then watching the live show on youtube or alternately try giving Death To The Mechanisms a listen, to get good quality live show audio of TBI and various other stuff. Also, it was streamed on YouTube and someone combined the footage with the album audio and it rocks. Really, I think the mechs' best selling points are honestly just their concept albums:

Once Upon a Time (In Space) Their first album from 2012. I'd say this is the most "easily digestible" for the general public, since it's a retelling of various fairytales. So, what if Old King Cole was in fact not merry, but rather a cold-blooded dictator, intent on colonising as much of the galaxy as possible. What if Snow White was a general, looking to avenge what King Cole did to her sister, Rose. What if Cinderella was to be wedded to Rose the day that King Cole attacked in order to kidnap Rose? But y'know, In Space and also like every other mechs album it's a beautiful tragedy. Fave songs are Old King Cole, Pump Shanty, and No Happy Ending.

Ulysses Dies at Dawn You guessed it, it's a story about Odysseus, or Ulysses because I guess Ulysses is easier to rhyme or fit in the meter or something, idk. Ulysses is a war hero of unknown gender who is said to keep something that could take down the corrupt Olympians, meanest families in the City, in a vault to which only they know the passcode. Oedipus, Heracles, Orpheus, and Ariadne have been hired by Hades, who happens to be The Mechs' quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, to get into Ulysses' vault. I didn't care much for udad at first, but honestly it's got some real bangers and the story is really good. UDAD weirdly stands out as the only of the concept albums to not feature any gay relationships, per se. Fave songs are Riddle of the Sphinx, Favoured Son, and Underworld Blues.

High Noon over Camelot This is my favourite mehcs album. So basically, this is Arthurian legend, but it's a space western and Jonny D'Ville does a bad southern accent. This is the story of the cowboy lovers Arther, Lancelot, and Guinevere searching for the Galfridian Restricted Acces Interface Login, or GRAIL, in order to stop their world from falling into the sun. Meanwhile, Mordred and Gawaine are ruling Camelot, and Mordred has convinced Gawaine to try to establish peace with the Saxons by whom Mordred was raised, but Gawaine hates viciously. If you love getting your heart broken and songs by a fucking off the rails batshit preacher I HIGHLY recommend hnoc. Fave songs are Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard, Blood and Whiskey, and Once and Future King. Honorary mention for Hellfire because it awakens something animalistic in me.

The Bifrost Incident TBI is the frankly only good adaptation of norse mythology I've ever known of, and I say that as Dane who was literally forced to learn things about norse mythology in school because it's my heritage or whatever. I've been listening to TBI a lot lately because it's VERY good. It's definitely the most refined of the mechs' albums (because it's the newest) but also I just love a little bit of cosmic horror. 80 years ago, Odin, the All-Mother, ruler of Asgaard, launched a train through the wormhole Bifrost that would reduce the travel between Asgaard and Midgaard from 3 months to 3 days, but things didn't go quite as planned. Lyfrassir Edda of the New Midgaard Transport Police is trying to solve the case of why suddenly the train has arrived 80 years late; to figure out whether it was accident or maybe it was sabotaged by Loki, who was allegedly sentence to death her murder of Baldur, by the Midgaardian resistance led by Loki's wife Sigyn, or maybe by Thor, who was to take over after Odin, and who holds quite the grudge because he used to be a friend of Loki's. You might've heard the song Thor from this album, it's apparently quite popular. Fave songs are Loki, Ragnarok III: Strange Meeting, and Ragnarok V: End of The Line. Yet again an honorary mention: Red Signal because while Lovecraft was a bitch, his invocations are fucking RAW.

Basically, the Mechanisms do all of their performances in character as captain first mate Jonny D'Ville, quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, pilot DrumBot Brian, master-at-arms Gunpowder Tim, science officer Raphaella la Cognizi, doctor Baron Marius Von Raum (neither a baron, nor a doctor), archivist Ivy Alexandria, engineer Nastya Rasputina, and The Toy Soldier, who is, as usual, present. You can find very obscure lore about the crew of the Aurora here, tidbits on Tales To Be Told and TTBT Vol. 2, such as One Eyed Jacks, The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchard, Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser, Lucky Sevens, and Lost in the Cosmos.

If you feel like listening to a full 40-50 minute album to find out if you like a band is a bit much, I recommend listening to one of the mini stories Alice, Swan Song, or Frankenstein, which are about 12, 5 and 9:30 minutes respectively.

3) The Amazing Devil You know that guy who played Jaskier in the Witcher? I got into The Amazing Devil from spotify recommending them because I listened to the mechs, and apparently Joey Batey from The Amazing Devil is the same Joey Batey who was in the Witcher. Both him and Madeleine Hyland are VERY talented singers and songwriters and their second album The Horror and the Wild makes me go out into the forest and SCREAM. I listened to it on repeat for like a month straight. I guess they'd also be considered folk, but like. New Folk. Also yes, this is another British artist, I don't know why I'm like this. I've never really gotten that into their first album, Love Run, but King slaps. As I understand there's this whole lore about the Blue Furious Boy and Scarlet Scarlet, Joey and Madeleine respectively, but unlike the Mechanisms it's actually possible to find out things about the actual real people and harder to find the obscure lore? I'm open for people to please help me. Fave songs are The Horror and the Wild, Farewell Wanderlust, and That Unwanted Animal, which is literally a third of their second album, but again. I haven't really listened to Love Run that much, and I just LOVE the harmonies on THATW. (also im gay and dramatic leave me alone)

4) dodie I have so much love for this woman. Like many others, I first knew dodie as doddleoddle on youtube. I think I first stumbled across her in probably 2015, because I distinctly already knew her before she released her first EP Sick of Losing Soulmates in 2016. I think I watched probably every video she's ever made in the span of a few weeks. I just loved her quiet sound and was absolutely HOOKED. Also she's actually the reason I got into MIKA originally, so thanks for that. Dodie just realeased her first album Build A Problem (in addition to her three EP's; the one mentioned above, You, and Human) and it slaps. Yes dodie is also British Fave songs are probably Monster, Rainbow, and In The Middle.

5) Cladia Boleyn Unfortunately, Claudia Boleyn only has three singles and that's it. She's been making content on youtube for quite a while, and that's how I first discovered her. I don't know what genre her music is, but I like it. The songs are Celesta, George, and Mother Maiden Crone, of which the latter is my favourite. I'm not saying Claudia Boleyn invented women in 2017 when she released Mother Maiden Crone, but she did. Also you guessed it, Claudia Boleyn is British.

6) Hozier I'm not about to tell you about Hozier. You know who he is. Listen to Nina Cried Power, Angel Of Small Death & The Codeine Scene, and Shrike. Also Hozier isn't stricly British in that he is definitely from A British Isle, but Ireland is not part of the UK. Give me a break.

7) Oh Land Oh Land IS DANISH. I like her early music best, because I'm not that into the electronic sound. I guess Oh Land is just you regular old pop, but with the occasional weird vibe? Oddly enough, I like her first album Fauna best. Unfortunately I haven't really listened to her newest album Family Tree much, but it seems good? Fave songs are Frostbite, Love You Better and Family Tree. I cried on the bus, first time I listened to the Danish version of Love You Better, Elsker Dig Mer because my mother tongue always just hits harder. Also Frostbite is Oh Land doing a duet with herself which is pretty cool.

8) Oysterband This is a live recommendation. I mean they're a decent folk band and all, but they're a fucking experience live. If you like folk and you ever get the opportunity to see Oysterband live, do it. Unfortunately, yes. They are British. Either way, they are incredible on a scene and I think they deserve a mention for that.

9) Ben Platt Honestly don't know much about this guy, but he's not British and he was in Dear Evan Hansen. He released an album in 2019, Sing To Me Instead, and I just think it's a good album, there isn't really not much more to it. Fave songs are Grow As We Go, Bad Habit, and In Case You Don't Live Forever.

Isabel of Aragon’s letter to her father, Fernando II of Aragon, in which she tells him about her life in Portugal, and expresses her feelings and worry about her parents and her sister-in-law following her brother’s death.

Isabel of Aragon was the firstborn child of the Catholic Monarchs, born in Dueñas, on 2 October 1470. When her parents ascended the throne of Castile in December 1474, she became the Princess of Asturias, sworn in as such during the session of the Cortes in April 1476. During the said session her hand was also promised in marriage to Ferdinand, Prince of Capua, the grandson of Ferdinand I of Naples, formerly having been engaged to Dauphin Charles [future Charles VIII of France]. After her brother Juan was born, on 30 June 1478, she became second in the line of succession. The negotiations with Portugal to end the war of the Castilian Succession began at the time, and according to the Treaty of Alcáçovas, signed on 4 September 1479, Isabel was to marry Alfonso, the grandson of Alfonso V of Portugal, the only son of Prince John of Portugal and his wife Eleanor of Viseu. It was also stipulated the infanta had to move to Portugal in order to live with her betrothed in the Castle of Moura, in the custody of Beatriz of Portugal, Duchess of Viseu, her mother’s aunt until 1483. The marriage was contracted by proxy in Seville, on 18 April 1490, and was ratified in Évora, on 27 November. One year later the prince fell off his horse and died. Isabel was claimed back by her parents. She was devastated, starved herself and plunged into depression, determined not to remarry. At first her father agreed not to force her into new marriage, but when John II of Portugal died in 1495, and Manuel I succeeded him, Fernando changed his mind, considering the new king had declined his proposal to marry his younger daughter, María. Manuel I was determined to marry Isabel. It cost the Catholic Monarchs a lot to persuade their daughter, and although she eventually agreed, she demanded something in return; the expulsion of Jews from Portugal, although it is being debated by scholars whether she had a definitive say in Manuel’s decision on the matter. Isabel's second marriage took place in Valencia de Alcántara, on 30 September 1497. Her brother, Prince Juan, died four days later, and shortly afterward his widow, Margaret of Austria, suffered a miscarriage. Those unfortunate events made Isabel and her newly-wed husband the new princes of Asturias, sworn in as such at the Cortes of Toledo, on 29 April 1498. Unfortunately, Isabel died in childbirth in Saragossa, on 23 August 1498, while she was waiting to be sworn in as the Princess of Girona by the Aragonese Cortes. Her son, Miguel de la Paz, died on 19 July 1500.

Most high and most puissant King, my Lord

And for the love of God, sometimes Your Highness ought to take a rest, with all the rest you might have, such distress is very sorrowful and disguised to kill. May God guard Your Highness as the Queen, my Lady, desires, and it seems to me such sorrow is particularly bad for the kidneys. I hope Your Highness has not felt it that way and never will. I kiss the feet and the hands of Your Highness for such favor you do me, by the care you have for my well-being, that everything I would do, following the orders of Your Highness, and everything that would come of it, is for my sake. I, my Lord, will work as much as I can to do so, and will do everything in my power to follow the customs of this place [Portugal], and later I will do so in everything. As for other trivialities of my household and the treatment I receive; no woman has been treated in a more honorable manner by her husband; and I believe it will serve Your Highness better that it is to my advantage and honor of my household, unlike it was under the King of Portugal, my Lord [John II], for he was not well-disposed. I am of such goodwill to show myself Portuguese that without such urgency as the counsel of Your Highness, which is a command to me, I have shown myself as such; and thus I determined to follow the rule of using horses, but now for the trip that we are to take, to visit the Queen of Portugal, my Lady [Eleanor of Viseu, John II of Portugal’s wife and Manuel I’s sister], the King, my Lord, let the Castilian women travel on mules, and the two Portuguese women, whom I already have in my household, are to go on horses that their father will provide them with, so they can have them in my stable. [The Catholic Monarchs’ court traveled on mules.] As for the other things of this place, [Portugal] if I had such a good knowledge of them as Your Highness has of those of that place [Castile and Aragon], when it was necessary for me to show myself Portuguese, considering there are a few Castilians here, I would already speak, but Your Highness should believe that since the majority of people I have to spend time with, are those whom I did not have much contact with when I was here for the first time, I still have much work to do in getting to know them. And without this, and knowing well the things of this place, which are very different from those of the other, I would err in what I would like to say. The King, my Lord, has told me to occupy myself with certain business, pray God I may do this in such a manner that I learn and so that it serves him and Your Highnesses. May God guard and increase the royal life and state of Your Highness with much pleasure, and let me serve Your Highness as I wish. The favor you do me, besides others, in writing to me about the state of the Queen, my Lady, and the Lady Princess [Margaret of Austria], God knows the pity I feel at all times, knowing they are not doing very well; I would like it to be extended, and for Your Highness to command someone to write to me about Your Highness, so that I am informed of everything.

Looking for Juan del Pilar

A long post on what records say about Gregorio del Pilar’s little known relative.

Disclaimer: Any opinions stated in this post are based on my interpretation of the sources I found. If there are more decisive sources, feel free to send them my way. This is also cross-posted as a long Twitter thread, with revisions done on this version.

Very little is known about Juan del Pilar. Even Carlo Cruz, the actor playing Juan, mentioned that material about Goyo’s cousin are lacking.

In the movie Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, he was first introduced as the cousin who shot at Goyo’s group swimming in the river. According to Vicente Enriquez from the Kalaw biography, while some swimming and shooting did happen, the relative wasn’t named.

“I have never seen Del Pilar nervous except once in Dagupan. The following happened: During one of our inspection trips, some Spanish prisoners had attempted to escape in a boat to bring them to an American ship anchored in Lingayen Bay. As a result of this, Del Pilar ordered that from then on the mouth of the river should be guarded.

One day, Del Pilar, Arellano (who was paymaster), and I decided to take a dip in the river. We told nobody about it. From one side, we heard somebody ordering us to halt. But we paid no heed, and instead we jumped into the water. At this, we heard shots, bullets whizzing near us. Obviously, our own men had mistaken us for the Spanish soldiers who have attempted to escape. I saw Del Pilar very pale for the first time. The official who ordered the volley of shots - who was Del Pilar’s relative - was punished for this imprudence.”

Which first led me to think that Juan may be fictional. I actually asked Direk Jerrold during a Q&A if Juan is fictional or not. To which he replied he’s a real person and pointed us to Simeon Villa’s journals where he was mentioned.

But before we go to Villa’s memoirs, let’s start with the “Juan H. del Pilar” who was listed as the godfather of Goyo’s youngest brother Jacinto (from the Kalaw bio):

On June 30, 1878, between four and five in the morning, Felipa Sempio gave birth to a son who was baptized with the name Jacinto, on the 3rd of July by Father Jose Vera. His godfather was Juan H. del Pilar.

It wasn’t explicitly mentioned but, given the name and date, this “Ninong Juan” was most likely an uncle.

In fact, Marcelo and Fernando (Goyo’s father) actually had a brother named Juan. An 1895 intel about Marcelo’s associates listed him as a lawyer and a stenographer of the tribunal (probably in Bulakan and yes the Spaniards were keeping tabs on them).

Juan del Pilar: about 42 years of age*, married, scribe and third-rate lawyer, is connected with the Tribunal as Secretary.

Brother of Marcelo, co-worker in La Solidaridad and cousin of Luis del Pilar, propagandist of that paper. [...]

In the last months of the term of the previous municipal administration, he was dismissed from the Tribunal by verbal order of the Provincial Government, which was able to produce complete proof of his anti-friar and anti-religious conduct.

In his dealings, he is cunning and shows that he is not only anti-friar but also anti-Spanish. There should be previous information about him.

*GT admin’s note: I don’t think this Juan was just 42 years old during this time. Juan was an older brother of Marcelo and the latter should be 45 years old by 1895.

Indeed Isaac Cruz (in his Goyo biography) lists “Juan H. del Pilar”, alongside other siblings of Marcelo del Pilar, to have joined the Propaganda Movement.

And from the same biography, Cruz actually names this “Tio Juan” as a Captain who served on both revolutions against Spain and America *gasp*

Juan H. del Pilar was a fiery Propagandist and worked with his brother Marcelo during the Propaganda movement. He joined the Revolution against Spain and later against the Americans. He served as a Captain.

So does this mean the movie got it wrong in portraying Juan? Perhaps not. Which now leads to the question: Where did Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral get the idea that this Juan was a younger cousin?

They probably got it from Jose Enriquez, a Tirad survivor and a younger brother of Vicente Enriquez (Jose wasn’t portrayed in the movie). From the Kalaw biography, he said it was him and “Juanchito del Pilar” (Goyo’s cousin) who informed Aguinaldo of Goyo’s death.

“When I heard someone shouting ‘The General is dead!’, I mounted my horse, and escaped. I met Emilio Garcia, Juanchito del Pilar (Gregorio’s cousin) and Inigo de Jesus on the way. Juanchito and I went as far as Cervantes in order to report the incident to Aguinaldo.”

Prior to Tirad, Kalaw already mentioned about a then-Lieutenant Juanchito del Pilar who was enlisted under the Del Pilar Battalion. This means that this Juanchito participated in sieges leading to the Liberation of Bulacan on June 24, 1900. It’s possible he was promoted to a Captain after the liberation.

“But Juanchito can be someone else!” you might say.

This is where Vicente Enriquez’s account comes in. Still from the Kalaw bio, Vicente mentioned a “Captain Juan del Pilar” present in Tirad and was with the company of another captain, Emilio Garcia, who was also mentioned from Jose Enriquez’s account. These two were in charge of constructing trenches.

“While the group was in Angake, Captains Juan H. del Pilar and Emilio Garcia constructed trenches in Tirad utilizitng General de Pilar’s plan.”

“As I reached our trenches above, I found Captains Juan H. del Pilar and Emilio Garcia and some soldiers, who informed me that soldiers in the trenches below had heroically and successfully resisted heavy shelling of the American cavalry.”

Unless there were two Juan del Pilars in Tirad, then I am very inclined to think that “Captain Juan H. del Pilar” and “Juanchito del Pilar” are the same. There is no info on who the father of this cousin was but if there were several Juans in the family, the nickname of “Juanchito” makes sense.

Also, Jose Enriquez’s statement (that it was him and Juanchito who told Aguinaldo about Goyo’s death) is somewhat supported by Simeon Villa’s memoirs. He mentioned there were two officers who informed Aguinaldo on what happened in Tirad.

December 2, 1899: At 5 o’clock in the afternoon the honorable president received a verbal report from two officers coming from Mount Tila*, to the effect that the Americans had taken all our trenches in Tila; that General Pilar had been killed by being shot through the head; that other soldiers had also been killed; and they, the officers, were sure the Americans must be in Angaqui at this very hour. According to the statement of the officers, General Pilar died at 10 o’clock a.m.

And speaking of Simeon Villa’s memoirs he mentioned “Captain Juan del Pilar” several times and so did Telesforo Carrasco (the Spaniard) in his memoirs. For the next parts, I’ll be combining entries from both Villa’s and Carrasco’s memoirs.

At the first part of Villa’s memoirs, he mentioned a Capt. Juan H. del Pilar as part of the Sixth Company of the First Bulacan Battalion.

Do note that even if Juan may not have been explicitly mentioned in some entries, he should’ve had the same arduous and perilous experience as everyone who was with Aguinaldo during his escape.

On December 16, 1899, Villa notes that Aguinaldo called for a council meeting and Juan was part of it. Interestingly, he didn’t seem to have an opinion of his own.

At 6 p.m. the honorable president named the following as members of a council to take place this night, viz: Colonel Sytiar, Señor Barcelona, director of the health department; Villa, sub-inspector of the staff; Majors Jeciel and Gatmaitan, and Capt. Juan H. del Pilar. [...]

Having explained all these things, the honorable president then asked Captain Pilar what opinion he had to express. The latter replied that he had no opinion to express, but that he agreed with the honorable president’s declaration, but Colonel Sytiar answered this, saying that Captain Pilar’s answer was not to the point, as we are all under the honorable president’s orders and ready; what was desired was that the Captain Pilar should freely express his own personal opinion. On hearing this Captain Pilar replied in the very same phrases he had first used.

By February 1900, after a grueling trek, Aguinaldo and his group set up camp somewhere in Isabela. There, they experienced relative peace and have settled into a routine which involved horse racing in the afternoons. And yes, Juan or rather his horse participated in these races.

February 8, 1900: In the second race the horses of Señor Villa. and Captain Pilar were started; Señor V's horse gained from the start and finally, won.

February 9, 1900: The honorable president started out at 9 o'clock in the morning to examine our outposts, being accompanied by his adjutant, Lieutenant Carasco, Senor Villa, subinspector of military hospitals, Captain Pilar, and a squad of cavalry: he returned about 12;30 o'clock, quite satisfied over the good spirits of the soldiers.

At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, as customary, two horse races took place. The first one was between the horses of Señors Jeciel and Pilar. It was hotly contested by both horses, but Señor Pilar's horse won by a length.

February 10, 1900: Speaking of our life in this camp, it may be reduced to the following: All awaken, on sound of the bugle, at 5 a. m., and arrange everything in order, so that at any given moment we will not have to preoccupy ourselves with anything but our defense. At 7 o'clock we have breakfast, after which each one gives his attention to the duties assigned him. At 12 o'clock, we take dinner or luncheon. Afterwards we rest a little until 3 or 3.30 o'clock, at which hour the horse racing commences. At 6 o'clock we have supper.

[...] At 4 o'clock the horse races came off, the first one being between the horses of Señors Jeciel and Pilar, in which Senor Jeciel's horse won.

On March 16, 1900 (probably in preparation for Aguinaldo’s birthday), Juan and his soldiers were tasked to look meat and salt. They came back after 3 days, not only with inadequate meat but prisoners as well.

By the order of the honorable president, this morning at 5 o’clock 25 soldiers, under command of officers Del Pilar and Valentin, set out for the Gullayen settlement to secure in said settlement some 20 carabaos to furnish us all meat, and likewise some salt, since for some days we have been eating neither meat nor salt, though we have never been in want of rice, which exists here in abundance.

March 19, 1900: Our soldiers who, on the 16th instant, went to Guilayen settlement came back this afternoon at 2 o’clock, bringing the honorable president one carabao and one [goat]. They had been unable to secure the twenty carabaos, as was their intention, since these were not to be found. They also brought with them as prisoners two Christians, captured by them in the mountains before reaching Guilayen, and suspected of being American spies.

On March 21, 1900, Carrasco talked about Aguinaldo’s birthday preparations. Juan was to deliver a speech.

Our mess hall has been completed; likewise the mess hall for the troops, which is in the shape of a triangle. I have bidden the head of the rancheria to bring me three or four jars of basi, for the fiesta to be celebrated tomorrow, on the occasion of the birthday His Excellency the President. [...]

Speeches to be delivered by Dr. Barcelona, the marques de los camotes, Señor Bautista, Captain Pilar and Sergeant Luis. In response to all this, as finale, the Honorable President thanking everybody.

On Aguinaldo’s birthday, March 22, 1900, both Villa and Carrasco didn’t mention specifically if Juan was able to deliver a speech but the following entries should give you an idea what happened on this day.

Villa: Then, on account of today being the birthday of the invincible chieftain and liberator of the Philippines, all the officers and soldiers who are accompanying him on these mountain journeys have come to congratulate him since yesterday evening at 5:30 o’clock; and 25 soldiers have organized a band of music, using as instruments the bamboos musicong bombong [sic]. Their congratulations were solemn and imposing, because the honorable president, after receiving them affectionately, offered sweetmeats, cigars, and wines to all [...]

Carrasco: After the meal, Dr. Barcelona and other officers spoke [...] After the speeches the National Anthem was played, and then we retired.

Still during Aguinaldo’s birthday. Villa mentioned about the Bulacan Battalion getting emotional because Barcelona reminded them of Gregorio’s death. I think it’s safe to assume Juan became emotional because he was a relative.

The happy meeting broke up at 1:30 o’clock, all the soldiers having gone away satisfied as far as their stomachs were concerned, but not so morally, because Señor Barcelona, in his toast, told them that as Bulacan soldiers they ought to imitate him who was their general, the valiant Gregorio del Pilar, who died on Mount Tirad while defending the person of the honorable president. As that general was greatly beloved by all his soldier (the Bulacan Battalion), these on hearing Señor Barcelona’s expression were reminded of how he had died, and many of them burst into tears.

On April 16, 1900, Carrasco noted that a memorial for Goyo was held. Juan was one of those who read elegies for the fallen general.

As had been agreed on, we held on this day the commemoration in honor of General Gregorio del Pilar. At noon we all gathered in the troops’ mess hall. At the center was the table for the chiefs and officials and at the head of the table was a floral wreath with this inscription: “To the ill-fated General Gregorio H. del Pilar, who died heroically on Mount Tilad during the battle of December 2 last, this offering is dedicated by his brothers and companion in arms.” After the meal, Captain Pilar, Lieutenant Bautista and myself read elegies in honor of the departed general. The Honorable President then pronounced an eloquent oration, after which we all retired to our lodgings.

On May 20, 1900 (or May 21 depending on which journal entry you refer to), Aguinaldo’s group was on the run and had encountered American troops. Some soldiers belonging to the Sixth Company (specifically Lieut. Lucio Valentin), of which Juan was part of, went missing. It is unsure if Juan also went missing during this time.

Villa: The soldiers on the first and second companies of the Bulacan Battalion looked after the safety of the honorable president, and by their bravery prevented the enemy’s advance until he got away. In this fight our casualties were: Second Lieutenant Morales killed, two soldiers wounded, and Lieut. Lucio Valentin of the sixth company and some soldiers of the same missing.

Carrasco (May 21, 1900 in his entry): At around eleven a.m. we moved to the rancheria of Asibanlang, leaving in Sanga an advance guard under the command of Lieutenant Lucio Valentin. At around six p.m. we heard that the enemy was in sight. [...]

Soon after, the firing began where the advance guard of Lieutenant Valentin was; and moments later the firing started in our own line, commanded by Commandant Geronimo Gatmaitan. When the foe saw that all of us on horses were escorting His Excellency the President, they concentrated their fire on us, for which reason the President bade us leave the scene.

On May 22, 1900, Villa noted that the soldiers who went missing last May 20th were reunited with Aguinaldo’s group. However, they were confronted by Americans who didn’t immediately fire at them. They escaped to the woods.

About 12:30 o’clock, on reaching a river near a mountain ridge, we observed a number of armed men on the top of the ridge. Viewed through the glasses they appeared to be wearing black shirts, but when we saw them deploy as skirmishers in our direction we were quite convinced they were our enemies. So we had to come back and abandon our trip to Magapasi. We then turned off to the left to ascend a mountain ridge which we saw, having left the Fifth and Sixth companies to protect the retreat of our honorable president, who before his leaving placed the soldiers in good strategical positions. The honorable president also gave instructions to the captains of the said companies relative to the direction in which they should retreat in order to find him.

After marching for an hour we saw one of our soldiers following us, and calling to us. Then we waited for him. When he arrived he told the honorable president that the soldiers we had seen deploying as skirmishers on the mountain ridge were our soldiers of the First Bulacan Battalion who had separated from us on the night of the 20th. We returned at once. Great was our pleasure on meeting our soldier companion of the rocks. After chatting for an hour we resumed our former direction toward Magapasi. This was 2 p.m.

On the Americans ambushing them:

The honorable president did not know what to do, because in front of us were the 300 Americans at Tabog, forming a cordon; on our left 300 more Americans from Tuao, who were also in cordon, and to our right and rear were the 4,000 (sic) who were pursuing us and who had corralled us among the mountain ridges. How were we to save ourselves? While we were going back along the road we had come, the honorable President, Señors Villa, Barcelona and Pilar were engaging in a discussion as to what direction we should take, and whether we should be able to get through the hostile military lines. Each one was meditating on what should be best. Finally, as there was no time for so much discussion, the honorable president said that it would be best for us to simply hide in the thick woods in those places, and that from then on we would travel no more by day, but only by night, so as to avoid being discovered by the Americans.

The next entry from Villa that explicitly mentions Juan was on July 6, 1900. Juan was part of the council of a trial for a deserter. The deserter was given a death penalty.

There came up a trial in the camp this morning the case of Junior Maj. Geronimo Gatmaitan, a deserter from the escort of the honorable president. [...] In view of these grave offenses the honorable president this morning ordered all the field and line officers in camp to form a council to deliberate as to what penalty ought to be inflicted upon the said major. The council was composed of Maj. Raymundo C. Jeciel, Capts. Juan H. del Pilar and Ildelfonso Villareal, and First Lieut. Tomas Magsarile and Teodoro Dayao, Señor Simeon A. Villa presiding. The unanimously agreed that the penalty should be death.

By late August 1900, a major responsibility was given to Juan. Aguinaldo appointed Juan as military commander/chief of guerrilla of Isabela. Carrasco was put under Juan’s orders. And after two months of spending time in the Tierra Virgen camp, it was decided that Juan and other soldiers would not go with Aguinaldo and operate as a guerrilla unit. Here are the following entries supporting his appointment and the change to guerrilla tactics:

August 20, 1900 (A letter from Emilio Aguinaldo, addressed to the commander of forces coming from llocos): On arriving with your forces in these provinces, you may commence operations by guerrillas in any part of this valley with authority to attack and surprise the enemy without waiting for superior orders, establishing your temporary camps wherever military strategy demands. I inform you that the following are chiefs of guerrillas: of the province of Nueva Vizcaya, Captain Joaquin Velasquez; of Isabela, Captain Juan H. del Pilar; and of Cagayan, Major Carlos Ronquillo, each one of whom has the same authority as that which I now confer upon you, without detriment to the preservation of military discipline between you conformably to orders and good harmony as true brothers and defenders of a common cause, and in case of attack acting in combination, should circumstances require it.

August 20, 1900 (Villa): A report was received from Gamu informing us of the arrival of many Americans at Aparri, and the 8 very large rowboats were en route to this section.

The honorable president, wishing to avoid the attack of the Americans, decided that we should leave here and take the direction for Palanan, carrying only 16 guns, the others to remain in charge of Captains Pilar and Villareal, who stayed behind to engage in a system of guerrilla warfare in this province.

August 21, 1900 (Carrasco): A letter I received from Captain Juan H. del Pilar at seven in the morning declared that he was on his way to the Third Camp on orders of the President. When he arrived there, I presented myself to the President, with whom I had been in conference, and he told me, among other things, that I was to put myself at the orders of Captain del Pilar, who had been told to be at the service of some guerrilla force.

Afterwards we spent a good time jesting with our colleagues in camp; and then I retired, to await the orders to march.

August 25, 1900 (A letter from Emilio Aguinaldo, addressed to the principal chiefs of the Katipunan who command forces in Isabela): Señor Juan H. del Pilar has been appointed the military commander of the province; you as military commander of your pueblo will place yourself under his orders.

August 27, 1900 (Villa): Everything being conveniently prepared, in order to cause a failure of the Americans’ plan to attack, we at 5:30 a.m., abandoned this camp of “Tierra Virgen,” after having lived there peacefully for two months and twenty-one days. Capt. Juan H. del Pilar, chief, and Señors Villareal, Carrasco, Catindig, Subido, Ruis de Leon, and the greater part of the soldiers remained behind in the province to operate as guerrillas.

Despite the news and shift to guerrilla tactics, the following entries from Carrasco show how he and the other soldiers spent nights chatting and jesting in Juan’s quarters before leaving Tierra Virgen.

August 23, 1900: In the afternoon I marched with the company of Lieutenant de Leon to the Third Camp, where I had been summoned. On arriving there, I found all chiefs and officials assembled in conference, which I joined. Afterwards we set to composing a circular, which was the purpose of the conference. We spent the night chatting and jesting in the quarters of Señor Juan H. del Pilar, where also lodge democratically the Messrs. Magsarili, Perfecto, Villareal and Subido. There we stayed to sleep.

August 24, 1900: I have spent the day writing circulars, finishing at six in the evening. Like the night before, we spent this night in the said house and again we had a session of jokes and politics.

From August 28 to September 16, 1900, Juan and his group moved out from Tierra Virgen and carried out operations as a guerrilla unit. Carrasco, for the most part, was ill.

August 28, 1900: On this day we transferred location, establishing a new camp in the same forest but in a more hidden site, where we have spent two nights.

September 5, 1900: On the 28th of last month, Captain Pilar, Captain Villareal, myself and some other officers, along with 56 soldiers, departed from Tierra Virgen to render service as a guerrilla unit. We fixed our area within the boundaries of the town of Echague and from that point we have delivered correspondence to the principal chiefs of the towns of this province, a service of great importance.

September 13, 1900: In the afternoon Captain del Pilar, Lieutenant Luna and myself went to the barrio of Minal-lo for a change of air and to deliver mail for Naguilian. We returned to camp at two o’clock a.m. completely soaked, having been caught by a storm along the way.

September 16, 1900: At sunrise, after breakfast, we resumed the march on foot, because the road is very bad and we cannot bring horses. We had been marching an hour when I was again attacked by fever. Nevertheless I plodded on until we reached a brook where I got my legs wet. Whereupon the confounded fever attacked me so fiercely I could no longer move a step and had to lie down on the ground. On seeing this, Commandant del Pilar ordered me to return to Minaban, since because of me the column could not move ahead. With God’s help, and clinging to the shoulder of my assistant, I hobbled back to Minaban, arriving there at six in the evening.

On September 17, 1900, a still unwell Carrasco learned of what happened during the attack and the subsequent death of Juan. An American war report confirms Juan’s death although listed under a different date.

Carrasco’s entry: The column came from Malumi at around eleven in the morning and from my companions I learned how badly the soldiers had behaved. They refused to attack as we had planned, although the detachment was manned by only twelve Americans, as the soldiers knew. In the combat, we suffered the loss of Commandant del Pilar, who was captured by the enemy. We marched back to camp, where I continued to be with fever.

September 14, 1900 (American war report entry): Corporal Martin, with a detachment of Company H, Sixteenth Infantry, encountered a band of guerrillas under Captain Juan del Pilar, on Palanan road; routed them, killing their captain, wounded 3, captured 1 rifle, 1 revolver, 175 pesos, and important papers. No casualties.

And there you have it. Captain Juan H. del Pilar died at the hands of the Americans and had suffered a similar fate to his famous relative. There is also no info on whether or not his body was recovered. If not, then his remains might still be somewhere in Isabela.

Whether Juan del Pilar is the uncle or cousin, this shows Goyo’s relative had the same level of grit and resilience as him. Although, I still think this Captain del Pilar is a cousin based on age (because Tio Juan would’ve been 50+ years old by 1900).

Desde su púlpito de pastor de La Luz del Mundo, Héctor Vera animó a sus fieles durante 18 años a donar cada día, dólar a dólar, ofrenda tras ofrenda. El dinero de las ofrendas llegaba en sobres marcados “para el siervo de Dios” que él mismo transportó a México, como explica en conversación con Noticias Telemundo Investiga.

A los feligreses no les importaba quitarles el pan a sus hijos para dárselo a la iglesia. “Los más sencillos son los que más dan”, asevera el expastor.

— ¿Cómo de grande es tu amor por el siervo de Dios? —les preguntaba.

— Lo máximo —respondían los feligreses.

— Entonces, tienes que colaborar. Más bienaventurado es dar que recibir.

Héctor Vera es el primer exmiembro de la Iglesia de su rango que accede a una entrevista.

Es mexicano, tiene 58 años y ha pasado la mitad de su vida en La Luz del Mundo. Trabajó en México y Estados Unidos comprando casas, vendiendo dulces y pidiendo ofrendas; cualquier cosa que contribuyera a engrandecer el patrimonio de la Iglesia.

Lo casaron “con una muchacha muy bonita” como premio a su esfuerzo, dice. “Yo no sabía lo que estaba pasando. Después, me di cuenta. Es un negocio redondo”, afirma. Según su relato, la fe de los feligreses mueve montañas de dinero: “Es una fe ciega completamente. Yo los alcanzo a entender, pero llega el tiempo en que te dices que esto no está bien. Ahorita los únicos que ganan son los Joaquines”, en referencia a la familia que dirige la Iglesia desde su fundación, a principios del siglo XX.

Jet privado, templos como palacios y una “familia real”

“Es que es la familia real, tenemos que esforzarnos para darles lo mejor”, recuerda que le decían a Jemima Vera, una de las hijas de Héctor, también exmiembro de La Luz del Mundo desde noviembre de 2018.

Esta iglesia fundamentalista cristiana fue fundada en 1926 en Guadalajara, México, por un militar que combatió en la revolución mexicana, Eusebio Joaquín González, autoproclamado “Apóstol Aarón”. González dijo haber recibido una visión divina en la que Dios lo llamó para hacer revivir la iglesia al estilo de los primeros cristianos.

Los fieles visten de manera conservadora y recatada. Los hombres llevan el cabello corto y las mujeres portan un velo sobre sus cabezas. Según sus cálculos, tienen 5 millones de fieles repartidos en 60 países. Su presencia es más numerosa, en este orden, en México, Estados Unidos, El Salvador, Colombia, Costa Rica y Honduras.

La Luz del Mundo ha construido templos fastuosos como los de Guadalajara y Tapachula, en México, organiza actos a la altura de grandes súper producciones audiovisuales, tiene una agencia de comunicación y canales de Youtube, radio y televisión.

La cabeza de la Iglesia es Naasón Joaquín García, heredero de los títulos de “Apóstol de Cristo en la tierra” y “siervo de Dios” de su padre, Samuel Joaquín. Desde junio de 2019, Naasón enfrenta 26 cargos penales por trata y abusos sexuales en la Corte Superior de Los Ángeles, California.

Durante la audiencia del 21 de junio de 2019, la fiscalía pidió que se elevara su fianza de 25 a 50 millones de dólares argumentando que la fortuna personal de Naasón Joaquín y las contribuciones de los miembros de su iglesia le permitirían pagarla. Según la vicefiscal estatal, Amanda Plisner, “el acusado recientemente gastó 100,000 dólares en un solo día comprando en una tienda de Beverly Hills”. Plisner también advirtió al tribunal del riesgo de fuga: “Viaja muy seguido en jet privado”

En una entrevista con Noticias Telemundo Investiga, el vocero de La Luz del Mundo, Silem García Peña, no se pronunció sobre la procedencia del patrimonio de la familia Joaquín: “Ellos tienen sus propios ingresos. De su familia yo no puedo hablar. Ignoro los ingresos que ellos perciben, son de carácter personal”.

Citas de la Biblia que recaudan miles de dólares

Héctor Vera fue pastor con Samuel y con Naasón. Se retiró en 2003, cansado de pedir: “Yo ya no los forzaba porque era un descaro. Ofrenda y ofrenda y ofrenda. Se lava el cerebro. 19 y diré a mi alma: Alma, muchos bienes tienes guardados para muchos años; repósate, come, bebe, regocíjate.

Con ayuda de cinco ex miembros de La Luz del Mundo entrevistados individualmente se ha calculado cuánto puede llegar a aportar cada año un feligrés que viva en Estados Unidos y gane 1,200 dólares quincenales.

Los miembros asisten diariamente a la iglesia y dejan al menos un dólar = 365 dólares anuales.

El diezmo, es decir, el 10% de su salario = 2,880 dólares cada año.

El cumpleaños del Apóstol, Naasón Joaquín = unos 1,000 dólares.

La Santa Cena, la celebración más importante del año = unos 1,000 dólares.

Hay otras ofrendas menores a lo largo del año, como el cumpleaños de la esposa del líder, la construcción de nuevos templos o las misiones internacionales. Esto puede llegar a sumar 800 dólares anuales más.

En total, una donación de unos 5,600 dólares cada año.

Pero otros aportan más. Jemima recuerda que consiguió reunir 5,000 dólares destinados a una sola ofrenda con el propósito de “agradar al siervo de Dios”.

Para la Santa Cena (febrero) y el cumpleaños del Apóstol (7 de mayo), algunos fieles ahorran durante todo el año o venden algunas de sus pertenencias. Quien no tenía apenas nada, aportaba las estampillas para comprar comida que otorga como ayuda el gobierno de Estados Unidos. “Si yo doy, Dios me va a bendecir” es la creencia común, relatan los cinco entrevistados.

Las ofrendas son voluntarias. Con el diezmo, no se podía fallar, recuerda Jemima: “El diezmo es muy importante para nuestra salvación. Lo daba con todo mi corazón. Yo creía que si no daba mi diezmo me iba a ir mal en mi matrimonio. Inclusive había listas, que ponían ahí para que vieran quién daba su diezmo y quién no”

¿Adónde va todo el dinero?

Rastrear las propiedades y el dinero de “la familia real”, como llaman los miembros de la Iglesia a su apóstol Naasón Joaquín, sus hermanos, hijos y sobrinos no es fácil porque “ellos utilizan prestanombres para no dejar huella legal de sus riquezas”, asegura un exmiembro que perteneció al comité de finanzas de su iglesia local y trabajó para Berea Internacional, el medio oficial de La Luz del Mundo.

Una de las pocas propiedades a nombre de la familia Joaquín es el Silver Wolf Ranch, situado a un lado de la carretera interestatal 10 en Seguin, Texas, y fue adquirido por Samuel Joaquín Flores, padre de Naasón, a finales de los años 90. Héctor Vera recuerda que en ese tiempo era diácono de la iglesia en Bowling Green, Kentucky y su supervisor, el pastor jurisdiccional, le exigía que pidiera ofrendas especiales en sus servicios diarios, de forma más continua, para poder pagar el rancho.

“Yo inclusive estuve mandando hermanos a trabajar al rancho de Texas, no se les pagaba, no se les ayudaba”, recuerda Vera.

Actualmente el rancho está a nombre de Benjamín Joaquín, hermano mayor de Naasón, y está compuesto por cinco terrenos cuyo valor actual suman un poco más de 4 millones de dólares, según registros públicos del condado de Guadalupe en Texas. La propiedad cuenta con un santuario de animales, y se utiliza principalmente para reuniones privadas de la familia con miembros de alto nivel de La Luz del Mundo.

Sochil Martin fue asistente de Naasón Joaquín y la primera mujer que le denunció por abusos sexuales. Además de relatar su historia en público por primera vez, hoy habló también de los enormes recursos de la Iglesia y de las “coacciones” a los fieles para donar: “Creen que va a ser usado para el trabajo de Dios en la tierra, pero todo el dinero ganado con su arduo esfuerzo es para hacer a Naasón y a sus facilitadores más ricos”

El vocero, García Peña asegura que la Iglesia no tiene fines de lucro: “Aquí no se busca enriquecer absolutamente a nadie. Se trata de desarrollar los proyectos que la Iglesia tiene”.

Uno de esos proyectos es construir “La ciudad de La Luz del Mundo” en Flowery Branch, Georgia. Son nueve terrenos que la Luz del Mundo adquirió por 10.5 millones de dólares.

Según los registros públicos del condado Hall, esta adquisición fue realizada en 2017 por LDM Central USA Evangelical Ministries, el nombre jurídico de La Luz del Mundo en Houston, Texas. “

Al consultar con la ciudad de Flowery Branch sobre este proyecto, la portavoz del municipio, Melissa McCain respondió en un correo electrónico: “La ciudad aún no ha revisado ni aprobado ningún plan de construcción de La Ciudad Luz del Mundo porque no hemos recibido ninguna propuesta oficial de dicho proyecto, por lo tanto, hasta el momento no hay nada que considerar”.

La Luz del Mundo dice estar esperando los permisos correspondientes para iniciar el proyecto, “estamos ajustándonos a los tiempos que las propias autoridades tanto municipales como estatales están estableciendo, y se está respetando ello”, aseguró García Peña.

Sobres de dinero marcados “para el siervo de Dios”

Cada iglesia de La Luz del Mundo cuenta con una comisión de finanzas que recauda el dinero de los diezmos y las ofrendas y los administra para la adquisición de un terreno o la construcción de un templo. Una parte de estas donaciones llega en sobres donde se especifica “para el siervo de Dios”, cuenta Vera. Según su relato, por orden del pastor jurisdiccional de cada área geográfica, esos sobres eran destruidos y el dinero que contenían era enviado a Guadalajara sin pasar por aduanas o el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS, en inglés).

“Los diezmos van directos para Naasón, y son bastantes iglesias, un dineral tremendo. De San Antonio yo llevé 70,000 dólares solo de mi iglesia, de unos mil miembros”. La ley no permite que una persona transporte en avión más de 10,000 dólares, así que Vera repartió el dinero entre varios hermanos. Al llegar a Guadalajara, se lo dieron y él lo entregó en la Casa Jericó, donde vivía Samuel Joaquín: “Yo tenía tanta confianza que a cualquier muchacho o secretaria que estaba ahí y les pedía que lo entregaran”.

Jemima también lo vivió de cerca: “A mi esposo le confiaban grandes cantidades de dinero que él llevaba escondido entre las maletas para Guadalajara”.

Dos exmiembros de La Luz del Mundo que pertenecieron a los comités de finanzas de dos ciudades distintas en Estados Unidos, cercanos a la cúpula de la Iglesia, coinciden con el relato del expastor y su hija. Bajo condición de anonimato para proteger su identidad, han descrito el procedimiento a Noticias Telemundo Investiga:

El dinero en efectivo que se recoge en cada iglesia se reúne en Houston y en Los Ángeles y después se traslada a Guadalajara, México en pequeñas cantidades, repartidas entre varias personas. “Son multimillonarios”, sentencia Vera.

“Es un joven arquitecto que hace parte de la élite de Guadalajara. Mantiene relaciones de alto nivel y es una de las personas indicadas en la familia para poder hacer negocios y mover el dinero sin caer en señalamientos porque se mantiene al margen de las actividades de la iglesia”, comentó una fuente que no quiere ser identificada. Sólo nos permite decir que es un miembro activo de La Luz del Mundo, cercano a la familia Joaquín.

Una de las compañías de Adoniram Joaquín, Aboganem Matinez S.A de CV firmó en 2017 un contrato con la firma Hotel Histórico IG S.A de CV para arrendar dos pisos de locales comerciales en el Rock Mall de Guadalajara por 50 mil dólares mensuales. “El propósito del negocio era subarrendar estos locales a distintos restaurantes”, según la misma fuente de la que Noticias Telemundo Investiga obtuvo el contrato. Este proyecto forma parte del complejo del hotel Hard Rock de Guadalajara.

La vida de lujo de la familia del apóstol enorgullecía a Jemima: “Pensaba que el siervo de Dios era alguien exclusivo. Dábamos gloria a Dios por su vida y los lujos que tenía. Bendito el siervo de Dios que todo lo tiene porque todo lo merece”.

Su padre, el expastor Héctor Vera, resume su experiencia de dos décadas trabajando para La Luz del Mundo con palabras de otro apóstol: Guardaos de los falsos profetas que vienen a vosotros con vestidos de ovejas pero por dentro son lobos rapaces. Mateo, 7:15.

Entre la evidencia está un mensaje de texto en el que el llamado ‘Apóstol de Jesucristo’ discute “usar ‘Ruffys’ para drogar a las víctimas para que ellas no recuerden lo que les pasó”, advierten los fiscales en una moción que Univision Noticias obtuvo a través del secretario de la Corte Superior de Los Ángeles.

En estos tiempos en que la gente se está acostumbrando a convivir en espacios reducidos debido a la sobrepoblación de las grandes urbes, se han dejado de ofrecer vehículos de grandes dimensiones. Ford omitió esa tendencia y se dedicó a realizar un vehículo que, además de sus sobresalientes prestaciones mecánicas, nos ofrece un enorme espacio interior, confort inigualable y la sensación de imponerse ante cualquier camino. Estamos hablando de la Ford F-150 Raptor.

Esta pickup que Ford Performance desarrolló con el objetivo de ofrecer un vehículo con capacidades de las camionetas todo terreno tipo “Baja” (llamadas “Trophy Trucks”) incorporando un equipamiento de lujo que la marca del óvalo azul puede ofrecernos. Siendo la versión que probamos la segunda generación de la Raptor, se pueden notar varios cambios.

Comenzando con el motor, esta Raptor ya no cuenta con el motor V8 de 6.2L que vimos en la primera generación. Ahora incorpora un motor EcoBoost V6 de 3.5L biturbo modificado por Ford Performance, proporcionando 450 HP y 510 lb pie de torque, está acoplado a una transmisión automática Select Shift de 10 velocidades con opción de cambios secuenciales a través de las paletas de cambios que están detrás del volante o con los botones localizados en la palanca de velocidades (por si necesitas un toque de caché).

El tren motriz es otro factor que nos gusta de la Raptor, con un diferencial frontal Torsen, la Ford Raptor nos permite seleccionar varios tipos de tracción, comenzando por las ruedas traseras (2H), tracción total en las 4 ruedas en alta y baja velocidad (4H / 4L) con la opción del bloqueo de diferencial para obtener mayor tracción en terrenos con menor agarre y la alternativa de tener tracción integral en las 4 ruedas (4A) donde permitirá distribuir la potencia entre las ruedas delanteras y traseras según sea necesario.

Lo que va a hacer que la Ford Raptor sea un vehículo capaz de transitar ante cualquier terreno, además de las enormes llantas BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A con medida 315/70/R17, es su suspensión, teniendo una configuración independiente de doble horquilla con muelle helicoidal y brazo de control inferior de aluminio fundido al frente, mientras que atrás, como buena pickup, tiene una configuración de muelles y eje sólido.

Los amortiguadores FOX Racing Shox™ de alta potencia presurizados que darán el confort o el alto desempeño son los que soportarán el castigo de las irregularidades del camino, siendo estos amortiguadores uno de los componentes más sobresalientes porque fueron diseñados especialmente para esta pickup. Con esta configuración, la Ford Raptor tiene una distancia al piso de 30 centímetros que es suficiente para superar la mayoría de los obstáculos.

El diseño exterior denota mucha robustez, comenzando por su parrilla octogonal en color gris con las letras “FORD” resaltadas tridimensionalmente, esta parrilla albergará la cámara frontal y unas luces indicadoras para darnos cuenta de la altura que se encuentra el cofre. Sus faros con tecnología LED con encendido y ajuste de iluminación automático, cuenta con luces diurnas para hacerse notar mientras uno va conduciendo. Otro detalle de esa robustez, es la defensa con corte angular y aberturas en los extremos para poder admirar la obra de arte que es la suspensión frontal. Esta defensa también contará con una placa debajo de ella para proteger el motor y para remolcar sobrealen dos enormes ganchos para arrastre.

A los costados podremos notar los rines de aleación de 17 pulgadas con las llantas All Terrain, debido a la altura, contaremos con los estribos reforzados para poder ayudarnos a subir a la cabina, estos estribos, además de tener grabado el emblema de “Raptor”, están diseñados para poder resistir impactos principalmente cuando estamos en terracería. Las salpicaderas, debido a sus dimensiones, se vuelve una de las partes más anchas de la camioneta sin contar los espejos, debido a esto, poder encontrar un cajón de estacionamiento suficientemente amplio de vuelve todo un reto. Para darle mayor presencia, en las salpicaderas traseras tendremos el vinil con la leyenda “Raptor” por si aún tienen duda de que vehículo se trata. Debido a las enormes dimensiones, en las esquinas de la Raptor tendremos luces indicadoras ¡Como si fuese un trailer!

La parte de atrás tendremos las luces traseras de LED con la forma en “c” para darle ese aspecto moderno además de funcional, también tiene integrado los sensores de proximidad para que sea fácil su maniobra ante obstáculos. La batea (o área de carga) va a contar con un recubrimiento que impedirá que se dañe esa parte de la carrocería si decides utilizarla para cargar cosas pesadas.

En la puerta de acceso al área de carga, tendremos la moldura con los emblemas Lobo y Raptor además de las letras “FORD” como en la parte de enfrente incluyendo también la cámara de reversa en ella. Al igual que en el frente tendremos ganchos de arrastre y la conexión para remolque. La Ford Raptor contará con dos salidas de escape con puntas en un color negro que cumplen su función de hacer sonar el motor 3.5L EcoBoost.

La primera impresión al subir al interior de la Ford Raptor es su inmenso espacio (es más grande que un “departamento” en la condesa y con mejor precio), lo primero que vamos a notar (si es que está descubierto) es el techo panorámico para las dos filas de asientos con función de quemacocos eléctrico (sólo al frente) Vista Roof. Regresando al espacio interior, podemos transportar a 5 adultos de complexión grande sin ningún problema. Dentro de la seguridad den la cabina, tenemos las 6 bolsas de aire tradicionales (2 frontales, 2 laterales, 2 tipo cortina) también tendremos bolsas de aire para las rodillas y los cinturones de seguridad inflables para los pasajeros de atrás.

Todos los asientos están tapizados en piel en color negro, los delanteros, que son de tipo capitán (para ir a tus anchas como un sillón reposet) tienen ajuste eléctrico y memoria de posición para el conductor, también tienen calefacción y ventilación para hacer más placentero el viaje. Adornando estos asientos, en el respaldo tienen el logo de “Raptor” bordado para una vez más hacer mención al vehículo que estamos manejando. Los asientos traseros tipo banca, permiten abatirse de la parte de abajo para agregar más espacio interior para carga y también para tener acceso a las herramientas.

El volante también te hace recordar de las dimensiones de la Ford Raptor porque también es muy grande (tanto que parece un timón), está forrado en piel tiene una marca en color rojo en la parte central superior (como en los autos de carreras) para recordarte la posición que se encuentra. Este volante, además de tener calefacción, tiene controles para el sistema de infoentretenimiento, la computadora de viaje (que se reproduce en una pantalla de 8 pulgadas incrustada en el panel de instrumentos) y los modos de conducción incluyendo la dirección para el comportamiento de la Ford Raptor.

Pasando al tablero de la Raptor, al centro de esta encontraremos la pantalla touch de 8 pulgadas con el sistema Sync 3 que nos permitirá conectar nuestro celular a través del Bluetooth, Auxiliar y USB con la opción de tener el Android Auto o Apple CarPlay además del radio AM/FM. Para complementar el sistema de infoentretenimiento, contamos con un sistema de audio premium B&O de 10 bocinas incluyendo un subwoofer que nos deleitará reproduciendo nuestras canciones con una calidad bastante agradable.

Además de la pantalla touch, en la consola tendremos botones para interactuar con el sistema SYNC 3, los controles del aire acondicionado, un convertidor de corriente de 110 V junto con un cargador “para auto” además de los botones para activar la cámara de 360 grados (sólo cuando la velocidad es baja).

Al centro de los asientos tendremos un compartimiento enorme compartimiento para guardas nuestras cosas, tan grande que yo considero que podría usarse como hielera si no tuviésemos cargadores ni conexiones USB en él. En el techo, además de los controles para el techo panorámico, la Ford Raptor incluye 6 interruptores auxiliares por si necesitas agregarle accesorios electrónicos a tu Raptor y con esto ya no tienes que modificar el interior.

Ya que llegamos al interior de la Raptor podemos empezar con la sensación del manejo (al fin). Al estar en el asiento del conductor y detrás del volante, lo primero que notas son las dimensiones de la Raptor, por increíble que parezca, tiene una muy buena visibilidad gracias a las ventanas de tamaño vitrina y los espejos laterales. La parte más complicada será medir el frente en el lado del copiloto y la parte de atrás porque, aunque ves perfectamente la caja, por lo alto, no puedes ver lo que esté detrás, pero eso se soluciona activando la cámara de 360 grados que es una gran ayuda sobre todo en maniobras difíciles como salir de un estacionamiento pequeño (se los digo por experiencia).

La emoción de oprimir el botón de Start y escuchar ese primer rugido de la Raptor te saca una sonrisa de inmediato, ves en las pantallas el logo de Raptor y “Built tought” y te das cuenta de que acabas de despertar al monstruo. Pones Drive y es momento abrirse camino. La primera sensación es el poder que tienes en tus manos, porque con sólo pisar el acelerador, la Raptor pasa de ser un vehículo grande y pesado, a un vehículo grande y veloz, su aceleración es sobresaliente gracias a su motor Biturbo, algo que puedes notar es como titubea unos instantes la transmisión para seleccionar la velocidad apropiada y el control de tracción conteniendo todo el torque que reciben las ruedas.

Obviamente para detener toda esta “mole”, cuenta con frenos de disco ventilados en las cuatro ruedas con ABS y Distribución Electrónica de la Fuerza de Frenado (EBD). La dirección es bastante suave para el tonelaje de esta pickup gracias a sus 3 modos: NORMAL, COMFORT y SPORT, siendo esta última la que ofrece mayor precisión al conducir. Además de los ajustes del volante, podemos nosotros elegir varios modos de manejo para la Ford Raptor:

NORMAL – Trabaja con la tracción 2H y una suspensión suave, la respuesta del motor y transmisión se enfoca más para el confort.

SPORT – Puede usarse con la tracción 2H o 4H, mejora sensibilidad del acelerador y la respuesta del motor, la suspensión se vuelve más firme y la transmisión realiza cambios más largos.

ARENA/NIEVE – Activa la tracción 4H, bloquea el diferencial, desactiva el control y se ablanda la dirección.

BAJA – Activa la tracción 4H, el diferencial no está bloqueado, la respuesta del motor es instantánea y el volante está en modo normal.

ROCAS – Activa la tracción 4L, se bloquea el diferencial y la dirección está en modo confort.

RESBALADIZO – Activa la tracción 4A, se reduce notablemente la respuesta del acelerador y el motor para no perder tracción.

REMOLQUE – Activa las asistencias para remolcar.

Manejando la Ford Raptor te hace sentir como cuando Godzilla llega a la ciudad. Comenzando por la altura, verás a la mayoría de los coches por debajo del cofre, por lo que deberás ser cuidadoso ya que se hace un punto ciego que se encuentra en el lado del pasajero. Con un ancho de 2.2 m por las salpicaderas y 2.4m con los espejos, aprenderás a manejar de una manera más precisa debido a que las dimensiones de los carriles, ya no están consideradas para vehículos como este (Viaducto, Reforma, Rio San Joaquín aquí en la Gran Tenoch).

Obviamente es de esperarse que encontrar un lugar de estacionamiento en la calle también será toda una travesía, con una longitud total de 5.9 m de largo tendrás que considerar tal vez hasta ocupar dos lugares (principalmente cuando son lugares con parquímetro) y en las plazas será muy gracioso poder notar la Raptor desde lo lejos pero no te librarás de las maniobras que tendrás que hacer para poder entrar a esos espacios. Pero no todo es sufrimiento manejando la Raptor en la ciudad, ya que es un vehículo grande, cuenta con varias asistencias que te facilitarán su manejo, comenzando con el Sistema Precolisión con Freno de emergencia Automático que, en caso de no ver algún obstáculo, la Raptor se detendrá por arte de sus sensores localizados al frente. Para las maniobras tendremos la opción de activar las cámaras de 360° con la opción de tener varios ángulos y así poder saber lo que está a tu alrededor.

Llevando la Ford Raptor a un hábitat más natural como la terracería, podemos ver el desempeño que nos ofrece este vehículo con prestaciones todo terreno. Comenzando por sus ángulos de ataque de salida de 30.2° y 23.1° no habrá muchos obstáculos que le impidan el paso a esta pickup (además de sus grandes llantas y el sistema 4×4). Percatamos de lo bien diseñada que está la suspensión, comenzando con lo confortante que puede ser en caminos irregularidades. Algo que debemos mencionar, es el recorrido la suspensión, porque al ir pasando por algunos montículos podíamos ver como de un lado terminaba una llanta “volando” mientras que del otro se encontraba totalmente pegada a la carrocería sin notar alguna queja de que estuviésemos excediendo los límites de la suspensión. Teniendo toda la situación monitoreada gracias a los indicadores del tablero y la cámara frontal que se activa cuando elegimos un modo 4×4, podemos conducir la Raptor de manera segura.

Ya que mencionamos las prestaciones de la Ford Raptor, pasemos a los detalles de consumo. Como podemos imaginar, esta gran pickup necesita ser alimentada… ¡y bien! Para ello, tenemos un tanque de combustible de ¡136 L! (casi 3 veces más que el de un auto subcompacto), con el tanque lleno, la computadora de viaje nos indica una autonomía arriba de los 720 km, me imagino que con estos datos ya hicieron los cálculos para obtener los kilómetros por litro que daría la Raptor. Ya siendo más realistas y considerando que nuestra prueba fue más tiempo estando en la ciudad, el consumo que nos dio fue de 4.5km/l en promedio, que es una cifra aceptable debido a que tenemos 450 HP que alimentar y más de 2.5 Toneladas por mover.

A pesar de las cifras que mencionamos, la Raptor hace su mejor esfuerzo para mejorar el consumo de combustible ya que cuenta con el sistema Start/Stop para apagar el motor cuando uno está detenido, además cuando manejas en modo NORMAL los cambios los hace a la mínima de revoluciones para no hacer trabajar tanto al motor. Un consejo que puedes considerar también para la mejora del rendimiento de combustible es usar el modo RESBALADIZO que reduce un poco más la respuesta del motor. Estimando con estos cuidados, la Raptor podría tener un rendimiento arriba de 6km/l.

Toda esta diversión, lujo, desempeño y tecnología tiene un precio, la Ford Raptor 2019 doble cabina que tuvimos a prueba tiene un costo de $1,402,200, que a nuestro punto de vista es un precio justo ya que Ford nos ofrece un vehículo de alto desempeño, equipamiento, nuevas asistencias para la conducción, seguridad y sobre todo comodidad. Para considerar tener una Raptor debes tener en mente que su tamaño será un poco problemático debido a que la ciudad no tiene contemplado estas proporciones bíblicas. El consumo de combustible será el precio que tendrás que pagar por una diversión garantizada al llevar este juguete a todas partes y como niño chiquito querrás jugar todo el tiempo con ella en la tierra. Sin duda esta camioneta me representa.

Mis fragmentos favoritos de las canciones del 2019

Este año me propuse escribir no una lista de mis diez discos favoritos del año, ni siquiera de las diez canciones que más escuché, sino de mis versos favoritos en ellas: fragmentos, pues, de canciones a los que volví más de una vez en este año. A veces por las imágenes que crean (una calle en llamas, la luz que se cuela a través de una ventana), por lo que evocan (retazos de infancia o adolescencia) o simplemente por lo que cuentan (una mujer le dice a su pareja que no sabe cómo seguir amándolo ahora que lo conoce tan bien, un hijo le dice a su madre que al fin entiende todos los sacrificios que hizo).

En casi todas las reseñas del octavo álbum de los de Ohio se mencionaba que por fin pasaban del monólogo Besser-Berringer a una conversación, algo que se reforzó en los videos dirigidos por Mike Mills –autor del cortometraje que acompaña al disco– con la presencia de Gail Ann Dorsey, Mina Tindle, Lisa Hannigan y compañía, así como las coreografías de Sharon Eyal.

Haberlos visto el pasado octubre en el Pepsi Center fue de lo mejor que me pasó en el año: la tercera vez que los veía en vivo y, sobre todo, el aniversario simbólico con T.

En el fondo, cuenta Sharon, es una canción sobre Nueva York y los cambios: los vecindarios, las calles, los lugares donde solía pasar el rato ahora cerrados, y jóvenes, nuevos jóvenes, volviendo a hacer lo mismo en las mismas calles, afrontando las tribulaciones de la vida con tan sólo diecisiete años con nuestra propia sombra al doblar la esquina.

Una canción (que en realidad es de 2018) sobre volver a casa y dejar atrás la burbuja que suponen las giras; la antítesis de la respuesta de Dylan cuándo le preguntaban, a propósito del Never Ending Tour, si extrañaba su hogar: “¿casa? ¿qué hay en casa?”. El guiño de las voces de los hijos de Marcus y Carey Mulligan al fondo de la canción acentúa el mensaje en el cierre del disco.

7. “Bright Horses” - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Ghosteen, el cierre de la trilogía que inició con Push The Sky Away y continuó con Skeleton Tree, es un disco bellísimo del que Alexis Petridis escribió que quizás se trate del conjunto de canciones más honestas y bellas que junto a The Bad Seeds haya grabado; canciones que reflejan un catálogo de emociones más cercanas a la ligereza, la tranquilidad, la empatía y la fe. En el espectacular texto de Fernando Navarro sobre el disco, apunta: “Ghosteen no es un álbum más, ni siquiera un gran álbum. Ghosteen es un pozo: si te sumerges, caes hacia un territorio extremadamente sensible y doloroso. Un lugar extraño e irreal, al que siempre apela el mejor arte.” En él también relata la conmovedora respuesta que el autor australiano tuvo para una fan que le preguntó sobre qué hacer con la ira y el dolor que la inundó tras la muerte de su madre. El texto no tiene desperdicio.

Casi imposible elegir unas cuantas líneas del disco de Kate Tempest (a “Firesmoke”, por ejemplo, la hallo hermosa), pero éstas me enternecen particularmente. The Book of Traps and Lessons resulta, en cualquier caso, un disco más reposado –“más maduro”, dice Tempest en una entrevista–, tal vez a causa de que Rick Rubin pidiera bajar los beats y encaramar al piano que le acompaña.

My Christian Journey

This year (2018) has a been a rollercoaster ride for me; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. There are too many ups and down that, I couldn’t handle it myself (See my other blog: #DepressionAndAnxiety). I came to Church as often as I can praying and pleading for guidance during my hardships. But after going to Church I feel that something is missing, maybe my faith wasn’t strong as it was before or I became a Sunday Christian without even knowing it. So I started to have my spiritual journey.

Last August 2018 I started to attend CCF - Christ’s Commission Fellowship (August 5 to be exact). I’ve been watching their videos for the previous months especially Pastor Bong Saquing since my colleague/friend Paulo recommended it to me and I learned a lot from it and started to become curious what it’s like feels like to attend CCF. It was my first time to attend a non-Catholic Church, not culturally shookt (yes millennial) but I was welcomed with a smile from everyone; the Ushers, Church-goers, Pastor in CCF - Las Piñas was welcoming. Even though I was alone, I feel that the Holy Spirit is guiding me. The experience was intimate; from the praise songs, the discussion about the Series - Legit, everything hit me in the heart. After the service, I wanted to go to the Welcome Center but there’s no one there and out of my shyness, I decided to leave and get my coffee at my favorite Coffee Shop and re-read every Bible verse that was discussed during the service.

2nd Sunday (August 12) I was not able to attend the Service because I woke up in the afternoon (sarap matulog eh). 😅 But I watched the live broadcast of the Sunday Message Service entitled “By His Power Be His Witness”. Pastor Ricky Sarthou and Pastor Nett Gochuico discussed our purpose: Sharing the Gospel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ivAkBh3hGg&t=5s).

3rd Sunday (August 19) I woke up late again but I checked the schedule of CCF - Bay Area and found out that they have a 3 PM service. I was anxious that I will be late because it’s already 2:20 PM and I was still not able to ride a jeep but luckily through God’s will there was no traffic at the expressway. 😁 CCF - Bay Area was a bigger center, the Ushers, Church-goers, Pastor was welcoming. The Usher (I forgot to get her name so I will call her Tita) greeted me and asked if this was my first time to attend the service, I answered no but I cleared that I already attended CCF at LP. The second question that she asked if I wanted to join a D-Group, I answered yes but I cleared that I was not a member yet and I’m still a Catholic; she answered with a smile and said: “It’s okay, everybody’s welcome here”. 😊 The service that I attended was in Filipino-English, but when the worship song was played I was singing along as if I know the lyrics a long time ago. The topic was a replay of last week but I was still amazed by the story of Pastor Nett. When the service ended, Tita ushered me to the Welcome Center and Bro Caesar welcomed me and shared the gospel with the 4 of us (3 are also new to CCF, sorry I forgot their names). 😅 Bro Caesar shared the good side and bad side of the gospel. I was intrigued by his sharing that I immediately searched for it after attending the service. After searching the internet I found a similar article: God is Just (https://www.allaboutgod.com/god-is-just.htm).

4th Sunday (August 26) I attended CCF’s 34th Anniversary at CCF Center, Pasig. Just a background, I was worried if I can attend anniversary at CCF Center because I don’t have extra money left (Yes, #PetsaDePeligro feels) but I remember that I have collected new 5 peso coins in my coin box. After counting all the 5 peso coins, I decided that I will attend the anniversary at CCF Center. I left our house before 12nn because I might encounter traffic heading north. I rode MRT from Taft to Ortigas, luckily my Beep Card still has P75 load so I have extra money for transportation. 😏 After arriving at Ortigas, I checked if I can ride a jeep going to the CCF Center but the route is away so I rode a taxi. The CCF Center was huge and state of the art and a lot of people waiting for the next service. If my memory serves me well, I think I arrived at 1:30 pm so I took a seat near the Welcome Center. After the 12nn service, I entered the auditorium and seated in the center row (3rd row to be exact). The auditorium was huge, I know that it’s huge watching it from live streaming but in person, it’s much larger than expected. Everyone was busy so I decided to take pictures. As usual practice, 30 minutes before the start of service is Prayer Time. The service started with worship and everything was magical, everything was prepared well. The worship was great, all the songs are like arrows strafe into my heart then the message of Pastor Pastor Peter Tan-Chi was heartwarming. He discusses the “Grow in Christlike Compassion” which is rooted in the bible verse Matthew 28:18-20: “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” also known as “The Great Commission”. And Pastor Peter expounded that our mission is to be a Disciple of Jesus that will make Christ-committed followers. What also struck me is the quote of Pastor Peter: “The greatest tragedy is not death but life for a wrong purpose.” When Pastor Peter asked if someone wanted to promise to his life to follow Lord Jesus Christ, I raised my right hand with confidence. And that day I promised to Lord Jesus that I will surrender my life to follow Him just like a broken vessel, once lost but found, once blind but now I see the amazing grace of Jesus Christ for me. After the service, I patiently waited so that I could personally thank Pastor Bong and Pastor Peter about their impact through my Christian Faith, luckily I was able to take a picture with Pastor Bong but not with Pastor Peter because I was shy to take a picture because my turn was already over.

After the service, I went to the Welcome Center and was welcomed by one of the Ushers (sorry I forgot their names) and joined the group of 2 high school boys that are attending CCF - Elevate. He discussed "What is the Best Decision you've made in your life?" and "The 4 Important Truths that we must know". Truth #1 - God loves you and desires that you have eternal life with Him (John 3:16), have an abundant and meaningful life with Him (John 10:10). Truth #2 - Man has a sin problem that separates him from God; everyone has sinned (Romans 3:23) and the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23). He expounded that the Bible talks about Different Kinds of Death; Physical Death (Hebrews 9:27) and Spiritual Death or Eternal Separation from God (Revelation 21:8). He continues with a question “Since sin separates man from God, what is the solution to this problem?”, we answered one by one and he summarised that “We often think that Religion, Good Works, Good Morals are the solution. But there is only one solution from God” which lead to Truth Number 3. Truth #3 - Jesus Christ is God's only way to eternal life. Why? He is the only way (John 14:6), He completely paid the penalty of our sins (1 Peter 3:18), His resurrection proves that He is the Son of God, The Messiah, The Only Living Savior (Romans 1:3-4), He promises eternal life (John 3:36). Truth #4 - We must place our faith in Jesus Christ to save us; we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Based on Ephesian 2:8-9, if salvation can be expressed in a formula: Faith in Jesus + Nothing from us = Salvation. Good works are not the means to salvation, rather they are the evidence of your salvation. We show our faith in Jesus Christ by 1 - Accepting His gift of eternal life. 2 - Turning away from our sins. Surrendering our lives to Him (Romans 6:23, Matthew 16:24). God promised that you can know today that you have eternal life when you trust in Jesus (1 John 5:13). After the discussion he asks us a question “Are you willing to make a decision to trust and follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior” and we responded Yes and prayed in faith. He finally discussed if we have trusted Jesus Christ then the following things have happened to us: Your eternal life with God begins today (John 6:40). All of your sins are paid and forgiven - past, present and future sins (Colossians 1:13-14). You are a new person in God’s eyes, a new life has begun for you (2 Corinthians 5:17). You became a Child of God (John 1:12). And our session was ended with a prayer; I thanked him and my group-mates for the opportunity to share this wonderful experience at the CCF Welcome Center.

As of today, I’m still attending at CCF Bay Area every Sunday and already have my own D-Group with Kuya Glenn, John Rey and hopefully, I can serve through one of its ministry. My life is imperfect and I am not perfect, I still have my struggle until now. But as I grow, in my relationship with Jesus, He gives me the grace to resist and to overcome sin. I know that my discipleship is gonna be a long journey and my transformation is not yet complete but knowing that my entire being is not mine but God’s, my response is to give my all to Him (Yes all, even love life). Galatians 2:20 NIV says “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Hope that somehow you are inspired with my testimony. I am Lucky Salonoy, once lost but now found by Him who redeems, confirms, strengthens, restores and makes things all new. Soli Deo Gloria! ☝🏼
