Third P.O.V [A few months prior]
“I’m sorry, (Y/n).. It was never you.. And I can’t keep this going. I can’t lead you on. You don’t deserve that.” Stiles said, attempting to sound compassionate but ended up sounding like he was pitying her. (Y/n) dared to glare up at the pair of eyes she once adored, a bitter taste forming in her mouth. “You mean I was never Lydia. I was never as pretty, or beautiful, or smart as her. You don’t love her, Stiles. It’s pure infatuation. She never noticed you, nor will she. But fine, leave me for her. Cut the string we had..” She says with as bite as she can muster without breaking out into a sob.
He shook his head, wishing this could be easier. “(Y/n)-” However, she interjected. Tears forming in her ducts. “Did you ever love me?” The questions alone made Stiles take a step back. Shocked that she genuinely questioned his loved but in that moment, it made him really think. Did he ever actually love her or has he been stringing her along since the very beginning? When he didn’t answer, she glared at him in distaste. How could someone so vile have the right to breathe? She thought to herself. (Y/n) swore her heart actually broke in that moment. All she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and never talk to anyone again.
He was a boy. A boy who was hung up on a girl who never gave him the light of day. Pathetic. And though (Y/n) was hurting, she would not cry in front of Stiles. “Was any of it real?” She asked despite the havoc washing over her body and mind. He sighed, unsure of what to say. Because, in all honesty, Stiles had a good time with her. But she wasn’t Lydia. She wasn’t the girl he’s always adored. He wanted to console her but lying wasn’t something she deserved, even if it eased the pain she was currently feeling. So, instead of replying, Stiles stayed quiet. The lack of words only made (Y/n) more angry, more confused. She thought everything was going fine. They were always laughing, always smiling.
But in that moment, Stiles showed his true colors and she wanted nothing more than to stop existing. She dared to look at him once more, really taking in who he was before saying with as much hate as possible. “Goodbye, Stiles. After that night, the two stopped talking entirely. Stiles didn’t even bother to keep contact with her. He didn’t bother to keep or maintain a level of basic friendship with her. Now with (Y/n) out of his life, he could finally move on with the girl he had been “in love” with. But the longer they stopped talking, the more (Y/n) realized how truly alone she was. Him and his friends, who seemed to enjoy her presence no longer took the time to initiate conversation with her.
Sometimes they would acknowledge her presence by smiling at her in the hallway but it was never more than that. When (Y/n) went to school, she was alone. Stiles friends were her friends. Or...so she thought. Her days, which once were filled with laughter and happiness were now nothing but silence and loneliness. The only thing that brought her remote comfort was her books, a way for her to cope with the painful situation. Stiles barely acknowledged her presence, continuing to follow Lydia’s heel like a puppy dog despite one minor detail. She didn’t care about him. Lydia loved the attention she got from Stiles. She loved that she could boss him around and get whatever she wanted. That was one of the only reasons as to why she tolerated him and his blabbering.
As that school year ended, summer was just beginning. And the only thing (Y/n) knew was that she wasn’t going to be wallowing around in Beacon Hills. A few weeks prior to the start of summer, she had emailed her best friend , Mac, who lived in L.A, and asked if she could stay for the summer. Over-joyed by the proposition, Mac agreed. The second summer hit, she left for L.A in hopes of fixing herself and picking up the broken pieces Stiles left behind. When (Y/n) arrived, she already felt rejuvenated. She felt free from the confines of the judgement and stuffy life she had previously been living. L.A was just as beautiful as she had imagined. Mac picked her up and showed her as much as she could in one day. Visiting even more in the weeks to come.
She knew that putting herself back together would be difficult. Even with the support of her closest friend. It was hard to say the least, but not impossible. But what she didn’t expect to happen, and so soon, was that she fell in love with a boy. Scratch that. She fell in love with a man. He was nothing like Stiles. He was kind and smart and loving and self-less and full of unfathomable passion. Driven by the support of his fans, friends and family alone. He was forgiving and open-minded, forever learning about the endless possibilities and the secrets the world has to offer. And his name was Shawn. He was fit, taking very good care of his body and health. He was a Canadian musician who loved his family more than anything in the universe.
It was June 22nd when the two first met. (Y/n), who wanted nothing more than to just curl up on the couch and binge her latest TV show obsession, was trying to be persuaded by her best friend to come to a huge party not from their apartment. “C’mon, (Y/n)! Please! There are going to be hundreds of hot single men there! Actually, forget about the guys! There’s gonna be chocolate and probably famous people! I got V.I.P passes to get in! We could meet Morgan Freeman! Please!!” (Y/n) turned over her shoulder, brows furrowed. “How did you get V.I.P passes? Ain’t that expensive?”
Mac shrugged but wore a proud smug grin. “Satan owes me a few favors. Now please!” (Y/n) glanced down at her friend before smiling. “Fine! I’ll go get dressed. But we’re sticking together. I want your phone on you at all times!” Mac hugged her from behind before skipping away. “Thanks, mom!” (Y/n) rolled her eyes at the teasing statement. She had always been protective of her friends. Especially considering the fact they were all shorter than her and had little to no experience when it came to self-defense. Though (Y/n) had perfected the art of many different fighting techniques, her friends had not. Therefore, she felt it as her responsibility to look after them.
Once dressed in a both scandalous yet comfortable outfit, the pair left to party. (Y/n) glanced in the mirror of the car on the way, happy with what she chose. A pair of ripped black jeans, dark red boots with a cute top. And to compliment it, she wore a bad-ass black jacket. Her hair wild and mostly natural, kept together with a little bit of hair-spray. That night, (Y/n) had only expected to mingle with a few higher ups and enjoy the company of her best friend. What she didn’t expect to happen was to bump right into the love of her life. When they arrived at the party, the guard glanced down at their V.I.P passes before allowing them in.
Once they passed the gate, they made their way over to the bar. The music pumped throughout the bar, shaking the tables and glasses due to the aggressive amount of bass. But the girls didn’t care. Mac grabbed (Y/n)’s hand when Come On Eileen came on. Because of her aggressive pull, she was forced to rest her cup on the table, laughing at Mac’s wide smile. Neither of the two girls noticed the group of handsome guys watching them. The boys found themselves smiling at the sight of the two girls who danced happily together. The wider the girls smiled, the more the guys grinned. Especially the Canadian performer. He couldn’t take his eyes off the tall goddess who’s smile was as bright as the stars.
(Y/n) hadn’t noticed his intense and loving gaze, but she soon would. When the song ended, they returned to their spots at the bar, laughing to one another. Resting the back of her elbows against the railing, (Y/n) grinned at her friend. “Ya know, this isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m having a pretty good time.” Mac smacked her shoulder playfully before hugging her side. “I told you!” Before (Y/n) could reply, a guy from the group came over to them, smiling down at Mac. “Hi, my name’s Chris. I-I was just wondering if you wanted to u-uhh dance with me?” She glanced up at (Y/n) with uncertainty. There was no doubt in either of the twos mind that this guy was beyond handsome, and so the taller girl grabbed her friend by the shoulders, pushing her forward slightly.
“She would love to dance with you-” Mac’s eyes went wide at the proclamation. (Y/n) leaned into her ear, whispering. “He’s cute. Be safe. I’ll be right here if you need anything. If anything happens, use the moves I taught you. Go have some fun.” She grins from cheek to cheek before following Chris into the crowd of people. Because of her height advantage, (Y/n) was able to pin-point exactly where they were which brought her a sense of comfort. The longer she looked at her friend, the more (Y/n) realized Mac was all she ever had. She was the only real friend she could rely on. And if she lost her, she’d go out of her mind. As her mind begun to grow with dark thoughts, they returned to the one person she had been trying to forget. Stiles.
He had abandoned her for another girl. A girl who never gave him the time of day. Who never really cared about him, and still, there he was, trailing behind her like a lost puppy. She sighed to herself, shaking her head to push away the thought. Who was she kidding. He meant nothing to her now. He made the biggest mistake dropping (Y/n). Looking up at her friend, she smiled. All she needed in her life was her best friend, Mac. That was until he came up to her. His movements were wary but driven. From the moment he saw her, he knew he wanted to get to know her. There was something so enticing about her that made him go crazy. When she heard his voice, it was nothing but smooth and warm. “Uh, I don’t want to bother you b-but, would you like to dance with m-me?”
(Y/n)’s eyes went wide. Eyeing him up and down, she was taken back by his immediate beauty. With tousled chocolate brown hair and equally as dark yet warm eyes, everything about him was inviting. He was toned, built and fit. And though (Y/n) was rather tall, she found herself craning her neck up to look at him. He must’ve been at least 6′2. After finding her voice, she smiled. “Oh, you’re not bothering me at all, haha. I-I would love to dance.” When he took her hand, Shawn couldn’t help but smile. They fit perfectly together. He was secretly thankful that the music had shifted into a slow song because truth be told, he wasn’t the greatest dancer. Wrapping his large calloused hands around her waist, he blushed slightly. “I-Is that okay?” (Y/n) found herself grinning like a dork.
“You’re fine. My names (Y/n), by the way. Who might you be?” Her voice was sweet yet strong, something Shawn hadn’t expected. It intrigued him greatly. “My names Shawn. Shawn Mendes.” Her brows furrowed slightly. Why does that sound so familiar? She thought to herself. “Are you an actor or musician or something? Your name sounds familiar?” He nodded, flushing slightly at the recognition. “Uh- Yeah, I’m a Canadian musician.” (Y/n) smiled softly, speaking kindly to ease his somewhat tense state. “That’s so cool. I really like your music. It’s lyrically amazing and you’ve got a wonderful voice.” Now, Shawn had heard compliments from all sorts of people but it seemed, in that moment, that none of them built up to hers. She seemed genuinely compassionate about his music and the passion he attempted to provide on a daily.
They spent the rest of the night talking about anything and everything. Conversation between the two flowed easily and casually once they broke their awkward silence. After letting Mac know where she was going, the two ended up on the beach outside of the club. Dimly lit by only a few mere lights despite the sun beginning to set, they walked down to the beach, hands laced together. They made sure not to trail too far from the club-house which was still thumping with music and energy. (Y/n) found herself grinning from ear to ear for the first time in a long time. She hadn’t experienced such happiness from a guy in a long time. With Mac, she was always happy.
They were best friends after-all. But before Shawn, Stiles was the one guy that made her happy. Now, it seemed as though she was able to smile brighter than she ever had before. Shawn turned to (Y/n) grinning from cheek to cheek. “I remember this one time, my sister and I were running down the side of a mountain back in Canada and my parents got so mad at us. I remember my mom grabbing me by the ear and shook her head the whole way home. My dad, on the other hand, was laughing his ass off.” He shook his head, laughing. The sight alone made (Y/n) giggle. The two stood side by side, looking out on the gorgeous beach. The wind sweeping gently between the two young adults.
When she looked back at him, (Y/n) noticed his eyes lingering on her. “What?” She asked, innocently. Though (Y/n) was tall, she felt small compared to Shawn’s gargantuan height. And though height could be an intimidating thing, (Y/n) felt comfortable looking into his warm chocolate eyes. He looked down at her and smile, a blush making its way onto his cheeks. “Nothing, it’s just-” He pauses for a moment, looking back at her before turning even more red. “I-I’ve never connected with someone so quickly as I do with you. I just loved talking with you and you are so good at listening. It’s amazing.” (Y/n) bit her lip to stop her smile from falling right off her face.
Nobody had ever made her feel this way. Not even Stiles. The boy she was hell bent on marrying. But now, it seemed like nothing but a few stupid memories and a few useless feelings. Glancing up at Shawn, any remote feeling she had towards Stiles seemed to wash away. With the help and support of her best friend, and now, meeting a really great guy, (Y/n) found herself becoming an even better person than ever. She had completely forgotten about her heartbreak and learned from it. Blossoming into an even more respectable young woman. And though it was only the summer, she was thrilled to come back and finish her senior year feeling and looking better than ever.
[Now]
When she waltzed back into Beacon Hills High, he didn’t expect her to look so radiant. But she was always that beautiful. Stiles just never noticed. He hadn’t noticed until now how the sunlight shown down on her hair which made her look even more heavenly than he thought were to be possible. (Y/n)’s eyes were bright and full of life. When she smiled, the room lit up. It was as if everything around him had finally been brought to life. When she moved, the world seemed to move around her. Kids parted for her, taken back by her new glow. The reason behind it was a complete and utter mystery.
She smiled wider than she ever had. A simple action that made every person swoon, especially Stiles. He just stood there, jaw-gaping at the sight of his ex-girlfriend. (Y/n) looked beautiful, beyond enchanting. But in that moment he realized, she wasn’t his. Nor would she ever be. When she moved, it seemed as though everything moved around her. (Y/n) smiled brighter than before and the sight made his heart break. She never smiled that wide when she was with him. Turning over his shoulder back at his friends, back at Lydia, he shook his head. Had he made a mistake? He hadn’t even gone far with Lydia. In fact, they hadn’t done anything. She barely stands him.
Stiles walked closer to get a better look at her. She raked her fingers through her hair, making her way out of the school. He followed, completely intrigued. When he looked back at Lydia, he had a sour feeling in the pit of his stomach. He made a grave mistake. He dumped the best girl in the world for someone who didn’t even care about him. All he knew was they he needed to talk to her. Stiles hadn’t really thought of what he was going to say. “Uh- ((Y/n)?” When she turned around, he felt nothing but regret. It was as if a whole had made its way into his heart and it was all because of him. No one made that choice but him. (Y/n) looked at him with a strong expression. If she was hurting, she wasn’t going to show it. “Stiles. It’s good to see you. How are you and Lydia?” The question stung just like she intended it to.
He gulped before scratching the back of his thick brown hair. “Uh- about that.. (Y/n), I’m so sorry. I ended something incredible for someone who never cared about me. But you did. I was hoping-” She cut him off when her phone rung, voice hard and cold. “Oh- sorry to cut this short but my ride is here.” Where was she going? He thought to himself. And almost immediately, he regretted asking that question. Stiles watched as she squealed at the sight of a car rolling up. He hadn’t expected whoever was coming out would look that good. The man was built, toned and chiseled. Hell, he would make half of the lacrosse team look like children compared to his gargantuan height. When he smiled his teeth gleamed in the sun-light. Stiles could practically hear the girls around him swoon. What caught his attention though was when (Y/n) ran towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck.
He laughed into her ear, twirling her a little bit. “You think I’d miss your first day back?” He said, his voice warm but soft. “I’m glad you’re here Shawn.” Shawn? Stiles took a step back, glaring at him in confusion. Who is this guy?
Your P.O.V
I lace my fingers with his, grinning up at him. “I didn’t think you’d come.” Shawn grinned, a simple action that would make any girl swoon, especially the girls curiously growing behind me. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world-” He says, resting his massive calloused hands on my hips to pull me closer. “(Y/n), who’s that guy that’s staring at us?” Glancing up to see who he was talking about, my throat went dry. Stiles. Almost immediately I tear my eyes away, but shake my head. “My ex.” Shawn puffed out his chest, his muscles tensing. I laugh and rest my hands on his chest. “Babe, I’m all yours. Not his.” He looked back at Stiles before smirking down at me. “You’re right-” Before I could finish, Shawn kissed me passionately.
Our lips moved in unison before he let go to kiss my cheeks and neck. I giggle, trying to push him away. He only pulls me in tighter, laughing as he blew on my shoulder to make a fart noise. The action made us both cackle. Once he pulls back, he wraps his hands around my waist before spinning me. “Your ex is regretting letting you go, I’m sure. But too bad for him. You’re all mine, baby-girl.” I looked up at him with love in my eyes, raking my hair through his chocolate brown hair. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, Shawn.” I could feel the guilt practically radiating off of Stiles, who stood a few feet away. And ya know what, he should feel guilty. I was happy to have someone who really loved and appreciated me. Stiles had his chance. And now, he feels nothing but regret.
